POP OF COLOR

Micah Tipler, founder of TIPLER Design, is a true believer in embracing color in the kitchen. With DacorMatch, the innovative color system introduced by leading luxury appliance brand, Dacor, you can personalize your appliances in any pantone imaginable. Show your true colors. All of them.

Micah Tipler PRINCIPAL, TIPLER DESIGN Houston, TX

H

ouston based interior designer and Dacor Design Council member, Micah Tipler, is a force in the design, architecture, procurement, showroom, development, and build industries. Her “outside of the box approach has earned her status as an industry leader, and she is applauded for the design risks she takes, including her creative use of color in kitchen projects.

“What excites my design team and our clients about DacorMatch is the capability to truly customize something.” DacorMatch allows designers and their clients to customize the kitchen like never before. “Everyone uses their kitchen in a slightly different way. Being able to tailor it to fit all of our clients’ needs has become critical to the design process,” Tipler says. The DacorMatch Color System makes it possible to paint Heritage wall ovens and ranges in any color on the spectrum. “We’ve done ranges in subdued colors, from pearl white to navy blue. But we’ve also designed fun ovens in teal, fuchsia and orange, making something really unique and special,” she shares. The process is simple. By providing Dacor with your selected color swatch, the team will match it exactly, delivering a custom appliance fit to your taste. Tipler shares from experience: “Once we’ve established a color palette for a particular project, we determine an accent color that speaks to the client. Then, we provide Dacor with a pantone number, and the team creates a sample to send us for approval. It’s been a match every time.” In addition, Dacor offers seven standard colors to choose from. “DacorMatch is truly limitless, which as a designer, is hugely exciting,” Tipler says. “Being able to specify a personalized appliance for our clients that we know they’ll enjoy with their families for years is game-changing.” From start to finish, DacorMatch appliances take six to seven weeks. Warming Drawer in DacorMatch upon special request only.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Designers are increasingly seeking out bespoke pieces for their clients, such as this bold wall treatment by MJ Atelier (right).

Welcome to our annual Luxury Report issue dedicated to luxury in all its forms and iterations. To prepare for this issue, our editors reached out to designer-friends to ask, “How do you define luxury?” It’s interesting to read their responses. Certainly, it’s not about extravagance or price. For many, it’s about comfort, calm and a sense of peace in an otherwise noisy and somewhat chaotic world. Luxury is most definitely about anything that is made with great care and an attention to detail. I think it’s also about originality, which seems to be rarer to find these days. Most anything that’s elusive or slightly out of reach can be perceived as luxurious. Of course, time is the ultimate luxury: The idea of waiting for something to be made, (while we’re all programmed for instant gratification these days) seems sumptuous. I can relate to Ken Fulk’s response—that luxury is about the little things, like the scent of fresh-clipped flowers or an unplanned Sunday spent on the sofa. Can’t count how many weekends I’ve fallen into a nap on my red English roll arm, with a paperback novel atop my lap and my two Shih Tzu’s curled up beside me. Heaven!

Fashion designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” With customization on the rise, many designers could apply the sentiment to homes outfitted with bespoke elements—including Achille Salvagni, principal of his eponymous international architectural and design practice. “In the last 10 years, my clientele has increasingly sought out homes that are oneof-a-kind,” he says. “In many ways, looking for a designer is like looking for a tailor that can make a dress that fits your body perfectly.” He cites a client who recently hired him to create a highly custom home in Mumbai, India. “She wanted a living room that was a portrait of her family,” he explains. “After interviewing

the family members, I created furniture that represents the qualities of each. A sofa embodies the personality of the father, the table is inspired by the daughter—together, all the furniture tells this family’s story.” Maria Apelo Cruz, who co-founded the decorative arts studio MJ Atelier with her husband Mike Jovanovic, also sees an increase in customers seeking one-off wallcoverings, furnishings and lighting. “We are riding the wave of designers who want to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Today’s clients are looking for conversation pieces that no one else has.” An example is the wallcovering they made for an inveterate video gamer that includes symbology from classics including Zelda, Pac-Man and Pokémon.

Cruz says that bringing a designer’s creations to life requires finding the right craftspeople, and that’s challenging. “Many aspects of quality craftsmanship take a lifetime to master—so by the time you’ve perfected your trade, it’s time to retire,” she says. “Traditionally, a lot of information was passed down through families, but these days, some of the offspring of contemporary craftspeople are pursuing other things.” To keep those skills alive, she and her husband have started

personal aspect that makes the effort and expenditure worth it. The company offers their products in bespoke sizes, colors and fabrics. “Every person has a different idea about what makes the perfect design elements. What could be better than picking your own fabrics in the color combination to make something just for you? Customization is the ultimate expression of luxury.”

Custom designs take the form of personalized wall treatments, such as the one shown on the previous page by MJ Atelier. Other examples include Hammerton Custom’s oneof-a-kind lighting fixtures (top, right); interior furnishings by Achille Salvagni (center); and personalized linens by Matouk (below, left).

a teaching guild—and to the couple’s delight, they are discovering an eager audience. “The stereotype of a millennial is a person staring at a computer screen,” Cruz says. “But we’ve found many young people who want to learn how to paint, draw and gild.” That’s not to say there’s no place for computer screens in today’s customization climate. In fact, technology is facilitating even higher levels of tailored details. “These days, we have old-world techniques and modern tools living together—you’ll find an anvil next to computer-driven cutting equipment,” says Paul Verbecky, the general manager at Hammerton Custom. “Computer modeling is enabling us to do things we couldn’t have imagined in the past—we recently created a model showing a 6,000-pound fixture that’s 25 feet at its widest point. It’s the easiest and fastest way to show how a piece like that would look in a space.” But custom design takes longer and is more expensive to produce—so why are more consumers seeking it out? George Matouk, Jr., CEO and president of the linen company that bears his family’s name, believes it’s the

Comfort ZONE

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN TEAMS UP WITH PERENNIALS TO CREATE FABRICS AND RUGS THAT WORK INDOORS AND OUT. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON

Timothy Corrigan is a self-proclaimed “Perennials freak.” With the debut of his new seven-fabric, three-rug collection, Perennials by Timothy Corrigan, the celebrated designer has put his own stamp on the high-performance fabric company’s “rugged yet beautiful” ideology. Luxe got the scoop on this exciting collaboration and why indoor-outdoor textiles are the future of design. You are crazy about high-performance fabrics. I’ve been using performance textiles for years— back when they were still ugly striped canvases! I realized early on, if you don’t have to worry about how you’re living in a house then it makes such a difference. I know some people who won’t let anyone drink red wine in their home, and I hate everything about that! When it is a “look but don’t touch” zone, then you’re not comfortable, your family isn’t comfortable and your guests aren’t comfortable. And the appeal of Perennials? It’s a gamechanger. Not all performance fabrics are created equal, and Perennials is kind of fanatical with how its fabrics perform. Also, the rugs feel like the

finest wool or silk. The company’s beautiful, soft carpet is stain-proof, which is exactly what people want. Customers want beauty and practicality. What was the spark for your collection? I have offices in Paris and Los Angeles, so my aesthetic is very much European-inspired, but through a casual California filter. In this collection there’s a fabric that is almost like an Italian tapestry, which is called Go for Baroque. There are also chinoiserie options, one which is inspired by a Chinese wallpaper and another that is reminiscent of an 18th-century interpretation of a French chinoiserie. You skew traditional, while Perennials leans contemporary. This was a real leap for Perennials. Ann Sutherland, who started the company, isn’t naturally drawn to the warmer colors and classical styles that I use but she said, “That’s why we need you!” I told her, “This is not going to be in your comfort zone. Be ready for it.” What’s in the crystal ball for performance fabrics? It’s important to see these fabrics as

“Clients want beauty and practicality,” says designer Timothy Corrigan of his latest performance fabric and rug collection with Perennials.

something to be used indoors and figuring out how more products can be performance based. We’ll also see an expansion into materials like wood finishes with marine varnish so people don’t have to worry about putting down a glass. The future of design is influenced by consumers who are not willing to make the trade-off between performance and beauty.

THE LATEST TABLETOP FINDS ADD A TOUCH OF ARTFUL LIVING TO THE EVERYDAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

This season’s spirited tabletop selections are making it easy to transform everyday place settings into luxurious works of art. Each piece offers a creative expression while also evoking a bold sense of time and place. Consider Buccellati’s Doge collection, which inspirits its Italian craftmanship and pays homage to the splendors of Venetian art with hand-hammered and chiseled silver enhanced with malachite, lapis and red jasper. Closer to home, Michelle Blade looked to her Pacific Northwestern roots for her ceramic Garden Series. Molly Hatch’s Always Collection brings a modern and playful twist to a traditional 18th-century European surface pattern, and Luke Edward Hall’s collaboration with Richard Ginori is based on his love of Greco-Roman mythology. And finally, James Peter Henry morphed his public art installation at TableArt into a limited-edition collection that celebrates “the complexity of a human journey in a possible fourth-dimensional state.”

A COLORFUL LIFE CARLETON VARNEY RELEASES HIS LATEST VOLUME, ROOMS TO REMEMBER

WRITTEN BY NINA KORMAN

Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, owners of the ultra-successful furniture company that bears their name, are in a car, speeding through rural North Carolina on a weekday morning. Moving forward quickly is an apt metaphor for their business, which is now celebrating its 30 th anniversary. Gold and Williams initially founded a factory in Taylorsville to ensure superior, American-made products, then proceeded to take care of their now 900-plus employees by establishing on-site day care, a gym, a health center and a café. Their progressive policies rocked the furniture industry, and their products—vintage-style leather club chairs and seating slipcovered in casual fabrics—did too. The duo spoke with Luxe about their time in the industry. mgbwhome.com

Color, pattern, contrast and supreme confidence: All are terms that describe the rooms of Carleton Varney, the business associate and disciple of designer Dorothy Draper, whose firm he purchased following her 1969 death. Featuring jewel-toned walls, snowy white trim, elegant furnishings and carpets festooned with a wildly blooming garden of florals, the singular spaces Varney creates highlight the lessons he learned from his stylistic sensei and have cemented his role as interior designer to American presidents, governors and Hollywood celebrities as well as the mind behind stately embassies and magnificent hotels around the world. One of those majestic hostelries, the historic 397room Grand Hotel, on Michigan’s Mackinac Island since 1887, is the subject of Varney’s 36th book, Rooms to Remember. Since 1976, Varney has been refreshing spaces at the Grand, and here he leads a tour of its 43 Named Suites, distinctive lodgings devoted to and inspired by historical and famous figures ranging from Nancy Reagan to Napoleon to the late Gloria Vanderbilt. shannongrovepress.com

How does 30 feel? MG: Weird and interesting and great. We just hired a CEO, Allison O’Connor, to spearhead things, nurture our team and position us for even bigger and better growth in the future. Greatest lesson learned while in business? BW: Follow your gut. If you don’t have that really deep feeling about something, it may not be quite perfect. So many people let others get in their minds or talk them out of stuff, then things go kind of haywire. Proudest accomplishment as a company? BW: Day care. We started it 22 years ago. Since then we’ve had about 70 kids there all the time. You get to see them grow up. What’s next? MG: A whole new take on leather club chairs in exciting colors, like leaf green, deep red and peacock blue (shown). Some of the silhouettes are classic modern while others have a very new traditional look. 114 / luxesource.com

ON STYLE: INSPIRATION AND ADVICE FROM THE NEW GENERATION OF INTERIOR DESIGN

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Since its inception in 1929, The Museum of Modern Art has been ever-changing. And it continues to grow: In October, the museum will reopen its doors with an additional 40,000 square feet of gallery space. Architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro— in collaboration with Gensler—designed the $400 million project, which aims to shift focus from discipline-specific galleries to a more thematic approach. The MarieJosée and Henry Kravis Studio will feature live programming and performances, while the Paula and James Crown Platform will offer an area for experimental exploration. MoMA visitors will still enjoy favorites like The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, but they’ll also be exposed to artists who aren’t as well known. Opening exhibitions include “Sur moderno: Journeys of Abstraction―The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift,” which offers a deeper look at the museum’s Latin American art; and “Betye Saar: The Legends of Black Girl’s Window,” featuring the artist’s rare, early prints from the 1960s, among others. moma.org

BLUEPRINT GREENWICH WEST

This fall, the first tower in New York City designed by a French female architect will reach full enclosure. Françoise Raynaud, along with her Paris-based firm Loci Anima, melds a Parisian influence with a New York City-style loft feel in Greenwich West. Located at 110 Charlton Street, the condominium will be one of the tallest buildings in Hudson Square. Topping out at 30 stories with 170 residences, the tower provides sweeping views of the Hudson River, New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. The handmade brick façade was created by Belgian brickworks Wienerberger, while interiors have been designed by another Parisian: designer Sebastien Segers, who has worked with Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior. greenwichwest.com 116 / luxesource.com

“I’m fond of saying, ‘Its time has come and gone,’ ” says residential designer Dinyar Wadia, of encouraging his clients to think outside the box. After more than 40 years in the business, Wadia may be a big proponent of traditional architecture, but he’s not afraid to push the boundaries. One of his recent projects, a high-rise apartment in the Olympic Tower, which he completed with project architect Robert Lominski and designer Hernan Arriaga, showcases his proficiency at blending classic design with sleek overtones to create a modern-day home. Luxe chatted with Wadia about his vision for the space and what’s next for his eponymous firm. wadiaassociates.com Walk us through the concept for this residence. In the beginning it was a bit cloudy. The previous apartment was the abode of a Saudi prince. It was very traditional with lots of gold and blond wood, heavy carpets and very heavy fixtures. After some convincing, the clients agreed to something more modern and updated. You combined two apartments to create this home. What challenges did you encounter? The apartments were a maze of narrow rows and corridors, so making the rooms seem naturally connected was difficult. Originally, the owners didn’t want to take space away from the bedrooms or bathrooms to widen the hallways. But I convinced them that turning these narrow corridors into a gallery would change the complexion of the apartment. The new hallways make it feel more comfortable. Now it doesn’t feel like a utilitarian space; it’s beautiful. 120 / luxesource.com

Those views! How did you factor them into the design? As you stepped into the main entrance, you could see the Statue of Liberty. That was the main event. Yet, the kitchen was there, right off the front door. So I moved it and created a combined living room and family room. The living area is more formal and focused on the views, while the family room is more comfortable and casual. It was a win-win situation. The entryway design is stunning. What effect were you going for? There are three panels (shown top, right)—the center panel is the entrance to the kitchen. This was my way of doing a concealed door. The client had seen a picture of a screen she really liked. I used that for inspiration. The other two panels are fixed. It offers a slightly traditional decorative feel in a modern space.

We hear you are opening an office in Palm Beach. Congratulations! Yes, we hope for it to be up and running sometime this fall. Three years ago we designed a beautiful house in Manalapan, Florida, near the island, and business seems to be flowing that way. It’s a very positive community in the sense that people are building homes and they are just so happy to be there. There’s a buzz in the area.

discoverzephyr

A seasoned entertainer’s kitchen is no longer complete without a Presrv™ Cooler. Created by wine preservation and ventilation pioneer Zephyr, the Presrv Wine and Beverage Coolers are posh and high-performance refrigeration units complete with Full-Extension Wood Racks, Active Cooling Technology, and two distinct temperature zones. Ideal for those who appreciate everything from red and white wines, craft beer and perfectly chilled sodas, the Beverage Cooler dips down to a frigid 34 °F—an ideal temperature for storing beer and other beverages that taste best at their frostiest. The Presrv Cooler works in nearly any space; its design is centered on providing solutions for the way people live and where they spend their time in the home. In an open kitchen, a Presrv Wine Cooler ensures that favorite bottles of wine are easily accessible when entertaining guests. And in game rooms, large walk-in closets or dens, a Beverage Cooler is an ideal option to store favorite drinks, so they are on hand and chilled to perfection.

Luke Siow, Zephyr President

INTO the BLUE ONCE OVERLOOKED KITCHEN STORAGE SPACES ARE REINVENTED WITH RICH, JUICY COLOR. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

“I love using bold color in a room that feels unexpected,” explains Houston-based designer Lauren Haskett of this sophisticated butler’s pantry scheme that packs a punch with its sensuous blue shade. Traditionally, the kitchen has been a neutral zone where clients steered clear of adventurous tones. Yet today designers are turning to bright and dramatic designs in the kitchen’s auxiliary spaces: Think glamorous and vivid gem tones in a prep kitchen, butler’s pantry or wet bar. These more modest areas are being transformed into rich jewel boxes—a surprising departure from what was once a purely functional room. As Haskett notes, “Color really sets the tone of the room.” So why not add some drama to peeling potatoes and storing spaghetti sauce?

PANTRY PERFECT LAUREN HASKETT

While using a strong color took some persuading (Black was the original pick!), designer Lauren Haskett always knew her client’s butler’s pantry needed something fresh. The trick was elevating the design of this space with polished surfaces and elegant details that were in keeping with the rest of this stately home near Fort Worth, Texas. houstoninteriordesign.co Tell us about the function of this space. I call this the butler’s pantry, but it really has a multitude of uses including acting as a connector between the main kitchen, media room and mudroom, so it gets used all the time. As the kitchen space only has one wall of cabinetry, this room doubles as a coffee bar, wet bar, charging station, storage area for china and catering kitchen. Several appliances, including a Perlick refrigerator, Scotsman ice machine and KitchenAid dishwasher, are also housed in the pantry.

A Native Trails sink and Kallista faucet sit in front of a large window that looks out onto the patio and pool. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls.

Is the same level of sophistication carried throughout the house? The overall aesthetic of the home is definitely on the formal side and even the spaces that are casual still have an elegance to them, so I wanted to make sure the butler’s pantry reflected how refined this residence is. I also wanted to inject a dose of glamour with this grand color.

photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.

The color is so striking. How did you select it? I’m so happy we went with Hague Blue because there is so much depth to it; it can go green, blue and gray all at the same time. However, what’s most important when working with a darker color in a space is to incorporate contrast, so it won’t ever feel like a cave. Here, we added lighter countertops, pale wallpaper, metallic hardware and glass-front cabinets that bounce light around.

Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl, the designers behind West Hollywood, California, firm Studio Life.Style, wanted to make sure the spaces they created for a clients’ home in Los Angeles had longevity and an enduring aesthetic for their growing family. In the boy’s bathroom they decided to focus on a scheme that was fun and playful yet sophisticated enough to stand the test of time. “Patterned tiles are a great way to bring in color,” the designers explain of a bath area lined with graphic greenand-white tiles, a combination that feels less expected than the traditional blue and brings in bit of whimsy. studio-lifestyle.com 198 / luxesource.com

CIUFFO CABINETRY BRINGS A MODERN TOUCH TO A HISTORICAL HOME

A Sag Harbor house, built in 1760 and restored by Breskin Development, is a prime example of the elegance and contemporary flair Ciuffo Cabinetry brings to a home. In the kitchen pictured, Ciuffo Cabinetry created a contemporary masterpiece by installing sleek, soft gray cabinets highlighted with stainless-steel and brass accents. Paying homage to the home’s rich history, exposed wooden beams were restored and incorporated into the design. Warm brass and bronze hardware were combined with a brushed stainless-steel hood to create a pop of color and texture, while satin brass stanchions with glass shelves lend an elegant, airy quality to the space. A stunning fourth-story loft bar features carefully selected elements that transform a modest space into a striking corner of the home. Highlights of the bar’s design include dark walnut cabinetry, a matte black faucet and warm copper accents.

“We chose copper for its authenticity. And since it is not lacquered, the copper will develop a mellow patina over time, achieving a storied, antique look that only comes with time and use,” president Gary Ciuffo says. Smoky painted glass panels add a vintage touch to the front of the bar and echo the tones of the copper and dark-stained cabinetry. “It was an incredible experience designing and creating cabinetry for this historical home,” Ciuffo says. “Our goal was to maintain the home’s history while elevating spaces with high quality materials and contemporary touches.” Founded in 1907, Ciuffo Cabinetry is an award-winning custom kitchen and millwork company rich in tradition. Custom Ciuffo millwork can be found in some of the most luxurious homes across the New York Tri-State area, as well as the Hamptons and other coveted locations across the East Coast.

OUR ANNUAL DEEP DIVE INTO REAL ESTATE AND THE SHEER LUXURY OF HIGH-RISE LIVING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

MOVING ON UP Over the last few years, more and more people have been gravitating toward cities and the vibrant lifestyle that high-rise living delivers. Young executives, international professionals, families and retired couples are looking for ease, convenience and walkability—museums, restaurants and schools at their doorstep—but all within the frame of luxury living. To meet the demand, developers are turning to the world’s most respected architects and designers to create residential buildings that meet every need, and quite a few whims. A latenight cognac and a game of billiards? A sunrise swim in the infinity pool overlooking the city? It’s all possible. And while the amenities are designed to feel resort-like, they are also intended to feel like home.

RISE

The Harrison, on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, was ahead of the curve when it devoted its penthouse floor not to the preeminent condo but to its residents’ pleasure—a democratizing move that new developments are following. There, designer Ken Fulk, who designed all of the property’s public spaces, created Uncle Harry’s, a green-lacquered lounge that lets everyone take in the 49th floor’s spectacular vistas. “With 180-degree views spanning from the ocean to the bay, we imagined this as the sky-high aerie of a bon vivant explorer that just happens to be your favorite uncle,” says Fulk. Accessed by a grand entry salon, the floor includes a dining room, pantry, fitness center and spa. It’s an homage to the city’s elegant and continental spirit, just with Fulk’s signature pizazz. theharrisonsf.com

TABLE TALK For its latest collection, Armani/Casa has re-released its clever Link coffee tables with a colorful new look. Originally created in walnut and brass, the new edition, which debuted at Salone del Mobile in Milan this spring, is designed with shagreen-effect leather tops in red, blue and green—colors that appear throughout the collection. The tabletops are banded with satin-brass trim and set on walnut bases. Lobby library at 277 Fifth Avenue “Our design reflects the energy and sensibility of NoMad,” says Jeffrey Beers of his vision for 277 Fifth Avenue. “It’s my favorite neighborhood in New York, so it was easy to be inspired by the area’s historical buildings and creative vibe.” Making a traditional statement in thoroughly modern style is the lobby library, one of the building’s most sophisticated amenities. 277fifth.com Why a library? In the building’s lobby entrance, we really wanted to make an instant “welcome home” statement. Describe the look. Handsome, sensible, tailored and timeless. Tell us about the features. If you look closely, you’ll see the library mimics the building’s exterior. It’s beautifully made with dramatic, double-height cases and incredible wood detailing. While we have an affection for designing bookcases (I’m an avid book collector), we prefer to collaborate with renowned publishers like Assouline to curate what goes onto the shelves.

HIGH SOCIETY

FOUR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS CHAT ABOUT LUXURY AMENITIES AND THE FUTURE OF HIGH-RISE LIVING.

CURT R. BAILEY

LEONARD STEINBERG

KEVIN BATCHELOR

BRIAN LEVITT

What trends are you seeing in the high-rise sector? Developers will increasingly cater to families who appreciate the benefits of urban living—a graciously designed residence that extends to worldclass amenities for all generations. Must-have amenity: Fitness centers. I want state-of-the-art equipment, first-class service, innovative programming, and well-designed spaces that offer communal cardio workouts to private Pilates sessions. relatedmidwest.com

Why is the high-rise market so hot? Time is the last luxury, and high-rise living delivers convenience. Elevating yourself above the city allows you to enjoy all its joys while separating yourself when it’s time to relax and unwind. Amenities on the horizon: Wind turbines on top, generating energy for the entire building and a landing pad for drone deliveries. Security will become much greater, too. compass.com

Who’s moving in? In the past decade, we have seen a downsizing trend amongst empty nesters, gypsy nesters and older millennials. What’s luring them? This demographic wants walkability and a 24-hour, lock-and-leave lifestyle. Everyone wants their own personal concierge to handle everything from dry cleaning and food deliveries to tickets to the opera. They’re looking for higher-quality, personalized butler-style services. You can’t beat the hyper-convenience. hines.com

What amenity is most important to you? Where we live has a profound effect on our well-being and I’m all for beautifully designed common spaces that encourage gathering. How do you see the high-rise lifestyle advancing? People choose condo living because they want to know their neighbors. There needs to be a renewed focus on creating memorable experiences that build a stronger connection between people, place and community. navareal.com

Behind every product in Cielo’s lineup is a true passion for ceramic. Historically, the material has had a reputation for being difficult to work with and delicate. But according to Alessio Coramusi, CEO of Cielo, this notion need stay no longer. Years of research has led the company to discover new ways to make this beautiful medium more durable, while expanding the possible options for its shape, size, thickness, texture and color. “We combine top-notch industrial production with traditional, handmade workmanship,” Coramusi says. “This is how we come to offer iconic pieces, like Siwa and I Catini.” The clean-lined, minimalistic sink designs of which he speaks are two of Cielo’s best sellers. These and more have arrived on Greene Street in SoHo, where the Italian brand’s new showroom—a resource for New York’s kitchen and bath obsessed—opened in July.

THE K+B ESSENTIAL: SCALE Proper proportions are a key underlier in any room’s design, but in the kitchen and bathroom, they are … well, everything. GRANDE CENTRAL SHOWROOMS OF NY 212.876.0100 | centralplumbingspec.com

Decorative plumbing often makes up the subtle elements that tie a whole kitchen or bathroom design together. So it comes as little surprise to find that once New Yorkers have decided to renovate these two essential spaces, Grande Central Showrooms of NY is high on the list of stops to make. A division of Central Plumbing Specialties, the brand continually seeks the latest innovations, from high-performance toilets that cleanse and dry, to steam showers that play music, adjust lighting and offer aromatherapy, to kitchen faucets that precisely add water to a pot without the need for a person to be present. Sustainability, too, is a focus. “We provide the most current water-saving, WaterSense, LEED-certified products,” says Howard Frankel, president of the company. “We are minimizing our energy footprint while enhancing our client’s experience.”

THE MUSTS FOR EVERY HOME In the cook’s kitchen … + Choose a beautiful, deep and generously sized sink, along with a faucet with a spray head to make washing vegetables and cleanup easier. + A pot filler above the stove is key. + Don’t overlook the need for a garbage disposal. In the sanctuary bath … + The stand-up shower replaces the bathtub. It is thought of as a vertical tub, with amenities such as aromatherapy, chromotherapy, steam therapy, and integrated music and lights. Add a great drenching shower or rain head.

ADVICE ON GETTING STARTED “Unless you were trained in kitchen and bath design, seek professional help at the level you need,” Frankel recommends. “This will make the process fluid and the finished product functional and enjoyable.”

“Our manufacturers use world-class designers to make everyday products extraordinary.”

REVOLUTION IN DESIGN Gurri shares how new technology in stone development makes kitchen living easy

As an award-winning, full-service design, remodel and construction company, specializing in architectural stone and tile installation, Gurri is tuned in with the latest trends in kitchen and bath design. According to Sami Kelmendi, Gurri president, “The ‘living kitchen’ is the new living room. The kitchen has evolved into the focal gathering place of the home, where families cook, dine, and entertain together.”

Bilotta Kitchen cabinets and Dekton by Cosentino countertops are highlighted by Artistic Tile’s brush-stroke nickel flooring.

This movement has brought about a demand for a more functional kitchen—one with sophisticated surfaces that are maintenance-free, but still look and feel high end. “People love to cook, but they hate to clean,” Kelmendi says, “which is why engineered and sintered stone is becoming increasingly popular in the kitchen and bath space.” Today’s technological advances in architectural surfaces have recaptured the beauty of marble with engineered and sintered stone. “Innovative manufacturers like Porcelanosa, Cosentino, Neolith and Lapitec have developed these next-generation surface materials. Unique and timeless, they can be used for walls, floors, countertops and more, creating the look of marble with stain-resistant qualities and easy-to-clean benefits.” Kelmendi shares. Moreover, manmade stone has become easier to install and has greater versatility in design and texture.

Bathroom wall and floor are clad in Porcelanosa’s Kala-White Polished Porcelain large slabs.

“Due to these advancements in stone development, the world is experiencing a new style in kitchen and bath design. At Gurri, where we blend traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art materials and the latest technology, we find it very exciting.”

SKY’S the LIMIT UNDERSTATED LUXURY AND MAGICAL VIEWS ELEVATE A CHELSEA PENTHOUSE TO NEW HEIGHTS. WRITTEN BY LIZ ARNOLD / PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIEVES ANDERSON

INTERIOR DESIGN / JAMES HUNIFORD, HUNIFORD DESIGN STUDIO HOME BUILDER / MARK DOBBIN, HIGHLINE CONSTRUCTION GROUP

ames Huniford makes pulling off a neutral palette look easy. A prime example: the glass-wrapped Chelsea penthouse he designed as a vacation home for his clients, where views include those of New York’s celebrated landmarks, from the Statue of Liberty to the Hudson River to The High Line’s manicured park. But Huniford’s elegant interiors—a composition of geometric furnishings in shades of white, cream, beige and gray—form their own sort of skyline, with the interior designer’s mix of tactile materials adding interest and nuance to the color scheme. After all, he says, “One texture would be boring.” The couple, who called Huniford after seeing a model apartment he had designed, were looking for a new configuration for this penthouse, one that was equally ideal for a visit from their adult children, a dinner party for 15 or a quiet evening for two. “We were in sync with how they wanted to live,” Huniford says, “and they had a strong point

of view about clean lines and a lot of white and sunlight.” One of the most important things Huniford had to consider was how the various groups of people might occupy the penthouse and how the layout could accommodate each scenario. Working with builder Mark Dobbin, he carved intimate spaces from the main living room that maintain an open sense of flow. “The goal was to use simple design elements without ornamentation,” says the designer. A floating fireplace set in angular cast concrete separates the living area from the family area, which shares space with the open kitchen and dining room. The couple owns homes in many of their favorite locales around the world, and they wanted their Manhattan residence to be a place to retreat. “They love the idea of luxury and uniqueness,” says Huniford. As a result, much of the furniture is custom, and fabrics and rugs were sourced from specialty weavers. Window seats that Huniford

designed, for example, feature cushions upholstered in a high-pile handwoven fabric from the venerable Nantucket Looms, while the rug in the entry hall is by Elizabeth Eakins. “I love working with these artisans who are making something that’s not mass produced,” he says. “That was important for these clients.” Objects throughout the home reflect this same thoughtfulness. A fiber piece by artist Sally England hangs on the family room wall, and, in the dining room, a series of cast-concrete candelabra by Brooklyn-based Vonnegut/ Kraft is brutalist, urban and entirely unusual. Texture on the walls includes a pigmented plaster in the entry, where one stripe is flat and the next is waxed— “inspired by Agnes Martin,” reveals Huniford. “I love her work.” The den is wrapped in flat wood veneer paneling, and the master bedroom wallpaper is comprised of individual sheets of Barkskin that were hand-applied. Drawing from the work of Billy Baldwin and Karl Springer, Huniford covered a console in painted grass cloth, while the kitchen’s polished concrete complements the fireplace. The views from inside the penthouse are stunning, but the vistas from the balconies and the roof terrace “are magical,” Huniford remarks. He designed custom furniture for the terrace, including a mahogany sectional and boxes for plantings. “That kind of tailoring creates something very special,” he says. “Everywhere you turn, there’s something to see.” It’s been said that originality flourishes within constraints, and with its subdued colors and thoughtful design, this vacation residence is a case study. “I love a client who knows what works for them,” says Huniford. “It helps me expand my creativity, and I can exceed their expectations.”

“Everywhere you turn, there’s something to see,” says Huniford of the rooftop, which is lined with plants installed by Roger Miller Gardens. The clients’ stone table sits in front of a custom sectional facing metal-mesh pieces by Russell Woodard from Architectural Anarchy.

sk anyone about the keys to a successful relationship and it’s a safe bet trust will be high on the list. For designer Kati Curtis, trust was paramount as she helped her clients realize a dream they had first conjured up decades ago. Back then, as newlyweds living in a beach apartment at the foot of the Andes Mountains, they imagined an apartment in New York City located close to the Museum of Natural History. Fast-forward some 25 years, and, after securing a place in a new-construction building— sight unseen—they were ready to move ahead. After finding Curtis online, and meeting her just once, they entrusted the designer with the job. “That’s what made it special,” she says. “They told me, ‘We know your style, we know what you do, and we know you’re going to do something wonderful for us.’ It was such a gift.” So complete was the homeowners’ faith in Curtis that they expressed only a few wishes. In South America, their home was traditional with heavy draperies, fabrics and trims, and the wife had presented Curtis with samples from a trip to the D&D Building that leaned in that direction. “She wanted to express that depth and quality and detail,” says Curtis. “Our job was to do that in a ‘New York modern’ way.” Achieving that required laying the right foundation, since, the designer points out, “New-construction apartments can be cold and gray. The standard finishes are beautiful, but without richness and depth.” So she and general contractor Tom Oakley, of Razzino Renovations, rolled up their sleeves, installing custom crown moldings, swapping in new doors and adding millwork all in the pursuit of the more traditional underpinnings envisioned.

“THE CLIENTS DIDN’T HAVE TO LIFT A FINGER. THEY JUST HAD TO SHOW UP AND BE HOME TO REALIZE THEIR DREAM.” –KATI CURTIS

Wallcoverings throughout imbue spaces with that longedfor richness, tradition and detail. In the master bedroom, the wife had found a Chinese-inspired Gracie paper of birds and flowering branches on a solid background. To keep it from looking too traditional, Curtis paired it with the contemporary forms of the concave bedside tables, marble lamps and the headboard upholstered with a block-printed design. “That gives it an edge,” she notes. But perhaps no other wallcovering stands out the way the one in the main living spaces does. “Based on the paper in the master, we knew the wife liked that hand-painted quality,” says the designer, “and we established early on in the design process that we wanted something like that for the great room.” After experimenting with multiple options, Curtis remembered seeing Fromental’s Rockface pattern. Its design checked multiple boxes: Drawn from Chinese mountain landscapes, it hinted at the clients’ base near the Andes; its abstract feel made it skew modern; and, being hand-painted, it appealed to the wife’s desire for traditional flair. “This was a standard colorway,” says Curtis, “but the golds and blues drew us because that’s what the clients had been drawn to.” To complement the wallpaper, she chose other elements with faceted details, such as the fixtures in the entry and over the dining table, which tie back to the jagged motif of the mountain. Show-stopping furniture adds yet another layer to the design. Case in point: a turquoise bar cabinet in the dining area. Curtis had originally chosen a cream version, but on a visit to the showroom with her clients, they spotted the cabinet in the bold hue. “We looked at each other and agreed it had to be that color,” the designer recalls. But such boldness doesn’t overtake the softness that permeates the apartment. Fabrics covering the seating are soft and inviting, and, along with the rugs, run more toward neutrals. The cast-bronze Laverne cocktail table combines style with purpose and durability. “You can put your feet on it or spill wine on it, but it’s still stunning,” Curtis says. The dining table is on casters and can be easily expanded to seat 12, while the generous dining chairs have a lounge-y feel that encourages guests to linger over meals. The clients’ trust in Curtis paid off. “They didn’t have to lift a finger. They just had to show up and be home to realize their dream,” the designer says. “They didn’t try to control everything from thousands of miles away.” And once they arrived from the airport and were sipping champagne and enjoying their new digs, they mentioned something to the designer that still deeply touches her. “They said the colors were actually the same colors of the beach apartment they had 25 years ago when they first had the dream of a New York apartment,” she remembers. “I didn’t know that—it was totally coincidental.”

“As you enter the apartment, you’re greeted by the Decoinspired bronze mirror hung over a vintage Balinese console table,” designer Kati Curtis says of her clients’ Upper West Side pied-àterre. The Julian Chichester piece reflects the mountain pattern of the hand-painted wallpaper from Fromental.

CHAOS THEORY INSPIRED BY NATURE’S ENIGMATIC PATTERNS, PAPER ARTIST AMY GENSER CREATES COLLAGES BRIMMING WITH VITALITY. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH / PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH WINCHESTER

“IT’S LIKE I’M DOING A JIGSAW PUZZLE. I DON’T HAVE A FINAL IMAGE, BUT SOMEHOW I KNOW WHERE THE PIECES GO AND WHEN IT’S COMPLETE.”

A

my Genser’s textural creations make big statements, bringing to life unpredictable patterns found across the earth and the cosmos. Look closely, however, and you’ll discover her panoramas are collages comprised of tiny, delicate rolls of paper. “My work has a lot to do with the micro and macro, how small parts come together to form a whole,” explains the West Hartfordbased artist. “It’s the same way in nature. I love its perfect imperfection, how things feel organized and disorganized at the same time.” Effecting such detail requires immense visual dexterity, a skill Genser grew to appreciate as a child watching her mother, Vicki Eisenfeld—a fine art jewelry designer— manipulate raw stones and metals. Family trips to the beach in Rhode Island also honed her eye for nature. “I spent hours watching the sky and the way the waves hit the shore,” she recalls. “Those patterns sank deep into my memory.” Her current practice, however, didn’t solidify until she took a papermaking class during her master’s program at the Rhode Island School of Design. Then majoring in graphic design, she fell hard for the medium’s tactile potential. “I loved being able to work in three dimensions versus creating through a computer screen.” She soon developed her distinctive technique of rolling layers of thin mulberry sheets, incorporating different hues. “I’m essentially treating paper like pigment,” she notes. “You can see the actual lines up close, but from a few steps back, it looks like one color.” She cuts the rolls into various lengths and clusters them together to form undulating topographies across the surface. Underneath, she paints a backdrop in acrylic, adding translucency with gel. She also experiments with this underlayer for her all-white

works, carving an uneven base for the paper rolls out of foam. “This way I can play around with dimensionality, even though I’m using only one color,” she says. The artist usually begins with a rough compositional outline and palette, though its origins range from the specific to the abstract. “Sometimes I just start working and it evolves as I go,” says Genser. “It’s like I’m doing a jigsaw puzzle. I don’t have a final image, but somehow I know where the pieces go and when it’s complete.” These works often borrow the colors and contours of objects she keeps around her studio, like aerial snapshots, NASA satellite images of space, photographs from outdoor strolls, or her collection of coral, petrified wood and fossils. Beehives directly inspired her more structured, static pieces in black and white. Other patterns refer to specific places, such as her upcoming piece for the University of Iowa Hospital, which echoes the river and creeks that flow through Iowa City. Many of her largest commissions are for hospitals, including her installation for the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, which resembles a slice of earth viewed from space. She still receives notes from parents who, surrounded by the turmoil of their children’s illness, found refuge in the controlled chaos of this work. These responses, says Genser, “have been such a gift,” and have come to inform the crux of her practice—helping others find some beauty in an uncertain world.

Artist Amy Genser uses coils of mulberry paper as her primary medium in her works, which include Wax (above and opposite, left), Wane (opposite, right) and Neptune (opposite, center).

esigner Brad Ford had been working with a New York City-based couple for years when they approached him about a new project outside of Princeton, New Jersey. Their long-standing relationship meant that Ford was well versed in their style. “They’re into design and art,” he notes of the clients. “The wife has incredible taste.” For this home, the couple wanted something slightly different from what they’d had in the past. “Early on they referenced a ‘modern barn,’ so it was a process of working through what that meant,” says Ford. Adds architect Thomas Kligerman, whose firm was brought on upon Ford’s recommendation: “The emphasis was on creating an agricultural feel. It’s also the concept of different styles of buildings, an architectural mash-up that looks like it came about over time.” The architecture firm’s partner-in-charge, Joel Barkley, and project architect Andrew Urbany took the plan and ran with it, working with general contractor John Flower to create a charming, rambling home. Materials such as fieldstone and reclaimed wood set the stage for a soft, timeworn feeling. “The fieldstone, the cupola, the little windows you might see on a barn—it’s a country aesthetic done in a residential way,” Kligerman says. Adds Ford: “There’s an earthiness about it. People respond to that. There’s also an openness. They live like a lot of families— they enjoy cooking and gathering at the kitchen table, and the dining room is smack in the center of the house—but there’s something so fresh about the open concept here.” Much of that freshness comes via the home’s angled spaces and many windows—those small, barn-like ones

“THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL HOME, BUT WITHOUT FEELING TOO SERIOUS.” –BRAD FORD 274 / luxesource.com

Kligerman speaks of, as well as contemporary picture windows. There’s also an airiness from the balance between a neutral, slightly earthy color scheme and midcentury modern furnishings. “Sometimes when you take that direction you have to be particularly considerate of the palette and go for something serene,” says Ford, who worked with project manager Erin Mahan. They kept it edited but warm, not just by the palette but through the use of textures such as wood and nubby fabrics. They also ensured it was family friendly (the homeowners have four young children) and comfortably familiar. “We’d worked on a number of projects with them, so we thought, ‘What can we bring with us? What should we reupholster?’ ” Ford recalls. “It took quite a bit of strategy to make it all work together.” There are plenty of new additions too, like the Apparatus light fixture that fills the towering space above the dining table. “I always strive for a balance of sophistication and casual; impactful but not attention-getting,” Ford reveals. To that end, he played with scale in the powder room, with its big-blooming wallpaper, and brought in fluffy touches, like the living room’s woolly stools and a vintage sheep statue that keeps watch on the stair landing. There are fun moments in the architecture as well, especially in the master bedroom. “The idea behind the curved ceiling in here comes from when you’re in bed and the sheet billows over you and drops down—it feels good!” exclaims Kligerman, crediting Flower’s skill with creating this moment of serenity. “It’s just a really restful, dreamlike shape that hovers over the room.” “This is a beautiful home but without feeling too serious,” remarks Ford—with one exception: a serious art collection, including a Thomas Struth in the family room. “That was one of the first major pieces,” says the designer of the young family’s growing collection. “They like things that are livable. Works should be considered not just from an investment point of view, but also what you want to live with.” Here, the photograph, from Struth’s “Paradise” series, acts almost as a window, further tying the house to its wooded setting, a site enhanced by landscape architect Brian Bare. “We were commissioned to explore a fun and provocative landscape that respectfully integrated with their home,” says Bare, who worked with horticulturist Susan Howard. “There are interconnected elements of exploration: a berry labyrinth, a cherry orchard, a wildflower meadow, and a wetland and woodland walk.” Preservation of the site’s mature trees also imparts that sought-after feeling of age, along with a little mystery as to whether the home is new or a renovation. “In spite of the historical references on the outside, it’s really a very modern house,” says Kligerman, “and it was made for a modern family.”

Designer Brad Ford delivered a country home in the suburbs of Princeton, New Jersey, for longtime clients that reflects their interest in art and midcentury design. DESIGNLUSH Two dedicated gallery collections, full-scale interior design services and more than 30 artists and vendors from all over the world in representation … this is Designlush. Based in New York, the company was founded to be a platform for new artists and ideas—a resource and touchstone in the world of design. “We welcome innovation but do not cater to trend; we honor tradition but will never be traditional,” says company president Stephen Mitchell, on the brand’s philosophy. Dedicated to the avant-garde, Designlush works with clients in locations around the globe, from its home city to Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Chicago, London, South America, Dubai and beyond. In any one of its projects, there is a sense that the design was driven by art selection and the notion of livable luxury. “Our clients tend to be more cosmopolitan and enjoy loungy environments filled with glamorous, sophisticated elements that are unapologetically modern with a bit of an edge,” Mitchell shares. “We encourage input whenever possible and strive for more of a collaborative process. The more you know about a client and their likes and dislikes, the easier it is to fine-tune the direction of a project. And since many of our clients are educated about design already, this makes for a fantastic end result.”

What is the client’s role in the process? One should never assume a designer ‘gets them’ because they like a few things they have done. OT/TRA For Sofia and Adam Zimmerman, the progression from architecture and interiors to the creation of furnishings was organic. After designing a single piece for a friend, the husband-and-wife team decided to adapt the concept into a conference table for the main office of their firm, Zimmerman Workshop Architecture + Design. It became a conversation piece among all who visited the space, and the duo agreed that they had both enjoyed the process immensely. And so, Ot/tra was born. With the intention of creating designs that are versatile and fitting for a variety of aesthetic styles, Ot/tra’s highly architectural furnishings are made from thoughtfully sourced, natural wood. While the Zimmermans primarily produce signature collections, they do custom too. “We love inviting clients into the process,” Sofia says. “We’ll start tracing over designs and see what they’re drawn to.” Adam adds, “Often, the best new pieces come from a gathering of various viewpoints. A few of our custom designs have since been adapted and incorporated into our permanent collection.” Curated for residential, hospitality and workplace settings alike, Ot/tra’s furnishings are often seen to be mixed with elements that offer a counterpoint to their sculptural quality, like a sumptuous textile or texture-rich artwork.

“ We want each piece to serve its function well, but also bring an artful— even delightful— element to any room.”

Ask the Expert What have been some of your company’s key milestones so far? Within months of launching, we were so grateful to appear in publications including Worth and Interior Design. Support like this, along with our presence at shows including ICFF and Brooklyn Designs, has enabled us to expand the collection and grow our team. In 2018, we were presented with an IFDA Rising Stars of Design award and named Best Up and Coming Maker at ASID’s Design Honors. We’re also excited about what’s to come: This fall we will move into a new space with much more room for our shop, as well as a showroom.

What’s next for your firm? We just released a full array of colors! What is most appealing about these is that we can offer something unexpected through a pop of color, but our method allows the natural elements of the wood to shine through.

AXIOM FINE ART | CONSULTING AXIOM Fine Art | Consulting is disrupting the fine art business. “We bring a hands-on approach to the collector, whether they are ‘blue chip’ buyers or discovering art for the first time,” president and CEO Russell A. Glotfelty says. “We want art to be accessible to all, regardless of budget or art education.” Inspired by all things cultural—fashion, food, architecture, travel, interior design—Glotfelty and his team navigate every project with a tailored approach. Given the uniqueness of the firm’s business model, this is key. “We work with homeowners, but also realty teams, developers and investors,” Glotfelty explains. “Our first major project was for a penthouse that Madison Equities and Sotheby’s International Realty was working on showing. We placed more than 100 works of art, ranging from emerging artists’ pieces to coveted collector works.” Since it does serve a wide range of project types, AXIOM begins each endeavor by pairing the client with the ideal team member for their brand, personality, background, needs and style. “As the one-on-one rapports are built and nurtured, our team member will also find strength in collaborating with everyone else in-house, enabling them to provide the utmost attention and comprehensive knowledge to the client at all times,” Glotfelty says.

“ Our goal is to bring fresh life and style to collecting art.”

Ask the Expert How did your company come to be? With 37 years of experience in the luxury art sector behind me, I opened AXIOM in Winter Park, Florida, in August of 2017. Within a few months, that location became our headquarters, and we opened new satellite offices in South Florida and New York. Up to this point, what has been your greatest success? One of our most profound achievements so far has been receiving stellar feedback. Nikki Field, a senior global advisor at Sotheby’s, said, “The AXIOM team is responsible for our recent sale of a $58 million penthouse. The art created the added value and stature our property needed to secure press attention and ultimately close at asking price.”

What’s next for the firm? We have recently opened AXIOM Luxury Real Estate, which offers extended services and connections. We are also excited about new projects in Seattle, Mexico City, Los Angeles, and even China.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS

ELIZABETH GILL INTERIORS “I know that people can be intimidated or overwhelmed by the design process, but the fact is, your environment significantly impacts so many elements of your life. My objective is to collaborate with each client to create spaces that fully represent their individual style and are joyful places which inspire them to live their very best life,” says interior designer Elizabeth Gill. Elizabeth earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in international business from The George Washington University and went on to study interior design and architecture in the Master of Fine Arts program at the same esteemed institution. She also holds a graduate certificate in visual arts from Harvard. After six years working in high-end residential interior design, most recently as a senior designer at a top 100 firm on Madison Avenue, Gill decided to open her own studio. Elizabeth Gill Interiors is based in New York City, but also works with clients in the Hamptons, Palm Beach, Florida, and Washington, D.C.

“ A beautifully decorated space is like magic when it makes you feel something, not just see something.”

Ask the Expert What style are you most known for? First and foremost, I am known for decorating spaces that make my clients happy. I mostly design modern spaces with classic elements that are sophisticated yet comfortable. However, I enjoy all styles of design and love working with clients who have an appreciation for 18th-century European antiques just as much as those who have a passion for Art Deco one-of-a-kinds. To me, design is a transformative experience, going from a blank canvas to a place my clients truly want to be (and are proud of).

Up to this point, what has been your greatest success? I worked for a lovely family that owns properties here and abroad. After putting the finishing touches on their home in the Hamptons, I received a call of sincere and emotional thanks. It was extremely gratifying, because I had worked tirelessly to transform that residence into a dream family getaway. Feedback like that is the most fulfilling for me.

WILLEY DESIGN John Willey’s interior design style could be described as “comfortably modern.” “I like furnishings to have an unexpected mix of classic and contemporary, suffused with bold colors and proportions that bring an elegant blend of sophistication and irreverence to my interiors,” he says, speaking to the spaces he crafts through his namesake firm, Willey Design. After moving to New York City, Willey transitioned his work from the hospitality-based projects he had been doing in Chicago, to the more residential side of things. He has found the change rewarding, to say the least. “I find this part of the industry much more personal and satisfying,” he says. “I enjoy all types of residential projects, and sometimes I like the tighter deadlines, because it gets the creative juices flowing, and in making fast, instinctual decisions.” Taking on projects throughout the city, the Hamptons, Westchester County and Connecticut, Willey and his team work closely with each client to solve problems and create environments that beautifully suit the homeowner’s tastes, needs and budget. “My goal is to bring solutions to the table, but also to take my clients out of their comfort zone a little,” Willey says. “I aim to create long-term, enduring interiors that will be cherished for years to come.”

Ask the Expert What are some of your influences and inspirations? The sculptures of Brâncuși, the color palette of Ben Nicholson’s paintings, Rick Owens’ furniture and actress Tilda Swinton are all influences. Travel is the biggest inspiration, and recently I’ve gotten to explore the symmetry of Japan, the colors of Havana and Cartagena, and the grand palaces and formal gardens of France and Germany.

2

Share the story of one of your most interesting projects. I had a European client call me out of the blue, looking for an interior designer for her newly purchased, five-bedroom renovation at the iconic 15 Central Park West building. Throughout the project, she only visited from France four times: for the initial meeting, to see the complete design presentation, to approve the paint colors and after all of the furnishings and art were placed. She was open to everything I came up with.
