hape. Color. Texture. Do you want a designer to curate your space, or create your space? There’s a difference. He’s Dwayne Bergmann.
Dwayne strives to know more than your taste but the psychology of your taste, what you like and why you like it. He learns what elevates you, so you can live in that place. Dwayne and his team are sought out for how they balance contradictions. Subtle and dramatic. Sophisticated and simple. Luxe and livable. Their creations have made the Dwayne Bergmann name synonymous with design. Like abstract art, Dwayne does not replicate the external, but his work moves the lines inside of you. He will find what stirs you and he will design it with abandon. His undertones are clear: You can get what you want.

ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”

⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”
LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 26
Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Palm Beach | amyhermaninteriors.com
Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

True COLORS WITH NATURE AS HIS MUSE, MISH TWORKOWSKI APPLIES A GOLDEN TOUCH TO HIS ICONIC JEWELRY DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KYLE KNODELL

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND
W
ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 34
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 36
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

THIS TRIO OF RESTAURANTS ARE AS PLEASING TO THE EYE AS THEIR CUISINES ARE TO THE PALATE.
D’AMICO’S THE CONTINENTAL Three distinct environments comprise this American steakhouse: the purpleaccented “bull room”; the playful, Moulin Rouge-inspired main dining room; and an exterior courtyard with bougainvilleacovered trellises and white cabanas. Architect David Poorman conceived a space with a color palette drawn from Etro fabrics, art influenced by the work of Christian Lacroix, and outdoor spaces reminiscent of hotel patios created by Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders. Inside, materials were sourced from all over Europe, including glassware from France, flatware from Italy and lighting pendants from Spain. A fire-engine red exhibition cooking grill adds an element of whimsy not often found in such a swanky spot. damicoscontinental.com
TALKING SHOP
For Barbatella in Naples, GrizForm Design Architects conceptualized a rustic dining room with wood tables, brick floors and terrazzo counters, and a gorgeous adjacent bar featuring a ceiling and walls awash with 1,400 vivid green plaster medallions. Stone Source terrazzo tiles, Lee Jofa fabriccovered booths and RH birdcage light fixtures come together and bear out the designers’ description of the dual space as “reunited sisters who have lived separate lives,” with the dining side characterized as homey, warm and “a little rough around the edges” and the bar side—with its Enomatic wine-serving technology and copper bar—representing the sophisticated big-city girl. barbatellanaples.com
SUMMER + COMPANY
Mother-and-daughter team Tracey and Mandi Rapisardi each bring something special to the table—literally and figuratively— at their Sarasota-based, coastal decor-themed store Summer + Company. An interior designer for 35 years, Tracey is also an author: Her book, Simply by the Sea, published in April 2019, covers seven different homes she’s designed from Maine to Florida. Daughter Mandi—who earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design and production and minored in textiles—designs much of the bedding, pillows, fabrics and other soft items the duo produce, in addition to throws, wall decor, private-label upholstery and furniture. summerandcompanyhome.com What do you consider hallmarks of the coastal lifestyle? To me, coastal living is more on the carefree side—specifically, surrounding yourself with the relaxing and effortless colors of nature, having family and friends at gatherings and enjoying the sun, sand and sea with wonderful food and drinks. Tell us about your inventory. Much of it is designed and made in-house. Other inventory has to hit a certain criteria in order for us to carry it—it must, hands down, be high quality. We source beautiful custom Belgian linens, Irish wools and custom pottery. There are vintage items as well, from a wooden glass-door pie cupboard to McCoy vases, silver candlesticks and one-of-a-kind dishes. We only carry things we are proud to sell. And the general vibe? We don’t just cater to the “beach” vibe, but also modern, cottage, farmhouse, traditional, bohemian, vintage, classic, eclectic and casual. We strive to offer unique items and products. No one wants the same thing as everyone else! 040 / luxesource.com

SEA SALT Like so many Gulf Coast spaces both residential and commercial, Sea Salt Naples invites guests into an interior— designed by GrizForm Design Architects— with an “ocean sunset in mind”: Think warm tones of weathered wood balanced by a palette reminiscent of sea glass. The seaside theme works in sync with a menu heavy on fresh seafood, from an elevated version of fish and chips with avocadocilantro cream to artfully presented whole branzino from Spain. The bar area spills onto a covered patio with wicker dining chairs and white linen-covered tables surrounded by planters of lush greenery, catering to the indoor-outdoor lifestyle Neapolitans seek both in their homes and in the dining establishments they frequent. seasaltnaples.com

MEET the MAKER ROBIN JOY RIGGSBEE
Robin Joy Riggsbee was born into an artistic family: Her mother performed musical comedy and her father sang opera at Jordan Hall in Boston. “I grew up going to concerts, galleries and museums,” Riggsbee fondly recalls. Today, the founder of beJOYed, her brand of retail products, has seen her tiny illustrations translated to everything from scarves and T-shirts to books. The artist defected from New York to Naples seven years ago in search of warmer climes and a fresh art scene; now, her work can be seen at Elizabeth Jules Gallery and Naples Art Association. Luxe chatted with her about her creative path. robinjoy.com Once you discovered your affinity for miniatures, how did you translate it to your profession? When I visited Taipei in the mid-1990s and saw the miniature work in the National Palace Museum, it put me in tears. At the time, I was living in Hong Kong; I would draw these tiny characters and patterns, and from that I developed this whole world. It began a journey of obsessive creating for the next 25 years, working day and night. Tell us about your New York gallery and some of your most exciting experiences there. I was fortunate to have had a gallery and showroom in the West Village. Donna Karan’s and Diane von Furstenberg’s
designers all came in. Doing the Christmas and Valentine’s Day windows for Bo Concept on 18th Street, a major lobby installation in Chelsea and other private installation work and gallery exhibits took my miniature work to a large-scale platform that worked really well. And my solo exhibit at the Musée de la Toile de Jouy in Paris was a dream come true. What’s on the horizon? I have a weekend show January 17 and 18 at Art Edge Gallery in Naples and am working on a collaboration with John Carroll Long, owner of UP Art and Design Gallery in Naples, to show our work at his space sometime this winter.
DESIGN MINDED
“An astutely proportioned container of all things creative, the Naples Academy of Ballet designed by Architects Unlimited differentiates architecture from mere building. The minimalist interior may harken to a clean, factory aesthetic, but the precise detailing, inventive use of metal panels and mesh, and even the touch of brilliant color at critical points transform the utilitarian into the lyrical.”
“The main lobby of the Ritz-Carlton is the Grand Central Station of Naples: Its neoclassical space bustles with activity and yet is a passage to the privacy of one’s room. The furniture arrangements create both intimate and public areas, making the multipurpose lobby an elegant living room as well. If a hotel can be a home away from home, this space shows what great design— especially interior design—can accomplish.”
“Sails Restaurant, on Fifth Avenue South, is a brilliant example of design excellence in a commercial setting. The modern Calacatta marble bar paired with the traditional millwork exudes timeless European elegance. The juxtaposition of these two styles creates an effortlessly chic atmosphere. Also, the Legno Bastone wide-plank wood flooring installed on a diagonal is a perfect example of how every detail matters.”

CHECK IN BELLEVIEW INN
The first hotel built on Florida’s West Coast, the Belleview Biltmore Hotel, has been restored and reimagined as the Belleview Inn. Built in 1897 by Henry Plant, the iconic four-story landmark hosted every living president until it closed in 2009. JMC Communities preserved its most authentic 120-year-old features—among them, the grand staircase in the lobby and the fireplaces—while incorporating a resort-style pool and sundeck and a fully outfitted fitness center. Additional charms include the Tiffany Room, so called for its Tiffany glass panels from the original building; Mort’s Reading Room—named after Plant’s son—stocked with displays and historical information about the establishment’s legacy; and Maisie’s Marketplace, namesake of Mort’s wife, serving up breakfast and small plates. thebelleviewinn.com
FIRST LOOK NORMAN LOVE
ON VIEW “ZODIAC LEGO”
Having debuted in Los Angeles in 2017, Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei’s “Zodiac LEGO” portrait series is now on view at The Ringling through February 2. Ever since his creation in 2010 of “The Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads,” Weiwei had been working on another version of the zodiac animals; he finally settled on these vividly hued works. Comprised entirely of tiny Legos, they depict the 12 traditional Chinese zodiac animal heads based on those that adorned a fountain in the gardens of the Yuanming Yuan in the 18th century, with select scenes from Weiwei’s “Study of Perspective” series of photographs used in the background. Weiwei believes the subject matter “is something everyone can have some understanding of, including children and people who are not in the art world.” ringling.org first look photos: courtesy gti designs. check in photo: courtesy belleview inn. on view photo: courtesy the ringling museum.
Many shopping centers house salons and many house theaters, but you’d be hard-pressed to find one that contains a combination chocolate salon and theater—until this spring, that is. That’s when Norman Love Confections is opening the doors to its sixth Chocolate Salon in Florida at University Town Center in Sarasota. Developed by designbuild firm GTI Designs, which specializes in food services and retail projects, the 2,000square-foot space will display the famous chocolatier’s jewel-like confections—along with baked desserts, sweet and savory crepes, coffee and artisanal gelato. Modern touches like industrial-style lighting and exposed ductwork play off warm brown wood tones and Norman Love Confections’ signature green hue. The new location will also proffer a selection of wines and feature top-counter seating that places guests at front and center of an interactive dessert experience in which they’ll have the chance to engage and converse with pastry chefs as they create “desserts of art.” normanloveconfections.com 044 / luxesource.com

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING

Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

ARCHITECTS
SMITH AND MOORE ARCHITECTS The team at Smith and Moore Architects employs a holistic approach to their work. “We always begin with an understanding of architectural traditions, contextual relationships and the seamless integration of indoors and out, which is critical,” says principal Daniel Kahan, who leads the firm alongside Peter Papadopoulos, Harold Smith and Jonathan Moore. “Working in close collaboration with landscape and interior designers, we create projects with a sense of place and permanence.” As for the style of architecture they most frequently work in … there isn’t one. “Our designs range vastly, from ornately wrought classical to highly distilled modernism,” Kahan explains. “Ultimately, our favorite project is any that allows us to dive into the minutiae and craft of our work.” The relationship with the client, too, is a fulfilling aspect for everyone at Smith and Moore. Kahan and the team encourage openness and honesty, endeavoring to understand how the homeowner truly lives, moment to moment. And that isn’t all they pay attention to. “Our clients possess exceptional minds that bring perspective to our designs,” Kahan says. “One of our greatest challenges and rewards is always to figure out how we can channel that brilliance into the home we are creating for them.”

What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? We employ traditional methods of design, such as drawing by hand and making physical models, while also embracing cutting-edge technology. We consistently use threedimensional modeling and printing to help our clients fully understand our proposed solutions. Share your influences and inspirations. Our work is broadly influenced by the world around us, particularly in the areas of art, architecture and science. Much of the basis for our work comes from the study of classical traditions in architecture and interpretations of them by our modern forebears.

KROME CONSTRUCTION To say that Krome Construction’s growth has been impressive is an understatement. Just two years ago, Jason Elmer and Jordan Gruber were responsible for every aspect of their business, from in-house operations to the management of each project the firm took on. But today, Krome has 18 employees contributing to work that has already been published and acclaimed by other pros in the industry. The recipe for such success? “Our approach has been about being detail- and client-oriented, while inspiring our staff to do so as well,” Elmer says. “We know how important it is to treat our employees well and celebrate their successes. We want them to be a family, and we think this leads to a team that really connects with and takes care of our clients.” And that they do; the referrals prove it. Most of Krome’s projects, which have spanned South Florida from Fort Lauderdale to South of Fifth and Coconut Grove, have come via word of mouth. “Our goal is to bring the client’s ideas and concepts to life while maintaining a structure of schedule and budget,” Gruber says. “We pride ourselves on proposing solutions and not shying away from challenges. At this point, we want to continue with our initial formula: be honest, deliver top-notch service and strive to be the best-quality builder there is.” Sounds like a plan.

Ask the Expert How can the client work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Without a doubt, the most successful projects happen when the client brings us on at the beginning. We have very close relationships with award-winning architects and designers, and when we are a part of the design phase, we can contribute money-saving methods and valuable engineering insight.

What’s next for the firm? We are currently working on a 10,000-square-foot renovation in Key Biscayne, in which the owners are incorporating incredibly unique pieces, artifacts and styles from their travels. The majority of our work consists of condominiums and home renovations/additions, but we have completed a few, very significant single-family residences from the ground up. We look forward to focusing on that as a future segment of our portfolio.

BBH DESIGN STUDIO With years of experience in both the U.S. and Venezuela, the directors behind BBH Design Studio boast a diverse portfolio. Although their background is primarily architectural, Debbie Flicki, Hani Flicki and Sete Bassan have worked to master the art of design-build projects, providing interior design, decorating and construction services as well. Respecting the needs, desires and budgets of their clients, the trio strives to create spaces that speak to their unique inhabitants. “We have been extremely fortunate to have the best clients, who come from all corners of the earth,” they say. “They are highly educated, successful professionals and entrepreneurs who appreciate art. To them, luxury is about freedom, space, light, the pleasure of living and the money to experience it all.” It comes as little surprise, then, to learn of the team’s process, which relies on an integration of surroundings and the owner’s personality. “We try to enhance interior environments by using natural light and colors to build flow,” they say. “Contemporary architecture, dramatic contrasts, textures and the incorporation of exotic materials define our work, but the client’s preferences are continually consulted. A successful project is one in which both client and creator are satisfied with the final product.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com
The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

nce Lynn and Craig Westbay began vacationing in Naples 17 years ago, there was no way the St. Louis-based husband and wife could establish their retirement home anywhere else. At least, that’s what their two daughters told them when the couple prepared to leave their Midwestern home for good. “The girls did not want us to move anywhere but Naples,” Lynn explains. “We had rituals here, from sunset beach gatherings to Christmas traditions, after all.” The couple found an ideal homesite within walking distance of the beach and shopping district; the 37-year-old house occupying it, however, held far less appeal. “It was not built to withstand hurricanes; it had no charm,” Lynn says. In other words, it had to go, and the Westbays found themselves with an opportunity to build something completely different from anything else in the neighborhood. “Craig and Lynn wanted the architecture and landscape to be tropical,” recalls their architect, John Cooney. “This is a home they wanted to relax in; they wanted it to feel like a private resort.” To evoke that vacation vibe, Cooney took cues from the British West Indies style of architecture. On the home’s front façade, a covered porch and secondfloor balcony draw the eye up toward traditional corbels and brackets that support deep roof overhangs. Sea green shutters frame tall, narrow windows, a period detail that hints at the high-ceilinged rooms behind them. That, however, is where the exterior’s adherence to tropical tradition ends. A formal entry courtyard by landscape architect Koby Kirwin—delineated by salvaged Chicago bricks and punctuated by a tiered fountain—nods to the Westbays’ love for New Orleans and Charleston’s gracious historic homes. And at the back of the house, which Cooney designed to embrace a lanai and pool, broad window walls capitalize on lush backyard views and abundant natural light.
“THIS IS A HOME THE CLIENTS WANTED TO RELAX IN; THEY WANTED IT TO FEEL LIKE A PRIVATE RESORT.” –JOHN COONEY
LX_NAP03_HOM_Ficarra_12.indd 138
As a result, there’s not a dark space in the house. An open floor plan and high-contrast palette of dark hickory floors and light walls add to the airy vibe. To ensure that the rooms would feel intimate when the couple was home alone, Cooney and interior designer Molly Grup had builder Chris van Emmerik delineate each one with a unique ceiling detail. In the living room, painted tongueand-groove planks pay tribute to British West Indies architecture. For the adjacent kitchen and dining area, the design team specified long, painted beams. And in both spaces, crown molding adds a more contemporary touch. “I wanted the detail that millwork and moldings bring to the table, but it’s not too ornate,” Cooney says. “I didn’t want a lot of fussy details on this house.” Van Emmerik’s team emphasized the clean aesthetic with more thoughtful touches. “In the kitchen, the countertops extend straight back to the windowpanes, creating a seamless expanse,” van Emmerik says. “On the corners of the backsplash above the range, we mitered the subway tile and ran it back to the windows as well; there’s no wood trim. And throughout the house, we installed the wood flooring first and the baseboards on top, eliminating the need for shoe moldings.” Such simplicity ensures that all eyes remain on the homeowners’ diverse collection of furnishings and artwork— some family heirlooms, some estate-sale and consignmentstore finds, and many souvenirs from world travels, including antiques from Italy, artwork from Cuba, and blue-and-white china from Japan. To marry those pieces with a variety of new furnishings, Lynn leaned on Grup, who was energized by the couple’s outside-the-box style. “The typical Naples look is more contemporary,” the designer says. “Bringing in these antique pieces is something that not everyone is doing right now.” But Grup did it with aplomb—aided by the architecture’s nods to Southern style. “I think homes of the South have so much history that it’s comfortable to put a brand-new skirted sofa next to an old drop-leaf end table,” she says, referring to the living room furnishings. “The key is having enough old to balance the new, and choosing new things with a softness to them so the antiques feel at home.” Pops of color and pattern add to the eclectic vibe. A vibrant ikat fabric on the living room sofa pillows provided a palette of blues and greens that makes appearances in every room: In the master bedroom, periwinkle blue brightens the rug, bed pillows and a Lucite-legged bench. In the den, a kelly green cocktail table complements drapery depicting exotic birds in rich jewel tones. And on the powder room’s showstopping wallcovering, colorful waterfowl cavort amidst blue and yellow flowers on jadegreen waters. “I told Molly that her job was to help me make the house timeless and curated and to push me to take risks in design that I wouldn’t do on my own,” Lynn says. “I wanted it to be a colorful, happy house, and she made it come alive.”
12/3/19 11:44 AM
Interior designer Molly Grup furnished the kitchen-adjacent sitting area with a pair of armchairs and an ottoman from Hickory Chair, creating an inviting spot for enjoying morning coffee. A blue-striped wool rug from Couristan, accent pillows in a grass green Rogers & Goffigon linen, and the ottoman’s leather top emphasize the home’s fresh palette of blue and green hues.

Many of the homeowners’ treasured objects hew to a palette of blues, greens and yellows, which Grup incorporated into the dining room and kitchen furnishings. To accent two of the Vanguard Furniture chairs that surround a Chaddock dining table, she chose Quadrille’s navy ikat Nomad fabric. The kitchen counter stools are covered in a bold green Rogers & Goffigon linen.

henever Mike McKeon called his parents in Southern California from New York City, they would brag about their endless days of sunshine. It wasn’t until five years ago, when he rented a friend’s beach condo in Naples, that Mike realized his mom and dad might be onto something. “It was January and every day was 80 degrees and clear blue sky,” he recalls. That was enough to convince him to make the city his primary residence—and it didn’t hurt that he got to one-up his parents. “Now I’ve got that sunshine in Florida,” he recalls telling them. “But everything’s green around here as opposed to brown.” Though he first settled for a condo on the beach, Mike soon decided he needed more space and set his sights on a block of land in Old Naples. While perusing other houses in the neighborhood for inspiration, the work of architect Jeff Harrell caught his attention. Among the many things Mike and Harrell saw eye-to-eye on, one stood out: symmetry. “The house is highly symmetrical, which is a trait of many classic houses,” Harrell explains. While Mike favored a classic Old Naples design, he also wanted the home to feel contemporary. Much of that came from Harrell’s creative vision, brought to life by builder Ron Davidson, who says the intricate touches are what make the design work. “With the level of detail, including exterior corbels and elaborate interior trim, we were able to combine features to create a modern yet traditional look that is timeless,” he says. Mike and Harrell were both also passionate about prioritizing sunshine. “Natural light always dominates everything we do,” Harrell explains. “Our goal is that the house doesn’t require lights on anytime during the day.” He and his team installed floor-to-ceiling windows throughout, as well as a skylight over the staircase. In the bathrooms and laundry room, they used bottom-up shades that allow light to come in while still providing privacy.
“OUR GOAL IS THAT THE HOUSE DOESN’T REQUIRE LIGHTS ON ANYTIME DURING THE DAY.” –JEFF HARRELL
LX_NAP03_HOM_Freestyle_14.indd 150
Most importantly, the homeowner didn’t want a stark white spec house. As such, designer Paula Myette, working with interior designer Faith Fix, opted for a soothing neutral palette with a twist, combining warm whites, grayish greens and shades of blue. “While the home is quite spacious, the rooms are very humanscaled, so it’s easier to make a room feel inviting,” Myette says. “What’s important to me as I’m putting together the interiors, especially when using a light color palette, is having a variety of textures.” A softpatterned wool carpet and an ivory chenille sectional in the living room and smooth sateen duvets in the bedrooms help to create a comfortable space, while combinations of wood, leather, metal, linen and glass provide visual interest. “It all adds depth and richness.” In the “hers” master bath, a double slipper tub, floraand-fauna-print wallpaper and crystal details create a more traditional milieu. But Mike says the goal was to create a personal sanctuary for the lady of the house, even if it leaned a little less contemporary than the rest of the design. “I asked a lot of happily married people if they use the same bathroom as their spouse and almost everyone said no,” he laughs. A steady flow of guests escaping the Northeast chill meant that welcoming alfresco spaces were essential. The homeowner envisioned a series of outdoor rooms that connected with the house, including a breezy lanai with a fireplace. An odd zoning issue that arose from the house being on two alleys meant that the garage doors had to be accessed from the back of the house. This forced the design team to think creatively when planning the rear courtyard, which features a putting green, a pond-style pool and a garden. In order to provide a view corridor directly in line with the great room, the team decided to split the three-car garage, using the walls as vertical gardens. “The client wanted a very clean look,” says landscape architect Edward Westwood, Jr. of the courtyard. “Our challenge was to select and arrange the plantings so that we could accomplish lushness through variety, interesting textures and layering, while also providing a relaxed visual structure that looked organized.” While that new foliage gradually blooms to its full potential, Mike revels in the views of a canopy of mahogany trees that have long resided in the neighborhood. “I love to sit in a little swivel chair with a book in my hand in front of the floor-toceiling windows upstairs and look out over all the trees,” he says. “It’s almost as if you’re gazing at a bit of forest—well, a forest for Florida.”
12/3/19 3:44 PM
Large-pane, thin-line windows selected by architect Jeff Harrell allow for a flood of natural light as well as striking views of the trees in the front yard. Striped Sunbrella canvas awnings and chairs—in both white and gingko—along with custom Bevolo copper lanterns add to the charm.

Cultivating PRESENCE WORKING INTENTIONALLY WITH BELOVED MATERIALS, RAN ADLER FINDS BEAUTY IN LIFE AND ART. WRITTEN BY TANYA WARD GOODMAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY AUDREY SNOW OWEN

Naples-based assemblage artist Ran Adler (opposite) works with several materials, including needle and thread (below), horsetail rush (right), and dried mahogany pods (bottom), among others.
A
ssemblage artist Ran Adler’s work is the physical manifestation of a deeply personal philosophical and spiritual practice. Dipping into a cache of natural materials gathered on daily wanderings and annual road trips, he creates large wall hangings and installations that form an energetic link between his St. Louis childhood and his chosen home in Naples. Adler’s foray into assemblage art began when he opened his first floral studio while living in Kansas City, Missouri. Over the course of the next 25 years, he opened several studios in St. Louis and, eventually, Naples, and he started experimenting with drying materials and weaving them together. This process now forms the basis for much of his current work. Among the many natural materials Adler transforms into works of art is the horsetail rush he collects on trips to St. Louis. He uses wire to thread together the delicate segments to fashion bristly spirals and dangling, vegetal strands. Locally, he also gathers sea grapes, which, once dried, are punctured and strung together like rusty prayer beads before being combined in loose, woven structures that shift with gravity and time. And, drawing inspiration from Ghanaian artist El Anatsui, Adler drills holes in
LX_NAP03_SM_Adler_6.indd 164
piles of mahogany pods before linking them with wire to form draped, undulating shapes evocative of bark, coral or lichen. “I’m taking something out of the agricultural pile and giving it another story,” he says. The transformative power of narrative resonates with Adler on a personal level. “I’ve been a lot of people. I’ve lived in a lot of places,” he says. “But in this last chapter of my life, I’ve become the person I’ve always aspired to be.” In the past 15 years, Adler has methodically created a new pattern of existence focused on “the good things.” After selling or giving away most of his possessions, he moved into a small bungalow with a sun porch studio. White floors and walls provide a distraction-free space where he works on one piece at a time. “It wasn’t until I started to really concentrate on my work that I realized I was meditating,” he says.

“I’M TAKING SOMETHING OUT OF THE AGRICULTURAL PILE AND GIVING IT ANOTHER STORY.”
This satisfying combination of reverie and action fueled Adler’s next artistic urge: to copy the writings of Persian poet Rumi. A felled orange tree formed his first blank slate and a wood burner became his quill. He continued to make smaller pieces using bits of hurricanedamaged fruit trees and driftwood scavenged from the banks of the Mississippi. More recently, Adler has been consumed with the work of Japanese poet Ryōkan. Indulging in a bit of playacting, he stitches the words in white-onwhite linen, imagining himself as a poet so desperate to be heard that he sacrifices his own garments. These stitched pieces, as well as many large creations representing all the materials he works with, will be showcased in January in his solo exhibition at Wasmer Art Gallery, the culmination of having spent the fall semester as artist in residence at Florida Gulf Coast University. This show, along with serving as the resident artist for designer Judith Liegeois, reflects the bounty of Adler’s intentional life. In celebration, he’s making an embroidered shawl. “I’m just going to wear these words: ‘compassion’ and ‘kindness’ and ‘empathy,’ all the things I want to be wrapped in,” he says. “It’s another way of expressing the moment.” 166 / luxesource.com

onna Nathan has her own spin on the “everything old is new again” adage. “For every house I’ve done, my theme is ‘classic is always new,’ ” says the homeowner, who renovated houses in New Jersey before taking up full-time residence in Florida. Along with her affection for timeless design came a discerning eye for good properties—and her current waterfront Lido Key homestead proved no exception. Bordered by acres of nature preserve, even her modest 1960s ranch looked passable in the exceptional setting. “I loved the location, but I was on the fence for a long time about doing a teardown,” she says. Two decades of fence-sitting later, Donna finally opted to do the scrape, identifying British West Indies as the architectural direction for the replacement residence. “There was a lot of overdone Mediterranean going on, and I definitely wanted that old-world feel but cleaner,” says the homeowner, who was inspired by the shutters, trellises and balconies typical of West Indies-style homes. Brick with coral accents and turf inlays forms a repeating diagonal pattern in the auto court, where landscape designer Stephen Hazeltine combined a variety of palms and ornamental plantings to evoke a tropical ambience. “The concept was to soften the hard surface while creating a focal point in toward the main entry doors,” he explains. Inside, interior designer Angela Rodriquez sought to marry the architecture and coastal setting with her client’s penchant for classical style. “Donna had magazine pages of interiors with beautiful trimwork as a common thread,” Rodriguez says. “So we looked to adapt that in such a way that it fit both the scale and tone of this home.” Wainscot paneling on the main floor and stairway, a coffered ceiling

in the living room and a ceiling dome in the breakfast room are exquisitely wrought examples. While wood-frame chairs in the living room and rattan and wicker furnishings in the kitchen speak to the West Indies, Donna’s collection of Oriental rugs provided traditional starting points in key public spaces. “I saw one unrolled and felt really strongly that it was destined for the living room,” says Rodriguez, who mimicked the creamy tones of the floor covering with the chenille sofa and played up the deep blues with navy velvet tub chairs. “It adds luxurious depth and allowed us to embrace a higher level of contrast not typical in a coastal living room in this region.” Another rug complements the wood table and the ecru leather and chenille chairs in the dining room while the blue silk wallcovering connects the space to the nearby waterway. But it’s the predominantly white-on-white walls and upholstered pieces in similar tones that truly accentuate the home’s locale. “I love the way natural light plays up white trim work on white walls,” she says. “It’s so timeless and crisp, and it really shows off the excellent craftsmanship in construction.” Luckily, general contractor Ryan Perrone welcomed the challenge of intricate tasks like mitering the edges of the raised walnut ceiling in the bar area of the club room, which, along with the wall paneling, was built on-site so that there was no need to cover the corners with trim. “The bar area is really special,” says Perrone. “It’s reminiscent of an English pub but on the beach, which brings out the West Indies flair.” Perrone also made his mark outside by installing cypress brackets on the garages and custom rafter tails, as well as assisting in the creation of a pergola to showcase Donna’s collection of exotic orchids, which Perrone refers to as the jewel of the house. Accordingly, the master bath opens to reveal the private orchid garden and a bronze cupid fountain. A long rectangular mosaic inset on the floor leads the eye out to the plant array while an extra-wide marble tub deck can accommodate potted varieties. “The subtle white, gray and green palette allows nature to be the star,” says Rodriguez, who also responded to a homeowner request for a horse-themed mud room off the garage with vertical paneling reminiscent of a high-end tack room, as well as leather-wrapped cabinet pulls. “Donna came to us with a few different styles and influences in mind,” Rodriguez says. “Our approach is always to blend and balance different perspectives in such a way that we reach the magical feeling of cohesiveness seen here.”

In the entryway, a custom mahogany door and a chandelier fashioned from beveled crystals set in metal wings by Fine Art Lamps establish the home’s theme of classic elegance. Just beyond in the living room is an upholstered armchair by Hickory Chair.

Right: About her approach to design, interior designer Angela Rodriguez says, “It’s a mix of careful advance planning with intuition.” In the living room, her calculated instincts resulted in a quiet backdrop of Kravet embroidered silk drapes, a sofa in Pindler chenille and a Hickory Chair coffee table. The patterned accent pillows are covered in Hodsoll McKenzie fabric. Opposite: Rodriguez designed the dome and molding details that distinguish the breakfast nook, and general contractor Ryan Perrone worked with Loewen windows and local retailer Engler Window & Door on the fenestration. Centering the space is a Bernhardt table surrounded by McGuire chairs with seats wrapped in Nobilis fabric.

Left: In response to the homeowner’s combined love of orchids and pergolas, the design team added a pergola right off the master bath, which she filled with a variety of exotic flowers. “The pergola is the jewel of the house,” says Perrone, who worked out the intricate patterns of the structure with Walpole Outdoors. “We almost always include custom drapery in dining rooms we design. It’s such a critical element to set the desired tone,” says Rodriguez, who swagged Kravet fabric against a Phillip Jeffries blue silk wallcovering. A Visual Comfort chandelier warms the Hickory Chair table and Baker chairs upholstered in Clarke & Clarke fabric and Green Hides leather.

“The floor and ceiling features are intentionally designed to lead the eye out to the private garden, says the designer about the marble penny round mosaic floor inset. The glazed ceramic tile wainscoting in the shower is from Walker Zanger and the tub is from The Plumbing Place. The marble tub surround and matching vanity countertops are from UMI.
