owl This chaise lounge/ottoman combo is as cool as a cucumber—and named after one, too. La Pepino has a touch of Memphis in its whimsical geometry, and hints of Art Deco in its botanical profile. Three comfy bolsters nestle into channels, forming supportive cushions for the seat; the footrest sports a single bolster. Alfredo Lopez makes the pieces by hand in his Barcelona studio, and while the plywood frame looks particularly fetching covered in deep-green velvet, custom options are also possible. owlfurnitureandobjects.com

layer For 10 years, Christopher Raeburn’s eponymous eco-conscious fashion brand has repurposed surplus fabrics and garments, creating one-of-a-kind parkas and accessories from offcuts and uniforms. More recently, he and friend Benjamin Hubert, founder of design studio Layer, came upon recycled parachutes and hatched a plan to take things a bit further than the usual chic tote bag. The result is the limitededition Canopy collection, comprising a rocking chair and screen. The duo deftly wind ripstop nylon textile around the welded-steel frames, produced by Allermuir in polished, raw, or powder-coated finish. Continuing the relaxed-modern design language across the Hado collection, Hado benches add a touch of understated elegance and conviviality to lobbies, alcoves and other informal gathering spaces. An array of sizes - including square models and an accompanying ottoman - provide the versatility to seat one or many, while the Scandinavian-inspired wood leg design beautifully complements lounge seating and table counterparts.

fabric & wa llcovering kaza concrete Aimee Munro channels the bold colors and aggressive geometry of the Bauhaus in Diverge. The five-pattern series, which earned the Sydney-based Gray Puksand project leader top honors in last year’s Academy Kaza Tile Design Competition, is formed from concrete, an oft-used medium of the ever-influential school. Munro envisions the 15 ¾-inch-square tiles as modules of dimensional wall art to be mixed or matched at will. Imagine if you will the rectilinear relief of Diverge V alternating with the circle-ina-square of Diverge II, atop the converging diagonals of Diverge I. sahco At this year’s Paris Déco Off, the label inaugurated its brand-new creative team— design director Anna Vilhelmine Ebbesen and art director Vincent Van Duysen—by christening the duo’s debut effort. The immersive display at music venue Salle Érard included upholstery fabrics emphasizing texture and tactility. Abstracted pictorial leaves cross the linen-viscose ground of Opal, while cotton-viscose-polyester Jade recalls an irregular checkerboard. Viscose dominates the thick bouclé and chenille yarns of Safire, the coarse surface lending a handmade feel, and shiny Cupro rayon brightens the cotton-linen blend of Shell. sahco.com

PAOLA LENTI

paola lenti designer Paola Lenti product Mandala recap When you need a space-making treatment that’s there, but almost not there, consider Mandala. Named after the circular shape that figures prominently in Hindu religious symbolism, the customizable textile consists of aluminum rings covered in Rope, the designer’s signature braided polyolefin, adjoined by flat cords of the same material but in contrasting color. “Mandala defines and identifies an area, dividing without isolating,” the designer says. Fixed to the ceiling but freeflowing at the base, the suspended rings allow light and air to pass through effortlessly. Through DDC. ddcnyc.com

MARC THORPE

febrik Working on a project in northern Italy, Marc Thorpe was captivated by fields of maize that dotted the local landscape. But when the New York designer looked closer and considered the leafy outer shell of an ear of corn, up sprouted Husk, a range of knitted upholstery fabrics. Three-dimensional ribs of seemingly random thickness make the 10 colorways appear like simple solids. But again, upon closer inspection, tonal contrasts between the stitching and base become visible. “The formal language of the textile plays with the rhythm of light and shadow,” Thorpe explains. The super-soft cover contains an especially stretchy blend of wool, polyamide, polyester, and elastane. febrik.com 62

Using a handmade process modeled after painting methods, the pigments are suspended in water to cover the 8-inch-square, ½-inchthick tiles. “The proprietary technique allows the color to flow freely in the cement, so no two tiles will ever be exactly alike,” says Dillon, graphic designer for the Alabama-based manufacturer. carnegie There’s a new incarnation of the textile specialist’s signature fiber—and this is one designers will take sitting down. Xorel Knit, Carnegie’s first material engineered specifically for upholstery, combines high performance with the versatility of a knitted fabric. “Historically, Xorel’s main impact has been in vertical applications such as wall and panel covering,” chief creative officer Heather Bush says. “Taking our unique yarn and wrangling it into a knit construction has been no easy feat.” The sustainable polyethylene construction debuts with four patterns in multiple colorways for a total of 27 options, each equipped to meet the stretch-and-recover demands of modern seating. carnegiefabrics.com

architex The fabrics aren’t vinyl, but the vibe certainly is. Some Like It Mod, a four-pattern riff on Bowie and the Beatles, takes London back to hip Carnaby Street days. Good Day Sunshine sports a constellation of circles inscribed with micro-patterns and placed against a dotty ground. Lucy in the Sky is a meandering grid of stylized sunbursts—or are they flowers? Space Oddity charts a random galaxy of graphic fragments. City-shaded neutrals and punchy brights figure in the 30 colorways, while the cloth itself is a blend of cotton, postconsumer-recycled polyester, and solution-dyed nylon. architex-ljh.com.

dedar The latest textile from the family-run brand helmed by siblings Caterina and Raffaele Fabrizio, Hana-bi (Japanese for “fireworks”) fairly bursts with energy. The over-40-year-old company based in Appiano Gentile, Italy, revisits the abstract floral motif of an archival design, Dalie Papaveri Tulipani, cunningly woven with a fil coupé technique but now on a striped base for a refreshed jacquard effect. In polyester, viscose, cotton, and silk. dedar.com

Conceived to reduce dependence on finite resources, the high-performance Volar Bio collection utilizes renewable plant-based materials: corn-based content, polycarbonatepolyurethane resin, and wood pulp. The line, launched during London’s 100% Design, is produced by a Japanese mill using a proprietary process and features a matte finish. ultrafabricsinc.com

The popular song by the Beatles inspired the retro Let It Bee collection (the extra “e” a nod to the Italian brand’s logo). The Swinging Sixties was the reference point for double-fired, gloss-finish ceramic tiles in five colors including bold brick red, green, yellow, and indigo plus a neutral white. The half-moon and circular patterns of the pop art–inflected tiles just might start a revolution.

PATCHWORK

“We challenged ourselves to create performance products that felt handmade” FABR IC & WALLcovering

Artisanal antiquity meets modern-day functionality in Craft Work, an homage to generations of quilters, weavers, and embroiderers conceived under the direction of creative director Dorothy Cosonas. And while the inspiration is old-world, here’s the irony: It’s an upto-date assortment of high-performance fabrics, even meeting the criteria for high-turnover health-care environments. Among upholstery options is Patchwork, a newfangled spin on quilting that replaces individual swatches with a network of 36 interwoven patterns. The polyester-nylon cover with stain-resistant finish is bleach cleanable and withstands 100,000 double-rubs on the Wyzenbeek scale. knolltextiles.com

ASTRID BEDROOM IN WALNUT

ENTWINE DINING

sukrachand Robert Sukrachand looked back in time to create his Mirazzo collection, which reimagines the street furniture he admired during his childhood visits to Thailand. The Brooklyn-based designer’s medium of choice? Terrazzo, a material at once classic and of-the-moment—and, Sukrachand realized, the ideal way to use leftover glass scraps from his recent Gem and Volume mirror collections. The perfectly modern result is a nearly 52-inch-long bench that embeds colorful mirror shards into a stone aggregate–resin mix. A table, 36 inches across and 16 high, rounds out the collection. sukrachand.com

STEPS 1 X 12

furniture “I treat my materials like living organisms. They represent the opportunity to merge with other elements in various ways, and their fusion stamps the final piece with its unique character”

twenty first gallery German-born designer Valentin Loellmann, based in Maastricht, likes to explore the boundaries that differentiate art object from furniture. He regularly displays the fruits of his explorations at both Art Basel and PAD, and now he shows at Tribeca’s esteemed Twenty First Gallery. Each handmade object is unique, signed and dated by the designer. Blue Brass tops a patinated brass base with a cerulean ovoid of epoxy resin spanning 59 inches. The legs and interior doors of his 76-inch-high Brass cabinet glow warmly around a fumed walnut carcass. The Copper dining set juxtaposes similar materials with strikingly different results: the simple arcs of its bench and dining table are created by layering charred oak atop polished and patinated copper. And Steps 1 X 12, in mirror-polished stainless steel and crotch walnut, is a freestanding staircase for use as a ladder...or simply as sculpture. 21stgallery.com

ALFABETA

STÉPHANE PARMENTIER

SCALA

giobagnara Creative director Stéphane Parmentier got his start working for Karl Lagerfeld before pivoting into architecture and eventually taking the helm of this Genoa, Italy–based manufacturer. And it shows in his fashionably tailored designs. His Aurealia seating translates the grace of Greek columns into stools and benches covered in printed calfskin, suede, or nappa. Alfabeta’s leather-bound legs feature unconventional proportions and Memphis-esque voluptuousness. The stacked base and ribbed structure of his famed Scala stool is now available in travertine, equally lovely indoors or alfresco. And Parmentier’s studies of traditional Ligurian fishing villages, particularly the streets paved in nubby stones, lead to the creation of Tellaro, a wall-mounted nightstand embellished with asymmetrical leather shapes. giobagnara.com

molo Bend space and save time with Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen’s Aluminum Textile Soft collection. The titular material is nonwoven spun polyethylene, coated with a micro-layer of aluminum that not only reflects light but also develops a patina over time. The honeycomb fabrication takes the form of modular, flexible bench/walls that can swell, swerve, and compress as needed thanks to a multi-patented system of magnetic end panels. Seats and stools fan out into circles, their yielding tops gently softening with use. Ideal for the open-plan office, the recyclable textile is surprisingly durable no matter the application, as it resists water, tearing, and dust. molodesign.com

INTERCHANGE LUCA NICHETTO

sancal diseño

Usually the commute is the least inspiring aspect of the workday. But Luca Nichetto found a muse in Milan’s Turati metro station for his Interchange bench/tables, whose form honors the train depot’s lattice ceiling. Steel legs in a textured black epoxy finish serve as a base for a solid-ash lattice available in two sizes and eight stain colors. The series encompasses dividing panels; fabric, vinyl, or leather seat cushions; and various iterations of tabletops offered in natural or stained ash and lacquered MDF. A fastening system secures elements through the lattice holes, creating as many options as commuters pressed into a rush-hour car. sancal.com

Created by 13&9 in collaboration with Fractals Research and Mohawk Group, Relaxing Floors is the culmination of art, science and human-centered design based on fractal patterns with stress-reductive qualities.

tsar carpets Teresa Ceberek wanted to do more than just pay tribute to tropical waters with her X-Materiality collection; she also wanted to embody and protect their liquid depths. The result of those ambitions is Lagoon, a rug that replicates wave forms in calming blue hues and varying pile heights, scattered with sea-green felted details mimicking islands or reefs. The floor covering is primarily composed of New Zealand wool and produced at Tsar’s manufacturing facility, which has its own filtration plant—an extra step that reduces excess dyes from spoiling the very water that inspired the design. tsarcarpets.com

“I wanted to create daredevil acrobatic movement and graceful energy” Before starting her Portland, Oregon, wall coverings studio, Avery Thatcher worked as a tile installer. That experience came in handy when designing Trapeze, with an undulating pattern and hexagonal format intended for random or rotating arrangements. Handmade in Mexico, each indoor/ outdoor encaustic tile, approximately 9 inches across, is hydraulic-pressed one at a time. The mix of Portland cement, marble powder, and natural pigments is finished in a no-fire process that creates a soft matte patina. The tiles come in three colorways: Black Blue, White Blanc, and White Terra-Cotta. And when placed across the walls or floors of hospitality, residential, or even wet applications like bathrooms or pool patios, the rippling motifs look just like the titular performers, interlocking with the greatest of ease. jujupapers.com

Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay set up their North London studio Raw-Edges upon graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2007. Since then, witty confections like a chest of drawers that resembles a stacked-up pile of boxes have found their way into the collections of MoMA, the Vitra Design Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Now the duo’s cannily counterintuitive impulses get channeled into floor covering. Backstitch flips the script, proposing that the underside of a rug is where the true beauty can be found. The patterns Calm, Busy, and Composition move from order to frenzy, respectively, with hand embroidery across kilim grounds, in green or brick hues of new wool. gan-rugs.com

JABLINES I

tai ping

Paris-based Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance has crafted interiors for Air France and London’s hip Sketch teahouse, bespoke displays for Yves Saint Laurent Beauté, and furniture collections for heavy-hitters like Bernhardt and Ligne Roset. For his Raw collection of rugs, however, he went back to the start—not of his storied career, but of Earth itself. Five patterns explore the shifting grounds of tectonic plates, topographical patterns, and the seemingly random formations of geodes. The shaped Hov rug recreates jagged mountain ranges in the manufacturer’s proprietary Field performance yarn, which looks sharp but feels soft to the touch. Jablines is a carved-out cliff of a rug, in a combination of silk, wool, and Field or pure wool. And Taramsa captures the hardness of rock in a cosseting tonal composition of Field and jute. taipingtent.com

lighting and light Materiality gets downright poetic with Pebble, a sconce for wall or ceiling by Lukas Peet. The malleabillity of molten glass allowed the designer, a Design Academy Eindhoven alum, to experiment extensively in creating a collection of organic forms whose shapes seem to vary depending on the viewing angle. Peet also wanted his primordial orbs to glow, a characteristic he claims adds to their “profoundness” and gives them a soul. We appreciate the way the range of colors (pearl, travertine, slate, citrine) and finishes (opaque, translucent, glossy, etched) honors the diversity of real stones found in nature, smoothed and worn by the flow of water. Also available as a pendant fixture formed from two fused pebbles. andlight.ca

lighting GUSTON

In the late 1960s and early ’70s, abstract expressionist painter Philip Guston brought emotional, simple forms to the busy buzz of the New York School. James Dieter looked to the artist for inspiration when conceiving Guston, a charming and energetic chandelier. Aluminum bands formed from solid stock intersect at points, balancing in slots at right angles before bending upon themselves. Glass discs backed with acrylic punctuate the ends, serving as diffusers, while the LED current is carried wirelessly through the frame. Finishes include plating in sterling silver, brass, and nickel, along with anodized neutrals and brighter colors. A more tactile variant, Cross, pairs soft felt with hard geometries. For those looking for another work of art to hang on their walls, artful sconces are also available. jamesdieter.co

“I wish to design something that I can’t think of. If I can already imagine it, then it is less exciting for me” —Oki Sato, Nendo founder

Ideal for illuminating a work of art…yet an artwork in its own right. Sawaru by Nendo is graceful in its sculptural simplicity, consisting of two cylinders conjoined in perpendicular configuration. One is the source of a focused light beam, the other its support. The angle at which they intersect can be adjusted (to 25, 40, and 60 degrees) in order to change the direction of the beam, its intensity and color temperature regulated via a pedal dimmer. Aim Sawaru at a painting, a piece of furniture, or an interesting architectural detail; brighten an unloved corner, niche, or hallway; or use several to wash a wall. The glass portion extends slightly beyond the aluminum one, creating a sort of halo effect. NIAMH BARRY

“I made this piece exactly my height, as I want it to have the same impact on a viewer as the proximity of another person would”

niamh barry With Brutalist overtones and poetic underpinnings, the Underneath lamp by Dublinbased Niamh Barry was conceived as a threedimensional drawing in bronze and light. Her process relies foremost on balance, movement, and proportion to create functional objects that transcend mere utility. Patinated bronze and LEDs combine to create a striking form that conveys physical strength—an equipoise between struggles both internal and external. The designer says Underneath is best viewed in a round room, in order to fully take in the form’s nuances. And just like Barry herself, the piece stands 61 inches high. Through Maison Gerard.

zazzeri It’s a case of back to the future. To honor the company’s 90th anniversary, architect Fabrizio Batoni reinterpreted one of its more prescient models from the 1970s: Junko Enomoto’s Junko Mix. This revolutionary product was among the first single-lever mixers on the market; that its sleek and curvy handle

kitchenbath operated with a single gesture was in itself groundbreaking. This new incarnation, JK21, is made of solid stainless steel and engineered for more efficient water consumption. The ergonomic design is now offered in several finishes (including Antracite, Carbon, and Cognac) and with a number of decorative insert options: PVD or lacquered steel in seven colors, Carrara and Nero Marquina marble, and travertine. Luxe indeed. zazzeri.us

THE NEW CLASSIC

MARCEL WANDERS

laufen For years, a series of world-class designers has been wowing us with creations in SaphirKeramik, the company’s lightweight, super-strong (as in, it has the flexural strength of steel) ceramic that can be forged into wafer-thin forms. Now Interior Design Hall of Famer Marcel Wanders unveils The New Classic, a sinuous take on bygone shapes. The bath-product collection sits somewhere between Boho and cosmopolitan, simultaneously harkening back to eras past while satisfying contemporary needs and tastes. (The material’s thinness turns retro curves into something novel.) Wanders, as always, elevates the design by pairing gleaming white ceramic with more organic cabinets in wood. He calls his rounded forms “more feminine,” an expression of a new language. laufen.com

“The poetry of opposites — the balance that arises from the superposition of geometric shapes — creates a perfect and proportional relationship between the parts” K ITCHEN bath If loving crazy-bold color is wrong, then we don’t want to be right! Especially when it’s courtesy of a knockout combination of shape and technology. The Albume freestanding washbasin by Carlo Colombo balances a transparent colored basin on a tapering opaque column. The unit is made of glossy-finish Christalmood, the company’s patented high-performance transparent polyester resin. Choose between two bowl shapes—sloped-side or rounded—and from a spectrum of hues (including Ambra, Lime, Petrolio, Cobalto, etc.) to create solid or two-hue configurations. Or consider a base in Bianco Carrara or Nero Marquina marble which, when paired with the colorful tops, create a mixed metaphor that works. antoniolupi.it

dornbracht An ancient material gives this popular bathroom fittings family a futuristic refresh. Sieger Design’s minimalist CL.1, an instant classic from 2015, sports new handles in clear or colored Swarovski crystal embellished with a filigree fluting. These impart a jewel-like high note to the strong and modern base, creating an almost emotional tension between them. Owing to its transparency, the glass interacts with ambient light to create prismatic streaks of color across the sink or counter. A new finish, dark platinum matte (warm and slightly brushed), is even more enigmatic than the polished chrome, able to work well in today’s darker and moodier bath interiors. dornbracht.com

bertocci Before there were disruptors, there were innovators. Among them: Bertocci, an Italian designer/manufacturer currently celebrating its 90th anniversary. Never shy design-wise, the Florence-based company has long been known for dynamic colors and finishes (as demonstrated in its ads from the 1970s), a tradition upheld to this day. The Moon collection of bath accessories by Phicubo Design Studio debuted in 2018 with round shapes based on the eponymous celestial body. In this update, the brass forms have been bent, adding arcs, triangles, and squares to the mix while retaining the striking simplicity of the circular original. dzek Imagine an intense battle between man and nature—this one with a beautiful outcome. ExCinere (“out of the ashes” in Latin) is a collection of volcanic ash–glazed tiles suited for interior and exterior applications ranging from counters to wall treatments. The raw material comes from Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, where Formafantasma co-founder Andrea Trimarchi grew up. He and partner Simone Farresin collaborated with Dzek to tap into the ash’s unique properties when used as a glaze. It took three years of exploding, imploding, and cracking prototypes to get the tricky process under control. Just 8mm thin, the 47mm-wide tiles come in two lengths (9.5 and 20cm) and four glazes, which vary based on the quantity, particle size, and density of the volcanic matter. dzekdzekdzek.com

marotte Typically, the phrase “boys and their toys” is used, with an eye roll, to describe an obsessive relationship between men and technology. But when the man in question is Patrick Jouin and the “toy” is a state-of-the-art machine, the cheeky phrase takes on positive connotations. Rencontre is a collection of sculpted MDF panels that challenge conventions of surface and ornamentation. Leveraging digital modeling and an army of new techniques, Jouin created 16 designs (including Bas Relief and Sillage) in eight evocative colors (from terra-cotta to burnt wood) whose outcome depends on the direction, angle, and speed of the machining tools across the MDF. The textural patterns sculpt ambient and focused light in a manner that’s as dynamic and lively as the spaces for which the product is intended. marotte.fr

“Flek is the culmination of our commitment to sustainability and the product of our drive to constantly innovate” FLEK IN ICED MINT AND ARCTIC BLUE

3form Doubling down on its commitment to sustainability, 3form has developed Flek, a line of terrazzo-like panels that repurpose trimmings from the manufacture of the company’s Varia Ecoresin. These leftovers are ground, sorted, and then encased in resin to create a product comprising 70 percent recycled content. (It also renders Varia a zero-waste product.) Designed by Christian Darby, the panels are available in clear, blue, green, and pink tones. The material’s translucency offers the possibility of backlighting and makes Flek a fresh and welcome choice for use as dividers and enclosures: They provide privacy while still offering visual connection between spaces. Compatible with all 3form hardware systems, the GreenGuard-certified panels are color customizable, too. In ¼-, ⅜-, and ½-inch gauges. 3-form.com

Fueling Possibilities¨

lutron

In recent years, lighting has become downright philosophical, with manufacturers seeking ways to create atmospheres that go beyond “lit” to something akin to “woke”: spaces that are comforting, welcoming, and engaging. At its new, 5,500-square-foot Commercial Experience Center in the NoMad neighborhood of New York City, Lutron invites architects, designers, contractors, building owners, and developers to explore the full complement of its products and systems that support this idea. At the core of the Cookfox-designed venue is the Lutron HXL approach, a human-centric system that zeroes in on the quality of light delivered by maximizing connection to the outdoors and supplementing sunshine with daylight-emulating artificial illumination. There are also adaptive personal controls, which facilitate flexible environments that allow occupants to adjust the scheme, boost efficiency, and save energy in the process. lutron.com

“The new center provides an immersive experience that reveals how lighting and controls can impact different space types and occupants’ wellbeing” —Scott Hanna, Lutron EVP

outdoor laun Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell met while getting their Masters of Architecture at the University of Austin in Texas but were ultimately drawn to Los Angeles, where they honed their skills in woodworking and metal fabrication. Two years later, the duo’s outdoor furniture brand has become a paean to their adopted hometown; titles like DeMille and Bacall figure prominently. In fact, the shorelines of the Pacific inform the wavy profile of Bobbin, a bench built from bolsters (upholstered in Perennials solution-dyed acrylic) that are threaded through stainless-steel rods and connected to aluminum side rails. Standard in brass or black finish, the customizable unit measures 84 inches long, 33 ½ wide, and 15 high. launlosangeles.com

minimalist sensibilities recap With a color as bold as orange, it only takes a trace to amaze. Massimo Castagna proves the point with a slimline sun lounger handcrafted from sipo mahogany, one of the strongest and most resilient varietals of the species. But the electric charge comes from Extetiflex, the Italian exterior-living specialist’s proprietary PVC, which promises high resistance to moisture and UV rays. The cord not only laces the seat and adjustable backrest but also appears as an accent, woven through the edge of the slender profile. A pouf, sofa, and chairs accompany the lounger, which measures 81 ½ inches long, 27 ½ wide, and 12 ½ high. Through DDC. ddcnyc.com

fire features Boldly challenging the typical firepit template, the Brooklyn-based manufacturer unveils—drumroll please—Fireroll, a curling sheet of stainless steel fitted with a 200,000BTU gas burner. “Enclosing the flame with an open wave of metal, the shape is designed to push the warm air out toward you,” says owner Elena Colombo, a classically trained sculptor. Operated via a manual pilot or electronic ignition system, the device ranges from 4 to 8 feet long, comes in five finishes, and can be further customized by adding a metal, stone, or concrete base. firefeatures.com

outdoor Mixed mediums make a fashionable confab in Tweed, a new suite of seating from Milanese industrial design firm Meneghello Paolelli Associati. Cofounders Marco Paolelli and Sandro Meneghello specified an edgy blend of teak and stainless steel. What’s unique is that the materials are not detached as independent components but instead interwoven, like fabric, to form the frame. “The metal fundamentally represents the warp, while the wood represents the weft,” the partners explain. “It’s a delicate balance between the centuries-old history of one and the contemporary/ industrial note of the other.” Padded with flow-through foam, the generously sized cushions accept the customer’s own weather-resistant covers.
