POP OF COLOR

Micah Tipler, founder of TIPLER Design, is a true believer in embracing color in the kitchen. With DacorMatch, the innovative color system introduced by leading luxury appliance brand, Dacor, you can personalize your appliances in any pantone imaginable. Show your true colors. All of them.

Micah Tipler PRINCIPAL, TIPLER DESIGN Houston, TX

H

ouston based interior designer and Dacor Design Council member, Micah Tipler, is a force in the design, architecture, procurement, showroom, development, and build industries. Her “outside of the box approach has earned her status as an industry leader, and she is applauded for the design risks she takes, including her creative use of color in kitchen projects.

“What excites my design team and our clients about DacorMatch is the capability to truly customize something.” DacorMatch allows designers and their clients to customize the kitchen like never before. “Everyone uses their kitchen in a slightly different way. Being able to tailor it to fit all of our clients’ needs has become critical to the design process,” Tipler says. The DacorMatch Color System makes it possible to paint Heritage wall ovens and ranges in any color on the spectrum. “We’ve done ranges in subdued colors, from pearl white to navy blue. But we’ve also designed fun ovens in teal, fuchsia and orange, making something really unique and special,” she shares. The process is simple. By providing Dacor with your selected color swatch, the team will match it exactly, delivering a custom appliance fit to your taste. Tipler shares from experience: “Once we’ve established a color palette for a particular project, we determine an accent color that speaks to the client. Then, we provide Dacor with a pantone number, and the team creates a sample to send us for approval. It’s been a match every time.” In addition, Dacor offers seven standard colors to choose from. “DacorMatch is truly limitless, which as a designer, is hugely exciting,” Tipler says. “Being able to specify a personalized appliance for our clients that we know they’ll enjoy with their families for years is game-changing.” From start to finish, DacorMatch appliances take six to seven weeks. Warming Drawer in DacorMatch upon special request only.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Designers are increasingly seeking out bespoke pieces for their clients, such as this bold wall treatment by MJ Atelier (right).

Welcome to our annual Luxury Report issue dedicated to luxury in all its forms and iterations. To prepare for this issue, our editors reached out to designer-friends to ask, “How do you define luxury?” It’s interesting to read their responses. Certainly, it’s not about extravagance or price. For many, it’s about comfort, calm and a sense of peace in an otherwise noisy and somewhat chaotic world. Luxury is most definitely about anything that is made with great care and an attention to detail. I think it’s also about originality, which seems to be rarer to find these days. Most anything that’s elusive or slightly out of reach can be perceived as luxurious. Of course, time is the ultimate luxury: The idea of waiting for something to be made, (while we’re all programmed for instant gratification these days) seems sumptuous. I can relate to Ken Fulk’s response—that luxury is about the little things, like the scent of fresh-clipped flowers or an unplanned Sunday spent on the sofa. Can’t count how many weekends I’ve fallen into a nap on my red English roll arm, with a paperback novel atop my lap and my two Shih Tzu’s curled up beside me. Heaven!

Fashion designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” With customization on the rise, many designers could apply the sentiment to homes outfitted with bespoke elements—including Achille Salvagni, principal of his eponymous international architectural and design practice. “In the last 10 years, my clientele has increasingly sought out homes that are oneof-a-kind,” he says. “In many ways, looking for a designer is like looking for a tailor that can make a dress that fits your body perfectly.” He cites a client who recently hired him to create a highly custom home in Mumbai, India. “She wanted a living room that was a portrait of her family,” he explains. “After interviewing

the family members, I created furniture that represents the qualities of each. A sofa embodies the personality of the father, the table is inspired by the daughter—together, all the furniture tells this family’s story.” Maria Apelo Cruz, who co-founded the decorative arts studio MJ Atelier with her husband Mike Jovanovic, also sees an increase in customers seeking one-off wallcoverings, furnishings and lighting. “We are riding the wave of designers who want to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Today’s clients are looking for conversation pieces that no one else has.” An example is the wallcovering they made for an inveterate video gamer that includes symbology from classics including Zelda, Pac-Man and Pokémon.

Cruz says that bringing a designer’s creations to life requires finding the right craftspeople, and that’s challenging. “Many aspects of quality craftsmanship take a lifetime to master—so by the time you’ve perfected your trade, it’s time to retire,” she says. “Traditionally, a lot of information was passed down through families, but these days, some of the offspring of contemporary craftspeople are pursuing other things.” To keep those skills alive, she and her husband have started

personal aspect that makes the effort and expenditure worth it. The company offers their products in bespoke sizes, colors and fabrics. “Every person has a different idea about what makes the perfect design elements. What could be better than picking your own fabrics in the color combination to make something just for you? Customization is the ultimate expression of luxury.”

Custom designs take the form of personalized wall treatments, such as the one shown on the previous page by MJ Atelier. Other examples include Hammerton Custom’s oneof-a-kind lighting fixtures (top, right); interior furnishings by Achille Salvagni (center); and personalized linens by Matouk (below, left).

a teaching guild—and to the couple’s delight, they are discovering an eager audience. “The stereotype of a millennial is a person staring at a computer screen,” Cruz says. “But we’ve found many young people who want to learn how to paint, draw and gild.” That’s not to say there’s no place for computer screens in today’s customization climate. In fact, technology is facilitating even higher levels of tailored details. “These days, we have old-world techniques and modern tools living together—you’ll find an anvil next to computer-driven cutting equipment,” says Paul Verbecky, the general manager at Hammerton Custom. “Computer modeling is enabling us to do things we couldn’t have imagined in the past—we recently created a model showing a 6,000-pound fixture that’s 25 feet at its widest point. It’s the easiest and fastest way to show how a piece like that would look in a space.” But custom design takes longer and is more expensive to produce—so why are more consumers seeking it out? George Matouk, Jr., CEO and president of the linen company that bears his family’s name, believes it’s the

Comfort ZONE

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN TEAMS UP WITH PERENNIALS TO CREATE FABRICS AND RUGS THAT WORK INDOORS AND OUT. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON

Timothy Corrigan is a self-proclaimed “Perennials freak.” With the debut of his new seven-fabric, three-rug collection, Perennials by Timothy Corrigan, the celebrated designer has put his own stamp on the high-performance fabric company’s “rugged yet beautiful” ideology. Luxe got the scoop on this exciting collaboration and why indoor-outdoor textiles are the future of design. You are crazy about high-performance fabrics. I’ve been using performance textiles for years— back when they were still ugly striped canvases! I realized early on, if you don’t have to worry about how you’re living in a house then it makes such a difference. I know some people who won’t let anyone drink red wine in their home, and I hate everything about that! When it is a “look but don’t touch” zone, then you’re not comfortable, your family isn’t comfortable and your guests aren’t comfortable. And the appeal of Perennials? It’s a gamechanger. Not all performance fabrics are created equal, and Perennials is kind of fanatical with how its fabrics perform. Also, the rugs feel like the

finest wool or silk. The company’s beautiful, soft carpet is stain-proof, which is exactly what people want. Customers want beauty and practicality. What was the spark for your collection? I have offices in Paris and Los Angeles, so my aesthetic is very much European-inspired, but through a casual California filter. In this collection there’s a fabric that is almost like an Italian tapestry, which is called Go for Baroque. There are also chinoiserie options, one which is inspired by a Chinese wallpaper and another that is reminiscent of an 18th-century interpretation of a French chinoiserie. You skew traditional, while Perennials leans contemporary. This was a real leap for Perennials. Ann Sutherland, who started the company, isn’t naturally drawn to the warmer colors and classical styles that I use but she said, “That’s why we need you!” I told her, “This is not going to be in your comfort zone. Be ready for it.” What’s in the crystal ball for performance fabrics? It’s important to see these fabrics as

“Clients want beauty and practicality,” says designer Timothy Corrigan of his latest performance fabric and rug collection with Perennials.

something to be used indoors and figuring out how more products can be performance based. We’ll also see an expansion into materials like wood finishes with marine varnish so people don’t have to worry about putting down a glass. The future of design is influenced by consumers who are not willing to make the trade-off between performance and beauty.

THE LATEST TABLETOP FINDS ADD A TOUCH OF ARTFUL LIVING TO THE EVERYDAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

This season’s spirited tabletop selections are making it easy to transform everyday place settings into luxurious works of art. Each piece offers a creative expression while also evoking a bold sense of time and place. Consider Buccellati’s Doge collection, which inspirits its Italian craftmanship and pays homage to the splendors of Venetian art with hand-hammered and chiseled silver enhanced with malachite, lapis and red jasper. Closer to home, Michelle Blade looked to her Pacific Northwestern roots for her ceramic Garden Series. Molly Hatch’s Always Collection brings a modern and playful twist to a traditional 18th-century European surface pattern, and Luke Edward Hall’s collaboration with Richard Ginori is based on his love of Greco-Roman mythology. And finally, James Peter Henry morphed his public art installation at TableArt into a limited-edition collection that celebrates “the complexity of a human journey in a possible fourth-dimensional state.”

TALKING SHOP Seattle natives Steve Hoedemaker and Tim Pfeiffer, of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer architecture and interior design, have a passion for storytelling and a deep appreciation for artisan-made decor. And with a firm focused on connecting people with space—and space with surroundings—they’re bound to have a discerning eye for meaningful objects that solidify those connections. So it’s only natural that they opened art, design and decor source Housewright (6107 13th Ave. S.), which highlights exclusive artisanal textiles, vintage furniture, ceramics and artifacts. The duo recently chatted about what makes their Georgetown neighborhood shop, celebrating its one-year anniversary this December, so special. housewrightgallery.com How did Housewright come to be? SH & TP: As an extension of our architecture and interior design firm. We often found ourselves looking to enhance our work with engaging, soulful and unique pieces. Describe the shop’s vibe. TP: It’s an organic, handcrafted experience— artisan and luxurious, textured and tailored. We offer art and objects, lighting and furnishings, from Belgian to Brazilian, and from newly crafted to antique and midcentury modern. Favorite objects? TP: Loving the gorgeous 1970s Arne Norell sofa reupholstered in a Mark Alexander natural and blue Belgian linen. The new tabletop bronze work by artist Michele Scholnick from Branch in Venice, California. Also, the beautiful ceramic lighting collection of Stone and Sawyer lamps.

116 / luxesource.com

Tell us about the neighborhood. TP: Georgetown feels like Seattle’s last original neighborhood—think Williamsburg in Brooklyn, circa 2000—and it’s on the move. It has some grit and nightlife and is home to great art, artists, furniture and food. A large design district is right next door, providing a wealth of opportunity for the local design community. Talk about the evolution of the PNW design scene. SH: Seattle’s design cred has moved forward with a globally inspired community. With the regrowth of commercial districts, neighborhood design destinations have emerged all across the city. We’re experiencing a generational entrepreneurial shift from more provincial design to a decidedly more regional West Coast voice.

JOINT ADVENTURE MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS WRITTEN BY NINA KORMAN

Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, owners of the ultra-successful furniture company that bears their name, are in a car, speeding through rural North Carolina on a weekday morning. Moving forward quickly is an apt metaphor for their business, which is now celebrating its 30 th anniversary. Gold and Williams initially founded a factory in Taylorsville to ensure superior, American-made products, then proceeded to take care of their now 900-plus employees by establishing on-site day care, a gym, a health center and a café. Their progressive policies rocked the furniture industry, and their products—vintage-style leather club chairs and seating slipcovered in casual fabrics—did too. The duo spoke with Luxe about their time in the industry. mgbwhome.com How does 30 feel? MG: Weird and interesting and great. We just hired a CEO, Allison O’Connor, to spearhead things, nurture our team and position us for even bigger and better growth in the future. Greatest lesson learned while in business? BW: Follow your gut. If you don’t have that really deep feeling about something, it may not be quite perfect. So many people let others get in their minds or talk them out of stuff, then things go kind of haywire. Proudest accomplishment as a company? BW: Day care. We started it 22 years ago. Since then we’ve had about 70 kids there all the time. You get to see them grow up. What’s next? MG: A whole new take on leather club chairs in exciting colors, like leaf green, deep red and peacock blue (shown). Some of the silhouettes are classic modern while others have a very new traditional look. 118 / luxesource.com

After a closing down in early 2017 for a $54 million restoration and renovation led by LMN Architects, the Seattle Asian Art Museum (1400 E. Prospect St.) is getting ready for a late fall/early winter reopening. The striking 1933 Art Deco building (originally home to the Seattle Art Museum) will be fully restored and exclusively feature the extensive Asian art collection. The renovation will consist of a sensitive addition that will increase the building’s footprint by just 3,600 square feet but result in nearly 14,000 square feet of interior space. Breaking ground in 2018 after months of preparation, the project is slated to receive significant infrastructural upgrades to protect the landmark, preserve its west-side façade and safeguard the art. Although the building required major modifications to increase safety and functionality—it hadn’t been substantially renovated since its inception during the Great Depression—maintaining its iconic presence in the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Volunteer Park has been key. One distinction between the old space and the new is the change to the Fuller Garden Court at the museum’s heart. Doors carved from the existing scagliola walls will open onto a glass-enclosed lobby, allowing for views of the verdant park from both sides of the building and a connection to new galleries. Conservation and education spaces also will be added, community gathering spots will be enhanced, and even the park itself will receive some brand new walkways as well as restoration to some of its historic Olmstedian paths. inspire.site.seattleartmuseum.org/

THE WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN + BATH

ZEPHYR zephyronline.com |

“With the Presrv™ Wine and Beverage Coolers, we integrated some of the most sought-after technological elements and combined them with eye-catching aesthetics.”

discoverzephyr

A seasoned entertainer’s kitchen is no longer complete without a Presrv™ Cooler. Created by wine preservation and ventilation pioneer Zephyr, the Presrv Wine and Beverage Coolers are posh and high-performance refrigeration units complete with Full-Extension Wood Racks, Active Cooling Technology, and two distinct temperature zones. Ideal for those who appreciate everything from red and white wines, craft beer and perfectly chilled sodas, the Beverage Cooler dips down to a frigid 34 °F—an ideal temperature for storing beer and other beverages that taste best at their frostiest. The Presrv Cooler works in nearly any space; its design is centered on providing solutions for the way people live and where they spend their time in the home. In an open kitchen, a Presrv Wine Cooler ensures that favorite bottles of wine are easily accessible when entertaining guests. And in game rooms, large walk-in closets or dens, a Beverage Cooler is an ideal option to store favorite drinks, so they are on hand and chilled to perfection.

Luke Siow, Zephyr President

THE RIGHT MIX Integrating mixed metallics throughout the home continues to dominate design trends. A sleek alternative to stainless steel, the titanium-coated black stainless steel Presrv Coolers give a sophisticated edge to wine storage. Zephyr’s signature black stainless steel finish is available on the Dual Zone Wine and the Single Zone Beverage Coolers.

Incredible Homes... Have Excellent Windows, Doors and Mouldings

THE LOOK An insider’s guide to what’s new in the world of posh high-rise living, plus bold color ideas to enliven the home’s high-traffic zones.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

INTO the BLUE ONCE OVERLOOKED KITCHEN STORAGE SPACES ARE REINVENTED WITH RICH, JUICY COLOR. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.

“I love using bold color in a room that feels unexpected,” explains Houston-based designer Lauren Haskett of this sophisticated butler’s pantry scheme that packs a punch with its sensuous blue shade. Traditionally, the kitchen has been a neutral zone where clients steered clear of adventurous tones. Yet today designers are turning to bright and dramatic designs in the kitchen’s auxiliary spaces: Think glamorous and vivid gem tones in a prep kitchen, butler’s pantry or wet bar. These more modest areas are being transformed into rich jewel boxes—a surprising departure from what was once a purely functional room. As Haskett notes, “Color really sets the tone of the room.” So why not add some drama to peeling potatoes and storing spaghetti sauce?

PANTRY PERFECT LAUREN HASKETT

While using a strong color took some persuading (Black was the original pick!), designer Lauren Haskett always knew her client’s butler’s pantry needed something fresh. The trick was elevating the design of this space with polished surfaces and elegant details that were in keeping with the rest of this stately home near Fort Worth, Texas. houstoninteriordesign.co Tell us about the function of this space. I call this the butler’s pantry, but it really has a multitude of uses including acting as a connector between the main kitchen, media room and mudroom, so it gets used all the time. As the kitchen space only has one wall of cabinetry, this room doubles as a coffee bar, wet bar, charging station, storage area for china and catering kitchen. Several appliances, including a Perlick refrigerator, Scotsman ice machine and KitchenAid dishwasher, are also housed in the pantry.

A Native Trails sink and Kallista faucet sit in front of a large window that looks out onto the patio and pool. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls.

206 / luxesource.com

Is the same level of sophistication carried throughout the house? The overall aesthetic of the home is definitely on the formal side and even the spaces that are casual still have an elegance to them, so I wanted to make sure the butler’s pantry reflected how refined this residence is. I also wanted to inject a dose of glamour with this grand color.

photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.

The color is so striking. How did you select it? I’m so happy we went with Hague Blue because there is so much depth to it; it can go green, blue and gray all at the same time. However, what’s most important when working with a darker color in a space is to incorporate contrast, so it won’t ever feel like a cave. Here, we added lighter countertops, pale wallpaper, metallic hardware and glass-front cabinets that bounce light around.

Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl, the designers behind West Hollywood, California, firm Studio Life.Style, wanted to make sure the spaces they created for a clients’ home in Los Angeles had longevity and an enduring aesthetic for their growing family. In the boy’s bathroom they decided to focus on a scheme that was fun and playful yet sophisticated enough to stand the test of time. “Patterned tiles are a great way to bring in color,” the designers explain of a bath area lined with graphic greenand-white tiles, a combination that feels less expected than the traditional blue and brings in bit of whimsy. studio-lifestyle.com 212 / luxesource.com

OUR ANNUAL DEEP DIVE INTO REAL ESTATE AND THE SHEER LUXURY OF HIGH-RISE LIVING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

MOVING ON UP Over the last few years, more and more people have been gravitating toward cities and the vibrant lifestyle that high-rise living delivers. Young executives, international professionals, families and retired couples are looking for ease, convenience and walkability—museums, restaurants and schools at their doorstep—but all within the frame of luxury living. To meet the demand, developers are turning to the world’s most respected architects and designers to create residential buildings that meet every need, and quite a few whims. A latenight cognac and a game of billiards? A sunrise swim in the infinity pool overlooking the city? It’s all possible. And while the amenities are designed to feel resort-like, they are also intended to feel like home.

RISE

The Harrison, on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, was ahead of the curve when it devoted its penthouse floor not to the preeminent condo but to its residents’ pleasure—a democratizing move that new developments are following. There, designer Ken Fulk, who designed all of the property’s public spaces, created Uncle Harry’s, a green-lacquered lounge that lets everyone take in the 49th floor’s spectacular vistas. “With 180-degree views spanning from the ocean to the bay, we imagined this as the sky-high aerie of a bon vivant explorer that just happens to be your favorite uncle,” says Fulk. Accessed by a grand entry salon, the floor includes a dining room, pantry, fitness center and spa. It’s an homage to the city’s elegant and continental spirit, just with Fulk’s signature pizazz. theharrisonsf.com

TABLE TALK For its latest collection, Armani/Casa has re-released its clever Link coffee tables with a colorful new look. Originally created in walnut and brass, the new edition, which debuted at Salone del Mobile in Milan this spring, is designed with shagreen-effect leather tops in red, blue and green—colors that appear throughout the collection. The tabletops are banded with satin-brass trim and set on walnut bases. Use the three rhomboidal designs as handy little side tables on their own, or nestle them together to form a larger, hexagonal surface (shown). armani.com/casa

OPEN BOOK JEFFREY BEERS

Lobby library at 277 Fifth Avenue “Our design reflects the energy and sensibility of NoMad,” says Jeffrey Beers of his vision for 277 Fifth Avenue. “It’s my favorite neighborhood in New York, so it was easy to be inspired by the area’s historical buildings and creative vibe.” Making a traditional statement in thoroughly modern style is the lobby library, one of the building’s most sophisticated amenities. 277fifth.com Why a library? In the building’s lobby entrance, we really wanted to make an instant “welcome home” statement. Describe the look. Handsome, sensible, tailored and timeless. Tell us about the features. If you look closely, you’ll see the library mimics the building’s exterior. It’s beautifully made with dramatic, double-height cases and incredible wood detailing. While we have an affection for designing bookcases (I’m an avid book collector), we prefer to collaborate with renowned publishers like Assouline to curate what goes onto the shelves.

HIGH SOCIETY

FOUR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS CHAT ABOUT LUXURY AMENITIES AND THE FUTURE OF HIGH-RISE LIVING.

CURT R. BAILEY

LEONARD STEINBERG

KEVIN BATCHELOR

BRIAN LEVITT

What trends are you seeing in the high-rise sector? Developers will increasingly cater to families who appreciate the benefits of urban living—a graciously designed residence that extends to worldclass amenities for all generations. Must-have amenity: Fitness centers. I want state-of-the-art equipment, first-class service, innovative programming, and well-designed spaces that offer communal cardio workouts to private Pilates sessions. relatedmidwest.com

Why is the high-rise market so hot? Time is the last luxury, and high-rise living delivers convenience. Elevating yourself above the city allows you to enjoy all its joys while separating yourself when it’s time to relax and unwind. Amenities on the horizon: Wind turbines on top, generating energy for the entire building and a landing pad for drone deliveries. Security will become much greater, too. compass.com

Who’s moving in? In the past decade, we have seen a downsizing trend amongst empty nesters, gypsy nesters and older millennials. What’s luring them? This demographic wants walkability and a 24-hour, lock-and-leave lifestyle. Everyone wants their own personal concierge to handle everything from dry cleaning and food deliveries to tickets to the opera. They’re looking for higher-quality, personalized butler-style services. You can’t beat the hyper-convenience. hines.com

What amenity is most important to you? Where we live has a profound effect on our well-being and I’m all for beautifully designed common spaces that encourage gathering. How do you see the high-rise lifestyle advancing? People choose condo living because they want to know their neighbors. There needs to be a renewed focus on creating memorable experiences that build a stronger connection between people, place and community. navareal.com

15 Hudson Yards, a collaboration between architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, who oversaw the interiors, has devoted its 51st floor to entertaining amenities that will thrill epicureans and oenophiles alike. Not only are there private dining suites and a speakeasylike wine storage facility, but also a chef’s kitchen and wine tasting room. Rockwell defined the kitchen with a monolithic stone island and opted for leather counter stools in shades of gray and green—all in keeping with the project’s focus on natural materials and interiors that are, “simultaneously calm and strong,” he says. Adding to the gastronomic delights are the property’s restaurants by such luminaries as Thomas Keller and José Andrés. hudsonyardsnewyork.com

LIVE + IN PERSON: THE EASTBANK DIFFERENCE Eastbank Contractor Appliances prides itself on providing a warm, inviting atmosphere, offering coffee, sparkling water, sodas, even beer or wine. “There is no hard close,” the team says. “Many times, we tell customers they aren’t quite ready to order until they check a few details with their builder or designer. It’s more important that they thoroughly understand their appliance choices to make the best selection.” To assist the selection process, the Eastbank team delves deeply into how a product is built, including factory visits around the globe. Next, they install the most impressive products with live showroom demonstrations. “We all do a lot of cooking in the showroom to see for ourselves how products actually perform,” they say. “This allows us to make the best recommendations to meet particular needs.”

When considering appliance showrooms, it’s difficult to know what sets one apart from the other. At Eastbank Contractor Appliances, it’s all about the approach … and its customers clearly appreciate the difference. For co-owners Tom Dinsdale, Derek Berg, Rob Kemp, Jackie Paul and Thom Feller—who worked together many years in the Portland appliance market—it all began with one question: “What if we were allowed to qualify and educate our customers to help them choose the best appliances without any limitations?” In 2012, they responded, opening Eastbank Contractor Appliances. Working with high-end builders, remodelers and the public, the Eastbank team embraces every moment afforded to share their knowledge on which brands deliver the best in quality and performance. “Our story is that we care about our customers before and after the sale,” they say.

“We specialize in presenting high-quality, proven kitchen appliances to our clients.”

Envi Interior Design Studio provides an elegant design aesthetic with emphasis on environmentally conscientious methodology, natural materials and sophisticated style. The perfect marriage for any kitchen or bath, where principal Susie Hoffmann carefully balances function and aesthetic. “A great balance of the two will result in the ultimate design,” she says. “We layer materials and textures to create a language in each space. Ideally, this language is carried out throughout the home.” While Hoffmann plays with whimsical, unexpected colors in both spaces—think deep blues, deep greens and rose—she holds fast to keeping the designs clean and uncluttered. Adding a butler’s pantry is one way she puts her advice into practice. “It keeps extra appliances, storage and the ‘not-so-pretty’ aspects of cooking behind closed doors,” she says.

UNPLUGGED + TUNED OUT Technology factors into every aspect of design, from products and appliances to methods of construction and communication. However, there are certain aspects of technology that I prefer to intentionally omit in the kitchen and bath. In my opinion, the bath is a sacred space where one should be encouraged to “unplug,” turn off the phone, turn off the TV and relax. The kitchen should encourage gathering and social interaction. When possible, I recommend fewer electronics here as well.

SO MUCH GOOD MATERIAL + Q uartzite counters. Quartzite is a beautiful, natural material that is durable and low maintenance + M iele appliances. Miele products are gorgeous and highly functional lamorous tile. Who can resist a stunning tile + G to add texture, interest or a pop of color

“We design to purify, balance and energize.”

1. A stunning view provides the backdrop for the tub in this junior master bath. A custom concrete vanity was designed to complement the graphite tub in color and form. 2. A contemporary take on a classic material, Carrara marble adds elegance and light to this palette. Stainless steel, glass and edgy light fixtures complete the composition. 3. Layers of textures and neutral colors create a subtle luxury in this master bath, where black travertine floors combine with Taj Mahal quartzite counters. 2

“The kitchen is the heart of the home, so the challenge of designing this space is never taken lightly,” Pedini PDX owner and designer Victoria Faragalli says. “We combine our sleek, minimal cabinets with beautiful materials and finishes that tie in with the rest of the home, to make it both an inviting space to spend time and a functional and organized one that enhances the cooking experience.” While the open-concept, all-white kitchen continues to trend, Faragalli notes many clients are opting for large kitchen islands with ample seating or attached tables, in lieu of formal dining. “They are also taking more risks with color,” she says. “Matte black finishes mixed with wood are in, and gray tones are very popular as well.”

REPURPOSING THE PANTRY We used to see a lot of pantries behind doors, and now we are opening up those areas and using them as functional spaces, putting all the clutter behind cabinet doors instead of passage doors. For one project, we took out the wall separating the pantry and turned it into a coffee bar on one side, and incorporated pantry storage on the other. It increased the kitchen’s footprint by about 20 percent—much more space than the homeowners realized was there.

NEW ORDER KEY REVISIONS READY A LUTYENS-INSPIRED HOME IN WEST LINN, OREGON, FOR ITS RESIDENTS’ NEXT CHAPTER. WRITTEN BY JENNIFER SERGENT / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID PAPAZIAN

In the living room of a West Linn home refreshed by designer Joelle C. Nesen is a sofa in a Kravet buffalo plaid and a coffee table by Formations. Reupholstered armchairs include one in a delicate Rose Tarlow Melrose House pattern. On the floor is a rug from Kush Rugs. Above is a Vaughan chandelier.

A

rich and fulfilling life is dependent upon constant discovery and change, lest the status quo render one complacent—or worse, out of touch. The same can be said of great architecture, as a West Linn, Oregon couple realized after they’d lived for two decades in a Sir Edwin Lutyens-inspired home by architect Jeffrey L. Miller. “It was such an amazing project and property. It just needed a few tweaks,” says designer Joelle C. Nesen, who was commissioned to rework the interior architecture and design to better fit the newest phase of her clients’ lives—without children in the house and with the wife, an antiques dealer, retired. Much of the work for Nesen and senior designer Morgan Thomas involved making sense of the wife’s large and impressive collection of antiques, artwork and porcelain. “On the West Coast, someone with such fine antiques is definitely a rarity,” Nesen says. However, once her client had closed her Pearl District shop, most of the remaining inventory had come back to the house, yielding an embarrassment of riches. “In general, antiques create more depth and soul” within a space, she explains, “but my client had so many she didn’t know what should stay or what should go. They wanted to simplify and make something fresher and lighter.” Certain features that might have been appealing 20 years ago had also become challenging over time. A breakfast area and enclosed bar room, for example, blocked the kitchen from the sun room’s dramatic vista of Mount Hood. The space just so happened to be where the homeowners were spending time enjoying the views and natural light. “It was heated and cooled by a mini-split system,” says the designer, “which for heat wasn’t very cozy.” Upstairs, they’d tired of walking through their closets to get from the master bedroom to the bathroom beyond; and they wished for the bath to be more easily accessible with better function for the 6-foot-5-inch husband and the 5-foot-tall wife. “One of the things that I love about doing projects with people who’ve lived in a house for so long is they know what they want,” says Brian Bohrer, who served as the general contractor with his brother, Jeff Bohrer. The first order of business was knocking out the old bar and breakfast area to devise an open lounge with comfortable seating and built-in shelving that accommodates a new bar. “We created a clearer sight line to the view and to connect the spaces resulting in a better flow,” notes Nesen, and to warm things up in the cooler months, floor heating was installed. In the doubleheight living room, the two-story window tower was rebuilt. Nesen also tailored the bathroom counters and wardrobe dimensions to the husband and wife’s respective heights.

Aesthetically, Nesen reimagined the main level and master suite with a brighter palette and simpler, cleaner fabric and wallpaper patterns to replace the former French Provincial vibe. “We were able to make some interesting choices,” notes the designer, like the living room’s sofa swathed in a buffalo plaid and Victoria Hagan drapery fabric with an understated motif that lends extra depth; and the den’s leopard pattern carpet paired with rust-hued plaid armchairs. The designer’s boldest move might just be the dining room, now covered in graphic wallpaper as a foil to a 19th-century painting by Louis De Koninck and more traditional drapery and upholstery fabrics. “It’s a great backdrop to give it a little playfulness and not seem so severe,” she says. The result allows the owners’ antiques to stand in sharp relief, especially since Nesen edited their numbers. Now, a collection of Quimper pottery is assembled and displayed on a white plaster wall in the library and a group of European oils hangs in the entry’s stairwell. New elements mixed in among her clients’ antiques and reupholstered furnishings not only add interest, they give functionality to areas that were previously unused. A double-wingback chaise anchors the living room’s double-height bay window, while built-in shelving along an opposite wall frames the new library space. “This room was so big, but they only used a small portion of it,” Nesen says. “We really wanted to draw people to both ends.” After its update, the house breathes easier now, with a logical layout and treasured accessories pared down and displayed to full advantage. “It was about making choices that would take them for the duration,” says Nesen, “and are styleappropriate for them and the architecture of the house.”

Rockwood Cabinetry’s custom built-ins define the library. Nesen covered the wife’s antique chairs in a Jasper linen blend and reupholstered her settee in a Brunschwig & Fils print, both in keeping with the traditional feel of the furnishings. Complementing the arrangement is a vintage rug from Kush Rugs.

The branch-form chandelier is an existing piece. Below, right: The wife’s extensive collection of French Quimper pottery provided plenty of choices for Nesen to arrange on a wall in the library. “We worked hard to create collections and groups to be more visually dramatic than just having accessories everywhere,” says the designer.

LIVING HISTORY

A 95-YEAR-OLD TUDOR IN MEDINA, WASHINGTON, IS RESPECTFULLY UPDATED WITH A FRESH, LAYERED LOOK. WRITTEN BY JENNIFER PFAFF SMITH / PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARIS KENJAR

290 / luxesource.com

INTERIOR DESIGN / WHITNEY MAEHARA AND JAMES FUNG, NB DESIGN GROUP

In the living room of a 1924 Tudor, designers Whitney Maehara and James Fung retained the original fireplace and French doors but made furnishing choices that speak to a modern way of living. A CB2 daybed is centered on a rug from Driscoll Robbins Fine Carpets. Kravet sofas, upholstered in mohair from HBF Textiles, face the RH coffee table.

C

ommissioned to update a house in Medina, Washington, designers Whitney Maehara and James Fung found themselves in a real-life fairytale. The home in question was a 1924 Tudor with a brick turret, a moss-covered roof and a panoramic view of Meydenbauer Bay. “It looked like a storybook home,” Fung recalls, adding, “We hadn’t come across a lot of Tudors in Medina proper.” Despite its charming exterior, the structure required nurturing. “It was evident a lot of work needed to be done, but it felt like a great challenge to explore,” Maehara says. Barely touched since the 1980s, the interior was dark and weighed down by heavy woodwork. The kitchen and bathrooms, built for 1920s lifestyles, lacked modern functionality. And although the home’s character was appealing, living in a time capsule was not. The designers hatched a plan to juxtapose old and new elements within the house, paying homage to its history amid modern pieces. Consistency was critical: “A lot of spaces are really segmented, as Tudors are,” Fung says. “It was important to us, as you progressed through the house, that you didn’t feel like every space was separately designed.” Special attention was paid to texture to give rooms a layered sensibility as well as to woodwork and metalwork that wouldn’t feel foreign to the architecture. Working with general contractor Mark Duffy, of MandA Homes, the designers began in the kitchen, where new Shaker-style casework sets a transitional tone. “We didn’t change the galley layout but updated the finishes to lean more modern,” Maehara says. They hung a contemporary glass bubble chandelier in the breakfast area and added a dose of color with a blue range that strikes a retro note. New oak flooring was laid in a herringbone pattern to emphasize the room and stained to match the remaining original, which appears on the stair landing and in the nearby living area. The kitchen updates “helped us build a platform for the rest of the design,” Maehara says. This includes the color palette: With the range as a jumping-off point, the pair turned to relaxing shades of blue, green and gray that reference the property’s foliage and water views. The strategy is apparent in the 20-foot-by-30-foot living area, which the designers were asked to make more intimate. “The biggest challenge was to determine a seating arrangement that didn’t feel too overpacked with furniture but still allows flexibility in terms of hosting and accommodating functions for entertaining,” Maehara says.

luxesource.com / 293

They placed a gray daybed in the center; paired navy mohair sofas in front of the original stucco fireplace; and added a games table by a window. The living area furnishings themselves coincide with the old-meets-new ethos, Fung points out: “The sofas are contemporary in terms of having clean lines and navy mohair. But detailing like the exposed wood legs and loose cushions harks back to a more traditional vibe.” The designers carried the strategy through to the formal dining room, where the settee they positioned near the wooden Parsons table imparts a salon feel. “It allows for the space to be used a little more casually,” Fung says. In most areas, a fresh coat of white paint was all it took to set a clean backdrop for the home’s contemporary and midcentury furnishings, original sconces and artwork that spans generations. To rework the upstairs, architect Kevin Broderick of Broderick Architects came aboard for structural changes. There, in the master bedroom, walls on both sides

of the fireplace were opened up to connect the sleeping quarters with the sitting area. The team also raised the flat ceiling to a peak of 10 feet and relocated the closet to the bathroom, which received double vanities, a new shower and a soaking tub set against blue hexagonal tiled walls. “It doesn’t feel foreign to the house but has an interesting modernity to it,” Maehara says of the pattern. Outside, the team replaced the roof, painted the exterior a lighter neutral shade and swapped inoperable windows for leaded ones to maintain the home’s traditional character. The copper gutters and drip pipes, however, were preserved. “That was important, because that’s something you can’t get as easily these days,” Fung says. “It’s like jewelry in the front of the house.” Now, the Tudor’s updated look acknowledges its 95-year past while ushering in a new chapter with the current owners. “The house doesn’t take itself too seriously,” Fung says. “There is a layered quality and history of the home. Part of the story has been added on.”

LANDSCAPES INSPIRE A SEATTLE ARTIST TO EXPLORE ECOLOGICAL UNDERCURRENTS IN HER WORK. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH / PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAFAEL SOLDI

Artist Mya Kerner works on a painting in her Seattle studio (opposite). Her practice also encompasses sculpture made of wire (left). A cabinet contains some of her small pieces (below, left).

O

n Mya Kerner’s otherwise mundane commute home, following days of dreary winter skies, and two weeks after moving to Seattle from her native Philadelphia, “the clouds finally broke and the mountains came into view,” she recalls. “That was the first time I clearly saw the Pacific Northwest landscape.” In the area to study permaculture, she was in the process of learning how to comprehend the landscape in order to observe and adapt. “My perception and understanding began to change,” says the artist. “My paintings became a way to process all the new information I was receiving.” In her work, she both extols and dissects the language of mountain ranges with expressive lines and swaths of color. Her current practice begins outdoors, whether she’s sketching in the French Pyrenees or the North Cascades. Back in her studio, she develops more drawings and studies from her field sketches before painting the completed composition. “The final image is a process of abstraction,” notes the artist. Rather

than true representation, “I am mostly interested in capturing the memory of the experience, which includes the energy of the landscape.” Kerner conveys this topographical physicality through her oil paints. Instead of brushes, “I’m sculpting with spatulas and X-Acto knives,” she explains, adding and scraping away paint to diversify texture. “Then I interrupt and fragment these fields of color with zigzag lines of graphite.” Working on panels “allows me to use more force than on canvas,” she shares. This frenetic line-work naturally evolved into the artist’s mountain sculptures—forms of wire bent to recreate the ancient energy of tectonic plates smashing together—highlighting effects of the forces of nature on the mountain over time. In her installation “Filaments XII,” commissioned by JW Architects, “the sculpture changes based on your movements, just like the mountains change form as you move” says Kerner. “It first seems like a nest of wire hanging above you. Then, as you walk up the stairs, the image becomes clear.” Her overall perspective has also expanded beyond that moment of sublime. “You can’t make relevant landscape art today without having some sense of ecological crisis,” she notes. At her show this past spring at Linda Hodges Gallery, the humble rocks that have fallen from the mountains took center stage, and it’s an idea she’ll expand further during her next show there in January. “I’ve started to pay attention to what’s happening at the human level when we’re spending so much time idealizing these images of grandeur,” explains Kerner. Instead of recreating nature as separate objects of beauty, “I want my work to remind people that nature is within us as well. We all have our feet on the same earth.”

ALPINE ELEGANCE A MOUNTAINTOP BIG SKY ABODE PROVES THAT RUSTIC GLAM ISN’T AN OXYMORON. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSHUA MCHUGH luxesource.com / 305

O

n a mountaintop in Big Sky sits a chalet of wood, glass and stone so filled with light and warmth that even the most dedicated skiers might be reluctant to leave. This was not the goal the homeowners—avid skiers themselves—necessarily had in mind, but they did desire a house where all would feel welcome. “Cozy is a good word to describe it, as well as sophisticated and dramatic,” says the clients’ designer, Heather Wells. The husband and wife are well-traveled art enthusiasts who appreciate vernacular architecture. “Each of their homes is appropriate to the location,” notes Wells, who also designed the couple’s houses on Martha’s Vineyard and in California. This house was to be no different. The site has south-facing light and stunning views, which is what drew the owners to the property and drove architects Reid Smith and Bob Brooks to create the massive south-facing glass walls. “They wanted us to capture the warmth and exposure, not just to the mountains, but also to the sunlight,” says Brooks, noting the powerful impact the sun has throughout all hours of the day—even into the evening. The glazing presented a particular challenge notes general contractor Erin Hayes, who collaborated on the project with his firm’s president, John Seelye, and site superintendent Steve Rapp. “The project is at almost 8,000 feet and sees winter conditions and temperatures around eight months a year,” Hayes shares, so time was of the essence in installing the glazing and waterproofing the openings prior. A sense of place resonates with several of the quintessentially Western design choices the team favored— think rich wood, hide rugs, stainless steel and an antlerinspired chandelier—but these details pay tribute to the

vibe in a modern way. “It’s refined mountain contemporary,” says Brooks. Smith concurs: “All of our natural materials lean more toward a refined, edited use of them.” The stone has a textural quality, but it’s a coursed stone laid flat for sleeker presentation. The steel windows are patinated and polished. “It’s more like a flat nickel,” notes Smith. The hemlock on the living room ceiling has a visible grain but the boards are smooth and a transparent stain allows the grain to read through. Tempering the many typical-yet-not elements are glamorous ones. Senior designer Stephanie King, who worked with Wells on the project, observes, “The husband travels a lot, and he’s seen a lot of razzle-dazzle moments and used those for inspiration.” These were translated into such details as the back-lit onyx slab hung by the wine cellar and the glass wine cellar itself. Of the latter, notes King: “They liked that it was something you see all the time, but in an unexpected way. It wasn’t doing a wine room in a traditional style.” Other material choices play up the sense of drama. Mixed metals, textured fabrics and bright colors were liberally incorporated, such as the royal blue table at the center of the living room. Wells notes that the vibrant table, along with graphic rug punched up by swaths of red and the eyecatching Jamali painting above the fireplace, set the tone for the space’s evolution. And a descent down the stairs to the lounge proves that a place where games are played can still be chic, with a channel-tufted leather chair and ottoman, navy blue Eames chairs and a wood and brass table. Even clients who want a house suited for entertaining still need a place for escape. They have that with the master suite, a separate volume that is accessed through an interior bridge. Collaborating with fabricator Brandner Design (one of many local maker companies involved with the project), the team fashioned the suite’s striking entrance of blackened steel sandwiched between live-edge walnut slabs. Inside, serene shades of gray and brown envelop the master bedroom where floor-to-ceiling glass shows off the mountains. The Art Deco-inspired master sitting room, which shares a double-sided fireplace with the bedroom, provides a different type of escape. It is pure drama with custom green Venetian plaster walls and a black marble and bronze table, yielding an intimate spot from which to peer outside. Even in such a private space, it’s yet another glam moment. “This home feels true to them,” says King. “You get a glimpse of who they are—and that they’re risk takers.”

Designer Heather Wells says the entry of a Big Sky home “is a preview of the rest of the house. The modern spin on an antler chandelier by Barlas Baylar Atelier and a geometric Kyle Bunting hide rug offer a sophisticated nod to the alpine setting. An Uhuru mirror hangs above a Hudson Furniture console and Holly Hunt stool.
