More than 1,600 guests joined together August 20 to support the 12th annual Sanford Children’s Gala.

The event, which began as a fundraiser to support equipment needs in the Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and raised $20,000 its first year, has evolved into an event that supports several children’s initiatives and this year raised a record $1.1 million to support Sanford Children’s regionally, nationally and globally. It is attended by supporters and dignitaries from the region and the world.

This year’s theme, Forging Frontiers, brought Gala revelers to an earlier time in the history of the Dakota territories through use of media magic. The video program reminded guests how difficult life had been over the past century, especially for children, and that life was often cut short by scarlet fever, dysentery, infection and sometimes just plain hunger. One of three children under age five died, and there was little physicians could do to change these statistics.

Epidemics of polio, pneumonia and whooping cough attacked the young especially hard. People looked for heroes—and heroes of medicine arose. Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin stopped the rampage of polio. By the late 20th century, smallpox had been eradicated. Today, as different diseases threaten the lives and the quality of life of millions of children, Sanford researchers emerge as heroes in search of cures, while physicians and medical staff serve as handson heroes, treating children suffering from simple to complex diseases. And, as it turns out, the Sanford Children’s Gala had some heroes of its own.

Dr. John and Debby Vander Woude (pictured on front cover) heroically championed children by donating $150,000 to the Sanford Project to cure type 1 diabetes.

John joined Sanford Health in 1987 as a cardiovascular surgeon, while Debby, a Children’s Gala steering committee member since 2007, led this year’s Gala as co-chair. In recognition of the Vander Woude’s cumulative giving to children, the Storybook Room at Sanford Children’s Hospital will be named in their honor.

“Debby and I had a long discussion regarding the direction of our gift. As a cardiovascular surgeon, I see every day the debilitating effects of the pervasive disease; it has become one of the greatest health concerns of our time,” Dr. Vander Woude said. “We realize that research funding is extremely difficult to secure; yet, it is this basic science research that eventually will be the pathway for finding a cure for diabetes. That’s why we directed our gift to the Sanford Project.”

Dr. Beth Lapka (pictured left), an emergency room physician with Sanford Health since 2001 and the youngest Chief of Emergency Medicine in the history of Sanford, committed $150,000 to the Sanford Children’s Fund during the event. In recognition of her cumulative giving to Sanford Children’s, a family center at Sanford Children’s Hospital is named in her honor. She is passionate about the mission of Sanford Children’s. “I’ve always believed we should have a children’s hospital,” Dr. Lapka said. “But now that I have family in the area—two nieces and a nephew about to be born—I’ve realized how important it is that we have Sanford Children’s Hospital and all the pediatric specialists available to provide the very best healthcare for all children, close to home.”

Through their generous leadership, these donors inspired hundreds of additional gifts from Gala guests that evening. “John, Debby and Beth started something incredible that night by stepping forward with those tremendous gifts,” said Brian Mortenson, President of the Sanford Health Foundation. “They motivated Gala guests to give from their own hearts for this very important cause of children’s healthcare and research. We are so grateful to them and the corporate and raffle sponsors who support this event and Sanford Children’s every year.”

Gala funds reach far to help children

Funds raised through the 2011 Sanford Children’s Gala will help benefit children locally—and globally—through the following funds.

Sanford Children’s Fund This fund provides on-going, perpetual support for all the activities, programs and services of Sanford Children’s, ensuring generations of children and families throughout the region will always have the care they need, close to home.

Sanford Project Fund This fund helps Sanford Project researchers in their pursuit of the elusive but attainable cure for type 1 diabetes.

Sanford Children’s Health Research Fund This fund fuels the world-class pediatric research network and state-of-the-art technology of the Sanford Children’s Health Research Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Sanford Children’s World Clinics Fund This fund supports development of a network of domestic and international pediatric primary care clinics to ensure children in underserved areas have access to quality health care.

Donors help expectant Thanks to the Sanford Health Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund donors, a unique program will be expanded as an option for expectant parents.

Sanford’s CenteringPregnancy® is group prenatal care and is the first of its kind in South Dakota. The goal of the program is to bring women with similar due dates together to build a community of support and education. During ten, twohour sessions these women meet with their care provider—who is a Sanford obstetrician or midwife— and their group, to participate in prenatal care. Check-ups, support and education take place all in one trip.

“You really get a chance to know your doctor or midwife, and their

nurse,” said Jen Bannwarth, Centering Pregnancy® participant. “This is a fabulous program. The incorporation of education into the normal checkup is a wonderfully effective way to prepare for the first baby, and would be a great refresher for baby number two, and on, as well.”

National studies, and local results, show that women who choose this approach to prenatal care have decreased risk of preterm labor, increased rate of healthy birth weight and higher participation in breast feeding, all resulting in healthier babies.

The program was started in January, 2009, by Sanford midwives. The results were overwhelmingly positive, which inspired many of Sanford’s OBGYN physicians to join the program

Children’s Miracle Network

donations provide important equipment Two new pieces of equipment are helping improve care in the new Pediatric Urology department at Sanford Children’s, and it’s all thanks to Children’s Miracle Network donors.

Urodynamics® and Uroflow®, both manufactured by Laborie, are improving the diagnostics and treatment of children with urologic issues. Urodynamics helps evaluate the health and function of bladders in children with neurogenic bladders, which are often the result of spinal injuries or neurologic birth defects like spina bifida. Uroflow measures the voiding ability of patients with urinary incontinence, while an accompanying biofeedback component helps treat urinary dysfunction by strengthening muscles used in urinary voiding.

According to Todd Jacobsen, Director of Sanford Children’s Specialty Clinic, the new equipment is used frequently. “Before adding Dr. DeMarco, a pediatric urologist, to our clinic in 2010, we didn’t realize the magnitude of the need for this

equipment,” he said. “There are many kids with urinary issues and these tools are life changing for them.”

Together, the pieces cost more than $70,000, and Jacobsen says Children’s Miracle Network donations covered those expenses. “Because of CMN donors, we were able to acquire the equipment earlier than we expected, and kids are getting the very best care because of it.”
