POP OF COLOR
Micah Tipler, founder of TIPLER Design, is a true believer in embracing color in the kitchen. With DacorMatch, the innovative color system introduced by leading luxury appliance brand, Dacor, you can personalize your appliances in any pantone imaginable. Show your true colors. All of them.

Micah Tipler PRINCIPAL, TIPLER DESIGN Houston, TX
H
ouston based interior designer and Dacor Design Council member, Micah Tipler, is a force in the design, architecture, procurement, showroom, development, and build industries. Her “outside of the box approach has earned her status as an industry leader, and she is applauded for the design risks she takes, including her creative use of color in kitchen projects.

“What excites my design team and our clients about DacorMatch is the capability to truly customize something.” DacorMatch allows designers and their clients to customize the kitchen like never before. “Everyone uses their kitchen in a slightly different way. Being able to tailor it to fit all of our clients’ needs has become critical to the design process,” Tipler says. The DacorMatch Color System makes it possible to paint Heritage wall ovens and ranges in any color on the spectrum. “We’ve done ranges in subdued colors, from pearl white to navy blue. But we’ve also designed fun ovens in teal, fuchsia and orange, making something really unique and special,” she shares. The process is simple. By providing Dacor with your selected color swatch, the team will match it exactly, delivering a custom appliance fit to your taste. Tipler shares from experience: “Once we’ve established a color palette for a particular project, we determine an accent color that speaks to the client. Then, we provide Dacor with a pantone number, and the team creates a sample to send us for approval. It’s been a match every time.” In addition, Dacor offers seven standard colors to choose from. “DacorMatch is truly limitless, which as a designer, is hugely exciting,” Tipler says. “Being able to specify a personalized appliance for our clients that we know they’ll enjoy with their families for years is game-changing.” From start to finish, DacorMatch appliances take six to seven weeks. Warming Drawer in DacorMatch upon special request only.

EDITOR’S LETTER
Designers are increasingly seeking out bespoke pieces for their clients, such as this bold wall treatment by MJ Atelier (right).
Welcome to our annual Luxury Report issue dedicated to luxury in all its forms and iterations. To prepare for this issue, our editors reached out to designer-friends to ask, “How do you define luxury?” It’s interesting to read their responses. Certainly, it’s not about extravagance or price. For many, it’s about comfort, calm and a sense of peace in an otherwise noisy and somewhat chaotic world. Luxury is most definitely about anything that is made with great care and an attention to detail. I think it’s also about originality, which seems to be rarer to find these days. Most anything that’s elusive or slightly out of reach can be perceived as luxurious. Of course, time is the ultimate luxury: The idea of waiting for something to be made, (while we’re all programmed for instant gratification these days) seems sumptuous. I can relate to Ken Fulk’s response—that luxury is about the little things, like the scent of fresh-clipped flowers or an unplanned Sunday spent on the sofa. Can’t count how many weekends I’ve fallen into a nap on my red English roll arm, with a paperback novel atop my lap and my two Shih Tzu’s curled up beside me. Heaven!

Fashion designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” With customization on the rise, many designers could apply the sentiment to homes outfitted with bespoke elements—including Achille Salvagni, principal of his eponymous international architectural and design practice. “In the last 10 years, my clientele has increasingly sought out homes that are oneof-a-kind,” he says. “In many ways, looking for a designer is like looking for a tailor that can make a dress that fits your body perfectly.” He cites a client who recently hired him to create a highly custom home in Mumbai, India. “She wanted a living room that was a portrait of her family,” he explains. “After interviewing

the family members, I created furniture that represents the qualities of each. A sofa embodies the personality of the father, the table is inspired by the daughter—together, all the furniture tells this family’s story.” Maria Apelo Cruz, who co-founded the decorative arts studio MJ Atelier with her husband Mike Jovanovic, also sees an increase in customers seeking one-off wallcoverings, furnishings and lighting. “We are riding the wave of designers who want to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Today’s clients are looking for conversation pieces that no one else has.” An example is the wallcovering they made for an inveterate video gamer that includes symbology from classics including Zelda, Pac-Man and Pokémon.
Cruz says that bringing a designer’s creations to life requires finding the right craftspeople, and that’s challenging. “Many aspects of quality craftsmanship take a lifetime to master—so by the time you’ve perfected your trade, it’s time to retire,” she says. “Traditionally, a lot of information was passed down through families, but these days, some of the offspring of contemporary craftspeople are pursuing other things.” To keep those skills alive, she and her husband have started

personal aspect that makes the effort and expenditure worth it. The company offers their products in bespoke sizes, colors and fabrics. “Every person has a different idea about what makes the perfect design elements. What could be better than picking your own fabrics in the color combination to make something just for you? Customization is the ultimate expression of luxury.”
Custom designs take the form of personalized wall treatments, such as the one shown on the previous page by MJ Atelier. Other examples include Hammerton Custom’s oneof-a-kind lighting fixtures (top, right); interior furnishings by Achille Salvagni (center); and personalized linens by Matouk (below, left).

a teaching guild—and to the couple’s delight, they are discovering an eager audience. “The stereotype of a millennial is a person staring at a computer screen,” Cruz says. “But we’ve found many young people who want to learn how to paint, draw and gild.” That’s not to say there’s no place for computer screens in today’s customization climate. In fact, technology is facilitating even higher levels of tailored details. “These days, we have old-world techniques and modern tools living together—you’ll find an anvil next to computer-driven cutting equipment,” says Paul Verbecky, the general manager at Hammerton Custom. “Computer modeling is enabling us to do things we couldn’t have imagined in the past—we recently created a model showing a 6,000-pound fixture that’s 25 feet at its widest point. It’s the easiest and fastest way to show how a piece like that would look in a space.” But custom design takes longer and is more expensive to produce—so why are more consumers seeking it out? George Matouk, Jr., CEO and president of the linen company that bears his family’s name, believes it’s the

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN TEAMS UP WITH PERENNIALS TO CREATE FABRICS AND RUGS THAT WORK INDOORS AND OUT. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON
Timothy Corrigan is a self-proclaimed “Perennials freak.” With the debut of his new seven-fabric, three-rug collection, Perennials by Timothy Corrigan, the celebrated designer has put his own stamp on the high-performance fabric company’s “rugged yet beautiful” ideology. Luxe got the scoop on this exciting collaboration and why indoor-outdoor textiles are the future of design. You are crazy about high-performance fabrics. I’ve been using performance textiles for years— back when they were still ugly striped canvases! I realized early on, if you don’t have to worry about how you’re living in a house then it makes such a difference. I know some people who won’t let anyone drink red wine in their home, and I hate everything about that! When it is a “look but don’t touch” zone, then you’re not comfortable, your family isn’t comfortable and your guests aren’t comfortable. And the appeal of Perennials? It’s a gamechanger. Not all performance fabrics are created equal, and Perennials is kind of fanatical with how its fabrics perform. Also, the rugs feel like the
finest wool or silk. The company’s beautiful, soft carpet is stain-proof, which is exactly what people want. Customers want beauty and practicality. What was the spark for your collection? I have offices in Paris and Los Angeles, so my aesthetic is very much European-inspired, but through a casual California filter. In this collection there’s a fabric that is almost like an Italian tapestry, which is called Go for Baroque. There are also chinoiserie options, one which is inspired by a Chinese wallpaper and another that is reminiscent of an 18th-century interpretation of a French chinoiserie. You skew traditional, while Perennials leans contemporary. This was a real leap for Perennials. Ann Sutherland, who started the company, isn’t naturally drawn to the warmer colors and classical styles that I use but she said, “That’s why we need you!” I told her, “This is not going to be in your comfort zone. Be ready for it.” What’s in the crystal ball for performance fabrics? It’s important to see these fabrics as

something to be used indoors and figuring out how more products can be performance based. We’ll also see an expansion into materials like wood finishes with marine varnish so people don’t have to worry about putting down a glass. The future of design is influenced by consumers who are not willing to make the trade-off between performance and beauty.

THE LATEST TABLETOP FINDS ADD A TOUCH OF ARTFUL LIVING TO THE EVERYDAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
This season’s spirited tabletop selections are making it easy to transform everyday place settings into luxurious works of art. Each piece offers a creative expression while also evoking a bold sense of time and place. Consider Buccellati’s Doge collection, which inspirits its Italian craftmanship and pays homage to the splendors of Venetian art with hand-hammered and chiseled silver enhanced with malachite, lapis and red jasper. Closer to home, Michelle Blade looked to her Pacific Northwestern roots for her ceramic Garden Series. Molly Hatch’s Always Collection brings a modern and playful twist to a traditional 18th-century European surface pattern, and Luke Edward Hall’s collaboration with Richard Ginori is based on his love of Greco-Roman mythology. And finally, James Peter Henry morphed his public art installation at TableArt into a limited-edition collection that celebrates “the complexity of a human journey in a possible fourth-dimensional state.”

Fashion, design and movie buffs alike are descending on Chicago History Museum for a glamorous new costume exhibition, on view through January 2020. “Silver Screen to Mainstream: American Fashion in the 1930s and ’40s” features 30 ensembles—many on display for the first time—from the museum’s permanent collection that trace Hollywood’s influence on American fashion, illustrating a time period bookended by the stock market crash in 1929 and the end of World War II. “With 50,000 pieces in the museum’s worldclass collection, it was key to winnow down to the pieces that best supported the exhibition story and were visually impactful,” says Virginia Heaven, curator of the exhibition. “The variety of fabric and embellishment reveals the texture and contrast evident in black-and-white film, while the range of colors reminds us that, although movies were monochrome, fashion was not.” chicagohistory.org

This designing dream team actually met through Instagram. “She started following me and reached out,” says Johnstone. “She invited me to a dinner at her home, and we did a trunk show with a dinner in mine. We have a ‘mom’ connection, too—our children are similar ages, and our families come first.” She practices what she preaches. “My house isn’t one that’s just looked at; we have a lot of fun in it. Started in 2015, the Chicago Architecture Biennial is the largest architecture and design exhibition in North America, serving as a platform for creatives from around the world to let their imaginations soar through exhibitions, full-scale installations and thought-provoking programming. The 2019 edition—titled “…and other such stories”—will open September 19 and run through January 5. Of the 51 Biennial participants, five are from Chicago: Borderless Studio, Maria Gaspar, Forensic Architecture and Invisible Institute, Sweet Water Foundation and Theaster Gates. Through their own unique works, each artist or firm will aim to spark dialogue on architecture and the built environment, with curatorial focuses on topics such as nature and landscape, memories related to social histories, and advocacy and civic purpose. chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org

How does 30 feel? MG: Weird and interesting and great. We just hired a CEO, Allison O’Connor, to spearhead things, nurture our team and position us for even bigger and better growth in the future. Greatest lesson learned while in business? BW: Follow your gut. If you don’t have that really deep feeling about something, it may not be quite perfect. So many people let others get in their minds or talk them out of stuff, then things go kind of haywire. Proudest accomplishment as a company? BW: Day care. We started it 22 years ago. Since then we’ve had about 70 kids there all the time. You get to see them grow up. What’s next? MG: A whole new take on leather club chairs in exciting colors, like leaf green, deep red and peacock blue (shown). Some of the silhouettes are classic modern while others have a very new traditional look. 118 / luxesource.com
CHECK IN NOBU HOTEL
Following The Hoxton in April, Nobu Hotel Chicago is one of the most anticipated hotel debuts in the city, set to open its doors in October. A partnership between Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa and actor Robert De Niro, the hotel features an exterior that fuses old-world Japanese art, newworld utilitarian architecture and accessible sophistication—a perfect match among the West Loop vintage buildings that surround it. With local Modif Architecture as the architect of record and Studio K Creative handling design, the guest rooms boast a mix of dark and light that plays off the shadows, resulting in artful patterns and geometry in each space. Of course, Nobu wouldn’t be complete without an eponymous restaurant; the property will also have a stunning rooftop space and a sushi bar. nobuhotelchicago.com

Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, owners of the ultra-successful furniture company that bears their name, are in a car, speeding through rural North Carolina on a weekday morning. Moving forward quickly is an apt metaphor for their business, which is now celebrating its 30 th anniversary. Gold and Williams initially founded a factory in Taylorsville to ensure superior, American-made products, then proceeded to take care of their now 900-plus employees by establishing on-site day care, a gym, a health center and a café. Their progressive policies rocked the furniture industry, and their products—vintage-style leather club chairs and seating slipcovered in casual fabrics—did too. The duo spoke with Luxe about their time in the industry. mgbwhome.com

THE LOOK An insider’s guide to what’s new in the world of posh high-rise living, plus bold color ideas to enliven the home’s high-traffic zones.
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
INTO the BLUE ONCE OVERLOOKED KITCHEN STORAGE SPACES ARE REINVENTED WITH RICH, JUICY COLOR. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.
“I love using bold color in a room that feels unexpected,” explains Houston-based designer Lauren Haskett of this sophisticated butler’s pantry scheme that packs a punch with its sensuous blue shade. Traditionally, the kitchen has been a neutral zone where clients steered clear of adventurous tones. Yet today designers are turning to bright and dramatic designs in the kitchen’s auxiliary spaces: Think glamorous and vivid gem tones in a prep kitchen, butler’s pantry or wet bar. These more modest areas are being transformed into rich jewel boxes—a surprising departure from what was once a purely functional room. As Haskett notes, “Color really sets the tone of the room.” So why not add some drama to peeling potatoes and storing spaghetti sauce?

Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball decorates the butler’s pantry in this Westlake, Texas, home, while Visual Comfort pendants hang from the barrel ceiling covered in a pale blue Elizabeth Dow wallpaper.
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
PANTRY PERFECT LAUREN HASKETT
While using a strong color took some persuading (Black was the original pick!), designer Lauren Haskett always knew her client’s butler’s pantry needed something fresh. The trick was elevating the design of this space with polished surfaces and elegant details that were in keeping with the rest of this stately home near Fort Worth, Texas. houstoninteriordesign.co Tell us about the function of this space. I call this the butler’s pantry, but it really has a multitude of uses including acting as a connector between the main kitchen, media room and mudroom, so it gets used all the time. As the kitchen space only has one wall of cabinetry, this room doubles as a coffee bar, wet bar, charging station, storage area for china and catering kitchen. Several appliances, including a Perlick refrigerator, Scotsman ice machine and KitchenAid dishwasher, are also housed in the pantry.
A Native Trails sink and Kallista faucet sit in front of a large window that looks out onto the patio and pool. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls.

Is the same level of sophistication carried throughout the house? The overall aesthetic of the home is definitely on the formal side and even the spaces that are casual still have an elegance to them, so I wanted to make sure the butler’s pantry reflected how refined this residence is. I also wanted to inject a dose of glamour with this grand color.
photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.
The color is so striking. How did you select it? I’m so happy we went with Hague Blue because there is so much depth to it; it can go green, blue and gray all at the same time. However, what’s most important when working with a darker color in a space is to incorporate contrast, so it won’t ever feel like a cave. Here, we added lighter countertops, pale wallpaper, metallic hardware and glass-front cabinets that bounce light around.

Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl, the designers behind West Hollywood, California, firm Studio Life.Style, wanted to make sure the spaces they created for a clients’ home in Los Angeles had longevity and an enduring aesthetic for their growing family. In the boy’s bathroom they decided to focus on a scheme that was fun and playful yet sophisticated enough to stand the test of time. “Patterned tiles are a great way to bring in color,” the designers explain of a bath area lined with graphic greenand-white tiles, a combination that feels less expected than the traditional blue and brings in bit of whimsy. studio-lifestyle.com 208 / luxesource.com

MORGANTE-WILSON ARCHITECTS
Project type: Single-family home
“No matter how big or small, everyone has a story,” says Elissa Morgante, referring to hearing her clients’ hopes and dreams for their new homes. Morgante and Fred Wilson teamed up more than 30 years ago to start their firm, Morgante-Wilson Architects, shortly after graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago—both with master’s degrees in architecture. A little over a decade later, the dynamic duo hit a new milestone, opening the interior design side of the business and expanding the firm’s offerings. Known for its transitional, light-filled, clean and contextual designs, Morgante-Wilson has completed residential projects across the country, and plans to expand into commercial properties and high-end multifamily units. When seeking creative and unique solutions to a design dilemma, Morgante and Wilson look to travel and industry resources for inspiration. “And we always maintain a curious eye,” Wilson adds. Designing and working with “inspired” people, as they describe their clients, Morgante and Wilson take great pride in listening to the homeowner and having a flexible approach to style. “All styles are engaging and fun to master,” Morgante says. “Whether we’re achieving an established aesthetic or creating a perfect hybrid, we appreciate the challenge.”

INSIDE THE AWARD-WINNING PROJECT:
CRAIG BERGMANN LANDSCAPE DESIGN Having worked in the North Shore area of Chicago for over three decades, much of Craig Bergmann Landscape Design’s work has focused on revitalizing landscapes and conceiving of new outdoor spaces for old, often historic properties. This niche is a sweet spot for president Craig Bergmann, who embraces the “what-ifs” of every project he takes on. “Creating a real relationship with the site and the clients yields a dynamic collaboration that always provides great satisfaction and new friends,” he says. From the first project that put his company on the map—an acre-large rehabilitation project in Kenilworth, Illinois, with a beautiful Benjamin Marshall-designed home—to his recent RED Award-winning project—one of the grandest residential parcels on the shores of Lake Michigan, and home to an important architectural piece of Chicagoland history—Bergmann’s landscapes speak to his eclectic approach and the intimate relationship he forms with every project owner and site. “Our clients truly appreciate their home and property. They want the best quality and the unique style reflected in the details and feelings their garden spaces provide,” he says. “Often well-traveled, they know the realm of possibilities and need a trusted professional to interpret their dreams.” That’s where Craig Bergmann Landscape Design takes root.

OUR ANNUAL DEEP DIVE INTO REAL ESTATE AND THE SHEER LUXURY OF HIGH-RISE LIVING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL
PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
MOVING ON UP Over the last few years, more and more people have been gravitating toward cities and the vibrant lifestyle that high-rise living delivers. Young executives, international professionals, families and retired couples are looking for ease, convenience and walkability—museums, restaurants and schools at their doorstep—but all within the frame of luxury living. To meet the demand, developers are turning to the world’s most respected architects and designers to create residential buildings that meet every need, and quite a few whims. A latenight cognac and a game of billiards? A sunrise swim in the infinity pool overlooking the city? It’s all possible. And while the amenities are designed to feel resort-like, they are also intended to feel like home.

RISE
The Harrison, on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, was ahead of the curve when it devoted its penthouse floor not to the preeminent condo but to its residents’ pleasure—a democratizing move that new developments are following. There, designer Ken Fulk, who designed all of the property’s public spaces, created Uncle Harry’s, a green-lacquered lounge that lets everyone take in the 49th floor’s spectacular vistas. “With 180-degree views spanning from the ocean to the bay, we imagined this as the sky-high aerie of a bon vivant explorer that just happens to be your favorite uncle,” says Fulk. Accessed by a grand entry salon, the floor includes a dining room, pantry, fitness center and spa. It’s an homage to the city’s elegant and continental spirit, just with Fulk’s signature pizazz. theharrisonsf.com

Lobby library at 277 Fifth Avenue “Our design reflects the energy and sensibility of NoMad,” says Jeffrey Beers of his vision for 277 Fifth Avenue. “It’s my favorite neighborhood in New York, so it was easy to be inspired by the area’s historical buildings and creative vibe.” Making a traditional statement in thoroughly modern style is the lobby library, one of the building’s most sophisticated amenities. 277fifth.com Why a library? In the building’s lobby entrance, we really wanted to make an instant “welcome home” statement. Describe the look. Handsome, sensible, tailored and timeless. Tell us about the features. If you look closely, you’ll see the library mimics the building’s exterior. It’s beautifully made with dramatic, double-height cases and incredible wood detailing. While we have an affection for designing bookcases (I’m an avid book collector), we prefer to collaborate with renowned publishers like Assouline to curate what goes onto the shelves.

HIGH SOCIETY
FOUR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS CHAT ABOUT LUXURY AMENITIES AND THE FUTURE OF HIGH-RISE LIVING.
CURT R. BAILEY
LEONARD STEINBERG
KEVIN BATCHELOR
BRIAN LEVITT
What trends are you seeing in the high-rise sector? Developers will increasingly cater to families who appreciate the benefits of urban living—a graciously designed residence that extends to worldclass amenities for all generations. Must-have amenity: Fitness centers. I want state-of-the-art equipment, first-class service, innovative programming, and well-designed spaces that offer communal cardio workouts to private Pilates sessions. relatedmidwest.com
Why is the high-rise market so hot? Time is the last luxury, and high-rise living delivers convenience. Elevating yourself above the city allows you to enjoy all its joys while separating yourself when it’s time to relax and unwind. Amenities on the horizon: Wind turbines on top, generating energy for the entire building and a landing pad for drone deliveries. Security will become much greater, too. compass.com
Who’s moving in? In the past decade, we have seen a downsizing trend amongst empty nesters, gypsy nesters and older millennials. What’s luring them? This demographic wants walkability and a 24-hour, lock-and-leave lifestyle. Everyone wants their own personal concierge to handle everything from dry cleaning and food deliveries to tickets to the opera. They’re looking for higher-quality, personalized butler-style services. You can’t beat the hyper-convenience. hines.com
What amenity is most important to you? Where we live has a profound effect on our well-being and I’m all for beautifully designed common spaces that encourage gathering. How do you see the high-rise lifestyle advancing? People choose condo living because they want to know their neighbors. There needs to be a renewed focus on creating memorable experiences that build a stronger connection between people, place and community. navareal.com

15 Hudson Yards, a collaboration between architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, who oversaw the interiors, has devoted its 51st floor to entertaining amenities that will thrill epicureans and oenophiles alike. Not only are there private dining suites and a speakeasylike wine storage facility, but also a chef’s kitchen and wine tasting room. Rockwell defined the kitchen with a monolithic stone island and opted for leather counter stools in shades of gray and green—all in keeping with the project’s focus on natural materials and interiors that are, “simultaneously calm and strong,” he says. Adding to the gastronomic delights are the property’s restaurants by such luminaries as Thomas Keller and José Andrés. hudsonyardsnewyork.com

ASK THE DESIGN PROFESSIONAL What are the top trends for 2019? Many trends center on clean lines and the incorporation of gray and blue accents. White painted cabinets are still a strong element, while unlacquered or soft-brushed brass is an elegant option in lieu of nickel. How have things changed in your industry? The technology associated with our products is ever improving. For instance, LED lighting provides new design opportunities and internal mechanisms for cabinetry, providing a new way of determining use and organization.

There are a few essential elements that are necessary for having a great kitchen. Intangible concepts, like practicality, usability and function, are at the core of a sound cooking and gathering space. Tangible pieces, like gorgeous cabinetry, best-in-class appliances and exceptional materials elevate any kitchen or bath, regardless of style. Tastemakers Brandy Cohen and Alexander Adducci, senior designers at 210 Design House, weigh in on what’s new and noteworthy in the kitchen. “We’ve been experimenting with dark/black cabinet finishes paired with warmer wood tones. Navy is also popping up with white or lighter grays,” Cohen reveals. Adducci praises push-to-open assist technology. “Apply pressure to the door and it automatically opens a few inches, providing a space to open all the way. No handles required.”
“Keep it simple. Less is more, whether working with sleek, contemporary design or ornate, traditional styles.”

Colors are always subjective to location and client style. True winners that translate well to cabinetry are rich, mineral-inspired hues like bottle green, Admiral blue and burgundy. CALIA STONE BOUTIQUE 312.626.2254 | caliastone.com |
calia_stone_boutique
When it comes to kitchen and bath design, Kristin Schloemer points to countertops as the starting point. It’s a fitting response for the owner of Calia Stone Boutique, who is changing the way homeowners and designers shop for natural stone. Gone are the days of driving long distances, carrying cabinets through warehouses, and searching aisles for the perfect match. Calia’s selection showroom makes the process easier and faster with endless samples and images on hand, and an inviting setting in which to begin. “When it’s time to view full slabs, Calia has them out and ready,” says Schloemer, referring to her vast inventory of high-quality marbles, quartzites, soapstone, onyx, travertine, granite and more. “Our mission is to offer exotic resources to the design community, while delivering exceptional customer service and having fun in the process.”
“We see natural stone as Mother Nature’s art. You won’t leave Calia without forming a new love for what makes it so unique.”
BRINGING INNOVATION TO THE SURFACE Color. After years of gray and white, we are getting more requests for color, and couldn’t be happier. It’s also refreshing to see marble make a comeback; performance doesn’t always outweigh beauty. Finishes. Texture can do a lot for design, especially when mixing and matching. A soft honed or rough, leathered finish gives comfort and edge to an otherwise formal space. Changing the finish can slightly change the color as well, so if you don’t find the exact material you want, changing the finish might be the fix. Countertops. Oftentimes, countertops are one of the last finishes, and after a project goes over budget, they end up taking the hit. Countertops are one of the most visually stimulating parts of a kitchen or bath design, and the surface you touch the most, so don’t skimp on this important element of design.

FLAWLESS FINISHES In the bathroom, Dornbracht’s Meta line has embodied contemporary minimalism for decades. Three new finish collections have recently been introduced: Fashion (pastel green, yellow, light rose, gray blue); Architectural (matte black, light gray, dark gray); and Urban (dark platinum matte, dark brass matte, dark bronze matte). In the kitchen, dark stainless is trending. Dornbracht has developed a range of deeper metallic finishes, including dark mattes, that coordinate beautifully with dark stainless appliances.

Luxury knows no limits in a kitchen or bathroom outfitted by Dornbracht. Synonymous with quality and innovation, the German-run company is a leading producer of designer fittings and accessories, from crystal faucet handles to transcendental shower experiences. Governed by five principles— proportion, precision, progressiveness, personality and performance—Dornbracht’s products complement the experiential spaces of today. “Physical and mental balance are more important than ever before,” shares vice president of marketing Alexander Dornbracht. “Dornbracht LifeSpa, based on our experience with water and its positive effects, centers on temperature- and pressure-based therapies.” Technologically, Dornbracht is cutting-edge, but the company views it as a means, not an end. “For us, the role of technology is to make everyday tasks easier,” he says.
“Every kitchen needs a beautiful faucet that perfectly marries form and function. Our faucets are not just a functional item; they are works of art.”

Enter the custom kitchen of a gourmand, an acclaimed hostess and a novice chef, in turn, and you might expect the spaces to vastly differ from one another. Certainly, there may be efficient work spaces for the chef, grand kitchen islands for the entertainer and practical appliances for the inexperienced cook. But still, there are some elements every kitchen should have, regardless of lifestyle. So says Gail Drury, CMKBD, and President of Drury Design. “Steam ovens—everyone should have one,” she says. “And of course, everyone deserves high-quality cabinetry!” As the leader of the design team that has been crafting custom spaces and cabinetry for more than three decades, she would know. Arguably the lifeblood of an organized, design-minded space, cabinets add distinctive design, unlimited storage options, and if built well, longevity.
THE NEW MAINSTAYS Quartz counter surfaces. Exceptionally durable, with little maintenance required, this versatile material is becoming increasingly popular. Quartz can be manufactured in a nearly endless array of colors, grains and veins, giving homeowners unprecedented aesthetic flexibility for countertops. Generous storage. From overcounter storage in a bathroom to floor-to-ceiling storage in the kitchen, there are now rightful places for all of our possessions. Drury Design’s Gail Drury says customizable options make housing even the most cumbersome of objects possible. Digitized lighting. When beauty and convenience collide, it’s always a good thing. This especially holds true for interior lighting. Integrated lighting, which enables homeowners to control lights from anywhere with a smartphone or tablet, may warrant the wall switch obsolete in the near future.

There are two words designer and artist Jasmin Reese suggests adopting when endeavoring a new kitchen or bathroom: Go bold. “So many people who own homes hold themselves back because they think their future selves will not like their choice of bold tile or whimsical paper, or that it isn’t good for resale—but at the end of the day, they will only regret not treating themselves,” she says. “Whoever will buy the house will design it to their personal aesthetic and functionality.” Jewel tones, warm metals with bronze and gold, satin and nickel, statement lighting, vibrant vanities: there is no shortage of artistry and character in a Jasmin Reese-envisioned space. “I embrace a traditional design sensibility that is fresh and full of color,” she says.
“I see the open concept for kitchens staying for a while. It allows families to multitask while spending time together.”

LUXURY ON HAND From heated floors and a hand shower in the bathroom to smart appliances that allow you to preheat an oven from your phone, convenience is king in today’s well-designed spaces. “Restaurant-style offerings can now be seen in homes,” Talbot says. Steam ovens, built-in Miele coffee stations and pizza ovens— not to mention separate refrigerators and freezers—are just a few examples.

A collective truth about kitchens is that they will invariably become outdated in roughly 10 years—even the inspired white kitchen. The good news is that there are interior designers, like Jen Talbot, who encourage clients to create a space that is uniquely theirs, so that they absolutely love it. Balancing a fresh approach and classic elements, Talbot uses an out-of-thebox perspective to create curated, relaxed spaces. Emerging in design, Talbot notes, are deeper color palettes and warm tones in the kitchen. Gray kitchens remain popular and are great for those “who are not ready to take the plunge into a black or darker cabinet color.” As for mixing materials, Talbot advises to do so sparingly. “Do not go overboard on any one material; create a balance so it feels intentional.”

Interior designer Joey Leicht calls on his No. 1 rule for kitchen and bath design when approaching any new project. “First, we listen to how the client wants to use the space daily, and when entertaining; then we incorporate eye-catching luxury elements to enhance the aesthetic,” he says. The details are where Leicht shines, marrying sophistication with functionality to create striking visual narratives. When updating or renovating a kitchen or bath, he offers three easy ways to make a lasting impression: add wallcoverings for character and texture; resurface and/ or paint cabinetry; and introduce new hardware and lighting to enhance the effect. “Our goal is to design a lifestyle that invites homeowners to an unforgettable experience that leaves them with a delightful memory they will want to revisit time and again,” he says.
COLOR AND CUSTOMIZATION IN K+B DESIGN Blue. While we tend to work in monochromatic beige or gray schemes, we accessorize with trending colors and patterns that enhance what looks best on our client … reflecting their beauty within the home. We may do a small area, such as a powder room or butler’s pantry, in a blue hue, as these spaces can easily be changed whenever the mood strikes. Brass + Beyond. Clients are loving brass right now. We seem to be implementing brass elements in every installation. Our clients also love gadgets mixed with technology. The more gadgets and technology, the better. They’re also loving the ability to customize kitchen appliances, like choosing from a wide range of color options for a La Cornue range. The result is a piece of art within the kitchen that offers exceptional cooking.

Every detail, right down to a client’s handedness, is taken into consideration when Kelly Cleveland designs a custom kitchen. First, she establishes zones—prep, cook, serveware, dry goods and cleaning—so that the homeowners can move efficiently through the space. Serveware, for example, is located in cabinets between the dishwasher and dining table. “Every drawer and cabinet should be designated during the planning process, because the guts need to be fitted according to how it will be used. That is how a small kitchen can function as well (or sometimes better) than a palatial kitchen,” Cleveland explains. Bathrooms receive the same attention. From placing outlets in all cabinets to strategic positioning of lights and determining the right balance of storage, science proceeds art when creating high functionality in a home’s most treasured spaces.

To achieve the much-desired “mixed materials” look, Scott cites the power of three—color, material and texture used three times in a space—for a balanced look and feel. Open floor plans, another trend here to stay, have directed many of Scott’s renovation projects. The sleek, sinuous white tub has become the paragon for modern sophistication in the bathroom. Its uncomplicated, clean design conveys a sense of tranquility—precisely the desired effect in the room at home most dedicated to relaxation and renewal. PAA Baths USA is the manufacturer behind many of these striking bathtubs (and sinks), combining technology and handcraftsmanship to create products of elegance and comfort. “Our philosophy is not to overdesign, as we believe a bathroom is an intimate space that needs to be welcoming and toned-down,” says Peteris Freimanis, PAA’s director of marketing. Client selections and international trends reveal that neutral gray colors and matte and smooth surfaces are popular, however, Freimanis says that white bathtubs and sinks continue to dominate sales.
“PAA emphasizes and believes in a simple and understandably elegant bathroom, as well as honest and sustainable design.” 2
Today, bathroom design is the combination of synthetic and natural materials. Synthetic materials like SILKSTONE are increasingly implemented because they are easy to clean, durable and bring an element of modernity to a space. The natural elements, such as wood, add comfort and warmth. SILKSTONE is a natural composite material used for visually flawless sinks, bathtubs, tabletops and a rich array of other surfaces. “The bathroom is a relatively conservative space where avant-garde design is not the goal per se. The feeling and atmosphere are key. PAA fulfills this through our SILKSTONE material, which allows us to create something elegant and noble yet custom to the client,” Freimanis says.

COUNTER INTELLIGENCE A leader in its field, Ultimate Stone has its finger on the pulse of the natural stone and quartz industries. An interesting and quite surprising trend is the decrease in demand for quartz materials, which are known for their low maintenance. “We have seen a huge upswing in large-format porcelain slabs. We are one of the few companies that can accommodate the fabrication of them. The marble look is still popular, and white, taupe and gray are still the most favored,” Banasik says.

For Damian Banasik, owner of Ultimate Stone, there is one element in a kitchen that is an unequivocal must, regardless of style: amazing countertops. “Get something that is a conversation piece—that tells a story and doesn’t just disappear,” Banasik says. “Customizing countertops is just as important as the base molding, hardware and paint colors. Pay attention to this; don’t rush it,” he advises. Other surfaces in and around the kitchen should also be considered, such as fireplaces. Banasik and his team at Ultimate Stone work on an increasing amount of fireplaces that now coordinate directly with the kitchen. “Because of the open concept, fireplaces are now included and created as more of a statement. It’s been exciting implementing more colors and exotic materials as focal points.”

TRIAD POWER: GLASS, METAL + STONE Matte Glass. Our matte glass is velvety smooth and fingerprint-proof. The matte finish updates and softens the look of glass and provides depth and dimension to the chosen color. Warm Metal. We recently introduced new metal finishes to our collection, including copper, brass and titanium in natural and distressed finishes. These warm metals have been used as accents in some of our recent kitchens for dramatic effect.

Natural Stone. Our stone tops add a layer of texture to our kitchen designs. Most of our stones are finished with a flamed or leathered surface, making them the perfect counterpoint to our sleek glass.

Recently, technology has played a big role in the innovations at Valcucine Chicago. With the wave of a hand, the door of its new Logica Celata kitchen silently glides up and out of the way. Wave again, and the door closes, tidying the kitchen in an instant. “Our exclusive Italian product line specializes in modern, sustainable and innovative cabinetry with unique, sometimes patented features that are only available from Valcucine,” owner Robert Accarino says. “Although our cabinetry is minimalistic, our designs feature a mix of materials and textures for a warm, luxurious look.” Picture a subtle wood grain next to a sleek matte glass, accented by a warm metal topped with natural stone in a leathered finish. “Texture gives a material palette depth,” Accarino says, speaking to his high-tech kitchens that are as functional as they are beautiful.

t was all about playing with light and shadow,” says Joan Craig, of the Chicago pied-à-terre she designed for a Houston couple seeking an occasional escape from the Texas heat, “and how to bring a little sheen and sparkle and glimmer to spaces that had a lot of visual depth and darkness.” Craig didn’t have to look far for inspiration—the apartment is located in the Ritz-Carlton Residences on the city’s Magnificent Mile, overlooking Lake Michigan. She had always admired the Beaux Arts-meets-Art Deco style of the 1920s architect Philip Maher, who designed the Ritz and the nearby Woman’s Athletic Club. Fortunately for Craig, her clients—a businessman and an equestrian— were all for bringing the drama. “The husband was the most involved in the project, and he is an engineer by training, so he’s very engaged and interested in how things work,” notes Craig. “He has a strong sense of design and fashion and really enjoys being part of the conversation.” Most notably, he expressed a passion for wallcoverings, which developed as he traveled the world for work, discovering how rich patterns and textures had the power to transform a space. “He’s crazy about wallcoverings,” says the designer. “And not just in areas where one might expect to find them. He pushed us to use them in ways we never had before.” In the living room, for example, the client suggested “punching up” the look by finding one to use on the ceiling. This was uncharted territory for Craig and her team, who ultimately chose a chunky grass cloth with a metallic glaze. “I was nervous it would be too glitzy, but it ended up being

perfect,” she notes. “When you walk in, you feel the glow and the energy of the city, but in a really soft way. The city almost levitates over the room.” Breaking up the glamour is a giant photograph of a buffalo by Simen Johan, which holds a place of prominence along one wall of the room. The client found the piece mid-construction and a complete redesign of the millwork was required in order to accommodate it, a challenge that Craig, who worked with builder Matthew Ehrhard, of Hewitt Horn, Inc., welcomed. “We were excited to bring a little Texas attitude to Chicago,” she says. To play off the light-filled living area, Craig decided to go dark in the dining room. “The high-contrast palette was our way of putting a contemporary spin on the Deco theme. We didn’t want to be too literal in terms of forms and profiles from that era,” she says, referring to the mostly sleek, modern lines of the furniture in the apartment, much of which is covered in luxe fabrics by Holly Hunt and Donghia. For the dining room walls, Craig opted for an inky bamboo-print wallpaper by de Gournay, which she had coveted for years but never had the opportunity to use. “I loved that paper and really wanted to do a dark room with a little bit of metallic so at night you’d have lighting picking up glints of leaves,” she explains. “I’ve had that on my bucket list of things I wanted to bring to life at some point and was thrilled when our client agreed to use it.” A pearlescent Donghia fabric treatment on the ceiling, as well as a crystal chandelier and metallic Roman blinds, make the room feel luminous both day and night. Meanwhile, another wallpaper holds more personal significance for Craig. In the guest room, the lush handpainted willow tree wallpaper, also by de Gournay, is a nod to her childhood. “When I was a kid, we had a willow tree with leaves that went all the way down to the ground,” she recalls. “I called the space under the leaves ‘the beauty saloon’—I didn’t know the word for salon—and one afternoon I invited all the neighborhood kids into the ‘saloon’ and cut their hair. I got into major trouble, but I’ve had a thing for willows ever since.” Completing the jewel-box effect are the apartment’s light fixtures, which Craig conceived with custom lighting designer Mark Figueredo. In the hallway, a row of pendants refracts light, casting shadows on the ceiling and walls. A show-stopping chandelier shimmers in the living area, which, in spite of its nod to Texas, ultimately feels like a love letter to Chicago. “When you enter the room and look outside, the lake is dark, dark, dark, and the city lights pop,” Craig says. “I wanted to bring that feeling of the skyline into this room. It’s pretty magical.”
A custom hand-painted de Gournay wallcovering featuring a willow tree design on metallic leaf paper makes a shimmering statement in the guest bedroom. It was inspired by a childhood memory of Joan Craig, who designed the home.

The client’s passion for wallcoverings drove the decision to install a metallic grass cloth by Phillip Jeffries on the ceiling, a risk Craig had never taken before. The sparkle makes the east-facing room “glow in the morning light, the designer notes. A custom Holly Hunt sofa upholstered in a Holland & Sherry velvet and a silkwool rug by Tai Ping add texture.

Opposite: During the renovation the clients acquired a large Simen Johan digital chromogenic print of a buffalo, so the team incorporated it into the design of the living room millwork. “The piece brings a little bit of Texas to Michigan Avenue, remarks Craig. Below: A hand-painted silk wallpaper by de Gournay set off by a custom Murano chandelier creates a darkly glamorous tone in the dining room, which also features a Jean de Merry table and Mattaliano chairs covered in an Edelman leather.
Pops of sheen and color define the guest room, which hosts a bed dressed in Matouk linens with decorative pillows covered in a Jim Thompson fabric and an ebonized-walnut bedside table by Jasper by Michael S. Smith.
A wallcovering by Callidus Guild, a hammered nickel sink and polished nickel fittings by Waterworks, and custom sconces by Mark Figueredo Studio maintain the drama in the powder room.

City views are on full display when relaxing in the custom leather bed in the master bedroom. Once again wallcoverings played an important role, this time adding warmth with Dedar fabric from Holly Hunt.

O
n any given day, countless mental snapshots are whirling around in Puerto- Rican-American artist Candida Alvarez’s head: an unusual hue, an intriguing sound or word, the shadow play through her kitchen window, her mother’s Bible. “I find images in the everyday world,” the painter explains of her vibrant work. “I love patterns and colors and finding things in nature. It’s the space in between that creates a ground for painting in many ways.” How she translates these impressions, often depicted in effervescent fragments, is “kind of a mysterious process,” she muses. “I’m always experimenting, and I love that. It’s the mystery of where the painting is going to end up.” Her tools are just as varied, vacillating between acrylic, enamels, colored pencils on surfaces like linen and vellum paper, and photo collage. But really, she says, any medium is fair game. “When I get my hands on new materials, it stretches me—I love to experiment and I love things that are just surprisingly interesting.” If there’s one constant in her work, it’s ebullient color, which Alvarez admits will usually reflect her mood or location at the time she’s creating a work. “I notice light wherever I go, so my palette changes—it’s very different in California than it is in Chicago or Puerto Rico. Although it doesn’t even have to be where I am geographically, but rather where my eyes, my head and my heart are at that moment.” And while the titles of her works are often evocative, she cautions not to read too much into them. “I really do love words, so sometimes the titles have nothing to do with the painting
and other times they have everything to do with them.” (For the record, she was actually listening to Haruki Murakami while taking in a sunset, as that particular painting’s title suggests.) After a career spanning decades, Alvarez’s irreverent art has finally made its way onto the bigger stage it deserves. In 2017, Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo hand-picked several of Alvarez’s works to use as prints in a menswear collection. That same year, she had her first major exhibition, “Candida Alvarez: Here,” at the Chicago Cultural Center, which will be showcased in a book later this year. For Alvarez, who has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for the past 20 years, it’s now time for a reset. Having recently commenced a one-year sabbatical, she anticipates spending more time traveling, reading and writing, but also delving further into her artistic experiments. “It’s time for me to give myself more attention—the gift of just sitting in the studio, without rushing the next day to teach,” she says. “And I hope my work evolves. It always follows me along, or I follow it along. We’re constant buddies.”
“I NOTICE LIGHT WHEREVER I GO, SO MY PALETTE CHANGES—IT’S VERY DIFFERENT IN CALIFORNIA THAN IT IS IN CHICAGO OR PUERTO RICO.”

W
hen you’re no stranger to business travel, coming home is a vacation unto itself. Which is why a Wisconsin businessman and his wife asked designer Kimberly Knight and architect John Vetter to design a family abode that leaves no desire for them or their children to go anywhere else. “He didn’t want a weekend house,” explains Knight. “He said, ‘I want this to be my weekend home—my getaway, my lake house.’ ” Knight and Vetter were tapped to create a casual, comfortable yet elegant space, from soup to nuts. Knight was tasked with selecting every interior detail from the furniture and finishes down to the towels and bed linens.
“He is a high-level executive and understands how to put together a project,” says the designer of the freedom they were given by the husband. “He had the right team in place and he decided to go for it.” Taking inspiration from the simple farmsteads that dot the Wisconsin countryside, Vetter, working with builder Bruce Nordgren, conceived a sprawling home clad with dark-stained vertical cypress siding accented by a series of flat and gabled metal rooflines. “The building blurs itself,” says Vetter of the multiwing house, which flows seamlessly between indoors and out through the use of landscape walls, pavilions and outbuildings. A black stone walkway meanders through the front entry and out to the pool courtyard, and
A custom oak dining table, Verellen chairs covered in Perennials fabric and whimsical hand-blown glass globes from Cisco Brothers make for a relaxed vibe in the dining area.

A three-panel door links the breakfast area and covered outdoor dining room, and the spaces share a cedar plank ceiling “for a seamless indoor-outdoor feeling, Knight says. A teak-and-concrete dining table from Clubcu and Palecek teak-and-rope chairs provide just the right place to enjoy some barbecue after a dip in the pool.
“I conceived the study as a grown-up getaway, says Knight. She layered texture with browns and blacks using a leather Ashbury Hides wallcovering, an Eames lounge chair and ottoman, and a Graham Harmon painting. The result is a classic masculine space within which a glass of whiskey is meant to be enjoyed.

the rift sawn oak ceilings in the entry likewise breach the home’s envelope, further integrating indoors with out. The relaxing milieu is also a hallmark of the interior, where the foyer’s 8-foot ceiling makes the peaked ceiling in the neighboring great room feel even more airy by comparison—“a feeling of uplift,” is how Vetter describes it. A skylight over the floor-to-ceiling limestone chimney enhances the effect. At the far end of the room, the open kitchen maintains a low profile, with the refrigerator concealed behind white oak panels. Instead of the large stainless steel hood the owner envisioned, Knight convinced him to go with a subtler plaster one that complements the quartzite countertop and backsplash. The designer also took great care to arrange a comfy living area, incorporating plush furnishings in front of the stone fireplace. Selecting such pieces without her client’s input was one of the most difficult parts of the project. She recruited the tallest men she could find to
stand in for her 6-foot-4-inch client, rating furnishings for comfort before she placed any orders, noting, “What’s comfortable for me is not necessarily comfortable for somebody who’s a foot taller than me.” In the open dining area, hand-blown glass pendants illuminate a custom solid wood dining table so heavy four people were needed to carry it inside. “You could absolutely dance on this table!” Knight exclaims. Stylish and practical, the chairs are slipcovered in a durable indoor-outdoor fabric selected with the kids in mind. The children were not a factor in the husband’s office, however, where handsome custom cabinetry is stained to match leather-covered walls. A black desk plays off the dark windows, coordinating with the black Eames lounge chair and a midcentury modern abstract artwork by Graham Harmon. Even though it’s a work space, it feels serene. And, Knight observes, “When you walk in this room, the smell of leather is amazing.”
In the office area of the study, a black minimalist desk by Jacob Marks from Skram and a vintage Knoll executive chair from Pegboard Modern comprise a sophisticated work space.
The master bedroom was meant to evoke a “deep exhale upon entering, says Knight. She incorporated shades of silvery blue using Phillip Jeffries sateen fabric wallcovering, a mohair bed fabricated by Lancaster Custom Crafted Upholstery, Parachute bed linens and decorative shams in Holland & Sherry fabric.
Below, left: White oak shelving in the bedroom showcases treasured objects such as vintage pottery, a natural coral sliced geode and a ceramic antler table lamp by Jason Miller. The owners often gather under the pergola at the end of the infinity-edge swimming pool by Neuman Pools, which is enhanced with trees and shrubs selected by Vetter and installed by Nic Ehr Landscape, Co. Inc.
For this family, relaxation is about being together. So the design team created several lively entertainment spaces. On the lower level, a sectional sofa anchors a seating area in front of the limestone fireplace, which floats in the center of the room. On the other side of the fireplace, steel-framed windows enclose a climate-controlled wine room furnished with wool-and-leather club chairs atop a hair-on-hide rug. And the main living areas open to an outdoor kitchen and dining area. Nylon rope chairs surround a long table with a concrete top in the dining area. And teak lounge chairs with plush tailored cushions offer a relaxing spot from which to look out over the infinity-edge swimming pool. “It’s definitely the place to be,” Knight says. Indeed, being here feels very much like being on vacation— just what the owners had in mind. At the culmination of the nearly two-year construction project, Knight staged the entire house. And then, on a Friday night, came the big reveal: “They were just floored,” she says. “I really think we hit it.” “We created something that elevated, enhanced and enriched their life,” Vetter adds. “That’s the best thing you can get from a project.”

“We strive for our interiors to have meaning, and one of the ways that is accomplished is by knowing what our clients love and have a history with,” says interior designer Ray Booth, noting how, for the salon, his team worked with the clients’ own rug and John Saladino sofa, which they refreshed in Kravet fabric. A 19th-century Tuscan chandelier from New Orleans dealer Kevin Stone Antiques communes with a painting by Indian artist Sayed Haider Raza.
T
he suburbs aren’t for everyone. That’s particularly true of a couple who already had their pleasant, in-bed-at-a-respectable-hour pace in the rearview mirror when they called the revered design firm McAlpine a second time. Fifteen years ago, architect Greg Tankersley created the clients’ first custom-built home. Together with Bobby McAlpine and general contractor John Morgan, he stewarded the process again when the conversation turned to a desirable street in Lincoln Park where some of the city’s most notable families have fashioned their ample architectural legacies with all the subtlety of a tiara. “We wanted to come up with something understated because we realized it was a loud cocktail party that we were invited to,” says Tankersley. “I’ve always thought the quietest person in the room has the most to say, so I wanted to design a home that was very elegant and could respect the street front and step back from it.” The structure—a stucco, two-toned body with dramatic windows and a garage that’s out of view—was exactly the kind of quiet riot the neighborhood never saw coming. It’s a tailored, unconventional “little embassy” of a home with classic bona fides and big gestures rendered with ease. Take the bifold shutters, for example—a frequent feature on buildings in Paris and something Tankersley has always wanted to use. In an unexpected move by the architect, instead of black, they were painted the same neutral exterior shade. “I think anytime you do something grand you have to apologize for it,” he says. “You have to have great stature, then great humility.”

Opposite: Formal but not imposing, the salon can host a party of two as easily as it can manage a full house. Booth and his colleague John Anderson arranged areas for conversation and repose throughout. The Niermann Weeks table has a glamorous look, while the Powell & Bonnell portico lantern from Dennis Miller Associates is a nod to tradition. Below: Art makes an impression at every turn. Passing to the dining room is an elegant experience thanks to the pair of Paul Ferrante benches and Christopher Guy sconces holding court.

Ochre’s Artic Pear chandelier introduces glamour to the luminous dining area. The dining chairs and stools are upholstered in Donghia fabric. A vivid blue painting by contemporary Indian artist Manjunath Kamath is a spectacular eye-catcher.
The interiors follow that mantra, courtesy of interior designers Ray Booth and John Anderson. The clients collect Indian and Asian art and are active patrons in the community—the husband sits on the board of trustees at The Art Institute of Chicago. But the space doesn’t indulge in the solemnity of Important Art. “I may have a chair in front of an antiquity or partially obscuring a painting, and I’ve had more serious collectors comment on that,” explains the wife. “I push back and say, ‘No, this is a house, and that is a really comfortable chair in a fabulously sunny spot that’s as important as the painting.’ So, it’s a way of incorporating the art into your life rather than being owned by the art.” Consider the dining area. The luminous space features art and furniture arranged to convey an admirable nonchalance. “We believe that furnishings should not necessarily limit the function of any particular space,” says Booth. “It’s always guaranteed to be a dead room if there aren’t opportunities to lounge or interact, have a cocktail or enjoy a meal layered into these spaces.” The clients have an antique Nepalese cabinet, “a museum-quality piece that’s just stunning and jewel-encrusted, so we put that on a plinth to show it off,” notes Anderson. It’s beautiful but not attention-seeking, much like the two Japanese screens in the kitchen. Rare is the client who digs that idea, but there they are—illuminated by sleek picture lights and poised casually in front of cool marble slabs in a kitchen that makes the caterer flip. The salon is a gracious space in the front of the house with barrel-vaulted ceilings, columns, fireplaces at each end and limestone floors—deliberately selected to expand the visual experience. In the wrong hands, the space could feel aloof. But the team’s plan was to give the clients a home they could live in fully, either alone or with guests. “It was a lesson in editing and context because these pieces already existed, so it was about how to use them to best service the greater aesthetic of the house,” says Booth. He and Anderson reinvigorated John Saladino sofas and Nancy Corzine seating—and just about every other piece—with new upholstery, arranging brilliant, layered spots for gathering. The effect is sophisticated but easy, with no risk of becoming a social outcast should one forget to use a coaster.
The homeowners spend a lot of time in the master sitting room, where the Glant-upholstered wing chair and ottoman from McAlpine Home by Lee Industries offer a cozy spot by the fireplace. Silk draperies made in India add another layer of luxury.
Upstairs, a serene seating area in the master suite took its cues from a beloved rug—the circular Praneet Soi work arrived later, perfectly in sync with the palette. A scaled upholstered screen ensconces the bed, which floats in the center of the room “This screen becomes a gathering device something like a wall; it reaches out its arms and kind of holds the bed and the nightstands and huddles everything close together, giving it a sense of focus in the room,” explains Booth. The hand-painted commission was from an artist in Northern India that the wife personally sought out. “The screen is a very foreign concept in India; it’s not a traditional
piece of furniture. I had to explain what it was,” she says. “Once he got it, he executed it perfectly.” And in a truly progressive act of marital accord, she kindly allowed her husband the larger closet, as his fashion habit surpasses her own. That’s not a surprise to Booth. “There was a graciousness and encouragement from the get-go,” he says of working with the couple. “We would go out to great meals with them and certainly we would talk about the house during the day, but it was kind of funny because whenever we got to dinner, it was like the house was not to be discussed…we were really getting to know each other. And that just speaks to the grace of this particular couple.”
The orientation of the master bedroom meant the Lee Industries bed could only be placed in one particular spot. The designers created an elegant custom screen to ground the space and provided a curvaceous response to that linear form with the Deneuve chandelier, a hand-forged iron work from Gregorius Pineo.

Opposite: The team decided early on to place the garage away from street view. Not only did this create a more aesthetically pleasing experience, it provided the opportunity “to create a little courtyard which, in terms of urban real estate, is just totally decadent,” says architect Greg Tankersley. Left: Landscape architect Scott Byron dressed the courtyard, a charming but not enormous space. When the clients host a get-together, the area provides additional room for guests and contributes to a natural flow. “To me, any good social house always has a circulation where you can do figure-eights around everything,” says Tankersley.
