With its headquarters and 125,000-square-foot distribution center in New Jersey, an extensive slab gallery and stone shop, eight showrooms and over 200 dealers nationwide, Artistic Tile is living the American design dream. Answering the American call for top quality, customization and the ability to choose materials firsthand, Artistic Tile delivers on these and more with a full-service, one-stopshop experience. “Our production capabilities allow customers complete freedom to design their dream space in a myriad of colors, shapes and patterns,” CEO and founder Nancy Epstein says. “And they will have the highest-quality materials that will fit perfectly in their homes. Clients can select materials in person or watch them being made at our Secaucus facility.”
“Stone is a product of permanence; something that is natural, elegant, lasts forever and cannot be imitated.”
SETTING THE BAR Since 1987, Artistic Tile has served the most discerning consumers of luxury tile and stone products under the guidance of Epstein, who continues to lead the company into the future, along with her sons Michael and Zachary Epstein, and cousins Lauren Cherkas and Joshua Levinson. Today, through its headquarters and its showrooms in New York, New Jersey, San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas, Artistic Tile leads the market, producing designs that define the direction of the tile industry. Exquisite attention to detail ensures a final product that sets the bar for the luxury tile segment. “We are known for our innovative, award-winning designs in stone, glass and other mixed materials,” Epstein says. “We also source the highest-quality materials from all over the world and stock many beautiful natural products.” 1
THE LOCAL DIFFERENCE Artistic Tile uses its New Jersey manufacturing facilities to prototype and test out new ideas, patterns and colors. “We can walk into the production area and use what they are currently making to inform our latest ideas,” Epstein says. “It is a great symbiotic relationship having a variety of machines right next to our design department.”

I
t was the end of New York Fashion Week and the kick-off to the design season when I found myself in the spirited world of designer Johnson Hartig of fashion brand Libertine. We were jammed into BGs, celebrating the launch of his new textile collection for Schumacher, and I got to chatting with Johnson about our shared belief in the importance of beauty; how deeply it can move you and its power as a means of emotional connection. Walking back to my hotel later, I thought about what had first sparked my own appreciation for beauty. Coincidentally, it involved Schumacher and a room in my grandmother’s home. She referred to it as the “black-and-white room,” her guest room where I stayed on my many visits. The ceiling and walls were covered in Shengyou Toile and all of the bed linens were made from the same fabric. A large white basin set upon a chic French antique table held her artistic interior garden, overflowing with lush green plantings. The table was nested into a large bay window that overlooked one of her several outdoor gardens, dotted with color in the spring and summer. That room was magical to me; it was beauty and warmth and love. This season, I encourage you to seek out beauty and hold a memory of it close to you. As Johnson reminded me...it soothes the soul.

rivolity, joie de vivre and kaleidoscopic colors are synonymous with the Christian Lacroix aesthetic. The same could be said of the brand’s creative director, Sacha Walckhoff, who stepped into the role in 2010 after Lacroix left the House. Over the last decade, Walckhoff has transformed the company from a fashion powerhouse to a leader in the lifestyle and home decor space. “We are one of the only fashion brands who truly succeeded in going into home decor since Versace and Ralph Lauren,” says the creative director. In his latest furnishings collection with Roche Bobois, Walckhoff has stayed true to the brand’s
theatrical roots, dreaming up a fantastical fairy tale world featuring prints of enchanted forests and exotic creatures living in harmony. “The House of Christian Lacroix is as much about contrast as it is about adding surprise and wonder to the narration in any collection,” says Walckhoff. Each piece in the Bois Paradis collection delights with contrasting textures, evocative shapes and geometric patterns, while paying homage to Christian Lacroix’s beginnings. “This collection is a return to the origins of the House and its founding principle: combining the raw with the sophisticated to create an unrivaled aesthetic style,” says Walckhoff. This is exemplified in furnishings like the sumptuous sofa, which features the botanical Cueillette print in a rich velvet. Other items, like the large sixpaneled screen in natural oak with glossy lacquer, serve as an ideal backdrop for the Bois Paradis motif: a silhouetted storybook scene of soaring birds, swinging apes, and lush flora and fauna. Similar dreamscapes appear in Christian Lacroix’s other home collaborations too, all helmed by Walckhoff, such as a fabric and wallpaper line with Designers Guild and, recently, a porcelain tableware
Sacha Walckhoff’s latest designs for Christian Lacroix Maison include the Bois Paradis Bleu Nigelle wallcovering for Designers Guild (shown on previous page), a porcelain tableware collection with Vista Alegre (top, right), and a furnishings line with Roche Bobois (left).
collection with Vista Alegre. Herbariae, inspired by five flowers—the poppy, narcissus, lotus, dahlia and thistle—and designed around two color themes—a graphic black-and-white palette, and a watercolor style that combines soft pinks and yellows with celadon green and peacock blue—brings a neoclassical freshness to the table. “Mixing geometric patterns and floral ones makes each of them much more interesting,” says Walckhoff. “It allows the eye to go from one point to the other when looking at the decor of the room. As Diana Vreeland said, ‘The eye has to travel.’ ” Enhancing the natural environment has been a trademark of the Christian Lacroix brand, and one that Walckhoff embraces. Iconic moments include the Butterfly Parade design created in 2012 that so embodied the frivolities and joie de vivre of Christian Lacroix that it was mistaken for an archival print. “The lesson was that if a design is close enough to the idea people have about the brand, then the design is Lacroix!” remarks Walckhoff. As a multifaceted company, Walckhoff welcomes, and uses to his advantage, a broader vision. “We are not stopped by ideas that an interior brand would not do or have. To be un-experimented, unexpected sometimes helps,” he says. Aspirations include designing a hotel or a restaurant, and with Walckhoff ’s provocative spirit, one can only imagine the mythical fairy-tale world he might dream up. “When your imagination is always on fire, you just have to move forward,” he says. “It is exciting but exhausting sometimes! It keeps me alive.”

TRAITS SCHUMACHER TAKES A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WITH JOHNSON HARTIG’S FASHION HOUSE, LIBERTINE. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL COSTELLO
Johnson Hartig, founder of the fashion label Libertine, believes clothing should showcase one’s personality and that the same goes for interior design. “The psychology of interiors fascinates me,” he observes. Hartig brings that passion to his new line with Schumacher—a 40-piece collection of wallpaper, fabric and trim showcasing a mix of bold colors and patterns, but with classical influences. “The collection encapsulates him perfectly,” remarks Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “If you were to use it all together, it makes quite the statement. But if you were to pick out separate pieces, they still translate individually.” Caponigro is a longtime fan of Hartig and she saw him as the perfect collaborator with Schumacher. The brand has a history of working with fashion designers, beginning with Paul Poiret in 1930 and later Elsa Schiaparelli and Karl Lagerfeld under the Waverly brand. The Libertine collection is an example of what Caponigro calls the “yin and yang” of the company. “We have beautiful classics,” she says. “But we’re always pushing forward in terms of fashion and fun.” Bringing his own personality to every detail, many of the pieces, like the Punk Rock Mix Tape trim, were inspired by Hartig’s childhood or his everyday life. “Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, I’ve always been inspired by punk culture,” he says. And the hand-drawn artwork of the Magical Ming Dragon fabric and wallcovering was influenced by Hartig’s own prized Tibetan rug. While his newest designs embody a sharp boldness, they maintain an underlying classic style. For example, the Modern Toile fabric and wallcovering features a contemporary twist on the traditional design using large-scale patterns, and the Java Seas fabric finds its inspiration in Indian batiks from the 16th and 17th centuries. “I can’t wait to see how people use them—even if they use a couple pillows or pieces throughout a room,” Hartig says. “It will be reflective of their personalities, as they are of mine.”
Johnson Hartig photographed in his Los Angeles home with his dog, Terrance. “The way Johnson understands home is the way he understands fashion,” says Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “He has an innate style, innate creativity.”

Italian JOB
DESIGNER CRISTINA CELESTINO EMBRACES AN ICONIC FENDI PATTERN IN HER LATEST LAUNCH WITH THE ESTEEMED FASHION HOUSE. WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY OMAR SARTOR
Formally trained as an architect, Cristina Celestino’s design direction combines traditional elements connoting heritage with a contemporary aesthetic. As a fellow Italian interior and product designer with a passion for legacy, it was quite fitting that Fendi Casa tapped Celestino for its latest groundbreaking collection, Back Home. Here, Luxe gets the scoop on the inspiration behind the collaboration with the renowned fashion label. You first worked with Fendi designing one-ofa-kind furniture for the Design Miami booth in 2016. What came next? I worked with Fendi on the Omotesando store in Tokyo, where the Design Miami concept was adapted to a pop-up using everything from the furniture to wallcoverings. Some of those pieces—mostly low tables and sofas—were then chosen and produced exclusively for several Fendi boutiques worldwide. Silvia Venturini Fendi trusted in my
vision and thought that my collection represented the Fendi world, but also had strong potential commercially. After suggesting my work to Raffaella Vignatelli, the president of Fendi Casa, this collection, Back Home, was born.
company and an Italian family heritage brand run by women, both Fendi and Fendi Casa, who offered me complete freedom in the design process. We shared a common vision, so it was a very easy collaboration from start to finish.
And the influence? Silvia Venturini Fendi asked me to create a collection of furniture inspired by the Pequin—Fendi’s signature broad stripe pattern—created back in 1987, the same year Fendi Casa launched. As for the inspiration, the overall mood is from the ’70s—and, in particular, the interiors and furniture of Willy Rizzo, a decorator and photographer who worked in Rome in the mid-60s. He mixed refined luxury with a modern vision in a bold and distinct way using very rich material combinations and finishes.
Any favorites? That would be like asking a parent to name a favorite child—it’s impossible! I love different elements in each of the pieces, and I love that they work alone as either statement and iconic pieces, or equally well together.
This is a large collection—14 products! What was it like to work with the Fendi Casa team? It was an honor to collaborate with such an iconic
What were your aspirations for this collection? My hope, as it is with all of my designs, is to create pieces that express a message and a story beyond the aesthetic value. One that people remember. Fendi Casa’s quality is impeccable, so if people choose to pass this furniture down, they can certainly do so, but I never design with those preconceptions. I simply follow my heart and my imagination.

THE INSIDER VICKI PFEIL
As trends come and go, a design store must be truly distinctive to rise to the top and remain there for three decades. Miller’s Fine Hardware, which recently celebrated its 30 th anniversary, has demonstrated both stamina and style, thanks to the vision of owner Vicki Pfeil. With locations in Jupiter and West Palm Beach, Miller’s has set the standard for luxury kitchen, bath and lighting fixtures. We recently spoke with Pfeil about brandbuilding and creating her ideal kitchen. millershardware.com Store’s specialty: As the retail industry evolves with the internet, we wanted to focus more on highlighting special, exclusive lines like Waterworks, Samuel Heath and Fantini Rubinetti. And we try to find a good mixture of styles to satisfy our clientele, from traditional to transitional. Favorite kitchen, bath and lighting trends: Here in Palm Beach, we’re seeing a softer version of the traditional style, featuring crisp, clean finishes and monochromatic tones in whites and grays. And when it comes to lighting, our brands are really embracing a more industrial design, with exposed metal details—like something you’d find in a workshop. But there’s always room for a little crystal.
OUTER LIMITS P&H INTERIORS
Blurring the line between interior and exterior in a home: Can it really be done? Sliding glass doors often replace solid walls, but fusing inner and outer spaces requires more. Designers Susan Connor, Marisa Courson and Jessica Rockwood of P&H Interiors united the taste of a couple (he’s traditional; she’s contemporary) inside their Lighthouse Point home. Then they linked indoors and outdoors via materials and color. Brick on the kitchen ceiling reappears as veneer on the summer kitchen’s pizza oven. Quartzite countertops are replicated on the patio’s bar and fireplace. Blue on the island emerges outside on accent pillows and side tables. And, of course, the most obvious azure reference points, the sky and sea, are insightful creations by the most powerful designer of all. pnhinteriors.com
Memorable projects: Over the years we’ve been able to source some unusual pieces for the designers we work with. We put together a mosaic tile tray for a sink and a lion’s-head wall filler for a powder room. There’s one home in Weston that has a bowling alley, and we did a nice locker-style bathroom to accompany the space. Your dream kitchen: I just refinished my kitchen, actually. I went for a modern interpretation of a Shaker style. I love the classic lines. For finishes, I opted for large subway tiles and chrome fixtures. I prefer the simple things—nothing too flashy. 082 / LUXESOURCE.COM

The Rubell Family Collection in Wynwood has consistently stood out for its approach to art curation. Soon the perspective of collectors Don and Mera Rubell will be on a grander stage: The Rubell Museum, a 100,000-square-foot campus in Allapattah, opening December 4. Housed in a former industrial building transformed by New York’s Selldorf Architects, the museum will pull from 7,200 works by 1,000 artists. And due to the Rubells’ generosity toward artists in their early years, the collection includes pieces from acclaimed talents like Keith Haring (below) and Jeff Koons. In addition to the gallery, the property seeks to create a more holistic link with the public, supported by performance spaces, an art research library, a museum store and a restaurant. rfc.museum

▲ CARDOZO SOUTH BEACH An Ocean Drive signature since 1939, the Cardozo South Beach has returned to its former glory through a loving redux. The revamped 41-guest-room boutique hotel maintained its historic Streamline Moderne exterior seen on the silver screen in several films, from ’59’s A Hole in the Head with Frank Sinatra to ’96’s The Birdcage starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. Owners Emilio and Gloria Estefan worked with architect Aldo Ducci to refresh the interiors with contemporary white finishes that provide a canvas for artwork from their personal collection. COCONUT GROVE
Bohemian flair reaches new levels of refinement in the recent renovation of the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove hotel. Influenced by the area’s legacy as a haven for artists, Bill Rooney Studio sought to stylishly bridge the gap between sleek city retreat and tropical enclave. Taking cues from the property’s verdant surroundings, the team infused natural hues into the main lobby, with leather-wrapped columns and deep green velvet furniture. The reimagined guest rooms also showcase soft blue accents and a variety of organic textures, including raffia wallcovering, live-edge wood furniture, and modern rattan seating. Full immersion into nature is complete at the new Isabelle’s Grill Room and Garden (a tribute to one of the Grove’s earliest settlers, Isabella Peacock) which boasts a trellised garden terrace that nestles diners among lush landscaping and rich wood details. ritzcarlton.com
MR. C COCONUT GROVE Owned by Italy’s famed Cipriani family and inspired by lavish yachts, the new Mr. C Coconut Grove hotel distills the experience of cocktail hour on the high seas, featuring a streamlined, modern design by Arquitectonica. Floating on V-shaped pillars, the structure echoes luxury ocean liners of the past with porthole details and sweeping terraces that overlook Biscayne Bay and the Coconut Grove skyline. Inside the lobby lounge, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio continues the nautical glamour with high-gloss timber paneling, terrazzo flooring and Murano glass chandeliers. And for the hotel’s 100 guest rooms, the studio employed lacquered teak and custom Tedeschi furnishings in shades of marine blue. Hovering above the surrounding canopy on the top floor, the chic Bellini Restaurant and Bar (named for the drink created at Cipriani’s Harry’s Bar in Venice) boasts a modern Italian menu and classic cocktails. mrccoconutgrove.com 084 / LUXESOURCE.COM

AROUND TOWN When eight ambitious designers get their hands on five brands of lavish furnishings, they’re liable to put on a show, or, more accurately, a show house. Design Force Miami—not a squad of stylish superheroes, but a local collective consisting of Brett Sugerman and his wife, Giselle Loor Sugerman, Miguel Lewis, Odalys Hernandez, Janet Patterson, Joe Fava, Jay Britto and David Charette—has collaborated with Luxury Living Group on The Residence in Miami’s Design District. Luxury Living Group, the company that created furnishing collections with Fendi, Trussardi, Bentley and Baccarat, to name a few, provided their wares and the 7,700-squarefoot space. Design Force Miami brought the ideas, crafting lively interiors for an imaginary South American client. Amid the turquoise and cobalt velvet sofas, lacquered case goods and gleaming metallic accents are also eye-catching contributions from district neighbors: wallcoverings by Orlean, floral displays by Emilio Robba and fine art from Opera Gallery. The house is open through December 2019. luxurylivinggroup.com
LAUNCH NICOLETTE MAYER
Where others see a dining table, surface designer Nicolette Mayer sees an empty canvas begging to be adorned with lush art and antiquity. That’s the genesis behind the Boca Raton-based brand’s latest project, a vibrant tabletop collection of placemats, napkins (top) and decorative acrylic trays. With a background in historical research, Mayer has attracted a loyal following for her modern interpretations of traditional motifs for wallpaper and textiles. The new line includes some of the brand’s most beloved historical patterns, like the modern chinoiserie Blossom Fantasia (above) and Turkish-inspired Topkapi Garden (featured at the 2019 Kips Bay Palm Beach Show House). Mayer also contrasted these classical styles with new high-octane designs inspired by contemporary art, from Damien Hirst’s technicolor pills to Okunade’s kaleidoscopic animals. The result is a playful variety that invites stylish experimentation—an approach Mayer recommends. “When I entertain at home, I prefer to be more fun and spontaneous,” says the designer. “So we wanted to create products that were easy to change and mix-match.” nicolettemayer.com 086 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INTERIOR DESIGNERS
MQR DESIGN An interior by Maris Raffa isn’t complete until the fridge is stocked and the home’s signature fragrance wafts from room to room. Such is the level of detail and personalized attention she and her team at MQR Design pour into every project. It all begins with communication. “We start by learning about the family dynamic and lifestyle,” the designer says. “Whether or not it is a primary home also comes into play. We develop layouts and a budget, and then work forward with the client from there.” Once trust is built and a plan is enthusiastically agreed upon by all, they dive in. The final product often involves contemporary and modern design with organic or rustic touches—a clean but warm aesthetic. It’s a look that Maris Raffa has perfected throughout years of work. One might say her career passion began in childhood, when her mother took her to visit the masterpieces of famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. “The experience definitely left an impression that would be developed later,” she shares. “Later” was 2006, when she embarked on her first major project, Las Olas Beach Club. Following its successful completion, she established her firm, built a client base entirely through word of mouth, opened a second office and brought 15 full-time pros into the fold.

What would be your dream project? I have great admiration for the late, worldrenowned architect Zaha Hadid. One of her final projects was One Thousand Museum in Miami. I would be honored to design an interior space in such a landmark. What’s next for your firm? We are constantly staying on top of the latest trends by visiting trade shows in places like Milan, Paris, New York and São Paulo. Every year is a new adventure that surpasses our own expectations.

What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? Like many others, I cannot imagine working or doing business without all that technology now offers. We especially rely on three-dimensional renderings and the ease with which we can send and receive information quickly and effectively. As for social media, Instagram has been a game changer for everyday referencing and marketing.

While already established in the fashion world before arriving at the House of Chanel in 1983, it was Karl Lagerfeld’s 30-plus-year tenure at the helm of the French label that solidified his place in fashion history. The “more-is-more” attitude of the ’80s saw women dressing in bold patterns and figure-defining silhouettes, an attitude that’s seeing a resurgence today, where flaunting one’s personal style is celebrated more than ever.

Minimalist dressers can thank Calvin Klein for the ultimate referendum in restraint, and for giving us Kate Moss, too. Looking to neutral tones, genderbending shapes and simple silhouettes that defined his early 1990s collections (and influenced the overall sleek approach to female urban dressing of that era), the brand’s ethos of simplicity is just as applicable in one’s wardrobe as it is in the home.

Today, the kitchen is the main hub of the house, so set the scene with an oversize vase brimming with greenery. For this space, Devin Kirk, vice president of merchandising for Jayson Home, chose olive tree branches, which can last for weeks. Previous page: A gorgeous floral arrangement is a must when entertaining in your dining room. “It anchors the space, sets the tone and can be a great conversation starter, says Kirk, who styled the display with anemones, sedum, dahlias and magnolia branches in a generous white vase.

For a row house renovation in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park, Rebekah Zaveloff’s clients requested one element straightaway: a woodburning fireplace in the kitchen. The family has a summer home in Vermont with an outdoor pizza oven and wanted to bring a similar vibe to this residence. Thankfully, Zaveloff, the designer and cofounder of KitchenLab Interiors, was completely on board. “It’s all about creating spaces that feel a certain way, evoke emotion or a sense of nostalgia,” Zaveloff explains. In this case, the homeowners desired a kitchen that would recall vacation all year long. kitchenlabinteriors.com The fireplace is such a defining feature. How did you decide on its placement within the kitchen? I know from working in old homes that adding fireplaces can be a very challenging undertaking. There is a lot to consider, including chimney size, structural issues, converting gas lines, ventilation and so on. Originally, we had designed the fireplace to go on the back wall between the windows but when we demolished the space, we found an old chimney in the corner and the location really ended up being a happy accident.
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
Tell us about your approach to pattern. The patterned concrete floor tiles make the space here! In so many kitchens we incorporate wood floors, as people are nervous to commit to pattern, but the wood on wood can start to blend; it can be challenging to create contrast. Here, the tile adds a dose of drama but isn’t overwhelming. I did several versions of the design until we came up with something everyone loved with just the right balance of black and white. 140 / LUXESOURCE.COM
How is the dining room used? This space certainly changed once we opened it up to the kitchen. Before, the two rooms were separated by a large volume that housed a pantry and powder room; it felt choppy. Now, everything flows together nicely. So I decided to do away with dedicated dining, living and hall areas and instead put seating everywhere. I believe if you make spaces welcoming, people will use them!
Extra seating areas are always smart, and this cozy space in front of the fireplace houses Jayson Home’s Melrose Chair in spice velvet with a Siren Song pillow. Custom Villa Lagoon Tile, selected by designer Rebekah Zaveloff, decorates the floor.
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
Think outside the box when it comes to the mantel. Fig branches provide an interesting pop of green while a marbleized teapot adds unexpected charm and a pretty silhouette. Few things are more important than good lighting and a scattering of candlesticks ensures the festivities will continue by candlelight, says Kirk.

A good tray is the unsung hero of the bar: It instantly corrals bottles and glassware making the space look more put together. INSPIRATION ON DISPLAY Behind each unique and industry-leading StudioBecker project lies a passion for innovative technology, contemporary art and outside-thebox material usage. For the project shown here, the team designed a floating wine cellar display utilizing a threaded-wire suspension system that gently and securely cradles each bottle between chamfered walnut blocks. The wine display is enclosed in glass, serving as both a central art piece within the living space and properly cooled wine storage.

LEAVE FORMALITIES AT THE DOOR: TODAY’S TAKE ON HAUTE HOSTING CALLS FOR INTIMACY, INDIVIDUALITY AND JOIE DE VIVRE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT
LIGHTEN UP Silver polish, starched linens, seafood forks: Mercifully, such ceremony is no longer a must. As Luxe uncovers, it’s the entirely personal and surprising experiences that leave a lasting impression. Over the next few pages, designers and creatives weigh in on the conversation, encouraging us to pair heirloom dishware with bold linens and wild vines, to outfit guest rooms with raucous minibars, and by all means, to mingle beyond the bounds of the living and dining areas, as evidenced by this sumptuous yet laid-back music room by interior designer Heather Hilliard. Mind you, this “new” approach to fine entertaining isn’t so much new as a swinging of the pendulum: “Mrs. Astor was known for her infamous Midnight Suppers,” recalls event designer Rebecca Gardner. “These were intimate after-parties where she served ridiculously casual food like spaghetti and meatballs on her finest china. The beginning of high-low!” Take a page from the infamous socialite’s book, and toast to the season.

HISTORY REPEATS In Victorian-era England, drawing rooms were a prerequisite for any fine home, providing an elegant hub to “withdraw” for post-dinner merriment. Fast-forward a century and change, and the room’s intentionality is enjoying a renaissance, thanks to reinvigorated demand for defined entertaining spaces. Here, Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners adapted the concept on the parlor floor of a historic 1856 Chelsea townhouse, deftly eschewing any stuffy connotations in the process. “We reinterpreted the home’s original Italianate revival moldings into a more streamlined and proportionate version that still held the intended gravitas of the room,” explains Kevin Blusewicz, senior associate at Steven Harris Architects. Joined by convivial seating arrangements, a “discrete yet assertive” color scheme and impressively scaled new windows that bathe the room in sunlight, the grand bones appear to soften and relax. reesroberts.com

THREE A-LIST EVENT DESIGNERS SOUND OFF ON THE SIGNATURE PARTY TRICK THAT WILL KEEP GUESTS BUZZING.
REBECCA GARDNER
Founder and Creative Director, Houses & Parties Reimagine the classics. I like to set the table with my best pieces, most of which belonged to my grandmother, but I avoid being stuffy. The key is to be a little irreverent with anything fancy. One way to do this is to layer patterns on top of each other, like a floral Meissen dinner plate on top of a chintz fabric. I prefer big, luscious flowers that are just about to fall apart and unruly vines that twist around place settings. You can also repurpose: consider fingers bowls for ice cream sundaes and nut dishes for colorful candies. If you make the table a little wild and naughty, guests will behave accordingly. rebecca-gardner.com

From industry galas to society weddings, a distinct pattern in floral design has emerged: single-bloom arrangements. Lush and unfussy, this shift is actualized by Poshan, a new Manhattan-based floral atelier. With Art Deco-inspired linen packaging and a mission of celebrating the singular beauty of rare varieties, Poshan has become a fast favorite of the fashion crowd. Here, founder Wu York shares his approach. poshanflowers.com Inspiration behind Poshan: I couldn’t find floral arrangements that I loved, so I created them. I use single flowers in powerfully simple arrangements, without any “filler” or greens. I base the overall sculptural shape on what’s available at the market each morning. Clients are asking for: English roses! And seasonal flowers, like tree peonies and fresh French lavender. Floral wisdom to live by: Less is more. Focus on quality flowers displayed in special, handmade vessels. People appreciate these two elements now more than ever.

Of course, this means keeping things tasteful and proportionate, but larger design elements will act as conversation starters and add energy to your event. When a room fills with people, many traditional touches, like linens, florals and candlelight, are ultimately obscured by bodies. SHAPE SHIFTER Lato x Lato, the design lab from architect couple Francesco Breganze de Capnist and Virginia Valentini, touts its debut collection as “inspired by Italian architectural heritage, reframed for a contemporary global aesthetic.” One look at the Vestalia candleholder and this ethos is rendered in clarity: What appears as a single slab of imperial green marble is actually a series of movable, hinged parts, a reference to 1930s Rationalist architecture. Candlelight turned conversation starter. latoxlato.com

Boutique establishments brimming with personal touches and memorable amenities have fast become the new wave of luxury hotels. So, where could be a more prescient well to draw inspiration from for our own guest quarters this season? We turned to the riotously beautiful NOLA hot spot Maison de la Luz, designed by Atelier Ace and Studio Shamshiri, for a lesson in idiosyncratic design and Southern hospitality. maisondelaluz.com
⊳ DOWN TIME Thrice daily meals together can test even the dearest of friends and family, which makes the integration of a private guest nook for morning coffees or solo meals a bonus for all. Let Maison de la Luz’s intimate window adjacent seating areas, each equipped with loungefriendly seating and copper-topped “séance tables” etched in astrological motifs, remind that this setup can nest happily in guest accommodations of all shapes and sizes.
IN GOOD SPIRITS ⊲ Throughout the hotel’s 36 king rooms, a festive tone is set by the trading of nightstands for decadent bedside minibars. A selection of top-shelf libations— amongst them, Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whiskey and Ruinart Brut Rosé—sit atop a bespoke bar cabinet, which in turn encloses an artful collection of highball and champagne glasses. Brass ice buckets in the shape of a pineapple cheekily harken back to the hotel’s overarching design goal: moments of rebellion within the envelope of traditional hospitality.
▲ DETAIL ORIENTED When it came to conceptualizing the en suites, Studio Shamshiri principal designer Pamela Shamshiri “leaned into classic hotel iconography: waffle robes, incredible towels and all-stone bathrooms.” But luxuriant amenities extend beyond these focal details to smaller nuances of the bathroom design. Note, for example, the patinaed silver vanity set by Pigeon and Poodle and the merchandized curation of Grown Alchemist toiletries; chic and considered final flourishes for any guest setup.

DOUBLE ACT Litchfield, Connecticut-based architect and designer Julia Metcalf is not a fan of the phrase “she shed,” but admits it applies to this jewel box study, which moonlights as a chic cocktail lounge. “The client wanted a place to hide away, to work and to entertain in privacy,” says Metcalf. To welcome the addition of company, a traditional desk chair was replaced with a custom settee, and the Zuber wallpaper-clad bar area holds a rainbow of vintage glassware (sourced at the Brimfield Antique Show) set atop highgloss, piano-finish built-ins concealing a petite wine refrigerator. With the stashing of a laptop, the glamorous work space takes on the persona of an intimate speakeasy where only a chosen few gain admittance. juliametcalfdesigns.com

Made in America MIAMI
For many, the phrase “Made in America” forms an image: a craftsman bent over a workbench, focused on his latest passion project. But it also embodies innovation and an industrial spirit; a belief in taking risks and an unwillingness to compromise on quality. At the heart of it all is a mission to make life better, detail by detail. That is the dream on which this country was founded and the vision that continues to drive it today—one of ownership, safety, freedom and comfort. These are the guiding influences for America’s makers and mavens.

“Our mission is to become a global leader in the design, production and distribution of tailor-made blinds and shades. It all culminates in trailblazing systems and fabrics that have earned Bandalux the reputation of dominating the luxury sector. Ingenuity and collaboration are hallmarks of American industry, and WineCab exemplifies that heritage beautifully. After recognizing limitations within premium wine storage and display, Mark Chaney combined his own passion for vinology with the revolutionary technologies of his first major business, Calvary Robotics. The result is a series of products that have changed forever the oenophile’s experience. “Our robotically managed models offer precision-controlled temperature and humidity settings, cataloging specific to individual bottles and overall inventory management, automatic replenishment and pouring capabilities, fingerprint locks and smartphone integration,” Chaney says. Designed and produced in America, WineCab’s systems are influenced by their country of origin. Americans, Chaney says, are embracing innovation and prioritizing personalization—and many of them love a glass of wine.

PRIDE OF PLACE When asked why basing design and production in America is important to him, Chaney points to a desire to bolster his own communities and the benefits of keeping things close to home. “It is my belief that robotic and artificial intelligence advancements are important to U.S. job creation and national security,” he says. “I am proud to know that we are adding hundreds of jobs in the Rochester, New York, area where our facilities are located. ike a good conversation, a space ideally suited for entertaining should encourage free-flowing, organic interaction. Designer Carolyn McCarthy realized early on that her clients’ Coral Gables residence lacked that key element. Partitioned by too many walls, the abode’s gathering areas were siloed. And despite a prime Coral Gables Waterway location, the home didn’t take full advantage of its picturesque setting. On top of all that, the original design was planted firmly in the 1980s. What began as a small project evolved into a two-year, topto-bottom renovation for McCarthy, architect Ryan Alderman, general contractor Jordan Gruber and builder Jason Elmer. Having collaborated with the owners previously, the designer knew how important the social spaces would be. “I had spent the past two years prior working on their children’s houses, so I had a good sense of how they entertained,” she says. “Every weekend, they host probably 20 people for dinner.” Restructuring the clients’ home to fit their lifestyle meant removing several confining walls and doors as well as liberating obstructed vistas. Gruber and Elmer replaced a dining room wall with glass-enclosed wine storage and substituted the staircase’s thick wood balustrade for stainless steel and glass, facilitating views to the outdoors even from the kitchen. They also knocked down the wall between the family and living areas, creating one expansive space, and removed the latter’s 10-foot-high, 15-foot-long cherry built-in in favor of a fireplace of book-matched marble. “I felt like I needed a strong focal point when you walked in,” McCarthy explains. Among the most striking aspects of the redesign, the home’s foyer originally featured a sizable dark wood door prefaced by a long porch. Gruber and Elmer brought the entry forward, doubling the dimensions of the foyer, and installed a 12-foot glass pivot front door to capitalize on the natural light. Yet that’s not the greatest expanse of glass

they added to the home. The living area’s glass doors span an entire wall’s length, open wide and stack unobtrusively to encourage indoor-outdoor living. Even better? The idyllic waterfront landscape can now be seen from the foyer. For a family who lives to entertain—and lives in a balmy tropical climate—outdoor space is the holy grail. In the backyard, to enlarge the upper terrace, the team filled in a set of steps that had led to the pool; a barbecue pavilion was added as well. Among the grounds, landscape designer John Farrar complemented the water view with beach creeper, Lignum vitae trees and a grove of Satakentia liukiuensis palms. “We really tried to make sure all the plant material was pretty mature and at a good height so, even from their second-floor windows, the owners had almost fairly immediate privacy,” he says. In addition to fashioning spaces geared to hosting guests, McCarthy had to take another critical component into account for the redesign: the owners’ ample collection of artworks by Cuban masters. She initially considered hanging the paintings salon-style in the upstairs family room until an art-hanging consultant made a salient point. “He looked at me and asked, ‘Have you ever seen a Monet hanging above a Monet?’ And I said, ‘Point taken,’ ” she laughs. “Because they are different artists and are probably all of equal reputation, we worked on balancing size and scale as well as framing. We reframed only a few pieces, because they were so beautiful on their own.” Just as imperative was the way each work of art was illuminated. “One of the first things we did with the owners was pinpoint locations for pieces,” Elmer recalls. For certain major walls, he and Gruber installed recessed track lighting with adjustable heads that can be moved and changed depending on the artwork. “A lot of collectors like to cycle through their paintings throughout the years of living in their homes,” Gruber notes. To ensure the artwork remains the center of attention, McCarthy kept the walls white and decor a quiet palette of cozy grays—no big splashes of color—for a clean, modern look. Yet to prevent the design from being too austere, she incorporated wood—particularly walnut, which appears in places such as the beams lining the living area’s lofty ceiling. “The furnishings were how I really tried to warm it up,” she says. “For example, the living area rug has a lot of soothing tones, and it picked up so nicely on the veining of the marble on the fireplace.” With geometric shapes and neutral hues, the furniture amplifies the renovated architecture as well as the waterfront view. In the end, McCarthy says, the new open flow and connection to the outdoors are what make the home so inviting. “I really love that modern tropical effect you get when the doors are all open and the breeze is coming through,” she says. “There’s a great romance to it all when you walk in and see the water.”

CHANGING TIDES MIAMI ARTIST MOREL DOUCET DEPICTS THE CITY’S TRANSFORMATIONS THROUGH CLAY AND CHARCOAL. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH / PHOTOGRAPHY BY SONYA REVELL

ith sugar-white coastlines and crystalline waters, Miami exists as a sundappled utopia in many minds. But a nuanced, more complicated paradise is portrayed in the ceramics and drawings of local artist Morel Doucet. His creations yield otherworldly landscapes that reveal the city’s changing habitat, environmentally and socially. “I’m interested in exploring the human connection to nature,” he explains. “My work is about seeing our surroundings in their raw form and understanding their real history.” Doucet has filtered his own history through nature since moving as a child from Haiti to Miami in the early 1990s. “Here, the landscape was familiar, with the same palm trees and plants,” he recalls. “I learned then to see the landscape through the lens of memory.” Art magnet school programs were also fruitful creative ground, and Doucet quickly gravitated to clay. “I come from a farming family on my mother’s side, so I grew up around this rich red earth,” he says. “Clay in its raw form made me feel more connected to the land.” When Doucet returned to Miami in 2013, after graduating from the Maryland Institute College of Art, his relationship with nature intensified. As rising sea levels and red tide affected the coastline, historically black neighborhoods like his own, Little Haiti, faced gentrification pressure from developers. He confronts this notion in his ceramic series, “White Noise: When Raindrop Whispers and Moonlight Screams in Silence.” The artist slip casts and hand-carves elaborate shells, sea creatures and coral polyps in pristine porcelain, which echo bleached coral reefs. These ghostly forms creep over replicas of childhood relics, like his mother’s rococo-style teapots, or completely consume figurines, erasing their faces and bodies.
For Doucet, stripping away nature’s hues also evokes the painful history of colorism in the black community—particularly skin bleaching, a practice “still prevalent in Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic,” he notes. Nature is medium and message in “The Dirt Beneath Our Nails Still Pray to the Midnight Sun,” Doucet’s drawings that aim to record and preserve “Miami’s black communities through their plants and people,” he says. His process entails layering organic matter from towns such as Allapattah, Carol City and Overtown onto his charcoal portraits of residents. “I’m essentially an archaeologist in the streets, picking up branches, pine cones and leaves,” he says. Doucet’s sunny studio at the Bakehouse Art Complex holds the artifacts, waiting to inspire a shape, color or memory in his work. And when all else fails, “I go outside,” he says. “Once I’m in nature, everything becomes more concrete.”
The multimedia works of Miami artist Morel Doucet combine his charcoal drawings of area residents with organic matter from their neighborhood. His ceramics explore issues such as gentrification and colorism.

or years, a Pinecrest couple and their three children resided in a modest 1958 ranch-style home on a nearly one-acre parcel. While the expansive setting proved ideal for an energetic family of five, the humble abode was never quite as hospitable. Naturally, they dreamt of building a larger residence on the site. “We wanted a house with different functional areas so people could spread out, enjoy it and not be on top of each other,” the wife says. “When you have teenagers, you really need a space for them to bring their friends over.” When the timing was finally right, the couple commissioned interior designer Ivette Arango and architect Antonio E. Rodriguez to realize their vision. The result is a one-level contemporary stucco home with oversize doors and windows that frame views of the lush grounds and innovative water features, giving the home the effect of a peaceful island escape. At the front of the residence, a keystone walkway leads across a serene pool to the entry door, which is protected by an overhang with an ipe wood ceiling. Cantilevered over the water, the house appears to be floating; even its rooflines seem to hover over one another, creating the feeling of several cabanas grouped together, as though it is a resort. “The property is like an oasis,” Rodriguez says. “Although it’s modern with lots of glass, it’s still a cozy house with a really nice tropical feel.” The foyer opens to the double-height formal living area, where a fire box accented with a heavily textured porcelain

complements the home’s large-scale porcelain tile flooring. Maintaining the focus on the lush backyard, Arango kept the home’s walls white and covered the tailored furnishings in a soothing palette of neutral-colored fabrics. “Everything relates, and it feels good when you walk in,” she says. “Nothing jumps out at you.” In this way, the design honors the clean-lined interior architecture, which features recessed baseboards and open corridors unobstructed by headers. The lighting is equally subtle—and just as important, especially for highlighting the owners’ art collection displayed throughout the residence. “Lighting creates a background,” Arango explains. “It gives the room the mood you want, and it enhances the art and furniture.” The living area’s domed ceiling is back lit, with a merger track system that allows for spotlights to be added to highlight particular artworks and walls. “We like to do a lot of special details with our ceilings, because this is the fifth wall in the room,” says general contractor Ken Gomberg. In the family room, a wood veneer-paneled ceiling that cascades down one wall is illuminated from behind. And also lit from the back, the onyx backsplash of the space’s wet bar appears to glow. While the new construction fulfills the clients’ desires for different gathering areas, the private spaces have not been overlooked. In the master bedroom, for instance, Arango upholstered the wall behind the bed in fabric and housed the TV within sycamore wood wall panels, creating an enveloping feeling. “This room embraces you,” she says. Like all the prominent spaces, the master bedroom opens to the backyard, where landscape designer Jesse Plasencia incorporated celestial palms, large oaks to fill in the existing canopy and black ironwoods around the perimeter, blocking views of the neighbors. “It’s completely private and has a resort-like feel,” Plasencia says. “It’s tranquil.” Adding to that feeling are the property’s many covered patios, which include spaces for exterior living and dining. Detached structures flank the swimming pool behind the home—a guest cabana with its own poolside patio, and a covered seating area in front of a fire pit. “I’m very earthy, and I like the stone, fire and water concept,” the wife says. Just as the owners envisioned, their new home provides something for everyone, including plenty of room for their children’s friends. And despite its contemporary look, the residence is far from cold, offering a feeling of tranquility without fail. “Even when we come home from vacation, we have that ‘ah’ moment,” the wife says. “It’s such a wonderful space.”

An open-concept fire pit occupies a surround made of Opustone’s filled coral and lava stone.

Arango designed the family room sectional, which holds pillows made of a Romo textile, and storage ottomans in Garrett Leather material. Bernhardt side tables and a Surya rug complete the look. Between the owners’ artworks, Anima Domus barstools face a wall of illuminated onyx. Bon Vivant Fine Custom Woodworking fabricated the shelving using lacquer-satin wood.

Atop porcelain floor tiles from Valencia Coverings, leather Euro Style swivel chairs in the breakfast area surround a lacquer-wood Mobital table with a cone-shaped textured concrete base. By the cabinetry, the grass-cloth Hartmann & Forbes wallcovering from Jeffrey Michaels has a shell, raffia and metallic finish.
The master bathroom’s textured vinyl MDC wallcovering complements the cabinetry by Hector & Hector and countertop of Opustone’s Thassos marble. The MTI Boutique Collection tub, Newport Brass tub filler, frameless LED-lit mirror and wall-mounted Rohl faucet are from Ferguson.
Plush chaises in Colefax and Fowler fabric and Bernhardt side tables add to the soothing atmosphere of the master bedroom. Arango designed the bench, bed and headboard wall in a Romo material as well as the lacquered wood nightstand, which holds a Sonneman lamp. A Surya rug covers white oak wood from Carlisle Wide Plank Floors.
