Carlson Endowment A Fargo couple’s philanthropic spirit and leadership will leave a lasting legacy on the future of health care in Fargo and beyond. Lisa and Philip Carlson, inspired by the care given to their loved ones, have made a $100,000 commitment to support patient care at the Roger Maris Cancer Center. Lisa, the Corporate Chief Financial Officer at Sanford Health, has been with the organization for twenty-five years. Her long history with the organization, together with many personal, family experiences motivated them to establish the Lisa and Philip Carlson Endowment for Breast Cancer, in memory of Grace C. Carlson, Philip’s mother. “We have had my dad, my mother, my step-father, Phil’s mother and Phil’s sisterin-law, who all received state-of-the-art cancer care in this community at our health care system,” she said. “From the point of diagnosis until they passed on, their care was wonderful. We wanted to make sure that this level of service goes on for generations, and is the best it can be.” Philip, a retired school teacher, said it’s all about giving back. “We have been blessed in life and felt we had a great opportunity here to do something special,” he said. “We are proud to support Sanford Health and we believe this fund will provide for the care and survival of future generations.” The earnings from the Carlson’s Endowment will be paid annually, forever, to support breast cancer patient care, research and technology at Sanford’s Roger Maris Cancer Center and in turn will benefit the system-wide efforts of Edith Sanford Breast Cancer, which seeks to unlock each woman’s genetic code to advance today’s prevention and treatments, and end breast cancer for future generations. The commitment by the Carlson’s is the largest ever by any employee to Sanford’s Fargo Foundation. “Every gift to our Building Tomorrow Today Campaign is a gift that touches life,” said Lonnie Pederson, vice president of the Sanford Health Foundation in Fargo. “But this gift from Lisa and Phil brings the definition of leadership to a whole new level. This gift really is an inspiration to all of us who work here at Sanford.”

Jack and Joe Gould
2012 Children’s Miracle Network Hospital Champions For months Sarah Gould’s pregnancy went well. But at 23 weeks, she knew something was wrong. An ultrasound revealed Twin-toTwin Transfusion Syndrome-a rare disorder in which identical twins share connected blood vessels, resulting in dangerously uneven blood flow. Sarah was able to undergo a laser procedure to disconnect the problematic vessels, however; it came with a risk of premature delivery. The twins were born 13 weeks early on Jan. 11, 2006. Joe weighed 2 pounds 11 ounces and endured respiratory distress. Jack weighed 2 pounds 1 ounce and suffered from severe kidney failure, blood infection and a heart defect. On Feb. 4, Jack’s condition took a grave turn. Because of severe kidney failure, he was expected to die within hours. Jeff had one request: hold the babies together. “It took half the NICU staff, but they made it work, tubes and all,” he said. “Jack and Joe hadn’t been together since birth.” That’s when something happened that still makes Jeff wonder…Joe reached over and touched Jack; within days Jack’s kidneys recovered and he was strong enough to undergo surgery to repair his heart defect. After 90 days, both boys went home from the NICU.

Cares for Kids Radiothon Breaks Records Again!!! In February, the 12th Annual Cares for Kids Radiothon broke records again by raising more than $158,000 during the 36-hour broadcast. Radio FargoMoorhead stations Bob 95.1, Y94 and Popster 104.7 shared the inspiring stories of children and their families who have benefited from the care and services provided by Sanford Children’s Hospital Fargo. Nurse Navigators – leading the journey A cancer diagnosis is shocking. Treatment options are complex. Coordinating appointments is overwhelming. How does one begin to navigate their journey? Roger Maris Cancer Center has the answer: a Cancer Nurse Navigator. Cancer Nurse Navigators, who specialize in specific types of cancer, work with patients and their teams of caregivers to provide guidance, education and support from the point of diagnosis to survivorship. Every patient’s cancer journey is unique and complex in its own way and the Nurse Navigators are available to help with scheduling for consultative and support services across several specialties and disciplines. The Roger Maris Cancer Center, with the support of philanthropy, was able to pioneer Cancer Nurse Navigation services in our region and will continue to expand the program to make the journey a little bit easier for those facing a cancer diagnosis.

Fargo Force show support for cancer surviviors
In February, the Fargo Force hockey team set aside their blue jerseys and donned purple to show their support for cancer survivors everywhere. The team collaborated with game sponsor, Jill Henning of State Farm, to raise more than $25,000 through a jersey auction and t-shirt sales. All proceeds supported the embrace Survivorship program at the Roger Maris Cancer Center.

The iPads® are also invaluable educational tools, providing Child Life Specialists with programs and visuals to help children understand their condition and treatment. Children have access to an endless supply of books, movies and games at their fingertips that can be easily adapted to any development stage, age group or interest. “iPads® are the best distraction and educational tool we’ve encountered,” said Wendy Iwerks, Child Life Specialist at Sanford Children’s Hospital Fargo. “Plus, we don’t have to bring an entire bag of tools with us - we can bring an iPad® and have everything we need.”
Sweet Miracles for the Kids Children’s Miracle Network supporters enjoyed hors ‘d oeuvres, wine tasting, live and silent auction and great entertainment at Sweet Miracles hosted by the Courtyard by Marriott in April. Denny Sanford earns international award for philanthropy In March, Denny Sanford received the 2012 Award for Outstanding Philanthropist from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). The organization’s top philanthropy honor was presented during AFP’s International Conference on Fundraising in Vancouver, BC. The award recognizes an individual with a proven record of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial support, demonstrates outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and whose generosity encourages others to take philanthropic leadership roles on a community, national and/or international level.
