Thirty years ago, Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams set out to make the world a more comfortable place. With a shared belief that comfort has the power to change lives, they created a home furnishings brand unlike any other. Disruptors in the furniture industry long before it was fashionable, Mitchell and Bob broke barriers from the start. Not only were they introducing bold new designs, they were also offering lifetime warranties on products and delivering goods within 30 days. Throughout their 30 years in business together, Mitchell and Bob have never been afraid to push boundaries and take creative risks, especially in their ad campaigns. While some have been more risqué than others, many of the brand’s ads have helped shape opinions about equality, in addition to selling furniture.
Other ads featured the late great Lulu, Mitchell and Bob’s beloved bulldog mascot. Lulu was (and still is) the company’s muse, especially when it comes to designing family- and pet-friendly furnishings. Lulu’s memory is honored in other ways at the company’s factory and corporate headquarters in North Carolina. Employees can enjoy a healthy breakfast and lunch at Café Lulu, the on-site, chef-run cafeteria. And there’s Mitchell and Bob’s proudest accomplishment: Lulu’s Child Enrichment Center, a non-profit, 5-star daycare, which was the first of its kind in the furniture industry. Much like a fashion show, design is about storytelling; creating a fantasy. Yet in reality, the process is equal parts imagination and hard work, all in preparation for show time. The final reveal and wow-factor moments don’t necessarily reflect the hours of decisionmaking; the emails, phone calls and installs; the headboard that doesn’t fit through the front door (and had to be craned-in through a second-story terrace); the crack in the poured concrete that needs to be reset. However, when it’s pencils down time, architects, designers and contractors pull it together and get it done. I love hearing behind-the-scenes stories about the design process; both the bloopers and the wins. Shortly before press time, I attended the Kips Bay Palm Beach Show House where many designer-friends had fabulous rooms. Each of them had a vision of what they would conjure for their space. They upholstered and wallpapered, carpeted and plastered; moved things in, out and around until opening day when the dream went on display. Every home undergoes a dress rehearsal of sorts. We certainly hope that you enjoy the show!

HISTORY LESSON: The ancient Greeks taught us the importance of harmonizing different components of a structure and creating right-size buildings in proportion and scale. We often forget those lessons in 21st-century architecture. LASTING IMPRESSION: I traveled a long way to see Swiss architect Peter Zumthor’s thermal baths at Vals, and it was one of the most memorable architectural moments of my life. It is all about the human sensory experience: visual, olfactory, auditory and tactile.

Through the magic of synesthesia, you can almost see sound qualities while in an acoustically well-considered place. WISH LIST: I long for a return to less-smart homes. Miami | renegonzalezarchitects.com NATURE AND NURTURE: Every project begins with understanding the location and a site’s unique qualities. This also applies to cultural conditions, as was the case with a house we designed in Key Biscayne that depicts its Latin setting with the inclusion of patios, portales (porches) and persianas (louvered screens). FORWARD THINKING: Modernism will always be popular in architecture, but I wish nostalgia would fall out of style. Contemporary design, which still adheres to many of the tenets of modernism, is timeless. Some people find comfort in nostalgia and pastiches of historical styles, but the end result never feels authentic to me. LIVING IN HARMONY: Our design for the Prairie Avenue house in Miami Beach, a luxury residence elevated in response to the environmental threat of sea-level rise, acknowledges traditional precedents such as native American Chickee huts and the community of Stiltsville. It is adapted to contemporary living in sync with the changing environment.

SPLURGE-WORTHY: The best quality windows are the first indication of thoughtfulness in a design, and they can by far make or break the final outcome of a project. PROUD MOMENT: For a home in Southampton, New York, the client was excited to approach the architecture, landscape and interior decoration of the home in a comprehensive way. It was a rare and enjoyable occurrence to have oversight on every aspect of the residence. EARLY INSPIRATION: I saw The Sound of Music at the age of 4 and was so impressed by the Von Trapp’s baroque classical villa. Since then, I have been inspired by grand ballrooms, which is a space sadly lost to history for most elevated clients. To have a grandly scaled and ornate room sparsely furnished so that a special event may take place truly makes the space extraordinary.

Seattle | reruchastudio.com CLASSIC VS. TRENDY: When a client is focused on a trend, they’re often missing the bigger picture of permanence and place. Natural light, however, will always be in fashion. We have an innate attachment to the sun here in Seattle. The projects that harness this best are the ones that feel eternal. INFLUENTIAL BUILDING: I traveled to France on a tour of Le Corbusier’s architecture and Villa Savoye really resonated with me. The curved ramps take you from one space to another culminating in a rooftop garden filled with sunlight and stillness. It taught me spaces don’t have to be perfect. UNTAPPED MATERIAL: Brick has a sense of permanence. I'm dreaming of the right client, budget and site to use it.

SPOTLIGHT: In our projects, we deliberately study the effects of the sun on a space, yet there are moments when a sunbeam, calculated for arrival in a specific room, offers an even greater result. Those are the best happy accidents. CASE STUDY: We're designing a home in Tucson that embodies our passion for framing views, capturing light and revealing spatial character. The site has a stellar visual and physical connection to an iconic mountain range. With its well-positioned sight lines, the home showcases the essence of its setting. BIGGER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER: We strive for cozy, comfortable spaces regardless of the square footage. High ceilings will always be popular but it’s better to focus on proportion rather than height.

SOUTHERN CHARM: The South is full of inspiration. Perhaps the most celebrated house in all of Atlanta is known as Swan House. Built in 1928 by one of the country's preeminent architects, Philip Shutze, it’s an icon of classic design. Charleston is also one of the most magical places. Its casual sophistication, haunting presence of history among a bustling modern city, and its quintessential Southern feeling are unparalleled. My favorites are the Miles Brewton House and Drayton Hall. IN THE WORKS: We are in the midst of a large new estate in the Georgia Low Country, based on precedents from some of my favorite South Carolina houses. I’m taking inspiration from the past, but making it new and relevant in a way that doesn’t feel like a museum. BIDDING ADIEU: Openconcept floor plans are on their way out. People are returning to the notion of rooms being rooms. Intimacy and coziness are hallmarks of great living spaces.

WANDERLUST: I love Barcelona for its sheer variety of buildings—from Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà and Frank Gehry’s Golden Fish to Richard Meier’s Museum of Contemporary Art and EMBT’s Santa Caterina Market. But my favorite is the Barcelona Pavilion by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the International Exposition. Its sleek, elegant design combined with rich natural materials is a study in simplicity; it’s the essence of architectural modernism. HEART OF THE HOME: Invest in a high-quality kitchen countertop. Kitchens are the focal point for family life. A good countertop should be durable, tell a story and stand the test of time. The island we designed for our Manhattan Beach Bowen house (shown) is custom terrazzo inspired by a handful of pebbles our client found on the beach. We blended a mix of colored stones in a sandy matrix to achieve the natural look. HAVING A MOMENT: Seventies-style chic décor is back en vogue—think velvets, geometric patterns, warm palettes, funky textures and abstract silhouettes.
SUSTAINABLE STYLE: Our goal is to maximize design impact while keeping resource consumption and environmental impact to a minimum, so we prefer to work with natural and renewable materials like wood and bamboo, and metals like steel and copper, that can be recycled. SUCCESSFUL ARCHITECTURE: The best spaces offer unexpected moments, new forms of interaction, and ultimately challenge us to engage with life, the environment and each other in different ways. DREAM BUILDERS: We both started out as engineers but realized we wanted to pursue architecture after we finished our undergraduate degrees. We have a natural attraction to rigorous technical precision, while also feeling a need to solve open-ended problems that require creative solutions. Aiming to make the world more beautiful, we find that architecture ultimately becomes about building physical harmony.

create elaborate inlays. “A liquid mix of scagliola is inserted into engravings that have been made with hammer and chisel in a slab of marble or stone,” he says. “When dry, it is rubbed smooth with water and pumice and polished with wax, oil, lacquers and stone.” The process sounds relatively simple, yet learning how to make scagliola involves years of study and practice. Woods, for example, spent time traveling around Europe and learning from experts there. “It’s not like there is one way or one recipe,” she says. “And in Italy, the scagliola is like pasta—every region has a slightly different way of making it.” The material’s unique, moldable nature attracted artist Deborah Moss, co-founder of Moss & Lam in Canada. Moss, who learned about scagliola as an art history student, started

Looking at the majestic domed ceilings, ornate paneled walls and stately colonnades of 17th-century Italian basilicas, many people marvel at what seems to be colorful marble in the architecture. They might be surprised to know that what looks like natural stone is actually a hardened mixture of gypsum or plaster, pigments and sometimes glue. It’s a material called scagliola, a decorative surface that’s been fooling the eye for centuries. Though celebrated as an art today, scagliola started as a way to save time and money. “Artisans began using it to solve logistical problems,” explains Melissa Vogley Woods, an Ohio artist who creates scagliola sculptures. “Real marble was costly, heavy and hard to install. It was easier to use scagliola to create the same effect.” Scagliola specialist Mark Burston of Hayles & Howe, a British firm specializing in the material, says the use of the material as we know it today began in Munich in 1603 and spread across Europe, arriving in Britain in the early 1800s and then the United States in the 19th century. Although not quarried from the earth like marble, the creation of scagliola is not without effort. “You begin with some pigments, water and plaster, mix them into a dough-like consistency and press into molds to attain the shapes required,” Burston says. “After demolding, its then infilled and sanded several times to achieve a lustrous finish.” Alessandro Bianchi—whose family’s business, Bianco Bianchi in Florence, Italy, has been producing scagliola works since the 1960s—says the material can also be used to

using it in furniture design to create an element of surprise. “I love the classic feeling it gives our contemporary pieces,” she says. In her studio, artisans use silicone molds and traditional scagliola methods to achieve the geometric shapes and marble-like surfaces found in the Playtime Series, a set of colorful modern tables. British interior designer Francis Sultana also uses the material to add an enduring nature to his work. “My clients require pieces of furniture that stand the test of time,” he says. “They want looks that will work in 10, 20 and 50 years and, for me, scagliola has proved that it remains en vogue from one century to the next.” The designer also uses scagliola for one of the reasons early craftspeople did—noting that its lightweight nature is a technical plus. Though its use waned for a time in the 19th century, Moss predicts the look of scagliola has legs in the 21st century and beyond as a new generation rediscovers the ancient practice. And though many are experimenting with boldly hued pigments, Moss believes the way scagliola is created will likely remain the same. “It’s not a process that can really be automated—it requires a lot of hand mixing and hand sanding to achieve the best results,” she says. “It gives me goosebumps to think of how the process remains unchanged; to be part of that unbroken lineage is humbling.”

nspired by the cast-iron birds that sit atop Grand Central Station, Harry Winston’s recent New York Collection, which includes diamond-andplatinum Eagle earrings, pays homage to the city’s built environment, where Winston lived, worked and fell in love. Similar to Winston’s creative team, other jewelry designers are following suit and finding inspiration in notable international architectural structures. The artistic forces behind the ancient Egyptian faience emerald-and-sapphire Hemmerle necklace looked to the exterior forms and interior drawings of Egyptian temples. And Jean Prounis and Temple St. Clair both turned to Buddhist stupas, or meditation structures, as architectural muses. “I was inspired by my visit to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an China,” says Prounis of her Pagoda earrings with South Sea Pearl bases and multi-story domes of granulated 22-karat gold. The Taj Mahal, perhaps the greatest example of India’s chhatris architecture, played a large role in the vision for both Sanjay Kasliwal’s Jaali cuff and Surendra Saboo’s sapphire, opal and diamond Aura ring. “I wanted this piece to look like the night sky above the Taj Mahal with a blue moon center punctuated by brilliant stars in the distance,” says Saboo. The ornate nature of these exquisite creations proves that incorporating traditional design elements, especially ones from significant and timeworn structures, will most certainly never go out of style.

SPLIT SECONDS: HAVANA
Accurate or not, Cuba’s state of perpetual disintegration—repeatedly portrayed in books, movies, magazines and on the news—became a cliché long ago. Faded grandeur and corrosive corruption will surely become a thing of the past on the island one day. Some authors, however, like Abe Kogan, are facilitating a head start. With a mindboggling résumé that includes stints as a writer, film producer, international entrepreneur and even a Formula One champion race car driver, Kogan chose to don his photographer hat and hit the streets of the Cuban capital. The result is Split Seconds: Havana, the first in a series of books where he intends to methodically “photo journalize,” in his words, an array of regions and cities, highlighting how they’ve evolved through time. Although some crumbling classical structures are still evident in Kogan’s spare images of Havana, he deliberately avoided focusing on the typical landscapes and seascapes. Instead, the arresting black-and-white photographs present a vibrant urban center replete with vintage cars, many examples of still-majestic architecture and a remarkably upbeat population. When creating their first rug collection, Miami-based interior design duo Alison Antrobus and Ruby Ramirez thought outside the box—literally—with eclectic pieces that feature unraveling wefts and irregular polygon silhouettes. More than pure ornamentation, these rugs, says Ramirez, function as “interior architectural elements for the floor.” We spoke with the designers about their process and inspiration. antrobusramirez.com What inspired this collection? RR: When designing interiors, we felt we exhausted the spectrum of what’s available. So we wanted to create a new vocabulary for flooring surfaces. Major influences? AA: Early on we both worked with designer Philippe Starck, who encouraged a design curiosity in us and a willingness to color outside the lines. Where do these rugs work best? RR: They really respond to the needs of open-space living. Their irregular shapes help carve out inviting areas. AA: And furniture design has become more dynamic, so it’s only natural that the floor becomes a stage for those pieces. Favorite piece so far? AA: I love the playfulness of our Spirograph design and how it jolts fond memories of childhood Spirograph toys. RR: For me the unraveling series became the most cerebral and humorous, intentionally ravaging something that’s made to last. AA: And it’s also a little naughty too, creating a misbehaved design.

With tongue-in-cheek humor and Instagram-worthy designs, Jessica Chaney brings needlepoint to a new generation with her landmark Palm Beach boutique, Lycette. Named after her greatgrandmother, the brand replaces tired platitudes on needlepoint canvases with irreverent oneliners carefully drawn in a bold, graphic style. They capture “the cheekiness of how women my age talk in tweets—short and pithy,” explains the 28-year-old. The shop, however, still retains (and celebrates) the craft’s classic artisanal charm. “At Lycette, I want everyone to feel like they are in a beautiful home, where they’re inspired to make heirlooms that will be passed down for generations,” says Chaney. Employing groundbreaking techniques and innovative materials, jewelry design underwent a tidal change during the early 1900s. Now, the position of women in that design revolution takes center stage in the exhibition, “Maker & Muse: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry.” Running through May 26 at the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, the show features more than 200 pieces of handcrafted art jewelry pulled from various historic collections. When examining iconic pieces from the era, “We soon realized we were really looking at women’s changing role in art jewelry,” says the show’s curator, jewelry historian Elyse Zorn Karlin. “Women were the inspiration for the jewelry that men were making, but for the first time they were also makers in their own right.” The selected works include French Art Nouveau and German Jugendstil-style pieces, which depict idealized feminine forms like the mythical nudes of Rene Lalique. The exhibit also highlights rarities from Chicago’s famed Kalo Silver Workshop, founded in 1900 by female artisans. Designers from this group, such as Clara Barck Welles, contributed greatly “to art jewelers working today,” notes Karlin. “Jewelry may look very different now, but their idea of individuals making handcrafted works in the studio lives on.” flaglermuseum.us

Artist Amber Cowan uses by-product of industry to produce her wild and wonderful glass sculptures. The Philadelphiabased creative, whose works are exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, employs flameworking techniques to fashion recycled glass and pressed glassware giving new life to otherwise wasted materials. Long before Banksy began using stencils to create his street art, Michael De Feo’s iconic illustration of a single flower appeared on the streets of more than 60 cities worldwide in its stenciled graffiti form in the early 1990s. Crafted from meerschaum—a soft white clay material found in Eskisehir, a small city in Turkey—the intricately detailed piece is perforated, allowing tiny beams of light to emanate through it. “I never ever thought I would move,” Barbara Sallick explains, but within 30 seconds of walking in the front door of her new home in Southport, Connecticut, she fell in love. Soon, Sallick and her husband, who co-founded the luxury kitchen and bath company Waterworks 40 years ago, were bidding adieu to the address they had lived at for half a century and contemplating a kitchen remodel opportunity that looked much different from the one they had undertaken as a young family. “When it came down to it, it just seemed like the right thing to do,” Barbara notes of her new kitchen, “and what’s more, over time, I’ve learned a thing or two.” waterworks.com What was important to you when designing this kitchen? The overriding conversation I had with myself was about how I would feel in the space and how I would create a kitchen I loved. To achieve this, I knew it had to be warm, friendly, easy and accessible. I feel privileged to live this more casual lifestyle, which is really the way many of us operate in the kitchen today. Your treatment of the wall tile is so striking. I love tile and it’s my thing, so I wasn’t going to just put up a backsplash! I tiled the entire kitchen because I like the idea of grids and how they add a textural component but can also make a room feel larger when a wider format style is used. Because this entire area isn’t too big, I wanted to make sure the dining and operational spaces were tied together in some way and the tile achieved this. 162 / luxesource.com
How did you choose the hardware? This was a very difficult, deliberate decision and you can see that all of the pulls and lights are unlacquered brass. Yet, I chose matte nickel for the faucet because it aligns visually with the stainless steel sink and stove. This gave me a chance to mix metals in places that felt logical. Clockwise from top: Belden cabinetry by Waterworks is hand-painted in Whisper, a pale gray that creates an airy aesthetic at the top while the lower cabinetry is done in Midnight to anchor the space. Waterworks’ Cushing and Portsmouth Pulls in unlacquered brass pop against the navy cabinetry and drawer dividers help organize essentials.

Some may think the openkitchen concept is about to expire, but I believe the informal layout of this plan reflects the way we live and entertain today, so it’s not going away anytime soon. Try as you might, you’ll never get your guests out of the kitchen so it’s best to make the space more inclusive and open. Panel-ready integrated appliances are a clever way to improve optics and also create a quiet backdrop to let the kitchen design take center stage.
Color is in! While timelessness can be a valuable component of kitchen design, bright shades can certainly be brought into this space without painting the cabinetry the color of the year. I like to use bold hues in pantries or sculleries which can include wallpapering or painting inside glass cabinets as well as on the ceiling. Don’t forget about adding a pop of color with a beautiful range, too! It all just makes life in the kitchen more fun.

If you know me, you know I love to cook and entertain. So one of my favorite trends in the kitchen is that people are now cooking together; it’s all about being social! It used to be that guests would come over for a dinner party and stand around while you entertain but now everyone is involved. With more people jockeying for the same space, I think a corner sink is smart, efficient and a total no-brainer for incorporating into a more social kitchen.
While white and gray kitchens are still quite popular, we’re going to see a movement toward color and texture in cabinetry, surfaces and tile, all while continuing the ideas of seamless integration and architectural minimalism. Induction cooktops are also becoming more popular because they not only cut cooking times and emissions, but they look perfect in integrated spaces. The seamless effect of an induction cooktop flush with the countertop really lets the clean lines of the kitchen sing.

Amanda Nisbet doesn’t shy away from bold ideas, so when New York art collector-clients said, “More is more is more,” she ran with it. “We couldn’t be wishy-washy in holding eclectic pieces together,” says the designer. Nisbet upholstered the entryway with shimmering leather embellished with drips of gold by Christianson Lee Studios. “Everything had to stand its ground, so we did a lavender ottoman and a purple Kyle Bunting carpet. “Specific colors and patterns weren’t important, but creating the emotional response was,” says Dane Pressner, director of design for D’Aquino Monaco, of a cottage he designed in Snedens Landing, New York. “Our observation over the last few years is that there has been a move away from hard silver finishes and clear glass toward more natural finishes such as antique brass,” says Emma Finch, director of London-based lighting firm Hector Finch. “The emerald glass gives the Sophie chandelier a warmth and glamour that can be used in contemporary or traditional interiors,” she adds. When designer Christine Markatos Lowe was asked to transform a masculine library into a feminine space for a fashion-forward client in Santa Monica, California, she went right to a sunny de Gournay wallpaper she had spotted on a trip to New York. “The gilt paper really sets a formal tone,” she says. “This is a room meant purely for entertaining, often where dessert is served or for intimate parties hosted by the wife.” Decorative accents highlight the chinoiserie scene’s jewel tones, while neutral furnishings keep it fresh and ethereal. “As a room for special occasions, the space called for special-occasion wallpaper!” remarks the designer. markatosdesign.com

Pattern Play “My client likes cheery colors,” says designer Kirill Istomin of a home in Moscow. “She’d say, ‘As the weather isn’t great here, it’s a way of bringing sunshine into your life.’ ” For the family room, Istomin chose a Clarence House sofa fabric, repeating its circular pattern in the rug and the vintage wicker mirrors that “absorb and balance the colors.” Echoing the rectilinear forms of the mirrored bookcase is a colorful custom media cabinet that Istomin playfully calls “an homage to Mondrian.” kirillistomin.com

“It serves as a practical yet treasured space,” says Jon Kastl of Champalimaud, who oversaw the design of this Manhattan study with colleague Elisabeth Rogoff. “The sense of intimacy was delivered in the color,” Kastl notes. “Cozy and quiet” was the ultimate direction for the library-bar Oliver M. Furth designed for a couple’s new Los Angeles pied-à-terre. “They aren’t afraid of color, so this was an opportunity to push things,” says Furth, who painted the Phillip Jeffries grass cloth a rich teal while extending it to the ceiling. “It unexpectedly becomes a neutral,” he adds. An oak cabinet with chartreuse Edelman leather panels hides a refrigerator and a “healthy dose of black” grounds the entertaining space. Where to start. As with any other sous vide food, be sure to start with quality ingredients. Searing the steak in advance helps the flavor reach the core of the meat and requires less time to sear when you are done cooking sous vide.

What to use. Spices and marinades are great, and you only need a fraction of the amount used in traditional cooking. Keep in mind that ingredients such as tomato, ginger or any acids in your pouch will continue to soften the texture of proteins, raw or cooked.

How long. Time has an important effect on texture and flavor when cooking sous vide. Lean meats such as steaks are done cooking once the desired core temperature is reached, which can take around 30 minutes.

The countless cheeses—each made with only milk, rennet, bacterial cultures and salt—reflect the diversity of the contexts in which they are produced. Cheese offers a rich, “living” connection to the world. An English cheesemaker might make a firm-bodied, mild-flavored cheddar; whereas a cheesemaker from Italy would probably make a hard, dry parmesan, requiring two years to develop its sharp flavor. A cheesemaker from Southern France may make Roquefort, a cheese with a piquant flavor and white curd speckled with bluegreen mold. Steeped in tradition and regional nuance and grounded in ecological principles and biological science—yet natural and intuitive—cheesemaking is equally technical and artistic. From culture propagation to rennet coagulation to affinage, hone your palate and expand your knowledge with these takeaway tenets.
CHEESE DOESN’T LIKE TO BE TOO COLD. The perfect temperature varies depending on whom you ask, but usually ranges between 40º F and 53º F. Most home refrigerators are colder than this. As a solution, Signature Kitchen Suite has introduced the 36-inch built-in French door refrigerator with a five-mode convertible middle drawer that has distinct temperature zones for preserving deli-worthy fare at the correct temperature. The ingenious drawer’s temperature zones also include chilled wine, meats and seafood, beverage and freezer.
THE FUNDAMENTALS: Culture. Warm your milk to the right temperature, add

the right mix of microbes (bacteria, yeasts and molds) and let them do their thing. bonus: Sous vide the cheese for precise control of the temperature.

Coagulate. Add rennet and wait until the milk turns into a gel-like network. Use a medicine dropper. Cut. Using a long knife, slice the firm network into morsels of the right size and shape. note: The smaller the initial pieces, the drier (and more ageable) the cheese will be. And vice versa.

Stir. Mix the curds to expel moisture and increase firmness. A slotted spoon does the trick. Heat. If you’re making a hard, aged cheese, cook the curds to make them even sturdier. A kitchen thermometer is recommended.

Drain. Remove the liquid whey (the watery part of milk) from the solid curd by straining. You’ll need a colander and cheesecloth.

Form and press. Add your curds to the right type of form and, if necessary, apply weight to expel more whey. Buy cheese forms from a supplier or repurpose plastic containers. You’ll also want to get a draining mat.

Salt. If you haven’t already mixed it into the curd before molding, rub salt on the outside of the wheel or place your cheese into a brine solution.

Age. Manipulate the development of your final product with the right blend of temperature, moisture and time.

She is active in the industry, participating as a guest speaker, panelist and advisor for numerous design industry events. Timothy Corrigan is considered one of the leading interior designers in the world. With offices in Los Angeles and Paris, his firm has completed projects in Europe, the Middle East and across the United States. Timothy has designed successful licensed collections with several partners, including Schumacher, Royal Limoges, THG-Paris, Fromental and Samuel & Sons, with an upcoming collection for Perennials. His bestselling book, An Invitation to Chateau du Grand-Lucé, chronicles the restoration of his landmark chateau in France, and his next book, to be published by Rizzoli, will feature a number of his projects around the world.
Architect, romantic, poet and entrepreneur, Bobby McAlpine envisions home as a timeless, graceful and emotionally evocative place. He founded the firm in 1983, and has realized this ideal in a diverse array of traditional styles and regional vernaculars for clients all over the country and abroad. Today, known simply as McALPINE, the firm of architects and interior designers has offices in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and New York. Bobby’s book, The Home Within Us, remains a Rizzoli best seller, and Poetry of Place, was released in October 2017. His popular furniture line, McAlpine Home, is available nationwide.

Perched on a mountainside with panoramic views of the valley, this Paradise Valley, Arizona, abode’s design combines simple forms that speak to the architecture using soft, natural materials.
In Orono, Minnesota, a design team took advantage of the home’s architectural elements and used masonry stone as the foundation for the palette to bring the outside in.
With architecture by Osterhaus McCarthy, this Chicago residence features a floating central staircase, anchored by a walnut wall that extends to the skylight. Oak floors and white walls reinforce the lightness of the architecture.
For an oceanfront unit in Surfside, Florida, a design team implemented a series of architectural changes to give the space individuality. The resulting palette is restrained with unsaturated colors, rich in texture.

hen designer Jay Jenkins began dreaming up the interiors of a parttime Jupiter home for a Maryland couple, he didn’t struggle at all. “It’s our seventh residential project together,” he explains. “This was intended to become their primary residence, so it was important for us to maintain a certain level of warmth the Northeast has to offer while embracing the best of Florida design.” The owners were drawn to the property’s location off the Intracoastal Waterway. However, the existing house didn’t meet their needs so they decided to tear it down and build anew, blending classic architecture with contemporary updates. “Our inspiration was to build a northern Georgian home, with a traditional exterior and modern interior,” describes architect Benjamin Schreier. “The exterior is stucco, instead of brick, and has classic black shutters and a red-tiled roof.” Yet the interior offers quite a surprise. “Inside, a conventional Georgian house tends to be compartmentalized, but here the expansive rooms are on an open floorplan,” the architect says. “Every space connects effortlessly to each other and to the outdoors.” This is especially true in the back of the house, which is sheathed in glass, offering direct sight lines to the infinity pool and the lovely vista beyond.

“We designed it to be compatible with the overall look,” Jenkins says of the living area’s mahogany bar, which Superior Kitchens constructed with Caesarstone’s Raven countertop. Jenkins, though, didn’t want a visitor to enter the home and focus primarily on the view of the water. Rather, he believed revealing the grand scenery in a subtle, measured way would heighten its impact. “That’s how I came up with the idea of creating ‘visual destinations’—places where you might pause for reflection before moving on to the expansiveness outside,” he says. An early “visual destination” is a niche in the foyer, where an oceanic photograph hangs above a whitelacquered console. Cove lighting illuminates and enhances the vignette, eliminating the need for a possibly distracting pendant. “One of the interesting things about this home was creating spatial definition with the use of drywall detailing and integrated lighting,” says general contractor Scott Mustapick, who worked on the residence with his brother, builder Glenn Mustapick.
In contrast to the home’s Belgian oak flooring, Jenkins incorporated touches of mahogany—a nod to the Northeast, he explains. “We started with these quieter, cool-toned floors and then introduced warmer woods in vertical built-in elements as well as in the wood furniture,” he says. “It brings more dimension and character.” Mahogany appears on the living area’s bar, coffee table and media center built-ins, which Jenkins designed; the rich wood also backs two of the three sofas. In addition to blending northern and southern elements, the design needed to encourage leisure. “Our job was to create a relaxing yet sophisticated refuge,” Jenkins says. “We did this by keeping the interior architecture clean and crisp, yet highly detailed.” The team paid particular attention to the kitchen, which was assembled and refined in Chicago until it was ready to be installed in the abode.
A pot rack and cabinetry by de Giulio are the centerpiece in the kitchen, where the island countertop shows off mother-of-pearl granite and the backsplash wall is Taj Mahal quartzite. The Holly Hunt Siren counter stools feature the brand’s Masquerade Phantom faux leather. Across from Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, Dornbracht’s Tara Ultra faucets pour into a Kallista sink.

Dominating but not overpowering the space is taupecolored horizontal rift-oak cabinetry complemented by glass storage towers trimmed in polished stainless steel. While neutral hues pervade the residence, Jenkins made sure to introduce a few lively tones as well. “We favored carefully edited color, rather than using lots of distracting patterns and different fabrics,” he says. “Our overall palette is pale and pure, with pops of raspberry and citron.” The living area’s white linen sofas, for example, are topped with berrycolored pillows in a pattern that reflects the wife’s fondness for butterflies. A cozy sitting area by the kitchen beckons with a pair of sunny yellow armchairs atop a fiery orange rug. And down the hall, the designer transformed the den into a glowing cocoon by wrapping the walls, sofa, armchair, rug and coffee table in similar shades of raspberry. An oak ceiling and built-in help balance the bold look, and a series of framed butterflies adds a feminine touch.
The white master bedroom, meanwhile, shows off cheery yellow accents, appearing prominently on pillows, bedding, an ottoman and draperies. The color flows into the en-suite bathroom—which is clad in a contemporary floral wallcovering—and even to the outdoor shower, embellished with yellow tiles. “It’s the most extensive outdoor shower I’ve built,” Scott Mustapick says. “This one is full-height, with double shower heads, special glass tiles and complete access from inside.” Outside, the loggia offers a covered dining and sitting area by the pool, plus a fireplace and white exterior furnishings accented by pink pillows. One final “visual destination” appears across from the loggia: a custom artwork of aluminum butterflies fluttering against an exterior wall—a finishing touch for Jenkins’ seventh project with the homeowners. “It’s rewarding that you can still surprise and delight old clients with new things,” he says.

n Helmut Koller’s world, zebras have red stripes, a bear wears a deep purple coat, and a midnight-blue panther stalks its prey. These rainbowed beasts are among the subjects of Koller’s acrylic paintings, which combine refined technique and wildly imaginative color. In the last 20-plus years, the self-taught artist has completed enough portraits to fill a zoo—“from the fly to the rhino,” he laughs. Born in Austria, Koller began his career in 1974 as the official photographer of the Vienna State Opera, regularly capturing the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Leonard Bernstein. After seven years, he relocated to New York, ultimately landing in Palm Beach in 1982 at the urging of his wife, a jewelry designer with a studio in Miami. The move stirred a change in Koller, and in 1987 he began producing mixed-media art, then painting nudes. He relinquished the camera in the 1990s after attending a Native American sun dance ceremony in New Mexico, an experience that motivated him to paint portraits from historic photos of leaders such as Sitting Bull and Geronimo. “I loved that you saw in their faces this great honor but also incredible loss,” he says. “That was quite a challenge, and I found it beautiful to express.” That period also helped Koller perfect methods used to summon his muse since 1997: animals. He employs a traditional process that involves drawing, underpainting and adding layers to realistically depict fur and feathers. Yet to put his eccentric spin on each work, he restricts its palette to three main hues—a concept he calls “Kollerism” and defines as “the realistic representation of the form and the abstraction of color.” Represented in Palm Beach by Fritz Gallery, Koller has garnered an international fan base. In May, the artist will exhibit in Frankfurt for the first time, revealing his latest eye-catching creature: an ibex, rendered in purple, yellow and green. Expanding his menagerie for more than two decades, Koller is anything but weary. “You have to find a way to go about creating your art that excites you,” he says. “I’ve found that for myself. I can hardly wait to go into the studio the next day.”

ike a meticulous collector, designer Hillary Littlejohn Scurtis takes a curatorial approach to her work. “I am very disciplined, and I don’t like random objects that have no narrative,” she says. “If something doesn’t speak to the function of the room, I take it out.” It’s a strategy that proved crucial for her latest project, a French Provençal-inspired estate in South Florida that called for an interior design refresh. The client, a world traveler who grew up in Kenya, had developed a taste for the exotic. Boasting authentic French details, the home was originally created by architect Bill Taylor and residential designer Phyllis Taylor. “The rough textured Florida keystone on the front of the house is similar in color to houses in the south of France,” Bill Taylor points out. Inside, Phyllis Taylor incorporated diverse elements acquired during a trip to Paris, including elaborate fireplace mantels sourced at a flea market and architectural salvage stored in warehouses. “The antique paneling in the library was a lucky Internet find,” she adds. “And features like the kitchen’s tiled barrel vault and the office’s tin ceiling were important components for the ambience of each space.” Working with designer colleagues Patricia Duran and Susana Kempen as well as general contractor Patrick Lee, Scurtis was tasked with editing the home’s opulent look and giving it purpose. “It couldn’t be decoration for decoration’s sake,” she notes. “And the most important thing was to make this palatial home feel cozy.”

Scurtis began by looking up and down—at lighting and rugs. A Baccarat chandelier in the main living area, for instance, led to the introduction of a second one in the dining room, where the washed faux-wood paneling was an unfortunate shade of peach. “The room was impressive and intimidating, so to make it more elegant we painted the woodwork dark green—like a London supper club—and added an emerald rug featuring a massive leopard on it for a bit of fun,” Scurtis says. The piece rests beneath the owner’s sizable wood table surrounded by antique chairs. A zebra rug, meanwhile, adds a note of playfulness to the mosaic tile flooring in the office. Sunny and airy, the space is minimally styled with new ivory-colored barrel chairs and the owner’s understated antique desk, allowing the ornate tin ceiling and French-style gold chandelier to take center stage.
A similar idea prevails in the family room, where the team stripped the dark blue ceiling beams and let the client’s rainbow-beaded chandelier come into focus. “A huge set of windows in the room looks out to a canal, so the water and chandelier became our palette guides,” Scurtis says. The trio peppered the off-white sofa with pillows in various textiles and added a rug with an indigo motif. As a final touch, framed Hermès scarves pop against the room’s new white-paneled walls. The designers lined the family room’s bar with shagreen leather stools and placed a few more within view. “They’re repeated as counter stools in the kitchen, so there’s a connection from one space to the next,” Duran explains. There, the owner requested a display of art and objects, but Scurtis insisted they be related to culinary purposes. To compromise, she says, “We celebrated his heritage with African pottery and hung beautiful dishes on the walls.”

A nearby corridor connects to the main spaces, and to underscore its prominence, Scurtis lined a wall with mirrors as a nod to the Palace of Versailles. “The homeowner is in the hospitality industry, so he wanted his living spaces to recreate the attention to detail so prominent in his hotels,” Duran says. Along the mirrored wall, the designers placed a black settee to enjoy views of a courtyard it faces—one of the nontraditional ways they considered the client’s love for entertaining. “That hallway is so wide, I thought: What if you had a moment when you break away from the cocktail party where you could sit and enjoy the view?” Scurtis says. “You could have a cocktail party in the courtyard and move to the kitchen for dinner, where the food and prep provide entertainment and theater.”
But when it’s time for relaxation, the master suite is an ideal respite. In a clever move, Scurtis relocated a bed from a guest room—a better fit for this space—and paired it with an ivory-colored sofa. To balance the tone of the traditional wallcovering, the team sourced a contemporary rug featuring abstract lines. And in the master bathroom, they added practical elements like a cozy chair and a blue cotton dhurrie rug near the freestanding tub. By the project’s end, the combined taste of homeowner and designer helped transform the house, ushering it into the future. “His opulent aesthetic and my edited approach work well together,” Scurtis says. “Ultimately, it became a dance we did very well.”

fter years spent considering children, pets and resale value above their own wishes, a newly retired New Jersey couple was excited to finally create a home just for the two of them. This time, nothing was off limits, whether it meant covering a ceiling with a dramatic wallpaper, deploying their favorite shade of blue in every room or embracing white upholstery. “We felt free to do things you might not do earlier in life when you’re moving around and have children and a dog,” the wife says, pointing to her first-ever cream-colored sofa. Drawn to the beauty of Vero Beach, the couple acquired a property on Orchid Island, a small barrier island between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. The setting overlooking a golf course was ideal, yet the old-world Tuscan-style architecture—columns, arches and peach walls galore—needed a makeover. To helm the transformation, the couple hired designer Melanie Bock, who is known for putting a modern spin on classic style. “What drew me to Melanie was that she didn’t expect me to get rid of everything I owned and start from scratch,” the wife says, explaining she wanted to incorporate some pieces from her family home, including treasured antiques. luxesource.com / 255

In addition to showcasing the picturesque views of a lake and golf course, Bock was asked to create a coastal look sans the typical kitsch. “I wanted the home to feel like Florida without papering the walls in pink flamingos,” the wife says. And though her taste has always tended toward Colonial style, this time, Bock says, “She wanted to move away from the traditional without going completely contemporary.” Before diving into the decor, Bock teamed up with general contractor Randy Read, who encountered a few unexpected challenges: All the plumbing had to be replaced, and a troubling stain on the ceiling meant the house needed a new roof. After tackling those projects, they set about enhancing the home with a few understated architectural details—including wainscoting, wallpaper and crown molding—and incorporated fresh,
new materials such as quartz countertops in the kitchen, white dolomite stone in the master bathroom and wirebrush oak flooring throughout. “The workmanship in this home is phenomenal,” Read says. “I’m pleased with how it came out.” Once the renovations were complete, Bock began creating the casually elegant interior her clients craved. To complement the golf course views, she chose sheer curtains to frame the bank of French doors in the living and dining areas. A mostly neutral palette of cream and brown, tied together with hits of the couple’s favorite blue, imparts a light, airy vibe that defers to the view. “The wife owns a lot of Royal Copenhagen dishware from her family, which I used as a jumping off point for the palette,” the designer explains. hydrangea on a console here and lining an antique china cabinet there. “Then I layered in different shades of blue in different textures,” Bock says, noting a navy wool rug in the study and hand-blocked pillows on the family room sectional. She kept the rest of the palette neutral, allowing the blues to stand out against creamy sofas and crispwhite bed linens. To add complexity, a darker tone comes through the clients’ antique wood pieces, which include a drop-leaf table in the family room, a Sheraton writing desk in the master bedroom and twin four-poster beds in a guest room. Bock reinforced the much-desired beachy feel through splashes of natural texture. She introduced a printed grasscloth wallcovering in the foyer, placed seagrass and wool rugs throughout and hung linen curtain panels in the family room. “These elements added a fun, light touch—a little
bit of whimsy,” she says. And nowhere is that whimsy more apparent than in the husband’s study, where wallpaper depicting a sprawling old-world map covers the ceiling in tribute to his passion for travel. As for the wife, Bock deftly modernized her traditional tendencies by updating the couple’s classic pieces. A lacquered four-drawer chest in the family room received a hand-rubbed waxed finish, while the interior of an old china cabinet was wallpapered. In a guest room, a wing chair was re-covered in a fresh, striped fabric. “Melanie heard our preferences and created a style that differs slightly from our historical choices but still reflects our personalities,” the wife says. And that extra little push paid off. Looking around the residence, she says, “The decor is relaxed without sacrificing style. Being in this house makes us happy.”
