FROM THE ARTS CENTER Dear Performing Arts Lover, Since you’ve opened this booklet, I already know you share my excitement about performing arts in our Southern Colorado community. Thank you for your continued support of the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center’s programming. I am pleased to share this season brochure with you, announcing the fantastic lineup for the upcoming 20162017 season with award-winning artists in our Children’s Playhouse Theatre, Regional Series, and of course the 40th Anniversary Season of our Center Stage Series. At the heart of our performing arts series’ success is its devoted base of season ticket holders, allowing them to experience a full range of internationally-touring productions. If you are not already a season ticket holder, I hope you will consider a package this season. A subscription lets you guarantee priority seating to great performances, and gives you the best possible pricing on tickets. This season’s offerings range from world-class ballet, thrilling theater, and accomplished musicianship. We’ve also introduced the Sangre de Cristo Regional Series which highlights the talent we have right here in our own backyard. CAPITOL STEPS: WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE ELECTING

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2016 AT 3:00 PM Combining satire with musical theatre, the Capitol Steps give a comedic tongue-incheek performance, drawing inspiration from current political headlines. Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums, including their latest, Mock the Vote. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

Aquila Theatre, in its 25th anniversary season, stages Murder on the Nile, by one of the greatest mystery writers in world literature - Agatha Christie. This brilliant new production features a masterful whodunit with Aquila’s clever signature style. Who can be trusted? Who holds the truth? Who is a suspect? Aquila Theatre brings its innovative touch to this deliciously dangerous murder mystery with brilliant direction, superb acting, thrilling physicality and stunning designs. SLAPSTICK SONATA

[CIRK LA PUTYKA] TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 2017 AT 7:30 PM The twenty-member ensemble cast features professional acrobats, actors, dancers, musicians and puppeteers in this wordless theater performance, telling the story of overnight laborers in a Prague warehouse. The night crew breaks from routine, dazzling audiences with physical comedy, balancing gags and acrobatic feats. Enhanced by the music of Mozart, Handel, and more, with ‘miraculous living constructions,’ this show is not to be missed.

[MOMIX] THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2017 AT 7:30 PM MOMIX is an internationally acclaimed dance company under the direction of Moses Pendleton, featuring inventive and elegant routines. Following a ten year hiatus, Opus Cactus returns and brings the Sonoran desert to life. Be amazed by illusions of lizards, landscapes, fire, and motion. With over 35 years of experience under their belts, the company’s dance-illusionists use light, shadow, music, and the human form to illustrate their intricate stories.

[WITH LYNN TREFZGER] SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2016 AT 1:00 PM Voices of Comedy is a one-woman ventriloquist act featuring a unique cast of supporting characters including Judd the grumpy old man, Chloe the precocious little girl, Buford W. Bear, and Camelot the lovable camel. For more than 30 years, Lynn Trefzger has performed for international audiences as a premier entertainer for Disney Cruise Lines. She is featured in a recently released comedy/documentary about the art of ventriloquism with Jay Johnson and Jeff Dunham called “I’m No Dummy” by NBC Universal. Accolades include the “People’s Choice Award,” “Comedy Entertainer of the Year,” and “Variety Entertainer of the Year.”

[WITH SANGRE de CRISTO BALLET] SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016 AT 1:00 PM This beloved holiday tale follows Clara on her magical journey to the Kingdom of Sweets as she meets fanciful characters like the Rat King, Snow Queen, and Sugar Plum Fairy. Audience members can easily follow Clara’s dreamy adventure in this condensed and narrated version of the Nutcracker Ballet - perfect for children of all ages. Watch as the tale comes to life with dance, costumes, and sets that will fuel the imagination!

[PHAMALY] SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2017 AT 1:00 PM Adapted for stage from the book James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this story centers around James - a young boy who discovers a magic potion that leads to an unforgettable adventure! Although the plot departs from the events in the book, the adaptation honors the spirit of Dahl’s original material. The Phamaly Theatre Company (formerly known as The Physically Handicapped Actors & Musical Artists League) produces multiple plays and musicals annually for the Denver Metro region.

Based on the original 1816 E. T. A. Hoffmann story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, with a bit of a twist and set to the famous score by P. I. Tchaikovsky. This holiday treat features the stunning battle scene in which Clara and the Nutcracker Prince make their way through a mystical land, and encounter enchanting characters along the way.

HOT FUDGE SUNDAY

[SANGRE de CRISTO DANCERZ] SUNDAY, APRIL 23, 2017 AT 3:00 PM The Sangre de Cristo Dancerz is a resident company of the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center composed of differently-abled individuals of all ages who perform and rehearse under the artistic direction of Robert J. Doyle. The Sangre de Cristo Dancerz serve up the annual spring favorite which showcases the Dancerz’ own choreography to their musical favorites. See special guest performances by local musical groups who will accompany the Dancerz on stage. After the performance, the audience is invited to stay and enjoy an ice cream treat with the performers.

Watch the second act of Giselle, a romantic ballet with traditional choreography about a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is betrothed to another. Audiences will be captivated as the Wilis, a group of supernatural women, summon Giselle from her grave, targeting her lover for death, but Giselle’s great love frees him from their grasp.

This performance features the rigorous training of pre-professional dancers as the culmination of the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance Summer Intensive program. Accompanied by guest instructors, witness the techniques of highly trained preprofessional dance students with progressive original choreography during this annual summer dance showcase.

PAPER BIRD [CONCERT]

SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 2016 AT 7:30 PM

Paper Bird is a six-piece indie folk pop band hailing from Denver, Colorado, who emerged from the same environs that launched such outfits as Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats and the Lumineers. The group has toured extensively throughout the U.S., sharing bills with the aforementioned bands as well as Daryl Hall & John Oates, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Shakey Graves. On their soon-to-be-released self titled album, the band collaborates with world-­renowned musician, singer and songwriter John Oates, who co­-produced the album with Aikins’ fellow Canadian David Kalmusky.

PUEBLO MUNICIPAL BAND HOLIDAY CONCERT

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2016 AT 2:00 PM Sing along to holiday favorites with Pueblo’s professional-level concert band. Led by award-winning conductor Mark Emery, featured musicians of the Pueblo Municipal Band include David Aldag, Gerald Campbell, Ph D., Sharon Campbell, Edi Coletti, John Falsetto, Susan Falsetto, James Marcum, Brent Ritter, and Charlou Simonson. The Pueblo Municipal Band is a community staple, and has been performing locally since 1913.

[WYNOT RADIO THEATRE] SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2017 AT 2:00 PM SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2017 AT 7:30 PM It’s Cinco-Adventuro as 1940-something radio detective Rick Luger goes international in this epic spoof of Casablanca (and many others). The small tropical island of El Cubo de Toro is the setting for intrigue, mystery, and an ancient bubbly formula worth countless tens Editor’s Choice for BEST COMEDY of twenties. With a plot as thick as the accents, it’s an exotic epic worthy of applause!
