from the CHAIR The crisp air has a way of making me feel invigorated in the fall, and at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, that invigoration has found its way into our education programming. Beginning this month, children are invited to participate in the beginnings of a youth orchestra, taught by CSU-Pueblo students enrolled in the Music Teacher Education program. Pueblo Youth Orchestra is collaborative effort to get instruments and music education into the hands of Pueblo children who may not otherwise have the opportunity. With a donation of 22 instruments from Colorado Public Radio, and Marck Time Music’s generous support of additional, value-priced rentals and maintenance, students can participate in a year-long program at the Arts Center learning clarinet, percussion, trombone, violin or other instrument of their choice. Through the generous donations of sponsors, tuition assistance is also available for those in need to help encourage their participation and foster a love for music. If you know of a young, budding musician (4th grade and older), direct their family to the Arts Center for more information about joining this incredible program. If they have an interest is in visual arts, have them check out the Artrageous Artists Club on Fridays, and if they have always wanted to perform on stage, the Magic Carpet Players are the perfect group to join. Those who can’t stop moving to the beat of music will find a great learning experience through the Rainbow Connection Dance Company, or our School of Dance. Some of these programs are available for the very young (ages 3-4), while the bulk of them are geared for 1st-12th grades. And don’t forget – classes for adults are always offered. Weaving, pottery, jewelry-making and wine appreciation courses are all led by experts in their field. Check out the Arts Center’s education offerings this fall at http://sdc-arts.org/education.html.

Toying with Science is a fast-paced, varied and dynamic program! Garry Krinsky’s original, upbeat songs offer additional information on fulcrums, levers and basic mechanics - including the ability to find the center of gravity is demonstrated when he balances multiple ladders, topped with a giant beach umbrella on his chin at the same time. Garry brings a number of sciencebased toys to life with motion, music, humor and insight. MASKS of MEXICO From the Collection of Charles Trent The use of masks in Mexico dates from 3000 BC. Masks were used by priests to summon the power of deities and in the sacrifices of pre-Hispanic Mexico. Spanish contact masks were used to educate neophytes on the Christian faith, and “shock and awe” the indigenous people through dramatic presentations such as the Battle of the Moors and the Christians. As the two cultures fused, the imprint of each was recorded in masks as well as in the dances they have been used for. The role of the mask has been a dynamic one representing the ever-changing belief systems unique to peoples and geographic regions through time.

OPENS OCT 26, 2013 HOAG GALLERY
Grace Wever, Mixed Media Collage Art
The inspiration for this series of works was a riveting verse,
Doug Bayer, Glass Works
“I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory within.” The early works I created based on this verse portray the New Jerusalem with its protective walls, and the gates that allow joyful entrance. These works also portray the darkness and terrors that reign outside the walls. After completing the first few pieces, my thoughts expanded, and I began to interpret Walls and Gates within the context of human existence. I found myself thinking about those held hostage by unhealthy relationships, about those physically imprisoned, those trapped in bodies that were physically damaged. And in the end, these works became the mirrors of my thoughts. – Grace Wever
