POP OF COLOR

Micah Tipler, founder of TIPLER Design, is a true believer in embracing color in the kitchen. With DacorMatch, the innovative color system introduced by leading luxury appliance brand, Dacor, you can personalize your appliances in any pantone imaginable. Show your true colors. All of them.

Micah Tipler PRINCIPAL, TIPLER DESIGN Houston, TX

H

ouston based interior designer and Dacor Design Council member, Micah Tipler, is a force in the design, architecture, procurement, showroom, development, and build industries. Her “outside of the box approach has earned her status as an industry leader, and she is applauded for the design risks she takes, including her creative use of color in kitchen projects.

“What excites my design team and our clients about DacorMatch is the capability to truly customize something.” DacorMatch allows designers and their clients to customize the kitchen like never before. “Everyone uses their kitchen in a slightly different way. Being able to tailor it to fit all of our clients’ needs has become critical to the design process,” Tipler says. The DacorMatch Color System makes it possible to paint Heritage wall ovens and ranges in any color on the spectrum. “We’ve done ranges in subdued colors, from pearl white to navy blue. But we’ve also designed fun ovens in teal, fuchsia and orange, making something really unique and special,” she shares. The process is simple. By providing Dacor with your selected color swatch, the team will match it exactly, delivering a custom appliance fit to your taste. Tipler shares from experience: “Once we’ve established a color palette for a particular project, we determine an accent color that speaks to the client. Then, we provide Dacor with a pantone number, and the team creates a sample to send us for approval. It’s been a match every time.” In addition, Dacor offers seven standard colors to choose from. “DacorMatch is truly limitless, which as a designer, is hugely exciting,” Tipler says. “Being able to specify a personalized appliance for our clients that we know they’ll enjoy with their families for years is game-changing.” From start to finish, DacorMatch appliances take six to seven weeks. Warming Drawer in DacorMatch upon special request only.

ON THE COVER: Simplicity was a key factor in the design of this Paradise Valley house created by designer Dana Lyon for her and her husband. For the faรงade, architect Matthew Thomas focused on the contrast between the crisp, white stucco and the black roof and window frames, which is offset by the surrounding landscape by Jeremy McVicars. EDITOR’S LETTER

Designers are increasingly seeking out bespoke pieces for their clients, such as this bold wall treatment by MJ Atelier (right).

Welcome to our annual Luxury Report issue dedicated to luxury in all its forms and iterations. To prepare for this issue, our editors reached out to designer-friends to ask, “How do you define luxury?” It’s interesting to read their responses. Certainly, it’s not about extravagance or price. For many, it’s about comfort, calm and a sense of peace in an otherwise noisy and somewhat chaotic world. Luxury is most definitely about anything that is made with great care and an attention to detail. I think it’s also about originality, which seems to be rarer to find these days. Most anything that’s elusive or slightly out of reach can be perceived as luxurious. Of course, time is the ultimate luxury: The idea of waiting for something to be made, (while we’re all programmed for instant gratification these days) seems sumptuous. I can relate to Ken Fulk’s response—that luxury is about the little things, like the scent of fresh-clipped flowers or an unplanned Sunday spent on the sofa. Can’t count how many weekends I’ve fallen into a nap on my red English roll arm, with a paperback novel atop my lap and my two Shih Tzu’s curled up beside me. Heaven!

Fashion designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” With customization on the rise, many designers could apply the sentiment to homes outfitted with bespoke elements—including Achille Salvagni, principal of his eponymous international architectural and design practice. “In the last 10 years, my clientele has increasingly sought out homes that are oneof-a-kind,” he says. “In many ways, looking for a designer is like looking for a tailor that can make a dress that fits your body perfectly.” He cites a client who recently hired him to create a highly custom home in Mumbai, India. “She wanted a living room that was a portrait of her family,” he explains. “After interviewing

the family members, I created furniture that represents the qualities of each. A sofa embodies the personality of the father, the table is inspired by the daughter—together, all the furniture tells this family’s story.” Maria Apelo Cruz, who co-founded the decorative arts studio MJ Atelier with her husband Mike Jovanovic, also sees an increase in customers seeking one-off wallcoverings, furnishings and lighting. “We are riding the wave of designers who want to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Today’s clients are looking for conversation pieces that no one else has.” An example is the wallcovering they made for an inveterate video gamer that includes symbology from classics including Zelda, Pac-Man and Pokémon.

Cruz says that bringing a designer’s creations to life requires finding the right craftspeople, and that’s challenging. “Many aspects of quality craftsmanship take a lifetime to master—so by the time you’ve perfected your trade, it’s time to retire,” she says. “Traditionally, a lot of information was passed down through families, but these days, some of the offspring of contemporary craftspeople are pursuing other things.” To keep those skills alive, she and her husband have started

personal aspect that makes the effort and expenditure worth it. The company offers their products in bespoke sizes, colors and fabrics. “Every person has a different idea about what makes the perfect design elements. What could be better than picking your own fabrics in the color combination to make something just for you? Customization is the ultimate expression of luxury.”

Custom designs take the form of personalized wall treatments, such as the one shown on the previous page by MJ Atelier. Other examples include Hammerton Custom’s oneof-a-kind lighting fixtures (top, right); interior furnishings by Achille Salvagni (center); and personalized linens by Matouk (below, left).

a teaching guild—and to the couple’s delight, they are discovering an eager audience. “The stereotype of a millennial is a person staring at a computer screen,” Cruz says. “But we’ve found many young people who want to learn how to paint, draw and gild.” That’s not to say there’s no place for computer screens in today’s customization climate. In fact, technology is facilitating even higher levels of tailored details. “These days, we have old-world techniques and modern tools living together—you’ll find an anvil next to computer-driven cutting equipment,” says Paul Verbecky, the general manager at Hammerton Custom. “Computer modeling is enabling us to do things we couldn’t have imagined in the past—we recently created a model showing a 6,000-pound fixture that’s 25 feet at its widest point. It’s the easiest and fastest way to show how a piece like that would look in a space.” But custom design takes longer and is more expensive to produce—so why are more consumers seeking it out? George Matouk, Jr., CEO and president of the linen company that bears his family’s name, believes it’s the

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN TEAMS UP WITH PERENNIALS TO CREATE FABRICS AND RUGS THAT WORK INDOORS AND OUT. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON

Timothy Corrigan is a self-proclaimed “Perennials freak.” With the debut of his new seven-fabric, three-rug collection, Perennials by Timothy Corrigan, the celebrated designer has put his own stamp on the high-performance fabric company’s “rugged yet beautiful” ideology. Luxe got the scoop on this exciting collaboration and why indoor-outdoor textiles are the future of design. You are crazy about high-performance fabrics. I’ve been using performance textiles for years— back when they were still ugly striped canvases! I realized early on, if you don’t have to worry about how you’re living in a house then it makes such a difference. I know some people who won’t let anyone drink red wine in their home, and I hate everything about that! When it is a “look but don’t touch” zone, then you’re not comfortable, your family isn’t comfortable and your guests aren’t comfortable. And the appeal of Perennials? It’s a gamechanger. Not all performance fabrics are created equal, and Perennials is kind of fanatical with how its fabrics perform. Also, the rugs feel like the

finest wool or silk. The company’s beautiful, soft carpet is stain-proof, which is exactly what people want. Customers want beauty and practicality. What was the spark for your collection? I have offices in Paris and Los Angeles, so my aesthetic is very much European-inspired, but through a casual California filter. In this collection there’s a fabric that is almost like an Italian tapestry, which is called Go for Baroque. There are also chinoiserie options, one which is inspired by a Chinese wallpaper and another that is reminiscent of an 18th-century interpretation of a French chinoiserie. You skew traditional, while Perennials leans contemporary. This was a real leap for Perennials. Ann Sutherland, who started the company, isn’t naturally drawn to the warmer colors and classical styles that I use but she said, “That’s why we need you!” I told her, “This is not going to be in your comfort zone. Be ready for it.” What’s in the crystal ball for performance fabrics? It’s important to see these fabrics as

“Clients want beauty and practicality,” says designer Timothy Corrigan of his latest performance fabric and rug collection with Perennials.

something to be used indoors and figuring out how more products can be performance based. We’ll also see an expansion into materials like wood finishes with marine varnish so people don’t have to worry about putting down a glass. The future of design is influenced by consumers who are not willing to make the trade-off between performance and beauty.

THE LATEST TABLETOP FINDS ADD A TOUCH OF ARTFUL LIVING TO THE EVERYDAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

This season’s spirited tabletop selections are making it easy to transform everyday place settings into luxurious works of art. Each piece offers a creative expression while also evoking a bold sense of time and place. Consider Buccellati’s Doge collection, which inspirits its Italian craftmanship and pays homage to the splendors of Venetian art with hand-hammered and chiseled silver enhanced with malachite, lapis and red jasper. Closer to home, Michelle Blade looked to her Pacific Northwestern roots for her ceramic Garden Series. Molly Hatch’s Always Collection brings a modern and playful twist to a traditional 18th-century European surface pattern, and Luke Edward Hall’s collaboration with Richard Ginori is based on his love of Greco-Roman mythology. And finally, James Peter Henry morphed his public art installation at TableArt into a limited-edition collection that celebrates “the complexity of a human journey in a possible fourth-dimensional state.”

MEET the MAKER SEAN HUNTER

Midtown Artisans operates under the credo, “Making things that last.” From the time the Tucson venture was founded by Andy Littleton, lead craftsman Sean Hunter has created tables, benches, sinks and stools to furnish private and retail spaces. “Every project is a new challenge,” says Hunter. “There’s never a dull moment. The opportunity to design and fabricate custom furniture that hundreds, maybe even thousands, of people will interact with on a given day is very gratifying. I’m pretty sentimental, so Presta, which was my fi rst major commercial opportunity to design and build a space from a blank slate, is still my favorite project to date.” Mesa, the team’s small retail space at the Mercado San Agustin Annex just west of downtown Tucson, carries a selection of small home goods made with the same quality of materials and craftsmanship. Cutting boards, prickly hex tile and concrete cacti share the space with one-off furniture pieces. On the horizon is a new furniture line in development and expansion of their market goods. “Our goal is to provide a wider range of quality home goods with the option of supplementing in custom work,” says Hunter. Look for the work of Sean and Midtown Artisans at Cultivate Tucson, a biannual pop-up market showcasing the best of local makers. “It’s a great community event here in Tucson hosted by amazing people,” says Littleton. midtownartisans.com

OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS

Bigger and better are the buzzwords for a trio of Scottsdale showrooms that have expanded to offer more experiential shopping spaces. At Town (2716 N. 68th St., Ste 2), Adam Schiff has created a showroom with the feel of an everchanging gallery, with pieces arranged as well-curated art, making way for rotating artists’ works and shows. Top brands like Lutron, Crestron and Hunter Douglas are part of more than 60 installations at Modern Shade (17255 82nd St., Ste. 115) that use simulated heat and lighting windows to choose the best interior or exterior shade for the job in a true-to-life setting (below). Jamilyn Fournier is expanding her jewel box of a luxury shop and showroom, The Collector’s House (8787 N. Scottsdale Road, #208) to bring even more artistry into the homes of her clients. Hers is now the U.S. flagship boutique for the Alfonso Marina line, mixing ebanista heritage with modern design.

JOINT ADVENTURE MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS WRITTEN BY NINA KORMAN

How does 30 feel? MG: Weird and interesting and great. We just hired a CEO, Allison O’Connor, to spearhead things, nurture our team and position us for even bigger and better growth in the future. Greatest lesson learned while in business? BW: Follow your gut. If you don’t have that really deep feeling about something, it may not be quite perfect. So many people let others get in their minds or talk them out of stuff, then things go kind of haywire. Proudest accomplishment as a company? BW: Day care. We started it 22 years ago. Since then we’ve had about 70 kids there all the time. You get to see them grow up. What’s next? MG: A whole new take on leather club chairs in exciting colors, like leaf green, deep red and peacock blue (shown). Some of the silhouettes are classic modern while others have a very new traditional look. 116 / LUXESOURCE.COM

SAVE THE DATE TUCSON MODERNISM WEEK

Running October 5-13, The Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation presents a series of programs, film, lectures and events that detail and celebrate “Sonoran Modern.” That’s the term that has come to define the midcentury boom in the area’s architecture, the hallmarks of which are the use of regional materials, adaptation to the desert climate, clean, simple lines and an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living. Lectures, film, exhibits, tours and stylish cocktail parties are on the docket for the week, which concludes with the ever-popular vintage trailer exhibition. preservetucson.org/modernism-week

Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, owners of the ultra-successful furniture company that bears their name, are in a car, speeding through rural North Carolina on a weekday morning. Moving forward quickly is an apt metaphor for their business, which is now celebrating its 30 th anniversary. Gold and Williams initially founded a factory in Taylorsville to ensure superior, American-made products, then proceeded to take care of their now 900-plus employees by establishing on-site day care, a gym, a health center and a café. Their progressive policies rocked the furniture industry, and their products—vintage-style leather club chairs and seating slipcovered in casual fabrics—did too. The duo spoke with Luxe about their time in the industry. mgbwhome.com

ITINERARY JAIMEE ROSE

Jaimee Rose has been making spaces beautiful since she was young, when she used to work alongside her decorator mother. As an adult, she wedged interior design work into her busy schedule as a journalist, but eventually she decided to make design her full-time gig, telling stories with wallpaper, fabric and furnishings instead of words. Rose believes good design can actually help people live better, and that attention to detail is what results in a comfortable, cohesive end product. She’s putting the finishing touches on Vibrant Skin Bar, slated to open this fall in Phoenix’s Arcadia neighborhood where she lives with her husband, Tyson. The project, with Brimley Development, has lively interiors sure to be “a blast of fun and an Instagram hit.” Her Arizona favorites are as stylish and well appointed as her designs. jaimeerose.com

“With the Presrv™ Wine and Beverage Coolers, we integrated some of the most sought-after technological elements and combined them with eye-catching aesthetics.”

discoverzephyr

A seasoned entertainer’s kitchen is no longer complete without a Presrv™ Cooler. Created by wine preservation and ventilation pioneer Zephyr, the Presrv Wine and Beverage Coolers are posh and high-performance refrigeration units complete with Full-Extension Wood Racks, Active Cooling Technology, and two distinct temperature zones. Ideal for those who appreciate everything from red and white wines, craft beer and perfectly chilled sodas, the Beverage Cooler dips down to a frigid 34 °F—an ideal temperature for storing beer and other beverages that taste best at their frostiest. The Presrv Cooler works in nearly any space; its design is centered on providing solutions for the way people live and where they spend their time in the home. In an open kitchen, a Presrv Wine Cooler ensures that favorite bottles of wine are easily accessible when entertaining guests. And in game rooms, large walk-in closets or dens, a Beverage Cooler is an ideal option to store favorite drinks, so they are on hand and chilled to perfection.

Luke Siow, Zephyr President

THE RIGHT MIX Integrating mixed metallics throughout the home continues to dominate design trends. A sleek alternative to stainless steel, the titanium-coated black stainless steel Presrv Coolers give a sophisticated edge to wine storage. Zephyr’s signature black stainless steel finish is available on the Dual Zone Wine and the Single Zone Beverage Coolers.

ARCHITECTS

ERIK PETERSON + GENE KNIAZ PHX Architecture 480.477.1111 phxarch phxarch.com The award-winning designs of PHX Architecture are the result of a true team effort. Whether helping with site selection, architectural design and interiors or space planning, president Erik Peterson and principal Gene Kniaz have their hands in the process. While Peterson recognized his artistic leanings early on, Kniaz discovered his love for design later in his college years. Both, however, share an appreciation for local materials and craftsmen, whose work is often reflected in their luxury residences, golf clubhouses, signature resorts and restaurants. Peterson originally founded the company in 2002 under Peterson Architecture, and in 2010, rebranded the firm PHX Architecture, expanding its project locations and staff. Today, Peterson and his team continue to deliver exceptional design with unparalleled client service, following three rules of design: keep it simple, no more than three materials, and always odds versus evens.

“ We always enjoy an element of surprise that the client doesn’t realize until they occupy the space.”

Share several social media accounts or hashtags you turn to for design and business inspiration. Erik: #modernarchitecture, #luxuryresort, #luxurylifestyle, @luxemagazine, @robbreport. Gene: @mcalpinehouse, @blakstadibiza, @rosetarlowmelrosehouse, @studioko, @gibsoncustom. Is there anyone you aspire to be like, in work and/or life? Erik: Warren Buffett; he is an amazing businessman, inspirational mentor and philanthropist. Gene: Dick Williams, who was the design director at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He was a great architect, an even greater educator, gifted author and humanist. I try to think of his example every day. If you weren’t in this profession, you’d be ... Erik: I would love to be a pilot or an astronaut. Gene: I’d like to write about politics, but I think my wife and daughter are relieved I’m an architect.

1

Share one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you. Erik: I am a model railroad junkie. I have an entire train set and love working with it. Gene: I like progressive heavy metal—from England, Sweden, and lately, Poland. Describe your dream creative project. Erik: My dream is to one day design an opera house. Gene: I’d love to renovate the Arizona Inn or Hacienda Del Sol in Tucson, or do a great residential development down there.

1. Walking through this Mediterranean yet modern estate, a one-of-a-kind relationship between the indoor and outdoor spaces is revealed. Designed with the homeowners’ enjoyment in mind, the living spaces blend traditional and contemporary elements. 2. This 9,901-square-foot, two-story home is a true entertainer’s paradise. Highlights of its design include a man cave with a golf simulator and bar with access to a secret garage and wine room. 3. Peterson, left, and Kniaz, right, in PHX’s Scottsdale work space. 2

A Dynamic Real Estate Duo Raul Siqueiros and Jack Luciano share an in-depth knowledge of the luxury real estate market and a camaraderie that transcends day-to-day challenges to empower one another and their clients. As managing partners of The Agency Arizona, Raul and Jack work as a team to provide unparalleled, conciergestyle services, which include maintaining consistent communication with their clients—delivering good, bad or no news in a timely manner—and negotiating every deal with confidence. “We do what it takes to make our clients happy, while adhering to our integrity,” Jack says. It comes as no surprise then, that much of their business is from referrals. INTO the BLUE ONCE OVERLOOKED KITCHEN STORAGE SPACES ARE REINVENTED WITH RICH, JUICY COLOR. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

“I love using bold color in a room that feels unexpected,” explains Houston-based designer Lauren Haskett of this sophisticated butler’s pantry scheme that packs a punch with its sensuous blue shade. Traditionally, the kitchen has been a neutral zone where clients steered clear of adventurous tones. Yet today designers are turning to bright and dramatic designs in the kitchen’s auxiliary spaces: Think glamorous and vivid gem tones in a prep kitchen, butler’s pantry or wet bar. These more modest areas are being transformed into rich jewel boxes—a surprising departure from what was once a purely functional room. As Haskett notes, “Color really sets the tone of the room.” So why not add some drama to peeling potatoes and storing spaghetti sauce?

PANTRY PERFECT LAUREN HASKETT

While using a strong color took some persuading (Black was the original pick!), designer Lauren Haskett always knew her client’s butler’s pantry needed something fresh. The trick was elevating the design of this space with polished surfaces and elegant details that were in keeping with the rest of this stately home near Fort Worth, Texas. houstoninteriordesign.co Tell us about the function of this space. I call this the butler’s pantry, but it really has a multitude of uses including acting as a connector between the main kitchen, media room and mudroom, so it gets used all the time. As the kitchen space only has one wall of cabinetry, this room doubles as a coffee bar, wet bar, charging station, storage area for china and catering kitchen. Several appliances, including a Perlick refrigerator, Scotsman ice machine and KitchenAid dishwasher, are also housed in the pantry.

A Native Trails sink and Kallista faucet sit in front of a large window that looks out onto the patio and pool. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls.

204 / luxesource.com

Is the same level of sophistication carried throughout the house? The overall aesthetic of the home is definitely on the formal side and even the spaces that are casual still have an elegance to them, so I wanted to make sure the butler’s pantry reflected how refined this residence is. I also wanted to inject a dose of glamour with this grand color.

photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.

The color is so striking. How did you select it? I’m so happy we went with Hague Blue because there is so much depth to it; it can go green, blue and gray all at the same time. However, what’s most important when working with a darker color in a space is to incorporate contrast, so it won’t ever feel like a cave. Here, we added lighter countertops, pale wallpaper, metallic hardware and glass-front cabinets that bounce light around.

OUR ANNUAL DEEP DIVE INTO REAL ESTATE AND THE SHEER LUXURY OF HIGH-RISE LIVING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

MOVING ON UP Over the last few years, more and more people have been gravitating toward cities and the vibrant lifestyle that high-rise living delivers. Young executives, international professionals, families and retired couples are looking for ease, convenience and walkability—museums, restaurants and schools at their doorstep—but all within the frame of luxury living. To meet the demand, developers are turning to the world’s most respected architects and designers to create residential buildings that meet every need, and quite a few whims. A latenight cognac and a game of billiards? A sunrise swim in the infinity pool overlooking the city? It’s all possible. And while the amenities are designed to feel resort-like, they are also intended to feel like home.

RISE

The Harrison, on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, was ahead of the curve when it devoted its penthouse floor not to the preeminent condo but to its residents’ pleasure—a democratizing move that new developments are following. There, designer Ken Fulk, who designed all of the property’s public spaces, created Uncle Harry’s, a green-lacquered lounge that lets everyone take in the 49th floor’s spectacular vistas. “With 180-degree views spanning from the ocean to the bay, we imagined this as the sky-high aerie of a bon vivant explorer that just happens to be your favorite uncle,” says Fulk. Accessed by a grand entry salon, the floor includes a dining room, pantry, fitness center and spa. It’s an homage to the city’s elegant and continental spirit, just with Fulk’s signature pizazz. theharrisonsf.com

The tabletops are banded with satin-brass trim and set on walnut bases. Lobby library at 277 Fifth Avenue “Our design reflects the energy and sensibility of NoMad,” says Jeffrey Beers of his vision for 277 Fifth Avenue. “It’s my favorite neighborhood in New York, so it was easy to be inspired by the area’s historical buildings and creative vibe.” Making a traditional statement in thoroughly modern style is the lobby library, one of the building’s most sophisticated amenities. 277fifth.com Why a library? In the building’s lobby entrance, we really wanted to make an instant “welcome home” statement. Describe the look. Handsome, sensible, tailored and timeless. Tell us about the features. If you look closely, you’ll see the library mimics the building’s exterior. It’s beautifully made with dramatic, double-height cases and incredible wood detailing. While we have an affection for designing bookcases (I’m an avid book collector), we prefer to collaborate with renowned publishers like Assouline to curate what goes onto the shelves.

HIGH SOCIETY

FOUR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS CHAT ABOUT LUXURY AMENITIES AND THE FUTURE OF HIGH-RISE LIVING.

CURT R. BAILEY

LEONARD STEINBERG

KEVIN BATCHELOR

BRIAN LEVITT

What trends are you seeing in the high-rise sector? Developers will increasingly cater to families who appreciate the benefits of urban living—a graciously designed residence that extends to worldclass amenities for all generations. Must-have amenity: Fitness centers. I want state-of-the-art equipment, first-class service, innovative programming, and well-designed spaces that offer communal cardio workouts to private Pilates sessions. relatedmidwest.com

Why is the high-rise market so hot? Time is the last luxury, and high-rise living delivers convenience. Elevating yourself above the city allows you to enjoy all its joys while separating yourself when it’s time to relax and unwind. Amenities on the horizon: Wind turbines on top, generating energy for the entire building and a landing pad for drone deliveries. Security will become much greater, too. compass.com

Who’s moving in? In the past decade, we have seen a downsizing trend amongst empty nesters, gypsy nesters and older millennials. What’s luring them? This demographic wants walkability and a 24-hour, lock-and-leave lifestyle. Everyone wants their own personal concierge to handle everything from dry cleaning and food deliveries to tickets to the opera. They’re looking for higher-quality, personalized butler-style services. You can’t beat the hyper-convenience. hines.com

What amenity is most important to you? Where we live has a profound effect on our well-being and I’m all for beautifully designed common spaces that encourage gathering. How do you see the high-rise lifestyle advancing? People choose condo living because they want to know their neighbors. There needs to be a renewed focus on creating memorable experiences that build a stronger connection between people, place and community. navareal.com

15 Hudson Yards, a collaboration between architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, who oversaw the interiors, has devoted its 51st floor to entertaining amenities that will thrill epicureans and oenophiles alike. Rockwell defined the kitchen with a monolithic stone island and opted for leather counter stools in shades of gray and green—all in keeping with the project’s focus on natural materials and interiors that are, “simultaneously calm and strong,” he says. Citywide Builders’ signature is the delivery of a complete package, which, when referring to its home remodeling projects, always includes the two most valued rooms in any renovation: the kitchen and bath. “From concept to completion, we have the expertise and ability to handle the entire process,” say owners Bill and Denise Dougherty, who work by one rule: The design must reflect the clients’ tastes and lifestyle. Beyond that, they say, there aren’t many rules that can’t be broken, adding that the most exciting designs are often those that challenge a rule successfully. In today’s kitchens, that translates to adding dark pops of color, handmade craft tiles or innovative technological touches that break the current mold. “Contemporary kitchens have evolved with our changing ideas of cooking; mainly who is doing it and why,” they say.

DETTAGLIO DO’S AND DON’TS Do insist on a kitchen island. It usually serves as the main open counter space and a gathering spot. If it blocks easy access from the sink to the refrigerator, consider adding another sink to the island. Don’t underestimate the hood. The cooktop is a strong focal spot. Even the most unadorned hoods should have some aesthetic. They can blend with the cabinetry or stand out as an accent. Do consider a kitchen pantry. Some have open shelves purely for function; many are decorated with baskets and storage accessories, and others serve as a second kitchen with countertops, cabinetry and even additional appliances and plumbing.

Don’t settle for average appliances and faucets. It’s important to have appliances that meet or exceed the caliber of your home. Even if they are not used often, they are a part of what establishes the quality of the kitchen.

dettagliodesign

Interior designer Jeni Robison wants to know nearly everything about how a client engages their spaces at home—especially the kitchen. “We learn how the homeowner cooks, cleans and entertains in the kitchen. We like to think through all of the details and address every nook and cranny to make it fully functioning for the homeowner,” she says. From simply unloading the dishwasher to hosting guests, activities must be thoroughly considered. Robison, who owns Dettaglio Interior Design, has mastered the art of concealing the essentials. “There are accessories in many forms that hide within cabinets and we address each option,” she notes. Microwave drawers, USB ports and charging stations, and ample cabinetry and shelving are just a few examples of how to simplify the countertops.

“The beauty of building a custom kitchen is that you get to make it your own. Every door and drawer should have its use.”

“Pretty doesn’t always mean functional,” says Elizabeth A. Rosensteel, an interior designer whose custom kitchens just happen to be as practical as they are pretty. “We design for the unique style of the client and customize our designs for optimal usability and functional space while maintaining an artistic integrity,” she says. Using palettes inspired by the surrounding environment, the natural terrain and the architectural elements of the house, Rosensteel adopts a trend-free approach to interior design. “We create environments that are enduring and long-lasting. My designs are not based on fads and passing trends. We are very specific about the functional aspects of a kitchen or bath,” she says.

ADVICE FROM JANET BROOKS, ASID “For the kitchen, it sometimes works best to create two separate islands, which provides good storage opportunities in both islands and separates the barstools from the serious, working part of the kitchen. In the bathroom, it is important to have good lighting on the face. This can be done with pendants or sconces mounted at the correct height. Recessed lighting shining down from the ceiling creates ugly shadows. Powder rooms present the perfect opportunity to pull out all the stops and showcase unique design concepts. Rather than a tired pony wall between the water closet and sink, come up with a more exciting way to provide a little privacy, like a textured-glass and stainless-steel panel.”

No two spaces are more important functionally than kitchens and bathrooms. In these spaces, the delicate balance of form and function is a must. The materials used need to be practical for everyday use, and the layouts need to meet the needs of the homeowners’ lifestyle. Because so much time is spent in both, they must be the most beautiful and memorable spaces as well. The challenge with more contemporary design styles is providing clients with all of the functional aspects of a very efficient kitchen and a comfortable bathroom, while avoiding visual clutter and confusion. “Sometimes clients are tempted to sacrifice a little function here and there to keep a clean, minimalist look,” says Janet Brooks, principal of Janet Brooks Design, “but I encourage them to realistically consider how they might feel about their decision down the road.”

“I like to create a palette of colors and finishes that flows throughout the home to create a feeling of overall continuity.”

I believe in a neutral palette of natural materials and the power of antiques to convey history. I am inspired by classic designs with a contemporary, timeless feeling.” As kitchens and bathrooms rank among the most used and beloved spaces, Rautbord is no stranger to perfecting them, counting aesthetic flow and natural light as essential components. “Cohesion is so important, because we want these spaces to be calming and centering after the frenzy of the day,” Rautbord says. “The alpenglow at dusk on the McDowell Mountains is so majestic; it informs how a room can look under different daylight and shade conditions.”

BATH ESSENTIALS 1

THE W GROUP 480.229.3455 | thewgroupaz.com |

Whether for a spa lover, parents of young children or an on-the-go relaxaphobe, Westcott points to a few musts in every bath design: Privacy, cleanliness and comfort are the essential triad of bathroom design. Every homeowner has a different sense of priorities—luxuriously oversize showers, deep soaking tubs, counter and storage space—but above all else, the bath should feel like a sanctuary at the end of a long day.

luxuryarizonarealestate

Ranked among the top 1 percent of Arizona’s realtors and previously the No. 1 realtor at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International, Lisa Westcott, of The W Group, offers expert insight into the role kitchens and baths play in today’s home-buying and -selling success. “Kitchens and baths are at the heart of a home’s utility,” she says. “As such, design must emphasize functionality first.” While kitchens have moved toward open floor plans and multipurpose spaces, baths have become the luxury sanctuaries of the home. “Kitchens are a natural gathering point, and often at the center of a night with friends or family,” she says. “As a result, more homeowners are demanding seamless flow from kitchens to family, living and dining rooms.” In both spaces, Westcott says simple, pure colors are having their moment, with whites, grays and the occasional accent “splash.”

“We have a deep passion for connecting clients with homes that allow them to live their best lives.”

2

LIGHT+BRIGHT: REFRESHING DESIGN The simplest—and most dramatic—change that homeowners can make to their kitchens and baths typically comes from finding ways to control and emphasize light. We tend to correlate light with cleanliness, and cleanliness with comfort. As such, opening walls, expanding lighting, and selecting bright color palettes can have an immediate and powerful impact on spaces.

1. In fair weather regions, outdoor kitchens—complete with prep areas, grills and ovens—can change the very essence of entertaining. 2. Seamless kitchen and sitting spaces help keep the resident chef engaged with guests and family during meal prep. 3. Extraordinary care is taken in modern bathroom design to allow windows and natural light, while maintaining privacy.

I

t was 115 degrees in July when a New Jersey couple first visited Phoenix on the advice of a friend. Almost immediately they began looking at real estate, and by the end of the week they’d put in an offer on a lot in Scottsdale’s Mirabel golf community and were discussing a ground-up build with residential designer Gary Wyant and general contractor Tony Calvis. Sitting on the patio of their completed house, the wife laughs at the memory. “We weren’t actually supposed to buy anything,” she says. “I kept telling my husband, ‘We can’t be impulsive.’ But we just fell in love with the place.” Wyant introduced the clients to interior designer Lissa Lee Hickman, whose gift for creating interiors that embody what she calls “livable luxury” was just what they were looking for. Hickman has called Arizona home since 1993, and she understood what drew her clients to the area. “I love the mountains here and how they contrast with the green of the golf courses,” she says. “And I love the fact that it’s a growing city.” Self-described “T-shirts and jeans people,” the couple sought a vacation retreat that could comfortably accommodate them and their college-age son and daughter. Proximity to the golf course was key, but they also wanted a house where they could entertain friends and extended family. The wife leaned toward a rustic aesthetic while her husband was specific about what he didn’t want: ultra-modern or Pueblo-style details. Wyant and Calvis responded with a plan for a Mediterraneaninspired home characterized by open spaces and an easy flow from indoors to out. “The vision was for the exterior architecture to be old-world-rural Mediterranean in style,” explains Wyant, “but the interior was to be more contemporary and fun.”

Hickman chose Calacatta gold marble for the master bathroom. “There’s nothing better than an all-white bathroom,” she says. “And the marble is timeless.” Adds the homeowner, “I was worried it would be too formal, but we love it.” The tub and faucet are from Studio41 Home Design Showroom.

Project manager Mike O’Connor oversaw the build and, as the house took shape, the wife flew in from the East Coast every couple of months to shop with Hickman and check on construction. “Lissa knew we were 2,500 miles away and really took ownership of the project,” she says. “I’d come to town, and one day we’d look at door hardware and the next we’d shop for bathroom tile or flooring.” Designing a vacation residence isn’t all that different from doing a primary residence, Hickman points out. “It’s about tuning in and asking the client how they live and how they want to feel in the space.”

In keeping with the wife’s love of authentic materials, she and Calvis Wyant’s team selected elements like handpainted tiles and reclaimed wood and brick. The layered, textural approach begins outside, with walls clad in DC Cobble fieldstone and brick. Terra-cotta tiles line the floor of the entry, which opens to the brick-accented great room, an expansive, high-ceilinged volume that encompasses a living and dining area. In the kitchen, reclaimed beams and wood planking are balanced by crisp white walls and cabinetry and marble counters. The couple originally requested dark wood floors in the main rooms, but Hickman, who designs

A Dennis & Leen chandelier adds sparkle to the master bedroom, where Hickman went with a custom bed, bench and bedding. For the A. Rudin armchairs, she chose an upholstery fabric from Thibaut. The tray ceiling is trimmed in reclaimed planking from Trestlewood.

Calvis and Wyant clad the home’s exterior in DC Cobble fieldstone from Modern Group. “The rural Mediterranean style is popular in Arizona because our climate is similar to that part of the world,” Wyant notes. Plantings were selected by landscape designer Brandon LaCombe of Desert Springs Outdoor Environments. The Kingsley Bate wicker chairs are from Inside/Out Showrooms; the chaises are by On the Veranda.

“from the ground up,” guided them instead to white oak. “Light floors visually expand a space,” she notes, “and here they tie in with all that reclaimed wood.” Similarly, she specified a light-colored grout for the brickwork “to keep it from feeling too heavy or weighed down.” The luminous interior is reinforced by a simple palette of white, cream and blue, along with furnishings Hickman custom designed for the house, like the dining table and chairs in the great room and the breakfast room table. Throughout, she sprinkled hand-selected pieces, such as the refinished antique doors that lead to the master bedroom. Making everything work together is all about balance, Hickman notes. “When you walk into a room, it’s important that it just feels good. A space should quietly unfold as you walk through it.” Details in every room invite lingering, from the breakfast room’s groin-vaulted brick ceiling to the wood planking on the tray ceiling in the master bedroom. While their guests favor the freestanding casita off the pool—“They don’t want to leave,” quips the wife—the couple gravitates to the covered patio off the pool or the pergola off the master bedroom, where they can watch the golfers nearby. For now, the house serves as a family getaway and a jumping-off point for other adventures, but the wife admits she’d like to extend her visits to the desert. “My husband’s not ready to retire yet, but when we leave, he’ll say, ‘Bye, house.’ ” That’s music to Hickman’s ears. “When my clients want to spend more and more time in a home,” she says, “I know I’ve done my job.” luxesource.com / 269

TELLTALE SIGNS A TEMPE-BASED ARTIST BUILDS A PERSONAL MYTHOLOGY THROUGH HIS PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDON SULLIVAN

luxesource.com / 271

Metal scraps and found letters (right) adorn the exterior of the Tempe studio of artist John Randall Nelson (opposite), whose work ranges from sculptures, such as the carved pine piece Punch-n-Judy (far right), to paintings (below).

INFUSED WITH CHILDLIKE GLEE, THE ARTIST’S MYTHICAL VOCABULARY IS A PERSONAL ONE.

G

oing down the rabbit hole takes on a deeper meaning for Tempe-based mixed-media artist John Randall Nelson. Inspired by American Outsider Art, he creates a visual folklore all his own, filling his collage paintings and sculptures with a menagerie of playful figures and symbols, from dancing jackrabbits and swaggering cowboys to lucky wishbones. Infused with childlike glee, this mythical vocabulary is a personal one for the artist, reflecting “all the places I’ve lived and all the art that I’ve been drawn to, distilled through my own filters,” explains Nelson. This accumulated iconography began on childhood jaunts from his native Princeton, Illinois, to nearby Chicago, where he first discovered artists like Jim Nutt and Karl Wirsum. He became immediately drawn to their adaptation of folk art styles and “how they made weird and wonderful narratives with these twisted human figures in unusual settings.” These artists later deeply influenced the fauxnaïve painting style of Nelson’s collages. Painted in flat plains of color, his graphic characters are surrounded by a Pop art landscape of polka dots and faded word fragments that lurk just beyond easy comprehension. Nelson first honed this eye for typography as an illustrator in New York in the early 1990s, working for publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post. Words now form the foundation of these paintings, which start by layering a subsurface of torn phrases taken from vintage texts. He uses the font, he says, “as its own decorative pattern.” Over this, he pours thick coats of acrylic and paints on his unique emblems and decorations. He then scratches away sections with an orbital sander to “rediscover what’s underneath,” he explains, exposing words that become “a sort of subtext that whispers at you.” Though ideas are sketched out beforehand, “what becomes prominent and what becomes buried is intuitive,” explains the artist. “I let the paintings talk, juxtaposing patterns, words and symbols to create a mishmash of meaning.”

luxesource.com / 273

For works like Stumbled (right), the artist layers acrylics (opposite, left) over underpaintings that he then partly reveals by sanding. Canvases in various stages (opposite, right) are stored in his studio, where he displays maquettes for his public art sculpture Burrowed Owl.

274 / luxesource.com

At the core of this process is a celebration of ambiguity. “I’m less interested in creating a certain message. I find open-ended narratives resonate on a deeper, almost transcendental level.” The desert’s fauna and wildlife began to permeate this artistic storytelling when Nelson moved to Tempe in 1995 to complete his MFA at Arizona State University. Since then, he’s adopted the state as his creative home, with representation at Gebert Contemporary in Scottsdale. Arizona has also become a living playground for his symbols through his public art projects. This includes his most iconic figure, the indigenous jackrabbit, which Nelson first fell in love with while hiking the region’s desert trails. His jackrabbit grew giant-size for his 26-foottall statue One-Eyed Jack, installed in 2018 as a

landmark for the Old Town Scottsdale Art District. Inspired by the famous Chicago Picasso statue, the artist tapped into more modernist language, breaking the image down to its elemental parts, then jigsawing the pieces together in collaboration with local fabrication firm R.J. Ruff & Co. Instead of polka dots, the artist injected his signature whimsy by illuminating the steel structure with rainbow LED lights. Reminiscent of Lewis Carroll’s guiding white rabbit, the piece intends to beckon visitors to the area’s blossoming art community. “I wanted to pull from my own personal iconography to create an icon for this neighborhood,” explains Nelson. These public projects also serve as a gesture of gratitude for the artist—returning the symbols that have meant so much back to the places that have fed his imagination.

SIMPLE ELEGANCE AND A SENSE OF HISTORY CHARACTERIZE A DESIGNER’S NEW HOME IN PARADISE VALLEY. WRITTEN BY JEFF TURRENTINE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSHUA WELLS

ARCHITECTURE / MATTHEW THOMAS, MATTHEW THOMAS ARCHITECTURE LLC INTERIOR DESIGN / DANA LYON, THE REFINED GROUP HOME BUILDER / BRETT BRIMLEY, BRIMLEY DEVELOPMENT LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE / JEREMY MCVICARS, REFINED GARDENS

In Paradise Valley, designer Dana Lyon’s home evokes the unstudied elegance of wine country. She designed the living area’s sofas and armchairs, all upholstered in Holly Hunt fabric from John Brooks Incorporated, as well as the bleached walnut coffee table made by Peter Thomas Designs. The pillows are covered in Nobilis fabric from Diane Coté.

I

’m a California girl—a San Francisco girl—so I love Napa Valley,” says Dana Lyon. But the Phoenix–based designer has also spent a great deal of time in rural France, a place dear to her heart and essential to her vision. For the new Paradise Valley home she created for herself and her husband, she wanted “that feeling you get when you stay in the French countryside, or in Napa.” To her that meant an open plan, simple yet elegant furnishings, abundant natural light, and plenty of French doors. To complete the image of a rustic, wine country idyll, Lyon says, the house sits on an actual dirt road, which gives it “a rural feel, even though it’s only minutes from beautiful resorts that are located just around the corner.” In the Sonoran desert, succulents stand in for grapevines. But that substitution notwithstanding, the house handily achieves the goals Lyon set for it. Like an estate situated amongst rolling vineyards, it exemplifies and celebrates casual, comfortable style—and somehow manages to evoke timelessness despite having just been completed earlier this year. Lyon, a former magazine publisher who left that line of work to pursue her passion for design, has called Paradise Valley home for a dozen years now, living “in three different places all within a two-mile radius.” For this home, she says, the keywords were downscaling and simplicity. She had worked with local architect Matthew Thomas before on several commissions and greatly admired his sense of scale, noting, “There’s such a refined objective to all of his projects; they’re not overdone.” He seemed perfect, she thought, for this one. Soon they were once again working as a team.

Left: Lyon drew her inspiration for the kitchen from the French countryside. Her goal for the space was to make the La Cornue range “the hero” of the room. The barstools are covered in Nobilis fabric from Diane Coté. Opposite: The dining area was conceived as an extension of a larger great room that includes the living room and kitchen. The custom dining table by Peter Thomas Designs is surrounded by dining chairs from Eloquence and illuminated by an iron fixture by Hinkley’s Custom Lighting.

In their initial discussions, Thomas says, “Dana was really drawn toward a Colonial style of architecture—the rhythm and symmetry.” The front façade certainly distills these ideas, presenting them with an almost Georgian discipline. At the entry, says landscape designer Jeremy McVicars, “The form of the house is complemented by two extraordinary specimen olive trees.” But if the model is classical and European, this iteration of it has been altered and updated to reflect life in the 21st-century Southwest. Thomas and Lyon “homed in on the graphic quality of crisp white stucco contrasted against the black of the roof and the window and door openings,” says the architect. Working with general contractor Brett Brimley, they recessed doors and windows deeply to provide a sense of permanence,

as well as to mitigate some of the solar heat gain of the southern exposure. Of paramount importance was keeping the detailing as simple as possible, by removing ornamentation where possible in order to establish a simple and clean aesthetic, explains Thomas. That directive became the project’s conceptual lodestar, and inside, Lyon let it guide her through each room. The circumscribed color palette of black, white, gray and tan is designed to soothe and restore. A Lyon trademark is the use of reclaimed materials, especially older wooden doors, which make several appearances here. She likes them for their weathered integrity but also for their scale: Simply put, doors used to be bigger and more interesting looking. “You just can’t really find anything like that today,” she says. luxesource.com / 281

Visible through the French door in the kitchen and throughout the property is landscaping by Jeremy McVicars. The Santa Ana quartz countertop is from Aracruz International Granite; the cabinetry is from Highborn Cabinetry.

For flooring, Lyon opted for engineered wood, from Provenza Floors, with a patina of barely whitewashed white oak. “I looked long and hard for something that looks natural. The coloration is a function of living in Arizona—when you live on a dirt road, there’s a lot of dirt! So I needed something that was easy to clean,” says the designer.

A tone-on-tone chromatic scheme gives the master bedroom a “sanctuary-like” calmness, Lyon notes. The bed and its covering are custom; the throw pillows are covered in Holly Hunt fabric. A pair of paned mirrors from Antiquities Warehouse hangs above matching bedside tables from Eloquence.

Other instances of creative reuse include a mid-19thcentury French limestone cooking stove, now assuming the role of the living room fireplace, and a remarkable 800-pound trough of rusticated stone that’s been called into service as a powder room sink. Lyon found it through a friend—“a woman who’s part of my tribe here and an importer of European mantels and troughs”—and surmises that it was, at one point, “possibly a planter, but even more likely an animal trough, probably for goats. We bought it and designed the base to go underneath it, hoping and praying that it would support it…and it did!” Downscaling often means getting rid of things, but Lyon was determined to hold on to an arched and paned mirror that she’s owned and loved for years. “It didn’t have an obvious spot in the new home,” she says, “but I didn’t want to let it go. I thought maybe I could turn it into a kind of headboard in the guest bedroom. I wasn’t at all sure it would work, but it did—and the way it reflects natural light and spreads it throughout the room is so, so pretty.” All of these touches, says Lyon, are examples of “things that feel very special without feeling overdone.” In this house, they combine to create a natural elegance that’s emblematic of the rolling countryside of California or France. “As a designer doing your own home, your expectations are so great,” she says. “It can be hard to be true to your authentic self. I feel like I got there.”

Opposite: Natural light pours through the windows over the York tub from Victoria + Albert; above is an antique chandelier from France that was restored by Lyon’s firm. Below: “To stay true to myself on this project, I had a rule: Everything had to be very simple and easy to deal with,” Lyon remarks. The master bath’s sinks and Henry faucets are from Waterworks.

CULTURE CROSSING

INSPIRED BY DESIGN TYPICAL OF BOTH INDIA AND THE SOUTHWEST, A GLENDALE HOUSE CELEBRATES A STYLE ALL ITS OWN. WRITTEN BY MINDY PANTIEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROEHNER + RYAN

T

hanks to Bollywood and popular movie imports like Monsoon Wedding, Americans have been afforded a peek into the inner workings of Indian culture. Among the takeaways: a penchant for celebrations— Indian weddings can last for days—and an affection for bold hues, as women wrapped in jewel-toned saris make wearing color an art form. But when it came to designing a home in the hills of Glendale for a couple of Indian descent, interior designers Angelica Henry and Michele Logan opted to roll back the expected emeralds, marigolds and fuchsias in favor of a more neutral approach that allowed the quatrefoil and arabesque patterns associated with that part of the world to sing. “We wanted a more timeless feel,” says Henry. “So instead of bright colors we used a variety of patterns to acknowledge their heritage and provide a level of intricacy that holds everything together.” Smitten with the mountain views at a friend’s home in the same neighborhood, the couple—both doctors with two teenage children—had waited patiently for a similarly sited property to be available. The home they purchased had the right orientation but fell short of their lifestyle needs, which included space for big family gatherings. “It was a small house and we thought we could just add some walls,” the husband recalls. “But when my wife wanted to take off the roof, the builder suggested we just take it down.” Save for the basement and a retaining wall, they agreed to rebuild. In search of inspiration, the couple traveled to Jaipur in their native country to tour the palaces of ancient royalty. “From that trip we got the concept of arches, tall windows and beautiful ceilings,” the wife says.

“A WIDE VARIETY OF PATTERNS ACKNOWLEDGES THE OWNERS’ HERITAGE AND PROVIDES A LEVEL OF INTRICACY.” –ANGELICA HENRY

During early meetings with architect Edward Chavez, the couple shared ideas gleaned from their travels— along with a desire for two kitchens. “Our food is very spicy, so we wanted a separate kitchen where we can cook and the aromas won’t reach the rest of the house,” the wife explains. Having worked with other families of a similar background, Chavez had grown accustomed to such requests and thought nothing of creating layouts to accommodate guest lists that routinely rise into the triple digits. “When they have a party, they start with a hundred people and go from there,” says Chavez, who collaborated with project architect Ernesto Ramirez. On the outside, the stucco structure, with its tile roof and cantera accents, is characteristic of the Mediterranean homes typical of the area. “The owners wanted it to be compatible with the neighborhood,” Chavez notes. Inside, however, the arabesque-patterned light fixture in the entry and the cappuccino marble floors that run the length of the grand hallway suggest otherwise. “The house is 70 feet long,” the architect notes, “but the inclusion of formal arches and groin vaults make it seem less so.” Meanwhile, Henry and Logan scoured books and the Internet to speed up their Indian design learning curves. “It was not a style we had worked with before and we were excited to take a unique, modern approach,” says Henry. In lieu of color, intricate rosettes on the living room fireplace, a carved opening over the kitchen vent hood, and fretwork resembling lace that follows the form of the shaped mirror in the powder room became their statement makers. “Everything was meant to be an extension of the established architecture,” says Logan, who credits builder Russell Longo with implementing many of the changes. To embrace the bed in the master suite, for example, Longo executed a recessed alcove featuring its own unique set of undulations. Finding furnishings in sync with the swirls and flourishes was no easy task, but the contemporary take on a wingback chair with an arched hood in the entry and the wood-framed living room seating with carved backs and throne-like countenances easily clears the bar. “With any design you have to have stars of the show, and these items get noticed,” Henry says. “They were also the perfect way to bring an architectural feature into the home.” In the dining room, the host chairs sheathed in a brightly patterned fabric are the attention grabbers, and the glassbeaded chandelier, which makes repeat appearances in the living room and master suite, adds a touch of opulence. Framed panels with a mother-of-pearl accent up the ante in the media room on the lower level. According to Logan, maintaining a balance between simple and more intricate interjections is what the house is all about. “It’s a modern interpretation of Indian design that embodies Indian influences while maintaining a timeless quality,” she sums up. “And it’s uniquely tailored to the people who live there.”

In the entry, a tiered arabesque chandelier from Hinkley’s Custom Lighting and artwork depicting a Sikh golden temple by Alexandra Reid from Think Art Gallery introduce the Indian heritage of the homeowners. The wingback chairs are from Global Views and the wood cabinet with inlaid capiz-shell doors is by Bernhardt.

A gold leaf chandelier with crystal accents by John Richard and chairs from Global Views set an elegant stage for entertaining in the living room. Designers Angelica Henry and Michele Logan chose the glass coffee table by Caracole for its trellis pattern, one of the many intricate design elements that define the interiors.

This page: Carved doors by Distinctive Custom Cabinetry open to a guest suite at the end of a grand hallway lined with Crema Cappuccino marble floors from MSI. Pendants from Currey & Company are suspended from the vaulted ceiling. Opposite: In the dining room, a 10-footlong white oak table by Bernhardt was a must for big family gatherings. “The wife loves feminine pieces and was drawn to the tufting, Henry says of the classic side chairs, also from Bernhardt, that offset the contemporary Century host chairs upholstered in Pindler fabric.

Right: In a house defined by shape and pattern, even the tub by MTI conforms. The tub filler is by Brizo, and Walker Zanger tiles are part of the home’s neutral backdrop. An Aidan Gray chandelier from Sun Lighting provides a glow for evening soaks. Opposite: Details like the Lori Weitzner wallcovering and the carved niche complementing the sculpted headboard lend distinction to the master bedroom. A Visual Comfort mercury glass lamp on the weathered oak Bernhardt nightstand supplies reading light.
