FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Of the many new exhibits, performances, and programs here at the Arts Center, I’m most excited about our newest Economic and Cultural Impact Statement because it tells our story of success and change within the community. This statement encompasses all things at the Arts Center for the year of 2014, and proves that the Arts are a driving force in the local economy with the Arts Center spending over $2 million annually on payroll, goods, and services. A noteworthy excerpt from the statement is that the Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall exhibit brought many new faces through our doors, including visitors from the states of Alabama, Arizona, California, District Of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Jim Richerson with artwork “Pine and Peak” Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, and by Gene Kloss the countries of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines in the month of October alone. I encourage each member to be an ambassador for the Arts Center armed with facts. For your own copy of the 2014 Economic and Cultural Impact Statement, please contact Marketing Manager, Alyssa Parga, at alyssa@sdc-arts.org. We will be putting copies into your membership letters as well.

This summer’s White Gallery exhibition is Colors of the Southwest: The Contemporary Southwest Art Collection of Charles A. & Jeanette Gilchrest White. This exhibit features contemporary artists like Frank Howell, Leland Holiday, and Margarete Bagshaw and will have its own catalog with page upon page of high-key colors, landscapes, and architecture. This is the first exhibition catalog the Arts Center has published in five years, was printed locally, and made possible by the unceasing generosity of the Whites. The Colors of the Southwest exhibit will open June 6 and run through the Chile and Frijoles Festival in September. Concurrently, visitors will experience the Southwest first-hand in the Buell Children’s Museum’s summer exhibit called Colorful Colorado: Camp Create-a-lot. The Buell Children’s Museum will have its own tribute to the beauty of our surroundings through the exploration of color and creativity in this camp-style exhibit, in collaboration with Lake Pueblo State Park, the biggest tourist attraction in Pueblo with 1.3 million visitors each year. I am delighted to announce that we will be hosting a collection of casts from Michelangelo’s Bozzetti, or working models in October. Because of the sophisticated 3-D laser mapping techniques of the Harry & Karly Spell Foundation, the Casa Buonarroti has allowed the casting of bronze sculptures in posthumous unique editions from the original fragile models of Michelangelo himself.

In January, I was asked to speak about the island country of Malta during a Director’s Talk open to Arts Center members and the public. Living and working in Malta as a museum consultant in 1995-1996, I grew fond of its scenery of stone and water. After the Director’s talk, interest was expressed for a trip in the spring of 2016. If you are interested in participating in this kind of group excursion, contact me.

The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center is honored to present Colors of the Southwest, an exhibition of artworks from the collection of Charles A. and Jeanette Gilchrist White. This stunning exhibition features artistic interpretations of life and varied perspectives of the Southwest, with artists and subjects native to the southwestern lifestyle. Containing art by some of the premier artists working in the genre, this truly special show will inspire and exhilarate; you’ll want to come back time and again to experience this wonderful feat of compilation. The Whites have meticulously and thoughtfully chosen each piece of their collection throughout the years creating a testament of their love for the southwest region: its people, art, and the artists that make the area so unique. (It says a lot about the Whites that many of those artists feel the same way about them.) Colors of the Southwest is about just that—the unimaginably vibrant colors of the land, the rich culture and history of the area. Pueblo has been called the northern gateway to the southwest, so mounting an exhibition of the finest examples of works by contemporary artists from the region has special meaning and value to the community—both to people who live here and to the people who will be drawn to Pueblo to view the exhibit. The art made here is a natural consequence of its surroundings—you can’t help but feel the passion that the Whites have for the Southwest and its art when viewing the exhibition. I invite you to examine the variety of themes within this exhibit, such as how this region’s artists have used high-key colors to create figures, architecture and landscapes; how the land and the people in the area define each other as manmade forms and the landscape meld together; and how the light, land and

Naptime by Malcolm Furlow tribal symbols have been deconstructed and abstracted by many of these artists. Take this opportunity to witness how the artists draw from their tribal traditions but seamlessly join a western European tradition of working in bronze and marble. Other themes include spirituality, as represented by the kachina and the human propensity for anthropomorphism. I hope you enjoy this beautiful exhibition which the Whites have so generously shared with us. This is a rare opportunity to view so much brilliance in one place.

SCHOOL OF ARTS

FOR KIDS & ADULTS With Jarrett Pottery, Potters-in-Residence

MEET THE NEW CURATOR OF EDUCATION: ATRELLE JONES Atrelle has been a member of the Arts Center staff for a year and has worked very closely with the Curator of Education, Jackie Henderson, to prepare for this new role. Atrelle looks forward to “continuing high-quality programs for children and adults; and working with school districts, private schools and home school groups to provide programs that will support their curriculum.” Atrelle plans to grow into year-round partners with educators and is excited about serving our community. The Education Department will be in good hands. Atrelle looks forward to working with new Assistant Curator, Zachary Friberg. “Zach is amazing with children. He is very personable and energetic, and his experience at the Buell Children’s Museum will be a wonderful asset to the Education Department.” For Atrelle, the best part of her job is the variety of activities and diversity of the individuals who participate in Arts Center classes and programs, from preschoolers to seniors. “I was surprised by the depth of the extraordinary programs, exhibits, and workshops the Arts Center offers to tour groups.” FUN FACT: Atrelle expects a smooth transition. “Jackie has assured me that she will continue her involvement with the Arts Center as a volunteer. Jackie often jokes about keeping her predecessor, Gary Holder’s phone number on speed dial. She has offered to keep the tradition!”

MEET THE NEW ASSISTANT CURATOR OF EDUCATION AND TOUR COORDINATOR: ZACHARY FRIBERG While new to this position, Zach is no stranger to the Arts Center and its programming. Zach has been helping children and leading tours as an attendant and docent with the Buell Children’s Museum for over 3 years. Zach is excited to help fulfill the Arts Center’s mission of bringing the arts to even more children in Southern Colorado within this new capacity. Did you love seeing Zach at the Buell Children’s Museum? Don’t worry – Zach’s favorite place on the Arts Center campus is the Magic Carpet Theater and he plans to continue his role in the Amazing Food Detective performances, on a stand-in basis of course! 719.295. 720 0 | sdc-ar ts .org | Sangre de Cristo Ar ts and Co nferen ce Center | MOSAI C

FROM THE ARTS ASSOCIATES Hello, Arts Associates will have a meeting Monday, May 18 which will be the last formal meeting of the season. While we do not meet formally during the months of June, July and August, we do plan three outings, one each month and we car pool, enjoy a lunch and have a wonderful time. The June trip will be to the Boulder area to visit the Leaning Tree exhibits and artists. The trip in August is planned to tour galleries and museums from Walsenburg to Trinidad and places in between. Our July trip is still being finalized, but sure to be exceptional. If you are interested in any of these trips or wish to learn more, please contact the Arts Center at (719) 295-7200 and we will get information to you. Hope to see you soon! -Dorothy O’Dowd President, Sangre de Cristo Arts Associates

Q&A

CONGRATULATIONS TO

with

BRAELYNN!

The Mills Family

Braelynn is the winner of “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” contest at the Buell Children’s Museum! Braelynn received a special tour of Cold Stone Creamery and won free ice cream for a year for submitting her original ice cream creation, called Candy Cane Blast. Special thanks to Cold Stone Creamery Pueblo!

Arts Center Members Since

2010

We’ve asked the Mills family a few questions, here’s what they had to say... Q: Where’s the first place you go when you visit the Arts Center? We love the whole museum! The Baby Barn is a favorite of our two-year-olds, but the Artrageous Studio on the second floor of the Buell Children’s Museum is also a favorite because of the endless art. Q: What do you enjoy most about the Arts Center? We love that the Arts Center is always changing the theme. We look forward to exploring after each change.

Q: What are you grateful for? We are grateful for so many fun things to do with kids in Pueblo. The Arts Center is always a favorite. Q: Just for fun – What song do you always sing along with? We have 7 and 9 year old girls, so “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift is a common dance song at our house. Our two year old loves “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.

Note: The Arts Center will feature a current member in each issue of the Mosaic Magazine. Want to see yourself in the magazine? Ask for a Membership Profile next time you visit.
