Cover Letter

Respected Sir/Madam,

My name is Sangay Thinley. I am originally from Bhutan a small country sandwiched the two giants China and India. I recently graduated from the School of Architecture and Design from Assumption University in Thailand. At the moment I am still here in Bangkok just having completed my thesis exhibition. I am dynamic and very motivated. I work well both alone and in groups and have good social, communication and presentation skills. Even though i graduated in 2016, i have multiple work experiences in multiple firms both in Thailand and Bhutan. I took part in different projects starting from research, to design, to construction drawing productions and building renovations. I work well under pressure and always challenge myself in difficult times. My attention to detail and excellent problem –solving skills ensure that every project I work on is executed accurately and to the highest standard. I am very comfortable working as a part of a team but also have the ability to take an authoritative role when the situation arises. I am also highly computer literate and have advance knowledge in my software skills which include Microsoft Word, Excel, Power-point, Publisher, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, AutoCAD, Sketch up, 3Dmax, V-ray and Lumion. I am a fast learner and my strongest strengths would be problem solving and my will to never give up. My verbal communication skills and my positive attitude make me an effective communicator with everyone I have worked with. If given the opportunity I am excited about the chance of working with you all. My portfolio clearly demonstrates my interest in architectural design and the way in which my skills and experiences are compatible with this role. I am confident that my qualification and skills could make significant contributions to your organization. I feel that since I am from a different country I can offer different perspectives to different projects and come up with different solutions, at the same time learn a great deal from professionals as yourselves. I look forward to the opportunity of discussing an employment opportunity with you further and how I will significantly be able to contribute to the ongoing success of your firm. Thank you for your time.

Yours Sincerely, Sangay Thinley.

BHUTAN MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Bhutan now facing the full force of globalization, it is important to move forward carefully with a sustainable culture and an environment. It is vital to consider defining our vernacular architecture with the rest of the world finding new ways to blend with modern technologies and ideas so that our history and culture will not fade away. Hence the Bhutan Museum of Modern Art tries to fulfill that goal by creating a fusion architecture, trying to bridge the gap between local and global tradition and at the same time promote art in the country. The project explores the ideas of art versus architecture, ornamentation in 21st century Bhutan and importance of modern art for the youths. The project will act as a platform for the young and old to explore the world of modern art and to express their individual thoughts and ideas.

Location : THIMPHU,BHUTAN Site Area : 10,700 SQ.M Bldg Area : 9,900 area SQ.M.

SITE ANLYSIS

Bhutan is a small country in the eastern fringe of the Himalayas. The total area of the country is 38,394sq.km.The country has a total population of 770,000. The country has 20 Dzongkhags (states) and these Dzongkhags are further divided into 205 Gewogs or districts. For my project I will be focusing more on the capital city Thimphu. The project for this site is located in located in the capital city Thimphu. Thimphu, the capital city is located on the western part of the country. It is the most populated Dzongkhag and it is considered as one of the fastest developing cities in the country. The population in the city is estimated to be 100,000 out of the 700,000 people in the whole country. It is also the home to large number of schools, government buildings and commercial buildings.

The project for this site is located in a prime location. Is located in the mature city of the capital, this means the site has easy accessibility to transportation and is close to other major centers such as public institutions, government instituations, commercial and residentials areas. The key factor is the location of the Youth Center which is right next to the site. This provides an opportunity for the museum to be integrated with the youth center. Another important factor is the beautiful landscape itself. One of the ideas for the project is have the design blend in with the natural landscape rather than imposing it. By partially blending in with the slope the project creates a friendly atmosphere allowing people to move into the site diferent parts of the site using the existing pathways.

TRUTH OF MATERIALS

The clean look of the Museum mainly serves several ideas and functions. First the museum is to embody the idea of a blank canvas on which any type of art can be displayed without the building opposing any type of distractions to the viewers. This mainly tackles the on going debate of the battle between ‘art and architecture’ in most of the present day art museums. In Bhutan the existing museums are in itself a work of art with master craftsmen crafting history, stories and floral decorations. One can say Bhutanese Architecture reminds us of the ‘Art Nouveau’ period. Hence in the long run the Bhutanese architecture becomes a distraction for the actual art which is being displayed. This way the clean façade of the Bhutan museum of modern art serves its contents rather than competing with them.

AXONOMETRIC DIAGRAM The Bhutan museum of modern art acts as a medium between the new and the old and provides a platform for the young generations who are enthusiastic about modern and contemporary art. The project deals with the ideas of reducing the ornamentations which is found on the buildings everywhere in Bhutan. By adopting the ideas of modern architecture and implementing them with regards to the traditional buildings in Bhutan, it creates a unique type of architecture which stands out from the rest. In contrast of the highly decorated and ornamented buildings found in Bhutan, the museum tries to step away from the generalization and adopts a clean cut faรงade.

SECTIONAL MODELS

SECTIONAL MODEL OF THE CENTRAL ARTIUM The central glass atrium functions as the main entrance to the museum space on the lower floors. The atrium also allows natural light to flow into the space below and acts as a gathering space and defines the circulation space. This design steps away from the conventional Bhutanese architecture where the entrance of the main structure and the circulation will lead the users to move upwards, whereas in this case the central atrium allows the users to gradually move to the lower floors providing the users an overwiew of the exhibits located below.

THE ESSENCE The urban planning revolved around creating a new neighbour in the Khlong Toei region. The project drove the idea of a high end entertainment area while preserving the local fresh market. The project consists of projects such as hotels, shopping mall, theaters and condominiums. This project is based on a high end living life style. The site is right next to a river so the design puts forward the idea of a luxurious town house living experience for a high rise building. The idea is acheived but allocating premium units close to the river. This allows the users to have a town house living experience with their own parking areas and private gardens and pools in their backyard. At the same time the units located above will enjoy the views of the cityscape with their own sense of privacy.

21st CENTURY SCHOOL The 21st century school of Assumption focuses on whats important for the students in terms of learning in this day and age. The school considers the fact that different individuals or students have different ways of learning and prefers different types of learning spaces and atmospheres. The project will provide different types of spaces of learning interms of interactive spaces, intimate spaces and more conventional spaces like class rooms. The project stands aware of the factors which effect how one accumulates knowledge in this day and age and takes every bit of the factors such as new media, internet and other means of information into the consideration of learning.

34

35

SITE ANALYSIS

The site is located right next to Assumption University. This factor provides the project the opportunity to integrate the spaces with the existing University to enhance the learning spaces of both the campus and to share a relationship which beniďŹ ts both the school and University without invading each others privacy.

THE CURVE This project was approached with the mind set of creating the perfect balance and harmoney between the three major programs, the commercial space, the office space and the residential space. The commercial spaces is located on the base ensuring a welcoming environment for the local community and the shoppers. This program provides spaces which can be used and shared by the local people and the residents. The site being located right next to the river, the form and the welcoming space of the building brings in people from the streets towards the river where they can enjoy the view and the food located by the river. The office space is located above the comercial space to ensure privacy and a separate circulation for the people working there. Yet the office is placed in such a way that the people can come down to the commercial spaces to take a breather or two. Finally the residential area is located above the office equiped with a separate lobby and circulation to ensure the upmost privacy. All the rooms located in the tower have great views of the river and cityscape. With abundant spaces in the flats and the rooms it truly reflects a luxurious style of living.

DUPLEX HOUSE IN BHUTAN - by DRUK HERITAGE CONSULTANCY This project was completed during my internship in Bhutan while working with the Druk Heritage Consultancy. The project is a duplex house for a famaily in Bhutan. I took part in the early stages of design up till the final stage. I was responsible for the graphic presentation and the final production of the construction drawings for the project. The project considers the idea of a comfortable living environment which can house a family of more than five members. It considers the natural factors such as wind and sun to push the design so that the house can be a comfortable place to be in all around the four seasons of Bhutan.
