POGGENPOHL ANNUAL INNOVATION DESIGN CONTEST Innovation Award Winner Hausscape, Miami, FL Luis Bebchik and Reinier Boulart, Hausscape
After a review of exceptional submissions, Poggenpohl is proud to announce the winners in the following categories:
Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA) This minimalist kitchen and pantry for a new waterfront residence integrates a tremendous number of appliances and features, while keeping the look fresh, contemporary and sophisticated. Functional areas were created including a cooking zone, entertainment seating and a bar.
Poggenpohl can be found in homes in more than 70 countries around the world. Integrating the size and architecture of the built environment, its designers start with a clean slate and work from there, considering the space and the customer’s preferred design theme to create a unique, individual kitchen. Whatever the brief, Poggenpohl aims for perfection.

After a 30-year occupant moved out, a young couple purchased this apartment, refreshing it with daring and unique finishes from head to toe. The tiny, 49-square-foot kitchen (small even by New York standards) receives its personality from Poggenpohl’s gray nut tree cabinetry and aluminum backsplash— complete with Gorilla wallpaper. Functionality was key, with custom features to clear the countertops of clutter and create space for clever, smaller-scale appliances.

This kitchen design was part of a complete renovation on the 20th floor of a condominium in St. Louis, Missouri. The entire unit was stripped from floor to ceiling, and reconfigured to fulfill the homeowners’ wishes for an open floor plan. To accommodate their desire for a welcoming kitchen with clean lines, Poggenpohl products were used here and in nearly every room in the home. The result is a modern, seamless aesthetic.

This July/August issue marks our annual celebration of global design. In it, we take you around the world— everywhere from a curated concept shop in Marrakesh to a 1950s Berlin high-rise-turned-whimsical hotel, with bicycles suspended from the lobby’s ceiling. We also, always, bring you much closer to home with the best in regional design. While jetting off to another time zone can often inspire, so, too, can your own zip code. In addition, we’re encouraging readers to take another trip this summer: over to our new digital content site, luxedaily.luxesource.com, where you’ll discover design-related stories galore. Our 13 regional editions of Luxe provide an endless array of styles, ideas and design resources from across the country.
This page: Luxe takes you on an international journey this issue, highlighting such dynamic global venues as Morocco’s L’Hôtel Marrakech (top, left and right), designed by Jasper Conran, and the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin (above).

“While it isn’t a trend but rather a predictable constant in design, metals were on display at Spring Market. Seeing the way companies like Milling Road for Baker reimagined classic finishes—as they did with the Wrap console—in a fresh and modern way is incredibly inspiring to us. The marble top paired with the sleek, sexy base makes this piece a total showstopper. Vintage was another strong theme we saw in furnishings, art and accessories. We were impressed with the Barrie Benson collection for Highland House. The way she reimagined vintage pieces of furniture and explored bold color palettes was exciting beyond words!” Milling Road

“Craftsmanship and an appreciation for artisan work were dominant themes at HPMKT, and are a major cultural push impacting interior design today. The usage of materials in their raw form showcases their natural beauty. Our absolute favorite was the Floating Credenza 1702 from Craft Associates Furniture. They used solid walnut to create the most sensual form that celebrates the grain of the wood.” Credit: Addison Jones Photography

“Neutrals were being paired with different styles and accents throughout the showrooms we visited at HPMKT. We fell head over heels for the John-Richard Brass Six-Light Chandelier. The white marble paired so fabulously together with the brass—such a modern take on a classic chandelier shape and style. We also loved the Bark Chair by OLY—the classic style with the textured look of tree bark can be used in interior or exterior applications. We love the OLY line in general because of the clean modern vibe that gives a nod to past classic looks.”

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ
MIMI FAUCETT Writer / Austin My creative influences come from… Print magazines. Nothing gives me more creative joy than a favorite, familiar magazine still having the ability to surprise me. Long live print! Favorite book: Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington. Not only is the story inspiring, but the hot-orange cover makes this book coffee table-worthy. Top three things on your design wish list: I’m dying for a set of black linen sheets from Hawkins New York—what I consider to be the perfect summer bed set. I’m also currently obsessing over L.A. artist Bari Ziperstein’s quirky ceramic vases, and I’m steadily saving a spot on my wall for a face painting (or two!) from Sally King Benedict. Most fascinating person you’ve ever met: My grandmother, Nana. She’s someone who’s generous with time, laughter and sensitivity, but first and foremost, she’s a listener. It’s rare to get a story about her past, but when you do, it’s always fascinating.
ARIC ATTAS
Photographer / Palm Beach If not a photographer, I would be… A musician. I’ve performed with jazz, rock and blues bands over the years. I also create guitar-based Ambient Soundscapes to accompany many of my fine art exhibitions, as I find sound is a great counterpoint to my visually oriented work. Prized possessions: I have a photograph from the first roll of film I shot. It’s a black-and-white print I took at age 12, and I treasure it because I’m intrigued by how this simple close-up of a printing press foreshadowed my fascination with light, space, form and design. Also, my health. Having won two fights with cancer, I am aware of the value of good health, and I cherish it every day. Finally, I love my best friend and studio mate, Macchiato, a 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, who was rescued from an elephant preserve. Upcoming project: I’m excited to be working on new photographs for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Clare Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut, that will run from October 14 through December 31. These cosmos-inspired images explore the intersection of art, science and spirituality.
LX_COM14_Contributors.indd 92
ERIC PIASECKI Photographer / New York What type of design inspires you? Though my personal aesthetic tends to lean toward modern, I enjoy all different types of interiors. Right now, I really like seeing how designers are taking traditional design and adding modern twists to make it more contemporary. If money were no object, I’d buy… A new horse for our barn in New Mexico. Most interesting person you’ve met: Years ago, we were shooting Versace’s mansion in South Beach, Miami, and I got to meet famed photographer Helmut Newton by the gold-tiled pool—it was an over-the-top experience all around! Preferred superpower: It would have to be the ability to fly— no more airplanes! Of course, I would need some kind of side car for all my equipment.
KARA PICKMAN Writer / Miami Favorite design trend: That everything old becomes new again—I could live in any of Terence Conran’s design books, but I’m particularly partial to the 1974 edition of The House Book. And if you’re into obsessing over details (or like to think you are), check out the quirky photo styling in the 1990 edition of Complete Home Storage. Dream assignment: I’m honored to work with innovative clients across the country and around the world who champion art and design, including the Guggenheim, Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Smithsonian, Design Miami/ and many more, and my goal is to always both expand and refine my client list and creative projects. Most-treasured possessions: The dining room table and chairs passed down to us from my mother-in-law and late father-in-law; they were custom-made in Spain for my wife’s grandmother. The table seats at least 10 and is so large we had to take the dimensions into account when we purchased our first home two years ago. There was no way we were buying a house where we couldn’t eat around that table! If I had $20,000 to blow, I’d… Commission the custom Cuban floor tiles my wife wants for our sun room—and start the renovation we’ve been planning. On your nightstand: Most recently, Elif Batuman’s novel The Idiot. If not a writer, I would be… An art conservator. Maybe in another life...

VISUAL HISTORY AT VENERABLE COVERINGS COMPANY DE GOURNAY, THE CECIL GURNEY SISTERS CARRY ON THEIR FATHER’S LEGACY WHILE KEEPING THEIR EYES ON THE FUTURE THROUGH A SERIES OF BUZZ-GENERATING COLLABORATIONS. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER
Imagine growing up in a magical world where butterflies flutter along perfectly painted vines and mischievous monkeys frolic up and down the walls. Now imagine that place is your childhood home and those fanciful landscapes are the family business, and you might get a sense of the charmed upbringing had by sisters Hannah and Rachel Cecil Gurney. “We grew up in a stunning house, decorated by our father, just opposite Kensington Gardens in London,” says Hannah. “My sister and I used to sit on the stairs, fascinated by the Chinese figures on the wallpaper.” Depicting peasant life in rural 18th-century China, the pattern, which featured scenes of silk-weaving and porcelain-making, wasn’t just a work of breathtaking decoration, but also a lesson in history and culture. “It was all very exotic to a 6-year-old Londoner, and our father would happily spend hours talking us through it all,” she says. Their father, Claud Cecil Gurney, founded de Gournay, the world-renowned maker of exquisite handmade wallcoverings, christening the brand with the French root of the family name in 1986.

As the story goes, Claud had trouble finding skilled artisans to restore some antique wallpaper in his home; so, through the Chinese Trade Commission in London, he located artists familiar with the painting techniques in mainland China. Working with the craftsmen, he began to create hand-painted papers, reigniting a tradition that had begun in the early 18th century, when chinoiserie was all the rage among the European aristocracy. By staying true to original production techniques— typically six artisans work on a single paper that can take up to 150 hours to produce—Claud created a truly bespoke luxury item. Today, his daughters help run the company—Hannah as director, and Rachel as the global style manager—putting their stamp on a number of forward-thinking initiatives while preparing to take over the family business when their father retires. “Our father has been wonderful about allowing us to make decisions and take on a lot of responsibility,” says Hannah. “He understands that if he is serious about handing over the reins, he needs to trust and support our ideas and allow us to learn from our mistakes. We love what we do so much that we want to ensure we safeguard it for the next generation.” The company’s vision has expanded to include both more contemporary designs and ones that reflect other global perspectives, such as the more abstract Japanese and Korean collection, an
example of which features a weeping willow motif, or the Papiers Peints Panoramiques collection, which is inspired by 19th-century French murals of exotic scenes. “While de Gournay has always been seen as a company that makes very traditional hand-painted papers, my sister and I encourage a more modern aesthetic through employing innovative new techniques and colorways, as well as developing new collections,” says Hannah. One strategic move that has proven successful: a string of high-profile collaborations, the most recent of which is an au courant take on an Art Deco motif inspired by and created in conjunction with Harrods department store. “Art Deco is making a comeback in interior design, and I love the use of geometric shapes, gilt and lacquer in interiors,” says Rachel. “The new design features an ornate scallop pattern gilded onto a metallic background with hand-painted watercolor accents.” Adds Hannah, “The wallpaper has a contemporary edge that we think will appeal to a whole new audience.”
In the quest to expand the brand’s reach, de Gournay pairs up in September with style icon Kate Moss, the latest partnership to feature a boldface name more synonymous with the runway than the annals of interior design. Other recent sartorial collaborations include Matthew Williamson, Jenny Packham and Moda Operandi. Most recently, the company teamed up with Italian fashion label Aquazzura for a line of embroidered footwear and a Tropicalia-inspired wallpaper (shown in part on the previous page), which they developed as a nod to brand founder Edgardo Osorio’s Colombian heritage. Of the synergy between the company and the fashion industry, Hannah feels it’s a natural fit—after all, wallpaper is a form of dressing for one’s home. “There are a lot of similarities between couture and de Gournay,” she says. “We make everything by hand to the highest quality while offering limitless bespoke capabilities. Furthermore, people with style tend to have flair when it comes to their interiors, and vice versa. These days being stylish extends to a whole lifestyle, not just your clothing.”

RADAR / BIG IDEA
All handmade rugs tell a tale, spinning a narrative through silk and wool. In the case of Amadi Carpets, there’s another story as well: In 1984, the Ahmadi family fled war-torn Afghanistan to neighboring Pakistan, eventually emigrating to America with little more than the clothes on their backs and a talent for weaving. Here, Zubair Ahmadi, one of the five brothers behind the brand, shares with us the company’s artistic and philanthropic vision. For 20 years, Amadi Carpets has created some of the most dynamic and finely made rugs on the market. How did you learn the skills of the trade? Growing up in a family of nine children in Afghanistan, we learned the art of weaving from our mother, whose family opened the first silk-weaving factory in Kabul during the 1960s. As a kid, I worked on the loom alongside my brothers after school. We also learned to restore different types of antique rugs and textiles from various countries over the years, so we not only have a knowledge of the construction, but we’re familiar with different techniques and styles. Those same skills eventually led me and my brother, Zabi, to open
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY S. CHEVALIER
our own small 400-square-foot workshop in Los Angeles in 1995, where we refurbished rugs found at flea markets and auctions. Today, all five of us—Zabi, Assad, Jawid, Murtaza and me—work collectively on operations and designs at Amadi. How did you grow the company from a local repair shop to a global enterprise? Two years after opening our shop, we couldn’t find the quality of rugs we desired. We learned of numerous Afghan weavers who had fled to nearby Peshawar, Pakistan, during the civil war in the 1990s. We feel a deep connection with the people of Afghanistan and were looking for a way to assist those refugees. Zabi made the journey to Peshawar in 1997, and, coincidentally, ran into a foreman who worked in the factory that belonged to our mother’s family. Hiring him and his family led to employing other refugees. As the years went on, five looms turned into 10, 10 turned into 200, and soon we were employing over 1,000 Afghan weavers living in Pakistan.
At what point did you move the weaving operation back to Afghanistan? After the country’s liberation from the Taliban in 2003, many of the workers returned to Afghanistan. That’s when we opened our first weaving workshop in Kabul and our focus shifted to employing an ignored sector of the population: women. It was our goal to create a safe workplace
where women would be empowered to make a living. It wasn’t easy: Even though we were from Afghanistan ourselves, we had to convince fathers, husbands and brothers that we were setting up a safe, harassment-free environment for their daughters, wives and sisters. Providing transportation to and from work offered them further protection. Additionally, due to four decades of ongoing war, a whole generation has been raised without an education; therefore, we offer one hour of basic reading and writing lessons every day. In terms of the process, what distinguishes you from other rug companies? Since we control our own production, we get to be more creative, productive and effective than a typical rug gallery or company. From sourcing the raw wool to washing it, carding and dying it, we control every step. And the fact that we are improving lives along the way is an added plus. Share what’s next for Amadi, design- and philanthropy-wise. We want to be more than a rug company. We’d like to launch furniture and textile lines one day. In terms of giving back, our goal is to extend the outreach of our programs and build more weaving centers in other parts of Afghanistan. After all, women are the backbone of the family, so if you help one woman, you help many people beyond her.

When you walk into Katherine Wildt O’Brien’s studio, you’d be forgiven for thinking you stumbled into a jeweler’s workshop or a geology buff’s paradise. A panoply of glimmering stones greets visitors of the space—with bright crystal quartz, deep violet amethyst and gleaming pyrite, also known as fool’s gold, all on glorious display. Unearthed from the farthest reaches of the globe, the shining specimens inspire New York City-based
Matthew Studios’ collections, which include hardware, lighting and case goods. Wildt O’Brien’s love of exotic rocks started at a young age. As a teenager, she worked parttime in a gem shop, where an eccentric, elderly West Indian woman taught her about crystals and their properties. Following her passion, she established Matthew Studios, named for her pet rabbit, in 2008. Her big break came when Tory Burch asked her to design crystal luminaries

for her stores. “Just walking into the Tory Burch offices is so inspiring,” she says. “When we got the opportunity to work on custom lamps for her, it was a dream come true, not to mention a creative learning experience.” Today, the company occupies a large loft space in Harlem, close to where the designer lives. In fact, it was the area’s African market, just a few blocks away from her studio, that provided the impetus for Wildt O’Brien’s latest hardware line. “I love the handcrafted, global ‘Gypset’ vibe at the market,” she says. “I have been collecting cowrie shell earrings for years and have wanted to do a collection incorporating them, since the cowrie shell is a traditional symbol of wisdom and abundance. Horn is another favorite used in African craft, and a powerful talisman of strength and inner power.” Acquiring it is another story: “It took two years to find a reputable source for naturally shed horn,” she says. Not surprisingly, Wildt O’Brien’s inspiration board is full of recognizable safari-chic imagery, such as film stills from Out of Africa, photos from vintage Ralph Lauren runway shows, the work of photographer Peter Beard and shots of intricate, hand-beaded Masai necklaces. “The pieces are imbued with a nomadic spirit,” she says. A passion for travel, painting and even flea-market finds also filters into the design process. “I recently found a red-tagged, sale-bin rhinestone purse, and the handle inspired my new metal Harper cabinet pull series,” she says. Refined settings of polished brass, nickel and chrome allow the stones to steal the show, whether it’s the deep whiskey-hued facets of smoky quartz or the vibrant emerald waves of malachite—both of which are sourced from mines in South America and Africa, respectively.
LX_COM14_Radar_Bespoke_MathewStudio.indd 104
“Simple forms are paired with natural, tonal textures that resonate against hand-cast metal,” Wildt O’Brien says. That juxtaposition of organic forms with polished finishes lends the collection a sophisticated well-traveled vibe that hints at many of the pieces’ exotic origins. Says the designer, “I’m still charmed by the idea that these stones have journeyed around the world to end up in a stylish new setting.”

▲ BIENNALE INTERIEUR, KORTRIJK, BELGIUM
Reason to go: The best of Nordic style is on full display here, with more than 700 eyecatching new introductions in furnishings, accessories and lighting, in an event that coincides with the festivities of Stockholm Design Week. What you’ll find: Eighty percent of the products are Scandinavian in origin, so it’s no surprise that regional brands, such as up-and-coming lighting design line Pholc, as well as established brands like Svenskt Tenn, whose vibrant style is shown in the vignette at right, are well represented. Smaller makers are celebrated, too, for their reinterpretations of traditional Scandi style. While the fair itself unfolds at Stockholmsmässan convention center, the entire city plays host to over 100 events, installations and parties as part of Design Week. stockholmfurniturelightfair.se
OCTOBER 2018
Reason to go: Small in size, but big in design talent, Belgium is a growing destination for creatives and aesthetes alike, and this highly selective, rigorously curated show happens every two years. A nonprofit fair, the Biennale Interieur’s unique installations often blur the line between commercial design and fine art. What you’ll find: With nearly half of the new products hailing from Belgium, you’ll see innovative twists on regional vernacular staples such as neutral linens, raw and rough-hewn woods, and burnished metals. The focus is on mostly local, European-produced design with a decidedly international point of view, and collaborations across industries or cultures are encouraged. Past galleries represented include Maniera from Brussels, Carwan Gallery from Beirut, and Paris’ Studio Dessuant Bone, whose “Perpetual Motion” installation is shown here. interieur.be

Reason to go: Top Italian luxury brands save their launches for this acclaimed show, which is one of the world’s largest and most-buzzed-about furniture fairs, with more than 2,000 exhibitors on display. The fair runs in conjunction with two other shows that alternate each year: Euroluce (with international lighting releases) and EuroCucina (showcasing new innovations in kitchens). What you’ll find: Aesthetic beauty, perfected over the centuries by the Italians, is the hallmark of the show, which takes place during Milan Design Week. In addition to dramatic displays in the Mario Bellini-designed convention center (like the Cappellini booth at right from last year’s show), the city at large gets into the spirit, offering up its 17th-century palazzos, empty concrete train vaults and even 12th-century churchyards as magnificent settings for designer suites or lines of lighting, making a stroll through the already alluring Italian city full of even more magic and wonder. salonemilano.it/en/
MAISON&OBJET, PARIS JANUARY 19-23, 2018
Reason to go: While one rarely needs an excuse to visit Paris, Maison&Objet gives design aficionados added incentive, as well as a sneak peek into the lifestyle and home decor looks that will soon catch on everywhere. What you’ll find: Having originated as an exhibition of tabletop decor, the vision for the show has expanded exponentially—it now occupies eight halls, each one’s offerings ascending in grandeur, culminating in full-scale room displays by leading international brands. While the convention center is a 30-minute shuttle ride from the city, ce n’est pas grave—new grave talents to discover, like Zuza Mengham and Glassworks, the artists responsible for the objets at left, respectively, make the trip worth it. Occurring simultaneously in the city is Paris Deco Off, a showcase for the newest textiles and wallcoverings from top global companies. maison-objet.com 108 / LUXESOURCE.COM

DATE BOOK BENJAMIN HALL
In the early 2000s, California native Benjamin Hall had dropped out of high school and was spending his days surfing when one day he explored the California Polytechnic State University campus. “There was a unique cylindrical lecture building,” he recalls. “The architecture literally drew me in.” Despite not being a student, he sat in on an architecture class, and the experience changed his life. “That was the moment I knew working in the design world was the place for me,” he says. It was all the motivation Hall needed to graduate from high school, major in architecture at the University of Arizona and spend a year studying the discipline in Denmark. Postcollege, Hall worked in Seattle, Phoenix and Saudi Arabia—where he completed projects for the monarchy—before returning stateside in July 2011 to found Phoenix-based Benjamin Hall Design. Six years into his business, Hall wears four hats: designer, developer, builder and landlord. He funds, builds and manages many of his projects, perhaps the most notable being Phoenix’s White Stone Studios apartment complex, which took home the 2015 Distinguished Building award from the Arizona chapter of the American Institute of Architects. “I try to experience everyday life to the fullest,” Hall says. “When you keep yourself open, you become more aware of the small things.” For insight into his city, we chatted with Hall about how he’d spend a perfect day in the Valley of Sun. benjaminhalldesign.com

Each of these shops offers a different view into the Phoenix culture. 7 p.m. Have dinner at the delicious Forno 301 Pizzeria & Bar. “
As a lighting designer, I should not be too focused on only the light fixture, but how that fixture interacts with the entire space, even if I don’t know what that space looks like.
” LED: LIGHTING THE FUTURE
An evolution in lighting design has taken place, incorporating new materials and technologies. Instead of retrofitting existing designs with LEDs, Hubbardton Forge has been developing designs specifically around the technology. To this end, the company has developed new initiatives, like using a local glassblower for many of its pieces and working with a local firm to develop LED components, thereby decreasing its environmental footprint. “We’re using LEDs in new and interesting ways,” Kitts says. “With our Möbius mini pendant, we were able to shape and form the light-guide element so that it becomes a sculptural aspect of the piece.”
1
When lighting the kitchen or bath, Hubbardton Forge’s director of design, David Kitts, has this one directive. “Select light fixtures that you love; not just like. The bathroom should be your own personal oasis, and your kitchen should be a place where friends and family gather.” Insightful advice from the design lead of America’s foremost luxury lighting manufacturer. Lighting sets the mood, so he suggests mini pendants in multiples over a kitchen island and a chandelier or pendant with dimmable light above the tub. “The pendants won’t interfere with the line of sight for guests or family in the kitchen, and the chandelier creates a spa-like atmosphere in the bath,” he continues. A true American success story, Hubbardton Forge is known for pushing the limits of form and materials to create handcrafted designs that meld the artistry and functionality of lighting. With 230 designers and makers, engineers and production team and staff, the HF team views the world through unique prisms as they create beautiful pieces. Take Kitts’ recent trip to Reykjavik, Iceland, where its street art opened his eyes to a new way of looking at lighting. “I was inspired not by the content or quality of the work, but how the art interacted and contributed to the space, the building and the neighborhood,” he says. “Walking past the same mural on a sunny day and then again on a stormy day could be two very different experiences.”

According to the team at Cosentino, when it comes to surface solutions, granite has always been popular, but more consumers are moving toward quartz for its array of colors, lower maintenance and higher durability. And when it comes to style, they’re seeing contemporary themes, including industrial (midcentury modern and coastal), that combine clean lines, built-ins and simple cabinetry. As innovators in the world of kitchens and baths, Cosentino should know. The global company offers the latest in surfacing solutions by staying at the forefront of trends and manufacturing technologies. With the widest array of color and material choices, the company stresses the importance of cohesiveness so everything works together in the completed space. “Think long term,” the team says. “ ‘Will you love that bold color in a few years?’ ‘If you sell your home, would your choices be appealing to other buyers?’ “ They also cite the importance of weighing your lifestyle as much as your style. “While it’s easy to make decisions based on looks alone, it’s important to think about how you use your space.” These answers inform everything from material choice to amenities one should include in their kitchen or bath.

STYLISH + SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS When you choose Cosentino products, you are getting the best on the market. Their advanced technical qualities, wide color options and 25-year warranty stand apart from the rest. For countertops, the new N-Boost advancement improves the color and luster of Silestone quartz, and makes it easier to clean than ever before. And while Dekton, the ultracompact surface with superior durability, isn’t new, Cosentino continues to create innovative color options that replicate the look of other materials. For energy efficiency and environmentally friendly products, Silestone’s ECO Line delivers with a series of colors made from up to 75-percent-recycled content, while Dekton Trillium is made from 60-percentrecycled content. Additionally, the company pays special attention to maintaining low emissions and a 98-percent reuse of water.

For 75 years, Wood-Mode has been producing high-quality cabinetry with time-honored techniques that blend timeless craftsmanship and functionality with a fashionforward approach to design.
”
For affluent homeowners and designers, Wood-Mode products are easily recognizable, from their wide variety of stains and finishes, to well-proportioned door styles and detailed moldings. But the high-end cabinetry manufacturer goes beyond the surface with smart features, such as motion technology for doors, unique storage solutions and integrated lighting, that increase the functional use of any space. “The integration of LED lighting into Wood-Mode cabinet interiors continues to evolve and will become more prevalent,” director of design John Troxell says. “Technology and design innovations have made former challenges, such as interior, recessed vertical lighting and drawer bank lighting, a standard option now.” When discussing trending styles, Troxell says transitional and contemporary looks continue, drawing on recycled materials or midcentury modern details to define the effect. No matter the style, the team at Wood-Mode agrees—cohesion is key. And when starting any renovation, they offer these tried-and-true tips: Do your homework; develop a wish list; establish a budget and a time frame; and collect images of rooms, features and products you like. Troxell adds, “A growing array of materials and finish applications will provide consumers and designers with greater possibilities to create kitchens and other rooms that are uniquely personal.”

WOOD-MODE ON … ILLUMINATION + INNOVATION Wealthy urban and suburban homeowners are increasing the square footage of their kitchens, combining multiple spaces into one large, open-concept area. This provides us with a lot of opportunities, including custom-made furniture like bookcases and desks, along with breakfast nooks and multipurpose islands. Designers and homeowners also have the option to select species and finishes that complement or contrast within their design. Other trends include interior lighting with integrated LED, under-cabinet and in-cabinet options. We continue to be inspired by advances in storage and functionality as well. And metal is making its mark, with stainless-steel countertops and metallic fronts for cabinets increasing in demand.

THE WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN AND BATH
ZEPHYR
When asked to describe the philosophy behind Zephyr, company president Luke Siow says, “We strive to transform the kitchen through design, discovery and care. Through our products, design partnerships and innovative technology, we hope to elevate the kitchen as a center for self-expression, family and well-being.” Fait accompli for the foremost kitchen hood manufacturer, marking its 20th anniversary this year with a look back at the defining moments in the company’s history and its game-changing hoods. The first manufacturer to bring performance and power-driven ventilation to the kitchen, Zephyr made a name for itself with the introduction of its European-style chimney hoods. Since that time, the company has launched industry firsts such as its DCBL Suppression System®, and Bloom™ HD and BriteStrip™ LED products. Zephyr continues to break design barriers and give designers and consumers more options with its new Black Stainless Steel hoods with titanium coating; a sleek alternative to stainless steel. “Consumers believe that heightened design should be central in the kitchen, and are uncompromising when it comes to performance and quality,” Siow says. With thoughtful designs and an ongoing commitment to technological advancement, Zephyr elevated the kitchen hood from a purely utilitarian appliance to an eye-catching, artful centerpiece.
2
“
Zephyr continues to change the marketplace by blending form and function to create beautiful, high-quality hoods that are an asset to any home.
”

Aligned with this design-centric approach, the company has partnered with leading designers who balance aesthetics and technology with a masterful eye. In 2004, Zephyr released the Cheng Collection—a signature line of hoods through an exclusive partnership with design guru Fu-Tung Cheng, bringing his artistic and timeless style to the masses. Not long after, Robert Brunner, founder of Ammunition Design Group and the creative powerhouse behind products like Beats by Dre, joined Zephyr to create the innovative Arc Collection. A geometrically stunning marriage of glass and metal, this collection offers designers and homeowners modern sophistication at its finest.

THE RESTAURANT AT HOTEL PANACHE PARIS, FRANCE Located in the lively opera district of the city’s 9th arrondissement, this Art Nouveau-inspired bistro is emblematic of the neighborhood’s storied past and innate creative energy. Influenced by the triangular shape of the building, Parisian designer Dorothee Meilichzon, of Chzon, fostered continuity throughout with geometric details like round light fixtures and striped and hexagonal patterns, along with bright pops of color, all while maintaining the restaurant’s classical French integrity—as seen in the pieces shown here.

INTERIOR DESIGNER MARASILBER.COM
At first sight: I’m completely impressed with Oeuffice’s penchant for reimagining the classics: They manage to create sculptural works of art that are equally functional and versatile. On composition: It’s against this backdrop that the stools prove their inherent duality. They feel natural against the exposed brick but would also easily hold their own in both a formal or contemporary setting. As far as design goes… Italy really has no limits. These stools resonate with the country’s influential style in part because of the simple application of elegant, timeless materials; the Cipollino Apuano marble is super-sleek, the travertine is very porous, and the Rosa Perlino marble is full of movement. Each element is independently unassuming, but in union, striking works of art are born. Lasting impression: Refined, sculptural, bold, fresh and playful.

POST MATES THE PIECES: Ionik Stool and Tuskan Stool THE DESIGNER: Oeuffice FIND IT: mattermatters.com THE INSPIRATION: When Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte and Jakub Zak’s creativity united in 2011 to form their U.K.-based design laboratory, Oueffice, they challenged themselves to imagine limited-edition objects, that were reminiscent of utopian ideals and innovation. Enter the Ionik and Tuskan stools, both part of a second coming of the studio’s Kapital collection and based on primitive stone columns resonant with classical architecture. Handcrafted in Italy using solid-stone blocks, they are modern in aesthetic and scale but maintain the integrity of their inspirational era—an edgy balance very much in line with the contemporary duo’s manifesto.

PALETTE PLEASER THE PIECE: Spring Lamp in Irish Green THE DESIGNER: Mathieu Lehanneur FIND IT: carpentersworkshopgallery.com THE INSPIRATION: Paris-based designer/artist/science enthusiast Mathieu Lehanneur dreamed up the Spring lamp, alongside its counterparts from the Spring series, with the intention of transporting design lovers to a land of natural and ecological metamorphosis. Lehanneur’s aim to create eye-catching objects that examine nature’s poetic side is realized in this delicate lighting fixture, comprised of a bundle of hand-blown, ribbed-glass tubes in a rich green marble base. Along with other materials from the series, both the marble and glass were incorporated into the piece in their natural color and condition— inciting a primitive moment in an otherwise distinctly modern piece.
LX_COM14_Market_Spotlight.indd 148
OLIVER M. FURTH INTERIOR DESIGNER OLIVERMFURTH.COM
At first sight: There’s a wonderful sense of fluidity to this light fixture, almost like water that’s lit from within. Artist to artist: In my own work, I’m constantly trying to push the design dialogue forward, and this piece falls in that special spot between design and sculpture. Lehanneur is playing with our preconceived notions of what a lamp is and propelling those ideas a little further. It’s important… To know the rules before you break them. Here, the artist is clearly informed about design, which is why any risks taken clearly paid off. Global musings: As our world becomes larger, it’s increasingly important to look inward and become more focused. For example, I try to figure out what an area offers that’s specific to that place, whether woven silk textiles in Laos or innovative lighting in Paris. I am always on the hunt for the offbeat and the unusual. The French… Have been innovators in decorative arts since AndréCharles Boulle’s then-groundbreaking furniture in the 17th century, and I think Lehanneur is definitely following in the footsteps of his countrymen. Lasting impression: This design is sculptural, graceful, fluid, lyrical and dynamic.

CRATE MATTERS THE PIECE: P2 Lavinia Exagonal Armchair THE DESIGNER: Lazzarini & Pickering for Marta Sala Éditions FIND IT: thefutureperfect.com THE INSPIRATION: A second collaboration between noted Italian architect Marta Sala and Roman architectural studio Lazzarini & Pickering brings us the P2 Lavinia Exagonal armchair, a showstopper from Marta Sala Éditions’ Collection No – 2. Shown in a sumptuous Pierre Frey fabric, the seat’s striking shape and seductive proportions incite immediate interest. One would expect no less from this power collab, but there is still something to be said about a design that equally prizes comfort and allure. And in the case of the P2 Lavinia: Mission accomplished.
LEO PARRELLA
INTERIOR DESIGNER LEOPARRELLA.COM
At first sight: The Lavania Exagonal armchair is incredibly modern and reminiscent of Italian furniture from the 1960s and ’70s—a fitting result from this pairing of industry leaders. The piece is as smart from behind as it is straight on, and the exacting lines are both gorgeous and unapologetic. As a first-generation Italian… I may be biased, but I feel that Italy is the undisputed leader in design. Be it automobiles or architecture, furniture or fashion, the legacy of our people is bold, thoughtful design, and this piece is clearly Italian-born. Global gatherers: The hunt and find is one of the more thrilling parts of what I get to do with interiors. Pieces collected from around the world add that transportive element of a life welllived. And an international piece with heritage or a good story gives a sense of being collected rather than assembled. Lasting impression: This striking seat reads as stylish, architectural, luxurious and dramatic.

SEND AND DELIVER THE PIECES: Mali Vases and Jethi Vases THE DESIGNER: Jaimal Odedra FIND IT: maisongerard.com THE INSPIRATION: Moved by the melodious rhythm of bamboo forests, decorated fashion vet Jaimal Odedra set out to explore a new medium with his Mali and Jethi vases. Using bronze in the traditional sand-casting technique, the vases are handmade by artisans in Morocco, and though Odedra visualizes each form and silhouette, the life of each piece is organically determined by the skilled hands that shape it—resulting in one-of-a-kind mini masterpieces.
CONSUELO PIERREPONT AND KATIE SPALDING INTERIOR DESIGNERS SWAY-STUDIO.COM
At first sight: Jaimal’s pieces exude a dramatic subtlety and a relaxed-luxe nature. They’re extremely elevated and yet artisanal all at once. We are really drawn… To the versatility of these beautiful objects. They are such unique designs but don’t have an obvious provenance, in the best way possible. In design, culture and spirit… Morocco is perpetually inspiring with its use of colors, shapes and the effortless ability to seamlessly blend everything together. While these vases are a more modern interpretation of these traits, they embody the country’s unmistakable mélange of the organic and the well-crafted. Global musings: Nothing adds layers like sourcing from around the world. Our clients want to know the stories that are attached to a piece; they want us to use pieces that tell a part of their story. Jaimal’s works seem to do just that. Lasting impression: Fluid, effortless and memorable.

MEGAN PFLUG
INTERIOR DESIGNER MEGANPFLUGDESIGNS.COM
At first sight: The Celestial bowls are the perfect fusion of traditional forms with modernized midcentury ideals. While the shapes are evocative of ancient pottery, the studded embellishments are extremely current and pack an edgy punch. Ceramics (and Tulum for that matter) are… Having a huge moment, which makes Elad’s latest collection even more special and relevant. It’s really lovely to see regions with a long-standing relationship to these materials and techniques making a mark on contemporary design. The resulting pieces always seem to have the most integrity. At home: I imagine these objects functioning beautifully as both decor and utilitarian objects. I’m already picturing filling them with fruit or creating an unexpected floral arrangement. Lasting impressing: The Celestial bowls are modern, punk, classical and statement-making.

CASED GOODS THE PIECES: Celestial Bowl on Stand in Gold + Green and Celestial Bowl on Stand in Gold + Black THE DESIGNER: Elad Yifrach FIND IT: l-objet.com THE INSPIRATION: Elad Yifrach, the mastermind behind lifestyle brand L’Objet, fell in love with Tulum, Mexico, the moment his senses connected with the town’s lustrous and unparalleled warmth and energy. This beachy nook along the Yucatan Peninsula and its storied history inspired a collection of earthy, charmingly desaturated and understated yet elegant pieces. The Celestial bowls, especially, speak to Yifrach’s devotion to Tulum’s vibrancy and aesthetic: a little bit wild but nevertheless the pinnacle of authenticity.

WHITE GLOVE THE PIECE: The Man Ray Glass Leaf Mirror THE DESIGNER: Cox London FIND IT: rosetarlow.com THE INSPIRATION: After years of creative collaboration and a mutual affinity for the decorative arts, design duo Christopher and Nicola Cox officially joined forces in 2005 with the launch of their London studio. Ever since then, they have been producing exquisite and original pieces—the Man Ray mirror being no exception. A love letter to 19th-century French Dieppe bone mirrors, the Man Ray is a striking blend of handpulled ivory glass leaves, carved silver gilt wood and hand-silvered mirror plate, and embodies the very vision of its creators: designs that are rich in technique and timelessness.
MAX HUMPHREY INTERIOR DESIGNER MAXHUMPHREY.COM
At first sight: This showstopper of a mirror appeals to me in that it is extremely delicate but commanding of your attention—a true statement piece indeed. It also speaks to the fabulousness of Cox London as a company. Add Rose Tarlow’s stamp of approval and I’m sold. As an Anglophile… With a lifelong obsession for all things British—pop music, movies, art and design—this mirror epitomizes the U.K. tradition of things not always being what they seem. At first, I thought it was comprised of a million little shark teeth à la Damien Hirst’s renowned tiger shark in formaldehyde sculpture, which like this mirror, doesn’t fully register until staring it right in the face. On composition: I love the contrast of this fragile piece dwelling in an industrial space, when one would normally anticipate it living in a traditional environment. Lasting impression: This mirror is delicate, intricate, beautiful and unexpected.

However, the space—featuring a customizable cabinet system designed by Piero Lissoni for Boffi with black granite countertops and appliances from Gaggenau, Miele and Sub-Zero—is in fact ensconced in one of The Mark’s Premier Three-Bedroom Suites in New York City. Designers Tara Mangini and Percy Bright of Jersey Ice Cream Company specified this kitchen within an apartment-like suite in Philadelphia’s Lokal Hotel with simple lines and Shaker-style millwork inspired by its surroundings. The kitchen also pairs light plaster walls with darker bottom cabinets to great effect as a nod to colorways of centuries past. “Design-wise, we took as many cues as we could from the historic neighborhood, one rich in American manufacturing history and beautiful late-19 th-century buildings,” explains Bright. staylokal.com

VENICE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES DESIGN BACKGROUND: When a home-essentials brand with the perfect formula for fluffy towels debuts a luxury hotel, you know it’s time to book your next getaway. PREPARE FOR TAKE-OFF AS LUXE SETS AN INTERNATIONAL AGENDA THAT INCLUDES AMAZING ARCHITECTURE, INSPIRING INTERIORS AND MUST-SEE SIGHTS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER
FLIGHT OF FANCY Modern technology has put inspiration at our fingertips, dissolving traditional boundaries and making even the most remote pockets of the planet feel within reach. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the world of design, where at any given moment, creatives have access to a virtual library of beautiful images and products from around the globe without ever having to leave home. While armchair travel is a lovely way to kill a few hours, sometimes it’s necessary to put down that smartphone, hop on a plane and go see the sights firsthand. After all, there’s no comparison to experiencing the architecture of Marrakesh or Shanghai in person. To that end, we recruited a few of our favorite industry experts to share some of their top international spots for design lovers.
English artist Claire Brewster creates intricate paper sculptures from cut-out maps of the world. Birds in flight are a favorite subject, as in Done and Dusted shown here.

MARRAKESH EXPRESS
One look at her iconic line of carpets and textiles, and you can see the Moroccan inspiration behind Madeline Weinrib’s work. The New York-based designer has been making annual pilgrimages to Marrakesh for nearly 20 years. Below, she presents her top recommendations for shopping and sustenance. madelineweinrib.com
PLACES TO SHOP:
PLACES TO EAT:
33 RUE MAJORELLE Like a smaller version of the legendary Parisian boutique Colette, this open-concept shop just opposite the Majorelle Garden is stocked with an expertly curated collection of clothes, jewelry and art by local designers.
DAR YACOUT Designed by Bill Willis, the late American architect and decorator who helped put Marrakesh on the style map, this dining spot serves a set menu amid dramatic decor. Plan ahead; reservations are a must.
ALNOUR Located in the medina, or old city, this workshop and store is a social enterprise for handicapped women who are skilled in the art of embroidery. They sell exquisite, handmade linens for the home, as well as clothing. EL FENN BOUTIQUE With its impressive art collection and drop-dead gorgeous interiors, El Fenn, from Vanessa Branson, Virgin mogul Richard Branson’s sister, is one of the most stylish stays in the medina. Now, it features an adjoining boutique with an array of wonderful home goods, which can be shipped globally. I’ve collaborated with them on a collection of pillows, and all proceeds from sales benefit a foundation that teaches women to weave in the Atlas Mountains.
LX_COM14_TheReport.indd 180
NOMAD RESTAURANT With a modern menu that features fresh salads, Nomad is my favorite place for lunch in the medina. The café has a lovely terrace that overlooks “spice square,” where you can view all the exotic spice vendors. Bonus: They take craft cocktails seriously here. LALLA French owner Laetitia Trouillet crafts chic handbags—think studded leather clutches—and accessories at this boutique in the hip Guéliz district. Her bags, scarves and headbands make wonderful gifts for friends back home.
DAR MOHA This restaurant was once the home of French designer Pierre Balmain. I like to sit by the pool, but all the rooms are charming. There is a set menu with many courses of Moroccan food, so be prepared for a feast.
MAISON DU KAFTAN Perhaps no article of clothing conjures images of Morocco quite like the free-flowing kaftan. Also located in the medina, this store is stocked with versions of the garment in all colors, styles and price ranges.
BELDI COUNTRY CLUB If you need a peaceful respite from the commotion of the souk, you can’t beat this place for a leisurely swim or a spa treatment. Grab a French-style lunch by the pool—the salade nicoise is divine!

ARTFUL LODGER Jasper Conran has designed women’s fashion, menswear, accessories and home goods, but he’s never attached his name and aesthetic to a hotel—until now. L’Hôtel Marrakech is the British designer’s first foray into luxury lodging. “Opening a hotel has brought together all that I enjoy working on the most: food, textiles, interiors and gardens,” he says. Located in a 19th-century riad (a traditional Moroccan dwelling with an interior courtyard) in the heart of the medina, the otherworldly retreat combines modern-day amenities with oldfashioned glamour. “Marrakesh is a city of amazing contrasts where one can wander along dark alleys and emerge into exquisite gardens and beautiful courtyards,” he says. “I wanted to make L’Hôtel Marrakech a comfortable home, where people feel immediately welcome and happy.” l-hotelmarrakech.com
3 a la mode A half century ago, the desert city of Marrakesh cast a spell over fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, forever influencing his work. To honor that legacy, the long-awaited Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, designed by Studio KO, will open its doors in October. Located on the street bearing his name near the Jardin Marjorelle—the legendary garden that he and longtime partner Pierre Bergé saved from development in 1980—the museum will feature permanent and rotating exhibitions as well as a library, café and restaurant. “This city deeply influenced Yves’ life and work, particularly his discovery of color,” says Bergé. “The Studio KO architects share this passion for Marrakesh and their clean, uncluttered style recalls his work.”

4 HALLO BERLIN!
German architect Gisbert Pöppler has crafted sophisticated, jewel-box spaces throughout Berlin during his 20-year career. Over the years, he’s cultivated a number of favorite haunts throughout the art-centric city. Below, he shares a few picks. gisbertpoeppler.com
Emperor Wilhelm II, and its garden is a calming hideaway in the middle of the city.
8:30 a.m. I love starting the day with breakfast in the Wintergarten café at Literaturhaus Berlin. The villa was built in 1889, during the reign of
2 p.m. I stop by Trouvé-Berlin for a little treasure hunting. This vintage furniture store is dedicated to French and Italian design of the 20th century.
10 a.m. Head to Berlinische Galerie (shown above), a new museum whose primary collection is composed of art produced in the city, spanning from 1870 to present-day. 12 p.m. Hunger strikes, so I pop into Salumeria Lamuri, a casual Italian restaurant located in the Kreuzberg neighborhood. It’s my favorite intimate spot for a satisfying lunch with a good glass of wine.
5
3 p.m. For treasure of a different sort, visit René Talmon l’Armée’s shop. The jewelry designer makes beautiful pieces using 18-karat gold, oxidized silver and naturally colored diamonds. 4 p.m. To get a sense of Berlin’s decadence in the 1920s, check out the museum at the LiebermannVilla. German painter Max Liebermann’s old summer residence by Lake Wannsee holds many of the artist’s paintings and has an impressive garden. 7 p.m. Briefmarken Weine is a low-key wine bar that occupies a former East German storefront— its neon sign “Briefmarken” translates to “stamps.” With amazing pasta, antipasto and wine, it’s the perfect spot to end the day.
AGAINST THE GRAIN
File this one under happy accidents: Cologne-based designer Meike Harde was staining fabric when some of the pigment spilled onto her wooden worktop, leaving streaks of bold color to run along the grain of the surface. In that moment, her Wooden Aquarelle project was born. Based on a technique once used by German Expressionist painters, Harde’s process of applying color to wood is random, so no two panels are alike. With their intense hues and soft transitions, the panels resemble dreamy, hypnotic watercolors. When applied to furnishings, like the triangular nesting tables seen here, the effect is mesmerizing. meikeharde.com

LOCAL FLAVOR Nearly 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German city has enjoyed a renewed reputation as a decadent and cosmopolitan hub for the international art and design scene, and many of its unique hotels reflect that vibe. Here, we present four urban retreats that cater to individualized style.

SHANGHAI SURPRISE
There’s no shortage of personality in Jamie Drake’s glamorous, modern, color-saturated interiors. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that the celebrated New York designer also has a reputation for being quite the bon vivant. What better insider to share his idea of a perfect day in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai? drakeanderson.com 7:30 a.m. Rise and shine at The Peninsula hotel located right on The Bund, the famed waterfront promenade. Enjoy the view of the new city of Pudong across the Huangpu River. From here, I can see the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, an awesome 1,535-foot spire that looks like it came right off the pages of a futuristic comic book. 8:30 a.m. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the lobby, the hotel’s airy and spacious hub. The smoked salmon with a single scrambled egg is perfect, and the breads and pastries from the buffet are hard to resist; though, I do try to limit myself. 10 a.m. I always make time after breakfast for a relaxed morning walk along The Bund to admire the city. It’s a good way to get revved up for the day ahead, and it’s the best time to avoid the massive crowds that descend on the area at

lunchtime. With so many different types of buildings, the neighborhood is a living museum of architectural styles. 12:30 p.m. Off to the Longhua Pagoda and Temple. It features a vegetarian restaurant, which is quite common for an active Buddhist temple. The superb main course is a soup bowl filled with carefully prepared garden delights and noodles. In the nearby entry area, school children learn how to make dumplings. 2 p.m. After lunch, tour the pagoda and temple with one of the monks as a guide. The multiple buildings are filled with spectacular carved and gilded deities. I’m in awe of one of the halls in particular; it’s filled with 500 golden statues. My kind of army—peace-loving and glittering! 3 p.m. Check out more furniture showrooms in the design district around Jiangning Road. Some of the wares are eye-poppingly over-the-top, but there are a few quieter, modern offerings as well. 5:30 p.m. Sneak back to the hotel for a muchneeded rest and pre-dinner nap. 8 p.m. If you grow weary of Asian food, opt for French food at the sensational bistro Franck, located in the French Concession neighborhood.
By this time, a martini up with a twist is sorely needed, and much enjoyed. When I’m there, I order a traditional Gallic meal and wash it down with a light Beaujolais. For dessert: rich and decadent chocolate mousse. 10:45 p.m. Lights out—until the next time. Xie Xie!

INSIDE STORY For over 20 years, Kerry Phelan has been a leading force in the Melbourne design scene, creating elegant spaces that are understated but luxurious. Here, she gives us the scoop on her effortlessly hip hometown. kpdo.com
What quality makes Melbourne design unique? Melbourne has a different feel than Sydney. It has a colder climate, and it’s moodier; whereas, Sydney is all about the sunshine and the harbor. Our design always nods to our natural environment. Why do you think the city is having a moment? The influx of a lot of new restaurants, cafés and bars has given designers a chance to be more adventurous. Also, the residential property market is extremely competitive—developers not only employ designers as a marketing tool, but also to promote a Melbourne lifestyle. Finally, there’s Instagram, which is creating its own, universal visual language, bringing Australian design to an international audience.
DRAMATIC TURN Sydney designer Greg Natale, known for his fondness of bold colors and geometric patterns, has won international acclaim for his tailored, sophisticated interiors. Read on for his take on design in the land down under. gregnatale.com What sets Australian design apart? I think our geography has helped to create our own “international” style. We’re influenced by our traditional European roots, but we also admire the creativity and industriousness of America. Factor in our proximity to Asia and our mild climate, and you can see how Australian design has evolved into its own thing.
the Art Gallery of New South Wales, which is next to the Royal Botanic Gardens, or the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, which is nestled on the shores of Sydney Harbor. It may sound clichéd, but if you’re ever in town, you must visit the Sydney Opera House to see a show and take in the amazing architecture by Jørn Utzon.
Favorite Aussie designers past and present: I am a big admirer of the late architect Harry Seidler. His work was ahead of its time and his career spanned many decades. His projects weren’t always warmly received, but his provocative work defined a style and an era of Australian architecture.
Dream project: I would love to try my hand at a private jet—who wouldn’t! There’s a challenge in creating a chic interior with so many restrictions on space and functionality.
Must-see sites when visiting Sydney: As an art lover, I always make sure to drop into
LX_COM14_TheReport.indd 185
Favorite local design brands: Chris Connell Design is brilliant for all things furniture, product, interiors and architecture; he’s been a driving force over the last 25 years for original design. And Bruce Rowe from Anchor Ceramics does phenomenal sculpture and planter vessels.
Up next: I recently launched a collection of decorative glass mosaic tiles with Italian brand Bisazza. I also did a new collection of hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk rugs, and I’ve got new housewares out later this year.

F
or Caleb Burkee, woodworking has been a lifelong affair. Established by his mother shortly after he was born, Burkee Designs grew as he did. “I began my shop career in the crib, playing with wood scraps while my parents worked on various furniture projects,” he says. “I was observing every move from the beginning and was involved in the work by the age of 5.” By the time Burkee was contemplating what career he would pursue, the answer was obvious. He acquired the Cottonwoodbased business in 2000 and has been in production ever since. Crafting exclusive lines of furniture, as well as custom pieces, Burkee Designs provides beautiful works of art and function to homeowners throughout Arizona, most frequently between the Sedona area and North Scottsdale. Encompassing a large number of second homes, Northern Arizona offers Burkee and his team the unique opportunity to create multiple pieces for each client, resulting in a body of work that spans the country. “The high desert landscape of Northern Arizona blends well with the simplicity of contemporary design and minimalism,” Burkee says. “However, I would say about 40 percent of our clientele resides between two homes, so we do have work in many states across the country. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to explore my creativity.”
2
The Heritage of Artisans “My family is the largest creative influence in my life,” Burkee says. “I come from a family of well-established artists who consistently expanded my horizons and inspired me to explore my gifts. I was instilled with the understanding that as long as I was investing myself in something I was passionate about, I could expect full support from my family. I now have a family of my own, and my wife and I work to instill that same ethos in our four daughters.”

“The early buildings of the national parks have inspired my work for decades.” 1

hile working in the commercial sector, architect Clint Miller began to delve into residential projects. Upon receiving the Homes of the Year award from the American Institute of Architects in 1997, he decided to make a more permanent shift to residential work. Since then, he has designed homes in neighborhoods from California to Santa Fe, New Mexico, but most often creates in a region he frequently calls home—Northern Arizona. “We spend extended weekends in Pine, which allows me to focus on Alpine projects,” Miller says. “The location provides easy access to clients throughout Northern Arizona.” As for why he chooses to spend time living and working in the area, Miller points to the variety of communities that offers abundant architectural opportunities. “I feel a vibe for Flagstaff that is different from that of the White Mountains or Prescott,” he says. “We can design a home with cues from the historic lumbering past or one that is more present; a reinterpretation of the past that evolves into a new idea while retaining a flavor unique to its location.” With a portfolio of work in Forest Highlands, Strawberry Hollow, The Portal and White Mountain Summer Homes, Miller designs with local experience and knowledge at hand.

THE WORK OF A REGIONAL ARCHITECT + Many of Miller’s Alpine residences are inspired by early national parks buildings, using exposed beams, load-bearing walls of stone

and post-and-beam construction. “This means the working structure of the home also becomes its character,” Miller says. + The firm’s homes connect to the landscape, engaging rock outcroppings, tall pines and major view corridors. Miller elaborates, “The homes look as if they belong to the landscape. The site and home are each made better for the other.” + “A storybook impression is often the goal,” Miller says of his designs. “Traditional forms and structures can convey an image of the past and look natural in their setting. We love it when the magic comes together, and the home feels comfortable and romantic.” 3

For more than two decades, architect Clint Miller has striven to design homes that form a union with their site, whether integrating into lush urban communities or growing organically from the surrounding forest. Miller’s body of work balances delicate details and bold composition, melding traditional techniques and materials with sensitive design and application. Each home expresses an organic relationship between site and design. Each structure respects its site, rather than imposing itself on the site.

or Josh and Jamie Procknow, owning a pool building business is the fulfillment of a long-held dream. After working in the industry for more than eight years, they founded their firm, Custom Water Creations, in 2002. Today, they maintain a passion for their work, putting emphasis on quality and striving to make each client’s vision a reality. Given its Northern Arizona location and the outdoor nature of the trade, the Custom Water Creations team begins each project with careful study of the space in which they are to work. “In order to see a client’s dream realized, it’s important to observe and plan around the unique climate and environmental changes found in Northern Arizona,” Josh says. “It is critical that a builder is aware of how different materials will respond to the concerns the region presents.” More than its reputation as one large desert, Northern Arizona’s topography often catches visitors off guard. While it does feature plenty of desert area, it also boasts lush, beautiful vistas, changing seasons and mountainous terrain. “Those unfamiliar with our state are often surprised by the landscape,” Josh says. “They expect hot, brown and dry desert, and they find a welcoming climate, with an abundance of vegetation. The only thing needed to achieve the full feeling of a personal oasis is a pool or spa in the backyard. The climate here allows for the use of a swimming pool five months out of the year, even longer if you have a heated pool, for which solar is a great option.”

ounded in Sedona by Don Nanke and Howard Madole, Nanke Signature Group is a fourth-generation, familyowned and -operated company going on 70 years. Based in Arizona from its beginning, the firm boasts a team of professionals—from architects and builders to interior designers—who understand the local climate, client and culture. “At Nanke Signature Group, we believe that a home is sacred,” Nanke says. “For us, it sets the stage for daily life, encapsulating memories, thoughts, personalities and imagination. The space becomes our client’s personal canvas, realized through our passionate team of artists.” Believing a home should feel as though it was dropped into the landscape without disturbing the terrain, the firm has found ample success in Northern Arizona, which possesses breathtaking natural surroundings that are highly valued among its inhabitants. While architectural styles in the area vary greatly, the NSG team notes a particular interest in a more rustic look. As for the residential demographic, Nanke says, “It’s not uncommon for people to have homes in Phoenix for the winter and Northern Arizona for the summer. Most often though, our clients’ primary homes are local. While they may have second homes out of state, they reside, most of the time, in Arizona.”

fter meeting his wife while visiting friends in Flagstaff, Jay Reitz—then a carpentry contractor in New York—decided to follow two new dreams: marrying his wife, first and foremost, and founding a custom home building and remodeling firm. Today, Reitz and his wife live in Flagstaff, with their three boys and Reitz Builders to keep them busy. While they build in a variety of aesthetic styles, Reitz and his team have one overarching focus: timelessness. “We have a bit of an old-world philosophy when it comes to building homes,” he says. “We design and build everything to the best of our ability, because we want what we do to last for generations.” As Northern Arizona only grows in popularity, and longtime residents bring more and more family into the region, this dedication to creating high-quality, enduring residences has served Reitz Builders well. As for the area’s unique appeal, Reitz points to a mixture of community and climate. “Flagstaff is a laidback town, which was hard for this New Yorker to get used to in many ways, but the great variety of food, family activities and cool summer climate quickly won me over,” he says. “Even in the dead of winter, you can be in Sedona, where there is plenty of golfing, biking and hiking year-round, in 45 minutes.” Describing the region’s growth as continual and stable, Reitz anticipates Flagstaff, in particular, becoming more of a destination city over the next 10 years. 1

ith 10 years of regional experience and a reputation as the “authority on green design,” Tanya Shively—an ASID- and LEED AP-certified designer—crafts interior spaces that exude a welcoming feel, a customized personality and zero VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Her firm, Sesshu Design Associates, is focused on a desire to improve people’s lives and well-being through sustainable, healthy and luxurious design. “We work in collaboration with our clients to create eco-friendly, innovative, timeless and beautiful homes,” Shively says. “Our priority is to make every space as healthy as possible. This means using only materials and products that are free of VOCs, maximize light and views, and bring nature inside whenever possible.” Known for its breathtaking vistas, Northern Arizona has proven an ideal location for Shively to carry out this mission. On the subject of her locale, the designer notes her portfolio’s ample assortment of second and third homes. “Frequently, my clients have a primary residence in another state,” she explains. “They build their business in the Midwest or enjoy the tax advantages of Nevada, Wyoming and Montana, but have a home in Arizona for the weather and activities.” Inspired by the colors, textures and perfect harmony of her surrounding natural environment, Shively strives to design spaces that complement and delight their inhabitants in every way.

fter completing an interior design program at the prestigious Interior Design Institute in Denver, Colorado, Stephanie Larsen moved to Orange County, California, and worked with a team for two years. Then, she decided she was ready to found her own firm. She moved to Sedona and did just that, opening Stephanie Larsen Interior Design. As for the location she chose, Larsen says, “After living in Orange County, I knew the hustle and bustle wasn’t for me. One visit to Sedona ensured me this resort community was where I wanted to establish my boutique firm. I love being in Sedona. It’s a great place to live and work.” Focusing on only a handful of high-end residential projects each year, Larsen prides herself on being involved in every detail of each design. Describing Northern Arizona as “amazing, beautiful and spiritual,” she touches on the true nature of a region known for its breathtaking views and inherent peace. In regard to the area’s architectural and interior design styles, Larsen notes a slight shift from the adobe aesthetic to a Southwest contemporary style, with a sense of warmth and durability of materials. Creating stunning interiors in locally renowned neighborhoods, such as Casa Contenta, The Aerie and Cross Creek Ranch, Larsen has become known for her ability to stay true—to the client’s desires, her own intuition, and the home’s architecture, location and landscape.

alking Rock Ranch is considered a gem within one of Northern Arizona’s most sought-after areas—Prescott. Symmetry Companies, the community’s managing partner, believes community development and luxury living are enhanced when all involved feel united and empowered to put forth their best efforts. “Our brand is about connection, and when every individual and every aspect of community development are engaged and in sync, wonderful results are achieved,” Symmetry CEO Taber Anderson says. “In Talking Rock, we saw an environment which enabled its members to be close to the lively, historic downtown, while providing a quiet, high desert landscape in the shadows of Granite Mountain.” Just 20 minutes north of downtown Prescott, which is often deemed “America’s Hometown,” Talking Rock boasts dramatic topography and stunning views. As for design preferences in the region, a love of nature has, according to the Symmetry team, resulted in an aesthetic shift, from traditional to a more modern look that brings nature indoors through materials and creative features. Further describing the local lifestyle, Anderson says, “It is an active one. Residents take full advantage of a mild climate, countless hiking and biking trails, and endless opportunities to be outdoors. It embraces a slower pace than bigger cities, still celebrating its Western traditions and small-town pleasantries.” Talking Rock Ranch is owned by Harvard Investments and Symmetry Companies.

PRESCOTT: HISTORY + GEOGRAPHY Legacy of the land. “Talking Rock Ranch has a rich history dating back to the original settlers of the land, the Yavapai Indian tribe,” Anderson says. “The developers have donated the four acres of sacred land to the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe. This is a special place where time stands still.” Multifaceted appeal. Typically praised for its charming environment, Prescott has another superlative trait— premium air quality. Anderson elaborates, “Positioned at a livable elevation, Prescott enjoys a crisp, clean atmosphere, where clear days give way to dark, peaceful evenings.”

Through her firm, Weinman Architectural Services, she strives to provide the same getaway for each client. She credits the region’s stunning natural beauty and agreeable climate, which makes for an ideal indoor-outdoor living environment, as responsible for Northern Arizona’s distinctive appeal. “The red rocks, blue sky, clouds, stars, spiritual energy and colors of the high desert make Arizona relaxing, spiritual and enchanting,” Weinman says. “This area is perfect for living outdoors, with a number of hiking trails nearby.” She goes on to advise homeowners and visitors alike to slow down, get in sync with the pace of the area and allow negative energy to melt away. A hot spot for second homes within the country, the region offers the firm a unique market in which to thrive. “We work almost exclusively on second homes,” Weinman says. “Until the northern area was accessible via highways, the homes were small. The recent innovations in materials like glazing, rock veneer and lighting products have contributed to a new open and airy look, with high ceilings, big views and incredible light.” 1 2

t Wiseman and Gale Interiors, the approach to design is informed by a foundation in Southwest-style principles: commanding scale, luxury fabrics, bold colors, interesting compositions, subtle details and an emphasis on timeless beauty. Established in 1965 by George Wiseman and Anne Gale, the company today boasts nine seasoned designers led by principals Scott Burdick, Patty Burdick, Holly Ogden and Jana Parker Lee. Together, they form a collective of professionals who are imaginative, influenced by the American Southwest and believe in great design. Thus, it comes as little surprise to learn that the firm calls Scottsdale its home, and Northern Arizona one of its favorite locales in which to design. “While we are based in Scottsdale, we are set up to accommodate out-oftown projects and have long-standing relationships and resources throughout the state,” Scott says. “Wiseman and Gale has done projects for a large number of clients in the Northern Arizona developments over the past 50 years, and that gives us an edge. We know the clientele, the architecture and how to create homes that reflect the lifestyle.” Working primarily on second homes in communities like Forest Highlands and White Mountain Country Club, the Wiseman and Gale team crafts getaways that speak to the unique, picturesque lifestyle the area offers.

With a constantly changing roofline and alternating materials on different areas of the house—some stone, some stucco—a new Phoenix home looks as though it has sprawled outward over many generations. Reclaimed building materials impart a sense of age and authenticity.
T
he contemporary ease of being able to travel and live anywhere in the world, combined with our overscheduled lives, often scatters families, making coming together—over dinner, a hike or just a board game—progressively harder. A Midwestern couple who decided to build a sprawling second home in Phoenix decided this would not be their own family’s reality. “They wanted a place where they could gather with their children and grandchildren,” says interior designer Lissa Lee Hickman. To make the residence both intriguing and relaxing, “the homeowners expressed a desire for a French Provincial feel that was rustic but refined,” Hickman says. The community’s design guidelines already skewed toward historic styles, says residential designer Gary Wyant, who looked to architecture examples in the rural Mediterranean for inspiration. “Homes there have been in families for generations,” he explains. “They would start with one central building and add onto it over many years as families grew.” For Wyant, this dictated multiple clay tile rooflines and alternating wings of stucco and stone to convey an organic evolution. To avoid the perception of a new home, the design team gave the residence patina, liberally deploying reclaimed materials inside and outside. Salvaged bricks, antique white-oak floors, European limestone and old fireplaces imported from France were sourced locally. The team even flew to Idaho to handpick the repurposed barn wood beams used throughout. The old-world authenticity and materials, however, had to adapt to the family’s modern lifestyle. “Proportions of rooms are generous but comfortable rather than grand, and we used all-natural materials throughout,” Wyant says. And for large gatherings, the need for privacy was kept in mind. “Secondary bedrooms were designed with en-suite baths and separate living areas,” the residential designer says. “We created lots of cool spaces. There’s a casita that’s separate, a ramada with a barbeque, decks on the upper floors and patios all around the house.”

Other modern updates fell to Scott Edwards, who handled the construction. “We introduced a lot of new technology,” he says. “The HVAC system is one of the most advanced we’ve ever used. But aesthetically, the house had to look like it’s been there hundreds of years.” Case in point: A ubiquity of Arizona fieldstone known as DC Cobble was used for both interior and exterior application. Rather than stacked whole, the stones were cut into about 1½-inch slices. “We had to constantly monitor it so the size and color of the stones had the variety Gary intended,” Edwards says. “We also hand-broadcast a mix of sand and gravel into the grout to make it appear the way it would have years ago.” Outwardly the structure appears solid, yet the deceptively lighter material reduced the size of structural beams required to carry the weight. Another tricky feat, Edwards adds, was executing the enormous spiral entry stair. The carriage was fabricated in Texas and reassembled on-site. “Coordinating the way the iron banister, the reclaimed French white-oak treads and the rift-cut European oak panels on the sides came together required craftsmanship,” he says. The entry hall unquestionably makes a statement, Hickman says, but it does so in a calm way: The space is outfitted with limestone that was honed instead of polished, an iron chandelier rather than a crystal one and a vaulted ceiling crafted from brick, not plaster. As a result, “the room’s natural materials and finishes soften the space,” she says. Adding to the feeling is the fact that the entry hall opens into the great room, which is swathed in more prosaic fieldstone. Everywhere, the juxtaposition of rustic finishes and high-toned accents strikes a skillful equilibrium between welcomingly casual and sophisticated. In the great room, the tailored pleats of a sofa and its patterned blue Fortuny toss pillows fit right in. “The clients love blue,” Hickman says. “So we used different shades throughout the house—royal blue, navy blue, powder blue.” As for the furnishings, “many

of them are reproduction antique, which feels timeless,” the interior designer says. “Real antiques usually require rebuilding, and they’re not as durable for young children or grandchildren.” One place Hickman upped the ante is the master suite, where “we used a little more polish,” she says. Here, the clients asked for a cream-and-gold color scheme, which the interior designer carried out with her signature poise. Silk rugs “promote softness and texture on top of wood floors,” she notes. Antiqued French bombé-style tables sit bedside, and the master bath boasts not one but two crystal chandeliers. The space’s Calacatta Gold marble surfaces are honed instead of polished, and the floor is herringbone oak with a simple oil finish. Outside, landscape architect Jeff Berghoff complemented the architecture with hardscaping, drives, paths and walkways, a pool, a spa, a firepit and fountains. “The landscape was designed around the home’s panoramic views of the city lights, so we were strategic in placing large trees to block neighboring houses but frame the city lights,” he explains. “The main courtyard areas of the home have more of a Mediterranean feel, with drifts of rosemary, lavender, white iceberg roses, dwarf olive shrubs and a rose cutting garden.” From the expansive grounds to the comfortable spaces for gathering, “this home is designed for family and entertaining,” Wyant says. And indeed, that is just what the residents use their home for, bringing together their children and grandchildren for special occasions and new memories. “Come holiday time, every room in the house is full,” Hickman says.

s the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. At least, that’s been Kim Alber’s experience. After buying a ranch house on a gorgeous 1-acre lot in Paradise Valley, the mortage broker lived in the dated residence for four years before she hired architect Michael Groves to give the home a new lease on life. “The project began as a simple remodel,” he says, “but we ended up rebuilding the entire house.” The structure, Groves explains, didn’t suit its surroundings, which include panoramic vistas of Camelback Mountain. “It was not a great house,” he says. “It was very dark and cut up; the spaces didn’t work well.” As the gutted house was rebuilt, the changes the architect made—both practical and
LX_AZ40_HOM_ConstructionZone_14_.indd 232
aesthetic—gave it a stunning new look. Small windows, for instance, were replaced with floor-to-ceiling walls that usher in the sun as well as those beautiful views. Maximizing interior site lines, however, was also key. “It’s not only about the views outside,” Groves says. “Making connections through the house was just as important as making views to the mountains and desert.” Striking a balance between open-plan and private spaces required creative thinking. For the office, for example, Kim wanted a space that was at once set off and open to the light. Originally, she suggested glass walls, “but we thought it would look like an aquarium,” says Groves, whose partner, architect Andy Byrnes, acted as the builder. Instead, he came up with a win-win solution: a powder-coated steel screen

Opposite: At the hands of architect Michael Groves, Kim Alber’s house in Paradise Valley was adapted to the surrounding desert and redesigned with a modernist look. As shown in the living room, many of the exterior walls were replaced with glazing, allowing clear site lines throughout. Below: To reflect the Arizona heat, Groves chose white stucco by Star Plastering Inc. for the exterior façade. The zinc roof is by Metal Works Inc. “The home’s finishes, light and views present a good solution for how to live in the desert,” the architect says.

with a water-jet-cut pattern that separates the room from its surrounding areas. “She can still see through the screen, so she’s connected to the other spaces in the house,” the architect says. “And it puts a lovely sculptural element into the room.” Glossy white, the crisp and clean design mimics cut-out paper chains. Serene white walls throughout allow vistas to shine while also creating a quiet gallery-like backdrop for Kim’s furnishings and art. While keeping the palette pale, Groves found other ways to add interest. “Where it mattered is where we tried to inject more luxurious surfaces,” he says. Case in point: The kitchen backsplash consists of allwhite tiles with a three-dimensional geometric design.
LX_AZ40_HOM_ConstructionZone_14_.indd 234
“Initially, we were leaning toward something a little cleaner and more straightforward,” the architect recalls. “Then Kim chose a tile with texture to it. But it was expensive—and, frankly, I didn’t love it.” So Groves set to work masterminding an original tile design that he also decided to use for the master bathroom tub and a living room chimneypiece. Although the pattern has a midcentury vibe, “it harkens back to the decorative tile you might see on a more traditional fireplace,” Groves says. “I think it turned out very elegantly.” Kim’s furnishings and objects stood up to the new home design, so Groves and his team, including designer Jessica Ruiz, found unique ways to show them off. A bespoke

For a sculptural effect, landscape architect Stephen Bardorf created a linear composition of cardon cacti just outside the dining area, which looks out to the front entryway path.

The gray Daltile flooring serves multiple purposes: It offers a contrast to the white walls, helps combat desert heat and delineates distinct rooms in the largely open-plan layout.

cubical shelving unit that holds the television in the living room, for instance, wraps into the hallway that leads to the guest rooms, where it surrounds the doorways to the Jackand-Jill bedrooms. “We wanted a place for Kim’s objects so she could live with them every day,” the architect says. The only new furnishings in the entire house are the sculptural wooden stools in the posh white kitchen, where most of the cabinetry and appliances have been tucked away in an out-of-sight butler’s pantry to let the beautiful white backsplash shine. “I wanted it to be very minimalistic,” Kim explains. “I have a glamorous kitchen and a hidden kitchen—one where all the things you don’t want to see are out of sight.” Outside, Groves chose—what else?—white for the stucco cladding on the façade. “It’s a reaction to living in the desert,” he says. “It’s very reflective, and it helps with the heat.” Steel trellises shade the glass-enclosed dining area, where a grid of columnar cacti, composed by landscape

architect Stephen Bardorf, adds privacy without closing off the view. Beyond the house, geometric plantings yield to a more native landscape with a variety of shrubs and majestic Chilean Mesquite trees. The rear gardens are accessible from the lofty great room, which has a clear view of Camelback Mountain. The space is connected to a generous patio, where Kim easily accommodated nearly 100 guests for a wedding she hosted for dear friends. “When we have a party, it’s always at my house,” the homeowner says. “You name a theme, and it’s probably happened.” For a more private experience, there’s also an intimate courtyard off the master suite. This is where Kim can often be found entertaining friends, relaxing with a glass of wine after a long day in the office or planning her next hike on Camelback Mountain. “This house went from a typical ranch to an architectural gem,” she says. “I feel humbled that I was part of it.”
To create an office that was private yet still allowed in natural light and limited views, Groves enclosed the room with walls made of powdercoated steel with a water-jet-cut pattern designed and built by The Construction Zone. Hélène Aumont’s Negresco Desk occupies the space.

What was once a water feature is now a mod fire pit in an outdoor patio, which is defined by an existing courtyard wall. Bardorf selected a range of drought-tolerant plants for the area, including a saguaro, medicinal aloe and Texas sage. The angle of the wooden roof protects the interior from the midday sun and shades the patio all day long.

BENEATH THE SURFACE IN HIS BOLD, LAYERED WORKS, PHOENIX ARTIST ERIK GONZALES EXCAVATES ABSTRACT AND NATURAL FORMS. WRITTEN BY TANYA WARD GOODMAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDON SULLIVAN

Artist Erik Gonzales’ Phoenix studio is filled with mixed-media canvases in various stages. His process involves layering materials, such as paint mixed with ground marble, then scraping down or incising the surfaces with customized tools to reveal the base coat.

omentum. It’s a word that comes up often in conversation with Phoenix artist Erik Gonzales. “I’m a talker,” he admits, and his enthusiasm burns a jagged line through history, philosophy, psychology, travel and his roles as husband and father. This collage of influences is mirrored in his creative process: Using marble dust, clays, pigmented plaster and acrylics, Gonzales builds a surface and then subjects it to near excavation as he scrapes, carves and incises the layers. The end result is ageless—part Roman fresco, part primeval seabed. Abstract in nature, these canvases are often inscribed with imagery grounded in the world; leaves, fossil shapes and shells are among the artist’s favorites. “I’m fascinated by prehistoric plants and early cephalopods,” Gonzales says. “The form is an excuse for an idea. I might begin with an image of a squid, but when I’m finished it’s not a squid but, instead, the story of evolution. The finished work is the result of layering, decay and scraping. In this way, the process illuminates the larger narrative.” luxesource.com / 247

“I IMAGINE I’M CREATING A SMALL WINDOW THROUGH WHICH TO VIEW SOMETHING THAT WILL CONTINUE INFINITELY.”
LX_AZ40_SM_Gonzales.indd 249
Based in Arizona, with summers in Catalonia, Gonzales considers himself a “desert dweller” but dodges the idea of being a regional artist. “The turquoise blue I use is a nod to the sea, not the stone,” he laughs. As fate would have it, his long-coveted 1960 Al Beadle home in Phoenix came with an artist’s studio, which Gonzales gutted and framed with “easel walls.” These moveable, braced sheets of plywood allow the artist to stretch large canvases at a slight angle. “Sometimes I have to work on the floor, kneeling on the painting,” he says. “It’s less intimidating that way, and I have space for momentum.” The evidence of this physical engagement builds like a primordial crust on every surface, and Gonzales often uses the residue of earlier work to influence his latest creation, positioning a canvas over the dried pigment to create a rubbing. In addition to large metal scrapers, he creates his work using specialized implements made by his neighbor, a former engineer. “He
finds vintage wooden-handled tools from the 1940s and custom-grinds the tips,” the artist says. Keeping history alive in every aspect of Gonzales’ work is a common thread, but he isn’t hesitant about moving toward the future. Influenced by the blue of the Mediterranean and the exuberance of his 7-year-old son’s art, he continues to expand his artistic vocabulary. His latest work incorporates more color and lessrecognizable imagery. The addition of acrylic and polymer binds the natural minerals and creates a hard surface Gonzalez jokingly refers to as “Corian.” Drawing inspiration from a changing world, Gonzales—who credits Michael Costello at Costello Childs Gallery for his ongoing support of his own transformative process—can’t help but ponder on a larger scale. “When I see an artifact in a museum, I always think about what else is out there,” he says. “What’s missing? In my own work, I imagine I’m creating a small window through which to view something that will continue infinitely.”

O
ur houses really take the shape of our clients,” architect Mark Candelaria says of the projects his firm designs. That statement couldn’t be truer for a couple whose home he recently completed in Paradise Valley. The husband and wife, longtime Valley of the Sun residents, were looking to downsize and build a new home that matched their current phase of life. They spent years looking for the right lot when they came across the perfect one, situated on a hillside overlooking a private golf course and within walking distance of the neighborhood’s clubhouse. Best of all, the site offered idyllic southerly exposures and extraordinary views of Camelback Mountain. The couple had developed a definite idea of what they wanted for their new home. In particular, they desired a residence that met their needs as grandparents, golfers and avid cooks. “They were wonderful clients,” Candelaria says. “They jumped right into the process and made their wishes clear.” In addition to satisfying the homeowners’ requests,
LX_AZ40_HOM_Candelaria_12.indd 252
the architect and his colleague, Jeff Kramer, recognized the importance of the mountain view, something they strove to capture through nearly every window in the house. The couple happily followed Candelaria’s lead in pulling together the 6,000-square-foot layout. “Over the course of a few meetings, Mark formulated a floor plan using puzzle-like pieces,” the wife says. “It was fun!” That enthusiasm bubbled throughout the course of the project, which took two and a half years and reunited Candelaria with builder John Schultz, interior designer Donna Vallone and landscape architect Jeff Berghoff. As some of the most prominent Scottsdale firms, they had all worked with each other at one point or another, making this design plan particularly synergetic. The resulting house, which Candelaria describes as “indoor-outdoor contemporary—but warm and cozy,” works exactly to the couple’s needs. It is built around the kitchen, which is as comfortable for two as it is for 10. A hub of the house, the space is outfitted with top-of-the-line
On a hillside in Paradise Valley, architect Mark Candelaria melded European and Southwestern influences to create a bespoke home for longtime Phoenix-area residents. Custom iron lanterns from Sun Lighting and antique pots with Mediterranean plantings flank a glazed entry from Sonoran Doors.

equipment and was designed to be a welcoming place for both cooking and casual dining. A sizeable table and island take center stage, illuminated from above by a large skylight. “It was added to bring in natural light, because the patio to the south cuts out a lot,” Candelaria notes. Connected to the kitchen via a butler’s pantry is the more formal dining room, which features a distinctive crossvaulted ceiling. “There are six surfaces to a room, yet the ceiling is often overlooked,” the architect points out. “This room is heaven.” When it came to the interior design, the homeowners trusted their instincts and knew Vallone, whom they had met through mutual friends, was the right choice. “I love going outside the box, and the fact that Donna can do it so easily made us a perfect match,” the wife says. Likewise, the interior designer, who worked closely with associate Niki Saulino, relished the opportunity “to collaborate with clients who like a little eclecticism,” she says. “This house is upbeat.” Historical elements such as Canadian reclaimed-wood beams and French limestone floors mix with contemporary components like the glass wine cabinets that border the dining room, altogether creating a style Vallone considers transitional. Playful elements, such as the chinoiserie tiger

print on a living room chair and a Hunt Slonem bunny painting, add personality and inject a youthful feel for younger visitors. In a garden-themed guest room designed with the couple’s granddaughters in mind, a cheerful floral fabric melds with colorful paintings of little birds. “Everything felt serendipitous,” Vallone says. The serendipity continues outside, where the owners gave Berghoff—whom they have worked with before— free reign to devise a lush Mediterranean-style landscape that provided plenty of greenery while respecting the surrounding environment. “It’s a phenomenal lot,” Berghoff says. “We created a garden feel with the lawn and its rose beds, jasmine and lavender while restoring the adjacent desert to its full glory to meet the constraints of the area.” The most verdant spaces abut the house, with terraces leading to a fire pit and to hidden areas like vegetable and
cutting gardens. “Jeff mixed European and Southwestern concepts, and the result is beautiful,” the wife says. An indoor potting shed offers year-round puttering, and the landscape architect, who often joined in design meetings with Vallone, played off the residence’s rustic stone exterior by sourcing olive pots from France as well as a few new pieces that lend a sense of authenticity. Yet perhaps the most authentic part of the project is the satisfaction the owners have living in the residence. Whether the couple are welcoming family members, cooking in their new kitchen or wrapping up a round on the fairway, they feel right at home thanks to their design team. “Mark was so creative and bursting with amazing ideas, and Jeff was one of the most methodical and brightest people we had ever met,” the wife says. “They were an architectural dream come true.”
The homeowners wanted maximum natural light in the kitchen, a request Candelaria met with a skylight from Kalwall and an expansive window from Riviera Bronze in Ventura, California. The cabinetry is by Desert Cove Woodworks, with marble countertops from Arizona Tile and a zinc island top from Grayleaf Studio. The French oak floors are from Exquisite Surfaces in Los Angeles.

VIVA HAVANA! WHILE DECADES HAVE PASSED SINCE CUBA’S INITIAL TOURISM HEYDAY, THE TIMEWORN YET ELEGANT NATION—STILL RIFE WITH CULTURAL AND EXOTIC ALLURE— IS ONCE AGAIN MAKING WAVES AS THE TOP DESTINATION ON EVERYONE’S TRAVEL LIST. BEREFT OF MODERN INTRUSION, THE COUNTRY’S CAPITAL CITY HAS UNDERGONE LITTLE CHANGE IN EITHER ATMOSPHERE OR ARCHITECTURE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, AND THE WAY THAT IT CAPTURES A MOMENT IN TIME BRINGS ABOUT A FASCINATING SENSE OF BEAUTY AND INTRIGUE. THE ITEMS FOUND ON THIS PAGE CELEBRATE THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND TROPICAL SETTING OF THIS REINVIGORATED ISLAND. Clockwise from top right: Charlotte / $6.90 per tile / cementtileshop.com.
