Maximizing natural daylight is the most essential thing for the first floor since all the windows are located on the west. Sustainable polycarbonate panels in the bedroom let some warm daylight into the kitchen on the east while it helps the current tenant with hearing lose see what is going on in the living romm and kitchen in case of danger, for instance, fire.

ADA Acc e s si ble

The first floor requires ADA accessible. All the kitchen appliances are placed in ADA reach ranges, which is between 15 to 48, and they are easy to operate. Also the sink and cooktop has empty space below the countertop so that wheelchair users have no difficulties when they are in the kitchen.

The second floor is also an affordable housing unit. It is bigger than the first floor and currently rented by a low-income family consisting of parents and two children; one with a wheelchair. The main considerations for the second floor are ADA accessibility, safety, and acoustical issues. The concept for the unit is a pendant nest, which is woven with grasses and plant fibers. The pendant nest is suspended from a branch, built in the middle of the tree, just like the 2nd floor unit.

On the third floor, the landlord and two of her family members are living in. Maria Mariotto is the owner of the building and the main tenant of the home because not only that she lives there, but also she works at the home office with two other employees. The concept of the third floor is a platform nest consisting of straws, small pieces of branches, and leaves. It is built on the top of the tree, just like Maria, the landlord living on the highest level of the building, take care of the whole condominium.

The logo was based on the idea of incorporating the farm-to-table sys-

epicarp

tem, the most significant feature of the restaurant, into the design concept “layers”. One of the fresh fruits representing California the most is an avocado. It has layers, consisting of a seed, endocarp, and epicarp, while performing the freshness and organic local ingredients. The restaurant itself is an outermost layer of the space that protects inner layers, so it is named “epicarp.”

Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Sang Hee Son began to study fine art since she was little. She has won the prizes in many competitions of watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting. While Sang Hee was studying fine art and 2D design, she got interested in designing three dimensional spaces. Moving to San Francisco to study abroad, she decided to attend Academy of Art University to incorporate her fine art skills into 3wD spaces like stage design and interior design. This portfolio represents a selection of academic works realized over the past three years.
