FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Linear Configurations: Ink, Paint, and Clay

Exhibition Dates: August 5 - September 2, 2023

Opening reception Saturday August 5th, 2-5 pm at Sandler Hudson Gallery

Sandler Hudson Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming group exhibition, Linear Configurations: Ink, Paint, and Clay. This exhibition features the work of Linda Armstrong (Atlanta), Betsy Cain (Savannah), and Michael Dickey (New York). The use of line— its composition and character plays an integral role in each of these artists’ work. It defines structure, suggests the figure and motion in challenging and unexpected ways.

Linda Armstrong’s practice focuses on the immediacy of drawing and visual clues from nature. After having spent over 50 years exploring the wilderness of Cumberland Island, Armstrong is inspired by her experiences there. This body of work focuses on the elegance and fluidity of line gleaned from examining and collecting shrimper nets. Armstrong is fascinated by the structural patterns formed by these objects, evoking memories that collide and reconnect.

Betsy Cain’s Indigo series originates from living in the low country around Savannah for over 40 years. After seeing the film “Daughters of the Dust ” (Julie Dash,1991), Cain furthered her knowledge of the history of the indigo plant and the enslaved laborers responsible for indigo production three centuries ago. This series is an important one for Cain and is ongoing. Cain allows her paint to organically create line influenced by landscape and memory. This results in a sensation of being caught in the act of change or transition.

Michael Dickey creates earthenware vessels of different shapes, sizes, and colors ranging from 8 to 28 inches tall. These sculptural orbs appear to almost be 3D rendered in their appearance. Dickey enjoys the physicality of throwing clay and challenges himself with scale and the laborious task of the application of glaze. He applies as many as 50 bands of color on a single piece, evoking remarkable light and movement.

B E T S Y C A I N BIO

Betsy Cain is a multi-media painter living in Savannah, Georgia. She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on the University of Alabama campus and grew up in Fair field, Alabama. She received both her BFA and MFA degrees from The University of Alabama, and did formative undergradu- ate work at Auburn University and Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

After receiving her MFA, she worked in both Alabama and Georgia’s Artist-in Schools Pro- grams, designing art projects for K-12 students with all levels of abilities. At the culmination of a national year long grant through The Roswell Museum and Art Center, Roswell, New Mexico, Betsy and her husband David Kaminsky, a photographer, moved to Savannah, Georgia. For the past forty two years she has maintained an independent studio practice in Savannah and has ex- hibited widely in curated shows as well as in galleries in Savannah, Atlanta, and New York. Her work is held in many corporate collections, including Google, Coca-Cola USA, King and Spaulding, Alston Bird, Price Waterhouse and Cooper, and Chemical Bank, NYC.

Her work was recently presented at Future Fair NYC, May2023, with Laney Contemporary Fine Art. This year she curated an exhibition for the members of Telfair Museum’s Friends of African American Art with Savannah State University, Kennedy Fine Art Gallery, Feb-June 2023. Her work will be included in a 2023 summer show at Sandler Hudson Gallery. This fall she has been asked to be a Juror for The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) for their statewide exhibition Gathered: Georgia Artists Selecting Georgia Artists, opening November 2023.

Cain’s work includes paintings, works on paper, and sculptural cut-outs, influenced by the salt marshes, tidal creeks, and barrier islands adjoining her marsh home in Savannah. She is a strong advocate for the protection of Georgia’s vast salt marshes and barrier islands.

In the Savannah arts community, Betsy Cain organized the first sidewalk art festival for SCAD in 1981. She was a founder and sponsor for the Ursrey Lecture Series for the Flannery O’Conner Childhood Home in Savannah and has served on the Cultural Affairs Commission for the City of Savannah as well as the Ossabaw Island Cultural Committee .She has organized groups of artists for in depth visits to Ossabaw Island near Savannah and has curated shows for individual artists as well as exhibitions with various institutions. She has co-founded or participated in collaborative and

performative artists groups in Savannah, AHA(Artists Helping Artists, co-founded with Larry Gray), Too Loose ToGroup co-founded with Gary Miller, MEAT (Meddin Evolving Artist Theatre) and The Creative Force Artist Alliance.

BIO

Between the artist’s large sculptural orbs, reminiscent of celestial shapes, to cylinders that appear to be almost 3D rendered , Michael Dickey’s work twists and tricks the eye. It’s a joy to feel their textured surfaces, layered with graphic black and white strokes that suggest an unseen light source. Their rich hues cast tinted shadows , while their matte surfaces cleverly belie their dimensionality.

Michael Dickey was born in Colorado. He later studied Painting and Ceramics at Colorado state university and in Italy. After school he moved to New York where he has exhibited, while living and working in Brooklyn.
