From the beginning of 2011 through April, supporters of events for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Cure Kids Cancer at Sanford Children’s helped raise more than $450,000 to help sick and injured children in this region. These events, both new and longstanding (see list below), and the funds they raise make a big difference for kids like 15-year-old Brandon Watterson, of Burbank, S.D., who’s battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

For other kids his age, days center around school, sports and hanging out with friends. But Brandon’s routine involves chemotherapy, blood transfusions and radiation treatments—and many trips to Sanford Children’s Castle of Care™. Some of the gifts made during radiothon help families like Brandon’s cover the cost of traveling to and from treatment.

Gifts to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Cure Kids Cancer at Sanford Children’s also help purchase cutting-edge equipment and provide important services, like Child Life and the Hospital School Program, for which patients are never charged. Child Life helps children cope with their diagnoses and adjust to staying in the hospital, while the Hospital School Program helps them keep up with homework and testing, so the transition back to school goes smoothly.

“The Child life Specialists were great,” said Candie McDonald, Brandon’s mother. “When Brandon was bored they found things for him to do.” She also appreciated that the Hospital School teacher was able to offer Brandon help when needed and provided a laptop computer for him to do his homework.

“We’re fortunate to have so many loyal supporters in communities throughout our region. Whether it’s helping families get to Sioux Falls for treatment, or providing these important programs, their gifts help sick and injured children in very tangible ways,” said Amy Sumner, Program Director for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at Sanford Children’s in Sioux Falls.

Sanford helps cancer patients

Improve their quality of life

After a patient endures the rigor of treatments that help them survive a devastating disease like cancer, preventing a recurrence becomes a top priority. In fact, it motivates many to incorporate positive life-style changes, such as exercise.

The latest research shows exercise can greatly improve quality of life for cancer survivors by reducing anxiety and depression, decreasing fatigue, improving weight management and Lymphatic flow, and increasing muscle strength and pain management.

Additional research studies proved that higher levels of physical activity not only reduced the risk of cancer recurrence but also influenced longer survival rates after a diagnosis.

According to Laurie Knutson, Director of Operations at Sanford Cancer Center’s Oncology Clinic, Sanford Health will soon be assisting cancer survivors and those currently receiving treatment who are interested in pursuing an

exercise program. “We have a team of qualified experts who will prescribe the appropriate exercise for cancer patients and survivors. The type of exercise, intensity and frequency will be chosen for each person’s specific needs,” she said. “In the coming months, this team will introduce specific exercise guidelines designed for newly diagnosed cancer patients, those currently receiving treatment and survivors.”

More than fifty Sanford medical professionals took an advanced training course to become experts in this field.

The training was made possible thanks to a grant from the Sanford Health Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund.

Forging Frontiers

Spirit for life The 17-year-old, who was born with spina bifida, a congenital birth defect that causes paralyzation, wasn’t always this confident. Today, he talks about his plans for college and his new car, a compact SUV that allows him mobility and independence. He credits his experiences at Spirit Camp with giving him an assurance he could do anything. “It changed my life in so many ways,” he said. “I don’t know what I would have done without it.”

An annual week-long camp run by Sanford Health, Spirit Camp brings together children from across the country who have spina bifida. In addition to offering activities like basketball, archery, paint ball and dancing, the camp provides children the opportunity to socialize with kids who are just like them. Spirit Camp is supported through philanthropy, including gifts to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at Sanford Children’s in Sioux Falls.

When Killian Fritz plays basketball, he’s generally right under the hoop, mixing it up.

The Windom (Minn.) High School senior is a fearless, intense player who loves the competition. “When we play, the wheels just don’t stay on the floor. They’re all over the place,” said Killian. “You just get in there and go for it.” foundation.sanfordhealth.org

Last fall, Killian completed an application for a grant, preparing all the paperwork and writing essays explaining how the lasting relationships and new experiences have changed his life. His proposal to the Robert and Helen Remick Foundation of Lakefield, Minn., earned the camp a $20,000 grant. That money will help run a summer program that can change the lives of kids who are used to being different, Killian said.

“The people at camp are like a second family to me,” he said.

“Being around other people who go through the same things I do has helped me become more confident in myself.”

As the only student in his high school who uses a wheelchair, Killian often feels a bit isolated from some of his classmates. Some students are uncomfortable around him and there are times when he wishes he could just fit in. “I sometimes feel like I have to explain the same things over and over again,” said Killian, who regularly e-mails and talks with his Spirit Camp friends. “For one week each summer, I’m some place where everybody’s the same.”

Welcome to the Foundation The Sanford Health Foundation welcomes Andy Kvernmo as Development Officer for Children’s Miracle Network. In this role, he is responsible for Sanford’s department fundraisers, assisting with radiothons and dance marathons, securing event sponsorships and working with various donors.

Andy graduated from Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., with a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing. He has previously worked in sales, marketing and event planning. Originally from Hendricks, Minn., he now resides in Sioux Falls with his wife, Jody, and their children, Caden and Ella, and spends his free time cooking, playing sports and watching his children grow up.

Brian J. Bonde, ACFRE, joined the Sanford Health Foundation in March as Vice President of Major Initiatives. In this role, he will establish and manage major gift funding for support of the Sanford Initiatives, primarily outside of the Dakotas. He will secure World Clinic funding partners and develop support for the Sanford FIT program and other emerging efforts. Previously, Brian was President of Children’s Care Hospital & School Foundation for 19 years after serving as Vice President for Development at Augustana College. He earned Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) distinction in 2004 from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and is one of only 85 fundraisers in the world who have achieved this exceptional level of certification. Brian, a native of Lake Preston and Flandreau, is a graduate of Augustana College. He is married to Kaija and they have four children. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, in Sioux Falls and Rochford, and producing touring musical productions for The Comfort Theatre Company in which he and his wife are partners.
