UNPARALLELED ARTISTIC COMMUNITY / LEGENDARY STUDIO ENVIRONMENT / ARTIST-DRIVEN EXPERIENCES DRAWING SFAI’s Public Education program offers areas of study that span the breadth of contemporary art— including traditional techniques in drawing, painting, photography, film, printmaking, and sculpture, as well as radical experiences, off-kilter journeys, collaborative public projects, and educational experiments. Join SFAI’s diverse community of artists and scholars. Our noncredit evening and weekend courses offer flexibility for you to pursue your aspirations. No matter your experience level, there’s a unique class to suit your skills and interests.

Drawing on still life’s history as a vehicle for symbolism, allegory, and social and political critique, we will investigate its potential as a vital contemporary genre, drawing scenes from a range of rich tableaux of plant, animal, and manufactured materials.

Spend six Saturday mornings drawing en plein air in a variety of unexpected locations around the Bay Area including the Sutro Baths ruin, Presidio Batteries, or Mountain View Cemetery. Class will conclude with an informal exhibition at SFAI.

Contemplate the 4th dimension in this painting course focused on how to convey duration, immediacy, and the element of time in your work as you complete a series of short exercises and an individual final painting.

Working primarily from the live model, you will record the human form using intense cropping to make thoughtful compositional selections while creating narratives based on portions of the body.
