POP OF COLOR

Micah Tipler, founder of TIPLER Design, is a true believer in embracing color in the kitchen. With DacorMatch, the innovative color system introduced by leading luxury appliance brand, Dacor, you can personalize your appliances in any pantone imaginable. Show your true colors. All of them.

Micah Tipler PRINCIPAL, TIPLER DESIGN Houston, TX

H

ouston based interior designer and Dacor Design Council member, Micah Tipler, is a force in the design, architecture, procurement, showroom, development, and build industries. Her “outside of the box approach has earned her status as an industry leader, and she is applauded for the design risks she takes, including her creative use of color in kitchen projects.

“What excites my design team and our clients about DacorMatch is the capability to truly customize something.” DacorMatch allows designers and their clients to customize the kitchen like never before. “Everyone uses their kitchen in a slightly different way. Being able to tailor it to fit all of our clients’ needs has become critical to the design process,” Tipler says. The DacorMatch Color System makes it possible to paint Heritage wall ovens and ranges in any color on the spectrum. “We’ve done ranges in subdued colors, from pearl white to navy blue. But we’ve also designed fun ovens in teal, fuchsia and orange, making something really unique and special,” she shares. The process is simple. By providing Dacor with your selected color swatch, the team will match it exactly, delivering a custom appliance fit to your taste. Tipler shares from experience: “Once we’ve established a color palette for a particular project, we determine an accent color that speaks to the client. Then, we provide Dacor with a pantone number, and the team creates a sample to send us for approval. It’s been a match every time.” In addition, Dacor offers seven standard colors to choose from. “DacorMatch is truly limitless, which as a designer, is hugely exciting,” Tipler says. “Being able to specify a personalized appliance for our clients that we know they’ll enjoy with their families for years is game-changing.” From start to finish, DacorMatch appliances take six to seven weeks. Warming Drawer in DacorMatch upon special request only.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Designers are increasingly seeking out bespoke pieces for their clients, such as this bold wall treatment by MJ Atelier (right).

Welcome to our annual Luxury Report issue dedicated to luxury in all its forms and iterations. To prepare for this issue, our editors reached out to designer-friends to ask, “How do you define luxury?” It’s interesting to read their responses. Certainly, it’s not about extravagance or price. For many, it’s about comfort, calm and a sense of peace in an otherwise noisy and somewhat chaotic world. Luxury is most definitely about anything that is made with great care and an attention to detail. I think it’s also about originality, which seems to be rarer to find these days. Most anything that’s elusive or slightly out of reach can be perceived as luxurious. Of course, time is the ultimate luxury: The idea of waiting for something to be made, (while we’re all programmed for instant gratification these days) seems sumptuous. I can relate to Ken Fulk’s response—that luxury is about the little things, like the scent of fresh-clipped flowers or an unplanned Sunday spent on the sofa. Can’t count how many weekends I’ve fallen into a nap on my red English roll arm, with a paperback novel atop my lap and my two Shih Tzu’s curled up beside me. Heaven!

Fashion designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” With customization on the rise, many designers could apply the sentiment to homes outfitted with bespoke elements—including Achille Salvagni, principal of his eponymous international architectural and design practice. “In the last 10 years, my clientele has increasingly sought out homes that are oneof-a-kind,” he says. “In many ways, looking for a designer is like looking for a tailor that can make a dress that fits your body perfectly.” He cites a client who recently hired him to create a highly custom home in Mumbai, India. “She wanted a living room that was a portrait of her family,” he explains. “After interviewing

the family members, I created furniture that represents the qualities of each. A sofa embodies the personality of the father, the table is inspired by the daughter—together, all the furniture tells this family’s story.” Maria Apelo Cruz, who co-founded the decorative arts studio MJ Atelier with her husband Mike Jovanovic, also sees an increase in customers seeking one-off wallcoverings, furnishings and lighting. “We are riding the wave of designers who want to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Today’s clients are looking for conversation pieces that no one else has.” An example is the wallcovering they made for an inveterate video gamer that includes symbology from classics including Zelda, Pac-Man and Pokémon.

Cruz says that bringing a designer’s creations to life requires finding the right craftspeople, and that’s challenging. “Many aspects of quality craftsmanship take a lifetime to master—so by the time you’ve perfected your trade, it’s time to retire,” she says. “Traditionally, a lot of information was passed down through families, but these days, some of the offspring of contemporary craftspeople are pursuing other things.” To keep those skills alive, she and her husband have started

personal aspect that makes the effort and expenditure worth it. The company offers their products in bespoke sizes, colors and fabrics. “Every person has a different idea about what makes the perfect design elements. What could be better than picking your own fabrics in the color combination to make something just for you? Customization is the ultimate expression of luxury.”

Custom designs take the form of personalized wall treatments, such as the one shown on the previous page by MJ Atelier. Other examples include Hammerton Custom’s oneof-a-kind lighting fixtures (top, right); interior furnishings by Achille Salvagni (center); and personalized linens by Matouk (below, left).

a teaching guild—and to the couple’s delight, they are discovering an eager audience. “The stereotype of a millennial is a person staring at a computer screen,” Cruz says. “But we’ve found many young people who want to learn how to paint, draw and gild.” That’s not to say there’s no place for computer screens in today’s customization climate. In fact, technology is facilitating even higher levels of tailored details. “These days, we have old-world techniques and modern tools living together—you’ll find an anvil next to computer-driven cutting equipment,” says Paul Verbecky, the general manager at Hammerton Custom. “Computer modeling is enabling us to do things we couldn’t have imagined in the past—we recently created a model showing a 6,000-pound fixture that’s 25 feet at its widest point. It’s the easiest and fastest way to show how a piece like that would look in a space.” But custom design takes longer and is more expensive to produce—so why are more consumers seeking it out? George Matouk, Jr., CEO and president of the linen company that bears his family’s name, believes it’s the

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN TEAMS UP WITH PERENNIALS TO CREATE FABRICS AND RUGS THAT WORK INDOORS AND OUT. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON

Timothy Corrigan is a self-proclaimed “Perennials freak.” With the debut of his new seven-fabric, three-rug collection, Perennials by Timothy Corrigan, the celebrated designer has put his own stamp on the high-performance fabric company’s “rugged yet beautiful” ideology. Luxe got the scoop on this exciting collaboration and why indoor-outdoor textiles are the future of design. You are crazy about high-performance fabrics. I’ve been using performance textiles for years— back when they were still ugly striped canvases! I realized early on, if you don’t have to worry about how you’re living in a house then it makes such a difference. I know some people who won’t let anyone drink red wine in their home, and I hate everything about that! When it is a “look but don’t touch” zone, then you’re not comfortable, your family isn’t comfortable and your guests aren’t comfortable. And the appeal of Perennials? It’s a gamechanger. Not all performance fabrics are created equal, and Perennials is kind of fanatical with how its fabrics perform. Also, the rugs feel like the

finest wool or silk. The company’s beautiful, soft carpet is stain-proof, which is exactly what people want. Customers want beauty and practicality. What was the spark for your collection? I have offices in Paris and Los Angeles, so my aesthetic is very much European-inspired, but through a casual California filter. In this collection there’s a fabric that is almost like an Italian tapestry, which is called Go for Baroque. There are also chinoiserie options, one which is inspired by a Chinese wallpaper and another that is reminiscent of an 18th-century interpretation of a French chinoiserie. You skew traditional, while Perennials leans contemporary. This was a real leap for Perennials. Ann Sutherland, who started the company, isn’t naturally drawn to the warmer colors and classical styles that I use but she said, “That’s why we need you!” I told her, “This is not going to be in your comfort zone. Be ready for it.” What’s in the crystal ball for performance fabrics? It’s important to see these fabrics as

“Clients want beauty and practicality,” says designer Timothy Corrigan of his latest performance fabric and rug collection with Perennials.

something to be used indoors and figuring out how more products can be performance based. We’ll also see an expansion into materials like wood finishes with marine varnish so people don’t have to worry about putting down a glass. The future of design is influenced by consumers who are not willing to make the trade-off between performance and beauty.

THE LATEST TABLETOP FINDS ADD A TOUCH OF ARTFUL LIVING TO THE EVERYDAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

This season’s spirited tabletop selections are making it easy to transform everyday place settings into luxurious works of art. Each piece offers a creative expression while also evoking a bold sense of time and place. Consider Buccellati’s Doge collection, which inspirits its Italian craftmanship and pays homage to the splendors of Venetian art with hand-hammered and chiseled silver enhanced with malachite, lapis and red jasper. Closer to home, Michelle Blade looked to her Pacific Northwestern roots for her ceramic Garden Series. Molly Hatch’s Always Collection brings a modern and playful twist to a traditional 18th-century European surface pattern, and Luke Edward Hall’s collaboration with Richard Ginori is based on his love of Greco-Roman mythology. And finally, James Peter Henry morphed his public art installation at TableArt into a limited-edition collection that celebrates “the complexity of a human journey in a possible fourth-dimensional state.”

TWO DESIGN EMPORIUMS COMMEMORATE ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARIES IN LOS ANGELES. GRAYE: Last October, Graye founder Maria Cicione followed the likes of J.F. Chen and Blackman Cruz and moved her exclusive furnishings gallery from Robertson Boulevard to Hollywood. The neighborhood’s warehouses transition naturally to creative use, and the move gave Cicione the chance to reshape her business. Now open to the public, the gallery (above) is the exclusive distributor of MDF Italia, Porada and De Castelli, among others, and welcomes custom projects. “This location has been hugely successful for us,” she says. “It allows us to connect with our clients in a space that just feels good.” To fête the occasion, Cicione is presenting an exhibition of French photographer Dolorès Marat’s work, designed in collaboration with French gallery Louis’ Dimension and local architect Gulla Jónsdóttir. With new works coming this fall—limited-edition tabletop glassworks by Ivan Baj and new lighting from Catellani & Smith—there’s much to discover. graye-la.com

Design must-dos: Exploring Case Study houses in the hills is so uniquely L.A.—magical and accessible. Walt Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl are on the top of my list of performance venues that are so aligned with the architecture. On the weekends: Melrose and Fairfax Avenues are lined with great restaurants (think Gracias Madre, which offers plant-based Mexican food), and the Melrose Trading Post at Fairfax High School on Sundays is perfect for shopping and people watching. Neighborhood on the rise: We’re designing the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (below), which will be relocating to a renovated building near Washington Boulevard and Western Avenue—this is an area to watch! Up-and-coming: I’m intrigued by Michael Ford of BrandNu Design. He’s known for his Hip Hop Architecture research and is a designer pushing to increase the number of minorities in the architecture and urban planning fields. open house photos: graye, minh t; st. frank, courtesy st. frank. the insider photos: courtesy gensler.

Earlier this year, architect Barbara Bouza, co-managing director of Gensler’s L.A. office and leader of the firm’s global Health & Wellness and Sciences Practice Areas, became president of the AIA/LA, a role that has her looking at the region in a new way. “We have the ability to shape Los Angeles into a city that has yet to be envisioned,” she says, “and human well-being through design is at the epicenter.” Actively involved with myriad nonprofits (Imagine L.A. and Girls Inc. among them), Bouza is a force for good. She’s also a great source for what’s best in the city. Here, she shares some favorites with Luxe. gensler.com; aialosangeles.org

ST. FRANK: Also celebrating in a new locale is St. Frank, the ethically focused home shop. Founder Christina Bryant opened in Palisades Village last year, imbuing the store, aka “the Hacienda,” with Mexican-style textiles, gifts, tabletop and wallpaper. “It’s been great to be part of the neighbor network of largely women-led and emerging brands,” says Bryant of the venue. “The community is so special.” To mark the occasion, St. Frank is offering limitededition photographs of Mexico CIty by Robert Malmberg and launching its own home fragrance line. stfrank.com 106 / luxesource.com

AVENUE INTERIOR DESIGN FOR LOLOEY RUGS Designers Andrea DeRosa and Ashley Manhan, founders of hospitality firm Avenue Interior Design, have released a capsule collection with Italian rug manufacturer Loloey. “The inspiration was high-fashion design along with classic, rose- and peony-based floral patterns,” says DeRosa. And a nod to architecture yielded “four patterns with a geometric overlay on an abstracted floral background,” she explains. “We aimed to give them more depth with a painterly, ethereal quality—in a way that doesn’t feel overly feminine,” notes Manhan. But that’s not the only novel aspect. “We’re also the first females to collaborate with the brand, which is very exciting,” she says. avenueid.com

JOINT ADVENTURE MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS WRITTEN BY NINA KORMAN

How does 30 feel? MG: Weird and interesting and great. We just hired a CEO, Allison O’Connor, to spearhead things, nurture our team and position us for even bigger and better growth in the future. Greatest lesson learned while in business? BW: Follow your gut. If you don’t have that really deep feeling about something, it may not be quite perfect. So many people let others get in their minds or talk them out of stuff, then things go kind of haywire. Proudest accomplishment as a company? BW: Day care. We started it 22 years ago. Since then we’ve had about 70 kids there all the time. You get to see them grow up. What’s next? MG: A whole new take on leather club chairs in exciting colors, like leaf green, deep red and peacock blue (shown). Some of the silhouettes are classic modern while others have a very new traditional look. 108 / luxesource.com

GLORYA KAUFMAN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER This fall, the Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services campus in Cheviot Hills welcomes a building gifted by philanthropist/dance advocate Glorya Kaufman. By day, it will cater to students and Kaufman’s Therapeutic Dance Program; evenings and weekends will be devoted to public performances. Designed by Brian Wickersham of Aux Architecture, the project melds a 1960s synagogue with a spacious rehearsal studio and grounds by Sterling Landscaping. “We’ve preserved the congregation space, wrapping it with a new building,” says Wickersham. In addition to being tailored to the arts, the venue is the main campus gathering space, a teaching facility and a place to celebrate High Holidays. “Brian really listens and cares,” says Kaufman. “It’s going to be a fantastic addition to the area.” thegloryakaufmandancefoundation.org

Moving forward quickly is an apt metaphor for their business, which is now celebrating its 30 th anniversary. Gold and Williams initially founded a factory in Taylorsville to ensure superior, American-made products, then proceeded to take care of their now 900-plus employees by establishing on-site day care, a gym, a health center and a café. Los Angeles-based interior designer Stefani Stein has produced a collection of wallpapers through her lifestyle brand, August Abode. “It began with some sketching and custom designs for clients, then all of a sudden I found myself launching a wallpaper line,” she says. “Many of the patterns are inspired by details I’ve observed during my travels, set to a backdrop of hues influenced by the diverse California landscape.” The line, which is also available through Mimi London, Erik Waldorf and Fritz Porter showrooms, features a blend of geometrics, including bold stripes and a clever trompe l’oeil stone pattern, in addition to soft florals—from blousy peonies to whimsical anthuriums. augustabode.com

COLLABORATION BACCARAT LA MAISON WRITTEN BY NINA KORMAN

Founded in 1764 in France, during the reign of King Louis XV, the venerable company Baccarat long seemed content to be one of the world’s finest makers of crystal. Impeccable stemware, vases and chandeliers were initially among its sought-after creations. Fastforward to the 1990s and crystal-embellished jewelry as well as a signature fragrance —in a Baccarat bottle, of course—emerged. But that was just the beginning: Since 2012, Baccarat’s esteemed name and wares have adorned eponymous hotels, restaurants and bars around the world. Recently, the coveted crystal came back home in a big way via Baccarat La Maison, a line of furniture and decorative objects devised with Italy’s Luxury Living Group. The company is an industry pioneer known for creating and distributing lavish furniture collections for prestigious fashion and automotive brands like Fendi and Bentley. Unveiled this spring at Salone del Mobile in Milan and debuting in October at Luxury Living’s L.A. flagship, Baccarat La Maison was designed by top French talents, including Jacques Grange and Arik Levy. The 40-plus Art Deco-inspired furnishings complement nearly every room. Case goods of rich rosewood, ebony and red elm coexist with elegantly upholstered seating. All feature a tasteful touch of crystal. A few are more ornate, like Grange’s crystal-tiled Le Bar (right), which literally sparkles in an array of hues thanks to embedded LED technology. It all makes for a dazzling display that would please any discerning homeowner or the most meticulous of French monarchs. luxurylivinggroup.com 110 / LUXESOURCE.COM

BREAKING GROUND the art of design

H

artmanBaldwin approaches every project with a clear and guiding principle, “Knowing what moves our clients is where we begin”, says Bill Baldwin principal of the award-winning firm. “We pride ourselves on delivering an exceptional client experience and that’s because we know that success comes from bringing together the best skills and talent in the industry that understand how to be great collaborators when bringing a client’s vision to life.” As in the case of this luxurious custom home. Set atop a rolling hill with gorgeous panoramic views, this home is best characterized as Contemporary Ranch style and required extensive development of the 8.5-acre property which included access roads, a bridge over a winding creek that wraps around part of the property. “The floor plan and massing of the home were intended to be modern and dynamic in style. However, we wanted to juxtapose these modern design elements with a sense of traditional/historic weight that would transcend current architectural trends, as well as a floor plan that was fitting for a growing family.”

“With the Presrv™ Wine and Beverage Coolers, we integrated some of the most sought-after technological elements and combined them with eye-catching aesthetics.”

discoverzephyr

A seasoned entertainer’s kitchen is no longer complete without a Presrv™ Cooler. Created by wine preservation and ventilation pioneer Zephyr, the Presrv Wine and Beverage Coolers are posh and high-performance refrigeration units complete with Full-Extension Wood Racks, Active Cooling Technology, and two distinct temperature zones. Ideal for those who appreciate everything from red and white wines, craft beer and perfectly chilled sodas, the Beverage Cooler dips down to a frigid 34 °F—an ideal temperature for storing beer and other beverages that taste best at their frostiest. The Presrv Cooler works in nearly any space; its design is centered on providing solutions for the way people live and where they spend their time in the home. In an open kitchen, a Presrv Wine Cooler ensures that favorite bottles of wine are easily accessible when entertaining guests. And in game rooms, large walk-in closets or dens, a Beverage Cooler is an ideal option to store favorite drinks, so they are on hand and chilled to perfection.

Luke Siow, Zephyr President

THE RIGHT MIX Integrating mixed metallics throughout the home continues to dominate design trends. A sleek alternative to stainless steel, the titanium-coated black stainless steel Presrv Coolers give a sophisticated edge to wine storage. Zephyr’s signature black stainless steel finish is available on the Dual Zone Wine and the Single Zone Beverage Coolers.

Rather, it is quiet, serene, rewards sustained use and attention, and, as Ogosta puts it, “enables its inhabitants to enter into a discourse with themselves and the world.”

THE LOOK An insider’s guide to what’s new in the world of posh high-rise living, plus bold color ideas to enliven the home’s high-traffic zones.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

INTO the BLUE ONCE OVERLOOKED KITCHEN STORAGE SPACES ARE REINVENTED WITH RICH, JUICY COLOR. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.

“I love using bold color in a room that feels unexpected,” explains Houston-based designer Lauren Haskett of this sophisticated butler’s pantry scheme that packs a punch with its sensuous blue shade. Traditionally, the kitchen has been a neutral zone where clients steered clear of adventurous tones. Yet today designers are turning to bright and dramatic designs in the kitchen’s auxiliary spaces: Think glamorous and vivid gem tones in a prep kitchen, butler’s pantry or wet bar. These more modest areas are being transformed into rich jewel boxes—a surprising departure from what was once a purely functional room. As Haskett notes, “Color really sets the tone of the room.” So why not add some drama to peeling potatoes and storing spaghetti sauce?

186 / luxesource.com

Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball decorates the butler’s pantry in this Westlake, Texas, home, while Visual Comfort pendants hang from the barrel ceiling covered in a pale blue Elizabeth Dow wallpaper.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

PANTRY PERFECT LAUREN HASKETT

While using a strong color took some persuading (Black was the original pick!), designer Lauren Haskett always knew her client’s butler’s pantry needed something fresh. The trick was elevating the design of this space with polished surfaces and elegant details that were in keeping with the rest of this stately home near Fort Worth, Texas. houstoninteriordesign.co Tell us about the function of this space. I call this the butler’s pantry, but it really has a multitude of uses including acting as a connector between the main kitchen, media room and mudroom, so it gets used all the time. As the kitchen space only has one wall of cabinetry, this room doubles as a coffee bar, wet bar, charging station, storage area for china and catering kitchen. Several appliances, including a Perlick refrigerator, Scotsman ice machine and KitchenAid dishwasher, are also housed in the pantry.

A Native Trails sink and Kallista faucet sit in front of a large window that looks out onto the patio and pool. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls.

Is the same level of sophistication carried throughout the house? The overall aesthetic of the home is definitely on the formal side and even the spaces that are casual still have an elegance to them, so I wanted to make sure the butler’s pantry reflected how refined this residence is. I also wanted to inject a dose of glamour with this grand color.

photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.

The color is so striking. How did you select it? I’m so happy we went with Hague Blue because there is so much depth to it; it can go green, blue and gray all at the same time. However, what’s most important when working with a darker color in a space is to incorporate contrast, so it won’t ever feel like a cave. Here, we added lighter countertops, pale wallpaper, metallic hardware and glass-front cabinets that bounce light around.

Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl, the designers behind West Hollywood, California, firm Studio Life.Style, wanted to make sure the spaces they created for a clients’ home in Los Angeles had longevity and an enduring aesthetic for their growing family. In the boy’s bathroom they decided to focus on a scheme that was fun and playful yet sophisticated enough to stand the test of time. “Patterned tiles are a great way to bring in color,” the designers explain of a bath area lined with graphic greenand-white tiles, a combination that feels less expected than the traditional blue and brings in bit of whimsy. studio-lifestyle.com 194 / luxesource.com

ARCHITECTS

ERIK B. PETERSON PHX Architecture 310.626.4111 phxarch phxarch.com When Erik B. Peterson, AIA, sets out to begin a new project, three factors are top of mind: natural light, scale and something unanticipated. “I like to create awe and delight,” he says. “I enjoy an element of surprise in design; something the client doesn’t discover until they occupy the space.” The architect grew up in Chicago, a city inspired by its architectural design innovation. The president of award-winning PHX Architecture prides himself on being able to tailor the client’s specific needs into any project. The firm has produced stunning results for residential and hospitality projects alike. “Some of our standout projects include homes for sports stars, like Randy Johnson; celebrities, like Vince Vaughn; iconic resorts, including Miraval; and a record-breaking 100,000-square-foot home,” he says. “I love the look in a client’s eyes when we present the concept, and again when they see it in realized form.”

“As I study it, the land begins to guide me.”

How do you stay “in the know”? I keep updated through AIA, attending LCDQ’s Legends and reading internet news. One thing your clients would be shocked to know about you? I love opera, and it would be my dream to design theater sets for it. Job perks? Travel, dining in beautiful locations and seeing some of the world’s most incredible golf courses are extra elements I enjoy. What’s the key to work/life balance? I try to be present in whatever I do. Travel destination that has most influenced your work? I've always been inspired by Europe. Motto you live by? The golden rule has always guided me. What are your design pet peeves? I dislike sloppiness, a project without a well-thought-out plan, and cop-outs.

HAEFELE DESIGN From designing a kitchen in a Wallace Neff house to a RED award-winning kitchen, Laurie Haefele has exceeded her own expectations. Founding her Santa Monica-based firm, Haefele Design, in 2002, she’s taken a boutique approach … with global results. Having completed projects around the world for clients she describes as “very sophisticated, well-traveled, and who love to entertain,” she remains dedicated to the utmost quality, service and precision. Haefele attributes her ongoing success to these amazing clients, as well as the talented and dedicated employees on her team. “A successful project has a good team, starting with the contractor,” she says. A point made well in her RED award-winning kitchen, where she put collaboration and her love of contemporary design to work. “The kitchen palette was inspired by the sand, as the house juts 60 feet over the ocean with an adjacent glass floor window,” she says. “The goal was to design a highly functional cooking, gathering and entertaining space for a growing family. The clients requested a streamlined kitchen, which meant concealing certain elements, such as handles and appliances.” Haefele Design recently relocated to the corner of Montana Avenue and Euclid Street in Santa Monica, continuing to provide high-end luxury kitchens, baths and wardrobes in this upbeat, prestigious neighborhood.

OUR ANNUAL DEEP DIVE INTO REAL ESTATE AND THE SHEER LUXURY OF HIGH-RISE LIVING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

MOVING ON UP Over the last few years, more and more people have been gravitating toward cities and the vibrant lifestyle that high-rise living delivers. Young executives, international professionals, families and retired couples are looking for ease, convenience and walkability—museums, restaurants and schools at their doorstep—but all within the frame of luxury living. To meet the demand, developers are turning to the world’s most respected architects and designers to create residential buildings that meet every need, and quite a few whims. A latenight cognac and a game of billiards? A sunrise swim in the infinity pool overlooking the city? It’s all possible. And while the amenities are designed to feel resort-like, they are also intended to feel like home.

RISE

The Harrison, on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, was ahead of the curve when it devoted its penthouse floor not to the preeminent condo but to its residents’ pleasure—a democratizing move that new developments are following. There, designer Ken Fulk, who designed all of the property’s public spaces, created Uncle Harry’s, a green-lacquered lounge that lets everyone take in the 49th floor’s spectacular vistas. “With 180-degree views spanning from the ocean to the bay, we imagined this as the sky-high aerie of a bon vivant explorer that just happens to be your favorite uncle,” says Fulk. Accessed by a grand entry salon, the floor includes a dining room, pantry, fitness center and spa. It’s an homage to the city’s elegant and continental spirit, just with Fulk’s signature pizazz. theharrisonsf.com

TABLE TALK For its latest collection, Armani/Casa has re-released its clever Link coffee tables with a colorful new look. Originally created in walnut and brass, the new edition, which debuted at Salone del Mobile in Milan this spring, is designed with shagreen-effect leather tops in red, blue and green—colors that appear throughout the collection. The tabletops are banded with satin-brass trim and set on walnut bases. Lobby library at 277 Fifth Avenue “Our design reflects the energy and sensibility of NoMad,” says Jeffrey Beers of his vision for 277 Fifth Avenue. “It’s my favorite neighborhood in New York, so it was easy to be inspired by the area’s historical buildings and creative vibe.” Making a traditional statement in thoroughly modern style is the lobby library, one of the building’s most sophisticated amenities. 277fifth.com Why a library? In the building’s lobby entrance, we really wanted to make an instant “welcome home” statement. Describe the look. Handsome, sensible, tailored and timeless. Tell us about the features. If you look closely, you’ll see the library mimics the building’s exterior. It’s beautifully made with dramatic, double-height cases and incredible wood detailing. While we have an affection for designing bookcases (I’m an avid book collector), we prefer to collaborate with renowned publishers like Assouline to curate what goes onto the shelves.

HIGH SOCIETY

FOUR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS CHAT ABOUT LUXURY AMENITIES AND THE FUTURE OF HIGH-RISE LIVING.

CURT R. BAILEY

LEONARD STEINBERG

KEVIN BATCHELOR

BRIAN LEVITT

What trends are you seeing in the high-rise sector? Developers will increasingly cater to families who appreciate the benefits of urban living—a graciously designed residence that extends to worldclass amenities for all generations. Must-have amenity: Fitness centers. I want state-of-the-art equipment, first-class service, innovative programming, and well-designed spaces that offer communal cardio workouts to private Pilates sessions. relatedmidwest.com

Why is the high-rise market so hot? Time is the last luxury, and high-rise living delivers convenience. Elevating yourself above the city allows you to enjoy all its joys while separating yourself when it’s time to relax and unwind. Amenities on the horizon: Wind turbines on top, generating energy for the entire building and a landing pad for drone deliveries. Security will become much greater, too. compass.com

Who’s moving in? In the past decade, we have seen a downsizing trend amongst empty nesters, gypsy nesters and older millennials. What’s luring them? This demographic wants walkability and a 24-hour, lock-and-leave lifestyle. Everyone wants their own personal concierge to handle everything from dry cleaning and food deliveries to tickets to the opera. They’re looking for higher-quality, personalized butler-style services. You can’t beat the hyper-convenience. hines.com

What amenity is most important to you? Where we live has a profound effect on our well-being and I’m all for beautifully designed common spaces that encourage gathering. How do you see the high-rise lifestyle advancing? People choose condo living because they want to know their neighbors. There needs to be a renewed focus on creating memorable experiences that build a stronger connection between people, place and community. navareal.com

15 Hudson Yards, a collaboration between architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, who oversaw the interiors, has devoted its 51st floor to entertaining amenities that will thrill epicureans and oenophiles alike. Not only are there private dining suites and a speakeasylike wine storage facility, but also a chef’s kitchen and wine tasting room. Rockwell defined the kitchen with a monolithic stone island and opted for leather counter stools in shades of gray and green—all in keeping with the project’s focus on natural materials and interiors that are, “simultaneously calm and strong,” he says. Adding to the gastronomic delights are the property’s restaurants by such luminaries as Thomas Keller and José Andrés. hudsonyardsnewyork.com

When speaking of Bauformat’s innovative cabinetry line, its fans consistently point to three main qualities they love: its high-gloss lacquered cabinet fronts that are resistant to discoloration from intense sun exposure; Bauformat’s drawer solution that is carefully considered with pullouts that provide a home for cookware behind elegant fronts; and its integrated lighting system that highlights the perfection of its product. “Our products are founded on precision German craftsmanship and outstanding functionality,” says Natasha Shtapauk, Bauformat’s brand ambassador. “Only the highest-quality materials and finishes are used to create our designs.” Made in Germany, but available in the Los Angeles area through Design Hardware, Bauformat kitchens capture the style and restraint of European design with functional solutions for the everyday. 4

THE FINE ART OF TECHNOLOGY Our cabinetry offers the latest technology in the industry. Laser edgebanding creates a seamless edge with excellent durability that matches any color options. Touch-sensing technology perfectly complements our exciting design language that features a contemporary look. Briefly nudging the handle-less front or gently pulling the handle is enough for drawers and pullouts to open and close automatically. “Don’t be afraid to use marble. Natural stone is a classic material that’s been used wonderfully for generations.”

DESIGN DIRECTIVES There are two rules by which Cooper Pacific Kitchens ardently abides: listen and lead. “You must balance the needs and desires of each client with the physical parameters of the given architectural space while taking care to answer function and beauty,” Cooper shares. The relationship between function and finesse is considered at every step of the design journey. “We create kitchens that combine a high degree of functionality with an artistic balance of material, texture, color and space,” he says.

Distinguished by deep texture and complementary contrasts, the richly visual work of Cooper Pacific Kitchens yields inspiration for new cooking, living and entertaining spaces. “Don’t be reluctant to be adventurous in the use of materials—from standard woods and paints to leather, mixed metals and natural stone surfaces,” advises principal designer Steven Cooper. “The materials support the function of the various zones in the kitchen.” With a predilection for vivid spaces, Cooper cites bold tones like deep greens and deep blues as popular palettes, along with mixed woods and metals. Passionate cooks and flawless hosts alike benefit from a myriad of appliance options in the kitchen. “Combine different types of technologies and products to best suit a recipe or the desired result,” Cooper says. “Convection, steam, gas, electric and induction all have very important places in a single kitchen.”

As a premier showroom specializing in the kitchen and bath, Pirch is home to new trends and time-tested products alike. Naturally, the staff has gathered much about the way these spaces are being designed and used today, both from the makers of the products they purvey, and from the design pros and homeowners they welcome through Pirch’s doors on the daily. The takeaways? Open floor plans are here to stay, technology’s role only grows and appliances are no longer being cleverly hidden. “We see more appliances placed front and center,” CEO Steve Smith says. “They continue to evolve as perfect examples of function meets beauty.” Will Dillard, Pirch’s COO, points to decorative plumbing as achieving the same change of status, adding, “Faucets are the jewels of your kitchen and bath, and they offer a great way to quickly refresh a design.”

1. Unparalleled performance, classic design and international acclaim—it’s the kind of trifecta rarely achieved by any one brand, much less two. But such is the case with Sub-Zero and Wolf. 2. ristine artists’ communities line the California coast but Venice is something of an anomaly, and residents old and new wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s the freethinking, bohemian energy preserved by longtime locals that has lured the tech companies that trade on pioneering spirit. It’s a mix of grit and sophistication; an edgy, urban destination that’s second only to Disneyland in attracting tourists to Southern California. People, as interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard will tell you, will always want “a fun play spot.” And that’s precisely what he crafted for a client’s bachelor pad right in the heart of town. “This is his pied-à-terre,” says Bullard, who also designed the owner’s main home in Malibu and vacation home in Hawaii. “He’s here for work and likes to spend a couple nights a week, so he wanted it to be a place that was hip and relaxed.” It also needed to show off a growing art collection that includes works by Richard Prince, Nate Lowman and Wolfgang Tillmans, assembled with the guidance of contemporary art specialist Andrea Guttag of Nine Acres Art Services. But even more essential was the ability to easily host friends. “He loves to entertain,” says Bullard, “so we created a couple of different places for him to do so.” The loft-like space is arranged around an inner courtyard that provided the perfect spot for a casual dining area “with a Zen garden feel,” shares Bullard. Open to the sky, it floods the interior spaces with fresh air and sunshine—important elements to the owner, an avid surfer. To imbue the home with a coastal vibe, the designer chose a traditional blue and white palette but weighted it with shades of black and gray. “It’s the flavor of the beach but more sophisticated,” he says, pointing to the layering of neutral tones like the Hèrmes saddle-colored leather and the bleached-out

woods in the living room. Wrapping the space’s fireplace wall with steel upped the industrial feel, which the designer balanced on the facing dining room wall with a moody, textured wallpaper, the perfect backdrop to works by Leroy Grannis. “Touches of brass add a masculine edge,” notes the designer, as do the antique African shields adorning the upper wall. “I loved the idea of grouping them like an installation. It makes the art in the home more eclectic.” Just off the living area is another outdoor entertaining spot (and a first for the designer): an alfresco home theater nestled within the balcony. “It’s all very Venice Beach-hip but it had to really work! You had to be able to push a button and make it all go,” says Bullard, paying homage to the AV know-how of Zuma Entertainment. “Everything had to be weatherproof, of course, and able to combat the sun,” says Bullard of the furnishings, “but it also needed to be inviting. The client likes loungy pieces.” The “loungy” feel continues in the master bedroom, where Bullard appointed a cozy sitting area with vintage armchairs by Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues. “We made it feel more ethnic with Balinese fabrics and the grass-cloth wallcovering.” To counter the sunlight, the designer took the wallcovering to the upper reaches of the ceiling. “When my client closes off the room, it’s a dark cocoon. It’s his sanctuary.” Reflecting on the project, the designer describes the abode’s style as a “crisp, masculine experience but with some yin-yang, too.” Working with landscape designer Stephen Block, Bullard brought greenery to the rooms. “They’re a real moment,” Bullard says of the plants, explaining that he likes how their sculptural shapes juxtapose the artworks. “We were going for clean, modern planters with unique, architectural plantings,” adds Block, who filled Willy Guhl-designed vessels with Beaucarnea recurvata, Dracaena draco, gnarly aloes and agaves. “Leafy and shrubby wasn’t the goal. We wanted it all to have an edge!” For Bullard, conceiving a hidden world in the midst of a city was tremendously appealing. “To find this really cool, residential vibe here is so surprising. It’s a very urban situation, yet we’ve carved out a little piece of paradise right in the middle of a bustling hang out,” he explains. “It’s got a very special essence that captures you with a feeling of surprise. You don’t expect to find this amid an office complex!” The proof, of course, is in the using. And while the owner has several homes from which to choose, “He really loves this one,” says Bullard. “It does the trick. The whole thing feels like a giant hotel suite. A very cool hotel suite.”

“We captured his personality,” says interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard of his client’s Venice home. The outdoor screening room features custom teak furnishings upholstered in Perennials fabrics from David Sutherland. Situated in the seating area are a table from Primary Source and a fire pit by Zeolla. The pillow print is from the designer’s own outdoor collection; the solid navy pillow fabric is from Holly Hunt. Interior Specialties fabricated the awning.

Bullard customized his Malibu sofa for the living room, covering it in a fabric from his own line. The coffee table is a vintage gym bench from Lucca Antiques, reupholstered in Edelman leather. The designer discovered the French iron and oak fireside shelving at Orange Furniture. Resting against it is a Tim Bessell x Andy Warhol surfboard from Guy Hepner. The custom rug is from Woven.

The dining table is from Martyn Lawrence Bullard Atelier while the vintage Italian chairs from Wyeth are in Ashbury Hides leather. Against the Holland & Sherry wallcovering are shelving from Blend Interiors and a Serge Mouille sconce. The rug is from Woven. On the upper wall, African shields from Primary Source overlook the space. The pair of Leroy Grannis photographs hints at the abode’s beachy locale.

Bullard kept the adjacent kitchen’s palette light and bright with statuary marble from TriStone & Tile. He spotted the four blackened-steel barstools at Lawson-Fenning and upholstered them in a cognaccolored leather from Ashbury Hides. At rear is a Wolfgang Tillmans work from David Zwirner in New York.

The master bedroom is a cozy retreat with a woven Omexco wallcovering and drapery fabric from the designer’s collection. The Sergio Rodrigues chairs from Orange are paired with an African table from J.F. Chen. Joining the grouping is a Richard Prince work from Almine Rech in Brussels. Flanking the custom bed, upholstered in fabric from Nicky Rising and laid with Frette linens, are nightstands from Hollywood at Home topped with Ryan Mennealy lamps from Harbinger. “I always like to make guest rooms exciting, so we went wild with a big pop of red,” says Bullard. The custom bed is upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon linen and is dressed with Scandia Home linens. The vintage Moroccan pillows are from Pat McGann. Against a wallcovering from Kneedler-Fauchère are a work by Louise Nevelson, a piece by Secundino Hernández from Victoria Miro in London and a work on paper by Gonçalo Sena from Heinrich Ehrhardt.

SYSTEM of Subtlety IN LOS ANGELES, A WEAVER HONORS IMPERFECTION ONE THREAD AT A TIME. WRITTEN BY TANYA WARD GOODMAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ORIANA KOREN

L

os Angeles artist Rachel DuVall has found freedom in self-imposed limitation. “I only do plain weave,” she says. “Just over and under in the simplest grid.” Working out of a spare studio in a 19th-century warehouse on the edge of Chinatown, DuVall has created a meditative practice where the width of her floor loom determines her pieces’ size and her choice of material—linen, with a texture stiffer than other natural fibers—“gives the weaving shape,” she says. Inspired by Abstract Expressionism and minimalist art by the likes of Mark Rothko, Donald Judd, and Josef and Anni Albers (she’ll be an artist in residence at The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in 2020), DuVall’s oeuvre employs a vocabulary of geometric shapes to begin a conversation around reflection, repetition, contrast and control. In an approach first driven by a desire to make a piece larger than the width of the loom, she stitches her woven panels together—often rotating or multiplying versions of the same pattern. “Now,” she says, “this stitching has been incorporated in my work because I like the tension where the panels are combined.” Although each section is identical, the act of sewing the panels together creates misalignments and variations, inviting contemplation of watery swaths of blue or a slim line of white that don’t quite correspond with their counterparts. DuVall begins each weaving with a painstakingly measured drawing on graph paper—a necessity in order to accurately calculate how much linen she must dye by hand in her El Sereno backyard to realize a specific piece. The preliminary sketches are colored with pastels, but the ultimate hues of the final product are subject to the whims of nature. They might be variations of indigo and gray or the brighter colors she is now pursuing. “I’ve gone so far in my practice,” the artist explains, “but I haven’t even touched on all the colors I can get from natural dye.” Besides an expanded color palette, DuVall has been exploring another medium: printing. “I started making woodcut prints as a way to take my preparatory drawings further,” she reports, “away from the purely technical sketch, to a work on paper that relates to the variation and shifts of the weavings.” To document the evolution from drawing to textile, she cuts wood blocks and mixes ink. These hand-rubbed prints emphasize the ripple of the wood grain and translate the imperfections and movement of fabric. The prints also provide short-term gratification for the artist. “Weaving takes so long,” she laughs. Even time, it seems, can place few restrictions on a woman whose expanded vision is based in restraint.

Artist Rachel DuVall’s studio is in a former train depot on the edge of L.A.’s Chinatown. A loom holds a weaving in progress (below). DuVall also translates her compositions into woodblock prints (opposite).

New Rhythms A SPIRITED YET GLAMOROUS VIBE PREVAILS IN A GERMAN FAMILY’S FASHION-FORWARD MALIBU ABODE. WRITTEN BY MARY ORE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRITTANY AMBRIDGE

INTERIOR DESIGN / VANESSA ALEXANDER, ALEXANDER DESIGN BUILD LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE / JOSH REZAC, DESIGN STUDIO MA

F

or Vanessa Alexander, design is less about creating a story and more about following logic. “It’s finding a rhythm,” she says. “The transition of materials from room to room is what gives the house a successful flow.” With that in mind, the designer took on the transformation of a dwelling for a German family eager to put down roots in Malibu and embrace the California lifestyle. The wife, who runs a high-end clothing boutique back in Hamburg, “has a super strong fashion sense and definitely had a point of view,” says Alexander. “She wanted it to be playful and luxurious at the same time—the American aesthetic fused with a fun pop factor.” Although the couple and their two teenage daughters had spent time in Los Angeles previously, this was their first permanent home there. A site on the Malibu Lagoon with views of the Santa Monica Mountains was the perfect spot for the indoor/outdoor way of life they envisioned. “But the house hadn’t been updated since the 1970s when it was built,” says Alexander. It was plagued by a dated floor plan and a rough stucco façade with diagonally set wood details, so what began as an aggressive remodel soon became a “down-to-the-studs renovation.” Working with general contractor Scott Halley, of Scott Halley and Associates, the designer preserved the original footprint while reimagining the way the interior spaces related.

For a German fashion entrepreneur and her family, designer Vanessa Alexander transformed a 1970s house in Malibu into a stylish dwelling “with a little vintage and a little contemporary in every room, she says. The living area includes a pair of Luteca chairs, a vintage de Sede sofa and a side table from The Line. The Chanel surfboard adds a note of playful chic.

luxesource.com / 257

Alexander’s quest for continuity began with the façade, where she swapped some of the stucco cladding with contemporary looking board-formed concrete and then carried it inside to the massive living area fireplace. “We wanted to bring in another texture,” she notes. The revamped double-height room, which looks both inward (to stairways and a first-floor walkway) and outward (to the garden and views beyond), is light-filled and open, a superb hub for the frequent entertaining the family enjoys. “When we nailed the stairs and the two-story living room and how the cantilevered loft would work, that was the first ‘aha’ moment of the house,” she reports. The mood shifts in the kitchen, where the wife’s request for industrial and rustic elements prompted Alexander to use steel windows and wood with a weathered feel.

In a house this contemporary, however, she didn’t want shabby chic. “The question was how to weave it in without it feeling out of place,” she says. Staining the wood a warm gray yielded the sophisticated look the clients were after, as did contrasting the dark palette with brass details in the stove hood, countertops and custom lighting. “Since the kitchen ceiling is not very high, we couldn’t use a pendant, and we needed something with a lot of impact,” adds the designer, who collaborated with Neptune Glassworks on a light fixture that snakes across the ceiling and “almost looks like circuitry.” Even though the couple “let us do our thing,” says Alexander (her own contemporary barn-style residence in Malibu initially drew them), the wife’s stamp is evident throughout the home. “She loves to collect things when

Opposite: “Although not every space has to make a statement if it’s part of the overall flow, I like a little wow moment in every room,” the designer says. In the kitchen, she boldly deployed brass—on the countertops, espresso bar and customized lighting system from Neptune Glassworks. The vintage stools are by Milo Baughman. Below: The Euroline steel windows and wood cabinetry fulfilled the wife’s request for rustic and industrial elements though Alexander tempered the rusticity of the wood with a dark gray stain. “It’s very elegant,” she says.

Paired with a rose gold faucet by Dornbracht, an Agape tub is a focal point in the dualtoned master bath, which has a vintage Moroccan rug from Mehraban. Here, as throughout, Alexander showcased art from the clients’ collection.

A central staircase connects to an open hallway above the new double-height living room, all part of the updated floor plan that Alexander conceived with general contractor Scott Halley to improve flow and transparency. The hallway, which joins the master suite and children’s bedrooms, serves as a gallery for the family’s collections of art, photographs and memorabilia.

Set on the Malibu Lagoon, “the site is unique, Alexander says. For the hardscape, she and landscape architect Josh Rezac went with teak decking, rock beds and concrete walls to showcase the low-wateruse plantings, including olive trees and several varieties of cactus.

she travels, and all of the vignettes are composed of very personal items.” In the living area, not far from the enormous Swiss midcentury leather sofa, “the Chanel surfboard is very her,” Alexander notes, as is a Prada sign in a daughter’s room. As befits a woman in the fashion business, the closet was a priority. The wife’s is lined with black shelves to set off the candy-colored shoes and clothing that define her personal style. Black gives way to gray in the adjacent master bedroom, where tones range from gunmetal on the nightstands to graphite on the custom upholstered platform bed. The space opens via French doors onto a cantilevered deck—an inviting spot for coffee or cocktails. Outdoors, the total makeover of the property devised by landscape architect Josh Rezac “is minimal but purposeful,”

he says. Low-water-use plants, including barrel and prickly pear cactus, surround the house like sculptures and cast shadows against the walls that enclose the garden. Given that Malibu can get windy and chilly, there are intimate protected zones, such as the fire pit sitting area, in addition to exposed spots for sunning. “It’s not a beachfront house, but we wanted to make sure you’re connected to the outside,” Alexander says. While the project turned out to be more extensive than planned, the house is now a splendid reflection of the owners’ new life. “It took a while to create a blend that doesn’t feel forced,” says the designer. “And we hit all the marks the client was hoping to hit.” What’s more, she says, “It’s the perfect place to entertain friends and family from many different lands.”

“We tried to activate a couple different areas outside,” the designer notes. Arranged next to a custom blackened-steel outdoor fireplace, two Gloster sofas are part of a seating area protected from the wind.

T

here is nothing like moving across the country to inspire a stylistic sea change, something a couple, newly transplanted from landlocked Atlanta to Southern California and its pristine Pacific blues, knows well. Wanting to create a home that was a departure from the Mediterranean-style structure they left behind, they discovered a bluff-top spot high above the ocean. “They were looking to go in a completely opposite direction,” says their interior designer Sandra Vila, “with something much more modern that embraced their beautiful new surroundings.” Despite the stunning locale, the property’s rambling Spanish-style abode, with its varying ceiling heights and floor levels, proved less than ideal for the couple’s new vision. Also of no help: a few problematic architectural elements that impeded easy access to the outdoors. So they recruited residential designer Claude-Anthony Marengo to transform the abode into a contemporary escape by the sea. “They wanted to experience the beach throughout the home,” says Marengo. “We tried to lose the lines and limitations of the previous structure to create open-style, great-room living, so they weren’t compartmentalized into one place.” This great room formed the core of the open-layout design, with sliding door systems that expanded the living area onto a terrace. He also notes that positioning all the bedrooms to face the ocean meant “nothing was hidden in the background.” Marengo’s plan incorporates elegant moments of surprise as well, such as a dramatic exterior wall banded in woodgrain porcelain and limestone that flows seamlessly inside

the home. The feature “blurs the lines between inside and outside,” he says. It also sets the tone for the statementmaking front entrance, complete with a reflecting pool and a two-story, jewel-box tower that contains a floating staircase and a vivid painting by artist Joëlle Blouin. “The idea was that when you left the great room, which is all ocean view, and you move to the staircase, your view transitions to another body of water,” says the residential designer. Inside, Vila continued the homeowners’ wish for a modern approach to beach living. “We wanted to bring in the outdoors, not just the soft tones of the coast, but the neutral hues of the rocks,” says the interior designer. “And we used a lot of raw materials and metals to create a very understated feel.” These subtle tones play throughout the main floor, with mocha creme limestone flooring, marble and weathered oak in the kitchen and slabs of soft gray stone for the minimalist, floor-to-ceiling fireplace. While the fire feature seems deceptively simple now, general contractor Ryan Jantz notes that creating it was a challenge. “It required a lot of care because the material is fragile,” he says, adding that the floating hearth required welded steel behind it to give it structure. When selecting the furnishings, Vila again welcomed the beach inside, incorporating warm wood accents inspired by natural driftwood—from the live-edge monkey pod table in the dining area to the one-of-a-kind chamcha wood coffee table in the living room. “We brought in textures that felt like things had rolled in from the ocean or fell off of the cliff,” says Vila of her concept. These standout pieces were contrasted “with clean-lined, functional items, subtle enough to not overshadow what was going on with the view.” For private areas, however, the scheme became bolder “to give each room its own personality, one you can feel the minute you walked through the door,” she explains. “In these spaces, my clients wanted to take materials they liked to the next level. Why stop when you could do the whole thing?” Striking wallcoverings help define the bedrooms, from leather tiles in the master to circular wood veneers in a guest room. The bathrooms are a study in contrast, beginning with the heavenly master bath where the floor, walls and integrated sinks are completely covered in Calacatta marble. Meanwhile, a guest bathroom embraces the dark side with limestone, portico slate and teak flooring, the latter inspired by the deck of a ship. All of those carefully considered elements add up to a compelling whole, the ideal backdrop for the couple to enjoy their change of scenery. “Every little detail counted. There was no stone left unturned,” says Vila. “And it’s just a pure joy working with people willing to take a chance.”

For a new home with sweeping views of the Southern California coastline, interior designer Sandra Vila encouraged “a very outdoors-in approach to living by incorporating natural materials and earthy neutrals. This palette defines the living room and key pieces, including a Phillips Collection coffee table and A. Rudin chairs, which swivel to face the sunset.

“Kitchens can sometimes feel devoured,” notes residential designer Claude-Anthony Marengo. “So we enlarged the island to delineate the area and create more entertaining space.” A. Rudin counter chairs face the island topped with polished Calacatta Lincoln marble from Unique Stone Imports. The Sub-Zero refrigerator and Wolf range are from Renwes Sales; the Waterstone faucet is from Laguna’s Fancy Faucets; the cabinetry is by SieMatic.

Above: “We wanted to let the marble speak for itself, tell its own story, Vila says of the stone chosen for the master bath. She incorporated sleek fixtures and streamlined silhouettes like the Porcelanosa freestanding tub, with Graff fittings, allowing the stonework to take center stage. Left: In the master bedroom, Vila opted for soft hues and created depth and complexity through texture. This includes a statement wall of Garrett Leather tiles, an upholstered Poliform bed, lush Signoria linens and a Bernhardt bench.

Vila took a modern, minimalist yet comfortable approach to the outdoor furnishings. She appointed a spot overlooking the water with a pair of Home Infatuation chaises. On the terrace she placed a Phillips Collection cocktail table between chairs by Slide.

“IT’S JUST A PURE JOY WORKING WITH PEOPLE WILLING TO TAKE A CHANCE.” –SANDRA VILA
