FROM THE CEO Dear Members, Friends, and Visitors, Marcus Garvey said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.” Our deeply rooted southwestern heritage is what makes our Arts Center unique, and that is unmistakable from the moment a visitor steps on our well integrated three-building, five acre, campus. They experience architecture inspired by the Pueblo peoples who built Mesa Verde, they view our exquisite permanent collection which chronicles more than a century of the art and the history of this region, and they encounter a warm and welcoming staff.
Jim Richerson, CEO
This summer was a whirlwind of exciting programs which brought thousands of people to the Arts Center campus, uniting them all under a common flag of arts appreciation. The Ansel Adams: Classic Images exhibition is seeing a record number of attendees, forcing us to extend our hours due to increased demand. Our Missoula Children’s Theatre week-long summer camp was at capacity with young actors and actresses gaining early experience in theatre arts and performing in a full length musical production of Aladdin. The 31st year of Festival Fridays was a joy to watch with a diverse crowd of true blue attendees and first-timers filling the Jackson Sculpture Garden. Our board continues with its commitment to building organizational integrity and long-range planning. A key part of that plan is strategically growing the board. Please join me in welcoming our newest additions to the board: Ginger Andenucio, Dr. Jeffrey Alexander, Joseph Arrigo, Carolyn Jackson, John Lee, Rosina Sonntag, Andrew Sanchez, and Barbara Vidmar. Thank you to everyone who has visited, volunteered, donated, become a member, signed up for a subscription to the performing arts season, or enrolled in a class. Our diversity - in people and programming - is what makes us strong, and our staff works hard to keep our unique Arts Center thriving and growing. Join us in celebrating the virtues embraced by our diversity,

RISE
JENNY MORGAN SELF-PORTRAITS IN COLORADO COLLECTIONS Guest Curated by Ivar Zeile, Owner/Director of the Plus Gallery in Denver
WHITE GALLERY | OCT 8 – JAN 15, 2017 ABOUT JENNY MORGAN: Born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1982, Jenny Morgan was the valedictorian of her 2003 graduting class, with a BFA from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Colorado. Jenny continued her higher education in art and recieved her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions in New York City, including solo shows at Driscoll Babcock Galleries and Like the Spice Gallery, as well as in London, UK at Beers Contemporary, and in Denver at Plus Gallery, where her career was launched. Morgan has participated in numerous international group exhibitions. Jenny was named the 2006 Top Representational Artist by the Rocky Mountain News, Top of the Rockies and was a finalist for the Outwin Boochever 2006 Portraiture Competition at the National Gallery in Washington D.C. She has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, New York Magazine, Art LTD (cover feature), The Village Voice, Playboy, Modern Painters, Hi Fructose (cover feature), The L Magazine, Poets and Artists, Maker, Working Class, Juxtapose (cover feature), Milk Maid, Whitewall, The Denver Post, The Rocky Mountain News, New American Paintings, and Denver Westword.
Rise, Jenny Morgan
Jenny currently lives and works in New York City, New York.
The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center is proud to present works by rising star, Jenny Morgan. Morgan’s deeply personal work pushes the boundaries of figurative art by exploring innovative methods of modifying her nearly photographic, meticulous paintings. Her haunting self-portraits are perfectly realized only to be obliterated; their surfaces sanded and stripped away to reveal physical and spiritual torment. By disturbing the surface of the canvas, she achieves a striking intensity and psychological depth in her work, breaking through the ideals of traditional portraiture and the preciousness of realism. Her self-portraits examine the complexity of individual perception, providing the viewer a visual and conceptual window into the exposed personae of the self. Says exhibition curator, Zeile, about Morgan, “From Van Gogh over a century ago, to Cindy Sherman today, self-portraiture holds a singular place in art, whether as a working tool, fascination, or ‘mirror’ of individual and collective reality that stimulates both artists and collectors alike. Rise: Jenny Morgan Self-Portraits in Colorado Collections is the first exhibition to capture this extraordinary development, a snapshot into one of the most exciting art practices of our times, shaping historic antecedents in a manner that is highly nuanced and thoroughly compelling.”
ABOUT IVAR ZEILE: Ivar Zeile is the owner and director of Plus Gallery, one of Denver’s most reputable programs of contemporary art exhibitions and artist representation. Operating independently since 2001, the gallery artists have received major acclaim on both local and national levels and the gallery itself was named “Art Space of the Year” in 2009 by the Denver Post. Zeile served as a member of the Denver Mayor’s Commission for Cultural Affairs from 2006 through 2011, and in the last decade has served as a board member for a variety of art-related groups including PlatteForum, the Denver Art Museum’s DAM Contemporaries, RedLine, and the Invisible Museum. In 2009, Zeile was appointed the Creative Director for the Denver Theatre District and has been curating motion-based art programs as well as billboard projects that engage the general public on a daily basis. In 2011, Zeile initiated Denver Digerati as an ongoing platform for supporting digital animation and motion-based artworks through public display on the Denver Transit District’s collection of outdoor LED screens.

ANSEL ADAMS: CLASSIC IMAGES WHITE GALLERY | NOW — SEPT 25
LOVESTRUCK DOODLES BOARDROOM | NOW — SEPT 25
With some of Adams’ most famous and best-loved photographs, this exhibit encompasses the entire scope of his work - elegant details of nature, architectural studies, portraits, and above all the magnificent landscapes for which he is so revered. Due to high demand, this gallery opens one hour early, at 10 am, Tuesday Saturday for the duration of the exhibition.
These charming “Lovestruck Doodles” are digital drawings - a format new to local artist Tom Taylor, AKA The Poet Spiel. Says the artist, “I set parameters for a series of whimsical animal images, each of them including the heart we interpret as “love.” And doodles are exactly what they were as I fiddled around with teaching myself how to “paint” with a mouse and a monitor.”
PORTRAITS FROM THE COLLECTION
CARL LINK: ILLUSTRATIVE PORTRAITS
KING GALLERY | SEPT 24 — JAN 7
2ND FLOOR FOYER | SEPT 24 — DEC 31
The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center’s collections have many wonderful examples of portraiture. From romantic, larger-than-life figures such as Doc Holiday, to paintings of Puebloans of great philanthropic stature, the people of the West have always been a popular subject matter for artists.
Carl Link was born in Munich, Germany in 1887. He attended the Royal Academy in Dresden and then moved on to the Royal Academy in Munich where several of the “Taos Ten” had studied. He became well-known for his portraits of rodeo cowgirls, Native Americans, and especially the dance and theatrical world.

JOHN SUHAY: PUEBLO’S PHOTOGRAPHER MAY 15, 1923 - JULY 25, 2016 In 1972, when the Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center opened, John Suhay became the first Artist-in-Residence and in 2010 was named the Arts Center’s Photographer Emeritus. He was the visual historian of Pueblo’s ever-changing landscape and rich native culture since he began taking photographs nearly 80 years ago. He said of his work, “I’m not an artist, I document. I find something in everything.” Born in Wellsburg, WV, of Slovenian descent, he first passed through Pueblo in 1943, on a troop train bound for California. “That train was blacked out – the (Japanese) had spies everywhere, maybe even in Pueblo,” Suhay said. “But they opened it up in the mountains, and I looked out, and I thought: Wow!” So in 1955, he moved to Pueblo and went to work at CF&I Steel Mill. And he took pictures, just as he had since he got his first camera, a Kodak Brownie, in 1938. He was inspired by the photographs in Life Magazine. He upgraded to a secondhand Rolleiflex and sold a picture to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for $3. In 1964, the Pueblo Service League hired Suhay to create a photographic essay of upper-middle-class life in Pueblo, to be used to persuade the wives of corporate executives that Pueblo would be a great place to relocate. This opportunity allowed him to quit the mills and take pictures full time. Suhay never took a photography class or had any formal instruction. “I try to see instantly, right now,” he said. “You’re not seeing the whole world, you’re seeing little bits of it. I hope that before I’m done, I can shut my mind out – no thought, just vision. John has an astonishing archive of more than 200,000 images, most created in and around Pueblo over the last half of the 20th century. John Suhay passed away July 25, 2016 in Pueblo.

Dear Members and Guests of the Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center, The Pueblo County Board of County Commissioners is proud of the 44-year partnership between the Arts Center and Pueblo County. We believe the future and the success of Pueblo will be centered around the arts. What draws people to a community and what defines its culture and its people are its art, its music, and its performance art. The Arts Center is really the heart and soul of this community.

As a native of Colorado, Richard Martinez had the opportunity to dance on a team that performed as an opening act for Reba McEntire in Denver. Soon afterward, he relocated to California where he competed in Ballroom, Country, West Coast Swing, and Salsa, as well as performed with various formation dance groups and a line dance team. During this time, Martinez received several awards and accolades. Amongst them was “Overall Champion” for taking first place in all six dances required at a country competition held locally, a “Most Upcoming Dancer” recognition award in Lake Tahoe, and a 1st and 3rd place in the World Salsa and Hustle “Jack and Jill” competition held in Las Vegas, NV. He eventually moved back to Colorado with a desire to provide the community with an opportunity to have fun learning to dance and is now the owner of Pueblo Dance Company, which provides social dance lessons locally.
“Richard’s goal is to keep the classes simple and allow the beginner to have fun learning how to dance.”
In 2011, Richard’s company began collaborating with the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center to work as an instructor for their social dance program. He has worked with students aged eight to eighty in the various programs offered by the Arts Center, and has volunteered as contributing choreographer for the play Guys and Dolls performed on the Arts Center stage. Now in his fifth year offering social dance classes at the Arts Center, Richard believes the classes have been successful due largely to the help of volunteers who assist with his classes. A special thanks goes out to Stephanie Miller, Vanessa Madrid, Ginny Waldron, Cassie Montoya,

Richard Martinez
Over the summer, Richard and his dance partner Judy Stefanich decided to hone their skills by competing in the newcomer amateur ballroom USA Dance Rocky Mountain Chapter 2016 Spring Dancesport Competition and the 2016 Colorado Country Ballroom Challenge. They competed in eighteen dances at each competition and came in first place overall in both events. As an amateur, Richard also had the opportunity to team up with ballroom professional dancer Nikki Morin and country professional dancer Kristin Ham to compete in the Pro/Am division. In the 2016 USA Dancesport Jam Series Rocky Mountain Showcase Ballroom Competition, Richard and Nicky took first place overall and Richard received a trophy for “Top Student.” After the first place finish, Richard pulled an abductor muscle but despite his injury he and Kristin were still able place in the top three in the country Pro/ Am division at the 2016 Colorado Country Classic with a third place overall finish. For Richard, dancing has always been fun and has given him the opportunity to teach and make a lot of new friends. Richard’s goal is to keep the classes simple and allow the beginner to have fun learning how to dance. Couples are encouraged but no partner is required. It’s a great way to meet people and enjoy dancing to different genres of music. Various classes are offered in American Ballroom Smooth (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, East Coast Swing), American Ballroom Rhythm (Cha-Cha, Rumba, Hustle, West Coast Swing, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Night Club 2-Step), Argentine Tango, Country 2-Step, and Line Dancing.

2005
We’ve asked the Archuleta family (Travis, Carrie, Jonah, Bennett, Adrienne, and Cameron) a few questions, here’s what they had to say... Q: Where’s the first place you go when you visit the Arts Center? The School of Dance - we practically live there! During Nutcracker season we are here at least thirty hours a week. Q: What do you enjoy most about the Arts Center? There’s something for every person in our family. Bennett took pottery classes, Cameron does Friday Arts Academy and Missoula Children’s Theatre, and Adrienne is a dancer.
Q: Do you have a favorite artist? Carrie: I try not to limit myself to one art form. We are a big music family and we appreciate visual arts, dance, and keep open minds. Different art forms speak to me at different times depending on what’s going on around me. Q: What are 3 key items you feel every person should have? A good support system, a passion, and an open mind. Q: Just for fun – What song do you always sing along with? We always sing along to two songs when we get into the car. They are “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri - which you have to sing LOUD to - and “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen.
