POP OF COLOR
Micah Tipler, founder of TIPLER Design, is a true believer in embracing color in the kitchen. With DacorMatch, the innovative color system introduced by leading luxury appliance brand, Dacor, you can personalize your appliances in any pantone imaginable. Show your true colors. All of them.

Micah Tipler PRINCIPAL, TIPLER DESIGN Houston, TX
H
ouston based interior designer and Dacor Design Council member, Micah Tipler, is a force in the design, architecture, procurement, showroom, development, and build industries. Her “outside of the box approach has earned her status as an industry leader, and she is applauded for the design risks she takes, including her creative use of color in kitchen projects.

“What excites my design team and our clients about DacorMatch is the capability to truly customize something.” DacorMatch allows designers and their clients to customize the kitchen like never before. “Everyone uses their kitchen in a slightly different way. Being able to tailor it to fit all of our clients’ needs has become critical to the design process,” Tipler says. The DacorMatch Color System makes it possible to paint Heritage wall ovens and ranges in any color on the spectrum. “We’ve done ranges in subdued colors, from pearl white to navy blue. But we’ve also designed fun ovens in teal, fuchsia and orange, making something really unique and special,” she shares. The process is simple. By providing Dacor with your selected color swatch, the team will match it exactly, delivering a custom appliance fit to your taste. Tipler shares from experience: “Once we’ve established a color palette for a particular project, we determine an accent color that speaks to the client. Then, we provide Dacor with a pantone number, and the team creates a sample to send us for approval. It’s been a match every time.” In addition, Dacor offers seven standard colors to choose from. “DacorMatch is truly limitless, which as a designer, is hugely exciting,” Tipler says. “Being able to specify a personalized appliance for our clients that we know they’ll enjoy with their families for years is game-changing.” From start to finish, DacorMatch appliances take six to seven weeks. Warming Drawer in DacorMatch upon special request only.

EDITOR’S LETTER
Designers are increasingly seeking out bespoke pieces for their clients, such as this bold wall treatment by MJ Atelier (right).
Welcome to our annual Luxury Report issue dedicated to luxury in all its forms and iterations. To prepare for this issue, our editors reached out to designer-friends to ask, “How do you define luxury?” It’s interesting to read their responses. Certainly, it’s not about extravagance or price. For many, it’s about comfort, calm and a sense of peace in an otherwise noisy and somewhat chaotic world. Luxury is most definitely about anything that is made with great care and an attention to detail. I think it’s also about originality, which seems to be rarer to find these days. Most anything that’s elusive or slightly out of reach can be perceived as luxurious. Of course, time is the ultimate luxury: The idea of waiting for something to be made, (while we’re all programmed for instant gratification these days) seems sumptuous. I can relate to Ken Fulk’s response—that luxury is about the little things, like the scent of fresh-clipped flowers or an unplanned Sunday spent on the sofa. Can’t count how many weekends I’ve fallen into a nap on my red English roll arm, with a paperback novel atop my lap and my two Shih Tzu’s curled up beside me. Heaven!

Fashion designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” With customization on the rise, many designers could apply the sentiment to homes outfitted with bespoke elements—including Achille Salvagni, principal of his eponymous international architectural and design practice. “In the last 10 years, my clientele has increasingly sought out homes that are oneof-a-kind,” he says. “In many ways, looking for a designer is like looking for a tailor that can make a dress that fits your body perfectly.” He cites a client who recently hired him to create a highly custom home in Mumbai, India. “She wanted a living room that was a portrait of her family,” he explains. “After interviewing

the family members, I created furniture that represents the qualities of each. A sofa embodies the personality of the father, the table is inspired by the daughter—together, all the furniture tells this family’s story.” Maria Apelo Cruz, who co-founded the decorative arts studio MJ Atelier with her husband Mike Jovanovic, also sees an increase in customers seeking one-off wallcoverings, furnishings and lighting. “We are riding the wave of designers who want to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Today’s clients are looking for conversation pieces that no one else has.” An example is the wallcovering they made for an inveterate video gamer that includes symbology from classics including Zelda, Pac-Man and Pokémon.
Cruz says that bringing a designer’s creations to life requires finding the right craftspeople, and that’s challenging. “Many aspects of quality craftsmanship take a lifetime to master—so by the time you’ve perfected your trade, it’s time to retire,” she says. “Traditionally, a lot of information was passed down through families, but these days, some of the offspring of contemporary craftspeople are pursuing other things.” To keep those skills alive, she and her husband have started

personal aspect that makes the effort and expenditure worth it. The company offers their products in bespoke sizes, colors and fabrics. “Every person has a different idea about what makes the perfect design elements. What could be better than picking your own fabrics in the color combination to make something just for you? Customization is the ultimate expression of luxury.”
Custom designs take the form of personalized wall treatments, such as the one shown on the previous page by MJ Atelier. a teaching guild—and to the couple’s delight, they are discovering an eager audience. “The stereotype of a millennial is a person staring at a computer screen,” Cruz says. “But we’ve found many young people who want to learn how to paint, draw and gild.” That’s not to say there’s no place for computer screens in today’s customization climate. In fact, technology is facilitating even higher levels of tailored details. “These days, we have old-world techniques and modern tools living together—you’ll find an anvil next to computer-driven cutting equipment,” says Paul Verbecky, the general manager at Hammerton Custom. “Computer modeling is enabling us to do things we couldn’t have imagined in the past—we recently created a model showing a 6,000-pound fixture that’s 25 feet at its widest point. It’s the easiest and fastest way to show how a piece like that would look in a space.” But custom design takes longer and is more expensive to produce—so why are more consumers seeking it out? George Matouk, Jr., CEO and president of the linen company that bears his family’s name, believes it’s the

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN TEAMS UP WITH PERENNIALS TO CREATE FABRICS AND RUGS THAT WORK INDOORS AND OUT. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON
Timothy Corrigan is a self-proclaimed “Perennials freak.” With the debut of his new seven-fabric, three-rug collection, Perennials by Timothy Corrigan, the celebrated designer has put his own stamp on the high-performance fabric company’s “rugged yet beautiful” ideology. Luxe got the scoop on this exciting collaboration and why indoor-outdoor textiles are the future of design. You are crazy about high-performance fabrics. I’ve been using performance textiles for years— back when they were still ugly striped canvases! I realized early on, if you don’t have to worry about how you’re living in a house then it makes such a difference. I know some people who won’t let anyone drink red wine in their home, and I hate everything about that! When it is a “look but don’t touch” zone, then you’re not comfortable, your family isn’t comfortable and your guests aren’t comfortable. And the appeal of Perennials? It’s a gamechanger. Not all performance fabrics are created equal, and Perennials is kind of fanatical with how its fabrics perform. Also, the rugs feel like the
finest wool or silk. The company’s beautiful, soft carpet is stain-proof, which is exactly what people want. Customers want beauty and practicality. What was the spark for your collection? I have offices in Paris and Los Angeles, so my aesthetic is very much European-inspired, but through a casual California filter. In this collection there’s a fabric that is almost like an Italian tapestry, which is called Go for Baroque. There are also chinoiserie options, one which is inspired by a Chinese wallpaper and another that is reminiscent of an 18th-century interpretation of a French chinoiserie. You skew traditional, while Perennials leans contemporary. This was a real leap for Perennials. Ann Sutherland, who started the company, isn’t naturally drawn to the warmer colors and classical styles that I use but she said, “That’s why we need you!” I told her, “This is not going to be in your comfort zone. Be ready for it.” What’s in the crystal ball for performance fabrics? It’s important to see these fabrics as

something to be used indoors and figuring out how more products can be performance based. We’ll also see an expansion into materials like wood finishes with marine varnish so people don’t have to worry about putting down a glass. The future of design is influenced by consumers who are not willing to make the trade-off between performance and beauty.

THE LATEST TABLETOP FINDS ADD A TOUCH OF ARTFUL LIVING TO THE EVERYDAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
This season’s spirited tabletop selections are making it easy to transform everyday place settings into luxurious works of art. Each piece offers a creative expression while also evoking a bold sense of time and place. Consider Buccellati’s Doge collection, which inspirits its Italian craftmanship and pays homage to the splendors of Venetian art with hand-hammered and chiseled silver enhanced with malachite, lapis and red jasper. Closer to home, Michelle Blade looked to her Pacific Northwestern roots for her ceramic Garden Series. Molly Hatch’s Always Collection brings a modern and playful twist to a traditional 18th-century European surface pattern, and Luke Edward Hall’s collaboration with Richard Ginori is based on his love of Greco-Roman mythology. And finally, James Peter Henry morphed his public art installation at TableArt into a limited-edition collection that celebrates “the complexity of a human journey in a possible fourth-dimensional state.”

EYE CANDY FOR OENOPHILES When Heather Hebert was in her 20s, she was enchanted by a chandelier hanging in the barrel room of Lambert Bridge winery in Healdsburg—and she’s been a winery design enthusiast ever since. Her first book, The New Architecture of Wine, profiles 25 distinctive California wineries, all designed and built in the last decade. The volume showcases various aesthetics, from Occidental Wines’ modern, airy masterpiece of glass, concrete and reclaimed redwood to Epoch Estate Wines’ village-like property, with a tasting room created from the ruins of the original York Mountain Winery. “Every winery has a story, and no two of those stories are alike,” Hebert says. “These wineries are an expression of not only the shared vision of the winemakers and their architects, but of California’s topography, agricultural history, historic architectural vernacular and forward-thinking passion for sustainability and design. I feel as if they are an homage to California.” gibbs-smith.com

OPEN HOUSE CLÉ TILE
Ten years ago, artist and designer Deborah Osborn launched Tile Envy, a blog showcasing extraordinary tiles she discovered in her travels. Her enthusiastic readers were soon asking how they could get their hands on them. In response, Osborn launched Clé, an online shop selling heirloom-quality tiles from artisans and designers around the world—from Moroccan zellige to raku-fired tiles from Vietnam. Now, Bay Area customers can see all of the offerings up close, as Clé has opened its first brick-and-mortar presence: a 12,000-square-foot headquarters in San Rafael. The complex features a soaring gallery designed as an homage to Cy Twombly’s Roman palazzo, with rotating vignettes. In the rear of the studio is a kitchen with a wall of Fornace Brioni Acanti tile. The location also includes an on-site guild where emerging artists can learn the craft of tile making. One of Clé’s newest offerings is its new octagon/bouchon collection, designed by Anthony D’Argenzio of Zio and Sons. Handmade in Morocco, the textured collection features a simple, timeless design of octagons and square dots—as well as zellige border tiles—that can be mixed and matched in 16 different color combinations. cletile.com 114 / luxesource.com
In the midst of the emerging Transbay neighborhood, Mira SF is turning heads. The new luxury condominium—with a bold, distinctive exterior that appears to be twisting toward the sky—was designed by award-winning architect Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang, listed among Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2019. Inside, spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom residences feature bay windows that offer sweeping views of the bay, the Bay Bridge and the city skyline. And thanks to the building’s innovative design, each residence has a different floor plan. “It gives everybody the opportunity to pick a unique home in a Jeanne Gang building,” says Carl Shannon, senior managing director at Tishman Speyer, developer of Mira SF. The interiors, also designed by Gang, boast open kitchens, a warm palette and luxurious materials like Volakas marble and Italian porcelain tile. As for amenities, residents can lounge on the rooftop deck, work out in the Jay Wright-designed fitness center, and recharge their electric vehicle at one of the on-site charging stations. mirasf.com WRITTEN BY KIMBERLY OLSON

Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, owners of the ultra-successful furniture company that bears their name, are in a car, speeding through rural North Carolina on a weekday morning. Moving forward quickly is an apt metaphor for their business, which is now celebrating its 30 th anniversary. Gold and Williams initially founded a factory in Taylorsville to ensure superior, American-made products, then proceeded to take care of their now 900-plus employees by establishing on-site day care, a gym, a health center and a café. Their progressive policies rocked the furniture industry, and their products—vintage-style leather club chairs and seating slipcovered in casual fabrics—did too. The duo spoke with Luxe about their time in the industry. mgbwhome.com How does 30 feel? MG: Weird and interesting and great. We just hired a CEO, Allison O’Connor, to spearhead things, nurture our team and position us for even bigger and better growth in the future. Greatest lesson learned while in business? BW: Follow your gut. If you don’t have that really deep feeling about something, it may not be quite perfect. So many people let others get in their minds or talk them out of stuff, then things go kind of haywire. Proudest accomplishment as a company? BW: Day care. We started it 22 years ago. Since then we’ve had about 70 kids there all the time. You get to see them grow up. What’s next? MG: A whole new take on leather club chairs in exciting colors, like leaf green, deep red and peacock blue (shown). Some of the silhouettes are classic modern while others have a very new traditional look. 116 / luxesource.com

At Bauhaus, photography was used to capture the vibrant creativity—and everyday lives—of its members. From October 10 to November 8, get a fascinating, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the legendary design school at the “bauhaus.photo” traveling exhibition as it makes a stop at the Museum of Craft and Design. The show, in partnership with AIA San Francisco and the Goethe Institut and developed by the Bauhaus-Archiv/Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin, will feature 100 key reprints from the world’s largest collection of Bauhaus photography including architectural photos, product images, inventive portraits and beautifully lit still-life photos. Using a medium that was still new at the time, the photographers experimented with extreme perspectives, tightly cropped close-ups and other stylistic techniques. Showcased in the collection are early designs by luminaries like Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Josef Albers, among others. The exhibit also includes photographs by Lucia Moholy (below, top), László Moholy-Nagy (bottom, right) and T. Lux Feininger, as well as talented yet lesser-known artists, such as Kattina Both, Irene Bayer-Hecht and Max Peiffer Watenphul, and even standout works by artists who are completely unknown. Visitors will also see portrait, architectural and product photographs depicting life at the Bauhaus, from student workshops to performances and celebrations. Accompanying the exhibit will be a 144-page catalog, in both English and German, packed with impressive illustrations. A panel discussion will take place October 11 at MCD. sfmcd.org

Artfully INCLINED
San Francisco has no shortage of artistic talent—from painters and photographers to glassmakers and metal sculptors. Over four consecutive weekends beginning October 12, get a chance to meet emerging and established artists, visit their studios and take a peek at their latest works. Here, we spotlight four of these talented creators. artspan.org
NIKKI VISMARA ▲
Nikki Vismara, whose work can be found in private collections around the world, is known mainly for her oversize abstract paintings. At this year’s Open Studios, she’ll also be showing some new, smaller works comprising mirror tiles on panel. “The first mirror paintings were based on photos I took in Cuba, and I find myself still adding to this series,” she says. One series of mirror paintings is based on Dr. Masaru Emoto’s research showing that water has life energy and can be transformed by thoughts, words and sounds. Meanwhile, Vismara is finishing her “Voicemail Paintings” series, abstract works based on voicemail messages she saved upon returning to the United States, with imagery that corresponds to a sound wave of the spoken audio.
▲ VEERAKEAT TONGPAIBOON
Thailand-born cityscape artist Veerakeat Tongpaiboon has been inspired by the architecture and energy of San Francisco since he first arrived in 1988 to pursue his dream of creating art. He’s proven adept at capturing a single moment in time, using his distinctive style to translate that moment |into highly atmospheric work. Experimenting with color and light, he employs thoughtful brushwork, thick impasto and thin washes to build a sense of movement in his paintings. “I try to capture the feeling of the city—moving, shaking,” Tongpaiboon says. “I pointedly exaggerate perspective. Hill, street, cars, buildings are tilted, placed on the diagonal, even curved.”
SEAN O’DONNELL ⊲
Lifelong tinkerer Sean O’Donnell’s fascination with the design and craftsmanship of everyday objects is at the heart of his work. Visitors to his studio will encounter fanciful assemblages that combine unexpected pairings of flea market treasures and vintage collectibles. Kitchen tools, musical instruments and vintage doorbells get a second life as art objects with a hint of wit. As a final flourish, the art is titled with “a spicy soupçon of malaprops and punishing puns.” Case in point: O’Donnell’s latest series, “Illuminati a Go-Go,” in which colored plastic lighters get an extra pump of vibrancy via rear lighting. The interactive pieces come with a tiny handheld remote control to create different backlighting experiences, from solid-on lights to various flicker settings. 118 / LUXESOURCE.COM
▲ RACHEL LEIBMAN
Mixed-media artist Rachel Leibman continually collects items that eventually make it into one of her masterfully constructed pieces. For her latest project, the “Chrono” series, she incorporated vintage watch parts into intricate tapestries, quilts and hanging sculptures. “Mechanical watch parts are exquisitely tooled to create a remarkably sophisticated machine,” she says. “When the light catches them, they sparkle like jewels. When sewn onto fabric, they remind me of calligraphy or hieroglyphics. They evoke a time when fine craftsmanship and care were paramount. I also love working with watch parts because they provide such a beautiful metaphor for so many aspects of life. Our stories are bound up in time. No matter what we do, time marches on, leaving us with memories and hopes.”

“With the Presrv™ Wine and Beverage Coolers, we integrated some of the most sought-after technological elements and combined them with eye-catching aesthetics.”
discoverzephyr
A seasoned entertainer’s kitchen is no longer complete without a Presrv™ Cooler. Created by wine preservation and ventilation pioneer Zephyr, the Presrv Wine and Beverage Coolers are posh and high-performance refrigeration units complete with Full-Extension Wood Racks, Active Cooling Technology, and two distinct temperature zones. Ideal for those who appreciate everything from red and white wines, craft beer and perfectly chilled sodas, the Beverage Cooler dips down to a frigid 34 °F—an ideal temperature for storing beer and other beverages that taste best at their frostiest. The Presrv Cooler works in nearly any space; its design is centered on providing solutions for the way people live and where they spend their time in the home. In an open kitchen, a Presrv Wine Cooler ensures that favorite bottles of wine are easily accessible when entertaining guests. And in game rooms, large walk-in closets or dens, a Beverage Cooler is an ideal option to store favorite drinks, so they are on hand and chilled to perfection.
Luke Siow, Zephyr President
THE RIGHT MIX Integrating mixed metallics throughout the home continues to dominate design trends. A sleek alternative to stainless steel, the titanium-coated black stainless steel Presrv Coolers give a sophisticated edge to wine storage. INTO the BLUE ONCE OVERLOOKED KITCHEN STORAGE SPACES ARE REINVENTED WITH RICH, JUICY COLOR. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

“I love using bold color in a room that feels unexpected,” explains Houston-based designer Lauren Haskett of this sophisticated butler’s pantry scheme that packs a punch with its sensuous blue shade. Traditionally, the kitchen has been a neutral zone where clients steered clear of adventurous tones. Yet today designers are turning to bright and dramatic designs in the kitchen’s auxiliary spaces: Think glamorous and vivid gem tones in a prep kitchen, butler’s pantry or wet bar. These more modest areas are being transformed into rich jewel boxes—a surprising departure from what was once a purely functional room. As Haskett notes, “Color really sets the tone of the room.” So why not add some drama to peeling potatoes and storing spaghetti sauce?

PANTRY PERFECT LAUREN HASKETT
While using a strong color took some persuading (Black was the original pick!), designer Lauren Haskett always knew her client’s butler’s pantry needed something fresh. The trick was elevating the design of this space with polished surfaces and elegant details that were in keeping with the rest of this stately home near Fort Worth, Texas. houstoninteriordesign.co Tell us about the function of this space. I call this the butler’s pantry, but it really has a multitude of uses including acting as a connector between the main kitchen, media room and mudroom, so it gets used all the time. As the kitchen space only has one wall of cabinetry, this room doubles as a coffee bar, wet bar, charging station, storage area for china and catering kitchen. Several appliances, including a Perlick refrigerator, Scotsman ice machine and KitchenAid dishwasher, are also housed in the pantry.
A Native Trails sink and Kallista faucet sit in front of a large window that looks out onto the patio and pool. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls.
206 / luxesource.com
Is the same level of sophistication carried throughout the house? The overall aesthetic of the home is definitely on the formal side and even the spaces that are casual still have an elegance to them, so I wanted to make sure the butler’s pantry reflected how refined this residence is. I also wanted to inject a dose of glamour with this grand color.
photos: max burkhalter, max b photo.
The color is so striking. How did you select it? I’m so happy we went with Hague Blue because there is so much depth to it; it can go green, blue and gray all at the same time. However, what’s most important when working with a darker color in a space is to incorporate contrast, so it won’t ever feel like a cave. Here, we added lighter countertops, pale wallpaper, metallic hardware and glass-front cabinets that bounce light around.

OUR ANNUAL DEEP DIVE INTO REAL ESTATE AND THE SHEER LUXURY OF HIGH-RISE LIVING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL
PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
MOVING ON UP Over the last few years, more and more people have been gravitating toward cities and the vibrant lifestyle that high-rise living delivers. Young executives, international professionals, families and retired couples are looking for ease, convenience and walkability—museums, restaurants and schools at their doorstep—but all within the frame of luxury living. To meet the demand, developers are turning to the world’s most respected architects and designers to create residential buildings that meet every need, and quite a few whims. A latenight cognac and a game of billiards? A sunrise swim in the infinity pool overlooking the city? It’s all possible. And while the amenities are designed to feel resort-like, they are also intended to feel like home.

RISE
The Harrison, on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, was ahead of the curve when it devoted its penthouse floor not to the preeminent condo but to its residents’ pleasure—a democratizing move that new developments are following. There, designer Ken Fulk, who designed all of the property’s public spaces, created Uncle Harry’s, a green-lacquered lounge that lets everyone take in the 49th floor’s spectacular vistas. “With 180-degree views spanning from the ocean to the bay, we imagined this as the sky-high aerie of a bon vivant explorer that just happens to be your favorite uncle,” says Fulk. Accessed by a grand entry salon, the floor includes a dining room, pantry, fitness center and spa. It’s an homage to the city’s elegant and continental spirit, just with Fulk’s signature pizazz. theharrisonsf.com

Lobby library at 277 Fifth Avenue “Our design reflects the energy and sensibility of NoMad,” says Jeffrey Beers of his vision for 277 Fifth Avenue. “It’s my favorite neighborhood in New York, so it was easy to be inspired by the area’s historical buildings and creative vibe.” Making a traditional statement in thoroughly modern style is the lobby library, one of the building’s most sophisticated amenities. 277fifth.com Why a library? In the building’s lobby entrance, we really wanted to make an instant “welcome home” statement. Describe the look. Handsome, sensible, tailored and timeless. Tell us about the features. If you look closely, you’ll see the library mimics the building’s exterior. It’s beautifully made with dramatic, double-height cases and incredible wood detailing. HIGH SOCIETY
FOUR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS CHAT ABOUT LUXURY AMENITIES AND THE FUTURE OF HIGH-RISE LIVING.
CURT R. BAILEY
LEONARD STEINBERG
KEVIN BATCHELOR
BRIAN LEVITT
What trends are you seeing in the high-rise sector? Developers will increasingly cater to families who appreciate the benefits of urban living—a graciously designed residence that extends to worldclass amenities for all generations. Must-have amenity: Fitness centers. I want state-of-the-art equipment, first-class service, innovative programming, and well-designed spaces that offer communal cardio workouts to private Pilates sessions. relatedmidwest.com
Why is the high-rise market so hot? Time is the last luxury, and high-rise living delivers convenience. Elevating yourself above the city allows you to enjoy all its joys while separating yourself when it’s time to relax and unwind. Amenities on the horizon: Wind turbines on top, generating energy for the entire building and a landing pad for drone deliveries. Security will become much greater, too. compass.com
Who’s moving in? In the past decade, we have seen a downsizing trend amongst empty nesters, gypsy nesters and older millennials. What’s luring them? This demographic wants walkability and a 24-hour, lock-and-leave lifestyle. Everyone wants their own personal concierge to handle everything from dry cleaning and food deliveries to tickets to the opera. They’re looking for higher-quality, personalized butler-style services. You can’t beat the hyper-convenience. hines.com
What amenity is most important to you? Where we live has a profound effect on our well-being and I’m all for beautifully designed common spaces that encourage gathering. How do you see the high-rise lifestyle advancing? People choose condo living because they want to know their neighbors. There needs to be a renewed focus on creating memorable experiences that build a stronger connection between people, place and community. navareal.com

15 Hudson Yards, a collaboration between architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, who oversaw the interiors, has devoted its 51st floor to entertaining amenities that will thrill epicureans and oenophiles alike. A MOMENT WITH COLOR The shades du jour. “Gemstone colors are big right now,” Jeff says. “We’re seeing a lot of deep greens paired with satin gold and brass finishes. Woodland shades and terra-cotta hues are also on trend for 2019. For faucets and hardware, matte black, pewter and gunmetal finishes are popular.” How to mix metals. According to Diane, most everyone who enters the showroom has this question in mind. The key? Consider hues and undertones, texture and sheen. “For example, if your primary finish has warm undertones, the accent finishes should also be warm. Or, you can match textures, like rose gold and chrome. This goes against the undertone rule, but works because both finishes are polished and vibrant.”

Upon being asked about the latest trends, her expertise shows, as she lists them in detail and shares the do’s and don’ts of implementing them. “White kitchens are still relevant, but we are getting more requests to incorporate other looks,” she says. “Rift-cut white oak and walnut are gaining popularity, usually in a simple grain pattern. Two-tone kitchens are often requested, but work best for large spaces, where a different color for the island or an armoire can break the monotony created by so much of one shade.” With more than 20 years of experience and two world-class cabinetry partners—William Ohs and Quality Custom Cabinetry— Kitchen Matrix succeeds in bringing these popular looks and much more to fruition.

t was a trip to Belgium that inspired the owners of this historic San Francisco home. The couple—a pair of married scientists with a 10-year-old son—traveled to Antwerp to visit the 1,000-year-old castle of Axel Vervoordt. The Belgian designer and antiquarian, whose client list runs the gamut from Bill Gates to Kanye West, talked to the couple about design principles and architectural significance. “Axel not only taught me about the concepts, he gave me the language to express them,” the husband says. “He impressed on us the importance of allowing a home’s history to speak as well as a duty to faithfully steward the past into the next generation.” With those lessons in mind, when the couple purchased a 1917 townhouse—one of four in a row designed by architect Willis Polk—it had nothing to do with its tony Nob Hill address and everything to do with the bones of the structure. Those bones were hidden thanks to an ill-conceived attempt to modernize the landmark building, which left many of its features covered with yellow stucco and slate tiles. The new homeowners sought a designer willing to embark upon a historic excavation aimed at resurrecting the home. Since the husband grew up in a house that designer Paul Wiseman, coincidentally a longtime friend of Vervoordt’s, had helped his mother design, the choice was obvious. Some early sleuthing on the part of Wiseman and designer Jessica Redondo included studying the neighborhood. “We peeked through the gates of two Polk houses higher up the street and saw exposed brick and concrete,” Wiseman says. The discovery led them to believe similar materials likely existed at their client’s home under the stucco. Their suspicions were confirmed when general contractor Clayton Timbrell removed a section of the material and revealed the original brick veneer. It was covered with chicken wire and concrete binder that Timbrell painstakingly removed

It then took a team of workers armed with small pliers to remove the slate tiles that blanketed the terra-cotta floor and concrete steps. “The flooring cleaned up easier than the walls,” Wiseman recalls. “We had to stain and faux finish the bricks because they were in such bad shape.” In lieu of polishing the exposed concrete, they accepted the stains and rough edges as part of the building’s re-emerging character, and— after painting the remaining walls white and darkening the window and doorframes—Polk’s classic Italianate courtyard regained its original splendor. “The changes outside established a European feel that translates easily in the rest of the house,” says Redondo pointing to the classical leaded-glass windows and the entry’s black and white tumbled marble floor tiles as the perfect instigators. “Of course, above all else, it was important to the family that this home feel cozy.” Such ideas skewed furniture selections in a traditional direction. In the living room, for example, a two-sided tufted chenille sofa and leather armchairs display visual heft that grounds the space. A baby grand piano adds weight to the opposite side where a beaded Nigerian chair is a decorative counterpoint, and what resembles an ancient oil painting suggests longevity. “It’s actually a blown-up photo of a painting fragment that looks like an oil,” says Wiseman, whose choice of dark floors and white walls intentionally neutralize the moldings and other architectural details. Residential designers Megan and Mauricio Munoz, part of Wiseman’s architectural team, replicated details as needed to sync with the building’s provenance. In the master bedroom, the plain walls cried out for detailing, so they designed paneling and installed it to match the rest of the house. “We asked ourselves ‘what’s appropriate for a Polk house?’ Then we designed a master bedroom that feels like it would have always been there,” Wiseman says. An intricately carved bed and a boudoir-style Schiaparelli sofa further elevate the sleeping quarters. Along with an impressive art collection that includes works by Ed Ruscha, Ansel Adams and Joan Miró, the husband brought an extensive selection of books to the project that he acquired over 30 years and wanted displayed. Noting that “dining rooms are superfluous until they are used,” Wiseman suggested a shared library/dining room. Lined with bookcases and topped with a coffered wood ceiling, the room possesses the moodiness of an old English study, which translates nicely for intimate candlelit suppers. Elsewhere, leaded glass cabinets and period milk glass fixtures provide additional markers of authenticity. “We took an old house that smacked of permanence and took it back to its original, historical essence,” says the husband about the end result. “When we pass it off, I just hope whoever gets it will protect it.”
For homeowners seeking a cozy feel in a traditional setting, designer Paul Wiseman designed a tufted, double-sided sofa crafted by Hilde-Brand Furniture with Rogers & Goffigon upholstery. Garden stools from Brostrom’s serve as side tables, and the two-arm floor lamp is by Phoenix Day.
Opposite: Wiseman and designer Jessica Redondo went for a classical look in the entry where they replaced a wood floor with black and white marble tile. “We antiqued the marble and tumbled it to give it a warm look,” Wiseman says. The milk glass pendants are vintage. Below: Bookcases and a new coffered ceiling were designed to contain the owners’ substantial book collection and give the dining room/library a moody ambience. Spanish designer Oscar Tusquets Blanca created the distinctive profile of the ebonized Gaulino chairs that surround the Therien & Co table.

Wood floors here and throughout the house were refinished by First, Last & Always. “We chose dark floors to neutralize all the detail,” Wiseman says. New paneled walls add character to the master bedroom, along with the bed and side tables by Custom Furniture Design. The table lamps by Remains Lighting have Shade & Wire shades. Hardesty Dwyer & Co. upholstered the headboard with Pindler fabric, and the Schiaparelli sofa wears fabric by Classic Cloth.
“The owner had this painting of a woman by Tim Kent, and Paul decided to hang it outside the master bedroom where it lures you in, says Redondo, who selected a period milk glass light fixture to match those found on the lower level. The original staircase treads, balusters and handrail are painted to match the overall black and white color scheme.

Opposite: The courtyard’s original brickwork and concrete steps were restored, and a glass roof encloses the space. “All the French doors open so the house becomes like one big room,” Wiseman says. “When they have a party, it’s magical.” Below: The view from the office was made possible by the addition of floor to ceiling leaded glass windows that also bring more natural light into the space. “The most difficult thing we did were those windows,” Wiseman says.

I
t looks like it’s always been here,” muses architect Andrew Skurman as he scrolls through photographs of the house he recently completed for a pair of executives. “We wanted a building that blends in with the neighborhood, not something that stands out, so we chose a contemporary Spanish Colonial style.” For inspiration Skurman looked to the work of early-California architect George Washington Smith, who worked predominantly in the Santa Barbara vernacular, and specifically to the architect’s 1925 Jackling House in nearby Woodside. It’s a building he knows well, having drawn up proposed renovation plans for it some 10 years ago. And although that home was ultimately demolished, Skurman’s interest in Washington’s design remained. With this project, he was able to tap into Washington’s original ideas and translate them into an entirely new vision that perfectly suits the owners of this home. “We designed the house around the site and chose to do a modest entry that’s low-key and welcoming. It’s so Californian, very inside-outside,” Skurman says, noting the home’s elongated bracket shape that creates a sheltered backyard, part of the larger grounds designed by landscape architect Thomas Klope. “The north and south ends of the home feel like pavilions,” he adds, explaining that one is the wife’s office and the other, which is open to the elements, is a stoa (or a covered colonnade) designed for public use. The linear portion of the home contains the primary living spaces on the ground floor and the family’s private spaces on the second floor. In keeping with tradition, the exterior is rendered with plaster and barrel roof tiles in varying shades of terra cotta to give the impression of age—but once inside, there’s a distinctly contemporary feel. Skurman is quick to point out some of the home’s clever details. The primary wing of the house is a modern version of an enfilade (a 17th-century French system of aligning internal doors in a sequence that creates a vista through the rooms when all doors are open) but instead of partitioning off the series of rooms with walls and doors, he divided the space with large, floating volumes with walkways on each side— one conceals a butler’s pantry, another houses a fireplace. “The bones of the home are classic, but the articulation is contemporary,” says the architect.

A corner of the living room features just one item from the homeowners’ collection of quartz pieces displayed on a custom bronze mount. A pair of Liaigre slipper chairs sit on either side of a table top sculpture by Jiun Ho and atop a rug from Tony Kitz Gallery. The console is by Jefferson Design Group and the barstools are by Walter K. Appliances include a Wolf range and a Franke sink with Dornbracht faucets.
Eschewing the expected wrought-iron staircase, the architect instead designed a nautilus-like spiral. “Why not walk up and down a sculpture every day?” he asks. It’s a rhetorical question he answers with a host of uncommon details that defy categorization. “This house is not overtly contemporary or classical,” he says. “It’s a hybrid.” Skurman’s artful approach was picked up immediately by designers Klaus Baer and Rush Jenkins, who joined the project shortly after it began. A chance meeting with the designers inspired the collaboration. “We jumped in full throttle,” says Baer. “Our biggest challenge was how to make a 15,000-square-foot home feel intimate for a growing family while considering the architect’s vision for the design,” adds Jenkins. The answer came, in part, with soft draperies to filter the sunlight and a neutral palette that complements the architectural finishes as well as the couple’s art collection, which includes Australian Aboriginal works and paintings by Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. “We wanted to create a beautiful relationship between the art and the furniture,” Jenkins continues, noting custom pieces like the entryway’s dandelion-inspired chandelier. “These features add a bit of whimsy, but they are also elegant.” Working with senior designer Sabrina Schreibeis, the team strove to echo Skurman’s simplified forms. “We created an incredible sofa with Caste Design and found a gorgeous Vladimir Kagan sofa in London. The custom dining table is set with bronze droplets for a surprise,” Jenkins adds. In the master bedroom, the designers created a sensory experience with a cashmere rug and cashmere-upholstered seating. “We all have an internal response to softness,” he says. “Ultimately, we wanted the interior to express the Japanese philosophy of half hidden-half seen,” says Baer. “The house unfolds like a novel. There’s a sense of discovery, and of beautiful, quiet moments.” But it’s also a family home. “The kids are able to enjoy every part of the home with their parents and their dog,” says Jenkins. “There’s warmth and harmony here.”

HEAVY METAL NAPA VALLEY SCULPTOR ADAM WIEDMANN GETS AN ADRENALINE RUSH FROM CREATING HIS MONUMENTAL ART. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY AIRYKA ROCKEFELLER

rtist Adam Wiedmann is a selfdescribed thrill seeker. From youth, he’s been racing mountain bikes, motorcycles and sailboats. These days, the sculptor gets the same kicks by wielding a hammer or operating the plasma cutter needed to make his monumental metal sculptures. “The creation process is fiery, loud and filled with brute force,” Weidmann explains. “In the end, you arrive at something balanced and elegant—but I crave the fire of creating.” His creative fire was fanned at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. “Art wasn’t my primary interest, but there they require students to study some form of it. A friend recommended Bruce West’s sculpture class, and I loved it,” says Wiedmann. “When Professor West was hiring studio assistants, I wanted the job so much I pretended I knew how to weld. The only thing I knew how to do was turn the machine on!” Following the aphorism advising “fake it ’til you make it,” Wiedmann quickly developed metalworking proficiency. A few years later, a studio visitor noticed his personal work and inquired about the cost. “I threw out a number that, at the time, equaled a month’s salary,” the artist says. When the price was accepted, a professional sculptor was born. After stops in Maryland, Maine and Southern California, Wiedmann landed in Napa Valley. He then set up shop in a Calistoga warehouse, and the creative fires burned again—only larger. “I never sold anything big in large cities, where people only have room for tabletop sculpture,” Wiedmann says. “My preferred size is very large—6 feet and over. Here in Northern California, there’s a taste for the monumental, and people have the space and resources for it.” The mammoth metal pieces are occasionally born on paper, sometimes only in Wiedmann’s mind. “Half of the time, I draw it out on paper— usually when I’m working on a commissioned piece,” he notes. “Other times I draw the patterns directly on the steel—and that’s when a Sharpie is my best friend.” Once the pattern is established, the “brute force” is employed. Wiedmann uses a plasma cutter to cut out the metal pieces. Next, the cold-forming process begins with the help of 272 / luxesource.com
studio assistants. “We don’t heat the metal when we shape it,” the artist says. “Instead, we place it on blocks and jump on it or use clamps and hydraulic rollers to make a curve. Once in a while, a forklift is used to bend the metal into place.” The pieces are secured together with a welding torch before, as Wiedmann calls it, the grunt work starts. “The grinding and finishing is just awful. It’s done by hand and it’s very loud and repetitive—but it’s the reason my forearms look good,” he jokes. Wiedmann has earned acclaim along with strong muscles—his abstract work can be found on the new Hewlett Packard campus in Palo Alto, in numerous public parks and in museum collections. Being an artist has also built his character. “This work isn’t easy, and it’s not for the faint of heart,” he says. “There are years when the income is amazing, others where it is sporadic. But, as I tell my kids, you have to keep enduring, keep wanting it, keep going forward.” In other words, it’s just another act of brute force.
Wiedmann prefers crafting sculptures that are 6 feet or taller. He uses heat and a wire brush to achieve the different patinas seen here.
GRAPHIC LANGUAGE A PRESIDIO HEIGHTS HOME GETS AN INSPIRED REFRESH WITH DRAMATIC WALLCOVERINGS AND A JAMES BOND-WORTHY BAR. WRITTEN BY KIMBERLY OLSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUGLAS FRIEDMAN, TRUNK ARCHIVE

A
fter a long search, Stephen and Saira Keane found a Presidio Heights home that was nearly perfect for their family. “It was a house we instantly envisioned our two girls growing up in,” Stephen says. “It checked so many boxes, including having the master bedroom and our daughters’ bedrooms on the same floor. There’s even a park right around the corner.” The couple wanted to add personality to the dwelling and tailor it to meet their family’s needs, so they hired designer Martin Kobus, whose work they’d discovered at the San Francisco Decorator Showcase. “We loved his creativity and sharp eye,” Stephen says. The Keanes, who describe their style as “warm modern,” requested their home be inviting and, because they admired Kobus’ creativity, they gave him plenty of leeway on how to achieve it. “We sent Martin images to give him an idea, but we also wanted him to have freedom so he and his team could suggest things that maybe we’d never think of,” Stephen says. Kobus relished the opportunity. “Since this is a young family with two little ones, we had to create the right environment for everyone—adult spaces for entertaining and children’s spaces for play,” he says. One challenge was the living room, which Kobus reimagined as an intimate library and cocktail spot. “We chose Élitis wallpaper from France that almost looks lacquered,” says the designer. “It’s a metallic, dark charcoal that played off of the bookcase, which was custom-made in Italy.” The design of the room’s cozy conversation area began with a trio of stylish glass tables that directed the room’s palette. “There are soft rose and bluish-green tables, so

we picked up those colors in the draperies, sofa and a wingback chair,” Kobus says. The space is now a family favorite. “This is where I sit on Sunday mornings with a cup of coffee and a crisp newspaper in hand,” Stephen says. From there, Kobus created a distinctive color palette for each room, casting a broad net to find just the right furnishings and accessories. With each decision, he considered how the family would live in the space. The kids like to eat at the kitchen island, for example, so Kobus chose comfortable seating covered in leather for easy cleanup and durability. Meanwhile, a Miele espresso machine was built into the pantry for the parents. One must-have on the couple’s list was an engaging play space for the kids. To create an inspiring atmosphere, Kobus wrapped the playroom in a custom European wallcovering with a whimsical forest theme. But when the forest seemed too sparse, Kobus worked to populate it. “They wanted a lot of animals in the pattern, so we had the wallpaper manufacturers add woodland creatures into the scene,” Kobus says. The room is rounded out with a foraged eucalyptus tree (it’s “planted” in a central location), a treehouse and a drawing station. “The girls spend a lot of time in the playroom, whether it be on the swing, in the playhouse or creating art while sitting at their little art table,” Stephen says. For the adults, Kobus transformed a room on the top floor into a swanky penthouse bar complete with a large island and cabinets. “We used wallpaper on the ceiling and walls that look like leather,” he says. “Then we created a seating area with an indoor-outdoor feel, with the exterior deck and interior seating flowing together.” The master bedroom was remade into a serene oasis with a soft palette and a comfortable, custom bed. As in the playroom, Kobus added a graphic mural—but this time a dramatic, large-scale botanical. “We had no idea that you could transform a room completely with wallpaper,” Stephen says. “We have it in all three bedrooms, and it gives each of the rooms tremendous boost.” With chic, functional spaces that delight the entire family, the home is now a perfect fit. “From the outside, it’s a pretty unassuming home, but when you walk in, you are blown away by the high ceilings and overall sleek design,” says Stephen, who mentions that the couple’s favorite space might be the top-floor bar and media room. “It’s where we spend time watching our favorite shows after the girls have gone to bed. Friends tell us it’s their favorite bar in San Francisco. We dubbed it ‘Skybar.’ ”
The front living room was transformed into a cozy library and cocktail parlor. A sofa by Anthropologie and an armchair from 1stdibs flank colored-glass cocktail tables by Sebastian Herkner, sourced through Arkitektura. The couple’s books and collectibles are displayed on blackened-steel shelving with leather-bound shelves by Julian Chichester.
The kitchen is open to the family room and outfitted with a sofa custom-designed by Martin Kobus with performance upholstery by Calvin Fabrics. The throw pillows are covered in Élitis and Great Plains fabrics. The coffee table is from Crate & Barrel, and Kobus designed the built-in shelving with sliding center doors.
