13 Wood Street, San Francisco, Laurel Heights, CA 94118

Site Analysis Mariotto Residence

The Mariotto family condominium is 3-story building loacated in Laurel Heights district in San Francisco, owned by Mariotto family since 1955. The first and second floor units are rented

through San Francisco’s Section 8 and Rental Assitance Program for low income tenant, and on the third floor, the landlord of the building and her family are living in.

10

Design concept;

Cozy Nest

Affordable Housing Units

The concept “cozy nest is inspired from the bird nest that protects the eggs and little baby birds from the dangers in the outside world. For the baby birds, the nest is the most safe and warmest place to take a rest. All the people in the world fight and survive from the difficulties and issues, and home should be the most comfortable and safe place for them. The color palette of the con-

cept is very warm and cozy, which helps the tenants to take a good rest at home after work. Colors are adopted from natural elements and ingredients of bird nests, such as grass, feather, stones, and branches. Natural and eco-friendly green materials used in the interior spaces create comfortable mood, while it is very sustainable and energy efficient.

11

12

First floor Design concept;

Scrape Nest Affordable Housing Unit

The first floor is a smallest unit of Mariotto’s condominium with a great outdoor area. It is registered in SF section 8 program for low income residents, and currently rented by a tenant with hearing loss.

The concept for the unit is a scrape nest, which is built on the ground with small stones, feathers, vegetations, and shell fragments. The eggs are surrounded and protected by natural elements.

15

Circulation

Every space is connected to another and it is very flexible and intuitive wayfinding. There are at least two doors or openings, and the second exit is very easy to find so that the user of the space can easily escape from the space in case of danger.

Sustainable Design For eco-friendly design, each material choices were made based on its sustainability. The Engineered hardwood flooring from Armstrong provides better indoor air quality and it can be repurposed into other wood products. The off white paint with eggshell finish on the walls from Benjamin Moore is zero-VOC while it is durable and allergy friendly. Kitchen appliances such as the refrigerator and oven are Energy Star rated, which means they are very energy efficient.

ADA Accessibility The first floor requires ADA accessible. All the kitchen appliances are placed in ADA reach ranges, which is between 15 to 48, and they are easy to operate. Also the sink and cooktop has empty space below the countertop so that wheelchair users have no difficulties when they are in the kitchen.

Energy Efficiency Maximizing natural daylight is the most essential thing for the first floor in terms of layout since all the windows are located on the west. Sustainable and acoustic multiwall polycarbonate panels in the bedroom let some warm daylight into the kitchen on the east while it helps the current tenant with hearing lose see what is going on in the living romm and kitchen in case of danger, for instance, fire.

Second Floor Design concept;

Pendant Nest Affordable Housing Unit

The second floor is also an affordable housing unit. It is bigger than the first floor and currently rented by a low-income family consisting of parents and two children; one with a wheelchair. The main considerations are ADA accessibil-

ity, safety, and acoustical issues. The concept for the unit is a pendant nest, which is woven with grasses and plant fibers. The pendant nest is suspended from a branch, built in the middle of the tree, just like the 2nd floor unit.

23

Open Floor Plan

206

By leaving least interior walls in the public spaces such as the living room, dining room, kitchen, children’s activity room, and the outdoor patio with 5’-0” wide hallways, it gives free movements for wheelchair users and kids. It also provides the parents open views which helps them to keep their eyes on the kids for the safety.

Third floor Design concept;

Platform Nest Landlord’s home and office

On the third floor, the landlord and two of her family members are living in. Maria Mariotto is the owner of the building and the main tenant of the home because not only that she lives there, but also she works at the home office with two other employees.

The concept of the third floor is a platform nest consisting of straws, small pieces of branches, and leaves. It is built on the top of the tree, just like Maria, the landlord living on the highest level of the building, take care of the whole condominium.

31

Universal Design 309

For future remodeling when Maria no longer needs home office, the office can be used as a bedroom or guestroom. When Simona, her daughter, leaves home after growing up, the walls between two bedrooms on the west can be removed to make them into one bigger bedroom.

307

306

304 305

Privacy for Tenants

1

Although all the family members are close to the employees, they still need privacy at home. The third floor is both home and work to Maria, but not to Frank and Simona. To separate “home” and “office” for Frank and Simona, where Maria and employees’ spaces are located on the west. Maria’s private space is adjacent to the office for convenience 32

Master Bathroom Taking a bath after long hour working is one of the best things to wrap a tough day. Since Maria, the landlord, has her business running at home, the first thing is a private space where she can relax while it is adjacent to the office. The master bedroom is located on the east with large windows letting natural daylights in, and the master bathroom with a walk-in closet is located in the light well patio with a soaking tub. The master bath-

room is facing to the kitchen with floorto-ceiling windows. To provide a good air ventilation with a privacy, operable skylight is installed right above the soaking bathtub so Maria can enjoy a starry night view with fresh air with privacy.

Site Analysis

School of Interior Architecture Design The building is located at 460 Townsend Street, San Francisco, California and currently used as a campus of Academy of Art University. The property type of the building is industrial/warehouse,

and it was used as an office building until Academy of Art University bought the building. It has a typical industrial building looking exterior and interior, which it doesn’t encourage students and faculties.

Metamorphosis

School of Interior Architecture Design To become a butterfly, metamorphosis is necessary. If the caterpillar never went through this process of change, it would never achieve its great destiny and become its most glorious self. Education is just like metamorpho-

sis. All the students and learners experience failure and depression while learning process and have hard time going through . However, they become a butterfly, which is another word of success, when they overcome the tough process.

customized furniture

Objective

two different ways to use

The customized furniture piece is designed for Epicarp, the farm-to-table bistro & bar, located at Mission Bay district, San Francisco. Epicarp provides cooking classes to local residences and customers at the demo kitchen of the restaurant and the demo kitchen is used as a private event space such as wedding reception, wine/beer tasting party, or birthday party

1

when there is no cooking class. Since the event space is only 440 SF and the storage is 40 SF, the client needs a multifunctional table for more flexibility in a space and faster transformability. The multifunctional table can be used two differnt ways; cooking table for cooking classes and dining table for private events.

Biography Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Sang Hee Son began to study fine art since she was little. She has won the prizes in many competitions of watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. While Sang Hee was studying fine art, she got interested in designing 3 dimensional spaces. Moving to San Francisco to study abroad, she decided to attend Academy of Art University to incorporate her fine art skills into 3D spaces like stage design and interior design. This portfolio represents a selection of academic works realized over the past two years.
