Inspiration For over two decades, Hudson Valley Lighting has been driven by Founder and Owner David Littman’s vision to produce timeless, heirloom-quality collections through a wide range of styles from the 19th and 20th centuries. ARTISAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

Hudson Valley Lighting is dedicated to artisan craftsmanship in creating masterful, high-quality designs with a focus on exceptional materials and careful attention to detail. The results speak for themselves—antique-quality lighting designs that look beautiful for generations to come.

UNIQUE AESTHETICS

When I see a piece of antique furniture, my imagination goes wild about its history and how the lines and details are still relevant today. Great design is something that spurs curiosity, imagination and emotion. — DAVID LITTMAN

Spanning in style from historic to artisan and transitional to contemporary, Hudson Valley Lighting uses high-grade materials such as solid cast brass, crystal, acrylic and blown glass. Superior manufacturing techniques, such as brass forging and hand-rubbed finishes, along with innovative technologies, allows one to appreciate the difference firsthand.

AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE

The quality and spectacular beauty of each Hudson Valley Lighting fixture can’t be found in more industrialized products. This unique experience, not typically seen in lighting design, provides its owners with a profound sense of pride and extreme appreciation for a lifetime of enjoyment.

Washington’s revolutionary style pays fitting homage to its namesake. Ornate and ethereal, the detailed curves of its artisan-crafted glassware are balanced by the pristine clarity of its inner framework.

Where Are You heAded? In the world of design, journeying—in some way, shape or form—is a constant. The turn around a showroom corner can lead to an inspiring discovery. An architectural structure rising from the landscape might spur a Moleskine full of ideas. From early September through late June, the pace in our industry is rapid-fire with fresh introductions in textiles, furniture, lighting, home accents and materials. To a large extent, this is what stimulates us, excites us, and nudges the design zeitgeist along. If ever there was a time to decelerate though, it is summer, when the pace slackens and so many escape to far-flung places (Will everyone be shopping in Europe this summer? Seems so). Taking a journey—whether it’s as modest as transitioning from your living room to the backyard for an afternoon, or more elaborate, as in two weeks overseas—further encourages the design dialogue. For those of us with a desire to remain curious, and sweep through life with a fine-tuned eye, the adventure never stops.

THE INSIDERS

WRITTEN AND PRoDuCED By brielle M. Ferreira

2 the artist

What’s happening: I’m really excited about Palm Beach’s recently completed renovation of the Flagler Memorial Fountain at Town Hall Square. It’s a hallmark of the city that had been abandoned for far too long.

What’s intriguing you now in the art world? There’s much to be studied regarding the rapidly changing role of the traditional gallery in the art world due to the rise of social media. The Internet has changed everything, and I think the industry, like many others, will continue to grow in an online direction.

jOrge sanChez

For the design-obsessed: Taking a walk down Worth Avenue is magical, as is paying a visit to the Everglades Club. I also have a lot of affection for the Lake Trail; it offers remarkable views. best place to get lost: My favorite public park in Palm Beach is Pan’s Garden, founded by the city’s Preservation Foundation. It’s in the middle of town and is very much of an oasis. It is a place that takes you away from the mundane and brings you into nature with its incredible collection of native Florida plant species. Most beautiful building in Palm beach: The architecture of the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea is remarkable. They recently undertook a restoration of the iconic 1925 building to ensure it stays stable and sound for many years to come. the perfect day is… Waking up to temperature in the 70s, with a breeze coming from the west, and walking the beach in the morning. Then, I like to shake the sand from my feet and take an early lunch at Pizza Al Fresco or the Bath and Tennis Club. Dream purchase: If I were going to splurge on a piece of furniture, I’d buy a console by Matthias Lock, a remarkable 18th-century cabinetmaker whose designs are still much coveted today. Jorge Sanchez is founder and principal of SMI Landscape Architecture in Palm Beach. He prefers drawing his magnificent garden plans the oldfashioned way: with pencil and paper.

092 / luxe interiors + design

shop ’til you drop: I love to venture down to Antique Row in West Palm and explore the vintage treasures that abound. I could also spend an entire day at Culpepper & Co. hunting maritime relics from days past.

susie bettenhausen

Susie Bettenhausen is a contemporary abstract painter based in Jupiter who takes her inspiration from the beach. In her own home, she’d love to have an original painting from Frederic Remington or Charles Marion Russell.

having a moment: I’ve been blown away by the work of Charleston-based painter Teil Duncan. She has a soft Impressionistic style that is soothing and invigorating all at the same time. Her use of color is an absolute delight.

images: Clockwise from top: Susie Bettenhausen’s colorful canvases capture the sunny, laidback vibe of a summer’s day, partly thanks to the artist’s love of painting al fresco. Lush green spaces and handsome courtyards are a vital part of Jorge Sanchez’s landscape architecture vocabulary.

On your radar: As a Jupiter resident, I’m really excited about the redevelopment of the Jupiter Inlet Village, and I’m looking forward to its completion. The idea of a new urbantype setting where artists play a key role is right up my alley. For the art-obsessed: Without a doubt, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach is a must. It has an impressive collection and so many wonderful events for the entire family. The Society of the Four Arts, too, is brimming with beauty. Also, if you’re looking to be amazed by some magnificent talent, be sure to visit Wally Findlay Galleries on the island. Can’t get enough of… The work of Scott Slusher. I have a profound appreciation for western art, and Scott’s photography captures the feel of that part of the world beautifully. There is a raw emotion in his prints, and I find myself returning to them over and over again.

Having a moment: Tom Scheerer and Alessandra Branca are two of my personal favorite designers right now. They’ve mastered that informal look that is both comfortable and highly sophisticated and that captures how people want to live right now. Spotlight on: I’d be remiss not to encourage people to try to wrangle an invitation to either the Mar-a-Lago or Everglades clubs— both are private social establishments designed in the early 20th century, and they boast the most incredible architecture Palm Beach has to offer.

For the food-obsessed: I make it a point never to miss Savor the Avenue in Delray Beach and Boca Raton’s Bacchanal and Tastemakers events. Summer escape: I love Patch Reef Park in Boca because it’s played host to many of my favorite memories of being with my twin sons, Adam and Anthony—like serving as their Little League coach and winning the City Championship game there. Up next: After a few years of pretty rigorous development, I have finally launched my new social network platform for healthy living at kurriosity.com, in addition to my first App titled “Sweat With Me.” It’s been a real passion project.

the restaurateur gary rack

Luxury means… Having the opportunity to begin playing golf again after three years off due to a demanding work schedule. Design pet peeve: While creating beauty and ambience is important in restaurants, a dining venue must be functional first and foremost. 094 / luxe interiors + design

can’t get enough: The farm-to-table movement has changed the way I live my life and my new restaurant concept, Farmhouse Kitchen, is proof positive of that. The menu there is representative of how I eat on a daily basis: clean, guilt-free foods. Restaurateur Gary Rack is the founder and mastermind behind many of Palm Beach’s favorite trendy eateries, such as Racks and Fat Rooster. In addition to successful restaurants, he collects bottles of his favorite Bordeaux, Burgundy and Italian wines, as well as high-end watches.

i’d love to switch jobs with… Martin Grubman. He runs P.E. Guerin, which is the most amazing ornamental hardware supplier and foundry in Greenwich Village in New York. It should be a national treasure. can’t get enough of… Wallpaper! It’s gone in and out of style over the years, but it is something that I always love to use in all of my projects. It adds such dimension. I’m also mad for Chelsea Editions textiles; they get everything just right. Shop ’til you drop: It would be a mistake to overlook the casual, timeless clothing at Island Company or the more upscale offerings at Tomas Maier. I’m also a devoted follower of Susan E. Riley, a talented designer responsible for all of the clothes at her tiny, eponymous Worth Avenue shop. Anne Fairfax is an architect and principal at the esteemed Fairfax & Sammons in Palm Beach. Her most recent design purchase was a handmade vintage fabric from Thailand, which she ordered through Etsy.

images: Clockwise from top: Anne Fairfax’s signature classic aesthetic is a study in sophisticated Palm Beach-meets-New York style. Scenes from Gary Rack’s hip new restaurants, Farmhouse Kitchen and Fat Rooster, respectively.

gary rack headshot and photos: courtesy gr restaurant management group. anne fairfax headshot and photos: fairfax & sammons architects .

I just cannot tolerate when the design begins to interfere with operations.

in your closet: I’m very fond of one particular vintage Ferragamo blue wool coat I found in a Palm Beach consignment shop many years ago. It has gone with me practically around the world by now, and I never tire of wearing it.

Brought together by a love of all things textile, Stacy Waggoner and Kate Reynolds teamed up to create a cutting-edge design studio offering fabrics, rugs and wallpaper motifs from top designers around the world. Now, almost a decade later, Studio Four NYC boasts some of the hottest names in textile design alongside emerging talents, with much of the duo’s success lying in their creative acuity for partnering with artists, innovators and risk-takers. This summer, Studio Four releases three not-to-be-missed lines that fit just that mold. Designer-painter Rebecca Atwood first burst onto the scene—paintbrush in hand—captivating her Instagram audience one bespoke pillow and dreamy watercolor print at a time. Her artistry soon led to a partnership between Atwood and Studio Four, one that has since developed into a blooming design venture as the Cape Cod native sets to release her debut collection of hand-painted and marbleized fabrics with the studio. “Her textiles are so chic and livable,” says Reynolds. “Be on the lookout for her wallpaper collection to launch soon.” Just when you thought leather had nothing new to offer, Brit Kleinman, of Brooklyn’s Avo, enters the field, proving the possibilities have only just begun: Her jaw-dropping block-printed cowhides, branded with bold, artistic patterns and daring geometrics, incorporate a touch of modernity into the timeworn material. “We love leather and the luxury of something that keeps getting better with age,” says Waggoner of the partnership. “Brit is changing the way that people use and experience this textile.” Studio Four’s next debut proves that the art of plaster isn’t lost but rather in a state of renaissance thanks to Celeste Coughlin of Asterisk Designs. This doyenne of Venetian

plaster developed a specialized technique for transcribing waxed plaster onto paper, coining a perfect science to translate this ancient (and tedious) process onto a custom roll of wallpaper. “We have always loved the gorgeous, creamy texture of Venetian plaster walls,” says Waggoner, “and when we met Celeste we knew we were destined for something great to unfold.” With all these exciting collections debuting this season, Studio Four’s Chelsea showroom is the perfect spot to garner inspiration for any and all design endeavors. “Design is a luxury,” says Reynolds. “It should always inspire and never intimidate.”

A HISTORICAL HAVEN IN A SEAPORT CITY, AN ACCLAIMED ATHLETIC CLUB AND A 1930S BEACHSIDE REFUGE ARE ALL GIVEN NEW LIFE BY SOME OF THE BEST NAMES IN DESIGN. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MIMI FAUCETT

An infamous, members-only social club that once entertained the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor is being boldly reimagined by acclaimed architect Richard Meier. Located in the South Florida town of Surfside, the Surf Club will be a visual dialogue between the old and the new, transforming the original 1930s club into a Four Seasons boutique hotel and residences. Meier’s material palette will be simple: Floor-to-ceiling glass will maximize horizontal views of the Atlantic Ocean, while local surfaces, namely flooring of porous coral stone, will detail the exterior. Inside, handpicked furnishings will be set amidst the clean backdrop of the architect’s signature color—white. thesurfclub.com

CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHICAGO Founded in 1890 by families of American sports royalty (think Wrigley and Spalding), the Chicago Athletic Association has been a fixture in the Windy City for more than a century. The famed location, originally designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb, has now been revamped into a luxury lifestyle hotel by design duo Roman and Williams. “We were devoted to preserving the character and details of this historic building while creating a new language,” say the designers. The aesthetic maintains the building’s original fireplaces with bas-relief wood carvings, expansive marble staircases and stained glass, yet speaks to classic Americana with vintage artifacts like wooden gym ladders, Victorian-inspired lighting and leather furnishings. chicagoathletichotel.com

THE PALLADIAN HOTEL SEATTLE The Palladian Hotel, established in Seattle in 1910, was named for the Palladian windows that defined the architecture of the time. Today, San Francisco-based designer Nicole Hollis has taken this historically significant building and given it a speakeasy vibe with a sense of humor (pillows printed with Tom Selleck’s portrait, for example). Reclaimed-wood headboards juxtapose crisp, white Frette linens in the guest rooms, while brass accents, velvet upholstery and a tufted-leather check-in characterize the lobby, with the hotel’s original doors standing at the entrance of the gym. Ornamented by custom Ladies & Gentlemen light fixtures, Hollis’ warm yet playful interiors program boasts a quintessential Seattle feel and reflects the pulsating street culture found just outside. palladianhotel.com

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS

“I want my pieces to feel like something you would hand down to the next generation,” explains designer Windsor Smith in reference to her new 40-piece collection for Arteriors. Brimming with furnishings, lighting and home accents in a range of tonal golds, mixed metals and varied marbles, the line flirts between masculine and feminine dichotomies. Case in point: Smith’s Athena sconce (shown here in silver) was inspired by the delicate drop of an earring, while the Atlas sconce (shown in gold)

reveals the same caged form but in a more industrial, geometric outline. “It is through shape and silhouette,” says Smith, “that instant sculpture is evoked.” Laced with neoclassical and GrecoRoman influences, the collection leaves a rich patina in its wake, beckoning centuries past while maintaining modern relevance. “My goal was to reinterpret traditional in a beautiful, lasting way with utilitarian pieces that are meant to be used and not thought of as too precious,” Smith explains. Mission accomplished.

Photographer Gray Malin journeys to far and away places, capturing eccentric moments that spark fantasy and wonder, like llamas adorned in balloons amidst Bolivia’s salt flats, or rainbow-hued sheep in Australia. In his new fine art series, Gray Malin at the Parker, he keeps his zest for adventure close to home, shooting at the Parker Palm Springs as exotic animals playfully explore the iconic resort that unites luxury with amusement. Malin put down his camera to discuss the enchanting series, where monkeys are bellhops and giraffes are the guests, temporarily on view at the hotel. With an infectious joie de vivre, he proves the old adage: not all who wander are lost.

How did animals become your muse? I have a deep love for flamingos and penguins and couldn’t stop envisioning them on the property. Working with them and the capuchin monkey, zebra and baby giraffe was so much fun—I wish I could live in this fantasy every day. Any divas on set? We had trainers to direct the crew and myself on how to interact with them to keep them as happy models. Zack the zebra wasn’t much of a fan of the balloons, as they kept popping, but he was a professional and we got the shot. Images of animals in dreamlike settings are one part of your repertoire, but you’re also known for aerial shots of beach scenes. How do you capture the perfect composition? When I’m in the air, people and objects begin to stand out and

form patterns below. Once I’m up there, everything magically comes together visually for me and I’m able to capture the natural art that is being created below in the distance. What’s the most daring stunt you’ve done to get the perfect shot? Standing on a 10-foot inflatable boat in the waters of Antarctica, shooting beach balls up against icebergs the size of a skyscraper that could break apart at any moment. It was the thrill of a lifetime. You’ve said your favorite part of your job is getting to see the world. Can you offer a piece of travel advice to those filled with the same wanderlust? If you’re ever in Bhutan, you must visit the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of the country’s most sacred religious sites. Built in the 8th century on the side of a cliff, it is something of another world.

dream sequence

Your new fine art series focuses on exotic animals in unexpected places. What inspired the collection? Since living in Los Angeles, I’ve always enjoyed the quick escape to the desert, and the Parker Palm Springs has been my longtime favorite hotel there. This was a chance to let my imagination run wild, and apparently it ran right into a menagerie of wild animals enjoying the hotel with me.

“It’s fantastic to drift and just let a place wash over you,” designer Tracey Boyd says of her approach to travel. Until recently, her chances to do just that were rare. As the creative director of the coveted fashion label Boyd, she was constantly in motion, creating edgy yet feminine clothing. Her singular vision—one collection featured fleece ball gowns—won her a New Generation Designer of the Year honor at the 2000 Rover British Fashion Awards, along with a devoted international following, but little time for anything else. “When I moved into a more organic way of designing, I decided to go on trips for two or three months,” she says. “I wanted to go deeper.” This change of focus yielded Aboydbazaar, a collection of clothing and accessories influenced by her biggest passions: life, travel, art and fashion.

Since then, Boyd has been busy soaking up the world’s sights and sounds, be it the modern shapes of Singapore’s skyline or the traditional beading practices in Penang. India remains a favorite destination and a constant source of inspiration. “It’s such a place of contrast,” says Boyd. “When I’m there, I have too many ideas. I have to file them away and then come home to make sense of them.” With the luxury of time, the designer can now absorb the lessons from her travels and incorporate them into her work, such as in her latest venture, Boyd, a line of furniture inspired by her journeys and currently available through Anthropologie. “I’m obsessed with finding out how things are done but looking at them in a contemporary way,” she says. “Then, I put my own spin on them.”

Next on Boyd’s itinerary? She’s heading to the U.S., where she’ll launch Boyd with Resource Decor at High Point Market in October. Imbued with color and texture, the line mixes modern and traditional shapes in materials ranging from lacquer and metal to concrete and shells. Before that, however, she’ll pack a bag with a sketch pad, a few of her Aboydbazaar shirts, a collection of black and white beads and a beloved Dries Van Noten scarf and head to Puglia, in Southern Italy, to a convent that was reinvented as a hotel. “It’s filled with tribal art, textiles and miles of books on art, sculpture and furniture. It’s like having a holiday in the most fabulous library with incredible food and beautiful gardens,” says Boyd. “It’s a mixture of work and play and sums up my ideal way to travel.”

WHO: Reed McIlvaine—the owner and creative wunderkind behind Renny & Reed Floral and Event Design. A Park Avenue staple, the shop recently opened in Palm Beach, bringing citrusy sunshine to shots of their compulsively shareable event snaps. WHAT: It’s all in the details for shutterbug McIlvaine, so expect to see plenty of swoonworthy tablescapes and intimate close-ups of rare buds, in addition to impressive architectural details from the firm’s amazing venues. WHY: Following McIlvaine’s daily feed gives you the inside design scoop on the Palm Beach event scene, right down to which flowers make the must-have list at some of the most exclusive parties in town. IN HIS WORDS: “It’s not just the grand moments that impress me. Sometimes, I’ll pass a single fringed tulip or giant coral peony in our shop and be completely blown away.” 118 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN

A downtown West Palm Beach mainstay, the Norton Museum of Art is gearing up for a major overhaul, which will nearly double their gallery and exhibition space thanks to the addition of new pavilions. At the heart of the remodel is a redirected grand entrance with a stainless-steel canopy flanked by reflection ponds. A new, airy Great Hall will also boast undisturbed views of the Intracoastal Waterway, thanks to 44-foot-high ceilings and glass courtyard doors. Though the new plan seems dramatic, head architect Spencer de Grey of Foster + Partners says the changes “restore the elegant symmetry” of the museum’s original east-west axis, as first designed by legendary architect Marion Sims Wyeth in 1941. norton.org

“The museum was founded by artists and includes an art school and guild, so the artist is always my first priority. I enjoy working closely with them on special projects, like our major fall exhibition, “History Becomes Memory.” We’re working on installations by Terry Berkowitz about the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, as well as with Shimon Attie about hiding places in Amsterdam during the Holocaust, and a project about the role of women in WWII by the Berlin-based duo Renata Stih and Frieder Schnock. We’ll have works by the late Samuel Rothbort, as well. I’m also always on the lookout for emerging artists and older artists who have been undervalued. –kathleen Goncharov, bocamuseum.orG

Describe your aesthetic. My childhood involved traveling from the Philippines to the French West Indies, so I love making jewelry and clothing that feel timeless but that also have a strong Bohemian twist. My designs are made to breathe and travel well and feel good against your skin. what do you hope your pieces provoke? People who wear my clothing and accessories should experience a feeling of luxury, uniqueness and happiness. Many of my designs, especially the gowns, are handmade and only available in limited or oneof-a-kind prints, so customers know that they can come to us when they’re looking for that special piece.

One look at Michelle Farmer’s silky dresses and delicate gold chains is enough to encourage wanderlust in nearly anyone—with an emphasis on tropical escapades. Her Palm Beach store balances an inventory of things both bespoke and ready-to-wear and is a retreat in and of itself, thanks to its fully stocked rosé bar and HelenBilt Urchin chandeliers overhead. share your process. I always have a dream board on my desk that displays my inspiration fabric swatches and has images and visuals of who my customer is, where she likes to go and what she likes to do, and what she’ll be wearing when she gets there. I then sketch or drape my designs and have samples made. what is it like to be a fashion designer in palm beach? Palm Beach has this great small-townin-a-big-city vibe. We get both locals and well-traveled winter residents at the store, so I love popping down and meeting them. As a designer, it’s rewarding to get that type of input and instant gratification.

SANDRA JORDAN: SONOMA COUNTY

HIVE HOME

When did you open? We welcomed guests to the home emporium branch of our business on 424 Palm Street in West Palm Beach in January of 2014. What brands do you carry? We love anything that feels both coastal and contemporary, like tableware from Juliska, refreshing scents from Penhaligon’s or beautiful home accents from Aerin Lauder. Don’t miss... Be sure to make a stop at our garden shop—we’re always stocked with seasonal potted plant arrangements— and our stationery department, which carries coveted brands like Crane, William Arthur and Pickett’s Press. What makes Hive unique? I handpick everything in the store myself, which gives it a carefully curated, signature style. Plus, everything on our floor is available for immediate delivery. hivepalmbeach.com

9 a.m. Start the day at Shed for breakfast—its architecture by Jensen Architects is beautiful, and it carries wonderful items for the house and garden. It also serves a custom blend made by my favorite local coffee house, Flying Goat Coffee.

10 a.m. After breakfast, check out the Harry and Maggie Wetzel Native Plant Garden. It’s a tiny hideaway reclaimed from an old parking lot with more than 80 species of native plants each grouped by habitat. 10:30 a.m. Hit the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market. Most of the produce is grown within 10 miles of the market, so it’s a great place to get the freshest Dry Creek peaches. I also always get my veggie starters here. 11:30 a.m. Take an art walk along Grove Street on the Foss Creek Pathway on your way to the main square in Healdsburg. It’s sponsored by the Voigt Family Sculpture Foundation, and it’s beyond lovely.

12 p.m. Next, visit the Plaza. It’s our main square, and it has some wonderful art and design destinations, including my favorite: Saint Dizier Home. The store features local, handmade metal furniture—from tables of all shapes and sizes to beds, stools and shelving. Artist Aletha Soulé also displays her amazing wine country-inspired ceramics here. 1 p.m. Stop for lunch at Barndiva. It’s one of my favorite spots in Healdsburg and highlights the best ingredients from Sonoma and Mendocino counties. The chef, Ryan Fancher, has worked with Thomas Keller at The French Laundry in Yountville and Per Se in New York. All of the food is superb; plus, my fabric—Prima Alpaca—is used on an upholstered wall here, which provides a showcase for their rotating selection of artwork. 2 p.m. A visit to wine country would not be complete without a wine tasting. I love Copain Wines, which has a gorgeous view and interesting nontraditional wine varieties, and J Vineyards & Winery does great wine and food pairings. 4 p.m. Head to the Farmhouse Inn for a spa treatment. The spa is located in the inn’s former carriage house and incorporates ingredients from the surrounding land, such as Spring Forest honey, heirloom cider apples and fresh herbs, into their services. 7 p.m. Leave your dinner plans in the hands of Michelin-starred chef Steve Litke. His menu is inspired by the diversity of California cuisine, featuring Mexican and Italian influences.

While textile maven Sandra Jordan’s exclusive lines of woven alpaca fabrics have made her a citizen of the world, she still counts California’s wine country as her home sweet home. In fact, the region’s rich harvest colors are often the first point of inspiration for her Prima Alpaca collections, which are represented in showrooms across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and Europe. With summer in full swing and new textile releases on the horizon, Jordan is kicking back and toasting her hometown with her fun-filled itinerary for a day in Healdsburg. new perspectives

Excitement is permeating the kitchen and bath industry—just talk to an expert, and you’ll feel it too. Materials, both new and centuries old, are transcending the ordinary, even the “high-end” rubric; instead, they are interesting, they evoke warmth—they tell a story. The key words are no longer form and function but rather, beauty and technology. Together, these two formerly opposite elements create intimate spaces that are vividly original. Eggersmann

Baldwin Hardware

2

If there is anything to take away from an exploration into Baldwin Hardware’s products, it is the following: Quality reigns supreme—always has and always will; continuity of design accents (i.e., hardware) is important; and hardware should be a direct reflection of the homeowner’s aesthetic and lifestyle. A legendary name in cabinet and door hardware, accessories and locks, Baldwin is a staple in the industry, with a strong track record in creating enduring products. “From our American roots to other parts of the world, we like to look at what is classic and on trend and make sure our hardware reflects the desires and aesthetics of the homeowner and design community,” says Baldwin brand manager PJ Rosch.

from the professIonals Is It Important to have cohesIon of hardware throughout a home? 1

Yes, you want your hardware to be a reflection of your style and that means your style throughout the home must include the same high quality and finishes.

what Is InspIrIng BaldwIn now?

On Trend Synergy: While contemporary is a predominant design style, fusing looks is gaining popularity, such as modern interior designs in retro styles; black and white in geometric patterns; and organic materials in a space with pops of color. Variant hues: All shades of red are in, as are many shades of green. A resurgence of yellow brass is also noteworthy. A new kind of door: Pocket doors are huge on the list, from small spaces in New York to more industrial or rustic spaces. The best of brass: Traditional polished brass works well for the classicists, whereas a more transitional setting might call for a satin brass. A note on brass: Like everything in fashion, the popularity of brass ebbs and flows; however, it is less a trend and more a classic mainstay.

Historic and modern architecture. There is so much out there to love.

what are some tIps for the prospectIve hardware consumer? Think about the hardware early. Many people leave it until the end, but it is an integral part of the design and it should not be an afterthought.

What kitchen and bath trends should We anticipate for 2015? In terms of colors, gray will continue its reign in popularity, but other classic neutrals will join the palette for the year. Clean and contemporary lines will also dominate the kitchen and bath space.

The use of stone and tile in the home dates to antiquity and has survived millennia for a good reason: unwavering functionality. The use and look of these materials has gradually evolved, but did not undergo a noteworthy transformation until the 21st century. Companies like Cosentino, the global parent company of leading market brands for kitchen and bathroom quartz surfaces, have been prime movers in new applications and aesthetics of stone. “Cosentino’s research and development program has long been valued in architecture and design communities because of what its innovative manufacturing processes make possible,” says Lorenzo Marquez, Cosentino’s vice president of marketing. “Through a proprietary technique called Particle Sintering Technology, Cosentino has created an accelerated version of the process rocks and stones undergo over thousands of years in nature. The result: a stable material suited for an array of installations in the kitchen and bath, as well as outdoor kitchens and living spaces.” Versatility, a distinguishing characteristic of Cosentino-derived products, gives way to design cohesion and is the trait that will come to define this era’s stone and tile.

hoW have things changed in your industry in the past five years? Most notable is the demand for largeformat kitchen islands that serve as the home’s central hub, rather than the traditional kitchen table. In the bathroom, stand-alone showers have gained traction in place of the conventional shower and tub enclosures.

advice for someone beginning a project involving stone or tile: When it comes to material selection, durability and ease of care are just as important as how it complements the aesthetic of the space. This is often an installation job best left to professionals.

The kitchen, once an exclusively utilitarian space, has evolved into an aesthetic, central core of the home. Beyond open floor plans and heightened designs, kitchens are now becoming technologically rich, connecting end users to the infinite possibilities of the web. dacor, a leading designer and manufacturer of kitchen appliances, has been a driving force in the progression of the smart kitchen. The family-owned, california-based company is behind such kitchen innovations as the discovery iQ dual-Fuel Range, offering users cooking tutorials, recipes and text message notifications when food is ready; the discovery iQ Wall oven, featuring a built-in Android™ tablet and Bluetooth® technology and voice command; and the discovery Winestation, a four-bottle dispenser that preserves wine up to 60 days. dacor’s cEo charles Huebner notes the importance of connectivity in the kitchen but advises against technology for “technology’s sake.” “consumers will soon be bombarded with all things connected and should be aware of what they are buying for their home and why,” he asserts. “With dacor’s appliances, technology simplifies the cooking process and makes the culinary experience accessible to everyone, empowering the individual.”

Even though we are known the world over for our advanced cooking technologies, we still see ourselves as a small shop that builds beautiful, handcrafted appliances.

We are still seeing the same basic kitchen suite as in the past: range, hood, microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator. As technology moves forward and people gain a greater appreciation for food preparation, they are becoming aware of proper food storage to extend the life of their purchases as well as conscientious waste disposal.

The exclusion of all things extraneous best describes today’s kitchen. A kitchen without boundaries or barriers, a kitchen free from conventional thought and restrictions, a kitchen created to reflect the individual.

This doesn’t mean that the kitchen must match the style of furniture, interior trim and construction. often, our kitchens are shown as a juxtaposition or unexpected center of the home.” 1

Equal parts form and function, eggersmann’s cabinetry delivers beautiful and useful organizational solutions to the modern home dweller. The company, drawing from more than 100 years of innovation, trial and achievement, is a driving force behind the concealed kitchen—a design movement that gives way to gallery-like spaces in the kitchen, and the cabinetry is art. Using earthborn, organic materials such as raw wood and concrete, Eggersmann’s ultra sleek and clean-lined cabinetry reimagines modernity in a warm and inviting fashion. “We start with the most intrinsically raw materials available, including woods, metals and glass,” shares Eggersmann UsA cEo Michael soltoff. “With these materials used in various textures, colors and sheens, we constantly push the limits of the basic core components.” The Eggersmann design foundation is built on key Bauhaus architectural characteristics—flat, smooth surfaces, cubic shapes, neutral colors and open floor plans (fundamentally pure and resounding in utility)—and is distinguished by technological feats in cabinetry composition and ergonomics, such as its electric mechanisms, custom storage, handle integration and exotic veneers. “The wide availability of parts, components, hardware and materials across the world has caused a demand and push for incredible leaps and bounds in innovation of product,” soltoff says. “As electronic technology becomes more compact and lightweight, we see an increase in automation in our products, and it has become more of an integrated component of lifestyle, rather than just a cabinet or case good.”

Ergonomics play a large role in the design of a high-end kitchen, and it is highly suggested that most cabinetry pull out or come toward you instead of looking out of reach.

The trend of people spending more money on bathroom and kitchen remodeling— top requirements of new home buyers—continues to increase because these two rooms have become more important for boosting resale values.

Like jewelry, hardware is a powerful accent that can elevate, contemporize or even transform aesthetic quality. Equally remarkable is the utility of kitchen and bathroom fixtures and decorative hardware—an element of residential design that was once left to the discretion of professionals. Today, plumbing fixtures, accessories and hardware selection are as much a priority of the homeowner as cabinetry, a by-product of the increase in kitchen and bathroom remodels and the ubiquity of design ideas and information. In general, people are spending more on fixtures and hardware and placing greater value on the quality, craftsmanship and technological capabilities of these new products. california hardware manufacturer newport Brass, a premium brand of solid brass faucets and fixtures, is a noteworthy name in the industry and has adorned many of today’s residences with its contemporary, elegant and cutting-edge products. “We are dedicated to being at the forefront of the industry by incorporating technology, innovation and craftsmanship—all with a focus on creating products that bring value to our clients’ lifestyles, wellness and comforts,” shares david Emmons, director of marketing for Newport Brass. “We were one of the first manufacturers to implement Pvd (physical vapor deposition) finishing technology, a highly specialized process mastered by few manufacturers in the industry. Newport Brass now offers 29 finish options and multiple styles that can fit in any luxury bathroom or kitchen décor.”

consider two main factors when making a decision: 1. Is the style of the faucets or fixtures going to complement the room and offer a complete line of matching components? 2. Are the fixtures and components going to provide the functionality and performance the client is requiring, offering a personalized bathroom or kitchen design?

Quality and durability should never be overlooked, and layout and product selection with proper placement should serve a purpose. A well-designed space feels natural, looks in place and offers uncompromising enjoyment.

poggenpohl’s experts weIgh In

Poggenpohl began life in 1892 in a small german showroom. From the beginning, the ambition was to improve the kitchen. good fortune came to founder Friedemir Poggenpohl in finding craftspeople and designers to execute and expound upon his sleek, utilitarian aesthetic. Today, Poggenpohl is an industry innovator, from sustainable building methodology to fresh concepts in materials and finishes to ergonomic cabinetry. What Poggenpohl created more than a century ago is the kitchen of today: devoid of the superfluous, aesthetically modern and unabashedly centered on functionality. To further educate about the very latest in kitchen design, Poggenpohl luminaries I-ching Ueng, san Francisco showroom manager and designer, and Luiza Bajkowska, New York city Poggenpohl designer, shared a few of the most alluring new looks in the kitchen. “White gloss finishes seem to be dominating; clients want clean lines and the least amount of busyness—the opposite of the outside world, where they are being overloaded with information and clutter,” Bajkowska says. In addition to high-gloss and matte finishes, as well as handless design (a technology that speaks to the clean-lined Poggenpohl aesthetic), Ueng notes a general paradigm shift in the kitchen. “More and more people in the United states are following what has been true in Europe for many years, which is that kitchens are viewed as products, not just building materials,” she says. Ueng makes an interesting point, which might be taken a touch further: kitchens are viewed as art, not just products.

Durability is a must—melamine took over the lacquers.

The big picture: Modern style with clean design Sources of inspiration: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, sustainability, advancing technology Well-designed kitchen: Intuitive workflow, no confusion Well-designed cabinetry: Functional! On the radar: Retro design woven into pure and modern spaces Continuity vs. eclecticism: cohesion. Either monochromatic or a thoughtful combination of colors and materials that integrate with the rest of the décor of the house Uniquely Poggenpohl: german precision and innovation with flexibility that aspires to individual needs 2

Every well-designed kitchen should have a good working axis between the stove, refrigerator and sink— and beautiful stone or tile. WHAT’s trendIng

decoration: consumers are looking for creative patterns and colorways for floors and walls. Moroccan and Southern Italian motifs offer amazing geometric and figurative patterns that can be used in many ways, even in modern interiors. Organic shapes in stone are trending, as are gray and blue in both ceramic and stone. Porcelain tile technology that mimics other materials, like wood, stone or concrete, is a major trend being embraced for residential and commercial work.

The temperature just spiked courtesy summer’s latest interior accents and fashion accessories that appear to be heavily influenced by four distinct cities. Here, the Southwestern feel of Santa Fe creates an instant heat wave by way of Ralph Lauren’s printed throw alongside Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ reinvigorated Kazan chair. In a city known for its great respect of art and culture, Santa Fe continues to inspire; case in point is the renowned Santa Fe Indian Market (detail shown below) that draws an array of folk artists and enthusiasts from around the globe. Even one of fashion’s elite, Veronica Etro, turned to the desert for her latest RTW line, as traditional Navaho prints, daring fringed heels and bohemian embellishments strutted down the runway. These free-spirited pieces are no mirage, but rather the perfect tangibles for imbuing a little adobe-chic into any home.

The Côte d’Azur has lured individuals of the art and design worlds for centuries, and it would appear that its most recent persuasions over fashion and interiors have us once again longing for a deep breath of that fresh coastline air. Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg looked to the French Riviera for inspiration when creating her painterly Spring/Summer 2015 RTW collection, giving nods to Matisse and Picasso, frequenters of this seaside escape, through fun floral patterns displayed on wispy silks, while San Francisco interior designer Antonio Martins evoked a touch of coastal style when fashioning this impressive haphazard-tiled wall, exuding ancient references brought into modern day with a striking sideboard reminiscent of a coral reef. At this rate, we’re ready to grab our passports and say bonjour to laidback living at its best.

HAUTE COUTURE

Always the trailblazer—whether it be in fashion, food or design—Milan has long been setting the tone for the rest of the world. And, when it comes to style and décor, it’s not just about the art of the mix, but more importantly, the element of surprise. Here, designer Barry Dixon’s seemingly turn-of-the-century Synapse pendant complements both the sleek, modern lines of B&B Italia’s Metropolitan ottoman and the delicate form of Nina Tolstrup's Tall chair. Milan is by nature an effortlessly sartorial city, yet it’s not a reputation easily received without great thought and consideration. British fashion duo Peter Pilotto exercises the city’s fearlessness in their latest runway collection, where silhouette and pattern are brazenly exhibited through unorthodox materials like Perspex.

COPENHAGEN

STRAIGHT FORWARD

Many mistake the fact that simplistic design requires less effort, but quite to the contrary; it’s the simple silhouettes and uncomplicated structures that change the way design is perceived and experienced. It is this philosophy that dominates the persona of our next influential city: Copenhagen. Blonde wood, open shapes and brushed-gold finishes are constant qualities synonymous with Denmark’s capital. Barber & Osgerby illustrate the art of this finesse in the Hula stool, which by appearances is seemingly straightforward, but upon further investigation, offers itself as either fixed seating or a rocking stool. But perhaps the father of modern Danish design, Finn Juhl, whose colorful sideboard is shown, sums up quintessential Copenhagen style best of all with his clean-lined furnishings. “One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects,” he says, “but one can spoil quite a lot of happiness with bad ones.”

Feel: The Air sofa is a modern shape that will feel more classic as time passes. It seems like a piece that would inspire our personal aesthetic to grow and change. Color: The strength of the color is that it’s a bold shade that acts as a neutral. The mossy green recalls nature and feels fresh. Statement: This silhouette demands attention and would inform the design of the rest of the room. It sets a tone of sophistication and class—you can’t go wrong with those brass legs! Sense: This piece would smell of old maps, leather and cigars, yet with a hint of perfume.

Collaboration: Partnerships like this bring together old and new creative talents, often resulting in beautiful and unexpected design. Collection: The pieces feel like a blend of both antiquity and modern taste. Each pattern is rich and intricate, but together they remain cohesive. Palette: Gray is the new white. The soft palette whispers of the beauty found in the handmade and nuanced details that feel very aligned with Fortuny’s heritage. Story: This collection reminds me of ancient vessels found at archeological digs in Egypt and then revived with an artisanal sensibility that fits into today’s world.

Brilliance: The resin top of this bench is quite kaleidoscopic. For me, it’s all about color and pattern: A vibrant mix of shapes and materials can make something quite classic in style feel fresh and modern. fun: Playfulness is very important. I like design with a good heart and a strong personality. Mood: This bench attracts attention. It feels Jurassic—the top looks as if it’s made from ancient, vibrant fossils. Designer: I am taken with how playful and fearless Christopher’s work is; he’s an artist with a sense of humor. His collection, for me, recalls the Space Age. Contrast: The contrast of black and white is striking. These tables are modern art sculptures and conversation starters. Color can complicate the design process and take away from the bold minimalism of a silhouette. These tables, especially the painted piece, still feel simple though the pattern is random and wild. Vision: The tables are seemingly optical illusions: If you look at them long enough, you might see something unexpected.

artistry: Robert Long’s pieces redefine the traditional sconce. His lighting style blurs the line between art and functional design. Materiality: The handblown glass adds rusticity to the sophisticated design, while the polished brass balances the fixture with modern simplicity. craftsmanship: The handmade process breathes life into a product and into our homes. I believe the importance of the maker movement is in keeping the tradition of skilled labor alive; it is design and skill passed down from one generation to the next. final thought: “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.’’—William Morris

Intel ArchItecture + energy Ronald J. Rickert II, AIA, Principal 1615 South Federal Highway, Suite 206 • Boca Raton, Florida • 561.672.7124 ron@intelae.com • intelae.com All roads led to the Intracoastal for the design inspiration of this Miami Beach waterfront home. “The homeowner’s objectives were to maximize views and create an open living floor plan,” shares Ronald Rickert, principal of Intel Architecture + Energy. Rickert, a Florida native with a penchant for designing with subtropical living in mind, fulfilled the homeowner’s wishes by creating a large great room, bar, kitchen and master bedroom viewing to the water on the second floor and ensured the home’s longevity by instituting best-in-class building methodology and materials. “The open living floor plan boasts ICF construction, which consists of solid concrete walls and roofs with 3 inches of insulation on the inside and outside of the exterior walls,” Rickert says. “This creates one of the most comfortable, quiet, healthy and hurricane-resistant buildings available in the market. By combining Passive architectural principles and modern elements, this sanctuary will set a new mark in the residential market.”

Architecture is successful when site and structure are in direct collaboration. In this case, the play between view and structural geometry is pertinent.

Phillip Thomas, Principal 2011 Northeast 52nd Court • Fort Lauderdale, Florida • 954.306.9006 phil@southernestateshomes.com • southernestateshomes.com With an emphasis on working closely with a project’s homeowners and architect, Southern Estates Signature Homes was appropriately enlisted to meticulously execute the inspiring plans of South Florida architect Ronald Rickert. The waterfront home, exemplary in its use of energy-efficient building construction, uses 30 to 40 percent less AC than conventional CMU homes and features a wall system that reduces allergens, humidity and infiltration. Phillip Thomas, a custom builder of South Florida estate homes since 1985, explains that what really brought this home to life was its “design and use of natural stones throughout.” “Key elements,” he adds, “include the use of natural lighting, creative entertainment patio areas, a custom pool and concrete dock, coupled with a tropical landscape theme, all emphasizing views of the Intracoastal Waterway.”

First impressions set the stage for what lies beyond—entry into the magical world that is your home.

happy hues and bold palettes turn the home’s hardest-working spaces into functional showpieces that think outside the box. written by brielle m. ferreira it’s easy to see why white kitchens and bathrooms are so popular in the modern home—like a signature dish perfected over many potlucks and dinner parties, they are ideal for the chef who wants to play it safe. they’re elegant and classic and show no signs of going out of style. for those seeking a little more adventure in their interiors, though, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the allure of color, of bold, lookat-me spaces that demand the spotlight. thankfully, today’s bold kitchens and baths banish all memories of the avocado refrigerators and pale pink tiles of yesteryear; instead, their vibrant palettes borrow their power from high fashion and graphic style for spaces that are decidedly à la mode.

andrew howard

interior designer andrew howard cooks up a dreamy kitchen scene in varying shades of blue for this familyfriendly florida kitchen. andrewjhoward.com How did you decide on the serene blue palette? it was a happy accident. we were looking for countertops, and we weren’t quite sure what we wanted to do, but when we found this interesting blue marble, everything clicked. the whole kitchen was then born from there.

favorite thing about a colorful kitchen? it has a special “wow” factor you don’t get from a more traditional space. the kitchen is where your friends and family spend about 90 percent of their time when they’re with you; it’s fun to give them something they’ve never seen.

What would you say to those afraid of using color in a kitchen? don’t be! even if you’re a little hesitant to paint all of your cabinets a certain shade, you can bring in color in small ways for a big impact. a hint of hue on your backsplash or barstools can go a long way.

SO REFRESHING The dreamy mixology depicted in powerhouse recipe developer María del Mar Sacasa and photographer Tara Striano’s beautifully bound volume, Summer Cocktails, proves that there’s more than one way to bring color to the kitchen, like through pretty garnishes and powerful potions crafted to keep the party going. quirkbooks.com

LEAFY GREENS Legendary Palm Beach ceramicist Dodie Thayer’s signature lettuce ware has been highly coveted by a rather formidable crowd—think Brooke Astor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis—since she threw the first plate back in the 1960s. However, with the supply of the iconic green (Duncan Irish Green to be exact) tableware in serious decline, it was only a matter of time before these vintage beauties went extinct; that is before Tory Burch stepped in, with the fashion heavy hitter recently teaming up with Thayer to put the preppy staples back into production and back on kitchen shelves for good. toryburch.com

MAKE A SPLASH

Glass mosaic tiles from Ann Sacks in navy, turquoise, gray and white are laid together in thick chevron stripes that transform the backsplash of this crisp kitchen into a work of art. The space, by San Francisco-based designer Ali Davin, relies on this colorful statement piece to bring life to an otherwise simple, Shaker-style kitchen. “When you have a bold graphic moment like the backsplash, you can’t give it a lot of other competition,” says Davin. “It’s important to keep the built-in lines clean and ornamentation and hardware to a minimum.” jutehome.com

COOL RUNNINGS The newest colorway from vintage-inspired appliance company Smeg—a sunny modern yellow meant to become the focal point of the kitchen—embraces the cool retro style of the brand’s signature refrigerators and ovens with a bit of extra flair not meant for the faint of heart. smegusa.com 188 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN

POOL & GARDEN designer katherine shenaman creates a lush backyard escape accented With vintage furnishings and the vibrant hue of blooming bougainvillea. What went into dreaming up such a magical, breathtaking place? With the house located across the street from the ocean, the clients requested an area that would give them privacy. the layers of hedging, australian pine and ficus trees helped create the feeling of a secret garden, albeit in a tropical setting. the design is a reflection of the interiors, simple and serene, with a much more dynamic color palette thanks to the bursts of flowers throughout. the space is simple and elegant, private yet inviting, and full of a lush beauty that is very difficult to manufacture. tell me about the need for distinct seating spaces. by nature of its structure, the pergola essentially defined the seating area. the vintage iron chairs, for example, are the perfect place to enjoy the garden views. i wanted to ensure the space felt fresh and updated, hence the crisp white upholstered cushions. the faux-bois stone setting was created for something a bit more intimate—a place where the clients can escape for a cozy candlelit dinner amongst the orchids and sea grape tree. Your design philosophy is rooted in classicism. Is anything from that style represented here? this space is a classic example of the enfilades seen in historic european architecture. as soon as you step onto this property, you feel as though you’re moving through a series of connected rooms in anticipation of something grand at the end. interior design / katherine shenaman / katherine shenaman interiors / shenaman.com. landscape design / madderlake / madderlake.com. patio cushion fabric / perennials / davidsutherlandshowroom.com. sconces / carolina lanterns / carolinalanterns.com.

Looking around, I notice a theme of arches. They obviously influenced your design somewhat. I wanted to be true to the architecture of this 1934 Mediterranean home while also creating an elegant yet inviting and comfortable space. the arches definitely influenced the design, as you’ll see them in the windows, shelving and arms of the Lucite chairs, all reminiscent of the arches found so frequently throughout Mediterranean architecture.

What elements lend to the room’s traveled and collected feel? this room is where I keep my collection of personal treasures, reminding me of special occasions and happy times traveling. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel widely to such foreign locations as China, India and Indonesia. I seem to have an affinity for the exotic and have brought home many interesting pieces. growing up in puerto rico, the culture appreciates handmade, artisanal pieces, and I feel that my childhood is very much reflected here.

What makes this a great space to curl up and relax? With the room facing Indian Creek, I come here every morning to have my café con leche as I listen to music by Andrea Bocelli or curl up on the Haitian cotton loveseat to delve into a good book. the most important aspect in making a sun porch the perfect spot is to surround yourself with the things you love and let the sun do the rest.

EVEN GROUND

POOL & GARDEN a verdant plane becomes the perfect playing field for the refined aesthetics of landscape designer keith williams.

What went into devising such a level and symmetrical garden? when i first saw the space it was overgrown and oversaturated with greenery. the site required excavating as it needed many level and grade changes because it was sitting on top of an old limestone base. after peeling back the jungle, we exposed some amazing trees, as well as gained additional lighting and space. before designing, i envisioned the old gnarly tree placed asymmetrically, becoming the focal point of the area. all of the other landscaping was brought in later and built around the tree’s presence.

Is a dark, inky pool a typical request in South Florida? many of my clients desire bright-colored pools as they feel a darker-hued one can start to resemble the local ponds. however, this wasn’t the case here. we instead chose a dark pool for this design because it blends in with the landscape and eliminates a lot of contrast that would occur with a lighter pool. the pool really defines the space itself.

Is there a science behind such a simple, muted landscape? simple projects can sometimes be more difficult and intricate than complex designs, but for me, the science is in knowing when to put the pen down. it was very clear that we wanted a clean, simple and tightly landscaped design. we wanted to keep the space minimal to serve as an empty palette for our client, giving her the flexibility to express her own creativity however she may choose.

What are some of your favorite plants and blooms to work with in your designs? i love crabapples, as they are quintessentially midwest and a wonderful way to shake off the cold. fothergilla “Blue shadow” is another personal favorite, as its glaucous blue leaves can brighten a semi-shady spot all summer long. Container gardens continue to increase in popularity, as water becomes more of a valuable commodity, especially in droughtprone areas like Southern California. Just because they’re practical, however, doesn’t also mean they can’t be fun. Los Angelesbased designer Kathleen Ferguson suggests using pots in unexpected shapes, colors and textures to add interest to your outdoor space. “Succulents and cacti are my favorite plantings for container gardens,” she says, “but I love fitting them with herbs and other edibles, too. They allow you to truly enjoy your garden year-round.” kathleenferguson.com

A well-done hardscape can unify all the elements in a garden, which makes it an integral part of the outdoor experience; however, it can be hard to foster a dreamy, romantic aesthetic from large expanses of paver or limestone. Integrating some lush groundcover, like thyme or dichondra, between the stones, as the Lambert Landscape Company did for this pretty Dallas home, can completely transform the space. lamberts.net

W

hen architect Mitchell Kunik was first approached by his friend and colleague of 30 years to realize the vision he had for his new Boca Raton home, the idea was to create a residence that would respect and enhance the historic neighborhood’s eclectic architectural styles. The client had taken a transformative trip to California and, having been inspired by the legendary midcentury modern homes in Beverly Hills’ storied Trusdale Estates, he imagined a similarly pristine, glass-ensconced oasis here that could celebrate and enable true indoor-outdoor living and entertaining. The homeowner was first attracted to the site by a line of tall Casuarina trees guarding the property. “The idea was for the house to be a gem behind the veil, if you will, of these trees,” explains Kunik, who collaborated with architect Benjamin Schreier to set the project in motion. “Once we got through the veil, we could do anything.”

The added privacy from the trees, as well as a perimeter wall and additional mature plantings selected by the owner, allows the house to be utterly transparent without feeling vulnerable. “My goal was to create a unique home that, once you move beyond the entry courtyard, opens to a dramatic, radiant interior,” the owner says, noting the shielded simplicity and restraint that can be seen from the street. “I love the outdoors, and the extensive use of floor-to-ceiling glass and wide gallery hallways provides the ability to see the expansive courtyards and pool area from virtually every vantage point within the home.” Those windows employ the most efficient coated glass, with a new generation of technology that allows them to minimize heat gain without having to be tinted. One wing of the U-shaped house contains a continuous kitchen, dining area and family room, set back from the glass wall to allow easy passage through to a study on the other side of a wraparound fireplace. “The client insisted upon the symmetry of the kitchen and the island lining

The Italian porcelain flooring on the walkway continues inside for a modern feel—just one example of the continuity of materials throughout the home. up with the fireplace in the family room,” recalls designer Lindsey Snyder, who teamed with fellow designer Tiffany Bowman on the interiors—a scope that included assuring a continuity of surfaces in the home. Indeed, the quartz countertop of the kitchen island ideally complements the glossy lacquer of the kitchen cabinetry. And that wraparound fireplace is clad in crystal vein-cut travertine, just one of many luxurious materials that make the house sing and lend a new age feel to the midcentury modern architecture, including Italian porcelain floor tiles throughout and a striking threedimensional mosaic tile wall in the master bath. Throughout the house, which mixes midcentury- and contemporary-style furniture, the base palette remains neutral with the space punctuated by “pops of color in art, pillows and throw blankets,” says Bowman. “The owner also wanted to incorporate an organic feel, which you see in the live-edge dining table, for instance. I like the juxtaposition against the really clean, smooth kitchen aesthetic.”

Glass walls look out at a pair of interior courtyards, which are separated by a long covered terrace. The first courtyard features a quartet of large Sylvester palm trees, which speaks to the precision requested by the owner as much as the architecture and interiors do. “It was important that the trees lined up perfectly,” recalls landscape designer Anthony Sciortino, who worked very closely with the homeowner on the outdoor scheme. “We had to draw string lines and make sure they matched in height and thickness. You have a diamond-cut texture to the wood. At night, with the elegant lighting, it’s just breathtaking.” The second courtyard is oriented around a swimming pool flanked by another sunken lounge and barbecue area. What’s more, all of these spaces can be seen at once as one enters the house, straight ahead through the glass walls. In keeping with midcentury modern design, a continuous ceiling height emphasizes this horizontality, almost like a succession of movie sets awaiting scenes.

The control system for all of the home automation, by Palm Beach Electronics, is housed in the family room’s cabinetry. A custom sofa joins stainless-steel lounge chairs and an upholstered coffee table, all by Bernhardt, as well as a floor lamp from Design Within Reach. Wood Slice wall tiles from Phillips Collection provide a natural element.

Daltile’s Metallica stainless-steel penny round mosaics, installed by Scarsdale Tile & Carpet, form a backsplash in the powder room. A ceramic sink sits atop a travertine base between industrial pendants from Restoration Hardware.

“With these midcentury modern homes, it’s about the fluidity of the architectural experience as you move through the space,” Kunik says. In between the two courtyards, the covered lanai is ideal for entertaining, with its own outdoor living and dining areas looking out at the pool and back at the interior through the glass. “Not many of the homes we do have that 10-foot-high ceiling inside and a loggia with the same height, and everything from the flooring to the ceiling running inside and out,” observes builder Scott Pfendler, who helmed the construction with his father, Rick Pfendler. “Here, you really do have that indooroutdoor permeability.”

Though the home’s clean lines, precise symmetry and sumptuous materials give it a luxurious and wide-open feel that accommodates large gatherings, it’s also comfortable for when it’s just the owner and his two Weimaraners who enjoy an active lifestyle indoors and out. And most of all, whether it’s amidst the glass-festooned interior architecture or in one of the home’s generous outdoor spaces, the end result is a kind of contemporary oasis. “Because of my work, my life is crazy and hectic all day,” the homeowner says. “When I come home, open the doors and all I see is the serenity of the parklike setting with its swaying coconut palms and manicured landscape of Bermuda grass and the pool, I feel as if I am transported to a place were I am finally able to relax.”

Crystal vein-cut travertine continues into the office from the family room fireplace on the other side of the wall. A metal-and-glass trestle table from Williams-Sonoma Home and Bernhardt’s walnut armchairs provide a mix of midcentury and contemporary styles that complement the home’s architecture.

rue artists can be known simply by experiencing their work: one look at their pieces and immediately you have a window into their soul. Such is the case with Jenny Kiker, who pours herself into her creations using walls as her canvas. Living Pattern, her bespoke line of wallpapers and textiles, comprises mini reflections of her that are at once fresh, modern and organic. Her prints are a menagerie of lush flora and fauna that bring the outside in, with muses ranging from maidenhair ferns to the small detail of a beetle’s back. “I was looking through the book Pheromone: The Insect Artwork of Christopher Marley and immediately fell in love with this gorgeous Goliath beetle’s shell markings and knew I had to make it into a paper. It’s a new take on a cheetah print,” says Kiker, who works with her partner in business and in life, Chris Johnston. Kiker’s by-hand approach to making pattern is what sets her apart, drawing and developing her motifs in her studio before they are printed in Chicago. Though she uses traditional techniques, she does so with a clean, contemporary lean that speaks to her love of Australian design. “It’s bright with hints of modern but still organic,” she notes of the region’s aesthetic. “Australian designers are the world’s trendsetters to me. I love how they take black and white and add saturated pops of color.” When the artist isn’t busy brushing her next stroke or inking her custom stamps, she can easily be spotted driving around town in Little Donkey, her 1990 ecruhued Ford Ranger, foraging for new inspirations to bring back to her studio. Perched above the Brass Scale Antiques shop in West Palm Beach, her work space is brimming with nods to Mother Nature. “I’m a plant hoarder,” she says. “My studio is basically a greenhouse. If I’m not sketching, I usually have a plant mister in my hand. I’ve always looked to nature to spark my imagination.” luxe interiors + design / 243

SPIRIT an authentic renovation of a historic residence stays true to the home’s origins but takes a refreshing, fashionable approach. written by linda hayes / photography by mark roskams

A

rchitect and builder Zeb Jarosz uses the term sotto voce—an Italian opera term meaning soft voice—to describe his approach to preserving the integrity of a 1920s Mediterranean Revivalstyle home on Miami Beach’s Venetian Islands. “I believe in understated simplicity,” he explains. “As with anything in life, if you have an important message to convey, you should speak softly.” Before the owners—a family with three small children— purchased the residence, the house had already undergone an interior renovation. But it didn’t meet their needs or suit their lifestyle. “The house had very closed-up rooms, so it was not fully used, and the colors were a mix of dark blues, reds and yellows,” says the wife. “We entertain a lot and have lots of family and visitors around throughout the year. We wanted there to be a calmer, more open feel and flow, and for the house to be more livable.” As the goal of the project began to grow far beyond a simple redo of the second floor into a more comprehensive renovation and addition, preserving the main structure took on greater significance. “The house was one of the first of the Venetian Islands homes and it emulated the original style of development that was popular in Miami Beach in the 1920s. It was important that we be respectful of the original details,” Jarosz recalls of the renovation—a collaborative effort with designers Robert S. Brown and Todd D. Davis, who were involved with the overall aesthetic and vision for the home. Jarosz’s experience with historical preservation, which began after he studied architecture in Krakow, Poland, prepared him for the task. “I have a true appreciation for architecture of the past and all its underlying purpose, symbolic elements and technique of construction,” he notes. “In my work I try to translate that past into contemporary reality but still preserve its essence of proportion and scale. Otherwise, it just becomes a caricature.” The first step was to obtain historical designation, which allowed for more flexibility to preserve various elements of the house and conduct work that ordinarily wouldn’t be allowed under the current code. Structurally, that work involved

everything from correcting age-related structural problems to installing new plumbing and electrical components. Aesthetically, it meant a sensitive refreshment of the exterior features and finishes. “We remained essentially true to the original design by replicating the traditional rough texture of the stucco and the handmade clay barrel tiles on the roof,” Jarosz says. The addition of custom-crafted windows and doors, many of which are gracefully arched, adds to the period effect while being able to withstand hurricane winds. As the interior space was reconfigured, Brown and Davis specified interior architectural details such as the reclaimed Antique Dalle de Bourgogne French limestone flooring for the home’s first level and the custom-colored flooring in the newly added guesthouse, and they oversaw the material selections for the kitchen and bathrooms. Select furnishings—such as their custom cream sofas in the living room, and the sleek wood table and sculptural chandelier that they helped the owners procure for the dining room—began to set the tone for the interiors’ aesthetic and complement the architecture. Subsequently, Michael Dawkins was brought in to round out the interior design program, adding contrast to—yet further complementing—the architecture. “The design team had established a beautiful structure,” says Dawkins. “The house was historic, but the owners were a hip couple. We wanted to infuse a bit of modernism and make it work as a comprehensive whole.” Room by room, a mood was established. “We considered the indoor-outdoor Florida lifestyle, as well as the need to make things kid-friendly yet elegant,” says Dawkins. “The architecture is so prominent that we wanted to keep the rest as supporting characters.” S-shaped midcentury modern chairs, for instance, lend that mix of fun and sophistication to the dining room—“They add a sense of rhythm and playfulness to the room,” notes Dawkins—as does the grouping of tufted and shag ottomans in the lounge. Throughout, a significant collection of artwork punctuates the transitional nature of the home. Outdoor living was, of course, a major focus, as well. The architect, along with Brown and Davis early on, spruced up existing gardens, giving them a more formal European feel with box hedges and manicured lawns. At the rear, Jarosz designed that new guest pavilion at the far end of the existing swimming pool; it emulates the architecture of the house but is more modern. “Because of space constraints, the pavilion hangs over the pool and has a grotto effect,” says Jarosz. “You can swim underneath the overhang.” In the end, the home’s restoration did more than give new life to an important structure; it brought a sense of peace and calm to a growing family with an active lifestyle. “The entire house gets used all the time now, and I do like the juxtaposition of the more transitional interiors,” says the wife. With the house nodding to the past as it celebrates modern-day design, the architect shares the owners’ excitement. Says Jarosz: “We remained relatively true to the original design and updated only certain elements of the exterior but became more free with the interior layouts and details, interior decor and landscaping. It’s the poster child for restored homes in Miami Beach.”

have always been infatuated with the strength and appearance of raw, unfinished concrete,” says Troy Simmons, a South Florida-based artist whose star is quickly rising for his large-scale concrete canvases. To most, concrete is simply the stuff of historical monuments and urban jungles, but for Simmons, it’s the foundation of his modernist compositions, rendered from a disparate mix of acrylic paints and industrial materials. “I love the combination of rough and smooth, of old and new; even my studio is in a refurbished bakery from the 1950s,” says Simmons of his affinity for natural contrasts. Tucked inside the creative incubator known as The Bakehouse Art Complex, Simmons’ studio is strewn with chisels, upholstery tools, auto paint, acrylics, resin and aluminum, poised to construct one of his massive 300-pound works. “I enjoy experimenting with different materials, stretching the limits of its intended use,” he says. Though his artistic tools are usually relegated to construction zones, to hear Simmons wax poetic about architecture is to understand his inspiration: “I remember being captivated by Rainer Disse’s Feldberg Church while exploring southern Germany,” he says of his first experience with Brutalist architecture, a vernacular named for its raw aesthetic. “I was amazed by the large, repetitive geometric shapes created entirely with board-formed concrete. Though the rigidness of the man-made structure contradicted the natural

backdrop of the Black Forest, the juxtaposition seemed harmonious to me.” It is this fascination with the relationship between unrestrained nature and urbanism that keeps Simmons up at night, literally: Darkness has fallen and the electronic trill of Pantha du Prince rises to the rafters before Simmons settles into his work rhythm. “Midnight is when I’m at my most creative; it’s peaceful for me,” he says. “I construct the frame and lay the cement, then begin the process of deconstruction.” His latest home installation, a 10-foot-wide work featuring sleek strokes of saturated color, required a hydraulic lift and pure man power to hang in a house’s second story. But, “before physically starting a piece, I create sketches and three-dimensional renderings,” Simmons says of a process that speaks to his architectural roots. The Houston-bred artist, who shows at JanKossen Contemporary Art Gallery in New York and will unveil new works at Contemporary Istanbul in November, began his career as an environmental lab technician and earned an architectural degree before opportunity steered him back to his early artistic passions. “When I lived in Texas, environmental issues such as reforestation and water pollution were headline topics there. Through being exposed to these issues, my work took on a strong manversus-nature theme,” Simmons notes. “My latest work reflects the diversity felt in the tapestry of South Florida. Layers of ideas, people, and cultures all mixed into one urban environment.”

ometimes what seems a minor detour in the day’s plans becomes a life-changing event. This was certainly the case when Steven Newman was on his way to the mall one afternoon with his sister and decided to look at an available property instead. Within minutes of seeing the lakefront site in Delray Beach, he was calling his partner, Steve Johnson, to fly in from New York for a look. They bought the land without hesitation, and before long their vacation retreat was set into the landscape. The original plan was to build a Mediterranean-style house inside and out, much like the owners’ vacation home they would leave behind in Boca Raton. But their interior designer, Susan Lachance, had another idea: The house would be Mediterranean on the outside, yes, but in striking contrast, clean and contemporary for the interiors. It was a concept that didn’t take much of a leap of faith for the couple. “We love the juxtaposition,” Steven says. “It reminds us of our trips to Italy, where we saw homes that were hundreds of years old but then the insides were totally modernized.” luxe interiors + design / 267

The couple’s design team, which also included architect Stuart Brenner, builder Aldo J. Kosuch and landscape architect Krent Wieland, went to work for 18 months to begin bringing the concept to life. “We were going to build this residence similar to their previous home, but they decided to make changes in the style, and everything became grander in scale,” says Kosuch, who worked with superintendent Robert “Bud” Monz on the build. Brenner, who joined Lachance in designing the couple’s previous retreat, concurs. “Some of the architectural elements of the Boca Raton home were integrated here, but the scale and volume changed. We took this to another level,” he says, noting that though the larger space works well for entertaining and having houseguests, the challenge was also to create space that was comfortable and cozy when the couple is there alone. Once the refreshed architecture was in place, Lachance then put a twist on the Mediterranean design components of traditional arched halls, stone surfaces and high-ceilinged

rooms. “I wanted to give them a metropolitan look, combining the light-colored traditional architectural envelope with clean, contemporary furnishings,” says the designer, who incorporated classic finishes and materials like wood and marble in refreshing ways. To this end, in the two-story living room, with its spectacular view of the infinity pool that seems to flow right into the lake, Lachance specified a massive paneled wall to bring the vertical space onto one elevation, employing wenge wood, stainless-steel bands and porcelain tile to house a linear fireplace that adds warmth to the voluminous room and reduces the vertical pull. The rich wood contrasting with the cream porcelain ties the space back to the wood-and-marble flooring in the nearby entry and hallway. “This gives balance to my concept of having a common thread throughout my work,” Lachance says. “I always bring you back to the same material or motif. I believe you need to reinforce design to have good design.”

Above: In the living room, Thayer Coggin sofas and chairs sit atop a rug from Mastour Galleries in New York. The Bolier tables blend with the neutral scheme, along with a tripod lamp from Carriage House. Interior designer Susan Lachance conceived of the fireplace wall, fabricated by Artistry Masters of Woodcraft. Opposite: A Celestial chandelier by Fine Art Lamps dangles like a glittering jewel in the dramatic stairway off the foyer, featuring a railing by Avion Metal Works of Florida. Stationary Romo sheers, fabricated by Drapery Castle, frame the view.

A Vol de Cristal chandelier by Fine Art Lamps hangs above the dining room’s Costantini Pietro table and chairs. A Kala Looms rug serves as a wash of color, as do the draperies made from Zinc Textile fabric, again fashioned by Drapery Castle. French doors from Coastal Supply Company open onto a garden.

The dining room features a custom-built floating sideboard that is topped in stone, banded in a dark walnut stain and faced with four large bevel-paneled doors. Fabricated by Artistry Masters of Woodcraft, it’s a pleasing art form itself below a painting from the owners’ collection.

A Thayer Coggin sofa, chair and coffee table gather atop a sisal rug in the casual family room; a Forma floor lamp by Cerno allows for a reading niche. Sliding doors open to create an indoor-outdoor living space with the adjacent loggia, which houses Janus et Cie furnishings and a light fixture by Murray’s Iron Works from J Nelson.

Artistica’s dark walnut Bento table from Judith Norman centers side chairs by Bernhardt in the breakfast room. The sculptural centerpieces add dashes of blue, the owners’ exception to the rule when it comes to their penchant for neutrals. Wood flooring from Absolute Hardwood Flooring sustains the contemporary feel.

Faceted, etched-glass fixtures by Hinkley Lighting, from Capitol Lighting, hover over the kitchen island, where wenge-wood barstools sport polished-chrome bases. Appliances from Ferguson settle into the sea of white cabinetry by Kitchen & Bath Studios and a backsplash installed by Tile & Marble by Valentin.

An area rug from Wendy Clark Designs sets the tone for the master bedroom, where calming shades of blue provide a tranquil retreat for the owners, seen in the Robert Allen fabric that fashions the draperies. A photograph by EJ Camp adds to the serenity next to a custom mirror from Majestic Mirror & Frame.

“I WANTED TO GIVE THEM A METROPOLITAN LOOK WITH CLEAN, CONTEMPORARY FURNISHINGS.” -SUSAN LACHANCE

Instead of the expected stucco-and-dark-wood interior, Lachance created a bright, airy scheme using brusheddriftwood flooring for a less formal effect and white as her primary color. The neutral palette of light walls and furnishings allows the architectural details and dreamy garden and water views to take center stage, with the archways and expansive windows helping frame the outdoor scene. Conversational areas feature sculpted sofas and club chairs covered in warm white and taupe that enable the pieces to sit quietly in their respective rooms. The near-monochromatic theme throughout the home reflects the couple’s preference—seen in the living room, the nearby breakfast room, and the kitchen and adjacent family room, which overlooks a loggia and promotes indoor-outdoor living through its doors that slide open 276 / luxe interiors + design

completely and disappear. The exceptions to the rule are the gradating shades of blue in the dining room and master suite. “We are color averse—we love things that are neutral. When Susan said we needed to put in some color, well, we put one red book in the family room,” Steven muses. For the outside landscape plan, the couple wanted to replicate elements of the Chianti countryside as a nod to their beloved travels in Italy. Set on 3 acres, the property was primed for Wieland and project manager Aaron Mastin to create such an aesthetic through plantings and water features. “When we were discussing likes and dislikes with Krent, we all decided to make the garden like a villa in Italy with the reflecting pools and fountains,” Steven recalls. “The back of the house has a sitting garden and other rest areas that take in views of the water or the entire length of the property.” In contrast, the front of the home was designed with privacy in mind. “The plantings here were given a more peekaboo treatment,” Wieland says. “It creates a little mystique.” Ultimately, the design achieved everything the owners wanted—a tranquil yet fashionable escape from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives in Manhattan. “The views are amazing,” Steven says. “They’re relaxing and comforting. Whenever we come here, we just hate to leave.”

A striking dark wood center table punctuates the elegant master bathroom, wrapped in marble from Marble of the World that was installed by Tile & Marble by Valentin. The round nickel light fixture above, whose shade recalls the table’s curvature, is by Visual Comfort & Co.
