THE ARMCUFF T
he armcuff is inspired by the combination of the ongoing trend Afrofuturism and Christian Cowan’s Autumn Winter 2018 Collection. Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic, philosophy of science, and philosophy of history that explores the developing intersection of African/African Diaspora culture with technology. In other words, its a freighted concept in more ways than one, it gained traction in last few years, muscling its way into the pop cultural mainstream via the intertwined worlds of entertainment, art and style. Some of the designs in Christian Cowan’s collection stands out for its metal “watch” buckle-fastening.

“Many women [who wear] black power are adhering to the culture, others for political attitude, but there are also those who wear it simply because it is stylish and on point,” says Danielle Cipriane, founder of blog Crespos e Cachos ('frizz and curls'). In Brazil, afros and other natural curl hair styles are commonly referred to as black power, and according to Cipriane, "black power’s popularity is beginning to challenge the Brazilian notion that straight [hair] is beautiful.”
From emerald to mint and all shades inbetween, green continues to be a key colour. Swarovski's 2019 Gem Visions sees this colour as key shade for Millennials due to its associations with the environment. In line with this environmental theme, ethically sourced emeralds are a musthave as stated in WGSN A/W 2019.
In the September issue of W magazine, Rihanna was cast as Tomorrow, an otherworldly warrior queen and champion of the downtrodden, resplendent in diamonds and foil.
TREND ANALYSIS I
n part, Afrofuturism, an aesthetic dating roughly from the 1970s, has taken on a new public face through a new generation of recording artists — Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott and Janelle Monáe among them — who have given it not only a voice, but also a look. You will likely know it when you see it: a high-shine mash-up of cyborg themes, loosely tribal motifs, android imagery and gleaming metallics that might be appropriate for a voyage to Pluto’s outer reaches.

In 2018, Afrofutur ism will see perhaps its greatest global stage yet with the launch of Marvel's new film, Black Panther . This is the first Marvel film with a black lead and predominantly black cast, and features costumes inspired by Maasai culture.
