GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. All exhibits, except poultry, may be entered Saturday, September 7th from 1:00 - 6:00 pm and Sunday, September 8th from 1:00 - 5:00pm.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SANFORD LIONS CLUB The SANFORD LIONS CLUB was organized in Lions Club Fair Grounds” property.

1935 with twenty charter members, who are now all deceased, and was sponsored by the Raleigh Lions The SANFORD LIONS CLUB has sponsored Club. the following clubs, some from which other clubs have been sponsored: Pittsboro 11/11/37, Apex Around 1938, the SANFORD LIONS CLUB 11/18/37, Biscoe 7/15/38, Siler City 4/28/38, Aberstarted to sponsor a Lee County Agricultural Fair. deen 9/9/38, Broadway 8/15/50, Coats 2/28/72 Shortly after World War II, some of the far-sighted and Western Harnett 1998. In 2005 a Day Time members of the club arranged for the SANFORD club was formed. A Leo Club was formed for high LIONS CLUB to buy land on Colon Road. Over school age youth of Lee County in 2007. the years, additional land was purchased and many buildings were erected on what is now “Sanford “We Ser ve” is the slogan for all Lions Clubs

throughout the world. The Sanford Lions Club is an active group that serves the citizens of Lee County and the surrounding areas. While a focus on servicing the blind and hearing impaired is first priority, the Lions Club also serves through various other projects including Vision Screening; Aids for the visual and hearing impaired; Scholarships; Facility Use; Charitable Grants; Special Recreational Opportunities; Boys and Girls Home Support; Christmas Cheer.

2013 fair proves ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet’ I

f you think you’ve seen it all, the 76 th annual award winning Lee Regional Fair just might prove you wrong. There’ll be more to see and do at the 2013 fair than ever before, and it’s guaranteed to bring smiles, laughs and thrills to all ages of your family and add to those treasured memories of fairs of yesteryear. The Lee Regional Fair opens on Tuesday, Sept.

10, with official ceremonies at 5 p.m. and runs through Sunday afternoon, Sept. 15.

The Sanford Lions Club, the N.C. Cooperative Extension, and the many business sponsors, vendors and volunteers look forward to another outstanding agricultural fair that will again showcase the diversity of life throughout Lee, Harnett, Chatham, and Moore counties.

Tickets at the gate are $7 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and only $5 on Thursday and Sunday. Admission Sunday is free for senior citizens 65 and older and for everyone donating five cans of food each. Children under 36 inches tall are admitted free every day. On opening day Tuesday, Sept. 10, school age children K-12 get in free from 4 to 7 p.m. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. each day except Tuesday 4 p.m. and noon on Saturday and Sunday.

Ride bracelets at the fair will be $20 covering all rides, or you can pay by the ride. On Thursday, ride bracelets will be reduced to $17. There is also a presale of ride bracelets at $16 if purchased by Sept. 6—a savings of $4. Pre-sales are available at Piggly Wiggly in Sanford and Broadway, La Cumplidora Grocery Store on Horner Blvd., and in Lee County Schools (check your local school). While the fair officially begins Sept. 10, there is much work scheduled before, including interviews with young ladies in the various pageants on Sunday, Sept.

1, and the setting up of educational booths Sept. 5-7.

The Tobacco Looping Contest begins Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. at the tobacco barn. Also on Sept. 7, educa-

tional booths can be set up from 9 a.m. to noon, while from 1-6 p.m. other exhibits will be accepted at the Agricultural and Commercial Exhibit Halls. On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, exhibits will be accepted and set up, and livestock and game birds will be accepted at the Arena Barn. Also that afternoon, pageant rehearsals are scheduled on the Arena Stage starting at 2 p.m. with Miss Lee Regional Fair contestants followed by the five other age groups.

Each day of the fair features a special sponsor starting with Wilkinson Cadillac-Chevrolet-Buick-GMC on Sept. 10. The ribbon-cutting ceremonies will be accompanied by the Lee Regional Fair Parade featuring the Lee County High School Band. There will be youth and adult tractor and truck driving competitions, pageants for the Petite Miss, Tiny Miss, Little Miss and Young Miss contestants. And from the Amphitheater Stage will be entertainment with Hypnotist Mike Bishop, U Got Talent, and demonstrations by the Black Belt Leadership Academy. In addition, each day there will be more than 30 other exciting and fun-filled attractions plus educational exhibits. And don’t miss the Antique Village with its new General Store, Blacksmith Shop, Tobacco Barn, Sawmill, Farm Machinery and Victory Garden.

Wednesday, Sept. 11, is The Sanford Herald night as sponsors of the beauty pageants. The highlight of the evening will be the Junior Miss pageant at 7:15 p.m. and the Miss Lee Regional Fair pageant at 8 p.m.

Younger pageant winners will also be recognized on the Arena Stage. In addition to all other fair attractions, there will be entertainment and the Meat Goat Show in the Arena Barn.

Thursday, Sept. 12, will be Sanford Honda Night. A very important fair event every year takes place in the morning at 9 a.m., as hundreds of pre-school children descend on the fairgrounds for a story time sponsored by the Coalition for Families — every child receives a free book. They also get free rides on the Mid-way

attractions. Another big event comes at 7 p.m. with the annual Livestock Show in the Arena Barn followed by the Champion Broiler and Livestock Auction. There will also be an ATV Mud Bog at 7 p.m., the annual Chili Cook-off plus entertainment.

Friday, Sept. 13, is Sanford Toyota Night at the fair featuring the exciting Demolition Derby at 7 p.m., more entertainment and Big Juicy of Lizard Lick. The Singing for Food winners will be featured on the Arena Stage.

Saturday, Sept 14, is Moen’s Day at the fair as the large Sanford manufacturer will again hold its annual picnic and family day for their employees and families at the Lions Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Lee Regional Fair. This is a special year, as Moen and the community celebrate the company’s 40 th year in Lee County, which will be recognized in ceremonies. Other events scheduled include Tobacco Tying Contest at noon, Lee County 4-H Rabbit Show also at noon, Diaper Derby at 1 p.m., 4-H Dog Show at 1:30 p.m., and at 2 p.m. a truck and tractor pull, among many other attractions.

The last day of the Lee Regional Fair Sunday, Sept.

15, will be UNC Dance Team and Area Cheerleading Squads Day plus United Way Day with admission free with five cans of food each. Senior citizens enter free.

Otherwise, admission is $5. The UNC Dance Team and area cheerleading squads will put on exhibitions on the Arena Stage beginning at 2 p.m. Also at that time will be a Halter Horse Show on the Lion Field. The fairgrounds will close at 7 p.m.

SPECIAL EVENTS Coordinated by North Carolina Cooperative Extension Lee County Center TRACTOR DRIVING COMPETITION: This event will take place Tuesday from 4:30 to 9:00 pm at the Lion Field. Youth and Adult competitions are offered.

The purpose of this event is to demonstrate safe and efficient operation of farm tractors and equipment.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Lee County, Lee County High School FFA and Southern Lee High School FFA coordinate this event.

TRUCK DRIVING COMPETITION: This Event will be held Tuesday from 4:30 to 9:00 pm at the ball Lion Field. Youth and Adult competitions are offered.

Hosted by North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Lee County, Lee Senior High School FFA and Southern Lee High School FFA, the purpose of this event is to promote interest, awareness and safe operation of pickup trucks by FFA members and the public. All contestants must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

LIVESTOCK SHOW AND CHAMPION AUCTION: The Lee County Livestock Producers and the Sanford Lions Club will sponsor a Livestock Show Thursday evening at 7:00 pm at the Arena Barn. Junior Beef Heifers and Steers, Feeder Calves and Beef Cattle will be judged according to the rules and regulations for that particular division. There will be a Beginner, Junior, Junior Intermediate, Senior, and Adult Showmanship Contest. Each breed exhibited will be awarded with Grand Champion, Reserve Champion or a ribbon. Steers and broilers that receive champion status during the livestock and broiler shows will be auctioned. The Champion Auction of steers and broilers will be held Thursday evening after the Livestock Show.

6D / Lee Regional Fair stop on the Farm Credit Circuit. Youth from sixteen neighboring counties are invited to participate. Goats will be weighed in starting at 4:00pm on Wednesday and the show will begin at 7:00pm. There will be two sets of confirmation classes, breeding does and wethers. Wether classes are broken down into light, medium and heavy weight market classes. Confirmation classes focus on the overall quality of the animal based on the breed standard. In addition to the confirmation classes, there will be showmanship classes as well. In showmanship the individual is judged on their ability to control and present their goat to bring out its best characteristics. Showmanship classes are divided up into four age groups of youth and one adult class.

DIAPER DERBY: The Early Childhood classes at Lee County High School will host the Diaper Derby. The Derby is open to participants 10 months or younger and not walking. Registration begins at 12:30 pm with the race beginning at 1:00pm on Saturday. Only one individual will be admitted into the fair free of charge with a child participating in this event. First, second and third place prizes will be presented by Lee County Extension and Community Association, Lee County Partnership for Children and the Sanford Lions Club.

The Lions Club will present winning ribbons with all participants receiving a ribbon of participation. For more information contact North Carolina Cooperative Extension at 775-5624.

4-H DOG SHOW: Lee County 4-H Youth Council will host a dog show in the Arena Barn on Saturday. Registration begins at 1:30 pm with the show beginning at 2:00 pm. There is a limit of one dog per person.

Owners must stay with their dogs at all times and keep them on a leash. Owner must also provide proof of the dog’s current rabies vaccination at the admission gate.

Only one individual will be admitted into the fair free of charge with the dog. Dogs must be removed from fair grounds after the show.

This will take place on Saturday in the amphitheater from 6:006:45 pm. The group is made up of Lee County students and led by Myrna Rodriguez. Magetsi 4-H Club has performed at numerous venues throughout North Carolina including the annual “La Fiesta Del Pueblo” in Raleigh. They are excited about performing at the Lee Regional Fair and representing the local 4-H program.

Looping was an art back then…the string had to be tight enough to hold the tobacco onto the sticks while it was curing and not so tight as to cut the leaves so they would fall off during curing. Tobacco is looped to tobacco sticks, and then hung in the barn to cure. Once the barn is loaded with sticks of tobacco, a wood fire will cure it for about a week.

Three-person teams will compete to see who can string a stick of tobacco the fastest and the best. Prize money and ribbons are at stake! Please see Tobacco Looping Contest rules for further details. Sponsored by Crop Production Services.

Antique farm machinery dating back to the early part of this century will be on display and in operation. The displays include: tractors from 1920s through 1960s; small one-cylinder engines from 1910s through 1930s; a Red River Special Thresher from the 1920s. The thresher will actually be threshing wheat.

Lee Regional Fair Cook-Off Guidelines General Rules • Cook-Off events are for amateurs only…no professionals.

• There are no categories for age groups for the Cake Bake-Off, Chili Cook-Off or Ice Cream Churn-Off. All contestants entering will compete against one another. There will be age divisions in the Mayor’s Choice Cookie Bake-Off. • Only one entry per participant per event.

• Exhibitor must be present to win.

• If any rules are not followed, contestant will be disqualified.

Entering the Cook-Off: • All entries must be registered and in place prior to the judging.

• After the judging begins, no other entries will be accepted.

• B ring entries to the Agricultural Exhibit Hall for registration.

• E ntries can only be received on specified day and time listed under each Cook-Off event.

• There is no entry fee.

• C ontestant with a Cook-Off entry will be admitted free to the Fair. Others must pay gate admission.

Recipes • R ecipes are to be submitted with each entry and will become the property of the sponsors and may be used for the purpose of publicity, advertising, publishing, promotion, etc.

• C redit will be given to the person originating the recipe.

• C omplete recipe for all events must be typed or clearly printed on an 8½ X 11 inch sheet of white paper. List all ingredients, exact measurement, all preparation steps and number of servings. Any recipe with raw eggs in the finished product will be disqualified. Recipe must be brought with entry on day of contest.

• Type or write name, address, email and telephone number on the reverse side of recipe in the upper right corner. Do not write exhibitor’s information on the front of the recipe.

• If recipe is incomplete, entry will be disqualified.

Judging • Community and regional judges will be used for each Cook-Off. Judges’ decision is final.

8D / Lee Regional Fair 5. 120 VAC outlets are located on the back wall approximately 19 inches from the floor at random intervals.

A few booths will not have an outlet within the booth itself, but will share an outlet with an adjoining booth.

This adjoining outlet will be within 1’ of the partition and may be reached by running an extension cord under the partition.

6. Displays must not extend over the side partitions or into the aisle.

7. Displays may be fastened to the booth by mounting tape (masking, duct and double-sided tape will NOT hold all week), 1/4-inch staples, or small brads. No large nails or screws are permitted and nothing should be attached to the ceiling without first contacting the Exhibit Hall Manager.

8. All tools, supplies, tables, chairs, stepladders or any other equipment needed to construct the booth must be provided by the exhibitor.

9. Each group assigned a display booth must check-in with the Exhibit Hall Manager prior to set-up and provide the name and phone number of a person to contact in case of a problem.

10. Each display booth must remain intact in place for the duration of the fair.

11. Each display booth must be cleaned up at the time of teardown and all materials and debris must be removed from the premises. All tape, staples and other fasteners must be removed from the partitions and from the back wall.

Lee County 4-H will host a dog show at the Arena Barn on Saturday, September 15th at 2:00 p.m. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. Registration is limited to one dog per person. Owner must stay with dog at all times and all dogs must be on a leash. Owners must provide proof of their dog’s current rabies vaccination at the Admission Gate. Dogs will only be allowed in the Livestock Barn.

After the show, dogs must be returned to vehicles or home. Dogs will not be allowed to roam fairgrounds with owner, regardless of a leash. Only one individual will be admitted into the fair free of charge with the dog.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR YOUTH BROILER SHOW 1. Open to exhibitors under 19 years old on the day of the show.

2. Birds are donated by Pilgrims.

3. Premiums provided by Perdue, Mountaire, Pilgrims and Chatham County Farm Bureau.

4. Exhibitors can only enter three birds. All birds must be on the grounds between 3:00pm-5:00pm.

Rejected broilers will be put in a separate pen.

5. Birds need to be weighed at time of entry. Weight of each bird must be at lease Two and a half (2.5) lbs. Underweight birds will not be able to compete in the show.

6.

All birds will go to market. NO EXCEPTIONS. 7. Birds must be in barn and weighed on Tuesday, September 10th between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

8. Judging will take place on Tuesday, September 10th at 6:00 pm at the Arena Barn.

9. Grand and Reserve Champion birds will be auctioned off after the Livestock Show on Thursday September 12, 2012.

10. Grand and Reserve Champion Pens of Three must stay for display until Sunday afternoon.

11. Overall Top Ten placements will receive premiums from the Five County Area Poultry Industry Fund.

Amounts of premiums will be announced.

Looping tobacco is the art of stringing tobacco on a stick to be placed in the tobacco barn for curing. Three person teams will compete in looping tobacco.

Tying tobacco is the art of bundling 3 or 4 leaves together by banding the top stems to form a “hand”.

The “hands” are then placed on tobacco baskets to be auctioned.

Individuals will compete for the best “three hands” of tobacco.
