CLASS CONFIRMATION: To receive a class confirmation, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope, or register online. Otherwise, you will only be notified if we CANNOT process your registration. ENROLLMENT: Where possible, class enrollment limitations are included in course descriptions. The Arts Center reserves the right to cancel classes which do not meet minimum enrollment. Registered students in classes cancelled due to less than minimum enrollment may transfer to another class or be reimbursed for the full tuition. HOLIDAY/CANCELLATIONS: Classes will not meet on major holidays, unless students are notified otherwise. Make-up classes are the responsibility of the instructor and student. Please, no walk-ins. SCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of scholarships are available for up to half tuition costs. Scholarship forms must be completed and returned to the Arts Center one week prior to the beginning of class. Forms are available at the Welcome Center and online. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR As a native of Colorado, Richard Martinez had the opportunity to dance on a team that performed as an opening act for Reba McEntire in Denver. Soon afterward, he relocated to California where he competed in Ballroom, Country, West Coast Swing, and Salsa, as well as performed with various formation dance groups and a line dance team. During this time, Martinez received several awards and accolades. Amongst them was “Overall Champion” for taking first place in all six dances required at a country competition held locally, a “Most Upcoming Dancer” recognition award in Lake Tahoe, and a 1st and 3rd place in the World Salsa and Hustle “Jack and Jill” competition held in Las Vegas, NV.

BEGINNERS POTTERY WHEEL He eventually moved back to Colorado with a desire to provide the community with an opportunity to have fun learning to dance and is now the owner of Pueblo Dance Company which provides social dance lessons locally. In 2011, Richard’s company began collaborating with the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center to work as an instructor for their social dance program. He has worked with students aged eight to eighty in the various programs offered by the Arts Center, and has volunteered as contributing choreographer for the play Guys and Dolls performed on the Arts Center stage.

PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTION

Sangre de Cristo School of Dance adheres to standards set by the National Association of School of Dance. SANGRE DE CRISTO BALLET is a community-based, pre-professional youth company consisting of students, community members, and guests. The company offers original performances in classical, contemporary, and modern dance. The student criteria for becoming a Sangre de Cristo Ballet member are:

1. Achieve ballet level four or higher 2. Enroll in and actively attend all classes offered at that particular level 3. Be willing to attend all scheduled rehearsals 4. Prioritize Sangre de Cristo Ballet’s activities over other extracurricular engagements Once a student agrees to and fulfills all of the above criteria, the opportunity is given to join the ranks of Sangre de Cristo Ballet based on the student’s commitment and work ethic. The Sangre de Cristo Ballet guest and community member criteria are based on production needs.

Early Education classes at the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance use a syllabus based on the basic elements of dance and the National Core Standards for dance education. Students learn different kinds of coordination and begin to understand use of space, timing, and energy with ageappropriate instruction for each class level.

Ages 3 - 7 Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays | 9 - 10 am For the convenience of our parents/ students, we offer combined early education classes throughout the week. These classes emphasize a combination of concepts explored in the Early Education classes listed above based on the ages of enrolled students.

Ages 3 & 4 Saturdays | 9 -10 am Our youngest class level, Creative Movement places emphasis on connecting ideas with movement, creative expression, and musicality.

DANCE EXPLORATION

Ages 6 & 7 Saturdays | 11 am, - 12 pm Our Intro to Dance class is the most advanced Early Education class we offer for our younger students. It is designed to prepare students for entering the school division class of Pre-Ballet. This class focuses on body and rhythm awareness, pattern/ pathway reproduction, and classroom etiquette.

Wednesdays | 5:15-6:30 pm | SDDZ11 The Sangre de Cristo Dancerz is a resident company of the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center composed of differently-abled individuals. This program culminates in the traditional spring production of “Hot Fudge Sunday” which showcases the Dancerz’ own choreography to musical favorites. School division classes within the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance range begin at age 7 with Pre-Ballet and extend through to level 3. Level 4 begins our pre-professional training. Students in Ballet 2 and above have the option to study several other styles of dance. Class types can include modern, jazz, character, and freestyle. ADULT/TEEN MODERN

RECREATION DIVISION

Ages 13 and Up Fridays | 7-8 pm This class is for adults and teens with little or no modern dance training. Graham, Limon, and Bartenieff Fundamentals are referenced as students learn floor work, weight shifting, and traveling, as well as practice dynamic, expressive interpretations of movement. Emphasis is placed on alignment, balance, strength, and flexibility to enhance proper dance technique.

Beginning in Fall 2017, we are happy to announce that we are offering recreational division classes. These classes are designed for children, teenagers, and adults that are trying dance for the first time or are seeking a dance experience without the time commitment of the formal training within our school division. These are generally considered beginner level classes where introductory concepts of dance will be explored while surrounded by peers of the same age and level of experience.

Ages 13-17 Tuesdays | 7-8 pm This class is specialized for teens who have wanted to try ballet or dance in general, but did not begin training at a young age. Curriculum will focus on the basic concepts of ballet at the barre, but will include more free movement and center work than Ballet 1.

BALLET 1 Ages 8 and Up Mondays 4-5 pm Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 pm Emphasis on alignment, placement, selfcontrol, and positions. This level marks the beginning of the formal training in the art of ballet. Students begin practicing their turnout, begin formal barre work (plies, tendus, jetes, and ronde de jambe in their most basic forms), and begin to find stability and balance in the center of the room.

TEEN JAZZ Ages 13-17 Thursdays | 5-6 pm Teens with no prior dance experience will be exposed to various styles of jazz with an emphasis on learning proper dance technique and terminology from a highly acclaimed and award-winning teacher. Class curriculum is based on introductory ballet techniques layered with basic jazz movement and includes a warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-thefloor progressions, and combinations.

Coordination between movements is introduced. The study of pirouettes and pointe begins (as permitted by instructor).

Fridays | 4-5 pm This class has a prerequisite. Students are expected to have reached at least Level 2 in ballet in order to take this class. Emphasis is placed on alignment, balance, strength, and flexibility to enhance proper dance technique. JAZZ 1 BALLET 3-4 Ages 12 and Up Tuesdays | 4-6 pm The purpose of this class is to expand classical vocabulary for those moving into the higher combined ballet levels, as well as strengthen pointe work and technical skills.

Further development of combinations in adagio, allegro, and exercises en pointe, with the use of both classical and contemporary music. Ages 14 and Up Wednesdays | 4-6 pm This class will focus on the technique of classical pas de deux as well as explore the weight-sharing and lifting techniques of contemporary dance partnering. In addition to learning the techniques needed to support, turn, and lift a partner; students will also learn the skills to carefully coordinate the shape and timing of their movement with their partner.

CLASSICAL VARIATIONS

14 and Up Thursdays | 6-7 pm This class has a prerequisite. Students are expected to have reached at least Ballet Level 5 or have consent of the instructor to take this class. This class provides a study of classical and contemporary solo variations from famous ballets. Students are introduced to and gain an appreciation for the technical difficulty of solos as well as an opportunity to express their individual style and artistic ability.

12 and Up Thursdays | 7-8 pm This intermediate level jazz class focuses on learning and improving proper dance techniques like body isolations, performance quality, and developing intricate rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz to help develop a wellrounded dancer. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movement and includes a proper warmup, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations.

Most importantly, character dance requires the SODE19 student to think about the cultural context of the dance and the responsibility of how to best honor that through their work.

Ages 12 and Up Mondays | 5-6 pm Advanced jazz students will be expected to take risks and explore their own unique style. Combinations become increasingly more complex and intricate. Mastery of technique, speed of the movements, musicality, and flexibility is expected within this class.

PATHWAYS IN THE ARTS

Fridays | 4-5 pm Students will explore the possibilities of careers in dance and the arts. They will learn about developing their brand as an artist, YOGA FOR DANCERS SODE20 applying to college programs, securing a job, and learn the legal and financial aspects Ages 11 and Up of the business of dance. In this class we Tuesdays | 4-5 pm emphasize the importance of building a life in the arts, not just a living. This class requires consent of the instructor. Yoga for Dancers is designed to help dancers develop mental and emotional skills that will assist them in challenging life situations throughout their dance careers and beyond. Focus is placed on breathing techniques and balanced muscle usage.
