A new future for pediatric heart care

meets the eye yields heartwarming results After an ultrasound in 2008, when doctors told Allen Meeks and Elizabeth Anderson there were problems with their unborn daughter’s heart, Allen’s first reaction was physical. “I just started walking backwards until I found a wall I could slide down,” he said. In October of that year, Jerzey was born with several life threatening congenital heart defects. She was flown via Sanford jet to Minnesota, and at just five-days-old had her first open heart surgery. Earlier this year, she and her family had to travel to Michigan for her fourth surgery—another 800 miles. While there’s no way to erase the fear parents experience when their child is critically ill, more than 1,500 guests of the 2012 Sanford Children’s Gala came together in August to help eliminate the stress of a child being taken so far from home to mend an ailing heart. The event raised nearly $1.6 million overall, more than $510,000 toward creation of the Sanford Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery Fund, a $3 million campaign to launch and support the new Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery program at Sanford Children’s. While the Pediatric Cardiology Program at the Castle of Care™, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of children with problems of the heart, lungs and blood vessels, is considered world-class, the need for heartrelated surgical services has reached a critical stage. In the past year alone, 129 families from the region traveled extensively

to ensure their children received this very specialized care, navigating unfamiliar facilities and working with medical staff they didn’t know. “For the past three-and-a-half years we put all our faith in our Sanford Team and our doctors here,” said Elizabeth. “It’s hard to walk into a new place, know absolutely nobody and say, ‘Here’s my daughter.’”

Additional stressors include loss of income, lack of a support system, and dealing with the risks and complications of traveling with a sick child. Being able to care for these families at Sanford has been a longtime goal of many within the medical team, including Dr. John Vander Woude, a cardiovascular surgeon at Sanford for 25 years, who died of cancer in July. He was instrumental in laying the foundation for the program. “Our dream—captured in large part as the legacy vision of Dr. John Vander Woude, and propelled by so many others—is to keep children in need of many of these life-saving, surgical heart remedies right here, close to home, in the Castle of

Care™,” said Kelby Krabbenhoft, CEO and President of Sanford Health, during the Gala. “And it’s set to become a reality.” That’s comforting news for Jessica and Jesse Hurkes of Watertown, whose son Caleb was born in April with aortic stenosis. In his short life he has already endured two heart catheterization ballooning procedures, and will require open heart surgery in the future. “To have that here in South Dakota would be incredible,” Jessica said. “It would be a huge blessing to be able to stay close to home. It would be a world changer.” In addition to helping change the world of pediatric heart patients and families by raising the initial support for the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery program, proceeds from the Sanford Children’s Gala will benefit the Sanford Children’s Fund, Sanford Project Fund, Sanford Children’s Health Research Center Fund and Sanford World Clinics Fund. In its thirteenth year, the event resulted in record funds raised. “We are continually humbled by the amount of support the Sanford Children’s Gala raises for these important children’s health related funds,” said Brian Mortenson, President of the Sanford Health Foundation. “The generosity of our sponsors and attendees, and their commitment to children in our region and around the world, is unsurpassed. Surprise Elements While the purpose of the 2012 Sanford Children’s Gala was a serious one—raising support for children’s health care—throughout the evening guests were treated to fun and surprises that were in keeping with the Gala theme: More Than Meets the Eye. Stilt walking vine characters, an aerialist, Mannequins in Motion and 3-D art imagery provided visual entertainment while guests registered and made their way into the event. As part of the program, America’s Got Talent finalist, Joe Castillo, used sand to create dramatic scenes that helped illustrate the stories of patients at Sanford Children’s. Later, Ethan Bortnick, an 11-year-old musical prodigy, who travels the country performing to raise money for children’s hospitals, used the piano to awe the audience. Expanded health care for Aberdeen area Residents in northeastern South Dakota gained expanded access to quality health care this summer with the opening of the new Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center. The $60 million facility opened in July. Connected to the existing Sanford Health Aberdeen Clinic, the state-of-the-art, full-service regional hospital will help meet the growing health care needs of the Aberdeen region. “As Aberdeen and surrounding communities continue to grow, so does the need for quality health care,” said Gordon Larson, CEO. “We saw a need for expanded services and improved facilities in this region so were eager to make the financial investment.” Anyone interested in making a philanthropic investment toward Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center can do so through the Sanford Health Foundation. Angels among us Having to stay in the hospital can be unsettling for patients and their families as they deal with diagnosis, treatment or surgery, and being away from home to name only a few stressors. While all Sanford Health employees and volunteers are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in a patient’s hospital experience, sometimes just one person can make all the difference. The Sanford Health Foundation is launching the Guardian Angel program which provides a unique way for patients and families to thank a Sanford doctor, nurse, staff member or volunteer who has made the hospital experience special.
