POP OF COLOR
Micah Tipler, founder of TIPLER Design, is a true believer in embracing color in the kitchen. With DacorMatch, the innovative color system introduced by leading luxury appliance brand, Dacor, you can personalize your appliances in any pantone imaginable. Show your true colors. All of them.

Micah Tipler PRINCIPAL, TIPLER DESIGN Houston, TX
H
ouston based interior designer and Dacor Design Council member, Micah Tipler, is a force in the design, architecture, procurement, showroom, development, and build industries. Her “outside of the box approach has earned her status as an industry leader, and she is applauded for the design risks she takes, including her creative use of color in kitchen projects.

“What excites my design team and our clients about DacorMatch is the capability to truly customize something.” DacorMatch allows designers and their clients to customize the kitchen like never before. “Everyone uses their kitchen in a slightly different way. Being able to tailor it to fit all of our clients’ needs has become critical to the design process,” Tipler says. The DacorMatch Color System makes it possible to paint Heritage wall ovens and ranges in any color on the spectrum. “We’ve done ranges in subdued colors, from pearl white to navy blue. But we’ve also designed fun ovens in teal, fuchsia and orange, making something really unique and special,” she shares. The process is simple. By providing Dacor with your selected color swatch, the team will match it exactly, delivering a custom appliance fit to your taste. Tipler shares from experience: “Once we’ve established a color palette for a particular project, we determine an accent color that speaks to the client. Then, we provide Dacor with a pantone number, and the team creates a sample to send us for approval. It’s been a match every time.” In addition, Dacor offers seven standard colors to choose from. “DacorMatch is truly limitless, which as a designer, is hugely exciting,” Tipler says. “Being able to specify a personalized appliance for our clients that we know they’ll enjoy with their families for years is game-changing.” From start to finish, DacorMatch appliances take six to seven weeks. Warming Drawer in DacorMatch upon special request only.

EDITOR’S LETTER
Designers are increasingly seeking out bespoke pieces for their clients, such as this bold wall treatment by MJ Atelier (right).
Welcome to our annual Luxury Report issue dedicated to luxury in all its forms and iterations. To prepare for this issue, our editors reached out to designer-friends to ask, “How do you define luxury?” It’s interesting to read their responses. Certainly, it’s not about extravagance or price. For many, it’s about comfort, calm and a sense of peace in an otherwise noisy and somewhat chaotic world. Luxury is most definitely about anything that is made with great care and an attention to detail. I think it’s also about originality, which seems to be rarer to find these days. Most anything that’s elusive or slightly out of reach can be perceived as luxurious. Of course, time is the ultimate luxury: The idea of waiting for something to be made, (while we’re all programmed for instant gratification these days) seems sumptuous. I can relate to Ken Fulk’s response—that luxury is about the little things, like the scent of fresh-clipped flowers or an unplanned Sunday spent on the sofa. Can’t count how many weekends I’ve fallen into a nap on my red English roll arm, with a paperback novel atop my lap and my two Shih Tzu’s curled up beside me. Heaven!

Fashion designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” With customization on the rise, many designers could apply the sentiment to homes outfitted with bespoke elements—including Achille Salvagni, principal of his eponymous international architectural and design practice. “In the last 10 years, my clientele has increasingly sought out homes that are oneof-a-kind,” he says. “In many ways, looking for a designer is like looking for a tailor that can make a dress that fits your body perfectly.” He cites a client who recently hired him to create a highly custom home in Mumbai, India. “She wanted a living room that was a portrait of her family,” he explains. “After interviewing

the family members, I created furniture that represents the qualities of each. A sofa embodies the personality of the father, the table is inspired by the daughter—together, all the furniture tells this family’s story.” Maria Apelo Cruz, who co-founded the decorative arts studio MJ Atelier with her husband Mike Jovanovic, also sees an increase in customers seeking one-off wallcoverings, furnishings and lighting. “We are riding the wave of designers who want to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Today’s clients are looking for conversation pieces that no one else has.” An example is the wallcovering they made for an inveterate video gamer that includes symbology from classics including Zelda, Pac-Man and Pokémon.
Cruz says that bringing a designer’s creations to life requires finding the right craftspeople, and that’s challenging. “Many aspects of quality craftsmanship take a lifetime to master—so by the time you’ve perfected your trade, it’s time to retire,” she says. “Traditionally, a lot of information was passed down through families, but these days, some of the offspring of contemporary craftspeople are pursuing other things.” To keep those skills alive, she and her husband have started

personal aspect that makes the effort and expenditure worth it. The company offers their products in bespoke sizes, colors and fabrics. “Every person has a different idea about what makes the perfect design elements. What could be better than picking your own fabrics in the color combination to make something just for you? Customization is the ultimate expression of luxury.”
Custom designs take the form of personalized wall treatments, such as the one shown on the previous page by MJ Atelier. a teaching guild—and to the couple’s delight, they are discovering an eager audience. “The stereotype of a millennial is a person staring at a computer screen,” Cruz says. “But we’ve found many young people who want to learn how to paint, draw and gild.” That’s not to say there’s no place for computer screens in today’s customization climate. In fact, technology is facilitating even higher levels of tailored details. “These days, we have old-world techniques and modern tools living together—you’ll find an anvil next to computer-driven cutting equipment,” says Paul Verbecky, the general manager at Hammerton Custom. “Computer modeling is enabling us to do things we couldn’t have imagined in the past—we recently created a model showing a 6,000-pound fixture that’s 25 feet at its widest point. It’s the easiest and fastest way to show how a piece like that would look in a space.” But custom design takes longer and is more expensive to produce—so why are more consumers seeking it out? George Matouk, Jr., CEO and president of the linen company that bears his family’s name, believes it’s the

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN TEAMS UP WITH PERENNIALS TO CREATE FABRICS AND RUGS THAT WORK INDOORS AND OUT. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON
Timothy Corrigan is a self-proclaimed “Perennials freak.” With the debut of his new seven-fabric, three-rug collection, Perennials by Timothy Corrigan, the celebrated designer has put his own stamp on the high-performance fabric company’s “rugged yet beautiful” ideology. Luxe got the scoop on this exciting collaboration and why indoor-outdoor textiles are the future of design. You are crazy about high-performance fabrics. I’ve been using performance textiles for years— back when they were still ugly striped canvases! I realized early on, if you don’t have to worry about how you’re living in a house then it makes such a difference. I know some people who won’t let anyone drink red wine in their home, and I hate everything about that! When it is a “look but don’t touch” zone, then you’re not comfortable, your family isn’t comfortable and your guests aren’t comfortable. And the appeal of Perennials? It’s a gamechanger. Not all performance fabrics are created equal, and Perennials is kind of fanatical with how its fabrics perform. Also, the rugs feel like the
finest wool or silk. The company’s beautiful, soft carpet is stain-proof, which is exactly what people want. Customers want beauty and practicality. What was the spark for your collection? I have offices in Paris and Los Angeles, so my aesthetic is very much European-inspired, but through a casual California filter. In this collection there’s a fabric that is almost like an Italian tapestry, which is called Go for Baroque. There are also chinoiserie options, one which is inspired by a Chinese wallpaper and another that is reminiscent of an 18th-century interpretation of a French chinoiserie. You skew traditional, while Perennials leans contemporary. This was a real leap for Perennials. Ann Sutherland, who started the company, isn’t naturally drawn to the warmer colors and classical styles that I use but she said, “That’s why we need you!” I told her, “This is not going to be in your comfort zone. Be ready for it.” What’s in the crystal ball for performance fabrics? It’s important to see these fabrics as

something to be used indoors and figuring out how more products can be performance based. We’ll also see an expansion into materials like wood finishes with marine varnish so people don’t have to worry about putting down a glass. The future of design is influenced by consumers who are not willing to make the trade-off between performance and beauty.

THE LATEST TABLETOP FINDS ADD A TOUCH OF ARTFUL LIVING TO THE EVERYDAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
This season’s spirited tabletop selections are making it easy to transform everyday place settings into luxurious works of art. Each piece offers a creative expression while also evoking a bold sense of time and place. Consider Buccellati’s Doge collection, which inspirits its Italian craftmanship and pays homage to the splendors of Venetian art with hand-hammered and chiseled silver enhanced with malachite, lapis and red jasper. Closer to home, Michelle Blade looked to her Pacific Northwestern roots for her ceramic Garden Series. Molly Hatch’s Always Collection brings a modern and playful twist to a traditional 18th-century European surface pattern, and Luke Edward Hall’s collaboration with Richard Ginori is based on his love of Greco-Roman mythology. And finally, James Peter Henry morphed his public art installation at TableArt into a limited-edition collection that celebrates “the complexity of a human journey in a possible fourth-dimensional state.”

DWELL GATHER BE: DESIGN FOR MOMENTS
WRITTEN BY NINA KORMAN
Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, owners of the ultra-successful furniture company that bears their name, are in a car, speeding through rural North Carolina on a weekday morning. Moving forward quickly is an apt metaphor for their business, which is now celebrating its 30 th anniversary. Gold and Williams initially founded a factory in Taylorsville to ensure superior, American-made products, then proceeded to take care of their now 900-plus employees by establishing on-site day care, a gym, a health center and a café. Their progressive policies rocked the furniture industry, and their products—vintage-style leather club chairs and seating slipcovered in casual fabrics—did too. The duo spoke with Luxe about their time in the industry. mgbwhome.com How does 30 feel? MG: Weird and interesting and great. We just hired a CEO, Allison O’Connor, to spearhead things, nurture our team and position us for even bigger and better growth in the future. Greatest lesson learned while in business? BW: Follow your gut. If you don’t have that really deep feeling about something, it may not be quite perfect. So many people let others get in their minds or talk them out of stuff, then things go kind of haywire. Proudest accomplishment as a company? BW: Day care. We started it 22 years ago. Since then we’ve had about 70 kids there all the time. You get to see them grow up. What’s next? MG: A whole new take on leather club chairs in exciting colors, like leaf green, deep red and peacock blue (shown). Some of the silhouettes are classic modern while others have a very new traditional look. 114 / luxesource.com
MEETLVTD the MAKER DESIGN LVTD Design founder Evan Jones started his design-build studio in 2012, in the midst of Denver’s independent-restaurant boom. First, the owner of Humble Pie restaurant visited Jones’ 1890 Victorian home—which Jones had tricked out with handmade details—and asked him to build the furniture for her eatery. One of her friends asked Jones to do the same for his gastropub, then Old Major restaurant commissioned light fixtures, and suddenly, Jones had a new day job. Each LVTD (pronounced “elevated”) piece has a style Jones describes as modern-rustic. “I love midcentury modern, but we try to give it a little more texture and character,” he says. That individuality comes from reclaimed wood paired with materials including steel, quartz, glass and brass. In addition to custom furniture, lighting and installation elements, LVTD (now a team of five) recently began selling original designs at Fetch Shop in the Dairy Block and offers several popular designs online. lvtddesign.com WRITTEN BY CHRISTINE DEORIO

Hygge. It’s a feeling that comes naturally to the Danes, who created the word to mean coziness and contentment. In America, however, we could use a little help, which Alexandra Gove offers in Dwell Gather Be: Design for Moments, published this September by Blue Star Press. Using personal stories, practical tips and photos of feel-good homes, Gove—who runs the über-cozy Vail Valley lifestyle boutique and online store Hygge Life with her husband, Koen van Renswoude—shares how to bring a sense of hygge to every aspect of home life. “Dwell is about designing a space where you can rest, rejuvenate and seek comfort,” she explains. “Gather is about creating an environment that facilitates good, deep connections with guests. And Be is about taking care of yourself in a way that allows you to fully enjoy those moments.” What it’s not about: “Creating perfect interiors,” Gove says. “The idea is that you should design your home to facilitate the moments you treasure.” bluestarpress.com

THE INSIDER CHARLES CUNNIFFE
Since launching his firm in 1981, architect Charles Cunniffe and his team have completed a variety of projects around the world, from custom homes to a LEED Goldand WELL-certified police station to affordable housing projects in Telluride, Snowmass and Aspen, where Charles Cunniffe Architects is based. What’s the common thread? “Clients who are interested in sustainability and legacy in terms of building something properly the first time,” Cunniffe says. “A lot of projects look great in photographs, but the difference is in the details—the way the light comes through, the connection to the outdoors, and the spirit of place a building evokes when you’re actually in it. Any project that brings those things into play is what we gravitate to.” Here, the architect shares three Colorado buildings that meet those high standards. cunniffe.com
ASPEN CHAPEL “As you come into Aspen, you’ll notice this chapel’s beautiful stone steeple. The building, which was designed by architect George Edward Heneghan, Jr., is so well placed; it sets a tone of peace and spirituality for the community. It’s not overstated—the materials are stone and wood—but it is very well proportioned and unique in its spiritual expression in the context of Aspen, where the essence of spirituality is in the environment. It’s just something that strikes you and makes you reflect on where you are and why.” aspenchapel.org

ASPEN MEADOWS RESORT “No matter how long I live here and explore the environs around Aspen, going to the Meadows campus (home to the Aspen Institute) will always be a unique experience. In the 1950s the founder, Walter Paepcke, brought in Herbert Bayer, a Bauhaus architect, to design a series of buildings here. It led to the blossoming of midcentury modern work in Aspen—and is exemplary of really well-executed and honest architecture. The grounds are quite sculptural and create a sense of place that is uniquely captivating. If you look at the resort’s Anderson Park from the sky, it’s another Herbert Bayer work of art.” aspenmeadows.com
COLORADO STATE CAPITOL BUILDING “To me, this is not only a significant building at the state level, but one of the more remarkable capitol buildings in the country. It was amazing architecture in its day and quite evolved in terms of the technology that was available at the time, from the size of the dome plated in real gold (shown), to the spire, to all the backof-house functions. It was also the first state capitol building to be LEED certified, and I think it’s really interesting to have a capitol building that represents sustainable values.” colorado.gov/capitol

Calli Nicoletti has always had a fascination with product curation—one so strong that, years ago, she created a spreadsheet to track her favorite new items. So, by the time she opened Miller Lane Mercantile, a lifestyle boutique in Northwest Denver’s Tennyson Street shopping district, she had hundreds of brands to curate from. “Since the beginning, my buying philosophy has been that if it isn’t something I either already own or want in my own home, I don’t bring it in,” she explains. From tableware that encourages gathering with friends to bath products made for a night of self-care, Nicoletti’s selections are made with “slow living” in mind. “To me, slow living is quite literally about slowing down,” she explains. “I feel strongly that the days are endlessly more enjoyable when you make thoughtful choices about the items you surround yourself with.” Nicoletti took the same approach to designing her shop—a bright, breezy space that nods to her East Coast beach-bum roots. A local craftsman built the 16-foot-long walnut shelving piece that displays a collection of pottery and kitchenware, and Nicoletti found an antique workman’s table to accommodate more handmade and small-batch finds—most from womanowned businesses—ranging from jewelry and leather goods to foodstuffs and home accessories. “Beautiful products speak for themselves, yes,” she says, “but it’s the sum of pulling everything together and telling a visual story that’s most exciting to me.” millerlanemercantile.com

GALLERY CHAT Visitors to the Aspen Art Museum are inevitably struck by two things: the Shigeru Ban–designed building’s woven-wood façade and the timely exhibitions. Here’s what to look for this autumn.
ERIKA VERZUTTI, “VENUS YOGINI,” ⊲
▲ RASHID JOHNSON, “THE HIKERS,” through November 3
Some artists mine inspiration from a single source. Artist Rashid Johnson finds it everywhere, from music and literature to history and culture. What he does with that inspiration is equally varied. The Chicago-born artist uses sculpture, painting, drawing, collage, filmmaking, choreography and performance to explore themes from art history to individual and shared cultural identities. This solo exhibition—a joint effort with Mexico City’s Museo Tamayo—encapsulates this diversity by presenting existing and recent works, including a commissioned installation that incorporates live video and performance, featuring Johnson’s first choreographic work involving ballet and modern movement—a collaboration with New Yorkbased choreographer Claudia Schreier.
⊳ ETEL ADNAN,
“EACH DAY IS A WHOLE WORLD,” through October 6
Coloradans who love their mountains will find a kindred spirit in Beirut-born Etel Adnan: In the 1970s, the artist, essayist and poet moved to San Francisco, where she was captivated by Mount Tamalpais. Since then, it has been a means of exploring how landscapes shape humans’ perceptions of their place in the world. This exhibition brings together small-format oil paintings and woven tapestries that distill landscapes into their simplest, defining forms: strong lines and abstract shapes rendered in vibrant colors.
⊳ JOHN ARMLEDER, through October 27
118 / LUXESOURCE.COM
The Swiss artist’s work encompasses performance, design, sculpture and painting, but this exhibition celebrates John Armleder’s “Pour Paintings” and “Puddle Paintings” series. To create the former, the artist applies a rainbow of paints and lacquers to the tops of large canvases, allowing the colors to drip down and mingle. The result: striking vertical bands of color that appear at once orderly and disorderly, intentional and experimental. For the latter, Armleder places canvases on his studio floor before applying saturated colors in more chaotic pools.

through October 6
Give one of Erika Verzutti’s texture-rich sculptures a cursory glance, and your eye will likely pick up on some familiar forms: a pumpkin, a raspberry. But look more closely and you’ll see some similarities to the human form—even a bit of personality, perhaps. That’s intentional, of course, and what makes these works so much fun. For the museum’s Crown Commons, the São Paulo–based artist has created a large-scale bronze Venus, an extension of her smaller sculptures in which renditions of ripe fruits— some finished in otherworldly hues—are stacked just so to depict the goddess of love and fertility.

MAIN Located on one of Colorado’s oldest homesteads, this nearly Net-Zero Energy, passive solar house features walls of glass, a massive deck and an incredible connection to the landscape. Set at an elevation of 9,000 feet, it had to be built robustly to withstand the elements. TOP This 3,000-square-foot warm, modern home is certified LEED Platinum and is nearly a Net-Zero Energy building. It boasts a passive solar design and expansive views for the best of indoor-outdoor living. BOTTOM Rodwin, David and their team took a dilapidated 1980s house and transformed it into a modern, passive solar home that captures amazing mountain views and is surrounded by decks from which to view them. Rich, low-maintenance materials were used throughout the 4,200-square-foot gut remodel and addition.

“WE DESIGN AND BUILD TESLAS.” At RA/SC, sustainable design has been a fundamental tenet since its inception. “A deep green home doesn’t have to compromise on beauty or functionality,” says Rodwin, as evidenced by the gorgeous LEED Platinum and Net-Zero Energy homes on its website. Their homes also provide clients with excellent indoor-air quality, low water bills and durable, high-quality finishes. “At the end of the day, we earn our client’s trust by making the entire process seamless and fun, from the design vision to the day we hand them the key,” adds David.

INTO the BLUE ONCE OVERLOOKED KITCHEN STORAGE SPACES ARE REINVENTED WITH RICH, JUICY COLOR. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

“I love using bold color in a room that feels unexpected,” explains Houston-based designer Lauren Haskett of this sophisticated butler’s pantry scheme that packs a punch with its sensuous blue shade. Traditionally, the kitchen has been a neutral zone where clients steered clear of adventurous tones. Yet today designers are turning to bright and dramatic designs in the kitchen’s auxiliary spaces: Think glamorous and vivid gem tones in a prep kitchen, butler’s pantry or wet bar. These more modest areas are being transformed into rich jewel boxes—a surprising departure from what was once a purely functional room. As Haskett notes, “Color really sets the tone of the room.” So why not add some drama to peeling potatoes and storing spaghetti sauce?

PANTRY PERFECT LAUREN HASKETT
While using a strong color took some persuading (Black was the original pick!), designer Lauren Haskett always knew her client’s butler’s pantry needed something fresh. The trick was elevating the design of this space with polished surfaces and elegant details that were in keeping with the rest of this stately home near Fort Worth, Texas. houstoninteriordesign.co Tell us about the function of this space. I call this the butler’s pantry, but it really has a multitude of uses including acting as a connector between the main kitchen, media room and mudroom, so it gets used all the time. As the kitchen space only has one wall of cabinetry, this room doubles as a coffee bar, wet bar, charging station, storage area for china and catering kitchen. Several appliances, including a Perlick refrigerator, Scotsman ice machine and KitchenAid dishwasher, are also housed in the pantry.
A Native Trails sink and Kallista faucet sit in front of a large window that looks out onto the patio and pool. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls.
206 / luxesource.com
Is the same level of sophistication carried throughout the house? The overall aesthetic of the home is definitely on the formal side and even the spaces that are casual still have an elegance to them, so I wanted to make sure the butler’s pantry reflected how refined this residence is. I also wanted to inject a dose of glamour with this grand color.
photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.
The color is so striking. How did you select it? I’m so happy we went with Hague Blue because there is so much depth to it; it can go green, blue and gray all at the same time. However, what’s most important when working with a darker color in a space is to incorporate contrast, so it won’t ever feel like a cave. Here, we added lighter countertops, pale wallpaper, metallic hardware and glass-front cabinets that bounce light around.

OUR ANNUAL DEEP DIVE INTO REAL ESTATE AND THE SHEER LUXURY OF HIGH-RISE LIVING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL
PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
MOVING ON UP Over the last few years, more and more people have been gravitating toward cities and the vibrant lifestyle that high-rise living delivers. Young executives, international professionals, families and retired couples are looking for ease, convenience and walkability—museums, restaurants and schools at their doorstep—but all within the frame of luxury living. To meet the demand, developers are turning to the world’s most respected architects and designers to create residential buildings that meet every need, and quite a few whims. A latenight cognac and a game of billiards? A sunrise swim in the infinity pool overlooking the city? It’s all possible. And while the amenities are designed to feel resort-like, they are also intended to feel like home.

RISE
The Harrison, on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, was ahead of the curve when it devoted its penthouse floor not to the preeminent condo but to its residents’ pleasure—a democratizing move that new developments are following. There, designer Ken Fulk, who designed all of the property’s public spaces, created Uncle Harry’s, a green-lacquered lounge that lets everyone take in the 49th floor’s spectacular vistas. “With 180-degree views spanning from the ocean to the bay, we imagined this as the sky-high aerie of a bon vivant explorer that just happens to be your favorite uncle,” says Fulk. Accessed by a grand entry salon, the floor includes a dining room, pantry, fitness center and spa. It’s an homage to the city’s elegant and continental spirit, just with Fulk’s signature pizazz. theharrisonsf.com

TABLE TALK For its latest collection, Armani/Casa has re-released its clever Link coffee tables with a colorful new look. Originally created in walnut and brass, the new edition, which debuted at Salone del Mobile in Milan this spring, is designed with shagreen-effect leather tops in red, blue and green—colors that appear throughout the collection. The tabletops are banded with satin-brass trim and set on walnut bases. Use the three rhomboidal designs as handy little side tables on their own, or nestle them together to form a larger, hexagonal surface (shown). armani.com/casa

Lobby library at 277 Fifth Avenue “Our design reflects the energy and sensibility of NoMad,” says Jeffrey Beers of his vision for 277 Fifth Avenue. “It’s my favorite neighborhood in New York, so it was easy to be inspired by the area’s historical buildings and creative vibe.” Making a traditional statement in thoroughly modern style is the lobby library, one of the building’s most sophisticated amenities. 277fifth.com Why a library? In the building’s lobby entrance, we really wanted to make an instant “welcome home” statement. Describe the look. Handsome, sensible, tailored and timeless. Tell us about the features. If you look closely, you’ll see the library mimics the building’s exterior. It’s beautifully made with dramatic, double-height cases and incredible wood detailing. While we have an affection for designing bookcases (I’m an avid book collector), we prefer to collaborate with renowned publishers like Assouline to curate what goes onto the shelves.

HIGH SOCIETY
FOUR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS CHAT ABOUT LUXURY AMENITIES AND THE FUTURE OF HIGH-RISE LIVING.
CURT R. BAILEY
LEONARD STEINBERG
KEVIN BATCHELOR
BRIAN LEVITT
What trends are you seeing in the high-rise sector? Developers will increasingly cater to families who appreciate the benefits of urban living—a graciously designed residence that extends to worldclass amenities for all generations. Must-have amenity: Fitness centers. I want state-of-the-art equipment, first-class service, innovative programming, and well-designed spaces that offer communal cardio workouts to private Pilates sessions. relatedmidwest.com
Why is the high-rise market so hot? Time is the last luxury, and high-rise living delivers convenience. Elevating yourself above the city allows you to enjoy all its joys while separating yourself when it’s time to relax and unwind. Amenities on the horizon: Wind turbines on top, generating energy for the entire building and a landing pad for drone deliveries. Security will become much greater, too. compass.com
Who’s moving in? In the past decade, we have seen a downsizing trend amongst empty nesters, gypsy nesters and older millennials. What’s luring them? This demographic wants walkability and a 24-hour, lock-and-leave lifestyle. Everyone wants their own personal concierge to handle everything from dry cleaning and food deliveries to tickets to the opera. They’re looking for higher-quality, personalized butler-style services. You can’t beat the hyper-convenience. hines.com
What amenity is most important to you? Where we live has a profound effect on our well-being and I’m all for beautifully designed common spaces that encourage gathering. How do you see the high-rise lifestyle advancing? People choose condo living because they want to know their neighbors. There needs to be a renewed focus on creating memorable experiences that build a stronger connection between people, place and community. navareal.com

15 Hudson Yards, a collaboration between architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, who oversaw the interiors, has devoted its 51st floor to entertaining amenities that will thrill epicureans and oenophiles alike. Not only are there private dining suites and a speakeasylike wine storage facility, but also a chef’s kitchen and wine tasting room. Rockwell defined the kitchen with a monolithic stone island and opted for leather counter stools in shades of gray and green—all in keeping with the project’s focus on natural materials and interiors that are, “simultaneously calm and strong,” he says. Adding to the gastronomic delights are the property’s restaurants by such luminaries as Thomas Keller and José Andrés. hudsonyardsnewyork.com

EXPERIENCE CHANGERS Technology. In the kitchen, revolutionary innovations are making everything safer, and more powerful, durable and efficient. Appliances are easier to use while producing better results, and modern building technologies are creating products that are stronger and more beautiful than their predecessors. Lighting. When the interior of a cabinet or drawer has a recessed or routed light strip, it enhances use in unexpected ways. Everything within those spaces looks better, and when paired with glass doors, inner cabinet lighting casts a soft light over the kitchen that is especially striking at night.

Denver-based Kitchen Distributors has been helping its community design and build beautiful kitchens for more than 66 years. It’s a heritage that speaks to dedication—to the products, to great design, to each client. It also connotes expertise, which company president Tom Hartman shows when asked to share the most important element of kitchen design. “The layout will determine whether the space is a joy to be in, or awkward and difficult to use,” he says. “During our design process, every aspect of how a client interacts with the kitchen is taken into consideration, making sure that form always follows function. True innovation is rarely made from an aesthetic perspective.” On that note, he mentions bulthaup, a German kitchen manufacturer the Kitchen Distributors team frequently utilizes and which Hartman says, “is inextricably linked with the development of the modern kitchen.”
RECONSIDER THAT ‘REFRESH’ Upon being asked how one might give the kitchen a quick makeover, many would say something like “replace the hardware and appliances” or “change out all of the light fixtures.” While Hartman agrees that these updates can change the feel of the space, he emphasizes that the right choice is really just to gut it. “Trying to ‘refresh’ a kitchen is like trying to paint over the rust on your car,” he says. “Your best bet is to spend the money and do it right.”

German-born Sabine Buechner spends her days designing the kitchen, and it’s a perfect fit. After studying interior architecture and completing an apprenticeship with a cabinetmaker, Buechner realized how much she enjoys this particular area of work. It helped that cooking is one of her other great loves. Keeping her own appreciation for culinary arts always in mind, Buechner begins each project by getting to know the client, using their own preferences for the space as a guide once she begins her creative process. “The most interesting part of my job is learning about the client’s individual daily routines, and cooking and entertaining styles,” she says. “Once I have that, I begin a design journey that includes playing with geometrical shapes, changing depths/heights and balancing colors and materials.”
BRAND SPOTLIGHT: LEICHT The primary manufacturer with which Buechner and her team work, Leicht is a premier German cabinet company known for its huge variety of open shelving systems, glass fronts, wall paneling systems, tables and benches. According to Buechner, the brand’s color options, too, are noteworthy. “White never goes out of style, and Leicht knows this, so the lineup has multiple shades of white in different materials,” she says. The collection of products under the Leicht name also includes some unusual standouts, like the undercounter smartphone charging station, which is integrated into a countertop. “Simply place your phone on a certain spot on the counter, and it starts charging,” Buechner enthuses. “No wires … just magic.”

HOW TO DO MOUNTAIN MODERN This style, a Colorado favorite, is all about mixing contemporary elements with organic ones. Malin shares the secrets to creating this look in the kitchen and bath. Pay attention to hues. “Move away from cool grays and into warmer earth tones with rich, saturated accent colors.” Be eclectic. “We tend to gravitate toward spaces that give our eyes multiple elements to examine, and mixing materials, tones and textures builds that visual interest. To do this, while maintaining a sense of harmony, pick a few themes to repeat, such as using several shades of wood or sticking to only neutrals.”

For Jamie Malin and his team at Vail Cabinets, form always follows function. But they can, of course, be complementary. “We pride ourselves on delivering a package that seamlessly blends style with practicality,” he says. “What good is a beautiful room if it doesn’t function? An ideal kitchen or bath works as well as it looks.” With more than 20 years of experience in the design and installation of high-end custom cabinetry, Vail Cabinets has undoubtedly got both aspects of its trade down pat. The team also fosters a deep understanding of what the locals love. “Our clients prefer concealed and clean integration, with maximized and clever storage solutions,” Malin says. “They are also looking to modernize while incorporating their mountain setting, and often choose to mix natural woods with acrylic or textured melamine.”

When the team at Vertical Arts Architecture begins to design a kitchen or bath, the client is the first point of focus. “The cornerstone of everything we do is listening, which helps us discover opportunities to create a well-loved design,” company owner Brandt Vanderbosch says. “Our in-depth envisioning process delves into functional and aesthetic desires, enabling us to decide which elements need to be practical and which can have a little more flair.” Striking that balance is essential to the creation of kitchen and bathroom spaces that will stand the test of time for the individual homeowner. But Vanderbosch says one aspect is almost universal among his clients: the open-plan kitchen. “More often than not, the kitchen now bleeds into dining spaces, living areas and outdoor rooms, with views open through large glass walls,” he says.
“Everything we do is designed to craft our clients’ stories with empathy and creativity.”

hen Brad and Emily Gunlock set out to build a family home, they brought some serious skills to the game. Brad is a developer and general contractor and Emily has a thriving real estate career. Together, they own a luxury real estate development company. But when the long-time Wash Park residents decided to build a new house of their own closer to the trendy neighborhood’s park, they chose to rewrite the rules for something different. The couple wanted the design of their new home to be a departure from the city’s popular Denver Square, a style akin to a two-story box with a flat face, a center front door and four front windows. Their architect, Mary T. Williams, designed a striking floating staircase in the home’s northwest corner, which drove the interior layout for the rest of the house. “We moved the stair to this corner to make full use of the incredible amount of light the windows provide to all three levels,” she explains. The move resulted in a home with a number of large windows and an exterior with varied planes. Brad and Emily also wanted a house made almost entirely of light-colored Texas limestone, so those tall windows also helped counterbalance the heaviness of the stone, as did the addition of sections of white-wood siding. As developers, they pay attention to how a home can best serve the people who live in it—and here they practiced what they preach. For example, they love to entertain casually, so they decided to forgo a formal dining room. “Sometimes we’ll have 20 people over for dinner, so a table surrounded by 10 chairs doesn’t work,” Emily says.

In the kitchen, a playfully patterned mosaic makes up the bar backsplash. Ballard Designs’ Shelton counter stools are tucked under an island, which was painted in Benjamin Moore’s Collingwood and crafted by Aspen Leaf Kitchens Ltd. Burnished brass pendants by Visual Comfort hang above.
The couple enlisted Pamela Chelle—a friend of theirs since childhood—to outfit the interiors with the same attitude. Playing off the limestone outside, the designer decided to incorporate natural materials inside. “We have wood on some of the ceilings and in panel details for character,” she says. “We also used quite a bit of natural stone inside. The authentic, beautiful materials gel together.” The Gunlocks embrace casual living, but they also work in their home, often with clients, so Chelle helped them find a design balance—a look she calls casual elegance. She achieved it with details that are both refined and fun-loving. “We wanted trim work but nothing that was fussy or super
ornate,” the designer says, providing an example. Another is found in the couple’s office, where a large conference table is topped with elegant marble. On one side of the table is a wall of bookshelves featuring a custom, rolling library ladder. “This is something we have never done before,” Brad says. “But it was a feature I recalled from houses that I’d been in as a kid, and I always wanted one.” When choosing furnishings, comfort and durability were a priority along with sophistication. Most of the furnishings are covered in heavy duty fabric, and the beauty of the cloth belies its toughness. “I think the dining chairs are my favorite,” Emily says. “They are covered with indoor-outdoor fabric, but

they don’t look like it.” To amplify the elegance of the seats, Chelle added a brass stretcher detail to the chair backs. The home’s design especially caters to the family’s love of indoor-outdoor living. “You can seat quite a few people inside and out, with lots of doors opening up to the back,” says Emily. Landscape architect Robb Hile created two conversation areas outside, one with a fire pit, and brought in plantings that provide visual interest throughout the year. “I try to use a lot of grasses, so you have something blowing around as well as some screening, and pretty flowers for flashes of color where you need it,” he says. Flashes of color on the inside come from artwork the couple collected by Santa Fe artists. The placement of each piece in the new home was carefully considered, and their latest purchase, a vibrant painting of a Native American, earned a prominent space in the entryway. “Santa Fe is a five-hour drive, and we always seem to come back with a piece of art, so we can’t go there very often,” Emily jokes. The couple is delighted with the new home and considers it a successful style experiment. “Over the years we have built many homes for ourselves, and it has become a way to figure out what works for us and for our clients,” says Emily. Brad agrees, adding, “We’re our own guinea pigs.”

or Morrison, Colorado-based artist Sarah Winkler, being outside is as important as putting paint to canvas. “I love that as a landscape painter you get to climb mountains, walk trails and be in nature as part of your job,” she muses. “I get such pleasure from being outdoors and I want to pass that on.” Winkler’s landscape paintings push far beyond the traditional, exploring the intersection between geology and history. Her interest in the concept of how landscapes change over time was first sparked in college and, after she moved west two decades ago, it grew exponentially. “It’s fascinating to be around the mountains and live in nature,” she says. “The geology is really exposed out here.” Her intent is to capture the many layers of her surroundings. “I like the artwork to be as complex as the landscape itself,” she says. “It starts with me getting interested in a certain area and then traveling there. Being in the landscape and experiencing it is very important.” While visiting a location she photographs and draws the scenery—“I’m trying to memorize the shapes and lines,” she says—Winkler also researches how the topography was formed. “I think of ways to mimic that in the art process,” she notes. “I view it as very similar to the landscape formation process.” Fusing her research with experimentation, Winkler creates small-scale collages to work out her compositions. She’ll create a multitude
of these collages, but says only one or two of those will have a “wow factor,” and those serve as the basis for what will eventually become her large-scale paintings. In her latest work, the artist started incorporating crushed minerals and rocks—think marble dust, pink granite or sandstone. The size of her pieces (many of which are 5 feet by 5 feet or larger) are a purposeful nod to the vast expanses in the natural world. “I’m trying to recapture that feeling when you first see something like the Grand Canyon or Pikes Peak,” Winkler explains. “I really love working large because I think it has that impression.” The result of sudden geologic occurrences (such as flash flooding or an earthquake) plays a part in Winkler’s work. In a recent show, “Monumental Duality” at K Contemporary gallery in Denver, she explored the idea that ancient landscapes are shaped through a series of unexpected cataclysmic events. And her current series “Smoke Signals” focuses on the impact recent wildfires have had on the Western landscape, serving as a reminder to viewers about the effect humans have on the earth. “Sometimes I’m at odds with contemporary culture,” Winkler observes. “I see people in front of a natural feature just to take a selfie without appreciating what’s before them.” But through art she tries to reveal the greater beauty and history of our world: “I’m trying to inspire people to care about the earth, and to respect it.”
DOMINO EFFECT A MINOR CHANGE TRIGGERS A REMODEL CHAIN REACTION IN A DENVER HOME. WRITTEN BY MINDY PANTIEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MINTON REDFIELD

hen it comes to interior design, chain reactions are common. It often goes like this: A new sofa makes the old armchairs look a little worn, so they are reupholstered. The fresh seats make the existing rug seem out of place and the old drapes look wrong, so they are both replaced. It’s that type of scenario that designer Mikhail Dantes found himself in when Thomas Madden, a single dad with a young daughter, approached him about furnishing his newly acquired home in Denver’s coveted Wash Park neighborhood. During an early walkthrough, Thomas nonchalantly indicated a chip in the kitchen counter and asked if it could be replaced. To which Dantes replied that changing the top would probably mean the old sink had to go, and then the cabinets might not look right, and well, you can guess what happened next. “From that one little chip we moved into a whole house remodel and before we knew it we were taking the interior down to the studs,” says Dantes. “The house had great bones, but I really wanted something more modern,” says Thomas, who was drawn to Dantes’ knack for making neutral palettes inviting and minimalist interiors both elegant and livable. Along with those attributes the designer’s take-no-prisoners approach to any form of excess has become an accepted part of his signature style. “No case, no base, no trim,” Dantes says about refreshing this home. “We recreated the architecture inside by stripping down superfluous decoration.” Putting the initial “furnishings only” request on hold, the designer first tackled the more pressing issues of reassigning rooms and eliminating any references to the home’s Tuscan ambience—distressed cabinets and faux plaster walls in mottled shades of red, taupe and blue topping the casualty list. In short order, the master bathroom and closet were reorganized to create more storage space, three cramped upper-level guest rooms were merged into two larger spaces, and all evidence of faux stone mantels, columns and other Italian accents vanished. Paramount to the reinvention was a thoughtful layering of new materials starting with lightly stained walnut floors and walls coated in Dantes’ go-to Benjamin Moore shade of Super White. In the living room, the monolithic limestone-wrapped fireplace with suede padded tiles above the mantel would normally be the sole statement piece, but in the open layout the kitchen’s mix of lacquer and dark oak cabinets also draws you in. Add to that the ceiling, where large collaged pieces of lacquered tea paper line the spaces between the coffers, causing all eyes to gaze up. “I wanted to add a pattern that was more organic to contrast with all the clean lines,” Dantes says.
“And when you’re lying on the sofa it’s nice to look up and see something wonderful.” Still, Dantes insists it is not any one thing that stands out in the great room but rather the amalgamation that makes it successful. “There’s a lot going on, but the trick was how to make all those elements blend in a peaceful cohesive way,” says the designer, who also added nubby linen upholstery on the sofa and a hand-knotted wool rug on the floor as textural interjections. “The quietness and subtlety of the palette makes it possible to layer many things without any one thing being in your face.” Throughout, there are geometry lessons. In the dining room, for example, the console table’s metal frame mimics the linear pattern of the hide-on-hair rug, with the blocks and lines on the wall art providing the perfect complement. “I took my cues from the grid pattern created by the coffered ceiling in the living room,” Dantes says. In the lower-level media room, stripes and cubes depicted in the artwork reinforce the pattern subtheme in the rug and in the dramatic fireplace with book-matched marble. In the master bedroom, a wooly sheepskin rug and suede wallcovering soften the tone-on-tone space, but the latter required a little convincing. “There was this over-the-top gold accent wall I saw that I thought would be perfect,” the homeowner shares. “But Mikhail nicely suggested that I might get tired of it and gently steered me toward the suede instead, which I really love.” Steering his clients in the direction of longevity is another part of Dantes’ enduring design philosophy. “My approach with every client is the same,” he says. “No tricks or gimmicks—and whatever the style, it’s about beautiful pieces mixed together to create beautiful rooms.”

CHARACTER STUDY THE OLD-WORLD FAÇADE OF THIS BOULDER HOME BELIES A CONTEMPORARY FAMILY HAVEN THAT EMBRACES THE GREAT OUTDOORS. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC LUCERO
T
he old saying about not judging a book by its cover takes on architectural significance when applied to the home of this Boulder couple. The stately dwelling is fronted by a formal courtyard entrance and grand doors, but inside an airy, streamlined interior makes for modern family living. It’s an unexpected design twist the couple commissioned after deciding to build a custom home for themselves and their daughter. The style is inspired by the homeowners’ travels through the European wine country and their love of gatherings. “We knew we wanted to mimic an old-world home on the exterior,” recalls the wife. “Inside we were looking for a more modern edge with an indoor-outdoor feel, because that’s what we like when entertaining.” To achieve this study in contrasts, the couple turned to designer Miranda Cullen, architect Jane Snyder and general contractor Hal Colvin. On the front exterior, Snyder adopted classical features like stone wainscoting. Inside, the home’s open layout soars with high ceilings and sliding floor-to-ceiling glass doors that provide a modern vibe. The H-shaped footprint frames a central terrace, where “on nice days we can open the doors and look over to the Flatirons and the foothills,” says the husband. “I love that you can be inside yet feel like you are a part of the tree canopy.” The blurring of the indoors and outdoors was precisely what the architect intended. “We wanted the rear of the home to be modern and open, and to have every single room lead outside,” she explains. Despite this modern construct, traditional materials still seep into the interior architecture, though reinterpreted to suit the space’s sweeping volume and streamlined bones. To frame the central living room, Snyder incorporated a wall of rustic stones with flush grout lines that echo the traditional masonry of old European houses—a detail the homeowners longed for from the beginning. “I noticed

during our travels through Tuscany that so many of those old houses bring the stone inside,” recalls the wife. “So we tried to envision how the stone could come into our own home. We wanted it to look like maybe this was an older part of the home from way back when that evolved over time as it was added onto.” This traditional stonework contrasts with the home’s more graphic features like the black and white kitchen, which pairs gleaming Neolith slabs with burnished-tin panels on the backsplash and island. The fireplaces also strike contemporary notes with their sleek surrounds, such as the living room’s façade of gray plaster and limestone. Surrounded by this delicate blend of old and new, Cullen— along with designer and co-principal Devon Tobin—focused on pieces that would harmonize with both styles. “Everything we selected was pretty transitional, never overtly modern,” notes Cullen. “Each space contains some elements that are clean-lined, and some that are a little bit more traditional.” Finding this balance began by expressing the desired feeling of the home through textiles. “For our first meeting, Miranda showed up with three large containers full of fabric samples in different colors and textures for us to explore,” recalls the wife. This initial experience proved “really helpful for us,” adds the husband. “We were pretty sensitive in terms of the right materials. We wanted something that felt comfortable, but also looked right. It’s those small details that make it special.” Throughout the process, the couple were drawn to a serene palette of whites, creams, grays and “anything soft to the touch,” says Cullen, noting textiles run the gamut from buttery suede to lush velvet. “Everything has a really nice hand to it. They were looking for an aesthetic that was not fussy, but more tonal and textural.” These textiles became central in unifying the classicmeets-modern design, like tempering the living room sectional’s angular silhouette with “some really beautiful pillows made in fabrics that have a pattern,” explains Cullen. She also transformed several of the homeowners’ existing classic accent chairs “with a more modern print or finish.” Abundant drapery was also employed to balance the dark frames that surround the home’s sliding doors and windows, like the taupe double-height Casadeco draperies in the living room. “The architecture is very bold, it was our job to make it approachable,” notes the designer. Custom lighting also introduces more moments of softness, such as the delicate glass sphere pendant floating over the breakfast nook. When Cullen unveiled the final look to the couple after a week of installation, the experience “was very emotional and touching,” confesses the wife. Their new home “brings all these things that we love together—and it was just beautiful seeing everything we imagined come to life.”
When she was hired to help a Boulder couple furnish their new contemporary home, designer Miranda Cullen proved context is everything. In the upstairs hallway, for instance, she placed a traditional console in a more modern, edited backdrop—elements like the oversize giclee print of an egret give the traditional furniture a new attitude.

The great room functions for both entertaining and everyday living thanks to abundant seating including twin Aiden chairs, a Morado Curves club chair—all by Theodore Alexander—and a Thayer Coggin sectional. A painting by local artist Will Day is rigged on a sliding system to screen the television when not in use.

A glass sphere pendant by Wired Custom Lighting and a bench upholstered in onyx leather gives the breakfast nook glamour. It’s a look that’s amplified in the adjacent dining room, which features a showstopping Ugolino Elliptic crystal chandelier, elegant Fellon armchairs by Artistic Frame and a custom oak table by Michael Trent Coates.

Opposite: On the main floor, the lounge can be closed off with sliding panels, creating a more intimate space “that’s the perfect spot for people to have a cocktail before dinner,” says architect Jane Snyder. To create a conversation space, Cullen centered the four Prentiss chairs by Bernhardt around Thayer Coggin’s Clip table ottoman. Below: Cullen wanted to add some warmth to the sleek black and white kitchen, so she selected a row of pendants by Legend of Asia for over the island and bronze Visual Comfort Camille sconces. Walnut Cherner counter stools from Design Within Reach also introduce organic lines.

A bevy of textiles creates a lush haven in the master bedroom, starting with the tufted Theodore Alexander Brougham bed, a plush Daphne area rug by Antrim and custom Taffard Fabrics draperies. Cullen also transformed the couple’s armchair from their previous home with a shimmering, foiled herringbone jacquard by Zinc Textile.
