EDITOR’S LETTER

W

ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES

LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.

ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE

Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”

WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD

▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES

Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”

LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68

Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER

San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”

SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲

Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON

Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”

⊳ KATIE TARATSAS

Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Palm Beach | amyhermaninteriors.com

Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”

LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲

Atlanta | gordondunning.com

Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN

Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look

LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76

at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH

The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”

LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78

The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina

Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

The look of the seven-story structure stays true to the chain’s commitment to laid-back luxury, and design group LK Architecture Inc. included a distinct nod to its location with an open floor plan comprising a lobby, bar, dining (the stylish Archer’s Kitchen + Bar, below), and patio that reflect the spirit of modern Northwestern architecture. The 160 guest rooms follow four distinct layouts; the largest and most luxurious, Archer’s Den, is a one-bedroom suite featuring a private balcony, Chesterfield-style sofas and a wet bar paired with a movable island. archerhotel.com.redmond

Who’s behind fruitsuper? We met during our first Industrial Design college years and immediately recognized that our skill sets were complementary. We’ve been partners in business and life ever since. Why brick-and-mortar? One of the first things we do in every city we visit is seek out stores filled with local wares and knowledgeable shopkeepers. Brick-and-mortar has the ability to create an experience that’s so much more personal than it is transactional. Tell us about the storefront. We set out to design a space that would feel like an extension of someone’s home. From our earliest mood board to each and every fixture, the result is a cozy and bright space filled with collected treasures. From custom hand-thrown ceramic mugs to all-natural, Seattle-made tonic and letterpress collaborations, we’ve selected gifts we would give to our dearest friends. 098 / luxesource.com

FIRST LOOK HERMÈS VANCOUVER

Downtown Vancouver boasts a posh update with a reimagined Hermès storefront on the corner of Burrard and West Georgia, just a block north from its former home, signifying a full transformation of its presence in the city since it arrived 25 years ago. Designed by Parisian architecture agency RDAI, the two-level shop strengthens its connection to Vancouver with traits inspired by the high-rise buildings that dot the skyline, mountains that define the city, and an emphasis on natural materials. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by jewelry and watches, followed by an array of silks and a perfume discovery area. Upstairs they’ll find housewares, and linking the two levels is a floating staircase of oak and glass overseen by their iconic Pegasus, as interpreted by French sculptor Christian Renonciat. The location also features offerings exclusive to Vancouver, like playful roller skates, a triptych of Kelly bags and a limited-edition Twilly scarf. hermes.com/ca

Chef Brendan McGill and Hitchcock Restaurant Group introduced a slice of Italy to downtown Seattle’s historic Exchange Building with Bar Taglio, a Roman-inspired bar and eatery. White café tables and wood-plank flooring relieve visitors from the bustle of the central business district, and the design continues with a 30-foot-long bar clad in tambour oak and walnut with marble counters that hover above embossed leather stools and a tile mosaic. The 2,200-square-foot space designed by SkB Architects offers a cozy respite inside the 1930s Art Deco building, which also houses the Café Hitchcock, a weekday lunch haunt by its namesake group. bartaglio.com ⊳ CHAMPAGNE DINER Flanked by Elliott Avenue West and BNSF Railway’s train yard, Champagne Diner is elevated yet comfortable, chic yet charming. The new restaurant by Bryn Lumsden livens the diner experience with a palette of white, mauve and Pantone’s Galapagos Green. Modern diner booths run parallel to the bar that anchors the space, while gemstone terrazzo tabletops by Sasha Burchuk of New Age Design Studio in Oregon sparkle beneath the windows. “To contrast the highend design of the terrazzo tabletops, I chose Formica with aluminum trim for the others,” says designer Lisa Bowman. “I worked with an upholsterer in the neighborhood for custom banquettes and booths to reinforce ‘diner vibes.’ ” champagnediner.com

Best Practice Architecture updated one of its former projects in Upper Queen Anne from Cupcake Royale to chef Maximillian and Jennifer Petty’s Eden Hill Provisions, a more casual version of their Eden Hill Restaurant. Finding new uses for materials brought in from the former bakery-cafe, Best Practice dreamt up a new bar with salvaged walnut, an updated dining area using existing wood paneling, and a kitchen optimized for a bustling staff. With whimsical details such as large garage doors connecting to candy-colored sidewalk seating and a teal entry shelf displaying provisions for takeaway, the airy bistro fits right in with the neighborhood. edenhillprovisions.com

Seattle’s Burke Museum has opened its doors after three years of construction, including the transfer of 16 million artifacts to their new home on the University of Washington campus. In a rebuild that turned Washington’s oldest museum into what is now dubbed the “New Burke,” the 113,000-square-foot space designed by Olson Kundig is 66 percent larger than its last facility. Visitors are invited to be part of a working museum complete with visible labs and workrooms in addition to exhibits and striking features like sustainable wood siding, a shed-style roof inspired by traditional Coast Salish dwellings, and narrow windows that reference Northwest forests—all created to update and honor its 130-year-old past. burkemuseum.org

DEFINING MOMENT

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING

6

Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING

When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.

For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.

GLAM GLOW

While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN

On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN

When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME

Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com

The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com

We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com

People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com

Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

slumber PARTY

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

Where the term “foosball table” tends to evoke grungy dive bars and fraternity basements, the 90° Minuto Foosball Table by innovative Italian brand Teckell provides a welcome—read: terribly chic—turning of the tides in gaming accessories. With a 12 millimeter-thick crystal playing field, polished stainless-steel goals and a solid Canaletto walnut frame, the playful rec room addition reads as much objet d’art as competitive distraction. Game on. artemest.com

FROM THE SEAHAWKS TO SAN DIEGO : DOSCH DISHES

johnbuchanhomes

From baker to home builder, Heather Dosch’s professional journey proves that success comes in many forms. Growing up in the home-building business, she developed a keen interest in creating and delivering consumable comfort early on. Little did she know that opening a bakery and café would be her first means of this expression. “Oddly enough, the same passion that brought me to baking, brought me full circle to my family’s roots in construction,” says Dosch, CEO of John Buchan Homes. “Building homes and baking have a lot more in common than one might think. Done well, both bring comfort and joy, and require planning, preparation, precision and the highest-quality ingredients.” Since 1961, her firm has built over 4,000 homes throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Bellevue and the Greater Eastside, where Dosch grew up. “It’s beautiful and offers a safe, vibrant and healthy lifestyle,” she says. “With great schools, parks, shopping, dining and culture, the Eastside is a wonderful place to call home.”

How would you spend your ideal Saturday? My ideal weekend day would be a Seahawks Sunday morning game spent with my family and a few mimosas. What is your favorite weekend getaway? A trip to San Diego. I love Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. Share some events in the area that embody the ethos of your community. Hopelink’s Reaching Out Luncheon; Bellevue Schools Foundation Luncheon; Bellevue Farmers Market; and Bellevue Fashion Week. What are your favorite places to eat locally? I don’t dine out often, but when I do I enjoy Mercato Stellina, Central and Black Bottle.

THE LOCAL PERSPECTIVE What locals are looking for … + Open spaces with great flow + En-suite baths + Outdoor living rooms + Mud rooms + Large closets + Guest suite on main level + Big windows + Smart home systems + Frameless cabinets … and why they love living in the PNW + Generosity + Drive + Focus on technology, education, family, health and wellness + Actively working to better the world

1. “This is what home feels like; wood-clad doors and windows, and spaces where milestone moments are celebrated,” says president Kevin Dosch. 2. “The doublesided fi replace is one of my favorite details in the living room,” Heather says. 3. “Gold accents warm up the industrial tone of this clean-lined kitchen,” says director of marketing Mischelle McCall.

Nick Glant, Shawn Filer and Galya Kirstine are all native to Seattle and the Eastside region, so who better than this top luxury real estate team to help area home buyers and sellers navigate both sides of the lake. Glant, president of NWG and founding broker of Compass, leads this trio, with NWG partner and Compass founding broker Filer, who specializes in the Seattle area; and Kirstine, whose title as NWG’s Eastside luxury director, says it all. “We have a combined 50 years of experience in luxury sales,” Glant says. “This collaboration highlights our expertise and ability to cross-promote over a critical geographic area.” Seattle and the Eastside offer an exciting mix of tradition, luxury and technology, making them the most unique places in the country to call home. Although location continues to be the draw for many home buyers, Glant, Filer and Kirstine note an even greater emphasis on modern upgrades, layout and connectivity. “We are seeing a trend that size is secondary to highquality finishes and unique touches that set a home apart,” Glant says.

“Buyers need to know what they are looking for, and they need an agent who can help cut through the noise to find it.” NWG-COMPASS: HISTORY-MAKING REAL ESTATE The NWG team was proud to join the Compass family as the launch partner in the Pacific Northwest in April of 2018. Its roots, however, stretch back to 2007, when it was first founded by Nick Glant. Since 2010, the NWG luxury team, under the leadership of Glant, Filer and Kirstine, have collectively sold over $2 billion in high-end real estate. “We have expertise in luxury homes and condos, waterfront, new construction project sales, and residential resale throughout Seattle and the Eastside,” Glant says. “Our team has quietly been one of the top luxury teams in the region, having represented 25-percent of the top sales in our region in 2018 and 2019, as well as the most waterfront sales in Seattle since 2013.”

WINDERMERE REAL ESTATE, BAINBRIDGE ISLAND 206.795.0202 | windermerebainbridge.com |

tyevansrealestate

It’s easy to see why beautiful Bainbridge Island boasts an amazing quality of life: It’s close to Greater Seattle and the public schools are among the highest-ranked in the state. “The island is 11 miles long, 5 miles wide, and is a recreational paradise,” says Ty Evans, premier executive director and broker with Windermere Real Estate, Bainbridge Island. As the leading agent with more than 35 years of experience, Evans knows Bainbridge better than most. “Our real estate market is fast-paced, so you must have experience behind your purchase and sale,” she says. “We have homes on hillsides and other drainage issues, so knowing island living is critical.” That includes other island alternatives, like homes with acreage or in-town options. When it comes to matching people with homes, Evans has the Midas touch. “One client told me: ‘You have never shown me a house I wouldn’t move into the next day.’ As an agent, that is one of the biggest compliments you can receive.”

“The easy living, the beauty, the waterfront … there’s a peacefulness that blankets this island.” ISLAND INSIDER: BAINBRIDGE BESTS Events. The Harvest Fair for apple-cider pressing; the Bainbridge Island Halloween Walk; and our Grand Old 4th, one of the best small-town celebrations in the country. Eats. I love the new Agate Restaurant for dinner and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art for lunch. Via Rosa 11 for authentic Italian food. The Marketplace at Pleasant Beach Village for coffee and Pane d’Amore for fabulous croissants. Restaurant Marché is always tops for cocktails and dinner. Escapes. If you love road-tripping, Bainbridge is ideal. I point the car west to the Olympic Mountains and head to Hamma Hamma for fresh oysters.

NOTABLE LISTING Magnificent, west-facing Port Madison estate with 217 feet of low-bank waterfront and one of the longest deepwater docks on the island. Enjoy garden walks through more than an acre of beautiful, professionally landscaped grounds. This incredible home was designed by Roger Katz and built by Fairbank Construction. Pool, wine cellar, movie theater and noteworthy finishes included. Offered at $5,860,000.

1. This estate is perfect for the boating commuter. 2. The approach invites one to come in and discover the beauty of the Northwest. 3. A true retreat from the hustle and bustle. 2

O

n first stepping into the Seattle penthouse that would eventually become their city home, Mia Doces and Mike Harrington saw dark wood, mustard-colored countertops and shiny bamboo floors. But they also saw a wraparound balcony with views of downtown and Elliott Bay, and edgy interior architecture complete with concrete walls and exposed ductwork. “It’s meant to be a modern urban loft, and the previous owners had just gone in a different direction,” says Mia. While suited to the previous owners’ tastes, “It just didn’t jibe with the overall aesthetic of the building and the unit itself,” says designer Whitney Maehara, who renovated it with her recently retired partner Nancy Burfiend, general contractor Paul Vassallo and project manager Steve McGaw. But the potential of the apartment was easy to see. The floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive outdoor space— “one of the largest decks that I’ve ever seen on a condo,” notes McGaw—were selling points unto themselves. The couple turned to Maehara and Burfiend, who had come highly recommended by friends, to reconceive the interiors—and to mediate between the couple’s divergent aesthetics. For Mia, it was important to showcase their modern art collection, which includes pieces inherited from her father by Northwest notables. Mike, though, was worried it about it feeling too impersonal. “My husband said, ‘I just don’t want to feel like I’m living in a museum,’ while I said, ‘Are you kidding? That’s exactly what I have in mind,’ ” she laughs. Mike’s own style veers toward the traditional, as reflected in the couple’s other home in Bend, Oregon.

“IT WAS MIA AND MIKE’S INTENTION TO SOFTEN WHAT WAS HAPPENING ON THE INTERIOR.” –WHITNEY MAEHARA

“It was the first time he had done something modern,” says Mia. “I knew that we needed someone to broker that.” To both emphasize the views and display the art collection to its best advantage, the designers first lightened up the finishes so they would harmonize with the ductwork and exposed concrete. “It was Mia and Mike’s intention to soften what was happening on the interior so that they could focus their views outward,” says Maehara. The walls and the kitchen cabinetry are now pale neutrals, and the new oak flooring is a gray that at once feels soft and rustic yet tracks with the home’s industrial vibe. Even the darker finishes—the backsplash tile and the metal barn door that separates the dining area from the master bedroom—feel muted. Against this new backdrop, the artwork—and the view—shine. The entry serves as what Maehara calls the “unveiling experience.” There, a large Galen Garwood painting hangs on the wall dividing the entry and living area. “It compels visitors further in,” she says. The natural daylight spilling through from the main living areas invites further investigation into the dining room, where a stunning Alden Mason painting resides. “That piece is what we centered the design around,” Maehara says. “That was the only one we had in mind at the onset of the project.” In a nod to the downtown vibe—and to solve the problem of lighting posed by the exposed ductwork above the dining table—the team came up with a playful sculptural lighting concept. “We didn’t modify the ductwork in any way,” says McGaw. “So we definitely had to work around it.” The team sourced a light fixture that was flexible enough to wrap around the existing ductwork. “The clients were open to thinking outside the box,” observes Maehara. In the adjoining living area and kitchen, where splashes of color nod to the Mason piece, the outside views look to the southwest and southeast. The open feel also yields a home perfect for cocktail parties, a key factor for a couple who are avid entertainers. Hosting is even easier given that private rooms are notably separate. A media room and guest area are situated on the other side of the entry and the aforementioned barn door encloses the master suite. “I have people over a lot because it’s such a special spot,” says Mia. Special not just because of the stunning scenery, but also for the fact that it pays homage to Mia’s father and his beloved art collection. “Every time I look at the paintings I think, “Oh man, he would love to see them in here,’” she says, “because it feels like the space was just meant for them.”

“We came up with a great solution for a light fixture that was malleable enough for us to wrap around the existing ductwork, designer Whitney Maehara says of the Flos pendants from Diva Group suspended above the Mauro Lipparini table from Ligne Roset in the dining area of this Seattle condo. On the wall is an Alden Mason painting.

Maehara and Nancy Burfiend chose outdoor furniture with clean profiles so as to keep the focus on the stunning views, since the wraparound deck is one of the penthouse’s main draws. alking into Seattle’s beloved home goods boutique Red Ticking feels a bit like stumbling into a globetrotter’s cozy attic. On any given day at this Madison Valley spot, you never know what surprises you’ll find tucked away in the store’s vintage cabinets or laid out on perfectly weathered French farm tables. Inviting curious hands to explore, every square inch is packed with rare antiques and artisan wares from around the world, each lovingly handpicked by owner Pamela Robinson. “I love helping people find their favorite things,” Robinson says of the shop’s eclectic collection. “I’ve always had that nesting instinct, and I want to bring it to others so that they love their home as much as I love mine.” The journey to Red Ticking proved a circuitous one for Robinson, who spent more than 20 years in fashion as a designer and merchandiser. Work meant regular trips to Paris and sideline adventures rambling through the city’s flea markets for rare vintage textiles. These prized fabrics became the source for the store’s original stock, as well as its name, due to her penchant for classic French ticking. “I have a real, undying passion for stripes,” confesses Robinson. Since its brick-and-mortar debut in 2002, Red Ticking has retained the romance of Robinson’s years wandering through Paris and is stocked with gleaming Louis-Philippe mirrors, rattan bistro pieces and shelves filled with her signature curated fabrics. Over the years, the store has grown to showcase items from other

LX_PNW51_SM_Robinson_4.indd 226

destinations close to her heart, including heavy doses of New England charm. “I spent a lot of time in Montauk and Nantucket, so that coastal influence is a big part of the story too,” says Robinson. “Whether European or New England, the store is about bringing the East Coast to the West Coast. I feel very fortunate to have had the community in Seattle embrace my concept.” Her sharp eye is so renowned that, besides sourcing pieces for her shop, she’ll track down requests for clients as well. After years sorting through dusty relics around the world, Robinson knows how to spot a diamond in the rough. Some vintage discoveries test the imagination, often bearing severe damage, but, “I have a really super visual sense when I find pieces,” she explains. “I know exactly the fabric it needs, and I know exactly how it’s going to look when it’s finished.” Whether antique or modern, though, her selection criteria remains the same. “It has to have real character and quality, and I have to love it,” she says. “I want things to be special, and I want you to love them and treasure them too.”

The airy entry of a 1960s Seattle home by renowned architect Roland Terry introduces the thoughtful renovation undertaken by architect John DeForest and designer Andy Beers. There, Beers placed a Rejuvenation mirror and a Visual Comfort & Co. sconce to mingle with the clients’ own antique chest of drawers. NorthStar WoodWorks fabricated the front door.

P

erched on a Seattle hillside, an unassuming midcentury home sits quietly in the company of new builds. From the street, its presence is minimal. This is by design: The residence’s original architect, the renowned Roland Terry, waited to reveal its magic once inside. Built around an interior courtyard with a focus toward the water, the jewelbox house opens up like an island retreat, muting the city life only miles away. “Visiting the house for the first time was a revelation,” says designer Andy Beers. “Despite its modest footprint, it has an incredible elegance and aweinspiring approach to framing the water view. The space planning was brilliant.” Beers teamed with architect John DeForest and project architect Meredith Kelly on a mission: to modernize the 1960s home while preserving its storied history. A leader in Northwest modern architecture, Terry created a surprising feeling of spaciousness in the 2,300-square-foot structure by connecting it to the light, garden and views. Throughout, organic materials—rough-hewn wood ceilings, birch cabinets, slate floors—blurred the lines between inside and out. However, finishes had aged and key rooms required reworking, including an isolated kitchen and cramped bathrooms. With great respect for Terry’s work, the homeowners envisioned a brighter, more open space without losing its integrity. “The goal was to work ‘with the grain’ of the house,” says DeForest, “preserving much of the floor plan and structure while straightening out the kinks.” First things first: Bring the house to its studs. “It was like an archaeological dig,” says David Burr Girvan, who served as the general contractor along with his brother and business partner, Ryan O’Keefe Girvan. The gut allowed the team to convert three separate spaces—the dining, kitchen and sitting areas—into one, opening the kitchen spatially and to the view. Removing both the laundry room and non-structural walls from the bedroom wing allowed for larger master and guest baths. New skylights flooded the home with ample light; the existing lakeside decks were refurbished to help extend the interior living space outside. And the interior courtyard, formerly dominated by a large swim spa installed by a previous owner, received a makeover. When certain original elements had to go—the roughhewn ceilings and slate floors—the team took great care to replace them as Terry would. Bleached fir ceilings now recall the same spirit; weathered limestone floors coordinate effortlessly with existing brick. New furniture-grade oak cabinets replicate the warmth of the original birch. Beers ruthlessly edited every single material, prioritizing texture and studied contrasts to amplify simple, timeless choices. “Instead of going clever, we sourced honest, hard-wearing surfaces with luxurious, hand-made qualities that support how our clients live,” says the designer. “We then employed light finishes to work in concert with the windows and skylights and make the house feel new.”

An overall palette of clean grays, warm whites, soft tans and blush pinks replicate that notion while working hard in the space. With its waterfront exposure, the home experiences a constant flux of changing light throughout the day, shifting the mood. A balance of neutrals stabilizes the myriad light patterns while keeping the focus on original elements still intact, such as a rough-hewn fir surrounding the windows and a stunning, bleached brick fireplace visible from all public rooms. “Simple, soft neutrals allowed the best parts of the house to come forward,” says Beers. “We worked hard to maintain those aspects wherever possible.” Beers felt strongly that the house needed midcentury elements due to their precise scale, but he didn’t want the period house to feel staged. He mastered this delicate balance through fine-tuned juxtapositions across decades: A quirky, contemporary Pelican chair offsets vintage Dux armchairs in the living room; a curvy Swedish armchair lightens the master bedroom’s heavy yet exceptional antique drop-front secretary. Low profiles sit naturally within spaces, creating an effortless symbiosis between architecture and design. “Visualizing the interior palette early in the design process was key,” says DeForest. “It gave us all the confidence to remain true to the simple beauty and flow of spaces in Terry’s original design while giving it new life.” Altogether, each element of the renovation and design harmonize like a dance, coexisting with organic fluidity. It’s impossible to tell where old meets new—each structural seam and material transition was considered “like the dashboard in a Mercedes,” says Girvan. Even modernday technology is carefully hidden—the TV and Internet hubs in cabinets, the light system in the garage with just discreet controls inside. Every detail enhances the home while serving the clients, simultaneously blessing both history and homeowner. “This whole process was about realizing the clients’ vision while doing right by the house,” says Beers. “I hope Mr. Terry would be pleased with the choices we made.”

winding driveway leads to the sloping wooded site that architect Thomas A. Kligerman’s clients purchased to build their Pacific Northwest vacation home, a path that removes any sense of the surrounding neighborhood from those who visit. What’s left, says Kligerman, “is the powerful natural beauty” of the plot. The moody gray atmosphere settling over the saturated colors of the woods captivated Kligerman and seemed to almost demand a more modern approach. “It was an instinctual reaction,” he says. Expansive windows were necessary to admit plenty of natural light in all that damp, cloudy weather, he reasoned, but the notion of creating a modern white box never came up. “The whole palette of the house, we thought, would pick up on the rich, deep colors of the forest.” The philosophy that emerged from his first musings would guide how the home would take shape. “We wanted a house that would reflect the place it was in,” project architect Joseph Carline says. That meant using dark cedar siding, Douglas fir beams, and tobacco-stained oak on the interior walls and floors. Board-form concrete was also added into the mix. “There was an honesty of materials,” Kligerman says. “The structure itself became the ornament and the detail—there were no moldings or gewgaws.” Designer Mia Jung, a Kligerman associate, ultimately saw much less need for interior decoration as a result, she explains, because the architecture would play that role. Guided by the desire to use as much glass as possible, Kligerman’s team decided early on to separate the home’s structural steel from the curtain wall that wraps around its

“THE STRUCTURE ITSELF BECAME THE ORNAMENT AND THE DETAIL OF THE HOUSE.” —THOMAS A. KLIGERMAN

LX_PNW51_HOM_Ike_14.indd 242

rear. As is always the case with their projects, “We had to build the roof before we built the floors—the steel grid doesn’t connect to the floor system,” Carline says. This eliminated the need for thick, structural frames around the glass. “We picked the thinnest profiles we could find. It’s like outlining something with a fountain pen versus a crayon. Thick is good. Fine is better. There’s just more elegance to it,” Kligerman says. “The whole thing becomes much more diaphanous.” Where the glass leaves off, a mosaic of wood paneling and concrete forms the interior and exterior cladding—all rigorously aligned at 6-inch intervals despite the fact that the concrete was poured more than a year before the wood was installed. “If you put a laser on one of those lines at the north end of the house, it’s exactly the same within the smallest fraction of an inch at the south end of the house. It’s beautiful when you see it,” says general contractor Jim Dow, who credits Carline and his superintendent Chris Lange for ensuring everything was properly executed. “It was a really difficult build—everything was super intricate and complicated—but this is one of our best projects, and we’ve been in business for 40 years.” Jung and associate designer Elizabeth Sesser used these materials, along with the steel grids and exposed beams, to inspire the interior design. In keeping with the architectural program, accents were kept to a minimum. “In this house, we selected darker, richer colors to complement the architectural elements and location.” Jung then designed custom furnishings and sourced accents—down to the dishware—that would stand up to their environment: “They’re heavier and more grounded in form,” she notes. And rather than hanging art on the walls, especially given the amount of glazing, she used rugs as the statement makers. “The rug is where the luxury is. That’s where I play design—on the floor,” she says. Outside, Jung worked with landscape architect Dodi Fredericks to marry the exterior with the interior. Mostly native plantings surround the house, even on the second floor where planter boxes are placed outside the master bathroom windows. “Not only is the house in the forest, but the forest is in the house,” Jung says. Kligerman’s firm is best known for its traditional work— he and his partners wrote a book on shingle-style homes— but this project was a welcome departure. “People don’t typically expect this sort of thing from us, but it’s something we like to do,” he says. “I’m a modernist at heart. I loved this exploration, and it already influences projects that are currently on the boards.”

LOCATI ARCHITECTS “Nothing is more satisfying than creating a generational retreat that comes together seamlessly for the families we work with,” says Jerry Locati, founder and principal of Locati Architects, speaking to his firm’s profound love of building personal relationships, while delivering great architecture. Established in 1989, Locati Architects later welcomed Steve Locati, Greg Dennee and Kyle Tage as co-partners and principals of the firm. Over its 30 years, the firm has grown to be a nationally recognized leader in residential design with projects across the U.S. and Canada. Using historic materials in new and innovative fashions, while keeping a firm root in the principles of design has kept the firm ahead of its peers. “An authentic use of materials and spatial adjacencies with key elements, like articulated entryways and dazzling exterior spaces, define our work and create project recognition,” Dennee says. Steve adds, “Using glass, stone, metal and wood continues to be our biggest design challenge and reward.” Not held to any one aesthetic, the Locati team follows a different path for each client. The common thread, though, Tage says: “Every project starts with the same blank sheet of paper and ends with someone walking through the front door for the first time, which is a wonderful journey.”

SCOTT|EDWARDS ARCHITECTURE The first residential project that Scott|Edwards Architecture completed was the Shorepine Village Master Plan in 1998. That same year, S|EA received an AIA Award for this coastal community’s “sensitive response to the fragile environment of the site.” A tightly knit group of beach cottages situated around a wetland in Pacific City, Oregon, Shorepine Village, says principal Rick Berry, was the catalyst for S|EA’s desire to continue designing homes reflective of the Pacific Northwest. Think board-formed concrete walls, exposed warm cedar and large windows that capture views. “Our greatest success has been helping to define Pacific Northwest Regionalism through our portfolio of work that features materials from the area and reflects the lifestyle of the people who live here,” Berry says. Working with communities big and small throughout the Northwest, S|EA has become the engine for bringing design excellence throughout the area. Achieving excellence comes by way of several key commitments in the firm’s approach, namely its client-centered creative process. “We work collaboratively to gain an understanding of the future site of our client’s home,” Berry says. “We ask lots of questions to fully understand our client’s unique needs and desires to ensure their home feels tailored to them.”

TOTH CONSTRUCTION With over four decades of experience behind Toth Construction, it’s difficult to pinpoint one project or key moment in the company’s success. What started with one man—Walter Toth—has led to 45 years of milestones—each triggered by an architect or client willing to extend their trust in the company. With each successful project came more notoriety for uncompromising quality and honesty in the firm’s work. Current owners, sons Erik and Klaus Toth, cite 2002 as a pivotal time, working on a full-scale remodel in a very tight location, that became a turning point in the company’s growth. “The schedule penciled out to 16 months, but the client challenged us to complete it in 12. We involved the whole company in the decision to accept the challenge— and we did it, without compromising on quality or craftsmanship,” they say. “From then on, we realized what an amazing group of people we have and what we have the potential to accomplish.” Teamwork is essential given the firm’s focus on the high-end custom environment. “The design process for these types of projects is often highly collaborative and we set up our team to be the hub of this work,” they say. Though understandably defined by their most recent work, the Toth brothers draw from their deep well to make each project better than the last.

“ We can build anything, but recognize that it’s not about the ‘thing,’ but rather the experience in creating it.”

Ask the Expert To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? Our greatest success has been in assembling and retaining the most capable, highest-achieving staff in our area. Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work and approach to it? Walter Toth. The company culture, ethos and ethics all stem from him. Walter represents the perfect immigrant story. His goal was to work hard at the highest level, and with uncompromising integrity. This is our model for how we operate and how we select who we welcome to join our staff.

ARCHITECTS

KRANNITZ KENT ARCHITECTS Architects Bryan Krannitz and Matthew Kent believe that collaborating with clients is paramount as every design is derived from the search for a specific identity in its solution. “We want to, need to get into our clients’ heads. Our approach cannot be categorized, for design springs from the unique qualities of each particular site and the singular characteristics of our clients,” Krannitz says. Founded in 1999, Krannitz Kent Architects gained traction on its first project—The Yellowstone Club, located in a private community in Montana—which not only demonstrated the firm’s ability to create timeless design solutions to complex programmatic requirements, but also became a testament to their collaborative approach. Krannitz Kent Architects has had success ever since, with new projects elevating its trajectory, including a penthouse project in Maui and a vacation home in Indian Wells, California—adding to its portfolio outside the Pacific Northwest and expanding the firm’s aesthetic beyond the Northwest contemporary style. Kent says, “Rather than aspire to any one architectural style, we seek to align structural expression, readability of form, truth of materials, and rigorous detailing to transcend program, excite the senses and lift the spirit.”

Ask the Expert Can you elaborate on the kinds of communities you work in? Most projects tend to be located in highly unique environments: a site on or in a steep slope; one with commanding views from a mountain or high-rise; or located on rivers, canals and lakefronts.

What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? We utilize 3D modeling/rendering software, 3D print models as well as virtual reality to convey our design intent. To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success and why? Developing relationships with clients whose homes transcend their expectations is our greatest joy. The success of our practice is testament to our process, which, in turn, has earned us the privilege of working with legacy clients designing multiple homes across the United States.

What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in? We’re working on a home for a chemically sensitive client and have worked on some passive homes and a few cottage-style communities. All of these include trying new methods, products and approaches.

FAIRBANK CONSTRUCTION COMPANY In 1978, Tad Fairbank realized he had a passion for good architecture and a desire to work with his hands. Growing up in a neighborhood influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, his appreciation for the materials, tools and relationships forged established the foundation of his company, Fairbank Construction Company. “Improvement and taking on new concepts and challenges keep us motivated,” Fairbank says. In 1984, he moved his office to Bainbridge Island, when expansion took off. In 2012, Fairbank opened a Seattle office, and in 2017, he welcomed two new principals: Sharen Borgias, who became president, and Mark Tiedeman, who became vice president. Today, they all share ownership in one of the Northwest’s finest home-building firms. “We started doing custom homes, but then we had clients who wanted an office building, mixed-use project or restaurant they wanted to build out,” Fairbank says. “We do commercial, multi-family, churches, schools, retail and offices, as well as homes.” And all share one common ingredient: a strong desire to do the project with intention and quality. When asked what’s around the corner, Fairbank says he’d like to do more work in Pierce and Snohomish Counties, and in Kitsap County, specifically Bremerton. A true Pacific Northwesterner at heart.

In what ways do you include the client in your creative process? We listen! We hear what is said, but also stay alert about what isn’t said. Each of us has a different way of voicing our creativity and it’s our job to help the client find their voice. Is there anything else you’d like to add? When you think about construction, it’s hard work, often in inclement weather and fraught with risk. The satisfaction of completing a project and the journey along the way make it all worthwhile.

Ask the Expert

LANWAY GENERAL CONTRACTOR When asked what building style Lanway General Contractor is known for, president Erik Schelbert says it’s not just great style, but also exceptional quality, that separates high-touch custom home builders. “Our main focus in all types of construction is unsurpassed quality,” he says. “We think attention to every detail—not just the things you see on the surface—will lead to a quality product that you can feel when you walk through it.” This philosophy was established from the beginning by the firm’s founder, Jim Lanway, who demanded the highest quality and integrity from the day he opened the business in 1976. A little over a decade later, Erik took the reins with vice president Sheri Schelbert, and thanks to the help of a fantastic crew of employees and tradesmen, they have taken the company to the top of its industry. Until 2002, Lanway General kept its focus on custom homes in upscale developments, but a unique project on an exciting site sharpened its focus, elevating its exceptional quality and approach to new heights. “Our reputation brought us more custom and commercial projects, including restaurants and custom tenant improvement projects that further increased our standing in the industry,” Sheri says. “It’s nice to bring fresh ideas from all the architects and designers we have worked with over the years, to both the residential and commercial side.”

1

To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? Maintaining extremely high quality and customer satisfaction as our top priorities has been the critical factor in our continued and increasing success. Is there anything else you’d like to add? Lanway is a hands-on company. I am personally on-site daily and take an intense personal approach to every aspect of the construction process. The result is not only happy clients, but repeat clients and referrals. Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work and approach to it? Our influences come from every customer, architect, designer, employee and subcontractor we work with. This approach brings a great deal of satisfaction for everyone.

NB DESIGN GROUP Principals of NB Design Group, James Fung and Whitney Maehara point to place and space as their main design influences. Weighing in closely behind—travel, craftsmanship and clients also provide ongoing inspiration, whether experiencing great design across the globe; watching the skills of creators at work; or seeing how clients’ stories are reflected in their homes. “NBDG is best known for our breadth of styles and creating spaces that are reflective of the client’s personalities and lifestyles,” they say. “We like to incorporate varying styles to create layered, fun environments.” While NBDG has focused primarily on high-end residential interiors throughout its past 30-plus years, it has expanded its reach, designing private aircrafts, watercrafts and executive offices. “Our major milestone has been the opportunity to work on projects and with clients outside of the Pacific Northwest, including Montana, Florida, California, New York and Canada,” they say. Beginning every project with open conversation and a keen understanding of the client, NBDG strives to provide creative solutions for the built environment. “Our goal is to maintain our history of meaningful design, while adding a fresh perspective that is timeless and one-of-a-kind,” they say.

Ask the Expert What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in? A speakeasy bar, because who doesn’t like to drink in style?

What are some of the ways clients can work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Don’t be afraid to give honest feedback; this creates the strong foundation and vision needed for a successful project. What is the first project that put your company on the map? The Private Penthouse at the Four Seasons Residences and the First Hill Penthouse—both in Seattle.
