EDITOR’S LETTER
W
ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES
LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”
LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68
Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

LAIR: RADICAL HOMES AND HIDEOUTS OF MOVIE VILLAINS Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the archrival of MI6 agent James Bond, masterminded his evil plans inside a hollowed-out Japanese volcano with a retractable roof, helipad, deadly fish pond and floating staircases. Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor, schemed inside a swanky den of demise appointed with Botticino marble staircases, Beaux-Arts chandeliers and a swimming pool set within a palm tree-lined, fauxsunlit atrium—all buried beneath the depths of New York City’s Grand Central Station. Good homes sometimes happen to bad people—at least in the cinematic universe. These luxurious retreats and 13 others are the subjects of Lair: Radical Homes and Hideouts of Movie Villains by Miami-based architect Chad Oppenheim and writer and editor Andrea Gollin, who examine a selection of the most intriguing, ingenious dwellings owned by some of the most notorious fictional bad guys we love to hate. trapublishing.com/ products/lair 082 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Visitors and locals alike are mesmerized by the time capsule of Old Florida glamour at The Breakers, including fine art photographer Gray Malin. His latest series, “Gray Malin in Palm Beach,” personifies the era with models donning swimming caps by the pool or seated behind the wheel of a vintage sports car while wearing brightly colored shift dresses from the Lilly Pulitzer archives. The photos were shot at The Breakers as well as other locales on the island. “From the dazzling lobby to its enchanting courtyards, The Breakers is truly a symbol of Palm Beach in all its grandeur,” the photographer says, “as I set out to recreate the style and feel of the 1950s-’60s Palm Beach, collaborating with Lilly Pulitzer and other vintage brands felt natural in bringing this series to life.” Previously, Malin photographed a similar series at the Parker Palm Springs, Coral Casino, The Beverly Hills Hotel and in Bermuda. His Palm Beach work will be on display with prints for sale at The Breakers beginning January 14. graymalin.com

FIRST LOOK THE ESTATES AT ACQUALINA
BEHIND the BLOOM
ROSE COLOURED FLORAL
Ritzy but never glitzy, The Estates at Acqualina in Sunny Isles Beach reinforces the brand’s reputation as the last word in refined upscale living. Its turnkey residences, which align the design talents of award-winning firm STA Architectural Group with Luxury Living’s superlative fine furnishings, cater to the present-day pursuit of instant gratification. Upon entering the lobbies, residents and visitors are in the midst of one of the last commissions by the late Karl Lagerfeld, who infused custom features into what he called the “common rooms.” Throughout the Estates, expansive spaces are curated with showstopping light fixtures from Fendi, Bentley and Baccarat’s home lines, exotic surfaces and materials, and walls of glass showcasing ocean vistas and city skylines. “Understanding we are designing for the resident with discerning taste and an eye for quality, we engaged in careful research and development to maximize the views and ceiling heights,” says STA principal Isabel Saavedra-Tragash. Seasoned developers Jules and Eddie Trump have indeed brought their vision of effortless elegance into being; there’s no hassle, no delay and no question that everything the buyer could ask for, including a couture kitchen complete with an exceptional La Cornue gas range, is right at their fingertips. estatesatacqualina.com
How was Rose Coloured Floral conceived? In 2012, I was asked to assist a florist friend with a wedding and quickly fell in love with arranging and experimenting with design. I studied art history in London, where I received my Master of Arts, then relocated to Miami. Two years in, after an especially stressful week, I gifted myself two buckets of flowers from the public market, which led to an afternoon of non-stop inspiration— and Rose Coloured was born. What makes your studio stand out among others? We take an artistic
approach to floral design, placing an emphasis on texture, movement, shape and color. Rose Coloured offers a platform for local artist collaborations, bridging flower arranging with varying art practices. Are there colors you want to experiment with this year? I’ve been really inspired by red-on-red palettes lately. And while I’ve shied away from the boldness of the color in years past, I’m looking forward to playing with the traditional hue in new, unexpected ways.

Those who view life through rose-colored glasses are thought to perceive things as better than they truly are, but Sara Rose Darling’s optimistic outlook is justified. “Flowers can make our daily lives brighter,” says the founder and creator of Rose Coloured Floral, a bespoke floral design studio in Miami that emphasizes flowers as an art form. “They’re scientifically proven to boost our moods.” She opened her brick-and-mortar shop (appropriately) last Valentine’s Day and it’s blossomed ever since, with a clientele that includes Lizzo and Adidas Originals with David Beckham. Darling chatted with Luxe about her blooming business. rosecolouredfloral.com

Louis Vuitton’s annual Objets Nomades collection made its American debut during Design Miami in December, showcasing the brand’s infusion into home design. The iconic French fashion house tapped the likes of Raw Edges (above), Atelier Oï, Maarten Baas, Zanelatto Bortotto (below), and other top designers to create furniture and homewares that marry experimentation with functionality to then be made in a way that only Louis Vuitton can. Notably, this year marks the first time Louis Vuitton included the works of an American designer to be included in the collection since its inception in 2012: San Francisco-based architect and designer Andrew Kudless, whose work and the other pieces from Objets Nomades are on display at Louis Vuitton in the Miami Design District through spring. us.louisvuitton.com
“MAREN HASSINGER: TREE OF KNOWLEDGE” A tree grows in Boca, and it’s one unlike any the world has ever seen. Renowned sculptor and performance artist Maren Hassinger has created a site-specific installation based on the Tree of Knowledge, a majestic 100-year-old banyan rooted in Pearl City, the city’s first residential community that was founded in 1915 by African Americans and remains designated as a historic district. The monumental product of a hands-on community effort, Hassinger’s “tree” is comprised of thousands of recycled newspapers rolled and twisted into “branches” by the project’s participants. “Maren Hassinger: Tree of Knowledge” is on view at The Boca Museum of Art through March 1, while its muse, the nature-made version, can be seen within walking distance of the museum. bocamuseum.org

Through her evocative interpretations of natural phenomena, Teresita Fernández has become one of the country’s leading contemporary artists. A wide range of materials from onyx to glass to graphite, and wondrous subjects including meteor showers, cloud formations and the night sky, are all fair game for Fernández. In a survey titled “Teresita Fernández: Elemental,” she intertwines the sublime nature of traditional landscapes with the violent history and current sociopolitical climate of the United States. The traveling exhibition, which features more than 50 of the artist’s large-scale sculptures, installations and other works, debuted at Pérez Art Museum Miami and will remain through February 9, when it departs for its next destination. pamm.org

ART for LIVING
Wildly persevering, Georgia O’Keeffe created art nearly until her last breath, and her bold and groundbreaking body of work is etched in American Modernist history. If she were alive today, O’Keeffe would meld perfectly with today’s culture, in which women live unapologetically and without compromise. “Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern,” at The Norton Museum of Art through February 2, examines how the legendary artist declared her independence by generating a persona of her own design. What she wore, where she lived and even the way she posed for the camera are all part of this study of how O’Keeffe orchestrated the public’s perception of her. In addition to a selection of paintings and garments, the exhibition presents images of O’Keeffe and her homes by illustrious photographers Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber and others. norton.org

Now, thanks to an exclusive service offered only at the Worth Avenue flagship boutique, ladies can snag a textured gold crossbody bag or cork-inspired clutch with nailhead detailing, both bearing the signature “Lilly” emblem, and hire the shop’s in-house artist Melissa Sixma Lingo to hand paint a design of their choosing. The boutique 12-acre waterfront property has reopened after an extensive restoration designed to bring the two-story, thatchedroof beach house back to its original grandeur. DEFINING MOMENT
MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING
6
Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.
GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME
Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

Where the term “foosball table” tends to evoke grungy dive bars and fraternity basements, the 90° Minuto Foosball Table by innovative Italian brand Teckell provides a welcome—read: terribly chic—turning of the tides in gaming accessories. With a 12 millimeter-thick crystal playing field, polished stainless-steel goals and a solid Canaletto walnut frame, the playful rec room addition reads as much objet d’art as competitive distraction. KidSanctuary Campus
The Sprayregen Cottage for Boys - built in 2018 (One of the 4 cottages)
A Campus With Cottages of Hope for Children in Foster Care Connie Frankino has always been an advocate for at- risk children and when she learned that our local foster care system was in crises, she decided to do something about it. For over a decade as Founder and Chairman of The Board of KidSanctuary Campus, she has led the crusade to create a family style campus with beautiful cottages for children in the local foster care system.
Connie M. Frankino KidSanctuary Campus Founder & Visionary Chairman of the Board
Debra M. Tornaben KidSanctuary Campus President of Development
KidSanctuary Campus was founded in 2009 with a mission to ensure that each child that lives on campus receive the benefits of a sense of belonging and permanency in a caring and positive environment that nurtures self-esteem and hope. The children stay in one of four beautiful cottages on the secure 10-acre campus in West Palm Beach until they are re-united with parents, adopted or age out of the system. In December of 2012, under Connie’s steadfast leadership, KidSanctuary Campus opened the doors of its first home, The Rubin Cottage. The second home, The Dodero Family Cottage, celebrated its
grand opening on August 1, 2014, and in honor of Connie’s late husband, Sam’s Cottage for Boys opened in 2015. The Sprayregen Cottage for Boys opened in 2018 and this cottage along with a beautiful outdoor Pavilion completed Phase 1 of the KidSanctuary Campus Development Plan. All of the cottages are debtfree and are decorated with love by over 40 local designers and over 200 local vendors. KidSanctuary Campus is a vital community resource and it is more important today than ever. KidSanctuary Campus has launched the 1000 Wishes Ambassadors Campaign to support Phase II of the development plan which includes the new Angel Crossing Enrichment Center that is scheduled to break ground in 2020. The center will serve as a nucleus for children living on campus and will include case management offices, therapy and tutoring suites, a library and study center, a theatre, multi-purpose room for special events and family visits and more.
Cottages of Hope that Impact Change To date, KidSanctuary Campus has served nearly 100 children with the average length of stay being 6 months to a year on a case to case basis with one child staying on campus for as long as 6 years. Today over 400,000 children in America are in foster care and many of them need placement with their siblings. Studies show it is vital to keep siblings together to maintain some stability in their arduous lives. Recently, there have been four sibling groups residing on campus with one set being twin girls. One of the twins saved enough money to buy her own car while graduating with a 4.0 GPA. Also this past spring, beating all odds, the campus case manager proudly reported that all four of the high school students living on campus have been accepted into college and are enrolled. Each of the children vary in age and ethnicity with cultural differences and backgrounds, but the trauma of abuse and neglect unites them. Together the children heal with promise for a better tomorrow from the bricks of hope that built the cottages and the love and support received from the community that built this “Sanctuary Campus. We are looking for Ambassadors to help reach our 3 million goal and an Angel to name the campus. Leave a legacy of hope for the foster care children living on campus and for those to follow. Become a KidSanctuary Campus Ambassador and directly impact the lives of local foster care children!
I AM SAFE. I AM LOVED. I MATTER. To become an Ambassador, for Naming Opportunities, Event information or other ways to make a difference in the lives of local foster care children call Debra M. Tornaben at 561-653-8274 or visit www.KidSanctuaryCampus.org

INSPIRATION ON DISPLAY Behind each unique and industry-leading StudioBecker project lies a passion for innovative technology, contemporary art and outside-thebox material usage. For the project shown here, the team designed a floating wine cellar display utilizing a threaded-wire suspension system that gently and securely cradles each bottle between chamfered walnut blocks. The wine display is enclosed in glass, serving as both a central art piece within the living space and properly cooled wine storage.

ARCHITECTS
SMITH AND MOORE ARCHITECTS The team at Smith and Moore Architects employs a holistic approach to their work. “We always begin with an understanding of architectural traditions, contextual relationships and the seamless integration of indoors and out, which is critical,” says principal Daniel Kahan, who leads the firm alongside Peter Papadopoulos, Harold Smith and Jonathan Moore. “Working in close collaboration with landscape and interior designers, we create projects with a sense of place and permanence.” As for the style of architecture they most frequently work in … there isn’t one. “Our designs range vastly, from ornately wrought classical to highly distilled modernism,” Kahan explains. “Ultimately, our favorite project is any that allows us to dive into the minutiae and craft of our work.” The relationship with the client, too, is a fulfilling aspect for everyone at Smith and Moore. Kahan and the team encourage openness and honesty, endeavoring to understand how the homeowner truly lives, moment to moment. And that isn’t all they pay attention to. “Our clients possess exceptional minds that bring perspective to our designs,” Kahan says. “One of our greatest challenges and rewards is always to figure out how we can channel that brilliance into the home we are creating for them.”
Peter Papadopoulos, Daniel Kahan, Jonathan Moore and Harold Smith Principal Architects 561.835.1888 smithandmoorearchitects smithmoorearchitects.com
“ A successful project captures the idiosyncrasies and most unique characteristics of its owner.”
Ask the Expert 1
What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? We employ traditional methods of design, such as drawing by hand and making physical models, while also embracing cutting-edge technology. We consistently use threedimensional modeling and printing to help our clients fully understand our proposed solutions. Share your influences and inspirations. Our work is broadly influenced by the world around us, particularly in the areas of art, architecture and science. Much of the basis for our work comes from the study of classical traditions in architecture and interpretations of them by our modern forebears.

What’s next for the firm? We are branching out into similar luxury markets around the U.S. and globally, including New York, California, Europe and Asia. We are also offering interior design services on select projects, with the idea of approaching design in the manner of the German Gesamtkunstwerk.

HOME BUILDERS + REMODELERS
KROME CONSTRUCTION To say that Krome Construction’s growth has been impressive is an understatement. Just two years ago, Jason Elmer and Jordan Gruber were responsible for every aspect of their business, from in-house operations to the management of each project the firm took on. But today, Krome has 18 employees contributing to work that has already been published and acclaimed by other pros in the industry. The recipe for such success? “Our approach has been about being detail- and client-oriented, while inspiring our staff to do so as well,” Elmer says. “We know how important it is to treat our employees well and celebrate their successes. We want them to be a family, and we think this leads to a team that really connects with and takes care of our clients.” And that they do; the referrals prove it. Most of Krome’s projects, which have spanned South Florida from Fort Lauderdale to South of Fifth and Coconut Grove, have come via word of mouth. “Our goal is to bring the client’s ideas and concepts to life while maintaining a structure of schedule and budget,” Gruber says. “We pride ourselves on proposing solutions and not shying away from challenges. At this point, we want to continue with our initial formula: be honest, deliver top-notch service and strive to be the best-quality builder there is.” Sounds like a plan.
Jason Elmer and Jordan Gruber Co-Founders and Presidents 786.536.4249 kromeconstruction kromeconstruction.com
“ Doing what we love has led us to create a team of passionate, hardworking individuals with a common vision to build beautiful homes for our clients.”
1
Ask the Expert How can the client work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Without a doubt, the most successful projects happen when the client brings us on at the beginning. We have very close relationships with award-winning architects and designers, and when we are a part of the design phase, we can contribute money-saving methods and valuable engineering insight.

What’s next for the firm? We are currently working on a 10,000-square-foot renovation in Key Biscayne, in which the owners are incorporating incredibly unique pieces, artifacts and styles from their travels. The majority of our work consists of condominiums and home renovations/additions, but we have completed a few, very significant single-family residences from the ground up. We look forward to focusing on that as a future segment of our portfolio.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS
BBH DESIGN STUDIO With years of experience in both the U.S. and Venezuela, the directors behind BBH Design Studio boast a diverse portfolio. Although their background is primarily architectural, Debbie Flicki, Hani Flicki and Sete Bassan have worked to master the art of design-build projects, providing interior design, decorating and construction services as well. Respecting the needs, desires and budgets of their clients, the trio strives to create spaces that speak to their unique inhabitants. “We have been extremely fortunate to have the best clients, who come from all corners of the earth,” they say. “They are highly educated, successful professionals and entrepreneurs who appreciate art. To them, luxury is about freedom, space, light, the pleasure of living and the money to experience it all.” It comes as little surprise, then, to learn of the team’s process, which relies on an integration of surroundings and the owner’s personality. “We try to enhance interior environments by using natural light and colors to build flow,” they say. “Contemporary architecture, dramatic contrasts, textures and the incorporation of exotic materials define our work, but the client’s preferences are continually consulted. A successful project is one in which both client and creator are satisfied with the final product.”
Hani Flicki, Sete Bassan and Debbie Flicki Directors 305.702.0028 bbhdesignstudio bbhdesignstudio.com
“ When we design, we feel like we’re directing a symphony, coordinating space, light and nature to create a balanced, peaceful harmony.”
Ask the Expert Describe the philosophy behind your firm. We believe space and light, together with the client’s needs and wants, are the initial steppingstones for the creation of rich, harmonious and clean designs that make our clients happy and satisfy our own artistic ambitions. What have been some milestones in your firm’s success? Recognition from our clients and prizes we have won from our peers, such as those from Salón Malaussena and Bienal Panamericana de Arquitectura de Quito.

FANNY HAIM & ASSOCIATES From a gorgeous seaside mansion in South Florida, to a hotel in Shanghai, Fanny Haim has brought her considerable design skills to projects in locales around the world. Known for architectural and understated elegance, Haim’s firm, Fanny Haim & Associates, shies away from trends and strives for an element of classicism in all it does. “Our philosophy is based on three concepts: individuality, appropriateness and timelessness,” Haim says. “We want to create a sense of identification for the client within their space, and we believe a design should remain relevant rather than be impacted by fads of the moment.” While all of these principles are evident in the firm’s portfolio, one outweighs the rest when it comes to Haim’s personal fulfillment. “The biggest satisfaction is when a client steps into the finished product, feels identified and says, ‘You got me. This is me,’” she says. “This is why we spend so much time in conversation, searching for answers even in what is unsaid.” Other signature features of Haim’s award-winning work include an extensive use of textures, monochromatic color schemes and a sense of ambiguity. Of the latter, she says, “It is an element of surprise, like a silent dialogue between items of diverse and unexpected provenance within the context of a classic space.”

Ask the Expert Describe your clientele. They are often seeking a second or third home in Miami. Sophisticated, well-traveled and, frequently, collectors of art, they enjoy the creative process and always end up becoming friends by the end. Your greatest success? Remaining relevant over a long period of time and being able to create long-term relationships with my clients. In this fickle and competitive industry, it’s very rewarding that our clients return again and again. In fact, they never really go away.

KAKAR HOUSE OF DESIGN One look at the portfolio of interior designer Anil Kakar spurs a few questions. Where does he find this gorgeous stuff? How involved are his clients, given how unique his work is from project to project? What, if any, are his signature design moves? Kakar could answer it all with a single word: balance. He balances a design firm with a furnishings and accessories storefront, which allows him to pour extra time, energy and resources—like a dedicated staff—into sourcing. He balances a belief that success is dependent on the client’s satisfaction with a passionate desire to engage his own vision. He balances an approach focused on customization with a love for color, patterns, textures and layering. And he balances a bespoke, intimate view of design with an understanding of the opportunities found in technology, embracing the efficiency and connection it provides. The results harmonize it all, and they speak for themselves. It’s a good thing, because Kakar and his team hardly have the time to explain them. Whether they’re drafting whole-home interior plans, trekking through hidden shops around the globe or crafting custom furnishings through their Miami location, inspiration and creation occupy their time.

Ask the Expert Tell me about the project that put your company on the map. It was a Miami Beach Mediterranean villa, built in the 1930s. It needed a gut renovation, and we restored it to its full glory before spending years decorating it with one-of-a-kind pieces, a mix of antique and new. The transformation was magical. It resonated with everyone who saw it. We kept the charm and history of the property but updated it into a luxurious marvel of modern-day living. Name influences and inspirations that inform your work. Mother Nature and my travels are huge sources of inspiration. Tony Duquette and his idea that home decor should be like theater—over the top; more is more—have influenced me greatly.

MIRIAM MOORE DESIGN STUDIO In 2002, Miriam Moore took on a paramount project: a 16,000-square-foot Coral Gables estate, which rests on a property that was christened “Casa Arboles” in honor of its 80 centennial oak trees. Such an impressive residence called for an uncommon design, and in fact, the results would come to inform and define the work of Miriam Moore Design Studio for years to come. “The clients wanted to incorporate their family history, treasured furnishings, a private contemporary art collection and old-world elements,” Moore shares. “The spatial layouts needed to accommodate a ballroom and many conversation areas, as the homeowners are nationally known businesspeople and philanthropists who host charitable and political events.” Quite the challenge, altogether. But Moore’s completed design met every need and desire, and inspired a realization that she has a passion for a more comprehensive approach to interiors. Since that first major project, Moore and her team have become known for their ability to accomplish the interior architecture, spatial planning and decorating all in one endeavor. Among her influences, Moore points to Italian order and symmetry, industry legends the likes of Philip Johnson and Zaha Hadid, and the clients themselves, with whom she pursues, as she calls it, “a meeting of the minds.”

Ask the Expert What style is your firm most known for? I favor classical contemporary environments that are simplistically sophisticated and timeless, yet functional. There is always a formality to the spaces I create, and proportion is key. I am an advocate for everything natural and organic; faux anything is a no-no for me. Overall, quality of materials and finishes is important. As the saying goes, ‘Style is not expensive, but quality is.’

Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? This is a tough question to answer, as I am very selective about the projects I accept. Thus, in terms of both clients and scope, almost all of them (even the most challenging) have been enriching and rewarding.

hen interior designer Phyllis Taylor and architect Maria Rignack found themselves renovating a Key Largo condo with sharp angles and a challenging floor plan, the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi seemed an apt envelope for the project. Derived from Buddhist teachings, the school of thought embraces imperfections and celebrates nature— tenets that have shaped interiors and architecture alike. Taylor and Rignack’s clients, a prominent Midwestern family, had previously worked with their firm on a Palm Beach-style vacation home in the same resort community. But as the years went on, the family found they needed more space to accommodate an ever-expanding brood. With no acreage to build a guest cottage, the couple jumped at the opportunity to purchase in a new development just a quick golf cart ride away, enlisting the duo to smarten the existing architectural interiors and devise a tasteful, low-maintenance design scheme. Bringing in natural light was the first priority. The unit was inwardly situated, plunging the entry and hallway into darkness. “Florida sun is our greatest natural resource,” Taylor says. “The quality of that light and how it reacts to color and gives us shadowing is what we count on to make our interiors successful.” So, as a first order of business, frosted-glass doors were added to the bedrooms off the entryway, filtering in soft outdoor light while still maintaining privacy. Next, organic materials were employed to camouflage the hallway’s door procession. “Essentially we were given white walls, many utilitarian doors and an odd point,” Rignack explains of the corridor. “We decided the best way to address this was to conceal the doors as much as possible.” General contractor James Gregory

and builder Miles Zamora clad the hall in a grainy milpa wood on one side and full-height white marble reliefs on the other. “The selections and applications of colors helped,” Gregory says. “They’re all the primarily neutral, natural tones. The natural light now bounces throughout the condo, and it’s very soft and comforting.” In tandem, the surfaces bring impactful texture to the space, which the team highlighted further with sleek sconces that simultaneously call attention to door openings. At the end of the hall, where the walls converge in that aforementioned point, Rignack carved in as much as the abutting plumbing would allow her, transforming the corner into a chic gallery niche-cum-focal feature. The unit’s bones proved challenging for the clients as well, having long-favored classic interiors. “We couldn’t throw a traditional style into a modern layout—the space just didn’t lend itself to that,” Taylor explains. “The difficult thing was convincing the owners their sensibilities would still shine through—that the design would be an updated interpretation of what’s important to them and how they like to live.” Entrusting their fruitful long-term relationship, the couple took a leap and embraced Taylor’s contemporary “Zen with zing” vision. To incorporate the wife’s favorite color—“blue, blue and more blue,” the interior designer describes—antique indigo textiles from Japan were introduced as a jumpingoff point. Throughout each room, indigo fragments are sewn into throw pillows, framed as wall art and gracefully draped across furnishings, establishing a color narrative that carries across the hallway rug and powder bath detailing. Japanese references continue with details like the glass and rope pendants in the kitchen, inspired by the culture’s rope and knot art, and in the use of woven textures throughout, such as a living area armchair that nods to traditional basket weaving. Beyond these nuances, a reverence for fine craftsmanship and earthy forms permeates the space, from the intricate built-ins in the master bedroom to the bespoke surface of the indoor dining table: a slab of bleached wood Taylor had cast in white acrylic. Bringing the wabi-sabi ethos full circle, the outdoor living space is undoubtedly the unit’s most enjoyed feature. Accessible via a wall of retractable glass doors, the expansive terrace flows into the airy interiors, blurring the lines between inside and outside. “The owners enjoy the Florida air and live more in that outside room than in the conventional interior spaces,” Taylor says. In a happy surprise to both client and design team, the new apartment has drawn unexpected visitors to the family’s beloved vacation destination: the owners themselves. “They thought that this was going to be a house for guests,” Taylor says. “But as it turns out, they’re the guests.”

eborah Houston first met Anna Polk some 20 years ago while vacationing in Jamaica. Both mothers of young children at the time, the two quickly bonded and got together whenever plans allowed. This included more overseas adventures, as Houston joined Anna on travels with her husband, Louis, better known as “Bo.” Coming full circle, it’s fitting the friends’ first collaboration as designer and client would be in another tropical locale: Palm Beach. Deciding to split their time between New York and South Florida, the Polks had considered several move-in-ready homes in the town but ultimately purchased a residence that required a renovation, allowing them to adjust it for their lifestyle. “We liked the cozy feel of the property and the size of the house,” Anna says. “The actual house was not my style, but I had a vision of what it could be with a lot of work.” For help, naturally, they turned to Houston. As a blank slate, the Polks’ new home needed plenty of vision to personalize it. “We had to make the spaces flow, be functional and not feel cavernous,” Houston says. “My job was to create a sanctuary that was calming and elegant, yet casual in nature.” To do so, she teamed up with residential designer Michael Perry, general contractor Tim Givens and landscape designer Keith Williams. While the traditional Palm Beach-style aesthetic on the façade remains intact, everything else has been thoroughly reimagined to yield fluid connections between inside and outside. As a first impression, “it was a terrific little house that could be saved,” Perry says. “The bones were great, and its scale on the property fit perfectly. It gave us the opportunity to bring the landscape inside.” One such key move involved relocating the entrance, creating a direct line of sight from the front door to the garden beyond—something the previous entry lacked. Williams worked magic at the newly conceived front by incorporating raised planter walls and

LX_MIA30_HOM_Houston_PB30pickup_10.indd 224
placing espaliered jasmine and gardenia near the door for a fragrant welcome. “We wanted the house to feel slightly elevated from the street, giving it more of a dominant presence,” the landscape designer says. Like the entrance, Perry reworked all the spaces within so every axis leads directly to the outside. He also relocated the dining area and kitchen for a better flow. Off the master bedroom, the residential designer centered the pool, one of the show-stopping elements on the property (a must, given Bo is an avid swimmer). “The clients wanted something special,” Williams says, “so the pool water is at the same level as the paving. We also tiled it with blue glass, so it looks like it almost disappears.” For Houston’s part, she was driven by ambience, taking to heart Anna’s request for “calm, beachy, Zen spaces where we could come down and be hermits.” The designer began as she always does: with the interior architecture, detailing spaces before any furniture was even conceived. “I had the most fun doing the millwork,” she says. “It was where I wanted to bring in the details.” In the living area, Houston set the tone with a tray ceiling paneled with wood stained a driftwood tone. The feature complements the fireplace, made of stone shot through with gray, cream and taupe shades. “The stone was an elegant piece that pulled the look together,” she says. “I had seen a slab of it and thought there was something very calming about it.” Another paneled ceiling appears in the kitchen, its crisp white hue harmonizing with the cabinetry. The ingenious island, meanwhile, contains a generous banquette that faces the garden’s dining area, all the better for fostering those important indoor-outdoor connections. Selecting and designing the rest of the details inside, “my intent was to keep things beautifully layered,” Houston says. “Anna has beautiful objects, and they are all displayed in layered ways.” She hewed close to a neutral palette and wove in textural elements, choosing linens for upholstery and jute for carpets. The furnishings themselves are simple and understated, and many are of Houston’s own design, like the master bedroom’s streamlined nightstands and bed. “It wasn’t about the pieces but the overall effect,” she explains. Lighting was the one spot where the designer opted for a few statement items. She hung a collection of wood pendants in the living area and, shining above a center table in the entry, displayed a sculptural fixture that consists of handcrafted bronze leaves. As testament to a job well done, “Bo will occasionally call to tell me how much he loves the house,” Houston reports. And, while she and her clients’ two-decade friendship might have been the foundation for the project, the designer gained more meaningful connections as a result. “Michael and the rest of the team were so collaborative,” she says. “We shared ideas and became good friends. It was a great experience because of that.”

“I’M INTERESTED IN SCIENTISTS WHO HAVE GRAND UNIFICATION THEORIES, BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE THEY SHARE THE SAME SPACE AS ARTISTS.”
F
or a fleeting moment in summer 2017, space and time stopped for artist Carol Prusa. Standing on the banks of Nebraska’s Platte River, she had her sights set skyward to watch the total solar eclipse, the first in a century visible across North America. When the moon fully engulfed the sun in a perfect black disc, “the landscape became so otherworldly, with the colors of dawn on my left and complete darkness on my right,” Prusa recalls. “When Venus popped out, I just lost my grounding.” For the South Florida artist, witnessing this celestial realm captured an experience she’d been chasing for decades in her silverpoint drawings. Probing the mystical order of space, Prusa creates ethereal, geometric mandalas in shimmering lunar grays and deep-space blacks. These forms undulate across wood panels and drift along massive Plexiglas domes and moon-like spheres. Cosmic curiosity came naturally for the native Chicagoan, a former science student who turned to art after a life-shifting undergraduate drawing class at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. To ground her work, Prusa still studies theories by astronomers and theoretical physicists, from dark matter to parallel universes. “I’m interested in scientists who have grand unification theories, because that’s where they share the same space as artists—right at the threshold between knowing something and not knowing,” she explains. Prusa balances the known and unknown throughout her process, starting with her signature medium, silverpoint—the silver-tipped drawing tool favored by Renaissance artists like the astronomically inquisitive Leonardo da Vinci. She became enthralled early on with the technique’s precision
LX_MIA30_SM_Prusa_PB30pickup_4.indd 235
and permanence. “Silverpoint isn’t fugitive,” Prusa explains. “It won’t smear or fade. Plus it’s alchemical, so I can tarnish it toward certain hues.” Whether drawing on flat wood or rounded Plexiglas, Prusa dissects these gessoed surfaces in silverpoint based on geometries like the golden ratio (a pattern repeated across existence, from seashells to galaxy spirals). Over these precise lines, she draws swirling nebulous forms that feel “part biological and part stardust clouds.” The artist then obscures this meticulous linework by pouring graphite and pigment washes speckled with shimmering metal fragments. She redefines these eclipsed outlines in titanium white and, to infuse more luminosity, applies aluminum leaf or installs optical fibers to create pinpricks of light. After the eclipse, Prusa’s work dived deeper into black for her recent show, “Dark Light,” on display at the Boca Raton Museum of Art through January 19. The project became “a way to come to terms with what unsettled me so,” she says. With an exhibit at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens scheduled for the fall, her new works will also explore dark energy—the mysterious force behind the expanding universe. Embracing this void, even in graphite, may prove daunting for many. But for Prusa, “I believe now more than ever that everything is connected,” she says. “We’re all tethered to the singularity of the Big Bang. We’re born of stardust.”

bathroom table in the shape of a life-size sheep could be considered an unusual design choice—but designers James and Miriam Duncan knew it was exactly the kind of lighthearted eccentricity their clients wanted in their Key Largo vacation home. The owners, whose primary residence is in Canada, happily gave the husband-and-wife team complete creative freedom for the project. But there was a caveat: The result couldn’t be too precious. The Duncans could do whatever they wanted, so long as it was fresh, fun and a home that could be lived in. Although the unit in the Ocean Reef Club didn’t require many structural changes, it was lacking a certain character. “We needed to give it a little bit of personality,” James Duncan says. “It had a lot of drywall and porcelain, so we wanted to warm it up and make it friendly.” To add visual depth to the condo, general contractor Fabio Cisternino crafted wood moldings and customized natural wood shiplap for parts of the dwelling, such as the living area and hallways. “We tried to make it really fresh,” he says. “I like the combination of nice furniture and finishes with more rustic details. It’s sophisticated but also has warmth.” The change established a backdrop for just the atmosphere the owners desired. “Being a vacation home, they wanted it to feel more casual,” Miriam Duncan says. “They want to be able to walk in with the sand on their feet and not worry about anything.” This meant choosing furniture and fabrics that resist the carefree holiday antics of the family’s several generations. “The clients have grandchildren, so we were looking for bulletproof finishes,”
“YOU DON’T WANT A DESIGN TO LOOK LIKE A SHOWROOM—IT SHOULD FEEL LIKE A COLLECTED STORY.” –JAMES DUNCAN

James Duncan says. To that end, the designers’ use of vinyl wallpaper in hallways as well as outdoor fabrics and rugs throughout mean the apartment is easy to clean up after a festive gathering. “The owners aren’t trying to impress people; they’re just trying to have a good time,” James Duncan says. “You don’t want a design to look straight out of the showroom—it should feel like a life, a collected story.” Of course, a good vacation home is one that also conveys a sense of wanderlust. For that, the Duncans dug into their own collection of curios they have amassed from extensive global journeys, having dedicated two months a year to traveling. One hall displays wooden tribal masks from Mali and a sculpture from Papua New Guinea, the dining area has a console table from Vietnam, and the living area is furnished with antique chairs from Prague and smokestacks, once part of an old French ship, transformed into lights. “Good interiors are a bit of storytelling,” James Duncan says. “With our spaces, we try to make it feel like this is a home, a collection of experiences.” Amid the international mix of findings, the Duncans made sure to also incorporate a local sense of place. In the bedrooms, they incorporated board and batten walls as a tribute to a signature building exterior in the Keys. And unsurprisingly, there are plenty of references to the ocean, from a custom gold chrome surfboard in a bedroom to a driftwood console in a hallway and beachy fabrics throughout. Combined, the rustic, organic textures add an extra touch of soul, with just the right patina to look as though they’ve been lovingly weathered over the years by salty sea breezes. The coastal vibe is deepened through the unit’s striking artworks. A dreamy abstract in soothing blues and grays sits above a weathered wooden bench in a hall, while largescale photographs capture nautical vignettes: a majestic tricolor spinnaker blooming from a sailboat in a corridor; a seabird folding its elegant neck into its plumage in a hallway; a solitary white lifeguard stand surveying the azure waters in the master bathroom. As for the sheep, Miriam Duncan says it is a testament to the homeowners’ easygoing spirit—and trust in the designers’ creative direction. “When you suggest a client have a sheep in their master bathroom to hold their soap, a lot of people would be very hesitant,” she laughs. “But if you have the freedom to just do it, then it’s a nice surprise and it’s playful.” It’s exactly those design details with a twist that imbue the waterfront property with the kind of laid-back, cheerful vibe inherent to a good beachside getaway. “It feels very light and bright,” Miriam Duncan says. “You just want to be happy there.”

In the back hall of a Key Largo condo, husband-and-wife designers James and Miriam Duncan curated a largescale bird photograph above a James Duncan Collection Paris console from Ammon Hickson. Fab Interior & Exterior crafted an inset wall of glossy white wood shiplap surrounded by a Phillip Jeffries vinyl grass-cloth wallcovering from Holly Hunt.

Right: The living area’s vintage chairs from Prague pair with a velvet Bottega Veneta sofa—topped with Mexican mud cloth pillows—on a Jaipur rug. “We chose this rug because it has a waterlike vibe,” James Duncan says. The designers transformed smokestacks from a Parisian flea market into lamps. Opposite: First seen when entering the home, a corridor displays a custom driftwood console holding a sculpture from Papua New Guinea. A bone and glass Made Goods mirror joins tribal masks from Mali on the wall. A navy jute rug rests on the floor.

Above: The master bathroom received a minor refresh. “We found and repainted the sheep table, a lighthearted bit of fun—perfect for a candle and a glass or two of wine,” James Duncan says. The duo painted the walls Benjamin Moore Distant Gray and hung a Steve Schlackman photograph for interest. Left: The designers sourced a guest bedroom chandelier from Bali and covered a surfboard with gold chrome for a unique decor element. Flanking the custom bed, Made Goods nightstands hold stone lamps. The artwork displayed against the shiplap wall was purchased during a Duncan family trip to Borneo. “The wall treatment gives the room a cottage vibe,” James Duncan says.
