FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Members,
Jim Richerson with Dr. Harry Spell
As the summer is quickly drawing to a close I reflect on just how much is ALWAYS happening at our magnificent Arts Center. I was pleased to see brand-new events like a school readiness week in the Buell Children’s Museum serving more than 1,000 visitors, and grew fond of events like Festival Fridays which have been part of the Arts Center for decades. The Arts Center is now open on most Monday holidays, including Labor Day and Columbus Day, in order to reach guests on their rare days off from school and work. Think of us if you have out-oftown visitors and want to show them the treasures of Southern Colorado.
The exciting and gracious bequest of Charles A. and Jeanette Sunshine tima k a M e Gilchrist by Jo White’s southwestern art collection, valued at $1.2M, further deepens the incredible resources housed at the Arts Center for our community. I particularly enjoy sharing the Arts Center’s accomplishments with community groups such as Rotary Club 43, Pueblo City Council, and Pueblo County Commissioners. If you are part of a group that would enjoy hearing about the far-reaching benefits the Arts Center provides to the community and our future plans, please do contact me and I would be happy to make a presentation. Within the past few months, I have reunited with old friends like Dr. Harry and Karly Spell, whose pioneering process allows us to bring Michelangelo’s fragile models to the Arts Center for public display in the form of bronze casts. I ask you to join me in welcoming the newest addition to our team, Dieter Henrich, in his role as Controller. Dieter has experience in non-profit finance and development and has fit in with our team seamlessly. I’ve also said farewell to esteemed colleagues such as former board chair Dick Cline and John Armstrong. Special people such as these will long be remembered for their contributions to uplifting the arts in Southern Colorado. In fact, some of John Armstrong’s Gene Kloss collection will be traveling to La Veta this month for display at the SPACe Gallery. This year, the Arts Center will be combining the annual volunteer luncheon and donor dinner events into a single night meant to celebrate all benefactors, whether they contribute financially or, equally valuable, their time. My hat goes off to Dorothy O’Dowd and Lita Martinez who are co-chairing this wonderful event where we get to thank those people who keep our center thriving. I look forward in the years ahead to building on the strong legacy the Arts Center has established as we embark on creating far-reaching plans for our 50th Anniversary coming in 2022 (only 6 short years from now)! I anticipate speaking with members, generous donors, and students who have been influenced in many ways as we shape the future of the Arts Center, Southern Colorado and beyond. A huge THANK YOU for your MEMBERSHIP and support!
Jim Richerson, Executive Director

Few artists have been more exalted than the life and works of Michelangelo Buonarroti. His reputation as a sculptor, painter, draftsman and architect has not only stood the test of time, but his artwork represents some of the world’s most recognizable masterpieces. Without taking a trip to Italy, most of our experience with Michelangelo’s artistic genius is through books. Now, thanks to an incredible partnership between the Muséo Buonaroti and the Harry and Karly Spell Foundation, museums may now exhibit this truly unique collection. Michelangelo originally acquired the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, Italy in 1508, but actually never lived there. However, he left this monumental building to his nephew. The grand house was later converted into a museum, the Museo Casa Buonarroti, and dedicated to the artist by his great nephew, Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger. This museum holds some of his earliest sculptures, as well as what’s known as original bozzetti. Bozzetti are essentially working models for sculptures. They were used to work out issues in the sculpting process or to give patrons or assistants a tangible impression of the final product. By their very nature, they are extremely fragile and have for hundreds of years been kept under a tight lock and key at the museum in Florence. What they represent to the art world are exact replicas of some of the greatest sculptures that have ever existed. A life-changing collaboration of art and technology is now making possible something that has never been attempted before. Casting a bronze from an old clay model (the bozzetti) is simply not possible without destroying it. For the first time, by utilizing laser scanning and rapid prototyping technology, the pieces can be duplicated without risking the models. A limited edition of bronzes are being produced using a traditional five-step lost wax process with two distinct goals. The first goal is to provide a source of income for the Italian museum to allow them to continue to preserve Michelangelo’s precious art for the future. Secondly, the Michelangelo Project allows others to participate in the experience of his art and acquire a work designed by one of the greatest cultures of Western civilization. Towards the end of his life, Michelangelo went essentially blind and was forced to continue his work relying on his tactile senses. Now, art lovers will be able to not only see his creations in a book or from a distance behind a roped-off museum exhibit, but actually touch a bronzed edition. Excerpt from “The Michelangelo Project” by Laura Jackson This exhibition is sponsored by the Dante Alighieri Society, Don & Helen Banner, Joe & Kris Bower, Gregory & Haydee Kort, Jim & Bernadette Warren, Mike & Fran Hurtado, Barbara Fortino, Kim & Kim Barickman, Rudy & Bernadette Padula, Elaine & Bill Nicoll, Rita Gersick, Michael Occhiato, Temple Hoyle Buell Foundation, Koncilja & Koncilja, Edward & Neta DeRose, Dr. Harry & Karly Spell, Ralph & Jan Williams, Carl & Kay Bartecchi, Ashok & Smitta Patel, and Classical KCME 88.7-FM.

M A H LO N T. & M AY L A N W H I T E G A L L E RY O C TO B E R 1 0 , 2 0 1 5 – J A N U A RY 1 7 , 2 0 1 6 “The beautiful is always strange.” - Baudelaire
By Elizabeth Szabo
The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center’s exhibition Beautiful Grotesque includes works by international, national and regional artists specifically invited to participate because of their unique and diverse understandings of the fundamental human condition. The concept of the grotesque in art is a centuries-long tradition, which is currently being re-invented by contemporary artists in fantastical, unpredictable, and sometimes humorous ways. Working with timeless concepts, they explore humanity’s eternal search for a resolution to the fear of death and the anxiety of the transient nature of earthly pleasures. Their approach to this subject prompts the viewer to consider mortality, the sublime, and the absurdity of life. Throughout history artists such as Francisco Goya, Salvador Dali, and Francis Bacon have explored fears. In his famous painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, the 16th-century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch doesn’t shy from his own imaginative depiction of hell in all its glorious horror. He exhorts the viewer to consider the inevitability of death and repent, lest they too end up in the tortuous pits for all eternity. It is not surprising that the grotesque remains so popular in today’s culture. It allows us to safely explore our fears of nightmarish other-worldly concepts and creatures as well as express the daily horrors of life. The ideals of the grotesque and the beautiful never stray far from popular culture; this is where they have been born and nurtured. Look no further than any Tim Burton or Quentin Tarantino movie; read Alice in Wonderland or even Dr. Seuss, look to Beowulf or the aesthetic movements of Mannerism and Surrealism or the Vanitas and Memento Mori and you’ll see the beautiful grotesque in them all. This exhibition’s purpose is not to shock or dismay, but rather to ask the viewer to question their understanding of beauty by asking, “What makes an object or artwork appealing?” Is it the subject matter? Is it academic tradition? How much influence does our culture and society have over our perceptions? Can a beautifully rendered subject of decay or destruction be aesthetically pleasing or must it be automatically dismissed as “bad” (i.e. not art)? The ambition of this exhibition is to focus the observer’s response inward, to their own primeval fears and apprehensions, and to help them understand how these can influence our perceptions and reactions. After all, when we can bring ourselves to look under the bed, the monsters have always looked the same. This exhibition is sponsored by KILO 94.3 and KRXP 103.9.

FROM THE ARTS ASSOCIATES Hello,
We’ve had a wonderful summer with excursions and visits to galleries, artist studios, and unique restaurants throughout Colorado. The Arts Associates are gearing up for the fall season by assisting at the Buell Children’s Museum, the Ryals Library, and greeting at openings, performances and tours of our facility! Preparations have begun for the annual Own Your Own Art Show and Holiday Sale. This show features local and regional artists and a “Call for Entries” is now available at www. sdc-arts.org or by contacting Visual Arts Coordinator LuDel Walter (ludel@sdc-arts.org). The exhibition begins just in time to celebrate the holiday season with a members-only preview on November 18 immediately followed by a public reception. This year, the show extends through January 3, 2016 and promises to be an exciting and fun event. I invite you to attend the Arts Associates meetings which are listed in the calendar on page 12 and open to the public. I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the Sangre!
