By contrasting particular properites of places effect people's motions when they traverse space. Create rough along smooth; Create slow along fast; Create calm along lound and crowded. Create dramatic moemnts when 3 contrasts meet, organizing 3 layers of movement. Different motions provoke different experiences, perspectives and definitions of one place.
The mountain biking path is fast, rough and response to topograph. The walking is slow, rough, more flexible in elevation changing. The cycling path is fast, smooth and also digged into ground for secure consideration.

SITE RESEARCH The Current Activities & The Historical Activities
Kevin Lynch mentioned that users understood their surroundings in consistent and predictable ways, forming mental maps with five elements: Paths The streets, sidewalks, trails, and other channels in which people travel. Nodes The center of the human activities. Landmarks Focal points, intersections or location. Readily identifiable objects which serve as external reference points; Districts Edges Perceived boundaries such as walls, buildings, and shorelines.

Nodes as the center of the generator of events . We will further divided it into different state like node connecting points, site entrances, stay spots to analyze the relationship between people and space in the field of state.
Districts and edge research mainly analysis the contemproray land use of the area that surrounding the Shichahai lake and the opening level to tourists and residents.
We attempted to analysis the demands of residents and tourists through the classification of the existing site activities, and compared with the evolvement of local activities in history.
By layering the evolvement of land use and local custom of Shichahai lake in different dynasty in Chinese history, we understood the historical context of this area and establish connections between contemproray residents, tourists and history.

SITE RESEARCH The Sprit of Regions
These four mind diagram refer to the combinationof the site research and the image of Shichahai Lake from residents in each region. We realized the conflict between residents and tourists is the major problem. The development of the tourism become dominate the public space in Shichahai Lake.
DESIGN ANALYSIS Design Area
The lakefront of Shichahai lake is an important public water space in Beijing. We selected the east bank of the south part of the Shichahai Lake and half of the south bank the north part of the Shichahai Lake, because these two area have relatively more intense conflicts between residents and tourists, more residential activities and more lakefront space.

Water Management Strategy
Xihai Lake
The source of the water of Shichahai Lake origins in Miyu Reservoir and flow into the lake by passing through the Kuning Lake in the Summer Palace, north moat. In this case, the water level is stable in a year. The water management strategies collect rainwater on rainy days, accelerate water recycle in the river through several gates. The permeable pavement can receive more rainwater and replenish groundwater. The wetlands were used to purify the polluted water.
