PROLOGUE

The Chinese character 域 (YU) is a combination of a character ‘earth’ and character ‘nation’ alongside. It refers to the nation’s border or territory. This initial definition has evolved into multiple meanings. However these meanings are varied, they can be correlated to limitations or boundaries. In Chinese vocabulary, the character YU describes the definition of both land and space, eternity and seconds, reality and void, behavior and thoughts. Also, in mathematical and biological region, YU represents the minimum unit of dividing study subject. Generally, YU is the basic unit for people’s cognition of the world. In addition, YU provides tools for self understanding. In traditional Chinese culture, the Confucians advocate a moral freedom of ‘doing at will without breaking rules’ . It interprets a supreme realm of life in pursing a limit combination of outer conditions and inner consciousness within the boundaries of laws and moral standards. As people look into this philosophy, they are seeking the limitation of harmony within different YU, boarders for all kinds of field. During this outwards exploration, their speculations and approaches often touch the boundary and bounce back, bringing a deeper understanding of themselves. As for architecture design, the power of YU also exists. Faced with block pattern, historical context, public feelings, social issues and other complex conditions, designers may find numerous boundaries from outside. But as long as one can distribute all these individual elements through formal approach in a coherent manner, these individuals will coexist harmoniously, creating a strong and contagious sense of place. This portfolio discusses the concept of YU and it includes some of my architectural attempts with the same attitudes. For instance, projects such as Max Station Mini Rome and Fuzimiao Theater deal with the boundary of historical context and newly built public service facilities; projects like Ribbon Forest reveals our exploration into the boundary of structural composition. In different projects I was trying to touch the boundary of my cognition of architecture. It interprets a mild and modest gesture towards YU.

ROME

Academic Project 2016 Fall Joint Studio of SEU ,Sapienza University of Rome, Tianjing University, Chongqing Univeristy Instructor: Peng Tang, Yuan Zhu Site: Termini Station, piazza dei Cinquecento, Rome Team: Shuang Liang, Wen Zhang Role in Team:Preliminary Typological Research in Rome,Conceptual Design, Architectural Design,Technical Drawings, Digital Model and Rendering, Representation

For about 200 years Termini Station has played an important role in Roman urban life. It serves hundreds of thousands of passengers per day, transporting them from Rome to corners on European continent. However, the ancient Aurelian wall and surrounding blocks were cut off by the endless railways, seperating city texture into two parts. In this studio we were inspired by the detached urban textures and life on the two sides of Termini Station, triggering a solution called Stitching Rome. In this system we tried to improve citizen's life and renovate sleepy blocks by several methods. A parking and commercial complex was designed upon railways, dealing with limited parking spaces in streets as well as crowded passengers in Termini Station. Several historical buildings were renovated into museums or galleries, with a tunnel under railways connecting them together. We also set up a circular pavement to re-connect ancient Aurelian Wall so that tourists and nearby residents are able to ramble on them.

FRAGMENTED ROME First built in 1867 by Salvatore Bianchi, Termini Station changed the texture of Rome forever. At the cost of separating central Rome into two sides , it linked Rome to the wider continent of Europe. It has been the main public transport hub in Rome for 150 years. The station is located in piazza dei Cinquecento, in the heart of the city. After inauguration in 1955, Termini station has a total surface area 225,000 ㎥ , frequented by approximately 480,000 persons per day, over 150 million per year. Apart from basic functions as transporting center, Termini Station serves as a tourists center, shopping mall, modern art gallery, food court and even concert hall. It has offered adequate options for travelers as well as residents nearby, with no difficulty in spending all day long in one giant complex. It has become part of Rome's urban life for 200 years, and residents are accustomed to this giant. Beside this monster, we try to find some urban spaces in need of improvement, making them more friendly to citizens in an architectural way.

The complex is the starting point as well as breakthrough of the entire urban design system, and one of the strongest experiments. My field trip in Rome often reminded me of my hometown Xian City. They have witnessed giant change during livelong history, and each generated different spirits, which is the most precious in urban design procedures.

BETWEEN THE STREETS

Academic Project 2016 Summer Architecture Studio Instructor: Yu Chen Site: Confucius Temple, Nanjing, China Building Area:7230 ㎥ Individual Work

Nanjing Confucius Temple not only provides the consecrating space for Confucius, but also plays a significant role in ancient Chinese cultural. It is located in the center of the old Nanjing city, surrounded by many historic lanes and streets. For hundreds of years, people lived, worked and communicated with each other in the neighborhoods, making it a charming and attractive district. However, with the development of modern society, the commercial space squeezes residential areas. Consequently the interpersonal interaction is reduced, and the lively atmosphere no longer exists. Inspired by the famous Chinese painting "The Riverside Scene of Qingming Festival," the program sought to recreate the traditional street space in modern urban blocks and rekindle the lively and harmonious neighborhood atmosphere. According to the modeling and classification analysis of street space in "The Riverside Scenery of Qingming Road", I summarize several typical spaces, and put the theater, community center and other functions needed by modern life organically. The combination of architecture volume and neighborhood context has formed an communicating space that encourages people to walk, stay and interact with each other.

Street Space Analysis of Qingming River Map

The traditional drawing 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' was painted by Zhang Zeduan, an artist in Northern Song Dynasty. The five-meter-long scroll illustrates the city image and public life in Northern Song capital vividly. It fully reflects the spatial characteristics of traditional Chinese alleys: continuous and tortuous streets; appropriate spatial scales and proportions; a series spatial nodes for public activities, etc. Linear Space

It is my favourite to spend weekends at the community library.

After the show we can take a rest at cafe.

Do you like traditional Pingtan Drama at the small plaza?

It is great view to appreciate Qinhuai River from up here.

We can stay here all day long playing and chatting with neighbours.

"Urban life will be boring without the happiest places to meet people and the quiet, independent spaces that stand alone." Ashihara Yoshinobu,<Aesthetics of Streets> This program is an answer to the boundary between architecture and urban blocks. It is architects' responsibility to design in urban and public spaces, and burrow life in the streets and buildings in informal spaces. 23

Professional Project(Under Construction) Atlier Liu Yuyang Architects Instructor: Congbao Wu Site: West Bund, Shanghai, China Building Area:1000 ㎡ Team: Shuang Liang, Yaping Wu, Zhuoran Chen Role in Team: Conceptual Design, Architectural Design,Technical Drawings, Model and Rendering

During my three-month internship at ALYA, I was fortunate enough to be involved in the whole process of an architecture design project. The project is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by early 2018. The venue is located in the southeast of Shanghai, where the Dingpu River flows into the West Bank of the Huangpu River. There were many old granaries that will now be transformed into an innovation and technology industrial park. ALYA is responsible for the design and construction of the first building in campus, a tourist service center. During the process, my conceptual scheme “Seed Forest” was adopted. Starting from the functional transformation of the original building, the program opened the dark, dry silo storing foodstuffs to the environment, introducing sunlight and air, allowing grain to germinate and grow like seeds. It also symbolizes the vigorous development of innovative science and technology enterprises. In just three months, I experienced conceptual design, program design, model making, material analysis, etc. And I was responsible for the project construction drawing, involved in the report conference for Party A. I’m looking forward to the day my first project was completed.

04 IN THE DEPTHS OF DEPTHLESS

Exhibition Project Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture 2017

Team: Shuang Liang,Xin Zhou,Yufei Song,Yiyang Wang,Yuan Zhang,Yu Song Role in Team: Conceptual Design, Model and Visual Effect

The project serves as the VR Pavilion for the UABB 2017 at Shenzhen, with the theme of presenting the virtual headquarters of Bilibili, a popular social video website in China. As a new media born under the digital age, WeChat, Taobao, Zhihu, Bilibili, Douban ... can be understood as one city that is concerned with “self” and also as the most shrouded form, most omnipresent large institutions of history. What happens in these media has gradually turned into meaningless collages or closed self-confrontations in a narrow space. Instead, the language tools that were originally expressed became meaningless expressions. The resulting social effect is more of a non-judgmental, worthless, irrational incident. In Baudrillard’s description of the computer screen, he compares the flat, yet infinite, interface to a superficial depth-the simultaneous simulations and denials of the real world. The real boundaries of the computer screen are limited only by the sensory experience of the human eye - the difference between reality and virtuality. In this flat abyss, the most dynamic and uncontrollable force in the modern Chinese cyber culture is inhabited by this large and complex institution. We try to use VR technology to simulate this kind of existence, so that our reflections on the mass information carnival can be delivered to more people through visual modeling.

33

34

Interpretation of Chinese Modern Cyberculture One of the hallmarks of the digital age is the formation of a rigid and methodological interactive network. And this network can dispel those originally used to distinguish between true and false boundaries, it is hard to tell what is real, and what is virtual. After all the barriers have collapsed, a foreign environment is formed, one that is neither real nor imaginary but an virtual world infinitely close to reality.

“Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.” —— Oscar Wilde

Academic Project 2016 Fall Architecture Studio Instructor: Kai Gong Site: Jiankang Road, Zhenjiang, China Team: Shuang Liang, Yiyang Wang Role in Team:Preliminary Structural Research in Rome,Conceptual Design, Architectural Design,Technical Drawings, Modeling and Rendering, Final Representation

For a long time, people's cognition of the structural system has been constantly changing. From the initial basic needs of sheltering and survival, it gradually evolved into formal desire and religious representatives, and the structure itself is constantly innovating beyond self-actualization. This process is similar to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. As a high-rise building with complex functions, National Fitness Center calls for diversified structural needs and rich spatial variations, posing new challenges to structural design and spatial relations. We start from the change of the role of the pillar in the structural system, and studied the effect of various deformations (such as twisting, offsetting, zooming out, etc.) of the column on the strength of the structural system through model analysis and force analysis. According to the research result, we invented a twisting-column structure to meet the high-rise building anti-lateral force and a variety of functions of the fitness center. This innovative structural system provides a new answer to the development of high-rise buildings and multi-function building complexes.
