HISPANIC AFFAIRS ADVISORY The Miami-Dade County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board (MDCHAAB) was established by Ordinance No. 92-41 in May 1992 at the request of former Commissioner and Mayor Alex Penelas. Its thirteen (13) members are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to serve in an advisory capacity to them, to the community and to all agencies and persons in Miami-Dade County, Florida, “with respect to matters pertaining to the Hispanic community of Miami-Dade County”. The membership of the HAAB reflects the diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds represented in Miami-Dade County. The HAAB is responsible for addressing the concerns of the Hispanic community in Miami-Dade County. The board among other duties is responsible for promoting positive images of the Hispanic and their many contributions to society; and to serve as a medium for responsible persons to utilize and consult with in attempting to understand and solve the many complex problems involved with the Hispanic community in MiamiDade County.

Monthly Meetings: The MDCHAAB is the official representative of the Hispanic community in MiamiDade County. Attend the regular monthly meetings which are held on the Second Tuesday of each month at the Cubaocho Art and Research Center 1465 SW 8 St. Suite 106, Miami, Florida, at 5:30 p.m. The MDCHAAB Special Committees and Task Forces also hold meetings at other times. All meetings are open to the public. The board gratefully accepts contributions to help fund its Signature Event and Special Projects. Mission Statment: MDCHAAB – as established by the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners to improve the quality of life of Hispanic citizens – is to identify and monitor the needs and/or interests of Hispanic citizens, develop programs addressing such issues, encourage involvement of Hispanics in matters of community concerns, support the development of Hispanics in leadership roles, and recommend to the Board of County Commissioners legislation supporting Hispanic issues.


HISPANIC AFFAIRS ADVISORY MDCHAAB Accomplishments:

The board has accomplished much in its eighteen (18) years of service to the community. A few highlights are: • Hosting educational T.V. and Radio Programs on issues of concern to the Hispanic community. • “Hispanic in the New Millennium Seminar”. A series of workshops held which explored the contributions made and the challenges faced by Hispanics in key areas such as; education, business, politics, social progress and well being, and the role of Hispanic women. • “Hispanic in the New Millennium Seminar”. A series of workshops held which explored the contributions made and the challenges faced by Hispanics in key areas such as; education, business, politics, social progress and well being, and the role of Hispanic women. • Public Forum on the Importance of Becoming Billiterate or fluent + 1, other language in order to be able to compete in the Global Market. • The HAAB Hispanic Role Model and Future Leader of theYear Award Luncheon – To present an award to a Hispanic who has demonstrated to be a role model by his/her accomplishments and contributions to the Hispanic community and to a young Hispanic who has made a difference in his/her community who will become a future community leader. • Community needs assessment hearings • S ignature Event – “Hispanic Art E x p r e s s i o n s E x h i b i t ” c e l eb r a t i n g Hispanic Hispanic Heritage Month in October. The exhibit showcases the rich Hispanic culture through paintings and sculptures. • T ax Fairs – a way of bringing free tax service to the community and to educate the constituents to comply With the law by paying their taxes on time. • R adio and T.V. board members appearances to speak on in English issues of concern to the Hispanic community • Health Fairs • Town Hall Meetings • Public Forums on Immigration and the changes in the law. • Information and Referral Services • P ublic Forums on Women Domestic Violence as it refers to the Hispanic women. • P ublic Forums between the Puerto Rican/Cuban communities to enhance the ties between the two communities.
