FROM THE CEO

Happy New Year, Arts Center Members! It is with a deep sense of satisfaction that I look back on 2016 – a year full of great accomplishments, new partnerships, and abundant opportunities. I was pleased to revitalize the partnership with Pueblo Community College in the form of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which allows for greater access and opportunities for the students, faculty, and members of both institutions. John Steinbeck said, “Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.” We can all agree the human mind and spirit should be cherished and grown, and that is the heart and soul of this new MOU. My delight is to see groups of students at our Center as they experience something new and are inspired in their own works, student groups across our campus making pop-up sculptures for public display, or an intern working in the curatorial department and getting hands-on experience about conservation and collections. Working together, this is a perfect opportunity to develop individuals for future positions at the Arts Center and beyond. It was fitting for us to sign the agreement this winter in the White Gallery amidst cutting-edge paintings by Jenny Morgan, whose works reach beyond their painted surfaces towards that inner power we all possess. Shortly after, Mat Taylor began work on the Wall of Wonder mural project which now enlivens the south facing wall of the Center with vibrant arts and culture imagery thanks to an endeavor by staff and supporters during National Arts and Humanities Month. Another great delight this year was leading an Arts Center cultural heritage tour to Malta where I served as a consultant to their Museums Department from 1995-96. After twenty years it was wonderful to see how much my Maltese colleagues have developed their cultural assets and to share that with a group from Pueblo. I look forward to this spring, with a calendar full of original performances by our School of Dance, noteworthy touring productions like MOMIX, Representing the West in the Helen T. White Galleries and Fort Buell & the Western Frontier in the Children’s Museum, the beloved Festival Friday concert series, and more. The Arts Center creates artistic learning experiences for everyone. I encourage you to contact Alyssa (alyssa@sdc-arts.org) if you’re interested in securing one of our 2015 Fast Fact sheets to read about such unique experiences, which our Arts Center offers to the Southern Colorado community. A huge thanks to all who read this and for your continued support!

ABOUT THE JUROR: DON STINSON Artist Statement:

The landscapes of the West are like celebrities: famous, iconic, public attractions. Consequently, the art I make about my home ground contends with my own perceptions of this celebrity, but also with the perceptions of everyone else. Living in Evergreen, Colorado, I work within arm’s reach of landscapes such as Mount of the Holy Cross, Longs Peak and Mount Evans, sites that have been tied to our national identity by an artist’s hand since the mid 19th century. There is a wonderful wilderness ethic at work in these places, a determination to remain unchanged. But, the sites I find ripe with contemporary meaning exist not in the national parks or wilderness areas, but on the edges and around the fringes of those great reserves of beauty and wonder. These other, less privileged places – places by the side of the road when you leave the park, places altered by the necessity of use, shaped or misshapen by a growing human presence – are to me more poignant, more compelling by how visibly we have changed them. Remember that the treasured wildlands of the West were for centuries understood as nothing more than wastelands, lands to be conquered, developed, civilized. Today, these lands are the celebrated and protected. Now, their compelling beauty is universally accepted. Today’s “wastelands” are these less celebrated places, where we have to look hard to find the beauty in our efforts to accommodate change, make plans and attempt improvements. Our shifting perceptions about the celebrated and less celebrated lands in my home ground create a lively and vigorous tension in the culture, at large. That tension offers subjects for my art that fascinate. Even though what I find to paint are often spectacular fails, or simply sincere attempts at right living. Seeing these wastelands of today in their full complexity and beauty is difficult but I feel offers great rewards to art that embraces the challenge. In the late afternoon, painting in my studio in Evergreen, I am in both the literal shadow of Mt. Evans, and the figurative shadow of Albert Bierstadt’s Mt. Rosalie. I believe that great art, like a great land, is animated by the tensions within it. The tensions brought by change and a growing human presence to the West only get more compelling as we struggle to apprehend the areas beyond the shadow of our most celebrated landscapes.

Discover the many techniques and applications developed by Japanese artisans over hundreds of years. The collection of Gregory Howell focuses on works created during the 18th through 20th centuries. These objects represent the power and influence of form and function in daily life in Japan. Highlights include Hokkaido farmer’s clothing which uses textiles woven with natural grasses, ancient bamboo baskets from the mountain communities of Takayama, and a circular Edo Period lacquer ‘Jubako’ stacking lunch box from Kyoto. See contemporary ceramics from Japanese masters and other significant objects which were an integral part of life in Japan over the ages. Howell’s first encounter with Japan as a child fueled his passion for things Japanese. His Japanese art collection has been a work in progress for 40 years, and he is the 2006 Recipient of the Japan Foreign Minister’s Commendation for his lifetime service to the nation of Japan.

MORE FROM JAPAN STYLE...

“Beauty is the harmony of purpose and form.” — Alvar Aalto NETSUKE

from the collection of Charles Trent MAR 11 – MAY 21| 2ND & 3RD FLOOR FOYERS Pronounced “nets-keh”, these small, intricately carved sculptural objects made of ivory, wood, metal, or ceramic, were originally used as a button-like fixture on a man’s sash, from which small personal belongings were hung. The netsuke eventually developed into highly coveted and collectible art forms.

“Shokyusai”

Trent’s delightful collection holds over 100 netsuke art forms. Today we see a broad range from “folk art” carvings to levels of sophisticated fine art and exists as such today with true master-carvers from all over the world still creating these little masterpieces.

KIMONOS AND PRINTS

from the Collection of Drs. Reiko & Mark Clark MAR 25 – MAY 14 | KING GALLERY View kimonos made for every occasion - summer attire to spectacular wedding ensembles - plus see how garments vary for different age groups in Japanese culture. This dazzling exhibition includes ukiyo-e prints from the early 1800s and contemporary works depicting female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel, landscapes, and flora and fauna. The Clarks have been collecting Japanese art for over 20 years; their works have been shown nationally and are currently on view at the Japan Society in New York City. “Kyoto Maiko,” Paul Binnie

CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS

MAR 25 – MAY 14 | HOAG GALLERY

“Doki No NaKama,” Yasuhisa Kohyama

View ceramics by an emerging artist, an established artist, and a woman artist - a treat, as women ceramists are still relatively rare in Japan. The works will illustrate the rich tradition of ceramics in Japan, one of the world’s oldest art forms, and the different regional styles and influences that are inspiring today’s artists.

REGIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART OF JAPAN APR 1 – MAY 21 | REGIONAL GALLERY Featuring cutting-edge contemporary works by regional artists working in the traditions of Japanese style. The three featured artists in this exhibition are Riki Takaoka of Pueblo, Margaret Kasahara of Colorado Springs, and Renee Reiko Campbell of Colorado Springs. “Woman,” Riki Takaoka

Discover the Clark’s collection of noh plays on view in the Arts Center’s Hasan Pavilion outside the theater. Noh, or Nogaku — derived from the Sino-Japanese word for “skill” or “talent”— is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the 14th century. Developed by Kan’ami and his son Zeami, it is the oldest major theatre art still regularly performed today.

FROM SICILY TO PUEBLO: MEET FRANCO CATINELLA

By Bob Campbell

Franco Catinella is a native of Sicily who has woven his passion for food and old world values into a career as a professional chef and restaurateur. He started cooking for his family at the age of 12 and has been working professionally for about 20 years, coming to Pueblo from Sicily in 1997 after a brief stay in Boston. “I always had a passion for food,” Franco says, “All my family came from a restaurant background. I always spent time in the kitchen. After school, after homework you had to get to work.” Given a choice, Franco loves working with seafood and pastry, and is an accomplished pastry chef. He says the biggest challenge is finding a variety of seafood in Colorado. However, one of Franco’s secrets, regardless of what he’s preparing, is freshness and staying away from frozen ingredients, genetically modified foods (gmo’s), and making sure his dishes are healthy. As for healthy vs. fast food, Franco is a staunch supporter of the former. “I try to stay away from those (fast foods), because in all the classes I teach for kids, for adults, I teach nutritional values,” he says. “Fast food is not my cup of tea. I grew up in a totally different lifestyle. Everybody went home and had lunch together. Here, everybody is pretty much spread out.” His favorite part of being at the Buell Children’s Museum? “People, and kids. The special events they have. The great artists that come. You name it, it’s a great facility. A great place to be,” he says, “People feel comfortable here. They don’t feel rushed. They feel inspired.” When it comes to his favorite recipe, Franco’s not bashful about saying it is desserts, especially cannolis. Cream puffs are another specialty, and the recipe appears on this page. In addition to the Bistro, Franco does a lot of catering, not only for the Arts Center, but also business events and private parties. Many of his customers have followed him for years. And he has gone as far as to cater at a private resort in Vail.

CREAM PUFFS by Franco Catinella 2 packages of instant vanilla pudding 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup milk 1/2 cup butter 1 cup water 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup all-purpose flour 4 eggs Mix together pudding mix, cream, and milk. Cover and refrigerate to set. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a large pot, bring water and butter to a rolling boil. Stir in flour and salt until the mixture forms a ball. Transfer the dough to a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon, beat in the eggs one at a time. Drop spoonfuls onto an ungreased cooking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. The centers should be dry. Fill shells using a pastry bag when cooled.

Teaching kids to cook through the Friday Arts Academy at the Arts Center is something that Franco enjoys. “It’s awesome! Most of the kids I teach love to cook. They already have some background.” To Franco, “the most important thing to me is nutritional value.” He tries to get kids to experiment with foods and try different things. Many of his students feel that after 4 or 5 weeks of learning under him they are ready to prepare a dinner for their families. Franco teaches culinary classes for adults at the Arts Center; find the listings for his Ciabatta Bread and Marzipan Sicilian Cookies classes in the Winter/ Spring education schedule or online. Franco’s Bistro is located inside the Buell Children’s Museum, 210 N. Santa Fe Ave. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 7 PM. 719.295. 720 0 | sdc-ar ts .org | Sangre de Cristo Ar ts and Co nferen ce Center | MOSAI C

Q&A with

The McCarthy Family Arts Center Members since

2014

Winter Arts Associates Schedule JANUARY 17 (Tuesday): Presentation of Artisan Textiles FEBRUARY 21 (Tuesday): Music Writing Workshop by Guitar Teacher Ed Hill MARCH 20: Musical Presentation by Musician-in-Residence Aavalajn Wiggins APRIL 17: Drs. Reiko and Mark Clark discuss their Japanese Kimono and Print Collections, on display in the King Gallery MAY 15: Gregory Howell talks about Japan Style and the Form and Function Japanese Art Collection, on display in the White Gallery (All meetings take place on the 3rd Monday of the month, from 9:30 – 11:30 AM, unless otherwise noted.)

We’ve asked the McCarthy family (M. Phyllis with granddaughters Kaidyn and Brooklyn) a few questions during their visit on Puebloween, here’s what they had to say... Q: Where’s the first place you go when you visit the Arts Center? I go to the Buell Children’s Museum with the grandkids. Q: How and where do you find inspiration? We are inspired by the Children’s Museum’s exhibit changeups. And my granddaughter Brooklyn does Missoula Children’s Theatre. Q: Do you have a favorite artist? There’s just too many to choose from! I like John and Dorothy Mendoza, locally. My nephew is also a great artist for Disney, his name is Philip David Vigil. Q: What advice do you have for the next generation? Phyllis says, “Take today and make it special. Also, ‘The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all.’ That’s a Disney quote which I really liked.” Q: Just for fun – What song do you always sing along with? With the kids we sing all kinds of music, we sing Katy Perry songs.* * Editor’s Note - Katy Perry is the #1 answer to this question. Did you know that Katy Perry is actually a stage name? Her full name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. She studied Italian Opera, and cites Alanis Morrissette and the late Queen singer Freddy Mercury as influences on her music. Katy’s favorite song to listen to in the car? “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston.
