EDITOR’S LETTER
W
ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES
LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”
LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68
Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Palm Beach | amyhermaninteriors.com
Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

CHECK IN HALL ARTS HOTEL
Home to the Winspear Opera House and the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas’ vibrant Arts District is a natural setting for the new Hall Arts Hotel, a boutique concept that debuted in December 2019. Drawing inspiration from its neighborhood, the hotel offers 183 contemporary guest rooms, 6,000 square feet of private event space and three restaurants, including Ellie’s, helmed by executive chef and Texas native Eric Dreyer, formerly of Fearing’s at the RitzCarlton in Dallas. Suites are aptly named after arts vernacular, such as the Marquee and the Overture, and each guest room is adorned with handpicked photography showcasing the beauty of the Arts District, among them works inspired by Hall’s “Through the Lens” photo competition. Curated by industry experts Virginia Shore and Patricia Meadows, the inaugural art collection showcases both emerging and established talent—such as Mexican artist Pedro Reyes, Lava Thomas and Antonius-Tín Bui—whose work tackles topics that challenge personal introspection and social conversation while aiming to create a sense of hope. hallartshotel.com

LAURIER BLANC
Suzanne Coppola developed her love for outdoor markets, antique shops and marché aux puces—the Paris flea markets— as a newlywed living overseas. Today she fuels that passion as the owner and curator of Houston home decor and accessories gallery Laurier Blanc, taking annual buying trips to France, Belgium and Italy as well as the souks and markets of Morocco, Turkey, Cambodia, Laos and Hong Kong. She discussed her adventures with Luxe. laurierblanc.com
LAUNCH MADISON LILY RUGS
What do you love about your job? Visiting remarkable places worldwide for rare, unique finds. The journey itself is inspiring, but nothing compares to meeting small-town artisans and learning stories behind what I bring to the gallery. I love getting to know my clients and helping them find special pieces of their own. How is your gallery unique? From 18th-century French antiques to contemporary wares, we curate one-of-a-kind finds, furniture, tabletop pieces, art, pillows, rugs and more, and we offer both giftable pieces and collectible items. We can help clients find exactly what they need while on sourcing trips. Last but not least, we participate in the Marburger Farm Antique Show in Round Top twice a year. Tell us about Dwell with Dignity. I was honored that Kim Turner, Julie Dodson and Sharon Staley invited me to join the Houston chapter planning committee. Participating in the first home makeover in Houston was a life-changing experience. Laurier Blanc donates a percentage of all sales—and I help coordinate fundraising events—so Dwell with Dignity can expand and serve more families in need.
Founded by husband and wife Edgar and Kelly Podzemny, Houston-based luxury rug purveyor Madison Lily Rugs has added two new collections to its lineup: the Studio Series and the Architecture Collection. The former incorporates designs from Edgar’s very own paintings. An artist at heart, he was inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Cy Twombly to pursue art full-time in 2017; now, Edgar has reincarnated his mixed-media-on-canvas pieces into the collection, marrying his passions for luxury rugs and art. Just as imaginative but with more focus on structure and form, the Architecture Collection features rugs crafted from Chinese silk and wool that blend midcentury modern-, Art Deco- and Empire-inspired elements reminiscent of the Great Gatsby era. madisonlily.com

TALKING SHOP
Dallas designers Mary Beth Wagner and Ashley Avrea Cathey have developed The Collection by Avrea Wagner, a line of tables and fire screens that blend vintage with new for a timeless yet contemporary look. The tables were inspired by a 1940s French side table the designers discovered at a flea market, while the fire screens were conceived to fill a void the duo saw for sophisticated options in the market. Every piece is handcrafted and available in multiple colors with richly hued leathers and unlacquered brass or polished nickel frames, while the fire screens come in clear winter frosted, embellished band and plaid glass with brass and polished nickel fasteners. avreawagner.com/shop

DEFINING MOMENT
MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING
6
Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.
GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME
Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com
The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

8 SLUMBER PARTY PHOTO: ERIC PIASECKI /OTTO. ARTS REVIVAL PHOTO: PETER AARON/OTTO. ALL GROWN UP PHOTO: COURTESY ARTEMEST.
ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com
All GROWN UP
Where the term “foosball table” tends to evoke grungy dive bars and fraternity basements, the 90° Minuto Foosball Table by innovative Italian brand Teckell provides a welcome—read: terribly chic—turning of the tides in gaming accessories. With a 12 millimeter-thick crystal playing field, polished stainless-steel goals and a solid Canaletto walnut frame, the playful rec room addition reads as much objet d’art as competitive distraction. Game on. artemest.com

The kitchen is the heart of your home—the source of life for your family. It fuels your day with early morning coffee, and makes homework better with after-school snacks.
From loud family dinners to late night conversations, your kitchen is your faithful hub. It’s more than food prep. It’s where the magic happens.

ARCHITECTS
SYMMETRY ARCHITECTS Architect Clint H. Pearson could be considered an overnight success, crediting one Highland Park home for putting his company on the map. The “Normandy Residence” he speaks of— named one of “The 10 Most Beautiful Houses in Dallas” and purchased by Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman—was actually seven years in the making for Pearson and his team at Symmetry Architects. “Thanks to its new owner, local bloggers created a buzz about the home on the internet, and the rest is Symmetry success,” he says. Over the course of 20 years, Symmetry Architects has designed homes in suburban developments, large master-planned communities, lake and resort destinations, as well as established neighborhoods home to legacy wealth clients. Each of these projects is instilled with a careful attention to classical principles and proportions, in the spirit of esteemed architects like Palladio and Vitruvius. Calling on his high-end expertise, deep roots and impressive portfolio, Pearson sets the benchmark for artistry and classically principled curated works of strength and visual richness. “Symmetry is dedicated to the practice and art of building,” he says. “It is a continuous quest of prioritizing essential elements, with rigorous attention to detail and craft.”

“ Much of our work is about being tranquil, warmly engaging and meticulous about architecture in a way that is sensitive to the surroundings.”
Ask the Expert What are ways clients can work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? The emphasis should be to elevate the conversation to craft and skill, to bring forth everyone’s commitment to excellence. Most importantly, always deliver with a smile. What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in? A boutique or luxury hotel with beachfront or wine country views. To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success and why? Our greatest success is achieving elegance, the importance of quiet, kindness and collaboration with our clients.

Ask the Expert What is inspiring you now? Meeting good customers and good people. What is the biggest lesson you have learned so far about maintaining (or growing) a multigenerational company’s success? It takes dedicated and quality people to be involved. From labor, sales, accounting—you need the best.

Building a successful business is never an easy endeavor, let alone creating a family legacy. For Jon Roy Reid, president of Trinity Floor Company, both have come as a result of quality workmanship, products and staff. “Our long-term vision is to reach 100 years and still be family owned,” he says. Having recently celebrated its 80th year in business and as the oldest flooring contractor in Texas, Trinity Floor Company is well on its way to reaching this goal. “Our firm was established in the 1930s by my grandfather, Roy Gillette,” he says. “We initially started doing army bases, which was 90 percent wood floors. Then we moved into production builders and apartment houses in the Dallas area, which was the main part of our business in the 1950s and ‘60s.” Reid’s father, Harold, joined the business in 1939 and was one of the founding members of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). In 1986, he founded the North Texas Flooring Association, and also served as president of the Dallas Floor Covering Association. “All of Harold’s hard work over the years resulted in his being inducted into the NWFA Hall of Fame in 1994, as well as being inducted to the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association Hall of Fame in 2004,” Reid says. To grasp the impact of Trinity Floor’s work over the decades, a short drive in and around Dallas tells its story, from the original Statler Hilton Hotel, to the Dallas Museum of Art, American Airlines Center, and many other buildings and residences of note.

1999 Throughout Trinity Floor’s 80 years in business, it has installed and refinished over 1,000 gym floors, including those at the American Airlines Center over the past 20 years. Located in downtown Dallas, this structure was built in 1929 as a United States Post Office and Court House, later becoming well-known as the famous Sarah T. Hughes Federal Courtroom. Beginning in 2007, this historic building underwent a complete renovation and today occupies 78 luxurious residential lofts. The notable judge’s chambers and tax court were converted into a residential lounge.
After shutting its doors for almost two decades and reopening after a three-year renovation, the Statler Ballroom freshened up its floors for the new up-and-comers to bring their version of soul to downtown Dallas. Also in 2017, a West End building located at 603 Munger Avenue, now called Factory Six03, underwent two years of historic redevelopment and is now open for business. The floors were worn, but had potential for a second life, so the old maple was restored to its original beauty.

HOME BUILDERS + REMODELERS
BELLA CUSTOM HOMES Third-generation home builder Tony Visconti loves classic architecture. And it shows in every masterpiece he and his team build at Bella Custom Homes. “Back in the late 2000s, we started a spec home on Park Lane in Preston Hollow. Its classic Italian Renaissance architecture and incredible finish out set the bar for our future superluxury projects, and remains a favorite for many admirers,” Visconti says. Renowned for their architectural integrity, Visconti, president, and vice president Stacy Brotemarkle lead the Dallas-based firm known for Italian Renaissance, Mediterranean and Tuscan-style homes. “But, we do it all,” Visconti assures, referring to the company’s vast and varied portfolio, including transitional, English, French and Spanish. “With over 26 years’ experience in the Dallas market, we have had the honor of completing many different styles of projects, of varying sizes,” Brotemarkle says. Integral to the success of Bella Custom Homes is its long-standing relationships with craftsmen and suppliers, many of whom have partnered with the company since the early 1990s. “Our talented and collaborative team goes from house to house with us, no matter the size or price point,” Visconti says. “We are truly honored to have such a talented and devoted group to work with every day as we create these phenomenal homes.”

What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in … that you haven’t already? We love topography lots, whether that lot slopes down to a lake or to a backdrop of wooded trees. We are working on one now that slopes 30 feet from the curb to the water’s edge, where we are creating three breathtaking backyard destinations to take in the views. What are some of the ways clients can work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? The stepping-stone of our design process is our Design Selection Schedule, which helps guide clients, step by step, through the selection process. We are also there for every meeting and ensure the client signs off on each selection to make sure they are getting what they want.

STAGING
Ask the Expert What is the next move for your firm? We are working on many new and exciting custom products for the George Bass Collection in 2020. The furniture is made in the U.S. by the most talented artisans in the business, including sofas and chairs in performance fabrics and textures.
George Bass Owner 214.546.0100 georgebassstageanddesign georgebassdesign.com
GEORGE BASS STAGE & DESIGN George Bass’ upbringing, deep family ties and global education provided an inspirational roadmap for his becoming a professional home staging and design expert. “California’s Mediterranean architecture, Mexico’s rich culture and studying art in Switzerland gave me the privilege to live an incredible life, seeing the extraordinary colors, furniture and design from all over the world,” says Bass, owner of George Bass Stage & Design, whose clients rely on his storied past and unsurpassed achievements to transform and update properties, and bring in buyers. “On a weekly basis, realtors just hand over the keys and let us loose,” he says. In the design/decor business since 1998, Bass took his realtor friends’ advice to try staging in 2006, and 13 years later, he and his team stage an average of 200 properties a year for over 100 top agents and 22 builders. “Our market is primarily Dallas and its Park Cities, but due to growing demand, we have expanded into the surrounding luxury markets like Westlake, Southlake and Flower Mound,” he says. New York and Los Angeles are next on the list. “Our greatest success is thriving with market changes and adapting to the demands of what buyers expect to see, surpassing everyone’s expectations, especially our own.”

What is the first project that put your company on the map? The first project that really put us on the map was a large estate in Highland Park on Lakeside Drive. It garnered so much social media coverage that we were featured extensively throughout the metroplex and online. What style(s) is your firm most known for? We are known for a soft, transitional style with modern edges to achieve a relaxed, yet elegant feel. I use a lot of white fabrics and unusually large modern art. First impressions are everything on social media.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS
DUNBAR ROAD DESIGN Designer Carla Hrncir discovered her passion for interior design early on, spending summers in Miami and Palm Beach with her Cuban parents and extended family. Her passion evolved organically through the years, eventually becoming a reality. When building her own Dallas homes and vacation residences, Hrncir soon discovered her natural eye for beauty, keen organizational skills, resourcefulness, efficiencies, and ability to communicate in a genuine and likable way. With these skill sets, experiences and capabilities in hand, Hrncir founded her own firm, Dunbar Road Design, in 2016. Named for the estate where Hrncir’s mother and her family resided after being exiled from Cuba, Dunbar Road Design has quickly garnered local and regional accolades from Palm Beach, across Texas, to Southern California. Recently, she welcomed two new team members, elevating the firm’s capabilities and creative energy. Margaret Horsley joined the team in summer of 2019. As senior designer, she selects interior finishes, furniture, lighting and accessories for clients, as well as creates CAD renderings. Associate designer, and Texas native, Kelly Donovan joined the firm in June of 2018, bringing a fresh design perspective, abundant enthusiasm and imaginative ideas to every one of Dunbar Road Design’s projects.

Ask the Expert Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work? Ongoing inspiration continues to be found from my Cuban heritage, my mother’s incredible sense of style and my childhood summer memories of aqua-blue water, tropical hues and various shades of sunlight.

What style is your firm most known for? I take an adaptable approach, working within a myriad of aesthetics, from a rustic ski chalet in Aspen to a midcentury modern home in Palm Springs. In any case, I look for unexpected combinations that result in fun and interesting designs. What is the next move for your firm? We have transformed many homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and added two new bright and smiling faces to our team, senior designer Margaret Horsley and associate designer Kelly Donovan.

Leslie Jenkins Owner and Lead Designer 903.830.9990 jenkinsinteriors jenkinsinteriors.com
Ask the Expert What is the first project that put your company on the map? A 10,000-square-foot home for a prominent family in Tyler, Texas. It took six years to finish.
JENKINS INTERIORS Classic and timeless describes designer Leslie Jenkins’ stylistic approach to projects. “I love to incorporate traditional elements with a fresh modern twist,” she says. “Our work is typically on the soft, lighter side; however, we want each project to be a reflection of our client. So, while there is a common thread, each project stands on its own.” Jenkins achieves this balance as a result of the creative process she established at her namesake firm, Jenkins Interiors. “I love to get to know a client, the way they live, their likes and dislikes, and family dynamics,” she says. “If they have a notebook of photos or a Pinterest page, I study them to better understand their aesthetic. I discuss up front their expectations of us and better explain our role as their designer.” Part of that discussion involves asking clients to trust their designer. “Resisting the urge to micromanage allows a designer to be creative and use their talents,” she advises. While Jenkins prides herself on this boutique approach, it’s the long-term relationships with clients that she calls her greatest professional success. For her, success is more a journey than a destination, with a commitment to growing her team’s talents and perfecting their offerings. “I’m passionate about continuing education,” she says.

Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work and approach to it? Billy Baldwin, Veere Grenney, Dorothy Draper, historical fiction, fashion, and traveling here and abroad inspires me more than anything else. Is there anything else you’d like to add? STUDIO THOMAS JAMES For designers Philip Thomas Vanderford and Jason James Jones, joining forces proved to be a smart business move. Seven years ago, both were running their own interior design firms when they decided to combine companies and open Studio Thomas James, broadening their scope and capabilities. “We finally had the luxury of office space, which meant working with a support staff and operating at a higher level,” they say. Their business took off upon the completion of a renovation that featured a Southern vernacular. “It was the perfect blend of styles, textures and colors,” they say. “The project resonated with a large audience, immediately drawing a succession of elevated projects thereafter.” Key to the duo’s success is their creative process, which includes an extensive client interview, gaining intel on family history, lifestyle and general life experiences, such as collections, clothing and favorite destinations. Given this boutique approach, it comes as no surprise that Studio Thomas James doesn’t work in any one style … and Vanderford and Jones like it that way. “We pride ourselves on being able to work in a variety of genres and locations,” they say. Their next move is a new office, where the duo is creating an interior fit for their specific needs. “It is terribly exciting,” they say.

Ask the Expert What type of project would you love to take on or work in? After working on an aircraft, we are really enticed by the idea of designing a yacht. What part has the digital age or social media played in the success of your firm? Instagram has proven to be an excellent tool to share our work and interact with other design professionals. What do you feel has been your greatest success? Bringing to the table a high level of artistic sensibility, counterbalanced with the ability to understand, respect and manage clients’ budgets and schedules.

ertain fashionable London neighborhoods are known for their iconic townhouses, each one distinguished by a signature lacquered front door—like the one belonging to the home of Hugh Grant’s character in Notting Hill. And it was exactly this kind of first impression a Houston couple had in mind for the renovation of their River Oaks home. “We wanted the look of a typical London row house with a black lacquered door and brass hardware,” says the wife, who also desired to bring a certain “city chic” sophistication to the interiors of their residence. With three daughters who have attended English boarding school, the owners keep a mews house in London, where they honed some of their urban design sensibilities. So while the Houston home they purchased had the basics—a good layout, clean palette and hardwood floors—its casual ambience was hardly the right setting for the blend of transitional furnishings and contemporary art they envisioned. “It had a very informal cottage feel,” says designer Chandos Dodson Epley, who took immediate steps to plaster the walls in the main living areas and make other cosmetic changes, like adding new cabinet hardware and decorative lighting. Having worked previously with the couple on a home in Colorado, Epley—collaborating with project manager Phil Hudson—came to this project with a huge head start. “I already knew she prefers neutrals and contemporary art, and that she did not want an overly trendy house,” says the designer. With that in mind, Epley scoured every floor of the D&D building in New York City before embarking on an equally thorough search of the city’s Upper East Side antique shops. Her Herculean efforts proved fruitful and she returned to Texas with an assemblage of items guaranteed to elevate and distinguish every room. A twotone goatskin cocktail table, vintage French curved-back beech wood armchairs and a glass table with painted stacked bronze ball legs set the bar. With a game plan in place, blue became the base note for the otherwise black, cream and taupe color palette. “Every shade of blue is represented,” notes the designer, referencing the navy velvet on the dining room chairs and media room sectional, a hand-painted cerulean and white wallpaper backing the bar, and a serene shade of gray-blue in the master suite. “Playing the intensity up and down gives it a rhythm but keeps the vocabulary of the house intact,” she adds. Meanwhile, interjections of metal provide another cohesive layer. While Epley treaded lightly with subtle brass tips on the dining room chairs, and brass and shagreen side tables in
LX_TX62_HOM_Epley_HOU_14.indd 193
the living room, she opted to go big with an Italian brass-andglass chandelier in the master suite. “We didn’t want the room to read super feminine, so we brought in masculine lines with koa wood nightstands and the black dresser,” the designer explains. “And that stunning antique light fixture was the aha moment that helped it all come together.” Statement-making lighting emerged as yet another theme in the form of a Sputnik chandelier here and glass orbs there, further elevating the already cosmopolitan interiors. With the help of builders Steve Goodchild and John Goodchild, a father-and-son team, new wall paneling and mirrored tiles were added in the dining room where the latter reflects the room’s Murano glass chandelier. The resulting light display transforms every gathering into a special occasion. “Finding that chandelier felt like kismet,” Epley says. Mindful of the need for a contemporary edge to keep things fresh, the designer returned to New York City, this time with her client in tow, to make the art auction rounds. “We measured walls and went with an Excel spreadsheet in hand,” Epley says. Their efforts paid off in the form of Mark Flood’s modern work in the breakfast area and a David LaChapelle photo of fashion icons Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow in a bedroom used by the couple’s fashion designer daughter. “Houses are not complete until there is art on the walls,” Epley notes. “A sofa is a sofa, but art is one unique piece that is just yours.” The resulting mix of clean trimwork lines, soft upholstered pieces and edgy art checked every box on the clients’ wish list. “The house is perfect from both an aesthetic and functional standpoint,” says the wife. Epley concurs. “I think we nailed the London townhouse essence,” she says. “From the moment you walk through the lacquered front door, it’s a memorable experience.”

uring one particularly blustery and brutal New York City winter, Paige Gaines’ husband, Colby, suggested moving their family to his native Texas. Paige agreed, but with several conditions, one being that she could enlist the help of designer Dan Mazzarini. The couple first connected with Mazzarini after purchasing a tear-down on 1½ acres up North—and his execution of their new house from the ground up on that property earned their trust 10 times over. “For our Austin home, I wanted him to have the final say in everything—carte blanche,” says Paige. So, when the time came to hunt for real estate in the Texas capital, it was Mazzarini who toured potential homes with Paige, with the pair landing on a Spanish Colonialstyle residence with a Santa Barbara-esque stucco exterior and tile roof. “I call it Texas by way of California,” says Mazzarini, whose firm spearheaded the renovation, with

builder Becky Fuller brought on to implement the changes. “Becky has such finesse and understanding of the big picture,” notes Mazzarini, “and was amazing at recreating finishes like the detailed wall treatments and flooring we matched.” Rounding out Mazzarini’s team were lead designer Sarah Peterson Major, design architect Jesse Held and designer Christian Caldwell. And to ensure their ideas were executed with precision, Patrick Mackie of 787 Design Studio served as architect of record. Perhaps most ambitious of those ideas was the renovation of the kitchen, which formerly occupied a much smaller footprint and lacked a connection to the main living spaces. “It was a fraction of the size and very closed off, and that’s just not how this family lives,” says Mazzarini. “We opened everything up, so it became a hive of activity for the couple’s three busy kids.” The design team also added a larger island situated

perpendicular to the previous one, creating more space for cabinetry and casual family dining, and extended the Jerusalem tile floors by sourcing authentic new ones from Israel. Inserting rustic wood beams into the ceiling imparted a sense of history while helping demarcate the kitchen from the adjoining spaces, including a spacious pantry and warmly inviting family room. The family room is located in the home’s turret, which also houses the upstairs master bathroom and closet, both of which proved additional ambitious undertakings for Mazzarini, Fuller and her superintendent, Mike Lawrence. “We gutted the master bathroom and closet down to the studs and made sense of them,” Mazzarini says. “It was a real lemons-to-lemonade situation.” They maximized square

footage in the master bathroom with a luxurious walk-in shower and an improved his-and-her vanity and makeup area, while also carving out a spacious master closet, which features custom-made cabinetry perfectly curved around the room’s perimeter. For every new piece Mazzarini selected for the interiors, form had to follow function. “With our kids, we needed everything to be comfortable and livable,” Paige explains. Mazzarini rendered each space in pen and marker with accompanying descriptions to present to his clients for feedback before making any purchases. And the result has a “shaken-out casualness,” Mazzarini says, achieved using a neutral palette that nods to his past work for Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors. As with the creamy

tenets of styling into account, opting to lean rather than hang many for a more livable feel. “I thought out the home in a cinematic way,” he explains. “As interiors experts, I consider us set designers for the owners’ life.” The combined living-and-dining space created in lieu of a formal dining room has become one such setting for this family. With a vibe that’s “somewhere between cocktails and casual,” Mazzarini describes, it underscores a freewheeling lifestyle that invites the family to kick off their new cowboy boots and relax. “Taking pretense out of the equation allowed the owners to feel at home,” Mazzarini says. “It’s not just about living, but living well.”

mong the dust of antiquity, artworks of the past almost seem connected to another universe, far from our experience. At times, however, something familiar in them seizes our memory: the curl of a flower, gesture of a hand, or gaze of a face we could know. Austin-based artist RF Alvarez hunts for these moments in art, when the distance of time melts away into pure human connection. “There’s something archaeological about my work,” he says. “I try to tap into stories that have been told over and over, spanning generations, cultures and borders, to unearth the human thread underneath it all.” Referencing ancient iconography from around the globe, Alvarez infuses this energy into his work. With simplified outlines in swaths of emotive color, his fluid paintings of human figures and flora and fauna feel like modern idols, though equally comfortable among Mesoamerican Olmec statues or classical Greek pottery. And his collages often incorporate handmade papers, from Khadi sheets to Charta Bambagina, made for nearly a millennium in Amalfi. “I love tapping into the heritage of a medium that has served as a vehicle of memories for so long,” Alvarez notes. His search for cultural connective tissue is a personal one. Growing up in Texas, with roots in Mexico on his father’s side, Alvarez says, “A lot of my early work was about trying to reconcile disparate backgrounds.” While he moved to New York City after college to work as a graphic designer in advertising, he eventually began to yearn examining the human experience through art instead. So he took off to explore the world and returned to Texas to set up his current practice. Alvarez begins each new series as a creative excavation, researching in the library. Exploring desire, his recent show, “Deseo,” at Nannie Inez in Austin, examined artworks depicting the classic Greek epic The Odyssey. “I wanted to portray as simply as possible how much being in love can color the world around you,” he explains. “Something just felt right about Calypso on the beach watching Odysseus leave her.” From there, Alvarez sketches potential motifs, often returning to the human figure, which “transcends language, articulating physically what we cannot say,” he notes. He then hones color to capture emotional essence. For “Deseo,” he favored earth tones calling to mind flushed skin, pulling from ancient Roman frescoes and Renaissance paintings. Since he returned home, his work has become in many ways a vehicle for Texas’ own mythology. “It feels like something that fits in the borderlands, exploring how we let different cultures thrive together,” says Alvarez. “I think I keep painting something I’m hoping for, striving to find that thing that connects us all under the skin.”

he owners of this home outside Dallas subscribe to the maxim that a great house begins with three things: location, location, location. So when the time came to purchase a new residence to accommodate their active lifestyle and rambunctious young sons, they were willing to overlook dim rooms wrapped in brown-oak paneling in order to score an idyllic setting on the banks of a pictureperfect lake. “It’s completely covered by trees and the kids can go fishing for perch and bass in the backyard,” says the wife. “We joke that someday the boys might be able to cast from the back porch.” Trouble was, the home’s existing architecture seemed designed to block out that scene, so the couple began to envision opening up the entire back wall of the house to create a seamless flow between indoors and out. But before they embarked on a renovation, they made yet another compromise: living in the residence for three years without changing a thing, in order to compile a comprehensive list of every detail they wanted to improve. “They really wanted this house to be about them,” says designer Traci Connell, the eventual recipient of that list. “I know people always say that, but for almost every single piece of this home, there was a function—a reason why.” And for nearly every design detail, that reason was durability. “It has to be tough enough to handle two little boys and a 90-pound dog—plus dozens of friends and family,” the husband adds. And when the couple emphasized they didn’t want many accessories, Connell, working with designer Jessie Jones, knew she needed to think differently, “creating ‘wow’ factors architecturally,” she says. Connell and builder Eddie Servigon, whose project manager was Bernie Kothe, began by opening up the main floor’s compartmentalized living spaces for more

natural light and backyard views. “I knew right away the wall between the kitchen nook and dining room had to go,” says Connell. That created a full view from the kitchen, soon emphasized by a 16-foot-wide folding glass wall between the dining room and adjacent covered patio. Connell lightened the foyer by replacing the staircase’s heavy wooden handrail and balusters with delicate iron versions, and then replaced faux marble floors, fluted columns, wainscoting, dentil moldings and carved-wood fireplace mantels throughout with a simple yet impactful mix of high-contrast finishes, which she likens to a man’s suit. “The jacket and pants are the white walls and trim,” Connell notes, “while the shirt is the white-oak cabinetry in the kitchen and master bathroom, flooring and furniture pieces—and the tie is represented by the matte-black finishes.” The latter appears on door and cabinet hardware, light fixtures, fireplace surrounds and a few key furnishings. The palette is light on color and heavy on texture, incorporated in the form of sisal rugs, woven-rush chair seats, dimensional tile and an eye-catching array of light fixtures, including a pair of tiered rattan pendants hanging above the dining room’s 14-foot-long table—a custom design so massive “it took seven guys to carry it into the house,” the husband notes. In the kitchen, Connell injected warmth with a white-oak vent hood and matching island cabinetry, floating shelves flanking a tall arched window, and storefront-style oak pantry doors—all subtle, streamlined takes on farmhouse style selected to honor the wife, who was raised in a family of farmers in a small west Texas town. For the husband, Connell decked out a hidden wet bar with a kegerator, wine fridge and ample bottle storage, plus butcher-block countertops, a shimmery wallcovering and bold backsplash tile. “He wanted everything under the sun,” she laughs. And for the couple’s sons, she made everything in the house durable and kid-friendly, choosing Crypton fabric for the living areas’ light sofas and armchairs, topping woven end tables with wipeable glass, and even sizing the kitchen island to accommodate tiny step stools. But one detail in particular best embodies Connell’s commitment to creating a truly personal design: In the heart of the home, above the family room’s fireplace mantel, she hung a series of 12 artworks commissioned to reflect her clients’ unique passions, values and history. “Each piece represents something about them,” Connell explains, from abstract takes on old family portraits to a nod to one son’s love of the solar system. They’re the marks of a designer who listened well to the owners’ story before creating a backdrop for their next chapter.
