MODULAR LUNAR ARCHITECTURE

HOCHSCHULE ANHALT - D/A - STUDIO III

Instructor : Prof. Eric Helter

“You can examine the project by watching our project animation.”

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (Group Project) MoLunAr is an architectural project

that we have designed at the Lean-style habitat thesis studio Winter semester. The aim of the studio is to develop a concept for a manned lunar base on the Moon, including motivation and goals, with a newly simplified perspective, just as the Bauhaus school did 100 years ago next to us. Methods of the studio are to simplify existing technologies and try to use them more functionally.

1

Our concept is based on a modular construction system which can be expanded for the future missions. We used foldable bellows to fit cargo rockets and minimize the transportation costs. We designed the first habitat with screw conveyor system to carry the lunar dust (regolith) easily to the top part. Thus, we used the local source, regolith, in order to protect astronates from the radiation and meteroids on the lunar surface.

ANALYSIS • The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite and the fifth largestmoon in the solar system. • With a radius of 1,737.5 kilometers, the Moon is less than a third the width of Earth. • The journey from earth to moon takes about 3 days with our current technology. • The Moon has a very thin atmosphere called an exosphere. •Avarage surface gravity is 1.62 m/s2, which is 6 times lowerthan Earth. •The atmosphere of the Moon can be compared with the density of the upper most layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, where is ISS is located. •Since there is almost no atmosphere on the Moon, there is no pressure. •Radiation exposure at the lunar surface throughout the year ranges from 100 to 380 mSv (milisievert).

STARTER SET (Tool Kit)

DESIGN In our project, we describe ‘Molunar’ not just as a single lunar base but as a

construction system.

lunar-base

This means with the Molunar system, people can design and build various types of Lunar bases for different conditions with using variety of capsules, connections, and mechanics.

The open-ended building concept

offers endless possibilities to design a different base every time we need to settle in a new location on the moon. All parts of the first mission were combined in a modular way, from the Starter Set

Tool Kit.

4

1st MISSION In the first missions to be on the moon, the concept of security comes to the fore more urgently and in a more necessary way than in the future phases. Due to this urgency, all kinds of risky high technology have been avoided and simpler but effective solutions have been focused on.

The bellows system, which has a very simple mechanic as you will see on this page, shows how the kevlar textile cover that will provide radiation and mini-meteorit protection works. The basic radiation protection of starter set capsule is provided by the most basic and available material on the moon, regolith. Regolith can simply be described as moon dust or sand. A thickness of a cover by this material between 1-2 meters can provide protection against extremely high radiation in the moon.

5

Since the moon does not have atmosphere and pressure, technologies such as vacuum cannot be used to transport this material like in the world, so we developed the screw conveyor system. This conveyor is fed with regolith on the bottom part and is the transport mechanism that enables us to fill our bellows covers.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (Group Project) Project requires that group of two students will design an Architectural Faculty Cafeteria at the same location of the basketball courtyard. Throughout the semester, all students in the studio must produced total finished professional construction documents drawings of our designed project with their two membered group.

7

Decisions of each drawing were taken jointly and each group member contributed to each drawing. However, drawings were shared equally and each group member was responsible for controlling their own drawing. Shared drawings are indicated by red or blue squares according to the group members. Drawings that I responsible for showed with red square.

MATERIAL DECISION

In the design phase, we decided two type construction materials; concrete and steel. As exterior materials; steelglass and brick chosen to emphasize the two volume. Steel and glass was chosen more light and brigh space. It provides the view of the landscape. Brick material was chosen to ensure compliance with the campus and faculty buildings.

9

DESIGN In the design phase of the Architectural Faculty Cafeteria, inspired by location of the basketball courtyard. It was decided to place the building in the half of the basketball court. The aim was to create more SOCIAL AND ACTIVE space with the integration of the basketball court and the cafeteria.

The building created as TWO BIG VOLUME as the upper and lower parts. The upper part of the building is positioned towards the sea so that in the inside, people can observe the sea view. A terrace was created for students to watch basketball players. 10

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (Group Project) The Korean Museum was founded by the 65th Mechanized Infantry Brigade Command in Lüleburgaz. Currently, visitors cannot reach to the Korean Museum, because it is located in the military field. The aim of the project is to create public spaces that everyone could visit easily. The project considers to; establish relations with the city center in accordance with existing zoning plans.

15

It reflects the designs that will contribute to the identity of the city, contribute to the quality of urban life, create open and green spaces supported by environmental designs to highlight the human-nature relations. The design process of the project was carried out together with the group members. Group works showed green square and my personal works showed red square.

DESIGN PROCESS After the definition of gaps, the fiction of the Remembrance Journey was re-considered and the dimensions, locations where the scenario were determined. In the area, the preservation of the existing coppice forest and plant diversity has been considered. For this reason, existing gaps have been defined. The area which used for commemorative ceremony was placed at the South of the land. Because the South part is closer part of the city. Also, the existing coppice forest gives the sense of mourning and loneliness. The museum, administration and car parking area was placed at the North of the land. Connection between the museum and the remembrence was designed on the ground floor and -4.00 level. Remembrance Journey created by a tunnel which is connect the museum and memorial on the -4.00 level.

17

CIRCULATIONS

DESIGN The project is designed to remind the visitor the story of the Korean War and our soldiers, to make them feel and internalize. The MEMORIAL ROUTE, which is designed as a NEW RITUAL, aims to give the visitor a different perspective by establishing a bond of empathy with the EXPERIENCES of our soldiers who are going to the Korean War. THE ROUTE is designed as a journey in time and space.

The journey, which is a tunnel following the trail of the main path in the grove, allows the person to develop her/his EMPATY with the soldier who leaves behind his country - his family and far away, and to UNDERSTAND him and those feelings. The visitors have come a long way without knowing what to see. The only thing that remains of the world visitors know is the daylight from the present day, through the wall of the road visitors are walking. 18

LANDSCAPE In our landscaping design, the ecological approach was targeted and solutions were designed in accordance with the natural processes and ecological characteristics of which nature was taken as a model in the field design. The main objective in our design is to provide a model for future projects by developing a self-sufficient sustainable system that can be a part of the urban ecosystem. Rain garden and the green roofs create catchment area. Elements of the landscape design contribute the sustainability in the land.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (Individual Project) The project requires to design an urban hub that primarily accommodate shopping and transportation facilities together with additional fucntions, which will address the problems identified in individual analysis of the area. Students will be asked to question what an urban hub is today with regards to a citizen’s quotidian needs.

23

And all students will be search the question that how an urban hub should be connected to the rest of the city. The area is located in Buca/Turkey and Students will be indivudually redesign the area. The area is now called “Şirinyer Aktarma Merkezi” referring to the transportation exchange located in the area, north of the hippodrome.

ANALYSIS At the present “the center” is largely defined by traffic routes and a number of activities spread in the area, giving a sense of disarray and a lack of spatial definition. In contrast people come to the area for various activities such as shopping and recreation, and also due to the existence of certain social functions placed in the area by the municipality. The site is very close the old railway. Today the railway is not use for puclic transportation and it create boundary between the hippodrome and Şirinyer Park.

Our selected site is in Şirinyer, which functions as an urban hub in Buca, and houses a major retail store, a street market open twice a week, a bus transfer center near the Şirinyer Izban station, in addition to several other ameneties such as sports facilities, a wedding hall etc… After the analaysis, the need of the urban space was considered and increased green areas where people can breathe, perform various activities.

25

DESIGN The design is create FLEXIBLE SPACES which integrate several social and cultural activities. Creating a URBAN VOID with flexible uses is the need of any cities today. The mega structure aims that minimal intervention in the green areas. The design aims to increase the GREEN SPACE.

In the immediate vicinity of the are, unused suburban rails limit the access to the site. The site itself provides social and cultural activities which occur open spaces. The design aims that increase the number and the diversity of the SOCIAL-CULTURAL activities. The building supports the cultural and social activities with crane and containers. 26

DESIGN The entire architectural program designed on a single axis consedering pedestrian density and transportation networks. It was aimed to integrate the new city center with Izmir. The rails which are not used in the southern were renovated and combined with the suburban line of IZBAN. Containers modified according to the needs of the citizens are used to provide flexible spaces. The building structure design according to the crane and containers size and shape to create flexible spaces. In order to ensure the circulation of the containers in the area, the crane is integrated into the structure of the building. Containers can come to the site from anywhere in the world thanks to the activated train rails. The crane can carrys the containers which have different usage such as bazaar, cafe or workshop units.

27

Proposal creates free urban spaces at the ground level and the roof of the building. Ground level can be used for different activities (such as bazaar, concerts, circus shows, art activities, gathering area etc.) with the help of the containers. The proposal solves the parking problem of the Şirinyer area with the two level parking area on the lower ground.

FINAL MODEL

All drawings were edited for laser cutting machine. All parts of the model are made by laser cutting machine and assembled by hand.

The main volume design as a closed space culture center. The culture center contains several indoor activitie.
