STATEMENT

Sandler Hudson Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming group exhibition, Linear Configurations: Ink, Paint, and Clay. This exhibition features the work of Linda Armstrong (Atlanta), Betsy Cain (Savannah), and Michael Dickey (New York). The use of line— its composition and character plays an integral role in each of these artists’ work. It defines structure, suggests the figure and motion in challenging and unexpected ways.

EXPLORING THE ARTISTIC PROCESS

Between the artist’s large sculptural orbs, reminiscent of celestial shapes, to cylinders that appear to be almost 3D rendered, Michael Dickey’s work twists and tricks the eye. It’s a joy to feel their textured surfaces, layered with graphic black and white strokes that suggest an unseen light source. Their rich hues cast tinted shadows, while their matte surfaces cleverly belie their dimensionality.

Dickey’s process begins with throwing the clay on the wheel, trimming it down and then letting it rest to dry. Once dried, the glaze is then brushed and sprayed on while the work is spinning on the banding wheel. The piece will then go through the first firing and then glazed once more for multiple more firings until the vessel is “ finished”.

EXPLORING THE ARTISTIC PROCESS

Betsy Cain’s Indigo series originates from living in the low country around Savannah for over 40 years. After seeing the film “Daughters of the Dust ” (Julie Dash,1991), Cain furthered her knowledge of the history of the indigo plant and the enslaved laborers responsible for indigo production three centuries ago. This series is an important one for Cain and is ongoing. Cain allows her paint to organically create line influenced by landscape and memory. This results in a sensation of being caught in the act of change or transition.

EXPLORING THE ARTISTIC PROCESS

The speci fi city of a particular experience, a visual cue, I find, is best examined thru the intimacy and immediacy of drawing. It is the action of making marks that seem to take over from the original observations. Paper is central to my practice, both as a surface to work on and as a material with its own properties and history.

I have spent over 50 years exploring and discovering new places and spaces at Cumberland Island, a natural remote, unspoiled, yet endangered wilderness area off the coast of Georgia. From the shores of Cumberland Island comes this set of 8 drawings. ‘The Sea’ was initiated by my collecting lost shrimper nets. I find endless structural patterns in tossing them around in piles and clumps or, pulling out an individual one. Memories collide and reconstruct, I become lost in the process of making marks as I periodically glance at the nets. This series continues in different forms.
