Neolith® is an architectural skin capable of dressing up any interior or exterior commercial or residential space where it’s applied from floors and walls to kitchen countertops, facades and even furniture. The large format minimizes the number of joints in cladding for decorative and hygiene benefits. The minimal thickness allows it to be directly applied to an already existing surface without the need for prior removal.

It’s a low-maintenance material given its special resistance to scratches, stains, chemicals, high temperatures and traffic. Neolith® also provides the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality given its unlimited possibilities and capacity to resemble all-natural materials like stone, wood and metal. WHERE STYLE LIVES

NEXT STOP: ATLANTA MARKET

EVERY JANUARY AND JULY, DESIGNERS AND RETAILERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY COME TO ATLANTA MARKET SEARCHING FOR INSPIRATION AND SOURCING FROM MORE THAN 8,000 BRANDS.

Atlanta offers a curated, cross-category shopping experience unlike anywhere else in the country, with dedicated product neighborhoods featuring home decor, lifestyle, tabletop, housewares, accessories and much more. Beyond discovering new products, you’ll find a community of people that shares a passion for quality and originality. Take advantage of educational seminars, trend presentations and networking events, all designed to help you take your business to the next level.

What’s New in Atlanta? The AmericasMart campus is undergoing a physical and strategic facelift under the AtlantaNext initiative. Look for remerchandised home floors, enhancing the buying experience for designers and home furnishings retailers alike. The new showroom layout in Building 1 features 130 home decor showrooms on five consecutive floors open year-round, as well as during markets. The new showroom configurations allow for a more centrally located Designer Workspace on the 15th floor. Positioned right off the elevator lobby, the new workspace was conceived by Barbour Spangle Design as a retreat to recharge and escape from the hustle and bustle of market to meet with clients or catch up on emails. The Scandinavian-meets-neo-traditional space will be packed with resources for designers, from open lounge spaces for networking and socializing, to private meeting quarters for presentations or personal focus.

What You’ll Find Artwork from Leftbank Art, Soicher Marin, Grand Image Home and Wendover Art Group. Soft goods from Eastern Accents, Lili Alessandra, Peacock Alley and Johanna Howard Home. Lighting from Currey & Company, Ro Sham Beaux, Jamie Young Company and Arteriors. Furniture from Palecek, Caracole, Gabby and Made Goods. Floor coverings from Dash & Albert, Loloi, Nourison and Spicher and Company. Decorative accents from Global Views, Dôme Deco, BoBo Intriguing Objects and Port 68. And so much more.

ATLANTA MARKET IS OPEN TO THE TRADE ONLY, JULY 14 – 20, 2020. | REGISTER ONLINE AT ATLANTAMARKET.COM.

RADAR / IN CONVERSATION

Something BORROWED ARCHITECT NINA EDWARDS ANKER SWIFTLY ADVANCES THE CONVERSATION ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH

Leave it to Nina Edwards Anker to design a residence that personifies sustainability. The New York-based architect received her doctorate from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design leading to her acclaimed Southampton project, Cocoon House. Here, Anker opens the doors to her Gold LEED-certified home and forward-thinking approach to the built environment. What was your biggest takeaway from studying in Norway? The minimalist aesthetic really resonates with me. Norwegian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn made structures nestled into the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the little homes set against the vast water and snowscapes. That shaped my attitude as to how architecture relates to nature. Let’s talk about the Cocoon House and its unusual curved shape! I was inspired by a yurt in Vermont. I’m interested in how we can use scientific technologies to do what our ancestors did. One of my favorite times of year in the house is a sunny winter day, sitting in a T-shirt in the living room with no heat on and it’s still so warm. These ancient typologies worked for a reason. Your perspective focuses on affect before effect. The starting point is you have a family member with a health issue—in this case, my son has asthma—and you address that before anything else, so the house is a purely timber ‘breathable’ structure. It’s better for breathability and for the climate in terms of CO2 release. So health and sustainability go hand-in-hand? How we address our spaces in terms of well-being and the environment should be in sync. The orientation of the site, breezes, sunlight, lack of clutter—that’s all wellness. Share another example of a well-designed LEEDcertified building. I love the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. It’s a gateway between the urban and natural landscape. Just because it’s sustainable, doesn’t mean it needs to be overly technical or intimidating. What's next? My book on the Cocoon House launches in August. I’m also working on the Flora and Fauna Extinction Project, making furnishings inspired by plants going extinct in the natural world.

LX_COM31_Radar_InConversation.indd 96

In the hallway of the Cocoon House, translucent colored skylights are designed to enhance the experience in each space. Colors range from vermilion red, signaling sunset and rest, above the master bedroom, to deep yellow, indicating zenith and activity, near the living room.

Paradise FOUND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED RESTORATION, THE SAN YSIDRO RANCH OPENS THE LAST OF ITS DOORS. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TONDRO

The silver lining to nature’s wrath is that it tends to bring out the strength and ingenuity in people— and such was the case when mudslides struck the San Ysidro Ranch in 2018. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, much of the beloved resort was buried under mud when a deluge following the Thomas Fire sent rivers of topsoil down the mountains. For owner Ty Warner and the architects at Appleton Partners—who had collaborated on its historical restoration years prior—the mission was clear. First, revive the property to even greater splendor. Second, protect it for future generations by working in tandem with the topography. “We kind of rebuilt from an earthworks point of view,” explains Ken Mineau, principal and project architect. This translated to using the enormous sandstone boulders that had tumbled down the mountain to buttress the banks of the San Ysidro Creek and the foundations of its abutting cottages—a few of which were rotated away from the water. In an imperative investment, a debris basin above the ranch was enlarged to catch future fall, and 400 mature olive and oak trees were planted to restabilize the terrain. With the landscape reborn, a crew of roughly 250 subcontractors descended each day for a year and a half, intent on reestablishing the same architectural flavor to the damaged buildings. Materials catalogued during their first renovation, such as antique oak floors and limestone slabs, were installed anew as an assembly line of tradesmen worked their way up the creek. “It was a Herculean effort, but it’s back to what it was and that’s a beautiful thing,” Mineau says. “Every rock, every tree, every roof is back in place.” Save for one exception: The boulder that came six inches shy of wiping out the 1825 Old Adobe. That stone will remain alongside the historic landmark, defiant. This season, bringing the revival full circle, the last four creekside cottages reopen, beckoning guests with bird song and a piece of history embalmed with great care. “It’s a healing moment,” notes Mineau. “This particular story is just one of many past and many chapters to come.”

Verdant gardens, groves of olive and citrus trees, and an array of California vernacular guest bungalows distinguish the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Appleton Partners worked to restore and preserve its singular sense of place following mudslides exacerbated by the Thomas Fire.

A NEW WAVE OF CUSTOM HOMES ADDRESSES AN INCREASED APPETITE FOR NATURE-FIRST DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN LEAK

The words “development” and “sustainability” don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a growing number of architects and developers are working to change that perception, and are doing it in a way that connects luxury homebuyers with nature. “The smart use of natural resources in architecture is the key to a better future,” says David Lang, principal at Lang Architecture, who recently designed a lakefront community in Taylor, Mississippi, with this approach in mind. “For buyers, it’s an investment in preserving and protecting the landscape, which furthers a sense of ownership.” At Splinter Creek, the setting takes center stage. Homes on the 650-acre property “minimize human intervention into nature, while maximizing the effects on habitants,” says Lang. Each home—in addition to being crafted with sustainable materials and passive solar techniques—is designed to seem as one with the bucolic landscape. Inspired by nearby barns, Lang composed the handsome, modern structures with materials such as cypress timbers and galvanized metal. “The locally sourced wood will gray as it weathers,” says Lang. “And when it does, it will blend in with the environment.” But that’s not to say “blending” the dwellings means nestling them into the ground. On the contrary, homes sit, at least partly, on stilts and piers. Not only does this give them the appearance of hovering, it minimizes the touch of man on the earth. “It also allows for a great water view,” adds Lang. Experiencing the water and nature is also by design. Large window walls are oriented to the lakes and the volumes are broken up into separate buildings—sometimes connected by a traditional dogtrot, or open-air passage—allowing residents to experience their surroundings as they move through the day. The architect calls the luxurious homes meticulously detailed and refined, but they’re not opulent mansions—most designs clock in at roughly 2,000 square feet. “Although they are generous, especially in the public spaces, they are smaller houses created that way intentionally, so they don’t overwhelm the landscape,” says Lang. “To us, a strong connection with nature and simplicity are the ultimate luxuries.”

LX_COM31_Radar_Buzz.indd 100

Each home at Splinter Creek sits upon 2 to 18 private acres, offering buyers seclusion and an immersion with the raw natural surroundings— the latter of which architecture principal David Lang describes as “a necessity for well-being.”

“I tend to favor color in my interior design work, but my go-to favorite neutral is Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore. It’s crisp and clean.”

“Pratt & Lambert Timidity is my No. 1 choice. My entire New York City apartment is painted in it, including the ceilings. It’s an elusive and beautiful khaki shade.”

“Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball is a true white with just enough warmth. I used it for my design studio and shop. I love that it feels bright, but not too stark.”

–THOMAS O’BRIEN

–SARAH BARTHOLOMEW

“For as long as I can remember, Benjamin Moore White Dove has been a mainstay for designers. It is a classic, soft hue that goes with everything, and we use it constantly for trim and cabinetry.”

“Even when using a base color, it’s important to define the story and point of view. I gravitate toward gray and creamy tones, like Dover White by Sherwin-Williams, to better support surrounding layers of color.”

“Farrow & Ball Pointing is perfect for living spaces. It’s the loveliest soft white that doesn’t read too austere or brilliant. It works well in modern and traditional applications as well as for trim!”

A Zen aesthetic reigns supreme at the new K’Alma Spa in the Victor Hotel South Beach, where soothing crystals and textiles from spa founder Marizza Contreras’ native Peru dot the space. Contreras tapped Bea Pila of B. The secret to glowing skin can be found at Biologique Recherche in West Palm Beach, the first flagship spa in the U.S. by the French skin-care line known for its P50 tonic (think facial in a bottle). Designed by Hungarian firm MH Design, the spa is as gorgeous as you hope your skin will be when you leave. SO MIAMI AERIN MIAMI EDIT

Beauty, fashion, home decor—is there anything Aerin Lauder can’t do? The beauty heiress, who often spends time in South Florida, released a collection of homewares inspired by her visits to the Magic City. The Aerin Miami Edit channels a beachy aesthetic with clear vases in a range of sizes, a bottle stopper that mimics coral, a woven cane backgammon set and decorative boxes. “I have always loved Miami for its rich culture and beautiful beaches,” says Lauder, founder of Aerin. “Our Miami Edit includes timeless and effortless pieces that can be used year-round to entertain in this beautiful city. Some of my favorite pieces include the raffia coasters, the shell appetizer plates, and our candles, which are also great for gifting.” Pieces from the collection can be found at Neiman Marcus, Aerin Palm Beach, Violetas in Coral Gables and Hive in West Palm Beach. aerin.com

How do you curate items for your shop and the homes you design? One of my most memorable experiences was designing the private residence for Prince Albert of Monaco, and now I pay special attention to finding truly extraordinary pieces for my clients’ living spaces. I’ve lived in many different places, including Central Africa and the South of France, so much of my inspiration comes from these beautiful locales. I buy items all over the world, and I like a balance of masculine-versus-

feminine, classy-versus-edgy, and a blend of traditional and contemporary. Why a tea salon? I wanted a place for my guests to relax, and Lenore NolanRyan understood my vision of providing delicious food in a European environment. The teacups and tableware were handselected from various vintage markets while the furniture and the linens are imported from France.

SO MIAMI PHOTOS: COURTESY AERIN. C’EST LA VIE PHOTOS: PORTRAIT, GRACIELA VALDES; STORE:, CHRISTOPHER MATTHEWS.

What’s unique at your store? When it comes to furniture and accessories, I purchase rare finds, such as the hot air balloon currently in my showroom. I saw it in Paris and knew that I had to have it. I traced it back to a small factory in the mountains of France where they specifically make replicas. The same goes for items like the hand-cut chandeliers and eclectic trinkets crafted in Belgium and Eastern Europe.

SKY HIGH ONE THOUSAND MUSEUM WRITTEN BY CHRISTIANA LILLY

Towering above downtown Miami in a swirl of steel ribbons, One Thousand Museum has made quite an entrance. The 62-floor residential tower, a first for the late Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning Zaha Hadid in the United States, is easily recognizable even among architectural standouts like the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Frost Museum of Science. “One Thousand Museum is Zaha Hadid’s embodiment of the Magic City’s bold and vibrant flair,” says co-developer Louis Birdman. “The building has been extremely well received by not only buyers but also locals and visitors who recognize the striking exoskeleton amongst the skyline.” Each floor is home to just one or two residences, including six stunning turnkey residences outfitted by Artefacto, B&B Italia, Roche Bobois, Luxury Living Group and Meridiani. One Thousand Museum also boasts a two-level indooroutdoor spa that opens onto a terrace, an indoor pool, event space, a private rooftop helipad, a multimedia theater and an on-premise bank vault. Says Birdman, “We are honored to deliver an architectural masterpiece by one of the world’s leading talents.” 1000museum.com

OPEN HOUSE Mexican design-and-interiors brand Dupuis, and its sister brand, Becara from Spain, made a grand entrance into the U.S., opening its first stores in the Miami Design District, Shops of Merrick Park and Aventura Mall this past winter. Dupuis (right) effortlessly fuses artisanal and modern Mexican design while Becara offers accent furniture, accessories and unique pieces sourced worldwide. Ever-expanding Italkraft (36 NW 29th St.) now boasts a Wynwood showroom, blending into the artsy neighborhood with works by Brazilian artist Alê Jordão and a 3D geometric mural by Mr. June on the façade. The sleek space shines with the brand’s most luxurious kitchens and closets and lets guests test high-end Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. The feeling of liquid comes alive at Cosentino City Miami Center (3898 Biscayne Blvd.) with the Dekton Liquid Collection by London-based pattern experts Patternity. Inspired by nature, choose from three new surface pattern colors, including Liquid Embers, which is reminiscent of magma; Liquid Shell, which mimics the landscape of the ocean floor; and the cloud-like print of Liquid Sky.

▼ FONTAINEBLEAU MIAMI BEACH If it’s good enough for the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, it’s good enough for us. At the always-glam Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Marzipan Interior Design recharged the iconic Sorrento Tower, where all-suite guest rooms now shine with Art Deco and midcentury modern touches mixed with tranquil seascapes like area rugs that emulate sand rippling below the water’s surface. Leather-embossed steamer trunks serve as minibars while furnishings pay tribute to 1950s Italy. fontainebleau.com

▲ KIMPTON ANGLER’S HOTEL SOUTH BEACH Find true bliss at the reimagined Kimpton Angler’s Hotel South Beach, which offers many ways to stay thanks to a recent build and a collection of four historic buildings that make you feel like you’ve escaped to the Mediterranean. All 132 guest rooms are swathed in cobalt patterns, feature wood headboards that shoot to the ceiling, and wicker and natural elements woven throughout. Live large in two-story villas with elegant spiral staircases or three-story poolside bungalows with a private rooftop terrace and outdoor lounge area. anglershotelmiami.com

▲ THE CELINO HOTEL Iconic Ocean Drive in South Beach has a fresh look thanks to The Celino Hotel, a glamorous mix of old and new properties that includes a new five-story atrium and three original Art Deco buildings. Toronto-based Navigate Design influenced all interior work from the 132 guest rooms—which bounce between sophisticated and playful—to the three restaurants and patio areas for a tropical-meets-Art Deco-modern feel. The property impresses with a glittering, glass-bottom rooftop pool overlooking Lummus Park and a 30-foot mural created by street artist Mr. Brainwash. thecelinohotel.com

BEAUPORT, THE SLEEPER-MCCANN HOUSE, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The provenance of the Sleeper-McCann House reads like a rich design novel. Henry Davis Sleeper, one of America’s first professional interior designers, built his summer retreat along the New England shore in 1907. He filled its rooms with a masterful mix, ranging from hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper to salvaged kitchen doors from his mother’s family’s home. After his death, Helena Woolworth McCann, a fellow collector, purchased the residence and kept much of the design vignettes intact.

HOLLYHOCK HOUSE, LOS ANGELES

Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his first Los Angeles project—Hollyhock House. Named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the floral motif can be found throughout the home. Completed in 1921, it is an early example of Mayan Revival style. In 2015, the estate reopened after a $4.3 million restoration, and in 2019, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first modern architectural cultural site in the United States to earn the accolade.

MIAMI MOMENT VIZCAYA MUSEUM AND GARDENS, MIAMI

Just south of downtown Miami overlooking Biscayne Bay stands the otherworldly Vizcaya estate. Owner and businessman James Deering envisioned the 1920s property as a modern and subtropical interpretation of 18th-century Italian villas. Despite its historical inspiration, the waterfront estate was constructed with modern techniques and technology for the time. Inside, old and new influences merge, such as Baroque and Renaissance antiques paired with works by contemporary artists.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

FINE GRAIN WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

Move over white. Brown is back—think upholstered textiles, painted living room walls and, specifically, kitchens and baths with rich wood elements. While some may flash back to the paneled kitchens of the 1970s, today’s modern interpretation offers warmth and honors the material’s rich hues and patterning. Certain woods, such as walnut, have a beautiful depth to them that can easily cross boundaries between contemporary and traditional design. As shown here, it really shines when paired with other textures and tones.

LUXURIOUS WOOD DETAILS DRESS UP THE HOME’S MOST FUNCTIONAL ROOMS.

3/24/20 4:59 PM

Court Atkins Group Design Director Deborah Van Plew worked with Element Construction to create this natural wood-inspired Bluffton, South Carolina, kitchen. The walnut cabinetry is by Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry from Palmetto Cabinet Studio. Swaim stools pull up to the island across from a Wolf range, while the side countertops are in Fresh Concrete by Caesarstone.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

PERFECT PLANKS

Deborah Van Plew, design director for Court Atkins Group, offers a different perspective on the coastal kitchen for a vacation home in Bluff ton, South Carolina. While still light and bright, the design nixed a traditional white color scheme in favor of beautiful walnut surfaces and dynamic stone accents. courtatkins.com

What elements did you start with? The owner loves green, so the Blue Tides marble appealed to her right off the bat. We started with this material using it on the waterfall island and the full-height backsplashes. From there, the walnut cabinetry offered a warm, organic factor providing just the right complement to the busy stone. The wood really enhances its beautiful green tones. The design is so seamless. There are a lot of intersecting lines here. Instead of hardware, we went for a clean, streamlined aesthetic, but that meant there was no wiggle room for elements to

be off by an inch or two; everything had to align perfectly. We also thought about scale. It was important to carry vertical surfaces like the wood cabinetry to the ceiling for everything to feel integrated and connected. Where are the appliances? The kitchen faces a large great room. I didn’t want anyone to feel as though they were constantly looking into a kitchen but rather just another living area, so we created a galley behind the range. That’s where we tucked all the things you really have to use on a daily basis, including several appliances.

HIGH STYLE

CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK In the nearly 30 years since Christopher Peacock founded his eponymous luxury cabinetry company, he’s seen kitchen trends come and go, but wellmade, straightforward designs will always stand the test of time. For one of his latest projects, the king of quality kitchens walks us through how he

approaches putting together the home’s hardestworking room. peacockhome.com Where do you begin when designing a kitchen? For me, I usually start the process before I’m even inside the space. It’s important to be aware of the detailing, materials and arrangement of the rest of the home so the kitchen design is both cohesive and a natural progression. A big mistake is thinking of this room in a vacuum. Walk us through your approach to the materials. The dramatic stone was the first thing I picked out. I considered it as a piece of art in guiding the rest of the scheme. For example,

the gray and blue cabinetry colors were pulled right from the veining. Walnut has been around for a long time but there’s something about this particular wood that I just love. It brings such depth to a design and can simultaneously feel both modern and traditional. How have kitchens evolved? Today, these rooms are not considered separate spaces. Instead, they often open up to living areas, particularly in cities and urbans developments. Because of this fluidity, I wanted the elements in this kitchen to read almost like furniture: The island, oven and wall cabinetry all become decorative pieces incorporating different materials and colors.

WOODEN WONDER

MARIE FLANIGAN

photos: julie soefer.

In a Houston home, designer Marie Flanigan renovated and reinvented the master bathroom to create a statement space with stunning architectural details. Since the original bath was very dark, the first step was to brighten the room and welcome in natural light. To avoid altering the envelope of the building, she implemented a solarium ceiling allowing sunlight to flood the area during the day through solar tubes on the roof. Additional lighting was also added for a soft glow at night. marieflanigan.com

For bathrooms, especially, Flanigan recommends addressing functionality from the very beginning to ensure space is utilized in the best possible way and appliances or fittings are positioned in areas that flow easily. Although the footprint of this room was not changed, so many more usable areas were added including the vanity, bathtub and kitchenette nook. After the technical, ‘macro’ aspects of the design are decided, Flanigan says she turns to micro details like color, texture and materials. Paneled marble walls create an elegant, subtle focal point and were designed to encase the mirrors and sconces. While green stone slabs were the first-round pick, Flanigan and the client eventually decided on honed Calacatta Bettogli, an elevated and refined option. Walnut elements and unlacquered brass finishes, including wood inserts on the Samuel Heath sink fittings, were also introduced to add warmth and comfort to the bathroom. “Natural tones will never go out of style,” says Flanigan.

This spectacular Houston bathroom, designed by Marie Flanigan alongside Kelsey Grant and Sydney Manning, features Ralph Lauren sconces from Visual Comfort & Co. and an Urban Electric pendant. A Palecek chair completes the vanity area.

An eight-story townhouse offered Westport, Connecticut-based architect Roger Ferris a unique opportunity to design a statement staircase. Twelve feet in diameter and comprised of seamless white Corian cladding with white oak treads, the monumental structure was fabricated as a single piece off-site and in turn, lowered in through the roof. Notes Ferris, “It acts as a reinterpretation of a common feature that is well conceived and artfully executed.” ferrisarch.com

STRENGTH IN SIMPLICITY “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1400s, the mantra has rung true for centuries, echoed in all areas of art and culture, and perhaps none so much as architecture, a field distinguished by thoughtful restraint and fortitude. The next few pages showcase an array of timely architectural inspiration unified by clean lines, powerful function and understated wow-factor. To open the conversation, look no further than this sculptural staircase by architect Roger Ferris—a testament to the enduring dazzle of a less is more approach.

If the view to the courtyard is any indication, a stay in the premier guest room of architect Bobby McAlpine promises to be a singular experience. Located on the lower level of his Atlanta home, the dramatic chamber is flanked on either side by sunken gardens enjoyed via ocular pivoting sash windows fabricated by DQ Ironworks. Aiding in the luminous feel despite its subterranean siting, white plaster walls, ceilings and floors host furnishings of exaggerated scale, such as the 12-foot-long Niermann Weeks table topped with antique French urns. “It was most important to make this room one you’d never forget,” says McAlpine. mcalpinehouse.com

LIGHTNESS of BEING

In the hilltop San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Malcolm Davis Architecture set about pouring daylight into a historic townhome without sacrificing privacy. Rather than punching windows through its side walls, which would have yielded undesirable views, Davis imagined a long, slim skylight punctuated by the building’s freshly exposed wood framing. Notes the architect, “This is such a captivating element because it’s a moment where a modern insertion expresses the original ‘old bones’ of the house. The skylight creates a feeling of warmth and a connection to the outdoors where you wouldn’t expect it.” mdarch.net

Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell were working as architects in Los Angeles when a notion struck: Indoor/outdoor furniture options to their tastes were dispiritingly limited. The duo spent the next year learning to weld and soon after, LAUN, their kicky outdoor furniture line, was born. Shown here, the travertine and copper Chord Daybed—inspired by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels—highlights their dynamic point of view. “We approach furniture similarly to architecture,” says Purnell. “We analyze each piece in terms of materiality, color and texture, and then we synthesize those ideas with more logical form and function requirements.” launlosangeles.com

Pivotal MOMENT

For a home on Miami’s Venetian Islands, Strang principal Alexandra Mangimelli drew inspiration from the strong horizontal lines and deep overhangs of modernist architect Alfred Browning Parker, devising a structure she describes as both “rhythmic and purposeful.” To usher the home’s exterior strength into the sleek interiors, the architect opted for a custom black pivot door of imposing scale. Whether closed or open to 180 degrees, the immersive portal erases the divide between indoor and out, connecting the homeowners and their guests with the interior courtyard, sculptural cistern, and beyond, the waters of Biscayne Bay. strang.design

6 FANCY FRIEZE Plaster has transcended its traditional roots of late, lending gravitas to contemporary, even modern interiors. “We’ve seen a notable upswing of interest in sculptural relief, both figurative and abstract,” says Adrian Taylor, principal of Hyde Park Mouldings, the Long Island studio specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of artisanal plasterwork. “It seems people are realizing anew that the marriage of architecture and sculpture can yield sublime results,” he adds. This custom prototype—a simplified floral frieze for G.P. Schafer Architect—speaks to the medium’s fresh face for the new decade. hyde-park.com

To the right of the entryway, a powder-coated steel spiral staircase fabricated by Northwest Stair & Rail, Inc. weaves to the upper level of the library, which hosts more shelves of books, a comfy, tucked-away reading nook, and a secret passageway to the master bedroom. stuartsilk.com

Prior to designer Mary Frances Young’s arrival, a Manhattan apartment’s crowning feature—namely, a plastered brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling—was shrouded by dark building materials and furnishings. Allowing the architectural envelope to take center stage, Young painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Paperwhite and paneled the floors in crisp white oak topped with a custom Amadi carpet, setting the stage for her airy take on the 19th-century parlor. “The building is a historical ice storage facility with wide hallways and big spaces. My hope was to happily mix the old building bones with new finishes and furniture,” Young notes. youngandfrances.com

Few wall treatments rival the grandeur of marble fluting, an architectural tradition passed down and reimagined for millenia. For a modern spin, consider Pinnacle, new from Artistic Tile, which trades classical fluting associations for CNC-cut triangular grooves— an intriguing contrast against the marbles’ natural veining. Available in three stones—Bianco Dolomiti, Nero (above, left) and Calacatta Gold (above, right) marble—the tiles can read bold and graphic or soft and textural, making them a dimensional addition to interiors of any flavor. artistictile.com

MAKE THE MOST OF THE LAUNDRY ROOM While it might not be the first space one focuses on improving, the laundry room does have a big impact on quality of life and a home’s overall sense of order and tidiness. The Ferguson team has a few key tips for its design. 1

+ Maximize usable areas by designating drawers for linens and detergents.

What is the most important factor in a renovation project? Regardless of the task at hand, it’s probably the experts one works with. Enter, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. As its name would suggest, the company specializes in the most crucial aspects of home—and its renowned teams are ready for walk-ins and appointments alike, in showrooms nationwide. Stocked with state-of-the-art brands, each location is a one-stop shop for appliances, decorative plumbing, whole-home lighting and more. Asked to lend advice to those making selections from its varied inventory, the Ferguson team obliges: “First, gather up your plans, blueprints and measurements. Second, consider your budget. It’s important for staff to understand your goals and vision, but also your boundaries. Third, if you are working with any builders, architects, designers, etc., be sure to bring them along. Finally, show us what inspires you. Pinterest boards, Instagram screenshots, magazine clippings—we want to see it all!”

+ Brighten things up! Select new lighting fixtures and paint the walls a lighter shade. Wallpapers and backsplashes also work well in these spaces.

INDUSTRIAL IS STILL IN This style has been popular for some time now, particularly when it comes to lighting, and it doesn’t look to be disappearing anytime soon. But why is it so beloved? For one, it appeals to a sense of timelessness and history, with shapes that are reminiscent of past decades. There is also something uniquely ambient about the juxtaposition of cold concrete and warm “Edison bulb” vibes.

+ Install a hanging rack for textiles that are better off being washed by hand and air-dried.

+ Upgrade the ever-soessential appliances. The Ferguson team highly recommends LG’s Ultra Large Front Load washer and dryer, which feature Wi-Fi connectivity for remote operation.

As the number of people choosing renovation over relocation grows, homeowners are taking more interest in the particular details of their home. Thus, manufacturers and retailers are focusing on designing products that please in every way. For Padron Flooring & Design Center, that product is porcelain. “It’s our signature offering, and we strive to be the very best provider of it,” says Alisa Padron, the company’s vice president. “It offers both durability and design, so we feel it is the perfect material.” Indeed, households of every affluence, with members of all ages and activity levels, seem to be gravitating toward it. Padron elaborates: “Is there a color they love? Do they have pets or children? Do they love to entertain? These are the types of questions we ask before we do anything else, so as to find the solution that most completely suits their needs.” With a team of material experts who believe in the bespoke approach, Padron creates porcelain perfection time and again.

The act of embarking on a renovation can be an intimidating one. In many ways, this endeavor proves more complex than that of building a home from scratch. The experts at Woolems Luxury Builders understand this—and they fully embrace it. “We are all about deep team collaboration and a fearless approach, which allows us to accomplish what others might not,” says founder and CEO James Woolems, who runs the company alongside COO Gavin Guinan. “At the same time, we recognize, assess and manage risks, and we treat the client’s money like our own. We believe in honesty, integrity and craftsmanship.” They apply all of this to the client’s vision, whether for a new build or renovation, residential or commercial. The Woolems portfolio spans historic homes, sleek condominiums, venues and clubhouses, but a common denominator lies in the level of quality apparent in each final product.

n the construction world, six months is barely the blink of an eye. But that was the timeline interior designer Ellen Kavanaugh and designer Madison Way faced for the renovation of a Palm Beach vacation home for eager clients. The end result—a tasteful nod to British Colonial style tempered with local cosmopolitan flair—demonstrates that these two perform well under pressure. “It helped that we got to partner with a team we know well and trust,” Kavanaugh says, pointing to residential designer Michael Perry and general contractor Chip Valle, who happens to be her husband. (“That has its efficiencies,” she laughs.) It also helped that the Texas clients, whom Perry and Valle had worked with previously, had a clear vision for their Florida getaway. “The husband is a businessman and a quick decision maker,” Kavanaugh says. “Once we had a great design scheme in place, it was all feasible.” The owners desired a British West Indies vibe with an abundance of dark wood and island glamour—none of which the 2008 abode offered. However, Perry says, “The house is on a great lot—just two blocks from the ocean and less than one from the Intracoastal—and has a good footprint and bones.” To ramp up the structure’s style, he added flourishes to the stucco exterior, including light blue shutters, roof outlookers and a new entryway. There, Kavanaugh set the tone with a jazzy palm-frond wallpaper, mahogany front door and marble checkerboard flooring— classic West Indies elements, she notes. From there, Kavanaugh and Perry worked the interiors from the top down. The house had few millwork details, other than drywall ceilings and crown molding, so they injected British Colonial style from above by adding ceiling beams in spaces such as the living and family areas—with one variation. “The clients were very specific in wanting dark floors, beams and moldings,” the interior designer says. “We had to convince them a fresher twist would make the spaces feel light and breathable.” For a more modern take,

“WE CONVINCED THE CLIENTS A FRESH TWIST WOULD MAKE THE SPACES LIGHT AND BREATHABLE.” –ELLEN KAVANAUGH

LX_PB32_HOM_Kavanaugh_12.indd 210

they kept the beams light colored, painted the inside of the living area’s mahogany-framed bookcases pale green and introduced a palm-leaf wallcovering on the living area ceiling. These unconventional touches proved on target for the overall look, especially given the existing contemporary furnishings the owners wanted to incorporate, including a sofa, a dining table, a chandelier and artwork. “After seeing these pieces, we realized a more transitional, eclectic feel was the right call,” Way says. Case in point: the owners’ 6-by-7-foot Hunt Slonem butterfly painting, which could fit only on one living area wall. Because of its size, the pastel hues command attention, “so we took our color cues for the room from that,” the designer says. Departing from the traditional West Indies palette of dark red and blue, Kavanaugh and Way incorporated lavender with light blues in the fabric selection, including patterned armchairs, tasseled pillows and wispy, ocean-inspired draperies. “We love the interesting mix of tones—they are kind of unexpected,” says Kavanaugh, who added handcarved planters chairs and a teak console to underscore Caribbean flavor. “The living area became the core of our palette, tying in all the colors of the house.” Blue tones continue in the kitchen, where the team took down the wall separating the space from the family room to create an expansive gathering area. For clients who love to entertain, they installed two kitchen islands: a utilitarian one topped with marble and a dry one crowned with mahogany “for a warm, inviting surface where people sit and hang out,” Kavanaugh says. With the kitchen and family area combined, she persuaded the owners that the backsplash had to be a showpiece in the large space. Her idea: a cobalt punch of Moroccan fish-scale tiles. “We wanted an updated take on old-school Portuguese tile and stumbled upon these—the clients loved them,” the interior designer says. The feature served as a jumping-off point for the design of the family area, where Kavanaugh and Way layered blue and white patterns, like striped pillows and a barrel chair with a tribal print. The space connects to the pool and back terraces, reworked by landscape designer Keith Williams, who also created a new entryway courtyard where a driveway had been. “Our goal was to freshen up the gardens, make them more organized and less dense, create more functional spaces that relate to the interior and bring more light inside the house,” says Williams, who introduced structure with clusia hedges and added gardenias and jasmine for fragrance. “The interior design is clean and fresh, so that’s how we wanted the landscape to feel.” Despite the tight schedule, the project came together seamlessly. At wrap-up, the husband—in true businessman fashion—did a performance review with each team member, Kavanaugh recounts. “He sat me down and said, ‘Ellen we’ve worked with many designers, but you were the first to really understand what my wife and I like and want,’ ” she recalls. “We got their aesthetic right off the bat. It just clicked.”

T

ropical hues are common in South Florida residences, a palette Nicole Johnson Brown embraces, but she knows restraint is key. “I love color, but I wasn’t sure how to express my passion for vibrancy without it overwhelming the spaces,” she says about designing the Fort Lauderdale house she and her husband, Ian, renovated. Considering her effusiveness toward the palette of soft coral, warm teal and gray-tinged navy that now surrounds her, designers Ivonne Ronderos and Anahi Carrillo brilliantly succeeded in setting the right tone. “I often find myself being moved by the emotion of color and texture in the home as I travel from room to room,” Nicole says. “In each room, there is an undertone of serenity, even in the spaces that are bolder.” That feeling is the result of the designers’ concept for the residence: “Tropical Festival of Life,” an approach that incorporates organic textures and prints as well as abstract island patterns. “The Browns were willing to trust us to create a unique home that reflects their distinctiveness,” Ronderos says. The clients’ directive for a look that embraces their individuality led to decisions such as noteworthy seating, like the family area’s hanging chair and curvy aqua velvet sofa as well as the foyer’s shellshaped plywood chairs—pieces further influenced by the owners’ love of entertaining. “Just how much the Browns were intent on creating a whimsical and welcoming place

for friends was cemented in our minds when they told us they had bought a pimped-out golf cart to drive to local restaurants,” Carrillo says. “After that conversation, we knew it was important to consider the experiential at all times.” Following that lead, Ronderos and Carrillo approached the project in such a way that each space would invite discovery and tell a story. To define the living, family and dining areas, which are all connected and in view of each other, the designers relied on colors, unique pieces and accent moments. A fireplace with a Calacatta gold tile surround is the standout feature in the living area. The hanging chair and eclectic sofa make a statement in the family area. And in the dining area, the duo created a space within a space by outfitting a bar with a rich but playful blue-toned backsplash tile. “We decided that because we were going to go wild, we’d go with color,” Ronderos says. “When you walk into the dining area, it’s impactful because you see the rich blue on the wall. It was always about finding the perfect spots for color with rich texture.” Substantial work was done in the master bedroom, where Ronderos and Carrillo added wallpaper and wood tones to walls. Transforming the space’s open-concept layout, they also created hidden doors that lead to the bathroom and closet. But because of the Browns’ penchant for hosting, the guest room was so highly considered that it was given as much weight as their own bedroom. “I told Anahi, ‘This is the project to go bold,’

because not many people will let us take risks,” Ronderos says. “I wanted to create meaningful spaces, because nothing about the Browns’ story is run of the mill.” Intended to feel like a tropical hotel boutique, the guest room boasts a palm-print wallcovering and a glowing neon pink sign that reads, “The Coconut House,” the moniker the owners have named their home. Near the end of the project, the clients made a lastminute decision to renovate one final room. “I had specific ideas for the way I wanted the kitchen to flow, function and look because I spend so much time there,” Nicole says. She was hands-on in helping design the new Snaidero kitchen, particularly when it came to spatial planning. “Nicole spent time strategizing where appliances should be placed,” Ronderos says. “For instance, she wanted the wine cooler to be more accessible to the outside, so we moved it to the left end of a particular cabinet.” At home in their tropical paradise, the Browns say they don’t have a favorite room in the house. Instead, the overall feeling of escapism captivates them throughout the residence. “We asked Ivonne and Anahi to create a home in which people would feel the happiness of being away from it all, as they would during a perfect vacation,” Nicole says. “It is a beautiful place in which to entertain, as it encourages what I call a barefoot nonchalance that gives us and our friends a place to slow down and take a breath.”

ith its black-and-white awnings and dramatic bronze sculpture at its entrance, Findlay Galleries beckons well-heeled patrons of Worth Avenue to step inside and admire works by artistic greats—think Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and more. But the gallery wasn’t always a staple in Palm Beach. Founded in 1870 in Kansas City, Missouri, it took the foresight of third-generation owner Wally Findlay to expand to the island in 1960. “As Findlay worked with his clients in this charmed town, he understood that Palm Beach was the perfect setting to view and enjoy art,” says Findlay Galleries CEO James R. Borynack. “He also predicted that in time, the ‘season’ would extend beyond a couple of months, and it would be more advantageous to have a full-service gallery.” That move proved successful: Today, the gallery is celebrating 150 years in business, making it the second-oldest in the country, and represents 75 artists and artist estates specializing in Impressionism, European Modernism, L’École de Rouen, L’École de Paris and 20th-century American art. Its influence is recognized worldwide, with locations in New York City and Palm Beach and affiliate galleries in Europe and Asia. Works sold have graced the walls of the White House, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Norton Museum of Art and several French museums, among others. “We believe in the beauty and value of art created by disciplined artists who have honed their craft and utilize their talent and spirit to imagine works imbued with beauty, regardless of the style or period,” says Borynack, who got his start with Findlay Galleries in 1972 as a salesman. Over the years, he moved up the ranks, eventually becoming director and senior vice president. After a hiatus, serving as chairman of Philips North America and a private advisor, he became Findlay Galleries’ CEO in 1997 and acquired the entire company in 1998. Building on the momentum of this milestone year, Borynack’s vision is to continue what has garnered success for more than a century: not kowtowing to trends but working with artists based on “aesthetic merit.” “It is easy to fall prey to the illusion of what is fashionable,” he says. On the horizon is an art book chronicling the gallery’s history as well as special programming in each location. Of particular note, the New York City outpost will return to its original East 57th Street address, where it opened in 1964. “We live our dream every day,” Borynack says. “We have some of the most brilliant and capable associates in the business. Our clients are kind, successful and interesting people who come to us when they are looking to add more joy and beauty to their lives and the lives of their loved ones.”

ot every client advises their designer to push them out of their comfort zone, but that’s precisely what Malcolm and Dorothy “Dusty” MacColl asked of Leah Muller. After raising their children in a traditional home in Massachusetts and settling into an active retirement in Vero Beach, the couple was ready to change up their Florida vacation home—and the designer, known for her coastal modern interiors, was happy to deliver. “The MacColls were looking for something a little edgy,” she says. “Our vision was to reimagine the conventional beach house with a fresh point of view.” The clients discovered an idyllic lot along a golf course that gave the couple the chance to build from the ground up. Wanting a place that would be as comfortable for just the two of them as for hosting visiting family, they engaged architect John M. Brenner and general contractor Matt Barth to create a plan inspired by one they’d done for a nearby residence. Brenner began sketching an Anglo-Caribbean-style home with French doors, hipped rooflines and an open plan on the main floor. “This lot was quite a bit larger and deeper than the one the MacColls saw, which allowed us to develop a grand private courtyard,” the architect explains. “The breezeway provides covered walkways from the auto court, carriage house and main house while framing the courtyard perimeter.” The exterior spaces influenced the interior, Barth adds. “We always try to design for the views,” he says. “Outdoor living is what people come here for.” The project was still on paper when Dusty reached out to Muller about giving the abode a modern beach house vibe, allowing her and project manager Shannon Colkitt to play a key role in selecting hardscapes and materials. “Our designs have clean lines, a fresh look and unexpected

elements, but they’re not austere or cold,” Muller says. “We like to mix in less expensive things, like a found side table, to jazz up the basics.” What the designer calls her “low risk, low impact; high risk, high impact” philosophy is immediately apparent in the foyer. A woven zig-zag rug in a blend of neutrals and ocean blue rests on a limestone floor that sets the coastal tone, while the metal ribbon chandelier overhead announces the decor is anything but business as usual. The theme continues in the kitchen and the living, dining and family areas—connected gathering spaces ideal for hosting friends and family. A beachy spirit is felt through natural textures, such as rift-cut oak shelves in the living area, hand-woven rope dining chairs and a kitchen backsplash mosaic of travertine and marble. Against crisp white walls— a departure from the MacColls’ previous home—Muller and Colkitt introduced a seaside palette of sandy hues with hints of blues, greens and greige, including neutral-colored sofas with blue striped pillows. Where the walls aren’t white, however, they are patterned— and boldly so. In the guest suite, the designers decked out a bedroom in a whimsical tropical-fish wallpaper and lined the bathroom in a terra cotta and white chevron-print wallcovering. Other pattern play occurs on pillows, none of which are solid colored. The atmosphere calms in the master bedroom, which Dusty asked Muller to make “a quiet place.” She responded with elements such as a pale green wall color, a bench upholstered in a barely-there aqua and an existing dresser repainted a glossy taupe. The palette is also referenced in artwork, which the designers used as another layer to the coastal modern aesthetic. A commissioned piece over the living area fireplace echoes the oceanic hues, while the duo found appropriate homes in the study and a hallway for existing works. Lighting, meanwhile, acts as an additional art form that gives an edge to an expected beach style; the stairwell features a blacksmith metal chandelier, and the kitchen island is illuminated by pendants made of upholstered cotton banding. As refreshing as the interior spaces are, landscape architect August Gerard Schwartz ensured the couple has ample reasons to step outdoors. He designed a garden that can hold up to longstanding enjoyment, deploying artificial turf in high-use areas and installing a putting green. “The entire purpose of the house is to encourage generations to always feel invited to visit, stay and play,” he says. The MacColls are delighted to report their new residence isn’t just a departure from their former homes; it’s also become a favorite gathering place for the family. “My sister walked in and said, ‘Who lives here?’ ” Dusty laughs. “It’s so out of the ordinary for us, and we love it.”
