Sordid & Sacred The Beggars in Rembrandt’s Etchings JUNE 3 - SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 WHITE GALLERY
FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2017 | 6 PM 45TH ANNIVERSARY GALA Celebrate opening night of Sordid & Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandts’ Etchings with cocktails & entertainment on the paseo, the exhibition opening, and dinner.
Rembrandt Van Rijn, widely recognized as the greatest practitioner of the etching technique in the history of art, created a body of work unparalleled in richness and beauty. Rembrandt repeatedly chose beggars as the subject for his etchings. Says Gary Schwartz of Dover Publications, “…Many of Rembrandt’s etchings are of biblical scenes with biblical figures portrayed as beggars.”
GENE KLOSS: GIFTS FROM JOHN ARMSTRONG MAY 27 - OCTOBER 8, 2017 KING GALLERY The newest acquisitions of Gene Kloss prints donated by the late John Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong’s fervent appreciation for Kloss’ artwork led him to amass one of the largest bodies of her work in the world. The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center is fortunate to be the beneficiary of John Armstrong’s generous gifts of this collection throughout the years. He was a Pueblo resident, world traveler and respected teacher in local schools. John Armstrong died in 2015.
THE HISTORIC ART OF BRASS RUBBING JUNE 3 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 HOAG GALLERY Brass rubbing was originally a largely British pastime for reproducing on paper monumental brasses – commemorative brass plaques found in churches, usually originally on the floor, from between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. The concept of recording textures of things is generally called making a rubbing.

BILLY SCHENCK:
THE MYTH OF THE WEST
OCTOBER 7, 2017 – JANUARY 15, 2018, WHITE GALLERY Billy Schenck is a contemporary artist with work in over 40 museum collections and corporate collections that include Sony, IBM, Saatchi and Saatchi, American Airlines and others. His subject matter spans genres from western landscape to cowboy pop. He has been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. Early in his career, Schenck became known for utilizing cinematic imagery, reproduced in a flattened, reductivist style, where colors are displayed side-by-side rather than blended or shadowed. His art incorporates techniques from PhotoRealism and Pop Art to both celebrate and poke fun of classic western images. His work is characterized by hot colors, surreal juxtapositions and patterning which explore the collisions between wilderness and civilization, the individual and community, nature and culture, freedom and restriction. Billy Schenck is a World Champion Ranch Sorting winner and the proprietor of the Double Standard Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico, his home for the past two decades.
FRANCES DODD:
CONTEMPORARY IMPRESSIONIST PAINTINGS
SEPTEMBER 23-NOVEMBER 12, 2017 HOAG GALLERY Fran Dodd’s passion is color. Fran looks for small fragments of beauty in the landscape - those moments that take your breath away in awe and wonder. Interpreting the landscape from her own viewpoint, she hopes to engage the viewer to stop and experience a little of the excitement and joy felt while painting. Fran lives in Pueblo West with her husband, photographer Allan McConnell. Fall Finery by Fran Dodd
ALLAN MCCONNELL:
PHOTOGRAPHS
SEPTEMBER 23-NOVEMBER 12, 2017 REGIONAL GALLERY Allan McConnell is a local photographer who received a formal photographic education in photojournalism from the University of Wyoming in 1962. He continued his arts education in various formats and has published two photo books. He has shown his work in many solo and group exhibitions and was the Artist In Residence for the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in April, 2010. Allan lives in Pueblo West with his wife, artist Fran Dodd. One Hard Land by Allan McConnell
