This year at the Arts Center, we are often asked, “How is the economy impacting you?” People often make the assumption that when money is tight, people will stop spending money on the arts. Naturally, the Arts Center is impacted by tough economic times, primarily from investment losses and reduction in donations from foundations and large donors. I can reassure you that the Board of Trustees and the staff of the Arts Center have proactively tackled these issues by trimming our budget, cutting expenses and curtailing spending wherever possible. Thanks to prudent investments and fiscal responsibility by our Executive Director and previous Boards of Trustees we are fortunate to be in a position to continue to offer all our wonderful programs. While these economic issues have created some challenges, we have also been pleasantly surprised by our audiences. During the first few months of the year, several of our Center Stage performances have been sold out with waiting lists. Attendance in the children’s museum is up, as well as in our galleries. Arts Center memberships have increased as well. We attribute this to several reasons. First, we believe that people often seek artistic experiences in economically anxious times. A humorous evening with 3 Redneck Tenors or a beautiful performance by American Ballet Theatre II may be just what is needed to soothe troubled souls. Second, we know people are traveling less and enjoying Pueblo more. We are surely benefiting from that. Finally, and most practically, we are a bargain. Those with family memberships (less than $4 per month) have unlimited free visits to galleries and the children’s museum. We offer high-quality traveling performances for an affordable price and without the drive to bigger cities. Our summer camps offer safe and creative art experiences for children for as little as $2.88 per hour. Funding from the City of Pueblo and Pueblo County enable us to host free public events throughout the year that always draw large crowds. We invite you to join us on June 12, 2009, for our next free public opening for Warhol & Friends and the Big Messy Art Adventure. As always, our thanks to our loyal supporters for helping us keep our quality programming in this challenging time. This summer our galleries and children’s museum come alive with contemporary art. Plan your visit today. Thank you, Sally M Berryman, Chair Arts Center Board of Trustees

WARHOL and Friends: Famous Artists to See Before You Die »

W

Warhol and Friends: Art to See Before You Die offers southern Coloradans the opportunity to experience some of the most influential and important artists from the United States, Colorado and Pueblo. Art — an important part of society since the dawn of mankind — has helped define societies, beautify our world and has caused controversy. Art always makes an impression and a statement.

In the United States, Modern and Contemporary art have helped shape and transform American culture and identity. Iconic artists like Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollack and Roy Lichtenstein have not only helped mold the art scene but have transformed how Americans view

by Karin Larkin, Ph.D, Arts Center Curator

and understand art. These internationally known artists are paired with exhibits focusing on prominent Colorado artists like Vance Kirkland, Virginia Maitland and Orlin Helgoe. So some may be asking…”what are modern and contemporary art and why have they been so influential?” The definitions of Modern and Contemporary art are rather simplistic contradicting their complex influences. Modern art is any artistic work produced between the 1860s through the 1970s, while Contemporary art refers to works produced since World War II. Modern art denotes art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists

experimented with new ways of seeing, and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. But, it wasn’t until after World War II that the United States became a major player. It is widely known that New York City is a magnet for artists. They often migrate there for the galleries, the exposure, and the patrons. But did you know that they also go for the inspiration from other artists and not all settle in the city? The East End of Long Island has attracted many diversely talented people such as artists, writers, musicians, actors, and directors over the years. These artists have searched for and found inspiration in the natural beauty of the landscape, the magnificent light and the endless beaches. The art gallery, theater, and meeting place known as Guild Hall, provided East Hampton with a cultural center and world class collection of art. Long Island, with close proximity to New York City, became a popular tourist destination with the onset of the Long Island Railroad in the late 19th century. In the 1870s, Hudson River School painters portrayed the white sand beaches of eastern Long Island. Winslow Homer came to visit in 1872 and in 1878. Thomas Moran and his family settled permanently in 1884. His home and studio became the center of life for artists who visited the village. In the teens, twenties and thirties many artists including Guy Pene du Bois and George Bellows, visited the area. Later after WWII, the Surrealists were welcomed guests. They were followed by the Abstract Expressionist artists Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Willem de Kooning, Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol, Photo Realists Audrey Flack and Chuck Close, 80’s and 90’s Neoexpressionist artists Eric Fischl, David Salle and Julian Schnabel as well as many contemporary artists today such as Ross Bleckner, Donald Sultan and April

Gornik. These artist-residents continue to make the East End the country’s foremost art colony. With all the artists attracted to the region, it should be no surprise that artists influenced each other and friendships formed that ultimately resulted in the development of new artistic movements.

The rise of American Abstract Expressionism, an American post–World War II art movement, was the first specifically American movement to achieve worldwide influence and put New York City at the center of the art world — a role formerly filled by Paris. This first major American avant-garde movement is often refered to as the New York School. Artists such as Max Ernst heavily influenced this movement. Pollack, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Robert Motherwell were all part of the

New York School of Abstract Expressionism.

Catapulted to national recognition through the work of Jackson Pollack, abstract expressionism was influenced by the earlier work of modernists, the avant-garde, and his wife’s (Lee Krasner also an artist) teacher.

“A common concern since the early part of the 20th century is the question of what constitutes art.

writer and his collected writings are a truly exceptional window into the abstract expressionist world. His essays are considered a bridge for those who want to learn more about non-representational art but who are put off by dense art criticism. These relationships among many others form the backbone of the American art scene. A common concern since the early part of the 20th century is the question of what constitutes art. Is Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and Dadaism really art? Serious art is ultimately exceedingly difficult to distinguish definitively from art that falls short of that designation. Guild Hall: An Adventure in the Arts allows visitors to decide for themselves whether Andy Warhol’s shoe drawing/painting or Robert Motherwell’s intaglio print of three lines constitutes art. Whether you love or hate Modern and Contemporary art, there are certain artists you should experience in person. The exhibit Warhol and Friends: Art to See Before You Die, brings some of the best and most interesting Modern and Contemporary artists of the United States, Colorado and Pueblo together and to Southern Colorado. This may be your one and only chance to view works by Andy Warhol, Thomas Moran, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, de Kooning and Jackson Pollack without leaving Pueblo. Learn about the relationships of these and other artists and how it shaped the face of the American art scene in the White Gallery.

Is Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and Dadaism really art?”

However, Motherwell is credited with bringing the work of the New York School to the public eye. He toured the country giving speeches that articulated what he and his friends were doing in New York. (Did you know that Robert Motherwell taught art at the Bemis School of Art in Colorado Springs?) Without Motherwell’s devotion to communication, well-known abstract expressionists like Rothko — who was extremely shy and rarely left his studio — might not have made it into the public eye. Motherwell was also a excellent 18 | sdc-ar ts.org | MOSAIC

by Karin Larkin, Ph.D, Arts Center Curator

The collection at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center has grown significantly since the Arts Center’s inception 37 years ago. Our collection, once comprised solely of Western art, has grown into four distinct collections that include the: • • • •

Francis King Collection of Western Art Gene Kloss Collection Ruth Gast Historic Santos and Southwestern Art Collection Regional Contemporary Collection

During the later part of the summer, we will showcase important selections from each of our four collections in a retrospective exhibition that highlights the best of our recent acquisition. Since the generous donation by Francis King, the Arts Center has been fortunate to add significant pieces of art to that collection — expanding and advancing King’s collecting vision. Over the past 15 years or so, the Arts Center has been lucky to amass the largest collection of Gene Kloss prints in the country. This summer exhibit will showcase these including her watercolors, prints and other important pieces. Works from our Regional Contemporary collection will feature the best regional artists in our collection including Orlin Helgoe, Fritz Scholder and many others. Finally, we will also feature some of our most spectacular southwestern pieces from the Ruth Gast Historic Santos and Southwestern Art Collection. Don’t miss this opportunity to see first glimpses of some of our most recent and prized acquisitions. Karin Larkin, Ph.D. is the Curator of Visual Arts at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center. Her background includes a doctorate degree in philosophy with a concentration on anthropology and material culture studies from the University of Colorado in Boulder as well as more than 12 years of experience in museums throughout the Southwestern United States.

Messag e from the C i t y Dear Arts Center Members,

2008 P ueblo City Council Barbara Vidmar, President Ray Aguilera Larry Atencio Mike Occhiato Vera Ortegon Randy Thurston Judy Weaver

The City of Pueblo is proud of the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center and the role it plays in our community. For over 35 years, we have provided financial support for its many programs with the belief that quality of life issues are important to the citizens of our community and that the Arts Center makes our community a better place to live, work and play. I would like to assure you that the Pueblo City Council is working hard for our constituents so that we remain a dynamic community that the entire state of Colorado can be proud of. Our local attractions, like the Arts Center, help make this a very achievable goal. Together we will continue to thrive in this successful public-private partnership that makes the Arts Center and our community the very best that it can be. On behalf of my fellow City Council members, let me take the opportunity to acknowledge the vital role that the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center plays in the growth and artistic education of our community. We extend our most sincere gratitude for all you do. Sincerely, Barbara A. Vidmar, President

Messag e from the C o u n ty Dear Arts Center Members, The Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center continues to shine as the “Crown Jewel” of downtown Pueblo. The Pueblo County Commissioners are extremely proud of the Center’s significant contributions to our community and far beyond! Because the Arts Center is so inviting and provides such a wealth of activities, classes and entertainment for the community, we are well aware of the need for continual maintenance for such a highly utilized facility. In 2008, Pueblo County provided $126,738.26 in in-kind services to repair items in the various buildings; i.e., classrooms, theatre, conference rooms and Children’s Museum. As our country entered into a major recession, the reality of cutbacks nationwide has instilled anxiety in all of the non-profit organizations within our community. We, as your Board of County Commissioners will continue to strive to maintain a sound economy that is within our means to manage, and will continue to work to ensure that the Arts Center’s major needs will be addressed in 2009. Sincerely, Anthony Nunez, 2008 Chair Pueblo Board of County Commissioners

Messag e from the c h a i r Dear Arts Center Members,

“I believe it is important to expand the mind through artistic endeavor.

As you will see on the pages of this Annual Report, we tackled 2008 with intense creativity and innovation. From the afterschool program to Studio210, the Arts Center extended its outreach into the community. I enjoyed my year as Board Chair, and I learned a few surprising things about the Arts Center. I learned that the Arts Center is truly built on partnerships: between the staff and Trustees; between the Arts Center and Pueblo County; between the Arts Center and the community; and between the Arts Center and its donors and members. In 2008, these partnerships supported us in bringing a variety of arts to all people in Pueblo. I also learned how important membership is to the Arts Center. If you are already an Arts Center member, pat yourself on the back. While the benefits of an Arts Center membership are fabulous, a membership is also a great investment in the Arts Center. The staff works hard writing grants and raising funds. However, many of those monies are tied to specific programs. Membership dollars work very hard for the operation of the Arts Center. And, as we face trying economic times, membership will have an even greater impact on the Arts Center. I learned that creating art is an amazing experience. I have taken several arts classes at the Arts Center. Most recently, I attended a master painting class from renowned artist Tim Diebler. It was an inspiring and unique experience. I believe it is important to expand the mind through artistic endeavor. If I can learn to paint from a master artist, anyone can enrich his or her life with art. Finally, I have learned there are many, many ways to support the Arts Center. I would like to thank all of you who attended our events, took an art class, volunteered your time, enjoyed our galleries, played at the children’s museum, danced at Festival Fridays, became an Arts Center member, watched a performance and shared our enthusiasm. While we have all worked hard in 2008, the upcoming year promises new challenges and surprises. Please continue to help us create, innovate and celebrate. Sincerely, Daniel J. Lere, Ed. D Chair, Board of Trustees

Message from the Director Dear Arts Center Members, The year 2008 like most of our lives was one of ups and downs! I try to concentrate on the positive side, for me the cup is always half full! Rentals of our well kept County buildings remain steady with high marks from clients for good customer service. The Children’s Museum remains popular with creative exhibits and make and take projects. Our School of Dance, with a well trained faculty, has hit high numbers for enrollment which means we have quantity and quality. The education programs have exploded in numbers. The new Afterschool Program and the popular camps which combine participants with our artists-inresidence are satisfying to us and our customers. For more than twenty years we have presented in our 500 seat theater two performing art subscription series. Center Stage has entertained a mostly adult audience and the Children’s Playhouse Series is really a popular family series. Of course, Festival Fridays remains popular with the party, dancing, good to meet you crowd in January inside and July outside. We remain Pueblo’s main box office for not only our own events but for a dozen or so other events including Broadway Theater League, the Symphony and the Summer Musical. The success of our new membership category “Studio 210” has attracted a new vibrant audience. The Arts Center is just that “The Center: for most of the visual, dance, education and performing arts in Pueblo. The Arts Center is the largest arts facility in southeastern Colorado attracting over 225,000 visitors annually. Our thanks to our members for the support we receive which keeps this 2.8 million dollar county facility in operation. The Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers realize that 2009 is not going to be easy, but with help from our friends we shall be OK! With warm regards,

Maggie Divelbiss Executive Director

The Arts Center Counts! 20 exciting reasons we are proud of 2008

1. Young at Art Afterschool Program: The Arts Center launched the Young at Art Afterschool Program in January of 2008. This successful new program brought art into the lives of children each Friday afternoon of the school year, while also solving practical problems for families. Students in Pueblo City Schools are dismissed at 1:30 every Friday afternoon. Young at Art provided a safe and creative place for children during this time. Best of all, the Young at Art program was able to include children – regardless of their ability to pay – because of funding from many donors. 2. Studio210: This Arts Center membership-plus program enhances the Arts Center mission by developing a dynamic network of arts patrons, rising local leaders and professional local artists. Members of Studio210 enjoyed exclusive invitations to parties, private exhibition viewings, a tour of a private art collection, unique insights about art and the opportunity to connect with others in Pueblo’s emerging creative class. 3. Great performances: Center Stage and the Children’s Playhouse Series continued to dazzle audiences with high-quality traveling performances. Audiences were wowed with acts from Chanticleer to Soweto Gospel Choir. Best of all, both performing arts series share standout performances at affordable ticket prices. Reasonably priced tickets are only possible because of the support of our donors. 26 | sdc-ar ts.org | MOSAIC

4. Hollywood: Hollywood came to Pueblo in the summer of 2008. Many visitors came and spent hours examining beautiful and authentic costumes from period movies, like Titanic, Pride & Prejudice, Howard’s End and Evita. Artwork created by celebrities – James Dean, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Charles Bronson – also thrilled Arts Center guests. In conjunction with the Hollywood-themed exhibitions, the Arts Center hosted its 36th annual anniversary gala – Glitz & Glamour. This glamour-studded event raised nearly $75,000 in profit for all Arts Center programs. 5. Bonfils-Stanton Foundation: On May 2, 2008, Maggie Divelbiss, Arts Center Executive Director, was awarded the distinguished BonfilsStanton Foundation’s 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award in the arts and humanities. The Denver-based foundation gives three awards each year to Coloradans for distinguished careers in community service, the arts and humanities, and science and medicine. Divelbiss shared her special day with all five of her children, and Arts Center Trustees of Distinction Sandy Stein and Bob Jackson. She also had the opportunity to chat with Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Governor Bill Ritter. 6. PlayMotion: The Magic Carpet Theater at the Buell Children’s Museum got a bit more magic in 2008 with the launch of a new large-scale virtual reality program – PlayMotion. Both physically and mentally interactive, PlayMotion is a visually stunning playground where the fullbody movements of children are projected into a variety of backgrounds. Throughout the year, children were able to frolic in assorted interactive dimensions: The Solar System, Virtual Water, Teapot Sympony, Trees, SnowMo Sapiens and more. 7. Great Local Artists: While the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center is well-respected statewide, we pride ourselves on showcasing the work of great local talent – along with art by nationally and internationally respected masters. In 2008, the Arts Center showcased the work of 249 local artists. 8. New Art Pieces: The Arts Center’s rich collections garnered new pieces in 2008. From the rustically beautiful crucifix bulto donated by KellyPaul Birner to the large oil landscape painted by Tim Diebler, the Arts Center’s Visual Arts Committee accepted a variety of donated art pieces that complemented the Arts Center collections. (On a special note, many of these newly acquired art pieces from the Arts Center collection will be on display in late July of 2009.) 9. Summer Camps: The Arts Center was teeming with children this summer as we hosted 8 weeks of art-filled summer camp. Each week of camp included 16 different arts classes taught by either certified teachers or practicing professional artists. An extension of the Young at Art Afterschool Program, summer art camps provided a safe, creative and air-conditioned place for children during the summer. Participating kids had the opportunity to learn dance, BrainGym, sculpture, archaeology, creative writing, cartooning and much, much more.

10. S ong of Pueblo: With generous support from the Hasan Family Foundation, the Arts Center and El Pueblo History Museum hired famed composer and actor Daniel Valdez to create an oratorio about the history of pueblo. Valdez – best known for the films La Bamba and Zoot Suit – wrote and composed Song of Pueblo: An Oratorio, which premiered at the Arts Center Theatre in November 2008. Part of the Hasan Drama Fest 08, Song of Pueblo impressed sold-out audiences with the power of art to entertain, educate and inspire. Beyond the performances, Song of Pueblo created artistic opportunities for a wide-range of local musicians and vocalists, from ages 7 to 92. 11. F acility Rentals: People often wonder why the Arts Center hosts so many wedding receptions. The Arts Center is often asked: What do wedding receptions have to do with art? The answer to that question is, quite simply, a lot! Facility rental is an integral piece of the Arts Center’s financial sustainability. In 2008, the Arts Center facility rental – with the generously donated in-kind support of Pueblo County – earned the Arts Center nearly $150,000 in operating funds.

Young at Art Afterschool Program 1,824 attendees 580 classes taught

12. T he Nutcracker & The Firebird: The Sangre de Cristo Ballet Theatre Company (SBT) delighted audiences in both the spring and the winter of 2008. In March, SBT showcased a full spectrum of local youth talent in performances of The Firebird. As part of the annual holiday tradition, The Nutcracker played to sold-out audiences, awing them again with the precision and skill of the young dancers trained in the Arts Center School of Dance.

Buell Children’s Museum 28,577 visitors 100 yards worth of glue sticks used 200+ bears decorated the holiday Teddy Bear Tree 42 interactive make-and-take art stations 1 new PlayMotion virtual reality experience

13. S chool Tours & Target Field Trip Mini-Grants: The Arts Center loves to play host to the thousands of school kids who visit the Buell Children’s Museum and Arts Center galleries every year. Teachers often tell us that a field trip to the Arts Center is a rare arts experience for their students in today’s test-centered schools. However, with rising gas prices and more field trip limitations, many schools worried that they might not be able to take a field trip to the Arts Center. Fortunately, Target, Inc., generously donated money to the Arts Center to create a fund for field trip mini-grants. With this fund, the Arts Center can pay half of a visiting school’s bus expense.

14. M aster Classes: The Arts Center School of Arts expanded its educational offerings with the introduction of Master Classes. Taught by professional, master artists like Michael Untiedt and Tim Diebler, these special classes have connected aspiring artists with expert instruction. Participating students have raved about both the level of expertise and the quality of the instruction. 15. O nline Class Registration: The Arts Center launched online registration for all of its School of Arts classes. This new web-based registration makes it easier for customers to sign up for classes, any time of day or night. Visit sangredecristoarts.org/education to explore class offerings.

16. P odcasts: IPods provide vast interactive gallery experience on an itty-bitty machine. In 2008, visitors were able to experience artist interviews and in-depth exhibit information by using a gallery iPod checked out from a gallery guard. Podcasts were also available for download from iTunes or the Arts Center’s web site. Podcasts and iPods will continue to be a part of Arts Center exhibitions. 17. M issoula Children’s Theatre: Part of Hasan Drama Fest 08, the Arts Center hosted Missoula Children’s Theatre in summer 2008. Under the guidance of professional actors from Missoula Children’s Theatre, 75 local children performed “Jack in the Beanstalk.” In less than a week, the performance was ready for the stage. Children auditioned on Monday, rehearsed throughout the week, and performed the show for the public on Saturday. 18. T own & Center MOSAIC: The marketing department of the Arts Center kicked off 2008 with a new, expanded version of the decades-old Town & Center MOSAIC. Developed to be the arts magazine for Pueblo County and beyond, the MOSAIC features articles and information about artists, the benefits of art, and arts events. 19. Fes tival Fridays: In its 28th year, Festival Fridays created dancing fun for many Puebloans in both the winter and summer of 2008. Part of a Pueblo tradition on 9 Fridays a year, Festival Fridays continues to raise important funds for the Arts Center’s operations and programs. 20. G reat Donors! All of the programs and operations at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center are only possible because of the support of loyal and generous donors. From performing arts to our afterschool program, from the children’s museum to gallery exhibitions, Arts Center donors make a significant difference to the community of Pueblo. If you enjoy the Arts Center, please give a thanks to our 2008 donors. (See next page.) MOSAIC | sdc-ar ts.org | 29

T h e C reat i v e Li fe C i r cl e Legacy giving

No one says, “I want to die without a will!” While many people may act like they don’t need a will, everyone generally agrees – in theory -- having a will is a good idea. In truth, no one dies without a will. The state government has seen to that. Legislators devised a general will that stipulates how an estate must be disbursed, when we forget to do it ourselves. However, the state can only make assumptions about people want generally. They do not attempt to capture our individual priorities and desires. Thus, when you do not create a personalized will, you have chosen by default to have the state decide how your estate is managed. Inaction does become a choice. On the other hand, a personalized will (or other transfer document such as a living trust) is of great value. It gives you peace of mind. It prescribes who you want to handle your affairs and who will benefit from your estate. It also determines how you will be remembered and how your estate will further your ideals and values beyond your lifetime.

At the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, we known that our many friends are supporters are quite willing to include the Arts Center in their estate plans. They believe in our mission and want to invest part of their estate in our future financial health. The willingness is there. Understanding the value of a will and wishing to remember the Arts Center in your estate plans are good first steps. However, the next step is action. And what you need is will power. Will power gives you the opportunity and freedom to make your own choices about your estate. Will power says you are determined, decisive and proactive. Will power enables you to continue to make a difference in your community beyond your lifetime. Boost your will power, move into action and call your attorney or accountant today. Please let us know if you have any questions or if you thinking about us as you do your estate planning. Call Maggie Divelbiss at 719-295-7209.

About the Creative Circle T he Creat ive Circ le is a pa r tnership between the Arts Center and individuals who name the Arts Center in their estate plans. When you join the Creative Circle, you are a part of our future posterity. You are making a statement that the educational work we do at the Arts Center is valuable and that you want to be a part of this work living on. If you have already put the Arts Center in your will or estate plans or plan to, let us know. We would love to have you join this amazing group of visionary people.
