Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beautyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

When did you open? Our design gallery opened this February. We were lucky enough to secure a space adjacent to The Menil Collection in a very special part of Houston. My co-conspirator, Michael Landrum, and I are both design professionals: We became friends after frequent collaborations. We have each curated our own collections of design objects and our like-minded vision seemed to naturally extend to a design gallery space. Tell us about Tienda X. Our design mantra is “skip everything in the middle.” You will find humble raw-pine-plywood architectural components mixed with chiseled marble floors and artist-made figural hardware. The space conveys a sense of exuberant minimalism, which we quite like. On the floor: We are more focused on important or unusual 20th-century modern and contemporary work alongside international antiques, as long as they have a sort of panache. Our edited selection will include pieces by Christopher Kreiling, James Brummett, Warbach, Garza Marfa and our own studio line of commissionable pieces. What makes your space different? We are creating an experience rather than a showroom. Margaret Naeve opened her dream-come-true antiques shop, M. Naeve, nearly 10 years ago. “I have always been excited about investing in Houston’s cultural landscape,” explains Naeve. Her showroom is a trusted source by area design professionals for authentic antique objects and furnishings, curating her offerings from places like France, Belgium, Sweden and New York. What began as a small boutique grew into Naeve’s realization of her passion for interior design. “For me, interior design is not a career but a lifestyle,” she explains. “A home is not simply where we live but a feeling.” After relocating to a bigger space, the shop is able to accommodate her ever-growing edit of antiques, matched by contemporary artisan finds, and her new custom upholstery line. “We are working with some incredible American-made lines with exclusive offerings in the Texas market,” says Naeve regarding her assemblage, which now includes cult-favorite Egg Collective in a first extension outside of its New York studio. Barbara Davis Gallery and David Shelton Gallery are non-negotiable stops on a visit to Houston. 5 p.m. Just before closing, peruse The Menil Collection. The space and exhibitions are unrivaled. If you have time, visit the bookstore or the awe-inspiring Rothko Chapel next door. 6 p.m. If you need a little pampering, drop by the chic Studio A Salon and get a

blowout from David. He will keep you looking fresh for the rest of the evening. 6:30 p.m. It’s about time for wine! 13 Celsius is my favorite spot to enjoy a glass of vino. The lighting and the space are near perfection, and the staff really knows their stuff. 8 p.m. For dinner, make a reservation at Armandos—you can’t leave Houston without some decent Mexican food. If you go on a Thursday, the restaurant turns into one of Houston’s best dance floors. Expect to disco into morning.

I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

This sophisticated home in Houston greets guests with its gracious lot, majestic trees and semicircular drive. Designer Julie Dodson honored the home’s elegant exterior with fun and fresh French-style interiors.

fter the birth of their first child, a young Houston couple knew the time had come for them to move. Living in a smaller garden home, they felt the need to look for something a bit more substantial to accommodate their growing family. “We needed a more adult home and began to think about practical things like school systems, a yard and more space for entertaining,” says the wife. An element of sentimentality also factored into the push for a change, with the husband wanting to return to the lush part of Houston that reminded him of his happy childhood. The couple’s search ended with a French-style residence fronted by a semicircular drive and majestic magnolia trees. Built in the late 1990s and originally designed by Sullivan, Henry, Oggero & Associates, the two-story house with flanking one-story wings perfectly suited the couple’s needs. To help create an interior that lived up to the home’s elegant architecture, the couple enlisted designer Julie Dodson, whose imaginative interpretations of European flair have generated a fan base of admirers. “I love to design in the French style, but in fun and fresh ways,” says Dodson of her signature style and chic portfolio of work that attracted the couple’s attention. Adds the wife: “It’s very dramatic but in a quiet way.” In the beginning, the couple expressed their goal of simply just wanting to replace the floors, although a new paint job would also be in order. Dodson went to work swapping out the scoredconcrete flooring downstairs with smoked-French-oak planks that “lend a sense of history and old-world French

charm to the house,” she says. Turning her attention to the paint, Dodson concocted a plan to “use white throughout but to inject it with pops of blue, coral and lilac, using black as an accent,” she says. The result is a breezy, up-to-date vibe that reflects the couple’s aesthetic. “They’re really cool people,” Dodson says, referring to the music-loving pair who are big Led Zeppelin buffs. These updates, however, had the unexpected effect of the couple reassessing their original goal. “That’s when things started to snowball,” says the wife. Dodson adds: “They saw how fresh the house was starting to look, but were also seeing how things like the older oiledbrass doorknobs weren’t matching the crisp white walls and new floors.” The homeowners realized that if they wanted to make significant changes, now was the time. Dodson was ready for the challenge, assuming the role of project manager in addition to designer. “Ultimately,

nothing in this house was untouched,” she says. Even the clients’ furniture had to go. “We decided to get rid of everything and start over,” says the wife. Dodson set the stage in the foyer with a console from Cuff Home in Los Angeles, a B Kelley Antiques mirror from the Marburger Farm Antique Show and stools from Edit. In the kitchen, the design overhaul included installing custom antiqued cabinetry and granite countertops and punching out a niche in a wall, where Dodson nudged in a blue-painted cabinet from Joyce Horn Antiques. She also took the necessary steps to make the eating and living spaces at the back of the house family-friendly for everyone, dogs included. The designer selected an off-white indooroutdoor fabric for the skirted benches at the breakfast table, for example, and covered a white sofa in the family room in indoor-outdoor fabric, as well—in the event one of the family’s two Labrador retrievers chooses to use it as a napping spot.

Accommodating the homeowners’ request for a more adult home, Dodson rose to the occasion in the formal living and dining rooms. “I envisioned the living room as a place where my clients can entertain and sit with friends for an after-dinner cocktail,” Dodson says. She anchored the area with a hand-knotted antique rug and accessorized the space with pink and lilac pillows to reflect the dreamy hues in a painting just opposite; light emanates from silver lamps on white-lacquered side tables. “I think of lighting as jewelry for a home,” says Dodson, who also added gold lamps to the dining room, which she visualized as a Parisian circus. “I upholstered the walls in linen to create a tent-like feeling,” she explains. Overhead, the designer swathed the ceiling in a shimmery striped-silk fabric.

Color also invigorates the master bedroom, which Dodson made plush with lavender cotton-velvet upholstery on the chairs and a white tufted-twill headboard. She then hung antique pink-and-lavender screens on the wall and cushioned the floor with wall-to-wall white carpet to create a serene space that serves as a quintessential retreat, but with a little extra oomph. Throughout their home, this Houston couple has indeed come a long way from their original goal, and they are enjoying a colorful transformation that enhances their lives and matches their playful personality. “We were willing to try new things,” the wife says. “Now, our home feels very light and clean and has a more sophisticated look, which is exactly what we needed now that we have a family.”

strive to create and share beauty,” says Austin-based studio artist Meredith Pardue, known for her colorful exploration of botanical shapes and a compelling, almost melodic, sense of form and composition. “For me, painting is as innate a function as dancing would be for a dancer.” After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Pardue followed this innate compulsion around the country—from New York, to Portland, to her home state of Louisiana, and to and from Texas, where this mother-of-two now happily resides. Those self-proclaimed “gypsy years” opened her mind and polished her singular sense of purpose as an artist. Pardue believes her own art is about the physical process of painting, as opposed to a cerebral idea, and her canvases strike a delicate balance between chaotic and controlled mark making. What a viewer might describe as negative space—the catalyst to harmonious tension in Pardue’s work—is actually the last thing that goes into a painting. The artist says, “If there is a narrative to my pieces, it’s found in that relationship between the so-called positive and negative space.” Using mediums such as marble dust, charcoal and oil bars—pastel-like tubes of the sludge recovered during paint making—Pardue

experiments with mixed media and encaustic paints. While she began her career as a figure painter, “soon the figure became irrelevant to the marks I was making,” explains the artist, who defines her work as lyrical abstraction. And, although her large-scale, multidimensional pieces may recall images of biological discovery, nature remains merely a point of departure in her work. Pardue recently completed an exhibit for Houston’s Laura Rathe Fine Art, entitled “The Body Electric” and inspired by Walt Whitman’s “I Sing the Body Electric.” Like a poet, but with paint rather than words, the artist strives to scratch below the surface of her work’s outward beauty to explore something much deeper and more meaningful. “If the body is a means to the soul, then the object of art is a means to the spirit of that work,” she says. “This body of work is a celebration of that beautiful, tactile idea.”

BALANCING ACT CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY ELEMENTS STRIKE A GRACEFUL NOTE IN A LIGHT AND AIRY DALLAS HOUSE FOR A COUPLE LOOKING TO DOWNSIZE.

o say designer Cynthia Collins and her client began on the same page would be an understatement. In early discussions about a new home in Dallas for the client and her husband, “We had a lot of the same ideas,” says Collins, “and were reading each other from the beginning.” They came to one of their first meetings toting similar color and fabric choices and had “both clipped several of the same photos from magazines,” recalls the wife. Kismet also seemed to be at play when, during a meeting with architect David Stocker, Collins showed him photos of houses she liked. “He pointed to one and said, ‘That’s one of my projects,’ ” she remembers. Add to the mix builder Clay Snelling, landscape architect Bill Bauer of The Garden Design Studio and landscape installer Britt Johnson of Britton & Associates, and the stage was set.

Architecturally, the clients envisioned a smaller yet brighter and airier house blending contemporary and traditional elements. “We wanted a lot of light,” says the wife. “We also wanted to downsize and have everything we need to live on the first floor.” Stocker, working with associate Philip Pitzer, opted for a contemporary riff on classic Georgian architecture. “Often with Georgian architecture, you get a kind of a box with layers creating a dark middle,” he explains. “This home is kind of a stretched Georgian, so you can see through fairly easily.” Stocker relied on a restrained palette, choosing slate for the roof and painted brick for the exterior, another nod in the Georgian direction. The brick provides subtle texture, allowing shadow to play across the façade. In keeping with the home’s pared-down classicism, simple columns

flank the entrance. “Stripping them down brought us to more contemporary detailing,” he says. “Sometimes mixing elements can make it seem like they are duking it out. You have to find a commonality to them.” The graceful balance struck by the architecture yielded ideal conditions for similar interiors. “The house reads more contemporary, helping give the couple’s art more of an edge and making the timeless pieces look fresher,” says Collins, “but the traditional moldings and mantels suit the antiques.” Coming from a more traditional house, the homeowners were ready for a little bit more fun. To achieve this, Collins repurposed much of the family’s existing furniture—in addition to incorporating new finds and custom pieces—including reupholstering a pair of custom chairs in the living room in a bold chinoiserie pattern that

echoes the wife’s Rose Medallion china collection. Collins and her senior design associate, Rachel Richardson, also mixed in vintage pieces from the 1940s through the ’70s. “Sometimes it takes a combination of periods to achieve the right mix,” notes Collins. In the entrance hall, for example, the designer paired a ’40s Italian glass-and-brass piece she discovered in Paris with an antique Oushak carpet that lends visual heft to the space with its strong colors. An appealing tension between old and new also exists in the kitchen, where a beamed ceiling plays off cabinetry inlaid with stainless steel. “We started with a very flat-front design, but using the inlay meant we could have more interest and detailing,” Collins says. This posed a new challenge for Snelling. “It’s always fun to do something you’ve never done,” he says. The undertaking included

two separate subcontractors as well as a meticulous paint job. Also tricky were the corner windows in the kitchen, study and master bathroom, which required extra structural support. “The outside corner of a house has a large structural load, and to have a window in this area requires structural steel beams and columns,” Snelling explains. The home sits on more than an acre of land, so perfecting the landscape was paramount. “Sometimes just a few moves can make the difference, but those can be lost on a big lot,” says Bauer, who worked to ensure the scale of the gardens was appropriate for the size of the lot and devised an entry sequence leading from the front of the property to the front door. “It’s an open green space that’s inviting and easy to walk through,” he says. The back is equally simplistic, although the dual-level pool with a waterfall

element provides a dramatic focal point. For the plantings, white knockout roses and azaleas punctuate the intense greens of the boxwood, hawthorn, magnolias and hollies. Johnson adds, “The homeowners wanted a landscape that is low-maintenance, clean and contemporary.” With a landscape ideal for the family’s dogs and a home scaled to perfection for the couple, the wife marvels at the ease with which everything came together. “The whole team was incredible,” she says. “David listened, and Cynthia knew exactly what I wanted. We have sunshine in the front. We’ve got the loggia in the back. And the light is incredible. It really is a feel-good home.” And it’s not surprising that a project that began with a series of coincidences and a meeting of design minds resulted in a home impeccably suited to its owners. As they say, some things are just meant to be.

Landscape architect Bill Bauer of The Garden Design Studio devised a plan for the property that involved strong yet simple gestures. A crisp path of pavers makes for a graceful sequence leading from a patio outside the living room. Outdoor furnishings include an RH sofa, lounge chairs and dining chairs; a custom dining table; garden stools from Laura Lee Clark and custom Perennials pillows.

Stockerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contemporary take on classic Georgian architecture includes a colonnade composed of columns with pared-down capitals and a faĂ§ade in white-painted brick. Most of the rooms receive light from multiple exposures. ac Zamora, founder of Austin-based Variance Design, has had a lifelong fascination with living systems and the natural world. Combine this with his love of drawing and shaping materials with his hands, and it’s no surprise he became a biologist, gardener and designer of living installations found in prominent institutions like the San Diego Zoo as well as in private collections. “Nature is the blueprint,” he explains. “It inspires me to create things that are exciting to my spirit.” In addition to verdant living systems, including vertical gardens and reptile habitats with realistic hand-sculpted stone walls and tree buttress roots, Zamora also designs modern vessels, ranging in scale from a cast-stone planter the size of a tennis ball to an 8-foot-tall white aluminum planter—one of six bolted together in a zigzag pattern at a private residence. “Building habitats for plants and animals is my passion,” Zamora explains, “but minimalistic design, architecture and art also inspire me.” The multifaceted designer began producing such pieces after a fruitless search for modern planters to contrast the cacti, oak trees and other organic forms on his naturalistic 3-acre property in Austin. “I began creating molds out of leftover fiberglass and rubber, and then started casting those molds in concrete,” Zamora says. He continues to follow a similarly creative process, starting with a prototype that he then prefers to edit in a more organic and experimental than structured way. Zamora has since incorporated metal into his repertoire: The first floor of his two-story studio is equipped with a CNC plasma cutting machine, welding equipment and other tools that allow him to experiment with imaginative new constructs. One example is a giant wave pendulum, which Zamora calls a “kinetic sculpture,” featuring a series of steel spheres and showcasing the designer’s custom metal handiwork. While Zamora isn’t sure what he’ll be inspired to create next, he’s more than happy to go with the flow and see where it takes him. “If I knew the exact path, I probably wouldn’t want to take it,” says Zamora, who charts new directions every day. “As long as I’m creating something new and exciting, I feel like I’m on track.”

urb appeal reigns supreme in Houston’s Heights neighborhood, where grand Victorians and Craftsman-style bungalows edge idyllic tree-lined streets. Most are zoned as historic, save for a pocket of homes where designer Marie Flanigan and her husband, Joe, bought a then-quirky Craftsman. “It was basically a small bungalow surrounded by much grander residences,” says Marie. “Yet it was on this big, beautiful, light-filled corner lot.” With sensitive architectural updates and a little more square footage in the right places, the Flanigans knew it could be a stunner. “The neighborhood was booming, and the project was perfect for our skills,” says Marie, who earned a

degree in architecture from Texas A&M University and immediately saw the bungalow’s potential. Best of all, it wasn’t encumbered by strict historic preservation guidelines, allowing more freedom to make decisions such as changing the façade and installing energy-efficient windows. Marie pictured the cottage with a full-width front porch, double-gable roof, and Craftsman-style architectural features both outside and indoors, as well as an airy floor plan accommodating a much larger kitchen and master suite. The plans she drafted reflected that vision, right down to astutely placed interior columns and coffered ceilings, which define activity areas in the newly opened and streamlined layout while unifying them with analogous details. “The kitchen and dining areas live within one

large space, but the kitchen’s coffered ceiling clearly outlines the fact that it serves as a unique and individual space within that larger context,” Marie notes. The couple joined forces with builder Hernan Vargas to help transform the bungalow. A series of hurdles, however, created more work than anticipated. First, they needed to move the home back from the street in order to gain room to expand. “To bump the footprint out a bit in every direction, we had to pick the house up and move it about 3 feet to the east and away from the street to respect the city’s setback code,” Vargas explains. “They lifted the house onto railroad ties and used hydraulic jacks to slide it over.” Then, another hurdle appeared. “To accommodate the home’s longer and broader footprint, we had to raise the roof,” Vargas adds. “It was the most difficult structural accommodation we made, but also the most significant. It changed the façade and the nature of every room inside—all for the better.”

The exterior is now statelier, while interior rooms seem larger thanks to taller ceilings. Although they originally planned to sell the house, it began to feel like home when Joe and his father laid the brick foundation for the porch columns. “That’s when I knew the house had to be ours,” Marie says. “The project was such a family affair, and I’d just found out I was pregnant, so I figured it was meant to be.” In hindsight, deciding to keep the home later in the process made the earlier decisions easier. “We were about halfway through the project, and it was too late to change anything,” the designer says. “I was so glad I didn’t know sooner, because I made smart, fast decisions. When a home is yours, you agonize over every detail.” Furnishing the home was less clear-cut, considering Marie and Joe have differing tastes. “I appreciate contemporary elements, and Joe prefers traditional elements, but we both prefer a combination of multiple styles,” says Marie,

who channeled her inner mix-master with a layered blend of pieces old, new and somewhere in-between. “A simple set of rules prevailed: We only used things we both love, that are super-comfortable, and that are family-friendly and cleanable.” An oak-framed armchair in the living room “could be from the 1940s or now,” the designer explains. She paired the time-defying piece with a sleek oak bench with a woven seat, a coffee table-turned-toy-storage chest upholstered in waxed leather, and a newly re-covered sofa the couple bought as newlyweds. Mixed styles grace every room. In the kitchen, now four times larger, classic recessed-paneled cabinets enjoy a dose of Craftsman styling from the coffered ceiling that also defines the space, while wainscoting topped with dentil molding gives the contiguous dining area definition and a period demeanor. In the study, a campaign desk, which Marie designed after seeing a sleek new version, is made from rustic oak with an antiqued-brass frame for a more organic attitude, while a sleek white-lacquered console, also Marie’s design, has an earthy wood frame. “They were designed to be sleek and streamlined in structure and then finished in a rich combination of both luxurious and rustic materials,” Marie explains. Ultimately, Marie believes it’s the details that make a project, and in this case, it was the detail of raising the roof that had the most impact. “Now, we have a huge unfinished attic we didn’t expect. But we don’t need any more space,” she says, laughing, “yet.” The family may not yet need the additional space, but they are certainly enjoying the home’s stunning new façade and, perhaps most of all, its intact historic charm. Says Marie: “Rather than demolish the home, we opted to restore it, unveiling the natural beauty that lives within.”
