Grandparent’s Room Master Bedroom My Bedroom

Kitchen Puja Room Store Room

FIRST FLOOR

The bedroom next to the kitchen actually acts as a storage room as it is the closest to the kitchen . And , is semi private because it is accessed by relatives as well .

PUBLIC SEMI PRIVATE PRIVATE SEMI PUBLIC

The master bedroom is actually my parent’s room , however it is currently inhabited by me and my sibling . It is a room which allows access to my friends and relatives because of it’s size . The washroom is also used by everyone as it is biggest bathroom of the house . It behaves as a semi – public area .

There is a conflict in movement at the junction of the kitchen as it also , paves way to the bedroom and the adjacent bathroom . There is not enough circulation space behind the seats of the dining as there is a crockery window . The entry to my drawing room is through the lobby because the doors of the drawing room are huge and are also obstructed by furniture .

MOST FREQUENT RARE

Despite of being the first room of the floor , my bedroom is not accessed much because receives a lot of noise as it is towards the roadside .

There is a store room behind the entry door of the house . It thus becomes extremely hard to access the store room , as there is no room for movement . There is not much clearance space between the crockery cabinet and the dining table .

There is no particular area of emphasis in my house , as the eyes keep moving around . There is proportion and balance in my house in accordance to the placement . There is proper symmetry in most of the spaces of the house .

DESIGN BRIEF Drawing Room Existing : My Drawing Room is the most formal area of the entire house. It has a separate entry of it’s own. It is used only to entertain formal guests and relatives. It has a huge L-shaped sofa which adjusts around twelve people. It has a massive double door and two windows. Problem : The entry to the drawing room is not actually used. All the formal guests and relatives actually use the lobby and the dining area to entre the drawing room. Solution : To treat the lobby, dining and drawing as one big interactive space that allows to accommodate both the formal as well as informal guests. Or to not allow the guests to use the informal entry to entre the formal space. Dining Room Existing : The existing dining room actually acts as a buffer area between the family lounge and drawing room. It accommodates eight people. It has a huge cutlery console at it’s back. Problem : The cutlery console does not allow circulation as the chairs tend to collide with it’s windows. It gets extremely congested as there is hardly any space to move. It also creates a problem for the one serving food. Solution : To place the cutlery window at a more appropriate place so that a clear circulation around the dining could be achieved. Family Lounge Existing : The family lounge is the most used space of my house. It has a center table. It has a TV console. It has three sofas. It is also used as an entrance lobby as the entry to the house is through the family lounge. Problem : The entrance to the house is through the family lounge. It becomes very congested and also sometimes interrupts the privacy of the space. Solution : To create a separate entrance lobby that takes one to the lounge in order to have a buffer that acts as overlapping space.

Kitchen Existing : The existing kitchen is very compact, it has very limited storage and also is in the corner of the house. Problem : Not much storage space, very small and no proper circulation space. Solution : To have proper cabinets for storage and a bigger area for the kitchen , to have a better kitchen triangle and proper circulation. Master Bedroom Existing : The master bedroom is the biggest room. It is on the first floor. It has three windows. It has two sitters. It has a home theatre. It has a bathroom and a small storage room attached to it. Problem : The bedroom has been propped a lot which does not allow proper circulation. Also the entry to the bedroom is a little narrow. Solution : Not put a lot of things in the bedroom. Also, the entry should be a little more wide. My Room Existing : My bedroom has a bed and a TV console. It has an attached bathroom and balcony. It is on the first floor . It is the first room on the floor. Problem : It does not have enough space for storage and also there is no place for me to study or keep my books. Solution : To have a study space and proper storage space in the bedroom.

ZONING The house has been zoned effectively, with clear distinction between public, private and semi – private areas. The bedrooms at the back remain completely private, whereas the living and the deck are public areas.

Private Semi – Private Public

STRUCTURE AND AXIS The house is based on a grid which gives it a linear axis. It has a cuboid like structure and has lies horizontally on the plane.

CLEARANCE (MOVEMENT) There is very clear movement seen inside the house. At the entrance one meets a partition which directs us towards the living or lounge area. There is a very clear pattern of circulation in the entire house .

CLEARANCE (OPERATIONAL FURNITURE) 1. 2.

2

3.

The furniture placed right in front of the television in the master bedroom would cause obstruction in vision as well as circulation. The sofa has been placed right across the sliding door, which would create obstruction in clearance and movement. There is no storage in any of the bedrooms. The idea of having a separate room for just storage is quite interesting. However, it does not allow easy and convenient access to cupboards.

PROXIMITY The location of the study was important. It was a place which would allow one to work in peace but at the same time be centric enough to be able to keep an eye on other things. Its position within the TV room takes care of all these parameters and the tall faรงade of the desk ensures privacy and hides the clutter. It is a well designed space in the house.

SUN PATH AND DAY LIGHT

E

Natural light plays an important role in the wellbeing of a place and giving it the correct energy. The living area of the apartment has been designed such that it extends the inside and also pulls the natural light inwards. Thus, the area receives right amount of sun. It also has a deck which receives ample day light.

3 2

The concept of multi-purpose spaces has been successfully applied in the house as the study is also used as a dining and a sitting area . The study has a book shelf which is mounted on a partition wall, which acts as an interesting element in the space. A floor-to-ceiling ‘black box’ forms the core of the house. Covered with black wallpaper in its entirety, it houses the master wardrobes and an ornate guest bathroom. It becomes the point of emphasis of the area. The partition at the entry has a sitting at the back which allows it to act as an unique multi - functional furniture piece. An exposed concrete wall takes up one length of the living room. It provides an ideal backdrop for some of the clients’ art collection; and its continuation into the deck blends the inside with the outside.

MATERIAL AND COLOR SCHEME

4

Minimalistic and modern furniture has been used to design spaces. Wooden flooring has been done throughout the house. A lot of propping has been done in the apartment. Shades of brown, beige and white have been used the most. Tints of blue and black have also been used to highlights in some areas.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Asymmetry

SPACIAL CONFIGURATION The apartment works on a strong horizontal axis. The sliding doors have been cleverly configured as they slide and fold when a third room is needed. Otherwise, they are kept open to add expanse to the living and the dining area. Sliding doors have been used throughout the house to explore the degree of privacy.

Incorporating spaces in design according to the conclusions made in the Family Research Paper. Design should always have some context i.e. factors related to the cultures of a family should be looked into. The lobby is a public space as it allows access to all , where as the drawing room is semi – private as it accommodates formal guests however the entry to the drawing room is through the lobby itself , because the doors of the drawing room are huge and are also obstructed by furniture . The master bedroom is placed on the first floor as my mother wanted a separate floor to herself. Therefore , the master bedroom remains on the first floor. There is just one kitchen in the house as my father dint want two kitchens. Due to the dynamics between my mother and grand mother we had shifted to the above floor. Also the kitchen, ding and lounge have a three way interaction as these are the most used places in the house. And these are the places where mostly everyone is entertained.

AIM To make the bubble diagrams of the following rooms• Entrance lobby • Drawing Room • Dining Room • Family Lounge • Master bedroom • Siblings Room • Den • Guest bedroom • Kitchen • Utility Each bedroom is made in the form of a bubble, the size of the bubble depends on the significance and size of the room. All the bubbles are then joined in such a way that the location is also indicated as well as which room should be near which room. Adjacency ration is thoroughly taken in consideration to make bubble diagrams.

PROCESS The arrows underneath show the adjacency of rooms and what activity should be close to which other activity and what should be there adjacent to each other Direct Contact Indirect Contact

LEARNING OUTCOME • How to make different relationships of spaces keeping in mind how the family lives . • Choosing and deciding which relationship format works the best. • Not every aspect of the required space relationships can be fulfilled due to space constraints.

OPTION 1 Pros • •

A three way interaction between kitchen, living and dining. Family lounge on the first floor.

Cons • • •

Placement of powder room. Master bedroom far from the kitchen. Grandparent’s room in the public areas of the house.

OPTION 3

Pros • •

Public areas on the ground floor. Proper interaction between the living and dining area.

Cons • • •

Grandparent’s room on the first floor. Kitchen far from the master bedroom. Formal lounge far from grandparent’s room

OPTION 2

Pros • •

Grandparent’s room near to public area. Clear distinguishing between public and private areas.

Cons • • •

Placement of the guest bedroom. Placement of the powder room. Placement of grandparent’s room.

ZONING

To make the sectional division of all the rooms and divide them accordingly on the ground floor and first floor of the house and on the basis of bubble diagram of individual rooms and whole house. It does not state the positioning of the rooms. It is only bubbles representing rooms and staircase and how we divide it on the 2 floors according to our design brief and adjacency ratio. I thought of the position of the master bedroom in the beginning and then made the bubble of it in the ground floor. My master bedroom however was placed on the first floor as my mother prefers a complete floor to herself. The powder room should also be near the entrance, thus it came on the ground floor. The utility is also near the kitchen. • The family lounge shares adjacency to the sibling's room, the master bedroom and the pantry. It’s on the first floor. The staircase needs to be near the lounge so that it is easily accessible from the den and the master bedroom. • Also the dining, living area, and kitchen became overlapping spaces as they were placed together for a better interaction. • Elaborate thinking about the placement of spaces according to adjacency ratios. • Compromising on few adjacencies due to space constraints of the given plot.

To locate the rooms in the form of bubbles only on the ground floor and the first floor keeping in mind the -The direction of poles -The climatic changes -The direction of wind flow -The seasonal changes -Adjacency ratios of rooms -Bubble Diagram of whole house -Sectional Zoning • Made various zoning options for a better design. • Elaborate thinking about the placement of spaces according to adjacency ratios. • Compromising on few adjacencies due to space constraints of the given plot.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT STAGE The next step after understanding the zoning of the rooms is to understand the arrangement of furniture in each room. Thus we made the furniture arrangements for each room to understand the exact space requirements of each kind of furniture with its circulation space. Then the spatial division was done by placing the walls. Also making different layouts of the design in order to understand the it’s correct orientation. • The zoning for the layout designs were different and are seen in the designs only. • The matters that were kept in mind while zoning the plans were taken in consideration • After doing the zoning that is locating the space for each room , the furniture arrangement that suits the design brief were placed. • The furniture arrangement should suit the room in the best way possible. • Then the rooms were divided with the walls and also the type of wall was considered as the level of transparency through the wall is related to the privacy and connection of rooms. • The beams and columns to be integrated with the wall such that they don’t look inappropriate. • After the walls the type of doors were decide with reasoning. • Also explored the different kinds of staircase. Understanding the arrangement of spaces and the allocation of areas as per the functional and aesthetical aspects. Also looking at factors such as circulation and clearances. Also considering the doors and openings in the design process.

DESIGN APPROACH When I started with the design brief I analysed that the problems in my existing house and understood the characteristics that should be considered while locating the rooms in the house along with the furniture placement. The design brief also made me understand the purpose and privacy requirement of each room. The adjacency ration was like a graph that told me the percentage of closeness of the rooms. It also told me the relationship between the rooms. The usage of rooms at what time of the day also cleared me on the adjacency ratio. The ratio has been considered throughout the deign process. Bubble diagrams gave a form to the adjacency ratio and also determined the connection of one room to the other to the rest. It is like a chain that moved either in circular motion or connected the rooms. the bubble diagram made me define the entrance to the room. The placement and adjacency of room according to its space requirements. And made layouts of the plans to understand furniture placements and circulation along with clearances.

OPTIONAL LAYOUTS

Pros

Pros

Pros

• •

• •

A three way interaction between kitchen, living and dining. A linear circulation path with a long entrance lobby.

Cons • • • • •

A narrow entrance lobby. Utility on the front face of the house. Narrow entry to grandparent’s room. Working of the kitchen triangle. No circulation behind the dining table.

A bay window with attached dining. A breakfast booth in the kitchen for better interaction. Bifurcated movement after the entrance passage.

Cons • • •

L-shaped powder room. Grandparent’s room in the corner of the house. Utility on the front face of the house.

• • •

A central courtyard for bifurcated movement. A G-shaped kitchen with a breakfast corner and kitchen garden. Staggered entry to my Grandparent’s room. A separate formal lounge on the first floor. A proper sitting under the stairs.

Cons • • • •

Kitchen placed far from the master bedroom. A narrow entrance lobby. A small dining area. A narrow kitchen passage.

Pros • The staircase is in the centre of the house, thus accessible from all the spaces and since it is along with a double height space it does not create a communication barrier. • The deck is in the south of the house such that it has sufficient heat and sunlight in winters. • The kitchen is adjacent to the dining room and staircase providing ease of circulation. • The master bedroom is on the north east direction which does not have too much heat and stays cool normally because of the cold breeze flowing. It also has a nice view of the garden. • My room is in the south east direction having sufficient light for my study space and on the other hand is not too hot because of the cool breeze flowing. • The guest room is in the north west which has sufficient sunlight and a nice view of the garden. • The utility room is on the west such that the hot breeze will help in drying of clothes. • The siblings room is in the south west direction which has maximum sunlight for study space.

Cons • The deck space in the south will have a lot of heat in summers as well thus the kitchen will remain hot in summers. • The family lounge is not on the ground floor thus there is no family space on the ground floor. • The siblings room being on the south west generally stays hot thus the consumption of energy is high in that room.

SUN PATH DIAGRAM Analyzed the given site on the basis of given parameters on a single section. Figuring out the path of the winter and summer sun. Making note of the response to sun path. Indicating the drive way and acoustics. Marking of the north.

AIM Make a paper model of both the ground floor and first floor on the scale of 1:100 exploring all the openings and elevations taking cues from the reference images selected for design development.

PROCESS • Making a model out of paper and drawing elevations on it • Making extensions like balconies and bay windows to check for alignment in design.

LEARNING OUTCOME • Converting a 2D into a 3D form gives one a better sense of space and hence make corrections if needed. • Understanding the alignment of spaces. • Avoiding awkward protrusions in spaces which was not evident in 2D.

ANALYSIS OF SITE AIM To analyze the design and developing relationship between public and private spaces, understanding the movement and clearances, form and space, sun path, access and principles of design.

PROCESS • • • •

To understand the spaces based on public and private relationship. To understand the movement, clearances and access of the space. To understand the principle of design of the over all space and each area. To understand the orientation and also the placement of the doors and openings.

LEARNING OUTCOME Understanding the design layout and analyzing the space according to the above mentioned aspects.

PUBLIC SEMI-PRIVATE PRIVATE

A clear linear circulation pattern and a bifurcated movement that creates multiple-passage.

PROXIMITY The kitchen has been put on the ground floor where as the master bedroom is on the first floor. As my mother wanted a separate floor to herself the master bedroom has been put on the first floor. The access to the kitchen is easy from the first floor as my mother comes down whenever required however, the distance is not the most appropriate one. Kitchen, dining and lounge have a three way interaction.

FORM AND SPACE The house has been designed keeping in mind proper circulation patterns and movement. There is a lot of balance and rhythm in the house. There is also a lot of symmetry and harmony. The courtyard becomes the central emphasis of the house.

SUN PATH AND OPENINGS Morning sun entering the sun and family lounge area and the central courtyard receiving natural light from the skylight. Grandparent’s room receiving morning winter sun and natural light received by almost all parts of the house.

FINAL RENDERED PLAN To render the final plan on photoshop highlighting the spaces along with visual references. • • •
