“The spaces we live in have a profound effect on our well-being. Colors, textures and materials are just some of the tangible elements that affect how we feel in our daily lives. But creating a truly inspiring environment goes beyond look and feel. It is essential to know how energy flows through every room, and how light interacts with every surface. We distill individual preferences, translate personal styles, and incorporate worldly fascinations to help each client realize their dream of living in a home that brings them deep joy and an inspired quality of life.” - Kari Arendsen, Founder and Principal Designer

EDITOR’S LETTER

Casa Luis Barragán in Mexico City, shown right and below, inspired this issue’s Spotlight feature with its contemporary aesthetic and global influence.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME There is much to debate/discuss/enthuse about architecture and design. Yet, of this I am emphatic: Good design has to be firmly rooted to a place. There are buildings and aesthetics that we couldn’t imagine anywhere else but from where they sprout.

We lean into a host of cultural influences in this issue of Luxe, with design narratives as varied and interesting as the decorative details that are expressed at the hands of the makers. So, take a spin through our pages and ‘round-the-world reporting. Then, always, return home, for it’s the best way to measure how far you’ve come.

Take the graphic elegance and saturated hues of contemporary Mexican architect Luis Barragán’s residence-turned-museum in Mexico City. Would this poetic home be as wondrous in Miami, in Los Angeles? I recently visited, and think not. Barragán’s spatial strategy and brilliant play of light and shadow elicit a sense of reverence and respect appropriate to its root. His masterful residence and studio were the inspiration for our Spotlight story inside.

Variety SHOP THREE STANDOUT COMPANIES CURATE GLOBAL DESIGN FINDS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

nternational furnishings and accessories have long been synonymous with elevated living—each piece’s highly crafted form and place of origin adding a dynamic layer. And whether it makes a grand statement as a room’s centerpiece or plays a supporting role as an accent, these global finds stand out as bold characters. Luxe explores three companies offering wares by both emerging and established artisans from around the world that were previously only available to the trade. Let the hunt begin!

Cool Factor: Before the existence of its three shops and online presence, Urban Zen was founded more than 20 years ago by Donna Karan as a philanthropic endeavor and center for change. During a trip to Bali, where she sourced and manufactured her original furnishing pieces (and continues to do so), she felt a true connection to the people and their craft. Traveling around the world since and working with artisans globally, Karan’s intention is to give back in a larger sense through health care initiatives, education and cultural preservation to the places she sources from. What you’ll find: Representing more than 45 artisans

in 20 different countries, Karan’s two shops in New York (Manhattan and Sag Harbor) and one in Los Angeles offer not only furnishings, accessories and clothing designed by the fashion guru herself and made by the artisans from countries across the world, but they also function as multidisciplinary spaces for seminars, meditation classes, events and other happenings that help to promote the philanthropic arm of Karan’s initiative. Up Next: A big proponent for helping the citizens of Haiti, Karan just collaborated with Kenneth Cole on an upcoming footwear project set to launch in July. In her words: “Urban Zen is about forming communities who want to help create change that is needed in the world.”

ADORNO Cool Factor: The brainchild of Martin Clausen and Kristian Snorre Andersen, Adorno is an online platform that empowers independent designers from 16 cities worldwide by featuring their unique or limited-edition pieces that have been carefully selected by local curators. Revamping the traditional collectible design market often dominated by physical galleries, Adorno works as a digital gallery with a simple and transparent price structure that benefits both the buyer and the designer by connecting them directly. What you’ll find: Inspired by the agriculture and fishing co-operatives in their native Denmark, where individuals prosper working as a unit, the Adorno platform enables autonomous collaborations between curators and designers from urban communities such as São Paulo, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Beirut and Berlin. Up Next: Believing design should be experienced in real life, the company is in its final stages of implementing 3D technology and high-quality imagery to create the “second” best way customers can inspect and try pieces in their home. In their words: “We hope to contribute to a creative society that celebrates diversity between cultures by providing designers with better opportunities to realize their own dreams and visions as creators.”

The Cocktail light by Hanna Anonen (left) and Not only hollow Cabinet by Dirk vander Kooij are both available through Adorno.

The Invisible Collection offers limited-edition pieces, like the Nomad Stools by Charles Zana, shown flanking the wall, and Chair Conversation by Vincent Darre (right).

Cool Factor: For the first time, exclusive pieces made by a number of the most esteemed names in the business, like Pierre Yovanovitch, Thierry Lemaire and Caroline Sarkozy, are available for purchase, and in most cases, exclusively on Isabelle Dubern-Mallevays and Anna Zaoui’s site, The Invisible Collection. Prior to the launch of the website in 2016, these pieces remained hidden and inaccessible, and one would have to commission these designers for a project to snag one of their sought-after pieces. What you’ll find: Initiated as an outlet to share the pair’s passion for design with a broader clientele, their highly-curated model offers access to furnishings and objets of the utmost quality all made to order by highly skilled creators and architects from around the world such as Bismut & Bismut, Charles Zana and Atelier Vime. Up Next: The details are still hush-hush, but the chic duo, who are based between Paris, London and New York, will bring The Invisible Collection to life in the Big Apple with a new exhibit this November for a second stateside visit since their premiere at Art Basel Miami in 2018. In their words: “It is very exciting to meet with a designer and discover their work, understand their approach, and then select the best pieces for the site. We always look at the work with a curatorial eye.”

Out of AFRICA SOUTHERN GUILD BRINGS DESIGN BEYOND THE BORDERS OF THE WORLD’S SECOND LARGEST CONTINENT.

Southern Guild recently showcased a Dokter and Misses collection, which included this limitededition Rat Trap cabinet made of hand-painted steel.

When Zizipho Poswa was growing up in the small South African town of Umtata, there were no art schools or creative role models. As a child, she made paper sculptures, doll clothes and drawings, but even after leaving her home to study art at university, becoming an internationally renowned artist seemed to be an unreachable dream. But then, after forming Imiso Ceramics with Andile Dyalvane, she met Trevyn and Julian McGowan of Southern Guild, and her horizons expanded beyond Africa. The McGowans started Southern Guild, Africa’s only gallery dedicated to limited-edition and collectible design and art, in 2008 to support design created in Trevyn’s home country. “We returned to South Africa after living in London for several years, and we noticed the extraordinary work being produced without representation,” says Trevyn. “We felt we could provide the opportunity for more people to see and understand African design.” Through Southern Guild’s Cape Town gallery and international exhibitions, they have introduced the work of modern African artists (such as Poswa and Dyalvane) to collectors around the globe, and the response has been enthusiastic. “I’m exhibiting at top international shows like Salon Art + Design in New York and Design Miami,” says Poswa, who now resides in Cape Town. “I’ve sold my pieces around the world.” According to Trevyn, collectors—including a large and growing client base in the United States—are reacting to both the caliber and the soul of the work. “Fine art and design in Africa is very forward-thinking, but largely made by hand,” she says. “The hallmark of design from this continent are pieces with a strong narrative. Many of them tell very personal stories about the maker and his or her journey and most pieces possess a sense of wit and humor, but they are usually functional as well.”

Poswa’s work, which includes colorful vessels, is a case in point. “I reference my culture, growing up as young Xhosa girl in the rural Eastern Cape, and express my love for Africa as a continent,” she says. “I draw inspiration from our traditional masks, fabrics, textures, beadwork and clothing.” Some of her works translate the color and patterns of African textiles onto vases, bowls and plates. The art of sculptor Stanislaw Trzebinski, also represented by Southern Guild, is a personal commentary on the often-eroding relationship between people and nature. It’s a tale he knows well, as he currently lives in Cape Town but spent his childhood in the East African bush and on the ocean with his father, surfing and fishing. His bronze works (which range from figurative decorative arts to tables) often feature coral and other watery motifs, sometimes married to the human form. “I’m looking at the symbiotic relationship we humans have to the natural world that has been all but lost today, with the exceptions of a few indigenous cultures,” he says. “I want to entice the viewer to take a closer look at the work itself, but also at how we relate to the planet we call home.” Asking buyers to take a closer look at African design is precisely the goal of the McGowans, as well. “To look is to experience the warmth and the personality of Africa. There’s a sense of non-conformism and joy,” Trevyn says. And by looking, she says you might be creating the next Poswa or Trzebinski, explaining: “Our focus lies in emboldening industry heroes and shaping careers. We want to put future design leaders on a global platform and help them be all that they can.”

RADAR / DEBUT

Tactile elements play a starring role in Frank Ponterio’s debut collection with Arteriors. The designer conjured ink-like etchings inspired by real-life tattoos on the Flint Containers (bottom) and used handwoven rope on the Johyo Chandelier and Vendee Mirror (left). “The materials are those that people want to interact with and touch,” he says. The Salotto Cabinet (below) is the crown jewel of the collection.

La Dolce VITA

FRANK PONTERIO’S DEBUT COLLECTION WITH ARTERIORS STRIKES A SWEET SPOT BETWEEN ROUGH AND RARIFIED. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY PORTRAIT BY BERT VANDERVEEN

As a first-generation Italian American, interior designer Frank Ponterio spent a month every summer with his family exploring the beaches and small towns of Southern Italy, often fitting in a trip to the major metropolises of Venice or Rome. It was on these visits when he observed the attention to detail and sense of pride the Italians took in fabricating everyday features like a chimney or a handmade door handle. “Everything is beautiful and well thought-out. It’s a true Italian’s approach—whether in an artwork or how pavers on the city streets are laid. There is pride in the craft,” says the designer. Some decades later, the essence of those qualities are on display in Ponterio’s debut collection with Arteriors: a 28-piece compendium of mirrors, lamps and accessories that honors his Italian heritage with a modern perspective. His white-oak Salotto Cabinet, the crown jewel of the collection, was inspired by a pair of bronze doors at the Villa Necchi in Milan. The cabinet beckons

with front panels wrapped in vellum and punched with decorative cut-outs offering a glimpse of what’s inside. “We gave so much attention to that piece,” says Ponterio. Still, the collection isn’t all romance and history. The designer drew on his grittier, more urban upbringing in Chicago for many of the pieces, including the Joey Tray, inspired by a childhood acquaintance, who was “a little rough around the edges,” says Ponterio. “I was playing with thickcut hide and how to join the corners. The idea of brass studs came to me, and I thought about adding another accent—brass knuckles—to it. I sent it to the Arteriors team and said, ‘You’re going to think I’m crazy, but here’s what I want to do.’ It’s an urban nod to Chicago.” Blending approachability with luxury is a hallmark of Ponterio’s work. It’s also one of the qualities that attracted Arteriors to collaborate with the designer. “Many pieces are rooted in Frank’s love of entertaining, and in his philosophy that the home should be a welcoming and inviting place,” says Mark Moussa, founder and creative director of Arteriors. “At the same time, he is unwavering in his appreciation for materials of the finest quality.” For a designer who finds comfort in a moody cocktail lounge and a breezy, beachside locale, it’s apparent his collection reflects both sentiments. “There are two sides of me—the really urban guy and the guy who loves the coasts. It goes back to Italy,” says Ponterio. “I like mixing things that are rugged with those that are a bit more refined.”

ALEXA HAMPTON Interviewed by Carrier and Company

You’ve expressed, “It’s been a no-boundaries design process with Theodore Alexander.” What’s been your favorite exploration? I loved visiting Theodore Alexander’s foundry and seeing all of their metalwork capabilities. Sometimes simply picking hardware can be a drag, but this wasn’t. They can do anything! You mentioned taking ideas from art, antiques and travel. I am an eternal “Euro wannabe.” I so wish I were European, that I married one and made three little Euros! That said, rich design traditions are everywhere, and the Far East has always held a vast influence over beautiful interiors. A touch of chinoiserie, a chow leg, red lacquer, bamboo motifs: These are all firm members of the design canon. Any Alexa fave that you are going to use over and over in projects? I am excited to play with the metal console tables immediately. I am also really psyched to have a Napoleon III slipper chair at the ready. That’s the best part of having a collection: You can selfishly make what your heart most wants!

CARRIER AND COMPANY

Interviewed by Richard Mishaan First off, the Century Collection is stunning. How do you find a balance between creative, new designs, without straying too far from the roots of your brand? Thank you, Richard! We wanted our collection to be reflective of our assembled interiors, which express dualities—a mix of simple with ornate, sheen with hand and glamour with organic earthiness. For us, having standout pieces, along with simpler forms is very much on brand. How do you divide up your roles as husband and wife once you’re ‘at work’ and how do you successfully partner your visions? While we generally share an aligned point of view, we each have our own strengths, interests and inspirations. It is our differences that actually make us stronger—we challenge each other’s choices, but ultimately focus on the shared goals to temper ego with perspective. What do people overlook when designing that can be found in your collection? Versatility. We designed pieces that can move from room-to-room or coast-to-coast. Good design travels well!

RYAN KORBAN

Interviewed by Alexa Hampton Tell me about the process for your new EJ Victor collection. Are you a cocktail napkin conceptualist? Where do the ideas start? Mine start in a bottle of tequila! For me it was daunting, but then I realized I was making it more complicated than it needed to be. I started in retail and commercial space design, so I’ve been designing custom fixtures and furnishings for my entire career. I went back to all my favorite pieces I had designed for brands like Balenciaga but changed the comfort and proportions for people to enjoy in their own homes. How do you describe your collection as a whole and what influenced you? It’s simple: It’s the idea of new luxury; luxury for a new generation. It’s inspired by the French 1920s with the use of interesting materials like suede and plaster. It’s meant to feel elevated but can also be used in a casual way. What pieces are you taking home with you? Oh, good question: a pair of Holland side chairs and a Foch Chandelier!

RICHARD MISHAAN

Interviewed by Ryan Korban Do your Colombian roots play a role in your new collection with Theodore Alexander? The fact that Colombia has produced so many creatives means that there is something inspiring us all. Colombia has rich artisans and sophisticated crafts that are both in such demand at the moment. As they say, you can take little Ricky out of Colombia, but you can’t take Colombia out of little Ricky! What were your go-to materials? I love to see texture and grain in the woods we select. I find that there are so many beautiful patterns that if accentuated can add to the richness of the design. I am lucky that Theodore Alexander’s manufacturing allowed me to work with fine wood finishes, metals and hand-painted panels—the sky was the limit. Who do you see living with your new collection? The Theodore Alexander client is already a sophisticated one. I designed this collection to have versatility, to coexist with furniture the client may already own and to translate well everywhere around the globe. Younger clients may not have some of the more classical pieces, so it’s fun to mix them in with contemporary furniture.

A LA CARTE AUDREY AT THE HAMMER

The Hammer Museum’s new restaurant, Audrey, elevates Westwood’s dining scene with a look that’s as enticing as its menu. Designed, or reimagined, by Michael Maltzan Architects, who have been working with the museum on a multi-phase renovation and expansion since 1999, and London-based firm Fettle, the striking indoor-outdoor space reflects the flavors of restaurateur Soa Davies Forrest and chef Lisa Giffen’s cuisine: lamb kofta, Swiss chard with anchovy vinaigrette and preserved lemon, hand-cut tagliatelle with mushroom Bolognese and smoked fiore sardo, plus inspired cocktails and wines from small producers. “Our goal was to design a contemporary yet comfortable space that would be a destination for museum-goers and for Los Angeles as a whole,” says Fettle director and co-founder Tom Parker. “We developed a layout in which every seat has a fantastic view, and chose fabrics to complement the food— olive green and orange-pink tones represent the earthy shades of the Mediterranean,” he explains, also noting the colorful tile installation by prominent Cuban-American artist Jorge Pardo whose eye-catching pendant lights sparkle inside the eatery and from trees in the courtyard. “The design language blends neatly with the existing museum aesthetic while connecting the restaurant to the museum’s public space,” adds MMA principal Gee-ghid Tse. And the public is more than welcome to enjoy a meal or just a drink at the 30-foot-long bar even if viewing one of the museum’s provocative exhibitions wasn’t on their menu.

collaboration photos: courtesy thomas callaway pattern works. a la carte photo: courtesy audrey at the hammer.

How better to mark 30 years in business for designer Thomas Callaway than to add new patterns to his Left Bank fabric collection for Holland & Sherry. He chatted with Luxe recently about how he’s celebrating and what makes these designs so personal. thomascallaway.com How did the collection begin? As an homage to my time studying art history in Paris and Amsterdam. Matisse, Soutine, Braque: They all left an impression. And when I got back to painting, it seemed right for a textile line. We launched in 2015 with nine patterns. Now, having won accolades, we’ve added three original patterns—that’s why they truly blend. Any favorites? Camargue (top), which is based on French saddle blankets. There’s an almost Navajo element that reflects my love of the American West. Who’s been using the fabrics? The Wiseman Group in San Francisco, Blackberry Farm in Tennessee and Soho House for their European and Philippines properties. In what ways have you celebrated three decades in design? We’ve lunched, dined, had champagne and got right back at it. There isn’t much time to relax! We’re refreshing homes of longtime clients, designing an art studio, and we have two large houses on the drawing boards. 098 / luxesource.com

The Santa Monica Proper Hotel is an adaptive reuse project that melds a 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival building by Arthur E. Harvey with a contemporary addition by Howard Laks Architects. Inside, designer Kelly Wearstler riffs on the historic side’s Moorish details while focusing on neutral hues and natural materials for a distinctly Californian feel. “We were intentional about working with local artists to bring a truly authentic experience,” she says. The 271-room hotel’s restaurant, Onda—Spanish for “wave”—is headed by chefs Jessica Koslow of Sqirl and Gabriela Cámara, formerly of Cala in San Francisco and Contramar in Mexico City, so expect a menu that fuses Latin and Californian influences. Other highlights: the Surya Ayurvedic Spa, which offers Transcendental Meditation classes through the David Lynch Foundation, and 8,000 square feet of event space. Forgot your surfboard? No worries. We’ve also been holding dinners—including one at John Lautner’s Garcia House in the Hollywood Hills. How has Mud evolved over the years? We’ve added new shapes and colors to meet our personal needs, such as bakeware, the lighting range and party pieces, but we’ve maintained our simple aesthetic and use only the highest-quality porcelain from Limoges, France. We’re a global brand but we still craft each piece by hand in our Sydney studio. What will visitors find at the L.A. shop? The whole range—every shape and color! ITINERARY PAUL BASILE

Designer Paul Basile has been quietly taking the San Diego (and beyond) hospitality scene by storm with restaurants like Morning Glory, Plan Check and Born & Raised. “When I moved here, I was almost 20 and had just withdrawn from college,” says the Detroit native and fourth-generation builder. “I was interested in becoming an architect but didn’t know what to do. I fumbled around and fell in love with designing furniture.” Commissions soon came rolling in and after a stint running his own restaurant, The Guild in Barrio Logan, Basile launched his eponymous design, build and fabrication firm. Now a local of some 25 years, he’s sharing a few of his favorite haunts. basilestudio.com

“TECHNOLOGY SHOULD SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE, NOT COMPLICATE IT.”

Continuity of technology is a critical component of home renovations. At Modern Home Systems, a San Diego-based company specializing in home automation, designated home theaters and outdoor entertainment centers, the objective of each residential project is to find a solution that fits the homeowner’s lifestyle while incorporating as much of their existing technology as possible. “People come to us to create seamlessness among their technology,” says Otto Benson, president of Modern Home Systems. Intelligent Illumination In constant development, lighting design from a technological perspective is particularly noteworthy. “Lighting control has become a huge part of our industry,” Benson shares. “We have the capability to create scenes with your lighting, whether that be to fit your schedule or for the lights to naturally dim and brighten depending on the actual sunlight coming through the home.”

When Bob Allred founded Juniper House, it was with an intention to specialize, rather than “be everything to everyone.” In the years since, the company has become a premier resource for outdoor furnishings in the United States, and its Designer Series has introduced an array of internationally acclaimed creators to the domestic market. So, what is the Juniper team looking for when it sources a new line? In Allred’s mind, exceptional outdoor furniture balances aesthetics with performance. “With outdoor furnishings, you must consider functionality, execution and usefulness, because you are dealing with harsh climates and weather that can affect the longevity of an object,” he explains. “Powder-coated extruded aluminum in beautiful shapes, or the engineering that goes into a well-made umbrella, outdoor fabric or exterior rug—these things excite me as much as the overall design. Someone worked through these solutions for months, maybe years, to perfect them for their particular end use.”

MARK OF THE MAKER

PAUL FERRANTE paulferrante.com |

paulferranteinc

The production methods of custom lighting company Paul Ferrante are the opposite of cutting-edge, which, contrary to popular thinking, is a good thing. “The handmade, handcrafted and hand-finished products are what set Paul Ferrante apart. The company continues to use time-honored methods,” owner Tommy Raynor says. Spanning three generations and nearly 60 years, the family-owned and -operated business has decades of experience and expertise to draw from. Since business partner and founder Paul Ferrante’s passing 25 years ago, Raynor, along with over 60 employees, has taken the reins with a hands-on approach from manufacturing to product selection. Everything begins with the design, and the designs are born from a deep understanding and appreciation of what has come before. The knowledge of scale and proportion and the ability to get it right in the translation is Paul Ferrante’s signature. Additionally, the company distinguishes itself by its custom capabilities and being able to work with ideas and make them a reality.

The Finishing Touch

Keeping It Interesting

Paul Ferrante recently introduced an exclusive finish innovation, years in the making. This beautiful Faux Bronze lacquer finish is the result of a labor-intensive, multilayered process that provides a convincingly realistic bronze finish on our iron pieces at a fraction of the cost of working in bronze.

Unlike most other high-end lighting and furniture manufacturers, Paul Ferrante introduces new products almost monthly, and has over 1,000 handmade examples of custom lighting and furniture in the product line.

A feeling of nostalgia overcame Matthew Grzywinski and Amador Pons upon first visiting this former textile warehouse and showroom they later transformed into the Whitworth Locke Hotel in England. Having worked on 19th-century masonry buildings in their native New York, the space’s quality of light, Victorian bones, materials and textures were familiar to the architects. Welcoming spaces, like The Conservatory bar (shown), pay tribute to the local neighborhood vibes and original architecture.

SCENE-STEALING BASES

“Dramatic and style-defining bases stole the show this High Point Market as showcased here with the perfectly proportioned, rounded shape of the Mr. Brown London Misty Dining table. NATURAL CONSIDERATIONS “The most prominent trend I saw at High Point Market was the interpretation of nature, not only in color (green), but also in product construction and application. Amidst all the efficiency that technology provides, now more than ever, there’s a deep need for humans to reconnect to nature.” Selamat, Poppy Armoire

POSTMODERN PLEASURE

“Strong geometric forms reminiscent of the Postmodern movements of the ‘70s and ‘80s are back in a major way— and more glamorous than ever! Carrier and Company for Century Furniture, Bradley Furniture and Ryan Korban for EJ Victor all explored perfect squares, circles and racetrack forms to channel these Memphis-style vibes with mixed metals and wood tones. Sleek and sexy for sure!”

MOD MOMENT

HIGH-END DESIGNS PUSH THE ENVELOPE WHEN IT COMES TO MODULAR KITCHEN STYLES. Modular kitchens aren’t a new concept. They were first introduced in Europe as an efficient, low-cost alternative for homes being built in a post-World War I era but have reemerged quite differently today. While these early spaces were mostly standardized or fitted, today, modular kitchens, which are made up of specific modules or components that work together, have evolved to be stylish, practical and a welcome option in a world of too many choices. Several contemporary kitchen companies offer modular plans that have a set style or aesthetic 180 / luxesource.com

but can also be customized to create a design that is very much original. Piero Lissoni, the art director for Boffi, agrees the future of the kitchen is modular, and that these spaces should include “simple elements, where areas of work and life come together.” For the latest Combine series, Lissoni dreamed up a selection of functional monoblocs in varying sizes that can be used with worktops and extractable tables to fabricate a kitchen that is still personalized for its user. Vipp, a Danish family-run kitchen company that recently opened its first U.S. outpost, understands that design is a very personal endeavor. The firm's hope is that once a modular kitchen is installed, it can act as furniture that can be packed up and brought from home to home or passed on through generations, an idea they coined as the ‘heirloom kitchen.’ While Vipp offers four sleek module units including two islands, a wall component and a taller storage piece, it sticks to one color when it comes to finishes: black. “We found that endless colors and configurations feel

unnecessarily overwhelming,” says Sofie Egelund, Vipp’s concept director whose great-grandfather founded the brand in 1939. The Vipp ethos of less is more allows for the kitchen to work harmoniously with the rest of the home’s high design. Modular offerings are also a hit with interior designers. Paris-based Sarah Lavoine says, “The kitchen is very technical and relying on a company whose expertise is focused on this area allows me to be more creative in other rooms.” With so many sophisticated materials and configurations, Lavoine is surprised by how custom these modular kitchens can be but without the time-consuming installation and planning that usually follows. New York designer Alberto Villalobos understands there is no need to sacrifice style or aesthetics with the number of luxury options out there. “I utilize every tool available to me and modular kitchens have proven they are the practical and polished choice in many circumstances,” he says.

English LESSON TURKISH Delights Australian design duo Tim and Sylvia Hill know a thing or two about beach days, so they decided to create the ideal accessory for long, summer days at the sea with the Dreamtime towel. Inspired by the incredibly soft Turkish peshtemal, the towel’s high-quality cotton is sourced from Turkey's southern region of Buldan and will only get better with each wash. For Thomas Furse-Roberts and Graeme Martinow, the directors of architecture and interior design firm Boundary Space, their design ethos for this London master bathroom was be bold or go home. Drawing inspiration from fashion, history and pop culture, Furse-Roberts says, “We were influenced by the ’70s because it has this glamorous connotation but was also a very futuristic time period, so we wanted to channel Blondie and Pan Am here.” The homeowner is in the film industry and the designers were charged with creating a room that not only represents their client’s personality but also the surrounding Notting Hill area, which is known for a strong sense of color and creativity. WITH WANDERLUST ON THE MIND, CREATIVES ARE FLOCKING TO FAR-REACHING DESTINATIONS IN SEARCH OF ART, ARTISANS AND ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS. WRITTEN BY MARY ORE PRODUCED BY JENNIFER CONDON

Much like in the 19th century, when the Arts and Crafts movement espoused a return to the handmade in response to rampant industrialization, today’s visionary talents are turning away from technology and celebrating a return to the authentic. Bringing a modernist zeal to stone, straw, clay and textiles, creatives around the globe are reviving traditional crafts from an entirely new point of view. A desire for connection—to the materials, the process and to the region’s history—is at the heart of this new wave, which favors individuality and the sustained focus on genuine inspiration. Architects, too, are taking cues from their country’s past to build anew or overhaul the old, all the while creating work that’s startling fresh. There’s plenty of luxury, too, in the richness of the resources, the attention to details and the elegance and originality of the vision. Read on as we tour an array of design destinations where authenticity and modernism meet.

PORTUGAL Minimalist architectural silhouettes, exposed wood construction and high-end whiteon-white interiors give a bohemian-chic vibe to the Sublime Comporta. As the go-to boutique resort for this under-the-radar vacation destination, the Sublime Comporta recently reopened after a complete renovation that included redecorating the rooms in the traditions of the region, adding one of the largest “bio” pools in Europe and building nine poolside suites on stilts. With both a beachy and woodland Zen feel—stretches of unspoiled white sandy coastline lay to the west and forests of umbrella pines and cork trees to the east—its stunning locale is the perfect place to reconnect with nature. It’s also a glamorous and restful basecamp for excursions to nearby villages to discover the indigenous handicrafts for which the region is known. sublimecomporta.pt

Famous for its azulejo-tiled buildings and artisanal ceramics, Portugal is brimming with talented potters who are drawing on the country’s ceramicist heritage while mixing in their own perspectives. As part of their home decor collection, David Pimentel and Arren Williams of Casa Cubista craft bold and bright ceramics (left) from their studio on the Algarve Coast. Oriente Station by Santiago Calatrava: It was in Lisbon that I first discovered this architect and I love everything he creates. He has works in London and France and was the creative mind behind lower Manhattan’s Oculus. His buildings are filled with energy, while being very dynamic and powerful. Promontorio Headquarters: The impressive interior staircase in this architecture firm’s office is made of concrete, which normally feels heavy, but the curves are graceful and light and entice you to find out where it leads. Prado: As a culinary institution, of course the food is great, but the architecture is simple and precise. The high, white walls and ceiling are filled with long tendrils of hanging plants making it a refreshing atmosphere to dine.

POSSESSIONS For exciting new design, look no further than Luteca or Ewe—both channel modern principles through artisanal techniques. Luteca offers original and classic designs, such as the Line chair (above), designed by Michael van Beuren, a Bauhaus-trained American who moved to the city in the 1930s. At the design collective Ewe, natural materials are transformed into sculptural collectibles. One of the stars of the Mexican art scene is Galeriá OMR, in the Roma district (site of the Oscar-winning film), which is celebrated for discovering and cultivating some of the country’s most innovative talents, including Jose Dávila, Pia Camil, Gabriel Rico and Yann Gerstberger, a French artist who moved to the city seven years ago. Gluing hand-dyed mop thread and industrial fabric scraps onto vinyl, Gerstberger draws on myriad influences—Nigerian folk art, Surrealism, graffiti—to create vibrant works that pay homage to Mexico’s rich textile heritage. galeriaomr.com

Brazil’s lively design scene lured back Brunno Jahara, a native who had decamped to Italy to study and work in architecture. Founding his own studio in Rio de Janeiro upon his return, he’s become known for his playful decor made with materials that range from textiles to recycled plastic. DESIGN DOYENNE

With her second collection for the high-end furniture brand Artefacto, architect Patricia Anastassiadis of Anastassiadis Arquitetos showcases her gifts for sumptuous minimalism in pieces like the Banco Vivika (bottom) and spaces such as the lobby bar of the new Palacio Tangara hotel in São Paulo (left). Here she shares insight into what makes her native Brazil so special. anastassiadis.com.br, artefacto.com How do you define the region’s design? Brazilian modernist design is celebrated worldwide, and it was created mostly by

immigrants and their descendants. What truly marks this region’s design is diversity—we live in a cultural melting pot where countless references coexist. What exemplifies that look? Amazing woodwork, marvelous ceramics (with pieces from Marajó Island, for instance) and unique materials (such as the golden grass found at Jalapão) that create beautiful accessories. Did growing up in Brazil influence your approach? My architecture practice is based in São Paulo, a city with a rich and interesting international scene, and my work is marked by this diversity. Also, I’ve always been interested in classical art and architecture, which gives us a deeper understanding of the world. When we understand traditional design, we’re able to create original work of our own. Tell us about the new collaboration with Artefacto. We are always looking to develop timeless pieces with a holistic appeal. And despite their strong visual appeal, they’re not necessarily related to trends. I believe a good design piece ruptures its timeline without losing its aesthetic or functional relevance.

The Design Museum Holon, enveloped in sinuous steel bands in shades of red, is a fitting site for the celebration of Israeli decorative arts. Its iconic façade, the vision of architect Ron Arad, is singular, as is the museum’s mission: As the country’s sole design museum, it is devoted to educating visitors through events and exhibitions about international design and contemporary culture. But it’s the evolving permanent collection, which encompasses Israeli design from the 1930s to the present, that offers new perspectives on the country’s aesthetic legacy and puts into context the energy invigorating a new crop of Israeli designers today. dmh.org.il

MOYA LIVING “Moya Living nods to yesterday, with a modern elegance.” This is how founder and CEO Moya O’Neill describes her company, which creates sophisticated cabinetry solutions in powder-coated steel. O’Neill herself first discovered the niche after years of developing lab furniture for Fortune 100 companies. “I had an epiphany,” she says. “Beyond building labs, steel could be used to make cabinetry and tables that don’t have the limitations we see with wood or laminates.” And so, Moya Living was born. Today, it’s known for a masterful marriage of durability and performance in color and texture. “In terms of style, it really depends on the client,” O’Neill says, in reference to the company’s approach to aesthetics. “We have created kitchens that are nostalgic, modern, timeless, urban and even minimalistic.” Still, she points to three characteristics as being common to all Moya Living designs: sophistication, warmth and function. No matter the parameters, the client is an integral part of the process. “Relationships, with industry professionals and end users alike, are essential to us,” O’Neill says. “We work directly with each client, and operate with a love of design, adaptability, responsiveness and a desire to learn.”

What influences and inspirations inform your work? My parents. From my mother, I learned how to put a home together through unusual choices. My father was an upcycler, which is a polite way of saying he couldn’t walk past anything that was being discarded. He instilled in me an understanding of business and promoting what you love. Which type of project would you love to take on? We enjoy working with loft-style residential units like those in hotels and apartment complexes. The nature of these environments offers a challenge, and they are well-suited to take advantage of our product’s longevity.

PALM PACIFIC CONSTRUCTION Over the course of 15 years and with 100-plus completed projects, Palm Pacific Construction, a firm specializing in custom luxury home building and renovations, has proven its commitment to the finest, sleekest results. “Our philosophy is to create the most detailed product,” owner Scott Cullens says. “Any builder with a license should be able to construct a house, but the real work is in the finish. I dream about the final pictures on our website well before the first nail is hit.” Those photos convey a stunning attention to detail, especially considering the stylistic depth they showcase. While known for its contemporary residences and the restoration of midcentury modern structures to their purest forms, Palm Pacific Construction has executed a range of aesthetics to perfection. Hollywood Regency, Spanish, transitional—the PPC team tackles all this, and more. Just as his firm has mastered the art of multiplicity, Cullens himself might be called a modern Renaissance man. In addition to Palm Pacific Construction, he owns a barber shop, and a health and beauty company. And it’s all based in the place Cullens calls, “the coolest, hippest, most famous little city in the world”: Palm Springs. He credits the desirable location, in part, with bringing a host of impressive clients to Palm Pacific Construction’s doors. From industry leaders and CEOs to celebrities, the firm works with individuals who understand drive and intention as well as Cullens does. “All money is green, but those who have worked hard to achieve their dreams are a joy to learn from, associate with and work for,” Cullens says.

Ask the Expert First project that put your company on the map? We built a Palm Springs residence designed by Stuart Silk Architects, and the process was filmed for A&E’s Extreme Builds. Watching it on television (with a little drama thrown in) was fun, to say the least. Tips for clients to make the design experience more rewarding? We have had clients who make it clear they have no design skills and do not wish to be a part of the process, but I encourage input along the way regardless, so we can build their home, not a hotel room.

BASSMAN BLAINE HOME The timeless and sophisticated interiors of Bassman Blaine Home first came to life as a favor. Shortly after designing a friend’s luxury vacation rental within Ho’olei at the Grand Wailea on Maui, Ken Bassman received a call from the resort’s director, who wanted to know who he was and if he could be hired for other owners in the development. Fifteen referrals later, Maui and Hawaii’s other islands were abuzz about Bassman Blaine. And the reputation has only spread in the years following. “Since our first project in 2008, we have completed more than 600 projects for approximately 350 unique clients,” Bassman shares. “We have worked in four countries and 17 states, as well as all of the major Hawaiian Islands.” Today, the firm works on high-end primary residences and secondary homes alike, from Hawaii and the Caribbean to Orange County, collaborating with architects and builders all the way. “We have become so connected to the incredible trade professionals here in Orange County that we are particularly excited to take on more local projects,” Bassman says. In pursuit of this goal, Bassman Blaine recently purchased a building in Irvine and turned it into a 22,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. It even includes a 7,000-square-foot showroom in which clients can browse, brainstorm and collaborate. “We have an amazing and talented team and are completely vertically integrated,” Bassman says. “We aim to be a one-stop shop, full-service in every way.”

How do you include the client in the creative process? We begin by asking them to imagine the following: ‘We’ve just presented your home to you and it looks even better than you had hoped. You have a close family member or dear friend who won’t be able to see it in person for a while. Describe it to them.’ As they answer, our team takes copious notes, which we then compare, organize and use to build the concept for our design direction.

What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? Jordan Turnbull, of Montage Residences Kapalua Bay, said of our work, ‘We continually recommend this dream team to our owners. Nancy Giangeruso has worked in residential and commercial design, development and construction since the early 1980s. Over the years, she often heard those around her lament in a similar way: “If only I had someone to manage the back office so I can get back to doing what I love.” And so, an idea formed and a firm was founded. “Designers, custom builders, general contractors and architects should spend 80 percent of their time following their own passions of building, creating or designing, which will automatically result in building their businesses and increasing their customer base,” Giangeruso says. “Let us do the rest.”

D

esigner and decorative arts dealer Tracy Averill first visited Palm Springs around a decade ago, making the trek for Modernism Week. Drawn to the area’s midcentury modern houses, he and his partner, Foster Eastman, eventually embarked on a search for their own desert getaway. Their pursuit ended with a hidden gem in the city’s Las Palmas neighborhood. “When we walked through the door, we knew it was the one,” Averill recalls. As a bonus, they were delighted to find it came completely furnished—not with typical holiday-home pieces, but with treasures by the likes of Karl Springer and Romeo Rega. As research would later reveal, the furniture was a holdover from updates done throughout the years by some of the region’s most acclaimed design names.

Originally built in the 1930s as a Spanish Revival-style bungalow, the house underwent a major renovation and expansion by renowned midcentury modern masters Hal Broderick and Arthur Elrod in 1968. The pair also created several of the custom pieces that remain today, including a sideboard in the living room. The baton then passed to society decorator Val Arnold, who infused a bolder 1980s palette still evident in furnishings such as a red-lacquered piano. As the new designer, Averill set in motion a plan to neutralize the chiefly red, purple, blue and white color scheme that Arnold had established. He also made a point of “editing things away,” he explains. “The goal was to reveal the simplicity of the architecture, which was so beautifully done by Elrod in ’68 that it didn’t need another renovation—just a tidying up.”

The living room features multiple intimate gathering spots for optimal entertaining. Averill was able to replicate the bar area’s original countertop stone for the new cabinetry set against the window. In the background, the sunken fireplace area contains an original custom sofa by Broderick and Elrod.

That process began with the walls: covering the entry in dark brown paint as a welcoming respite from the heat; coating bright white paneled walls in a relaxing neutral; and removing wallpaper—including an intense red version in the kitchen—in favor of plaster. Averill also transformed the formerly upholstered walls in the master bedroom. There, streamlined travertine flooring replaced carpet and flows into the master bathroom, where it blends with muted Elrod-era tile for a serene feel. Edits like these helped shift the focus back to midcentury architectural feats like “the wonderful use of tall glass windows and sliding doors,” says Averill. At the same time, the vaulted ceiling in the kitchen—where Averill swapped a fireplace with a banquette—evokes Spanish Revival style. “It’s all that remains from the original bungalow’s footprint,” he notes. Calming the palette also required rethinking the furnishings, and Averill worked with a few legacy items while bringing in spectacular vintage finds of his own. “Because I deal in 20th-century decorative arts, I had an affinity for the type of things that would work well here,” he says. “There’s a consistency in the quality, integrity and time period that links it all together.” Arranged into a series of intimate areas for entertaining, the living room showcases this cohesion. Its groupings include a Romeo

Rega dining table paired with Charles Hollis Jones side chairs, Milo Baughman tub chairs flanking the existing backgammon table, and a Paul Evans Cityscape étagère situated near the piano—now the room’s sole bright spot of color. However, as Averill is quick to remind, “all activity centers on the room’s sunken bar,” which still features its original granite countertop and invites guests to gather for cocktails. Visitors also have reason to congregate outside. In fact, the exterior has blossomed dramatically under Averill, Eastman and another couple with whom they co-own the residence. “What was wonderful with both the house and the gardens is there was enough of the old to make changes that don’t feel new,” says Averill. To that point, a deck with a fire pit and seating now overlooks the swimming pool, and an arbor covered in bougainvillea that dates to the 1970s was painted a cream color,

transforming it into a Marrakesh-inspired destination. Averill often enjoys breakfast here, where potted olive trees shade Guillerme et Chambron chairs from the California sun. “They’re solid oak and not meant to be outside,” he notes, “but you can get away with it in the desert.” New plantings and hedges around the perimeter ensure total privacy and add a layer of green. Averill was also able to seamlessly repair the pool after discovering boxes of decades-old original replacement tiles hidden away in storage. His designer predecessors must have anticipated the property would eventually make its way to a steward like Averill, who has lovingly breathed new life into their interpretations of the home through his own creative lens. It’s a role that suits him well. “The authenticity of this house accommodated my passion for vintage furnishings,” he says. “It was the perfect canvas.”

The living room’s Minotti sofa is one of a few new pieces among the residence’s mostly vintage furnishings. In the corner, a Paul Evans Cityscape étagère and lacquered red piano punctuate the monochromatic space, drawing the eye toward the swimming pool and well-manicured green spaces.

A House for ALL SEASONS INSIDE A HOME INSPIRED BY CLASSIC L.A. ARCHITECTURE, SOPHISTICATED SPACES FIT FOR A FAMILY. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY BARTLAM

Designer Lada Webster notes the family room is the most popular spot in this Los Angeles home. A Stark rug anchors the space, where Webster placed a custom sofa from Pearce Upholstery, a Flemming Lassen chair from Horne and a Noir coffee table. The chandelier is by RH; the artwork is by THRY.

S

tately Georgian Revival homes have dotted Los Angeles’ finest neighborhoods since the 1920s when Hollywood’s elite began commissioning masterworks from legendary architects like Roland Coate and Paul R. Williams. Fast-forward a century and it’s much the same, but this time around Georgian Transitional, as it’s called, brings added swagger. Like its predecessors, it’s designed for elegant living. What makes it different, though, is a glamour that owes more to midcentury architects—Pierre Koenig’s glass walls, for example—than to English kings. It’s a style that just makes sense in L.A., and especially for the family of former NFL superstar Tony Gonzalez. “Entertaining is a big part of their lifestyle, so the goal was to create a beautiful and inviting home to welcome friends and relatives,” says designer Lada Webster. The Gonzalezes had been living in Huntington Beach but wanted to be closer to Tony’s workplace (he’s an analyst for Fox Sports) and to his teenage son. “After failing to find a turnkey house, our real estate agent took us to see this amazing property in a neighborhood with walkable treelined streets,” recalls Tony’s wife, October. “We knew we could build our dream home.” The couple had fallen for Georgian-style architecture while living in Atlanta, where Tony, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this August, played for the Atlanta Falcons, and they knew it would fit into their new surroundings comfortably.

A casual dining area connects the family room and kitchen. The Four Hands table, surrounded by oak chairs from DRC, is extra-long to accommodate the family. Warren Christopher supplied the European oak flooring.

“I contacted Lada immediately and she lit up with excitement at the idea of building from the ground up!” says October. (Longtime friends who worked together during their early 20s, the women reconnected in 2007 when Webster joined forces with the couple on their previous home.) “So many designers can’t help but incorporate their own personal flair, and I knew that Lada wasn’t that type.” From there, everything fell into place. A friend recommended general contractor Craig Williams, who in turn suggested architect Philip Vertoch. “Philip understood that we’re a big family with kids ranging from 4 to 17, so functionality was vital,” she adds. Early on, Vertoch remembers talking with the couple about ease and an open ground floor—“something that could suit 200 guests or just 6 to 8,” he says. The resulting plan includes a two-story main house, expansive back terraces, a swimming pool and a pool house with a gym,

plus a sports court. (A basement offers additional living areas and a multilevel garage.) “Tony and October set the parameters and let Lada and me run with ideas,” says Vertoch, who collaborated closely with the Gonzalezes’ project manager, Mike Milot, along the way. “The flow, the circulation—it’s a unique plan. I think Paul R. Williams would walk around and say, ‘This works!’ ” Contractor Williams (no relation to the renowned architect), who’s been building homes with Vertoch for decades, is quick to agree. “It has a traditional-transitional feeling but it’s not over-the-top,” he says. One of the biggest challenges came not from the city, as one might expect, but from the effort to move 15,000 yards of dirt. “It was a huge amount of earthwork,” he recalls, praising his firm’s project manager, Ryan Braun, for guiding the process from beginning to end. Notes Vertoch: “Design and construction should be fun but it isn’t always. This was.”

The kitchen island, in Benjamin Moore’s Soot, features Four Hands counter chairs, a Kohler sink with Dornbracht fittings and pendants from Visual Comfort & Co. The Wolf ovens and Sub-Zero refrigerator are all from Pirch. A custom ModernAire hood is above a Lacanche range. The stone countertops are from Ollin, and the backsplash marble is from Tile Elements.

“We wanted to create a jewel box of a space,” says Webster of the dining room. Noir chandeliers hang above custom chairs from C&L Designs and a Hickory Chair table. The wallcovering is Kelly Wearstler for Lee Jofa, from Kravet. Antique brass pulls adorn the built-ins painted in Benjamin Moore’s Onyx.

Webster has high praise for Vertoch. “Philip is the dreamiest architect ever,” she says, noting that homes of this size can often feel cold but he laid this out in a way that feels connected. “From the beginning, there was a clear direction: a Georgian façade that becomes a modern oasis in the back.” With the Gonzalezes’ busy schedules, furniture design concepts were discussed online. “Lada listened to us and really helped us discover our own style,” adds October, recalling shared Pinterest boards and schemes that evolved from glam-bohemian to California cool. Webster sourced furnishings from myriad companies but relied heavily on generously proportioned custom pieces. She designed sofas for the living areas and the children’s playroom, the banquette in the bar, and the wingback dining chairs whose shape is reflected in the room’s Art Deco-style wallpaper. A custom bed and lounge chairs, all upholstered in cream, create a cloudlike master suite. “I tried not to be so predictable,” says Webster. “It’s classic Hollywood but youthful.” To give character to the mostly white, high-ceilinged spaces, she opted for lots of black (in the kitchen, Tony’s office, the bar and the outdoor dining area), adding sparkle with metallics and softness with muted gray-greens. Carrying the look outside, Webster chose light-toned wood and black furnishings, the clean lines of which repeat in the garden. “The architecture really drove the design of the hardscaping and the planting,” says landscape architect Gary Mason. “It’s a little bit formal with a linear quality but it’s not fussy. Their principal concerns were privacy and space for the kids to play, but we also kept a simple palette of whites and greens to match the house,” he explains. “No space goes unused,” adds October. “Our favorite thing to do is host Sunday dinner. We open the doors, turn up the music, cook a big meal and watch the kids play. This was our dream, to build a home that seems like a vacation and where everyone feels welcome. I’d say we nailed it.”

Noting that “many guest rooms are an afterthought filled with leftover furniture, Webster devised a thoughtful, curated space with a CB2 bed dressed in linens from The Studio at DRC and flanked by nightstands from Orient Express Furniture. MAKING WAVES

IN SAN DIEGO, A YOUNG ARTIST CARVES A SINUOUS PATH THROUGH HIS CHOSEN MEDIUM. WRITTEN BY LAURIE PERRY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUIS GARCIA

238 / luxesource.com

Artist Dan Nguyen works out of a San Diego studio, far left, where he creates stunning wood pieces. The signature of his ever-evolving practice is a sinuous feel, left, even when the materials are not.

W

hether it’s used to foment political revolution or just to spark FOMO among friends, social media garners a lot of criticism. But Dan Nguyen, known as Nuge, credits it for a blossoming career he hadn’t intended to pursue. The young artist, who was a pre-med major in college before switching to architecture, started posting about his learning curve in the world of woodworking four years ago while toiling in an office. “I was desperate for a creative outlet,” Nguyen recalls. “I liked building models in school, so I decided to give woodworking a try.” Near his home in San Diego, he found a class that taught him proper use of the complex and sometimes dangerous tools. Soon, he posted his first project, a cutting board, on Instagram. “I loved the feeling of making something from beginning to end and it being all mine, from idea through creation,” he says, adding, “I basically spent two years making cutting boards, learning how wood acts.”

As Nguyen’s mastery of the medium grew, so did his ambitions, and he began producing art. His first piece in the sinuous style that now is his hallmark was dubbed Almond Milk. “I knew I wanted to make a carving, but I wasn’t sure of what. Should it be a human figure? A man or a woman? I didn’t know,” he remembers. “I did know I wanted it to be sensual. To me, it seemed nothing is more sensual than bed sheets and how they feel wrapped around you. I was trying to create a feeling like silk sheets, like fabric—softness out of hard surfaces.” That search for sensuousness informs all of Nguyen’s art pieces, which by 2016 came to dominate his work as he moved away from making utilitarian—but attractive—cutting boards, tables and countertops. And showcasing the evolution of his art on Instagram has helped him develop a steady stream of clients. “I usually have a queue of three commissions waiting for me,” he reports. Nevertheless, he still finds the time to explore new techniques and add to his portfolio.

240 / luxesource.com

Of late, Nguyen has been incorporating pearlescent and metallic dust on his creations, this page and opposite. A fan of social media, he takes an analog approach as he conceives new work, opposite left. Stacks of wood wait to become part of a new piece, opposite right.

“Those are pieces that are just for me,” says the artist, who emphasizes the importance of not being locked into a style or approach at this stage of his career. In the spirit of experimentation, Nguyen has tried incorporating pearlescent and metallic dust in the carvings’ clear topcoat, giving pieces like Sparkle Motion an iridescent sheen. “It doesn’t cover up the beauty of the grain in the ash woods,” he says. For projects down the road, he’s contemplating wrapping neon tubes around a wooden sphere. “I want to juxtapose contradictory elements and make them work together,” he says. “And I am always thinking about how I can make this hard substance sensual.” Wherever Nguyen’s explorations take him, one thing can be counted on: He will document each step on Instagram. However, he’s quick to point out that his fundamental creative method is thoroughly old school. “It is so easy these days for people to make designs behind a computer screen and then have a machine carve it all out,” he says. “Everything I do is thought out methodically and crafted until it feels right. I revisit my work day after day, experience it from all aspects and massage it into place. It’s through this process that each and every piece has its own soul and fingerprint.”

NEW DIMENSION A YOUNG FAMILY’S ENCINITAS HOUSE FEELS CONNECTED TO THE SCENERY JUST OUTSIDE THEIR DOOR. WRITTEN BY KATE ABNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMBER THRANE, DULCET CREATIVE

W

e hit it off immediately,” says designer Erika Gervin of meeting her client. Each woman had previously lived in both Atlanta and Dallas, and that shared Southern sensibility fostered familiarity from day one. “It’s always good to have a client who is trusting,” Gervin explains. “And one way to build trust is to become friends first. And we really did.” The client and her husband had recently scooped up a dilapidated 1976 house in Encinitas and turned to the designer to give it a much-needed makeover. The mission: merging the couple’s occasionally conflicting taste while honoring the laid-back lifestyle of the neighborhood. “We had a very clear vision of what their new home would be,” Gervin says. “White and bright with a modern coastal California vibe.” But the house had languished nearly untouched for decades, so she knew it would require a complete gut, from soup to nuts. “We took it almost down to the studs, basically just started over,” she says. For such an ambitious undertaking, Gervin called on general contractor David Smith of D C Smith Construction, who, as a native of Australia, innately understood the beachy aesthetic the designer was after. Their plans entailed replacing old skylights, maximizing square footage, minimizing trim, and improving the flow of traffic throughout. The living room’s original red-brick fireplace was left intact but modified with a more streamlined profile and a coat of white paint. Smith applied a consistent stain to the space’s floating shelves, the mantel and to the kitchen’s open storage as well. He also crafted built-ins with the help of his sister and father, who own a custom cabinetry workshop nearby. One of these follows the ascent of the staircase, which previously was precariously narrow. Now enclosed, to accommodate a new laundry room beneath, it has become a full-on architectural feature.

“IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE A CLIENT WHO IS TRUSTING. AND ONE WAY TO BUILD TRUST IS TO BECOME FRIENDS FIRST.” –ERIKA GERVIN

Smith’s kin likewise lent their talents to the cabinetry in the bathrooms and kitchen, milling sleek Shaker-style fronts. “I think that was very much a nod to the coastal style,” Gervin says of the choice. “It’s a little traditional but definitely a modern take.” And while the sky blue kitchen island provided a welcome infusion of color, the countertops became a point of difference for the homeowners. Though the wife is the one with Southern roots, it was her husband (hailing from Santa Cruz) who requested old-school elements throughout the abode. “He would have columns and a white picket fence out front if he could,” the designer says with a laugh. For the countertops, the husband wanted Carrara marble. “To me, that’s such a Southern choice,” she notes. But when the wife vetoed the material in favor of something easier to maintain, Gervin met them in the middle, cladding the walls with Calacatta Gold marble to add depth and warmth and laying easy-care quartz on the counters. The husband was also smitten with their existing, rough-hewn trestle table—a component that Gervin was challenged to offset with contemporary dining chairs. “We probably went through multiple iterations,” the designer recounts, before everyone settled on curved black velvet versions with dark beech legs. When the husband voiced his desire for buttery leather armchairs in the living room, Gervin chose not the expected club or Chesterfield style, but a streamlined midcentury silhouette. Says the designer: “He got his leather lounge chairs, and she got the midcentury modern look.” Opposite the caramel-colored pair, a spindly lamp is countered by a plump sofa. Softly slipcovered and topped with pillows in faded fabrics and classic motifs, the cozy sitting spot is reminiscent of the subtly striped linen bedding in the master bedroom— just one of the many ways Gervin captured this family’s warmth and individuality. The surf prints in the entryway offer another hint. “They spend a ton of time outside,” says the designer. “He’s a big surfer. They love to walk to the beach and the heart of town.” And when they’re not tooling around at the local farmers market and restaurants nearby, the couple has an easy, breezy home base for their kids to grow up in a veritable paradise. “They live in this tropical oasis: It’s this huge garden that surrounds their home. It’s a perfect place for children to run around,” says Gervin, who’s waiting in the wings, should the couple decide to tackle a landscape redesign. “When you get to build a relationship through the journey, it’s a win-win. The wife and I are dying for an excuse to go have a glass of wine.”

Prints of surfers from Designers Resource Collection hint at a home’s locale near the beach in Encinitas and the owners’ passions. “The community is a perfect place for them,” says Erika Gervin, their designer. During extensive renovations spearheaded by Gervin, the staircase in the entry was reimagined with the help of general contractor David Smith.

Opposite: Gervin sought to harmonize her clients’ divergent aesthetics. In the dining area, she incorporated a traditional trestle table but surrounded it with velvet-upholstered contemporary chairs from Crate & Barrel. The Four Hands carpet and Shades of Light fixture bring their own modern edge. Below: Breezy draperies in a Larsen linen filter sunlight in the living area. A midcentury-inspired floor lamp by West Elm presides over a linen slipcovered Four Hands sofa, a wool and bamboo rug by Loloi and an hourglass-shaped table from Teak Warehouse. “We had a very clean vision for it,” notes Gervin.

Sherwin-Williams’ Slate Tile on the kitchen island “creates contrast and makes the unit feel like a piece of furniture rather than a heavy permanent fixture,” says Gervin. Above are RH pendants. The Kohler sinks are fitted with Newport Brass faucets from Ferguson.

Gervin complemented the kitchen’s quartz countertops from Arizona Tile with polished Calacatta Gold marble from European Tile Art on the walls. Brass pulls by Schoolhouse accent the cabinetry by Classical Kitchens. A Palecek chair is tucked under the built-in desk. The flooring is from DuChateau.

A faceted lamp by Arteriors and Currey & Company chest of drawers serve as subtle geometric counterpoints to the softer elements in the master bedroom. There, an upholstered RH bed is dressed in Belgian linens by Avasa. The carpeting is from M. Austin Designer Floors.

By diluting Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray for the master bedroom walls, Gervin emphasized the sanctuary-like feeling of the space. A dresser by Redford House features a hand-forged, blackened iron base. It stands adjacent to the master bath, which also incorporates Shaker-style cabinetry.
