Furniture: Fully wrapped in nonabrasive primal layers to protect upholstery and delicate finishes, furniture is then packed in soft padding and tough exterior materials for superior protection in transit and storage. Upon final delivery, furnishings are carefully unwrapped and gently positioned by trustworthy, white-gloved hands.

Chandelier: After electrical wiring and chains are disconnected, heavy and delicate chandeliers are carefully lowered by pulley, and each crystal or element is individually wrapped in cushioning materials. It is then hung in a protective crate and secured for transit. The chandelier is meticulously reassembled in its new location.

Art: Wrapped in archival materials or secured in custom-built travel frames complete with Oz Clips™ and a moisture-proof barrier, artworks are properly protected in transit before being securely mounted to the client’s specifications.

BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

INSPIRATION

Eldorado Stone has been at the forefront of its industry for the past 45 years. From its humble beginnings to the international presence it boasts today, Eldorado’s core philosophy has remained the same—believability. Each of the company’s natural ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ Ăƒ Ă€iÂŤ V>ĂŒi` ĂŒ ĂŒ i w iĂƒĂŒ `iĂŒ> Ăƒ v ĂŒiĂ?ĂŒĂ•Ă€i > ` V Ă€] ĂžiĂŒ offers a lightweight, concrete stone veneer solution. VARIABLE OFFERINGS Inspiration is key to Eldorado Stone’s culture. Every product is designed to evoke a unique sense of space, whether modern, traditional or highly rustic. With 150-plus colors and numerous textures and shapes from which to choose, architects and designers are able to inspire their customers with limitless applications.

MODERN DESIGN The newest of Eldorado’s extensive options, the Modern Collection features 34 new colors and 6 new profiles. Developed to accentuate contemporary `iĂƒ } Ăƒ] ĂŒ iĂƒi ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ ÂŤ> Ă€ Ă€iw i` V Ă€ Ăœ ĂŒ V i> iĂƒ ĂŒ L i ` Ă€ V ĂŒĂ€>ĂƒĂŒ with neighboring elements. Eldorado Stone’s philosophy creates authentic architectural products that transform spaces through color and texture.

ARTISANAL CRAFTSMANSHIP Eldorado Stone products are handcrafted through a detail-oriented, laborintensive process. Each stone is hand-painted by master artisans, infusing multiple layers of color to the stone’s unique textured surface to create a highly authentic appearance.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

JOANNA MCCLURE

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

WHO: West Palm Beach native Carley Summers offers us a glimpse into a life well-lived via her colorful Instagram feed. Photographer by trade, artist at heart, her boho-chic snaps give an air of authenticity and delight the eye with candy-colored shades and curated keepsakes. WHAT: Feel interior envy while browsing through #thesummersabode, a hashtag Summers coined for shots of her home. Expect overdyed rugs, found jewelry, woven baskets, rattan furniture, tribal patterns and greenery—her home boasts nearly 100 tropical plants.

IN HER WORDS: “I have the need to create all the time and feel stagnant if I am not using my imagination. I love bringing color palettes together to give life to a shot.”

AUBERGE BEACH RESIDENCES & SPA

In 2017, Auberge Resorts Collection is bringing its signature livable luxury to Fort Lauderdale. The architects at Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates will construct two towers on 450 feet of oceanfront property, containing 171 residences and a world-class spa. In a departure from the ubiquitous glamour of South Beach, the location will epitomize a tranquil island retreat. Inside, the celebrated designers at Meyer Davis Studio will employ an honest, natural palette of materials to act as, in their words, “a celebration of the beauty of the beachfront.” Each unit will feature floor-to-ceiling windows with ocean views, a chef’s kitchen, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, and private elevator access, while a lucky few will boast private pools. aubergebeach.com

THE INSIDER MICHELE OKA DONER

Michele Oka Doner credits South Florida for giving her work a vocabulary. The visionary artist is from Miami—though her work is internationally renowned—and her portfolio covers a range of mediums from sculpture, furniture and objet to set design and public art, like her long-standing installation at the Miami International Airport. “My work evokes primal energy and a sense of timelessness,” muses the artist. With her exhibit going on now at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, “How I Caught a Swallow in Midair,” including pieces from the 1960s to today, Oka Doner shares what’s hot in her hometown. micheleokadoner.com

128 / LUXESOURCE.COM

What is intriguing you about the world of design in Miami at this moment? There is more interest in a sense of place. The buildings and landscapes are paying attention to native plants and materials. The art scene in Miami is vital and exciting, heavily influenced by its position as a hot spot between the traditional European-centric U.S. and Latin America.

Best neighborhood shopping: One of my favorites is True Loaf Bakery in Sunset Harbor; they have the best cookies. I also love Robert is Here in South Dade for its amazing local honeys, with flavors like orange blossom, key lime and avocado. Lastly, the Lincoln Road Antique & Collectible Market is a must-visit on Sundays for all things vintage.

Local artists to watch: I love the work and passionate commitment of sculptor Robert Chambers. His intensity and knowledge of his vernacular is outstanding. Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney also brings a Miami sensibility to the world of theater.

Most excited about now: I’m just off the high of The Miami City Ballet’s 30th Anniversary, of course! They reimagined George Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and I was commissioned to design the beautiful sets and costumes.

INSTACRUSH PHOTOS: HEADSHOT, CATHERINE COONS; VIGNETTES, CARLEY SUMMERS. BLUEPRINT RENDERING: COURTESY MEYER DAVIS STUDIO. THE INSIDER PHOTO: NICK MERRICK.

WHY: Whether it’s images from a recent trip to Morocco or styled vignettes in her light-filled kitchen, Summers has a keen eye for a shot that works, and you’re sure to come away with inspiration.

ARTEFACTO & JADER ALMEIDA

When Artefacto founder Paulo Bacchi came across Brazilian furniture designer and likeminded visionary Jader Almeida, he knew he had met his match. Almeida’s pieces, such as the Isa armchair above, with its curvy silhouette and modern lines, share in the brand’s ethos of simplicity in form. The pair teamed up to bring these pieces to Miami, in a firstever U.S. collaboration, setting up a “shop-in-shop” that now holds a permanent spot at Artefacto’s Biscayne Boulevard location. TALKING SHOP WITH GUIMAR URBINA

THE WALLPAPER COMPANY When did you open up shop? We expanded to our new and improved South Miami showroom located at 7003 N. Waterway Dr. in August 2015. Why did you choose Coral Terrace for your new location? It is an area that we had always targeted and kept an eye on due to its proximity to the highly desirable and designintelligent communities of Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Doral and other neighborhoods in South/ West Miami. We felt that these markets were being severely undeserved, as there is a considerable lack of specialty wallpaper showrooms operating in the greater area. Describe your design and vision for the space. We wanted to create a place in which our customers would feel empowered about their wallpaper decisions and be inspired by all of the offerings on display. What products do you have on the floor? All types of wallcoverings—wallpaper, vinyl, textile, mica, grass cloth and so much more. We carry brands like Donghia, Osborne & Little and Farrow & Ball, to name just a few. wallpapercompanyshop.com

DATE BOOK MICHAEL SAIGER: MIANSAI

South Florida is where Michael Saiger began his foray into men’s jewelry design, happening upon the craft and eventually founding the utilitarian menswear brand Miansai. His initial design, an empty bullet casing strung on a leather cord, was quickly picked up by area clothing boutiques and the rest is history. Although Miansai does not have a storefront in Miami, at their headquarters near the Design District, you can find upwards of 40 artisans crafting these hyper-masculine adornments. The company’s aesthetic matches that of its product: handmade and raw. Each outpost contains a tea bar, perfect for its healthconscious founder who skips coffee in favor of teas and kombucha. This on-the-go entrepreneur spends his time in Miami enjoying the area’s weather and outdoorsy ethos. We tracked down Saiger to share his favorite local stops. miansai.com 2 p.m. There are two galleries that I would check out in Little Haiti: the Yeelen, a modern museum giving a voice to the area’s international ethos, and the super-contemporary and fantastic Gallery Diet.

8 a.m. I’m a big runner; it’s my habitual form of exertion. Miami is a great place to get up and go for a run because you are surrounded by scenic views and ocean breezes. I wake up and run on the Venetian Islands, where I live, with my dog Scola.

the Pérez Art Museum Miami, where you can go to get your contemporary art fix and awe at the architecture of the museum itself. The glass-and-concrete structure is inherently modern and covered with indigenous tropical plants.

9:30 a.m. I always stop at Ten Fruits in downtown Miami to grab an acai bowl or Dr Smood for some clean eating. If I have a bit more time, I’ll hit Sabor a Peru; make sure to get one of its killer ceviches!

1 p.m. Get food on the go from our office go-to, La Sandwicherie, a 24-hour South Beach staple. I always get a turkey sandwich with extra vinaigrette, the restaurant’s coveted dressing that accompanies its offerings.

4 p.m. Start your route to happy hour by way of Biscayne Boulevard. It’s one of my favorite areas in Miami. There is a strip of amazing motels and buildings (from the 1950s) that recall the era’s architecture with a modern, relevant update. The Vagabond Hotel is a prime example of this.

1:30 p.m. Go ahead and take a venture into one of Miami’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods, Little Haiti. Here, the streets are characterized by brightly colored building façades and absolutely incredible street art.

5 p.m. Finally, it’s time to kick back with some of Miami’s see and be seen at The Standard hotel. Nothing compares to the view of the sunset over the bay, except maybe the accompanying cocktail!

10:30 a.m. Time to soak in some of Miami’s burgeoning art scene. I’ll start at Spinello Projects. Something I love most about Miami is its entrepreneurial spirit, and Spinello supports up-andcoming artists with unorthodox portfolios. Another must-see is 132 / LUXESOURCE.COM

IN THE GRASS THE ROMANONES, 1976

The summer solstice is upon us, a time of year so effortlessly captured by the masterful eye of photographer Slim Aarons. His iconic lens conjures the season’s most glorious outdoor pastimes—such as afternoon tea during the golden hour and toes grazing the cool grass, as pictured in the Spanish garden shown—and have incited the following fresh selections. Monaco’s storied beaches have long attracted the überchic, and for good reason: Nothing says summer like a lackadaisical lunch enjoyed seaside. to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

GROW

INTO THE WILD

THE PIECE: Geometric Drum Tables THE DESIGNER: Samuel Amoia FIND IT: itzanahome.com THE INSPIRATION: Contrast is everything when it comes to design, and here, the collision of French Deco influences employed by Belizean artisanal techniques have resulted in a subtle impact of beauty and strength.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.

MONICA KHEMSUROV AND JILL SINGER

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS SIGHTUNSEEN.COM

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

RACHEL BENTLEY AND CARLY NANCE

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS THE-CITIZENRY.COM

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

FLORA FLAUNT THE PIECE: Twig Branch Table THE DESIGNER: George Massar for Gregorius Pineo FIND IT: gregoriuspineo.com; hollyhunt.com THE INSPIRATION: As if rooted to the ground in which its placed, the Twig Branch table is lively and playfully complex, assembled of composite stone to make it agreeable both inside and out.

GROWTH SPURT THE PIECE: Domicile G Stool THE DESIGNER: Michael Vanderbyl FIND IT: bolierco.com THE INSPIRATION: Eliciting notes of midcentury modern design with an inflection on African folk art, the Domicile G stool is a mellifluous blend of contemporary and traditional cultures.

ANNA BOND

ARTIST AND PRODUCT DESIGNER RIFLEPAPERCO.COM

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

176 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

PHOTOS: LISA COHEN.

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 178 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

NATURAL

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

SET THE TONE SERENA & LILY

No dinner party is complete without pretty table linens. Fine textiles can transform a table from casual to formal and back again, adding an element of the tailored and well-planned to even the most impromptu gathering. Here, Serena & Lily’s Jewel napkin joins the Chatham napkin and runner and the brand’s raffia placemat and Cove rattan lantern in a dreamy coastal-inspired tablescape. serenaandlily.com 182 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

COURT OF APPEAL

THE DESIGN TEAM: Interior Design / Dufner Heighes Inc. Home Builder / Sarkela Corporation Landscape Architecture / Big Orange Landscaping THE CHALLENGE: Renovate a Spanish Colonial vacation home in Fort Lauderdale for a couple with four children. Designers Daniel Heighes Wismer and Greg Dufner knew exactly what they were in for. “We’d worked with these same clients on eight or nine homes over the past 15 years, in California, Northern Michigan, Chicago and New York,” recalls Wismer. “This is their Florida incarnation.” THE WORK: Situated on a tranquil peninsula along the Intracoastal Waterway, the house was already blessed with striking water views on three sides and established landscaping. Wismer and Dufner slightly modified the exterior, including removing extraneous ornamentation. Along with Big Orange Landscaping, the duo tweaked the existing landscape, keeping it as minimal and natural as possible. “We cleared out the excess foliage and amplified the volume of the healthiest, most vibrant plants,” Dufner says. They also refreshed the courtyard with more uniform stonework and decorative tiles. THE RESULT: Overall, the home reflects the owners’ waterside lifestyle as well as the purity of their taste. “It’s contemporary, and with a great connection to the water,” says Wismer. “It really is a family affair.” 188 / LUXESOURCE.COM

THE CHALLENGE: Captivated by a lush sprawling lot in South Miami that was dotted with towering old-growth oak trees and an original home that no longer stood, a couple with three daughters set out to build their own sanctuary. “This property has the most incredible trees and foliage, so a priority was having the largest windows possible,” says designer Charlotte Dunagan. “They wanted something that was welcoming, fresh and accessible.” THE WORK: Enter architect David Wearne Johnson, who specializes in designing modern homes in the Old Florida style, with prominent front porches and wraparound verandas. He drew up plans for an expansive home that would artfully tuck into the oak trees.

To ensure the foliage would be safe as construction began, landscape architect Michael Sapusek helped site the building. He created a trellised pergola and sitting area by the main swimming pool and spa, and meandering paths on the property, so the kids can tool around on their bicycles. To further enhance the backyard’s tropical feel, Sapusek added plenty of greenery, including date and coconut palms. THE RESULT: The site’s existing landscape was supplemented with citrus trees, palms and flowering vines, and the design team experimented with several exterior paint colors to achieve the perfect shade. “There’s no fluff to this home,” notes Dunagan. “It has a very sophisticated and understated elegance.”

THE ASSIGNMENT: A couple looking to downsize from their former 15,000-squarefoot mansion on Biscayne Bay’s Star Island were drawn to a patch of land in Miami Beach because of its infinitely charming 1930s coach house, which had been designed by Russell Thorn Pancoast, one of the city’s founding architects. They hired architect and builder Zeb Jarosz to erect a humbler structure that would, nevertheless, retain a certain level of sophistication. THE WORK: The arched pool house was built first and set the tone for the Mediterranean Revival structure of the main residence. Inspiration and decisions

flowed naturally from the coach house, which determined materials: stucco, keystone (local coral stone) and pecky cypress. The outdoor area features painted frescoes by Miami-based artist Ruben Marangone, along with Star and Dolphin seating crafted from hand-welded cast aluminum gathered around a shellstone table. Creeping vines and shell motifs abound. THE RESULT: “Ornament is simplified and expressed in the Florida vernacular,” says Jarosz. “The minimal monochromatic setting, whose spaces telegraph a kind of monastic hush, are more quiet, more 21st century.”

GREEN SCENE As summer descends, more than just perennials are coming to life again: With the longer days and warmer weather, homes across the country are beginning to bloom, unfurling out into handsome outdoor spaces and onto beautifully manicured lawns. It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. On the following pages, go green with some of the season’s prettiest outdoor living spaces.

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

THRILL OF THE

CHAISE

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

TAKE SHELTER

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

What truly makes outdoor spaces exceptional isn’t just natural beauty; though, it’s hard to think of a more serene scene than a private pool secreted away behind extra-tall hedges, like in this handsome setting designed by Los Angeles’ Schuyler Samperton. DESIGN-SAVVY NEW YORKERS GIVE IN TO THE LURE OF PALM BEACH AND PLANT THEIR TROPICAL ROOTS FIRMLY ON THE SHORES OF THE INTRACOASTAL. WRITTEN BY LINDA HAYES / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA KLEWICKI GLYNN

S

waying palms, glistening waters and gleaming sunshine sound like a vacation. For Tami and Bruce Watkins, it’s become their everyday, as their affection for Palm Beach has grown so much so over the years that they sold their home in New York City and moved south full time. “We increased our footprint little by little,” shares Tami. “We rented seasonally at first, then bought a condo, and then a house on Ibis Isle.” Eventually, a lot across the street called to them, offering a prime location to build anew on the waterfront. A search for an architect on the AIA website led them to Clem Schaub, whose firm is known for designing tropically influenced homes with an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living. “My interest in design began in my teens and continued with my degree in architecture from the University of Virginia,” Tami says. “Bruce and I share a similar aesthetic and we both had a very positive reaction to Clem’s design philosophy and his calm manner. We met and hired him on the spot.” Looking into the local building guidelines, Schaub found that the neighborhood’s codes allowed for building closer to the water than in other areas, which meshed with everyone’s plans. “The owners didn’t own a boat, but they wanted to create a sense of being on one, of seeing water from every room and not being aware of the land,” says Schaub, who collaborated with associates Cindi Bournique and Tatiana Sanchez on the architecture. “Our idea was to use the orientation and view to direct how the plan would evolve.” Utilizing allowable dock space enabled the design of a very large cantilevered deck over the water—a feat that builder Tim Givens recalls as a welcome challenge. “It was interesting to create a deck/dock as an extension of the living room and meld it into the same elevation as the house,” says Givens, enlisting the help of project superintendent Saul Irving. “Building close to the seawall from a construction standpoint meant considering site drainage and dealing with the logistics of being pinned up against the wall and not having a backyard to work around.” This also meant doing more work by hand. Material-wise, what Schaub refers to as a modern version of a British West Indies cottage translated very simply to the locale. “When you’re doing tropical houses, outdoor materials become indoor materials and vice versa,” he explains. With that in mind, the exterior palette was set to include neutral, integral-color stucco walls

accented with painted-wood trim and punctuated with operable wooden jalousie doors, a Jamaican detail Schaub “reinvented” with the help of a local millworker to function as a cooling system and control the amount of breeze flowing through the house. Woven, no-hip-ridge roofs, also borrowed from Jamaican design, topped off the home’s series of interconnected pavilion-style spaces, which are paved with limestone. The same, or similar, materials are repeated in the interior lime-washed Western red cedar ceilings, window trim and flooring, as well as the extensive decking and courtyard swimming pool surround. With strong ideas of bringing along certain favorite pieces from their previous house, Tami called on close friend and New York-based designer Rose Aiello for the furnishings plan. “Tami and I have very similar tastes and had worked together on many previous projects,” says Aiello, who worked with associate Dianne Garda on the interiors. “I weighed in on items that were in the shell of the home— helped with the placement of existing pieces such as the large round dining table, and aided in the selection of fabric to reupholster others. I also shopped for new pieces in New York.” To best capture the omnipresent views, Aiello oriented the living room furniture outward, including a pair of new white sofas and cocktail tables. There, as well as in the connected guesthouse and outdoor living pavilion, accent colors were inspired by Tami’s love of blue. “It started with an iridescent pillow on the sofa and ranged from turquoise to deep midnight blues, like all the different shades of water,” Aiello explains. The bedrooms depart from the blue theme, with artwork and soft goods such as throws giving splashes of yellow and green. Anchoring the home, so to speak, is the ample kitchen. “It’s acting as a hinge pin,” says Schaub, “opening onto the entry courtyard, an outdoor breakfast area and the dining room.” Tami, a hands-on cook, loves to entertain and takes full advantage of the cabinetry and island system, designed by Schaub, to which Aiello added mirrored backsplashes and teak counter stools that mimic the outdoor dining chairs. An upper level houses an office and art studio that can potentially be used as bedrooms. Further settling the house into its surroundings is the subtle yet striking landscaping, organized by landscape designer Neil Sickterman. “The sensibility of the project was modern and minimal,” he says. “We also aimed to create impactful experiences as you enter various spaces throughout the site. For example, the entry courtyard features tall site walls, a simple green island ficus groundcover and substantial canary date palms.” Keeping in mind both the summer-like setting and the harsh planting conditions the waterfront creates, he specified a simple, unfussy groundcover, intermingling the waterside deck with beds of natal plum boxwood beauty. Reflecting on the finished product, Schaub is pleased with how well the initial concept of connecting with the water worked, literally and experientially. “When the tide is up and moving, it feels like the house is moving, like you’re in a boat in the living room,” he says. And Tami wouldn’t want it any other way. “No matter where you are,” she says, “there is privacy and a feeling of tranquility.”

Establishing the overall mood of the house, the entry offers the first glimpse of the water. The landscaping was installed by Efflorescence— bougainvillea vines on the walls grow with the rhythm of the jalousie doors, and canary date palms create a strong statement of arrival and provide shade for the intimate courtyard. The entry lights, custom-designed by architect Clem Schaub, were crafted by Shadetree Studio.

WILD AT HEART FLORAL DESIGNER HALLE FREY DISHES ON THE ART OF HER UNINHIBITED APPROACH WHEN IT COMES TO CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS, DIVULGING HER RECIPE FOR THE PERFECT BOUQUET. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA LORREN

LUXESOURCE.COM / 225

From her studio inside Uptown Art in West Palm Beach (opposite, right), Halle Frey (right) creates whimsical arrangements using glass vessels and florals like tulips, ranunculus, roses, Queen Anne’s lace, hanging amaranthus, olive branches and moss. The ribbon station (bottom) is used for bouquets and boutonnières; she considers this the “fringe” part of her design studio.

T

he tight, wispy petals of ranunculus, the delicate frame of a garden rose, the strength of a protea, and the free spirit of a wildflower—these extraordinary flora are in many ways nature’s pièce de résistance. They also happen to be the muse and medium for West Palm Beach floral designer Halle Frey. “Two words that I hear most often from my clients are whimsical and eclectic,” she says. “This reputation definitely stems from my own personal style. I like to keep flowers in their natural form and add something unexpected at the same time.” Armed with her apron, clippers and rescue pup Daisy Mae by her side, Frey established Flower and Fringe, a bespoke floral boutique nestled in a creative enclave where imagination runs rampant and arrangements resemble works of art. Surrounded by buckets of fresh-cut greens and blossoming blooms, Frey divulges her recipe for the perfectly balanced bouquet: primary, secondary, filler and greenery. “With statement flowers,” she says, “you need to make sure they stand out—a very similar concept to interiors and art.” In fact, Frey attributes much of her playful whimsy to her artistic background. “I originally studied fashion and design,” she adds, “and art quickly became a huge influence in my career trajectory and has remained a constant.”

226 / LUXESOURCE.COM

When asked about her creative process, Frey explains that her effortless style often happens on a whim, without rhyme or reason, but evolves through instinct. “I love when I see a vine growing up a wall,” she notes. “It’s not forced or coerced—it just happened that way. In this vein, if a flower is curving to the left, I play off of that. It’s not something I can completely articulate; I just know when it feels right.” This intuition has led her to acquire successful partnerships with top hotels and keeps her client roster brimming. Inspired daily by the creative community around her and with an eye trained to spot subtleties not recognized by all, Frey can often be found exploring local talents. “There’s nothing better to me than grabbing a coffee, popping into décor haven Hive, and then spending the rest of the afternoon strolling in and out of Worth Avenue’s little vias,” she says. “I feel like I have a little slice of Europe right here in South Florida. And what’s more inspiring than that?”

ANCHORS AWEIGH A FRENCH CANADIAN COUPLE TRADE IN THEIR BOAT SHOES FOR A FORT LAUDERDALE CONDO THAT MIXES VINTAGE AND CONTEMPORARY FURNISHINGS AND ART. WRITTEN BY ANNA KASABIAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILIO COLLAVINO

INTERIOR DESIGN / JOSEPH C. FAVA, FAVA DESIGN GROUP

U

ntil recently, a French Canadian couple looked forward to spending a month or so on their yacht in Fort Lauderdale to escape the winter’s wrath. It had been the perfect plan for 14 years, until one day—while cruising along the Intracoastal Waterway—they spotted a condominium, complete with a dock, for sale. Within a few months, they had purchased their new residence and began the adventure to make it their own. “We already knew the area and wanted to spend more time here,” the husband says. “Our priority was the view and the proximity to the ocean, a five-minute walk away. The residence is in a very nice locale, close to restaurants and shopping, which we enjoy. And it gives us the space we need to accommodate our children and grandchildren, as well—also our priority.” The one aspect that did not suit their taste was the interior. So they began a quest for someone who would understand their vision and were won over by interior designer Joseph C. Fava’s collaborative approach. “Clients hire us to utilize our expertise to fine tune their vision,” says Fava. “With this couple, it was clear from the beginning what they were looking for, and the fine-tuning came into play as we took shopping trips together and presented ideas.” The overall concept was to create a space where the fabrics and wallcoverings were neutral and where color would come from both the art and the breathtaking water views. “We wanted a contemporary atmosphere, refined in natural shades with a warm appearance,” says the wife. There was just one hurdle the three had to overcome: Fava does not speak French nor are his clients particularly fluent in English. “In the beginning, there was a lot of pointing,” muses Fava, noting this just made for a more interesting, enjoyable exchange. Fava worked on the project over the course of two years, which included five months of downtime while the couple tended to business commitments in Canada. “They own a chain of grocery stores, and they were expanding the business at the same time we were renovating their new home,” he says. Originally, the plan was to make only cosmetic changes to the rooms and bring in furnishings and art. But once new marble flooring tiles were installed throughout, the dated elements became really noticeable. Plans soon changed, and the kitchen was added to the list of major renovations, as were the master and guest bathrooms. Fava designed these changes with Stephane L’Ecuyer from IDEA serving as the architect of record.

“THE HOMEOWNERS REQUESTED A SLEEK AND MONOCHROMATIC SPACE, USING COLOR THROUGH ACCESSORIES AND ART.” -JOSEPH C. FAVA 230 / LUXESOURCE.COM

The 3,500-square-foot residence sits on one level with a massive rounded-glass wall running more than 100 feet and offers painterly water views from nearly all of the 13 rooms. The master bedroom and bathroom sit in a separate area off to the left as one enters, and the other rooms are off to the right, including two other bedrooms, a den and a home office. “The previous look of the home was neoclassical with lots of black lacquer moldings,” Fava explains. And since the main public rooms—living and dining areas and kitchen—all open up to each other, it became even more obvious that the kitchen had to blend in with the roomscape, as well. Today, a lustrous island and backsplash along with taupe lacquer cabinetry present an elegant, sleek and minimalist kitchen that works perfectly with the new design. Weaving unusual pieces into the great room, such as a vintage metal sculpture on the wall, made for an eclectic, visually interesting space. “The homeowners requested a sleek and monochromatic design, using color through art and accessories,” Fava says. “Due to the open floor plan, we specified taupes, grays and walnuts throughout to keep a cohesive aesthetic, and selected everything together, including the art.” For example, a vignette was created in the vestibule leading to the office to showcase a quirky piece by Canadian artist Raphaëlle Séguin. Another major renovation came in the master bathroom. Wrapped in cream-and-gray polished marble, it’s an elegant and subdued space. The walk-in shower enclosed in a seamless glass box, a wall of mirrors fronted by creamcolored lacquered cabinets and an oversize tub all make for a mini-spa within the master bathroom. A lush earth-toned rug adds another level of comfort, as does the vintage Lucite-and-chrome bench. Leather and suede furnishings, including the sofas in the living area and den, as well as the bed in the master bedroom, were chosen for their no-fuss functionality and comfort. “The owners wanted something sleek and durable that could even withstand grandchildren in wet bathing suits,” Fava says. The living area’s coffee table with a reclaimed-wood base and the nearby walnutveneer walls give the contemporary space an organic feel. When wallpaper was chosen over paint for select rooms, Fava favored designs by Phillip Jeffries, Atrium and Romo, which wrap the walls of the foyer, office and guest bedroom and bathroom, respectively. For the dining area, the low-backed sculptural chairs and clean-lined concrete table allow the immediate water views to take center stage. “We wanted something industrial and loved the lines of this table,” says Fava. “To soften the space, we used white leather chairs with walnut legs to tie in with the wood walls.” The designer’s decision to have sheer draperies sheath the glass wall helps reduce sun glare without losing the essence of the view. Recessed lighting, sconces and chandeliers bring direct light to specific areas, and the absence of table lamps keeps the look clean. Fava’s sculptural lighting choices add yet another level of art to the space. Being on the first level with the clients’ own outdoor space makes this feel like a private home, which suits them just fine. “Now that we live here and love living here,” the husband says, “we are thinking of selling our boat.”

Bold color draws the eye to a vignette in the living area that was created as a work space. ituated amid the collectors’ mecca of Antique Row in West Palm Beach, Mecox sets out to create a statement all its own. The furnishings-and-design shop bursts with a colorful combination of reproductions and antiques with original works by local artists peppered throughout for an everchanging sensory experience. Mac Hoak—who founded the company 20 years ago and sets the guiding tone for each location across the country— has entrusted Katie Ellinger and Kendall Rubins with the creative freedom to make the West Palm Beach store shine in its own individual way. “We want our clients to feel elated and inspired as they make their way through our shop,” Ellinger says. Ellinger and Rubins both date their fascination with design back to childhoods graced with creative mothers and the constant remodeling and redecorating of bedrooms and dollhouses. Today, the two have woven a collaborative web, one made stronger thanks to the special relationships and even friendships they’ve forged with local artists, who are often featured in gallerylike events or at larger-scale functions like the Historical Society of Palm Beach County’s annual Evening on Antique Row. “These artists often do custom pieces for our store or commission work for a client orchestrated through us,” Ellinger says. The duo’s passion for individuality and discovery is evident at every turn within the shop. “You’re going to find pieces here that you won’t find anywhere else and that are certainly interpreted in a unique way,” Rubins says. Designers, local residents and visitors alike have come to rely on the unexpected twists of style and staging that await them. “We are not afraid of color,” says Ellinger, noting all seven locations routinely share ideas with one another. “We also really listen to what our clients need and keep that in mind while we’re buying and sourcing products from around the world. Everything is mixed together in a seamless and colorful way, which has become the Mecox look.”

Katie Ellinger (opposite, right, at left) and Kendall Rubins constantly change the feel of Mecox in West Palm Beach with finds from all over the world, such as Christopher Spitzmiller lamps (bottom left) and vintage porcelain (bottom right). The black-and-white painting (left) is by local artist EEK, and the colorful works also shown bottom right are by Vermont artist Idoline Duke.

Right: The renovation saw the creation of a new mudroom and a cabana room that accommodates the family’s love of water sports. Opposite: The foyer has a fresh coastal vibe, with soft hints of color seen in both the art and a turquoise bench. The flooring, from Contemporary Hardwood Floors, evokes beach sand along with a Fibreworks rug from Flor Source. A Restoration Warehouse lantern from Candelabra hangs from above.

hen Lyn and David McCarthy’s friends and family saw the vacation home they found in Tequesta, several had the same reaction: “Are you crazy?” Built in the 1950s as a weekend getaway for a Palm Beach doctor, it had seen better days. The tired-looking brick house had overgrown landscaping outside and, although the home overlooked the Loxahatchee River, its inner architecture obscured the views. “If you could see past all of that, the house was beautiful and the location was phenomenal,” Lyn says; it was situated on a choice part of the river, with manatees and dolphins often frolicking near the dock. So, the couple enlisted residential designer Dennis Rainho, designer Jackie Armour and builder Dan Reedy to determine whether the house was salvageable. “It was well-built and had some good architecture,” Reedy says. “We made an assessment that this 1950s home was worth keeping.” 248 / LUXESOURCE.COM

The McCarthys, who primarily live in New Jersey, have friends in Tequesta and imagined a vacation house for themselves, their two kids—both in college—and their extended family. “David is one of six siblings and there are 16 kids among them,” Lyn says. “We love to have everybody around.” Unfortunately, the home’s choppy interior spaces weren’t designed for 21st-century entertaining. “When this house was built, it was compartmentalized to separate the staff quarters,” Reedy explains. The couple instead wanted a casual, coastal-looking home with a more open flow between the kitchen and living spaces. Rainho told them, “With some changes to the exterior, we can get close to that style, and we can make the interior more suitable to your way of living.” He flipped the kitchen to where the dining room had been, moved the dining room to where the sitting room used to be, and removed the wall between both spaces to create one large area. “Now the dining room has views

of the water,” says Rainho, who worked on the project with colleagues Kermit White and Jonathan Hutton. “Their living room was moved, as well, and converted into a larger great room, and as a result it also gained direct site lines to the water.” The ho-hum entry needed a revamp, too. Upon arrival through the front door, guests previously looked directly onto a stairway. “We shifted the entry, so you now walk in and see right out to the Loxahatchee River,” says Reedy, who helmed the construction with project manager Ches Mayer. To maximize those views, glass was added in the great room. “Before, there was just a set of doors that looked out onto the water,” Armour says. “We put in three groups of sliders, and now it’s twentysomething feet of continuous vistas.” Additionally, the kitchen was reconfigured to allow for a new laundry room and a cabana room. “We also put in a butler’s pantry,” Armour says. The couple cook and entertain, so the kitchen received a quartz-topped island that functions as both a prep area and a buffet. “We wanted a large island, because people congregate in that space,” Lyn says. “The island has two pullout refrigerators: one stocked with beer and the other with water and other drinks.” Throughout the home, Armour worked with design associates Taylor Ehrlund and April Wood to give the McCarthys a beachy aesthetic. “They wanted something with a Hamptons feel that was colorful and not too serious,” Armour says. “We were going to keep the palette blue and white, but Lyn wanted something fun to liven it up.” She fell in love with a pink-and-orange-striped fabric by John Robshaw, so it became the spring point for pops of color elsewhere. While the couple wanted the interiors to be playful, clean lines were key. “I don’t like things that are very ornate or fancy or twirly or gilded,” Lyn says. “So the moldings are beautiful but simple.” The home would also have to withstand wear and tear, because the active family is often on the water, paddleboarding or boating. “On the sofa, we used a microfiber, so you could plop down, and it would be great with both the dogs and kids,” Armour says. “The ottomans are also microsuede, so you can put your feet up, even when they’re wet.”

The home’s original staircase was remade into a focal point, painted white and navy blue and given cleaner, squared-off balusters. The space underneath the stairs—formerly a closet—was opened up to create a cozy nook with a bench and a pendant from Capitol Lighting. Custom pillows and a cushion were fabricated by Mendo’s Custom Interiors. Pink ottomans by Lee Industries nestle beneath a Redford House center table. The art is from Excentricities.

The master bedroom has expansive river views, so the palette inside was kept soft and serene as not to compete. The white linen bed, featuring nailhead trim, is by Lee Industries. The bedside table is by Bungalow 5; the polished-nickel sconce above it is by Ralph Lauren Home for Visual Comfort & Co. Fringed pillows pull color cues from artwork from Wendover Art Group.

Opposite: As part of the renovation, the red brick home received coats of white paint, completely transforming the exterior. Now the outside of the house, including the outdoor furnishings and an inviting hammock, recalls the interior palette of mostly blue and white. Landscape designer John Walsh ensured the landscape would be befitting of the architecture; it was installed by Impact Landscaping & Irrigation. Below: The pool and deck, designed as an extension of the lanai, were oriented toward a panoramic view of the Loxahatchee River. The spa within the waterfall-edge pool, built by Apex Pavers & Pools, creates a smooth, glassy water-on-water effect. The land adjacent to the lanai was sculpted to cradle the pool and deck into the gently rolling topography. The shell-stone pavers were installed by Florida Brick and Stone.

The outdoor living space, of course, was equally as important. The river view was previously obscured with existing vegetation at the lower level of the lanai, so the vegetation was removed and fill was added to elevate the deck and create a double-sized terrace with sweeping water views. Landscape designer John Walsh also designed a new pool and spa, shifting the original orientation of the pool area to capture a 180-degree river view. “We came up with a slick modern pool,” he says, “so when you’re sitting on the lanai, you see one continual view of water, starting with the infinity-edge spa and waterfall-edge pool, and carrying through to the natural environment.” He cleaned up the overgrown greenery obscuring the house, as well, preserving the existing plant material and integrating the home into the landscape. “As you come in the entry, there was a large stand of sabal palms,” he recalls. “I said, ‘Why don’t we save them?’ So we cleaned up the palms and

cut down the overgrown understory plantings, and they became a simple design element.” The goal throughout the project, indoors and out, was to enhance what was already there. “This house could have been a tear-down,” Armour says. “Everything that was done architecturally was critical to the success of this project.” There were substantial challenges: Steel beams and temporary and permanent foundation work had to be installed to shore up the house during the remodel as the house had bones that were off-level. And the team had to compensate for renovation and addition work done in the ’80s, as well. But the final result speaks for itself. As questionable as the home looked at first glance, Lyn saw the gem beneath the tarnish. “I didn’t want a turnkey residence,” she says. “I wanted a house that would be my own. We brought the outdoors inside, and now when I walk through that front door, it takes my breath away.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 259

Above: The master bedroom’s sitting area offers comfortable lounging on the sofa or swivel chair, both by Lee Industries and covered in a Sunbrella textile. A tufted ottoman, also by Lee Industries, is upholstered in Kravet’s Kashmira Aquamist fabric. The room is enveloped by Kravet draperies and Thibaut wallcovering. The rug is by Dash & Albert. Right: In the guest master bedroom, the Stanley Furniture bed is covered in a braided-trellis fabric; bedding is by Manuel Canovas. Bedside tables by Modern History flank the bed, and atop each is a ceramic-and-acrylic lamp by Currey & Company. The writing desk, by Hooker Furniture, has prime views of the pool and river. INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING ì CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.î THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
