FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS It’s no secret that I love animals. When

“Being the best at whatever talent you have, that's what stimulates life. – Tom Landry

you scroll through my personal social media pages, you’ll stumble upon photos of all of the animals at my house (there are a lot of them!), including the two stars of the show, my Great Danes, Zoey and Zeus. And it’s not just me who loves these gentle giants, my wife and kids adore them just as much as I do. It’s easy to see why the August issue, our annual pet edition, is one of my favorite issues of the year. From seeing the client pet photos submitted for our Pet Parade section to all of the resourceful articles that celebrate our local, pet-centric businesses, it’s the perfect magazine for anyone who loves and lives with pets in San Joaquin County. In the feature, we even highlight hotspots throughout the region where your four-legged friends are welcomed with open arms, and sometimes even pampered, too. This issue we celebrate a cause near and dear to my own heart—rescue dogs. The dogs throughout our feature story come from the Delta Humane Society. While some of the pooches may have been picked up by the time this issue hits the stands, it’s possible a few of these guys still need a home, and we’re urging readers to contact the shelter to adopt one. In addition to the dogs we feature, there are hundreds of other adoptable dogs available at shelters throughout San Joaquin County. Visit the Delta Humane Society, PALS Haven, Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary, Lodi City Animal Shelter, or Stockton Animal Shelter to find your next best friend. Adopt Don’t Shop—it’s the motto. LAST THOUGHTS CELEBRATING THE FRUITS OF OUR COUNTY It’s a labor of love for sure, tending to all of the luscious grapes that grow throughout the Lodi AVA. We’ve always celebrated the zins in the region with fervor, but lately Lodi has started paying more attention to those lesserknown varietals that our region rocks at producing. In August the spotlight is on Albariño, a white varietal that originally hails from Spain. The hot, hot climate here, however, is also the perfect place for turning out bottles of the unusually light, botanical white wine. We highlight some of our favorites in our Wine Dine section this month.

IMPRESSIVE TEENS Every month we celebrate some of the most spectacular humans that we are lucky enough to call our neighbors. I am always most excited, however, when we get to shine that spotlight on a younger star. This month we’re looking at two, Jamar and Jadyn Marshall, brothers who are taking the nation by storm with their athletic ability and competitive spirit.

PUPS with a PURPOSE THE THERAPY DOG PROGRAM AT ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL SPREADS JOY TO PATIENTS IN NEED  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER / D

DAN HOOD

The motto for St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton is “Hello Human Kindness,” but the truth is, it’s not just humans spreading kindness—the facility gets a little help from their four-legged friends. In 2013, the hospital launched its therapy dog program and since then dogs have been working the halls to help care for St. Joseph’s patients. And science backs up the practice; studies show that humans undergo immeasurable changes while interacting with a trained therapy dog. The purpose of the therapy dog program at St. Joseph’s is to provide patients with relief from loneliness and anxiety while providing mental stimulation for those suffering from brain injuries. It can also act as a catalyst in the therapy process

community staff and patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Annually, over 32,000 individuals, including staff and patients, are touched by the care of therapy dogs. McElroy’s vision for the program is to show the world that it isn’t about what breed a dog is. At SJMC, the therapy dog team includes a Dutch shepherd, doberman, border collies, a Havanese, English bulldogs, and so many others. To be a therapy dog you must be willing to approach strangers and seek affection from them. This is not a teachable characteristic—it’s an innate trait. It is also vital that the dogs are obedient and highly socialized. The K-9 team is eager to expand, so if you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the program, reach out. Just remember, all SJMC therapy dogs pass testing requirements and are registered with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, a national organization. Qualified applicants do a walk through at the hospital with McElroy to assure the dog performs well in an acute hospital health care setting, which is different than a retirement home or convalescent setting. And if it’s a good fit, you can begin spreading the canine kindness and compassion to patients in need of a smile. between doctors and patients. This powerful program has grown to include 10 human handlers and 11 canine volunteers. These animals spend their volunteer days walking the halls of the hospital and stopping to say hello to anyone that looks curious. Sometimes a staff member needs a little fuzz therapy to perk them up, or maybe the dogs perform tricks for children waiting in the lobby. And often, the day includes posing for pictures with people. Volunteer handlers tend to spend extra time in their favorite parts of the hospital. One handler has an affinity for volunteering in the cancer ward, many enjoy spending time comforting children in pediatrics, and others prefer time spent in the ER. Regardless of the department, the dogs roam looking for anyone needing a smile. For a dog, it’s a pretty good gig. Leo is one of the 11 volunteer therapy dogs that roam St. Joseph’s, an adorable 100-pound Goldendoodle (a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle) with a colorful hairdo. He delights people with his giant fluffiness and good-natured personality. For his handler, Gabby DiBattista-Capadona, it has been a life

changing experience. Her connection to the hospital is a personal one. Both of her grandparents spent significant amounts of time at St. Joseph’s and she got to know the staff that provided their care. After her grandfather passed away, she found a way to give back to the facility that cared for the people she loved most. “I volunteer because I want to make people happy and how can you not be happy spending time with Leo?” Capadona says. “He’s warm, inviting, and people smile when they see him coming.” For her, the reward is when she hears a patient or family member say, “That’s just what I needed today,” after a visit from Leo. But it isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. Didi McElroy, St. Joseph’s volunteer service coordinator, admits that many of the dogs seem emotionally exhausted after a long shift at the hospital. “Our dogs take particular note of people that are in pain, crying, scared, and nervous,” McElroy says. “They want to comfort those people. They empathize with patients and take on people’s emotions.” Since its inception, the therapy program has had a tremendous impact on the

HOW to TRAIN your DOG  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Choosing a new best friend is a big step for anyone.

Top Commands to Teach “All dogs should know the basic commands,” says Kathy, owner of the Canine Culture with her husband Jack. The top words to teach, according to the expert duo, are sit, down, stay, come, off, and leave it. Knowing how to walk appropriately on a leash is also important.

You need compatibility, shared interests, and specific characteristics to be a true match. And once you’ve brought a new dog home— whether it’s a puppy or an older dog—you might find it takes some time to learn how to get along. A little training can go a long way. We reached out to The Canine Culture to pick Jack and Kathy Weber’s brains on the best ways to train a dog, from basic commands to common myths. Read on to learn more.

26

5 Tips for Fido 1. Don’t expect a young puppy to endure a training session that is 30 minutes or longer. They are unable to focus for more than a few minutes at any one time. 2. Start socialization early. Never wait until a dog shows signs of problems to start training.

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019

3. Keep training fresh in “Our focus is on helping dogs and people learn to live together harmoniously. We firmly believe that 90 percent of the dogs that end up needing a new home is due to a lack of understanding about the culture which is unique to dogs and so very different than their human counterparts,” Kathy Weber, Owner, The Canine Culture

the dog’s mind by asking the dog to do something for you each day. 4. Never, ever, hit or kick your dog. Anger never produces the desired result and can cause injury or longlasting complications. 5. Train children how to properly interact with dogs. Never allow them to chase, hug, tug, or pull on the dog. Children should always walk, not run, near the dog and try to encourage them to not use loud, high-pitched voices.

Tips for Owners 1. Be assertive and understanding, without becoming dominant. 2. Begin training at an appropriate age.

3. Default to positive reinforcement.

When to Seek Professional Help All dogs should have professional obedience training, Kathy says. Experts suggest starting classes around 16-weeks-old, when a puppy is old enough to focus during class. However, it’s important not to wait too long. The best bet is to get dogs into training before they hit one year old. CALL FOR BOARDING & OBEDIENCE OPTIONS: CANINE CULTURE 9751 N. Highway 99, Stockton (209) 931-0758 CanineCulture.com

GBR is different from many Lodi farms for this reason: much of the 130acre farm’s yield goes to local restaurants here and John Gibson named Golden in the Napa Valley, not Bear Farms as a nod to his packing facilities. When he started ten years ago, John had about ¼-acre of farmland and 60 percent of his crops went out for samples to get business. By season two, John had 15-20 restaurants ordering. If you’ve ever had a peach arugula salad at Rosewood, an heirloom tomato salad at Pietro’s, topped a waffle at Towne House with seasonal fruit compote, or ordered a Gordito Pie from Market Tavern, it’s likely you’ve tasted the fruits of Golden Bear’s labor. “If you eat local, that is the most important thing. I think that’s more important than eating certified organic,” John says. That’s partly because when restaurants use local fruits they are picked two days before consumption, not two weeks, and are higher in nutrients. And the biggest compliment John gets from clientele is this: “They taste like the ones I had as a kid from our backyard.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

John Gibson, owner and farmer of Golden Bear Ranches in Lodi, has long harbored a love for agriculture. While attending Cal Berkeley to play football, he was also working toward a degree in agricultural history. After a career-ending injury, his dreams of becoming a farmer began to come into focus. “As young as I could remember I always wanted a farm,” says John. John’s first venture was cherries. With a short, grueling harvest season of 15-hour days, many farmers shy away from the fickle crop. John, however, had already been conditioned for this life, not so much from the days spent as a kid on his grandmother’s farm but really from the football schedule he had kept since high school. You see, as John explains it, putting in 15 hours every day for several months (cherry season

runs about four to six weeks) is exactly how football players operate. And 11 months of prep for one month of harvest, well, that’s much like pre-season work leading into game time. Despite calling them temperamental, and a devastating 2019 cherry season that left Golden Bear without 40 percent of its crop, John still says, “There’s nothing better than cherries.” In addition to cherries, John also farms tomatoes, stone fruit,

ALLERGIES & YOUR PET WHAT TO DO WHEN FIDO ITCHES Just like people, our pets can react to allergens in their environment or diet. If your pets are constantly licking, biting, or scratching at themselves, they might be dealing with allergies. Here’s how to recognize if your pet has allergies—and what to do about it. Allergies, whether in people or pets, are a result of the immune system overacting to an otherwise benign stimulus. Often signs of allergies will appear by the time your pet is a few years old, but sometimes allergies seem to appear later in life and out of nowhere. Instead of the sneezing and wheezing (though this can also happen sometimes) that people often experience, pets’ allergies typically affect the skin. Signs of an allergic reaction include excessive itching, licking, hair loss, and other signs of skin irritation known as allergic dermatitis. Allergies might also affect your pet’s ears as scratching leads to swelling or secondary infection. This is most common with dogs and you’ll notice a lot of head shaking as a result.

Seasonal Allergies Tree, grass, and weed pollens can set off your pet’s seasonal allergies, as can mold spores and mildew, which can be present year round. If possible, limit your pet’s exposure to these allergens by changing the route you walk to avoid high allergen areas with trees and grasses. Frequent baths and house cleaning can be effective in providing allergy relief as they help keep allergens to a minimum.

Food Allergies Your pet can develop an allergy to almost any protein or carbohydrate in their food. Dairy products, beef, wheat gluten, chicken, chicken eggs, lamb, and soy are common culprits of a dog’s food allergies, while cats most often will react to proteins such as beef, pork, chicken, or turkey. Food allergies typically

cannot be relieved with medical treatment, so you will instead need to focus on determining what food ingredient your pet is reacting to by changing the diet. It can take up to 12 weeks of a hypoallergenic diet before all the allergens are out of your pet’s system and there is symptom relief, so have patience.

Flea or Insect Allergies Both cats and dogs can have exaggerated reactions to flea, spider, tick, ant, or other insect bites. This type of allergy is most commonly caused by flea saliva and is usually characterized by itching or biting to the point of hair loss at the site of the bite. The best treatment is prevention. Pets should always be kept up-to-date with flea and tick treatments. Your vet may prescribe topical creams for temporary relief if needed. Keep an eye out for bee stings, too. Some pets have similar reactions as people, swelling near the site of a sting—and sometimes excessively.

GARDENING & GIVING BACK UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC ’S ROBB GARDEN

 BY MEGAN MEINTASIS Take a stroll across the University of Pacific’s breathtaking Stockton campus and you just might spot the enchanting Ted & Chris Robb Garden. Step inside the beckoning gates to this picturesque oasis where visitors come for inspiration and education, and students, faculty, and members of the community alike seek a peaceful retreat. Although an undeniably beautiful space to walk around on campus, its roots and purpose run deeper. “The garden was started with sustainability in mind,” says Jessica Bilecki, supervisor of the garden and director of sustainability at UOP. “It’s a space where students and members of the community can learn firsthand about the connection between how our food is grown and the impact it makes on our bodies and the planet.” Created to be an experiential demonstration of how food is grown organically and sustainably, former regent Walter Robb made it possible for select garden interns to study GROW BIOINTENSIVE® techniques at Ecology Action in Willits. These principles are part of the campus garden. Pamela Eibeck, President of the University, says it best: “Our gardens bring together students, faculty, staff, and the community. Workshops focusing on the basics of sustainable gardening, such as how to start seeds, transplant, prune, and more, are offered periodically in the garden and open to anyone who wants to learn. The garden is also the perfect spot to sit and delight the senses with the surrounding beauty of colorful plants and flowers, the calming sounds of chirping birds and buzzing bees, and the succulent fragrance that can only be found in a summer vegetable garden. Benches designed by University art students and made from fallen campus redwoods sit in the heart of the garden to offer the perfect lookout spot. You may even be greeted by a couple of entertaining ducks that occasionally enjoy stopping by for an afternoon waddle across the garden.

FAMILY HURDLES

BROTHERS AT ST. MARY’S HIGH SCHOOL WIN STATE

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D

PONNIE JACKSON

Jamar Marshall, 17, and his brother Jadyn, 15, have been collecting track and field titles across the country for years now. With countless accolades under their belts—including Jamar’s recent state record-breaking 110m high hurdles run at the California State Track & Field meet this spring—the two brothers from Saint Mary’s High School are hurdling toward success, one race at a time. “I already have my mind made up that I want to go to college for track and one day make it to the Olympics,” Jadyn says. “I do not want to be a average runner who does average things. I want to find things that can separate me from someone else.” The secret to these boys’ success is each other. “Competition versus my brother is great for me because I have the best training partner in the country,” Jadyn says. “I look up to him as an athlete because I aspire to be better than him.” Jamar adds, “We have always been competitive with each other, by comparing times, touch downs, and points. Who is going to have bragging rights in the house?” The boys’ track coach at St. Mary’s, Myke Lewis, sees the boys’ relationship firsthand. “Coaching them is a joy,” he says. “It’s different. You have

two of the most fierce competitors living in the same household.” That sibling rivalry, he says, builds a different bond than other athletes. Jamar and Jadyn started their track and field careers at 10 and 9 years old respectively. Both settled into hurdles when they realized they weren’t going to be the best runners on a team—a solid plan for two young men who pride themselves on being the best. “I would barely make finals [in running],” Jamar shares. “So, my mom asked me would I like to try hurdles.” The boys’ mom went all in, crafting hurdles out of PVC pipe she bought from Home Depot, and introducing Jamar to a friend of hers who had competed in track at a collegiate level. Her hard work has paid off. Jamar and Jadyn have been racking up awards ever since. At 10 years old Jamar ran the 80m hurdles against 11 and 12 year olds and placed 5th in his

BOXWOOD FINCH CELEBRATES THREE YEARS IN LODI  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D Looking for fragrant home candles? Plush, plump throw

pillows? Fine, handmade jewelry? Seasonal décor from local makers? Boxwood Finch is a go-to destination for all of this, and more. And in August, the lifestyle store located in the heart of Lodi is celebrating three years in business. Events including pop-ups and sidewalk sales, new inventory, and additional business ventures have kept Boxwood Finch evolving. “This year we have taken on quite a few new lines in the store, and are very excited to include more custom-painted furniture in the fall,” Amanda Denton, co-owner of Boxwood Finch, says. New lines include Elizabeth W San Francisco, a San Francisco-based

company featuring products that are made solely in the United States. And the store continues to find success with local staples Sargent Road, a Lodi company known for its food-grade wood boards and furniture pieces, and Crunchy Mama Bear, a local seller specializing in all-natural goods. “We have also continued to collaborate with local businesses for really epic Instagram giveaways and popups in our store,” Amanda says. “We recently worked with Huckleberry Blooms and had her do a floral installation inside the store that was really beautiful.” Supporting local businesses is just one piece of Boxwood Finch’s mission to better the community. On September 13 and 14, Boxwood Finch will host a sidewalk sale to commemorate three years of selling wares in Lodi. The charitable event will follow the same format as last year with racks of décor and other home goods set outside on Lockeford Street, sold at discounted prices. The items sold during this event arrived damaged from the manufacturer and Boxwood Finch was allowed

A love of home décor and creating interesting spaces has led Amanda and Pamela to a new venture—Boxwood Staging. to keep them at no cost. Throughout the year the mother-daughter team behind Boxwood sets these pieces aside to sell annually during a sidewalk sale with all proceeds benefiting a charity of their choice, and Boxwood Finch matches the proceeds. Through the sale, the business supports sustainability, a cause important to both Amanda and her mother, Boxwood Finch co-owner Pamela Snell, while also giving back to the local community.

Avenue Grill

This long-running establishment in the heart of Lodi has been serving up sweet and savory goodness to the community for over 23 years. This place welcomes a steady stream of regulars that fill up the small café in a jiffy, making for a full house most days. But at Avenue Grill you can count on three things: you will always be greeted with a smile, your coffee will never be empty, and you won’t leave hungry! From the carnitas quesadilla to the potato platter and pancakes the size of Texas, the breadth of dishes on the menu leaves guests pleansantly surprised. Editor’s Pick: The potato platter is a behemoth of goodness. The dish is a heaping platter of country style potatoes mixed with grilled ham, bacon, bell peppers, onions, and smothered in melty cheese. Add an egg and all the hot sauce to take it this dish to the next level. 506 W. Lodi Ave., Lodi

Bud’s Seafood Grille

You may not even realize that Stockton’s reigning seafood haven makes a killer Sunday brunch. With a newly renovated dining room and comfortable seating, Bud’s is one of the best places to have a breakfast date. From sourdough French toast served with scrambled eggs and Canadian bacon, to a variety of scrambles and omelets, Bud’s is making the most of breakfast. They also offer a full bar, so be sure to order a spicy Bloody Mary to finish your meal. Editor’s Pick: Have the crab cake eggs benedict. The fresh flaky cake is topped with perfectly poached eggs and drizzled with creamy hollandaise sauce. 314 Lincoln Center, Stockton

Denis’ Country Kitchen

This bustling family eatery consistently has long lines that reach around the building’s corner, and they aren’t new to the business— they’ve been dishing up hearty, American-style breakfasts for over 20 years. All the breakfast favorites include either hash browns or country potatoes and guests’ choice of a pancake, toast, cottage cheese with a peach, or biscuits and gravy. Regulars love the steak and eggs, Joe’s Special, and the south of the border omelet. Editor’s Pick: My all-time favorite item on the menu is Denis’ Gyro Omelet. Owner and second-generation chef, Denis Xenos, whips up a satisfying omelet with three farm-fresh eggs, Greek beef and lamb gyro meat, feta cheese, and fresh tomatoes. Can you say “opa”? 1327 W. From the chef’s souffle pancake with stone fruit compote to the signature housemade granola, there is something for everyone at Towne House. If you make your reservation ahead of time, request to sit on the picturesque patio overlooking the gardens where you’ll feel a million miles away from home. Editor’s Pick: The smoked salmon scramble is the perfect savory start to any day. The Omega-3s in the smoked salmon paired with the cream cheese scrambled eggs and hash browns create the perfect balanced breakfast. 2505 W. Turner Rd., Lodi

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Richmaid Restaurant

This place is practically an institution in Lodi. Established in 1938, generations upon generations of families have dined here. The current owners took over in 1998 and have been serving happy customers ever since. They cook up homestyle breakfasts reminiscent of the ones your mom used to make and all the sauces are made in-house. Editor’s Pick: This might sound simple, but the Chili Omelet is scrumptious. Titled Gary’s Firehouse Chili and Cheddar Omelet, it’s also one of the biggest plates on the menu. Cooked to perfection with homemade chili and melty cheddar cheese, you can thank me later. 100 S. Cherokee Ln., Lodi

Bob’s at the Marina

The ultimate in casual waterfront dining, Bob’s at the Marina has been serving breakfast lovers in Stockton for decades. With everything from linguica and eggs, to flapjacks and omelets, the portions are plentiful, and the flavor is mighty. We love the spin on the traditional French toast, crafted from four of the thickest slices of sourdough bread you’ve ever seen. After soaking the slices in a secret concoction, the bread hits the grill then gets topped off with powdered sugar. The chef then slaps it on an oversized plate and serves it with melted butter and syrup. Editor’s Pick: The chicken fried steak is excellent. Crispy, moist chicken is served alongside two eggs and doused with homemade sausage-based country gravy. It’s a combination of goodness that should always be enjoyed after a night of imbibing. 6639 Embarcadero Dr., Stockton

Town & Country Café

This small storefront eatery offers daytime breakfast in comfy digs for the family to enjoy. Try Claudia’s Benedict that is served with fresh avocado and goat cheese, the breakfast BLT, or the gooey cinnamon rolls. They also offer up mimosas and Bloody Marys for the perfect boozy breakfast pairing. Editor’s Pick: You can’t go wrong with the fluffy French toast served with farm fresh strawberries and blueberries. This dish is piled high and finished with real maple syrup for an amazing sweet-on-sweet flavor. 27 W. 10th St., Tracy

The Farm Café at Michael David Winery

One of Lodi’s leading breakfast spots is the Farm Café at Michael David. Be prepared to arrive early or wait for a table because this place is popping each day of the week. But don’t worry, it’s totally worth it. From Huevos Rancheros to pancakes and seasonal omelets, the Café is busy pumping out dish after delectable dish. And while you wait, you can peruse the farm stand, sample some of the incredibly tasty pastries, or take a walk around the beautifully manicured winery grounds. Editor’s Pick: The chicken and waffles are off-the-chart delicious. The combination of savory fried chicken paired with the sweet and fluffy waffles is tough to beat, and that crunchy, crispy, chicken with maple syrup is a thing to love and savor. 4580 W. The Downtowner

Chuck’s Hamburgers

Yes, we know it’s called Chuck’s Hamburgers, but this place has been pumping out dynamite breakfast dishes for what seems like an eternity. And while their location changed a few years back, the breakfast is still as tasty as can be! From pancakes the size of a plate to corned beef and hash, Chuck’s dishes up serious eats for the breakfast connoisseur. And if you love country sausage gravy—this is your place! Editor’s Pick: Order the chicken fried steak with sunny side up eggs and hash brown potatoes. If you finish this, you won’t need to order lunch. 5939 Pacific Ave., Stockton

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

The goal at the Downtowner is to deliver comfort food with a healthy twist, and that’s exactly what they do. Staff serves up good mood food that tastes great, but without all the guilt that accompanies the traditional American breakfast. Take, for example, the V Burrito, showcasing a tofu scramble, black beans, avocado smash, roasted peppers, Daiwa pepper jack cheese, and a house-made pico de gallo. And while they also have a delicious breakfast burger and chicken and waffles, the vegetarian dishes really steal the show at this establishment. Editor’s Pick: The avocado toast here is for real. The avocado is adorned with cherry tomatoes, spring mix, a house made aioli, and a balsamic reduction, piled on a soft slice of Genova sourdough. 40 N. Sutter St., Stockton

America Waffles

This Stockton foodie favorite recently won SJ Mag’s annual category of Best Waffle. And while the waffles are undoubtedly to die for, guests can step the menu item up with a waffle burger or fried chicken with bacon waffles. We also want to devour the smoked salmon eggs benedict and flavorful Greek omelet every time we stop in. The bottom line—America Waffle serves up tasty dishes with gigantic portions alongside an assortment of mimosas, or even a bacon Bloody Mary. AW also recently added keto waffles to the menu, which is a huge plus for folks watching their carb intake. Editor’s Pick: Go bananas for the banana walnut waffle, a larger-than-life waffle topped with fresh slices of banana, local walnuts, and smothered in syrup. It oddly reminds of us indulging in a banana split—but for breakfast. 1540 E. March Ln., Suite B-5, Stockton

Midtown Creperie

In case you missed it, Midtown Creperie was once on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, so you know it has to be good. The restaurant brings a taste of the French Quarter to the Miracle Mile in Stockton. The New Orleans-themed establishment pumps out crepes, beignets, waffles, and omelets daily. But it was the beignets and gravy featured on Guy Fieri’s television show that has people talking. Picture this— two beignets topped with house-made sausage gravy. Yes, it’s completely indulgent and the ultimate combination of savory and sweet. Editor’s Pick: The dish that really tickles our fancy is the Pain Perdu, a New Orleans style French toast made with Stockton’s very own Genova bread. 2319 Pacific Ave., Stockton

West Oak Nosh

Since opening for breakfast on Saturday and Sundays, the German-inspired restaurant has been pumping out modern fare for local foodies. Where else in San Joaquin county can you savor a schnitzel and waffle breakfast? Or how about that loaded avocado toast? And don’t forget to sip on one of the sparkling splits. The best part is this establishment is fun, family-friendly, and delicious! Editor’s Pick: The build your own eggs benedict is the way to go. You get the best of everything they have to offer. Pick one of the house-made sausages as the base for this tasty eggs benedict, then layer the sausage, poached egg, rich hollandaise, and micro greens on an English muffin. 10 W. Oak St., Lodi

Corner Scone Bakery

This quaint corner spot is a like stepping back in time. A Victorian vibe and the wafting smell of baked cinnamon rolls greets you upon entering. Order your goodies at the counter and staff will deliver them to you in a jiffy! Corner Scone knows a thing or two about baking, and there is no shortage of items to choose from to kick off the morning. Select from freshly baked seasonal scones, muffins, hand pies, and quiches. And don’t forget the Temple Coffee too! Editor’s Pick: Without a doubt, the quiche is at the top of my list. Fluffy, creamy eggs are stuffed with fresh veggies, and baked in the flakiest pie crust around. 322 N. California St., Lodi

Dancing Fox Winery

This charming downtown restaurant and winery is famous for its Sunday brunch buffet. Loaded with everything from an omelet bar, country potatoes, eggs benedict, French toast, and house made pastries, there is a bite for even the pickiest eater here. Order a mimosa, down a beer, or sip on hot tea to accompany your meal. And if you can swing it, ask for a seat on the quaint patio. Editor’s Pick: It may not be breakfast exactly, but the bread pudding is served for the Sunday brunch, and you simply can not eat there without sampling this delicacy. Owner Colleen Lewis is a master baker and you can tell from the first bite. Its ooey, gooey, and worth the cheat day! 203 S. School St., Lodi

Adventuring with Man’s

Best Friend  BY

NORA HESTON TARTE

If your best friend has four legs and is furry, you may get turned away at the doors to some local hotspots, a hard pill to swallow for you and Fido. Lucky for

those living in San Joaquin County, for every place that says no to pets (and usually for good reason), there is another place shouting from the rooftops just how dog-friendly it is. So, whether you want to sip wine, enjoy a meal, go shopping, or hit the trails, there are plenty of places for you to do just that with dog in tow. Simply bring a leash and look over the lists below to find the best weekend and weekday outings for you and your best friend. SELECT PHOTOS: PONNIE JACKSON

WINERIES

Admit it—one of your favorite activities in Lodi is sipping local wines on expansive, manicured lawns; grabbing small bites from on-site food trucks or ordering from wineries with kitchens; playing a game of cornhole with friends; and enjoying late summer afternoons in the shade of oak trees. We can almost guarantee that those activities—maybe minus the wine sipping—appeal to your dog, too. And what better way to get them out of the house than by trekking down to one of Lodi’s nearly 100 wineries. Many wineries throughout the AVA allow leashed dogs on patios and outdoor areas. A couple may even let a non-working dog come inside. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite locations with lax dog rules, meaning as long as they are on-leash and well-behaved, the staff will welcome them inside, and perhaps even provide a bowl of water.

RESTAURANTS

Bringing a dog to a restaurant can have its challenges, particularly in the food theft category. But if your dog can handle sitting quietly during a meal—or even just a cup of coffee—then there is no reason not to bring them along— with the chef’s permission, of course. Many local eateries equipped with patios welcome dogs with open arms. Rules typically are that dogs must be leashed and courteous to other patrons. If your dog fits those two criteria, bring them along! Many places with patios will allow dogs on, but calling ahead is key. We’ve got you covered, however, on some dog-friendly places to save you the call. Check out some of our certified picks.

SHOPPING Downtown Lodi Taking your dog out for a stroll is extra nice when you can sneak in some shopping. In downtown Lodi some shops allow pets to stop in with owners, while others may require leashed pups to stay outside. Regardless or whether you need to tie your pup up for a few while you dip inside, downtown Lodi is extremely dog friendly with communal water bowls outside of several businesses downtown. Let your pup stop for a sip in between stops, and don’t forget to pick a pet-friendly restaurant from our list as part of the adventure.

Lincoln Center “We are super dog friendly,” says Tara Valone, marketing director of Lincoln Center. “Most of our tenants have water bowls outside for the animals.” Whether or not dogs are allowed inside is up to the individual merchant, but the outdoor patios and walkways are often teaming with dogs. In fact, the large patio outside of Starbucks, Noah’s, and Nothing Bundt Cakes is owned by the shopping center and very open to dogs of all sizes. You can even step into Lacquer and get your nails done with your well-behaved lap pooch some days. And many shops have their own resident shop dogs inside, including Ruby the Chihuahua at Flair Boutique and Harper at CR Porter. As you walk around the center, your pooch’s needs are met with water bowls outside of many of the stores and doggy clean-up bags available at the Gettysburg entrance.

PALS HAVEN EXPANSION

Every year PALS (People Assisting Lodi Shelter) Haven adopts out about 200 dogs from its Lodi location next to the Lodi City Animal Shelter. As a no-kill shelter, PALS is able to save the lives of many animals from kill shelters in town. However, its capacity has limited rescue efforts in the past with room for only about 12 dogs and 30 cats in the current facility. All of that changes in fall 2019 when PALS opens its new facility at 5113 W. Sargent Rd. Built with donor dollars, the 13,000-squarefoot, debt-free building will accommodate housing for 80 dogs and 100 cats. “The new facility will clearly allow us to adopt out more,” says Gail Matthews, administrative assistant for PALS Haven. The nonprofit organization will also be ramping up amenities at the new facility with play yards, a vet clinic, and a future education center. The goal is to make this new facility a community area for residents of Lodi, Gail says. Want to adopt a dog from PALS? Simply stop into the shelter during open hours, or call ahead.

WALL TO WALL Make Boring Walls Pop  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Drab walls? Ugh, no. There is nothing worse than a home with white-white walls in every room. Trade in those boring canvases for something that pops! New technology makes changing out wall colors and design easier than ever, so you’re not peeling old paper and coating colored walls in several layers of paint to make a difference. Read on to learn about our top picks for wall-makeovers that won’t break your bank or your back.

Wall Art

Don’t want to commit to a whole-room overhaul? Brighten a space with a big piece of art. “When hanging artwork always have the centerline of the piece at 60-65 inches,” says Kathleen Jennison, interior designer and owner of KTJ Design Co. “That’s the only rule you have to follow and it is perfect every time.” From high-end pieces from local galleries to grab-and-go art from local home décor shops, find a piece of art that speaks to you and hang it. Get it local: Some of out favorite home décor shops include Boxwood Finch, The Owl Box, CR Porter, and Nava & Co. Have a piece of art you already like? Refresh it with a new frame. McKinley’s Frame Shop creates custom frames for the art you love.

Removable Wallpaper

You may be asking yourself how removable wallpaper is any different from the paper you’ve been buying for years. Well, get ready to be amazed! The upside to this new trend in wall coverings is how easy it is to remove (and apply). Fitting into the “peel and stick” trend that’s hitting home stores all over, wallpaper is sold in pre-sized strips. Simply peel off the backing and hang the wallpaper up. When you’re done with it, peel it off. No more messy, time-consuming stripping. Expert Tip: Want to save time and money? Choose one wall to make your accent wall with new paper. It’s very “in” to have a statement wall in your home instead of covering every wall of a room with the same paper. This gives homeowners the opportunity to purchase bold wallpaper without worrying that it will overpower a room. 78

Paint

Paint of any color can add a little interest to a room. For the most impact, opt for a bold, bright color, or design element. “The days of painting the walls tan, the trims bright white, and the ceiling flat white are OVER!” Kathleen says. “Painting your room in this fashion will immediately date it.” Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, it’s not hard to achieve (and the cost of paint is pretty minimal). Go all over in sunshine yellow or lobster red, or use painter’s tape to create a diamond or stripe pattern on a wall. Again, you can limit the cost and time commitment by focusing on one wall instead of repeating the pattern on all four.

A Gallery Wall

Creating a gallery wall works well to cover a plain wall in your home. Add pizzazz by pulling favorite items you already own and pairing them with small pieces you can pick up throughout town. Gallery walls work best when they have special meaning. Choose items that speak to you, and add in personal photos and other design elements that you love or tell a story about your family.

Shelf Arrangements

Let’s go back to decorating walls instead of coating them floor-to-ceiling. Large photos aren’t for everyone, but there are other ways to cover walls with décor. Floating shelves are definitely in, and readily available at most home décor stores, local or not. Pick up a few— but create an interesting design with them instead of just throwing them on the wall.

A Central Coast Getaway Iconic Highway 1 is a gold mine for those looking to merge the beauty of the outdoors with the finer things in life. Set on California’s Central Coast, the Highway 1 Discovery Route winds through 10 artisan communities. In a long weekend, anyone can reasonably trek through the region’s northern half, stopping through beach towns, wine regions, and wildlife refuges. Follow our course through the northernmost cities— Cambria, Ragged Point, San Simeon, and Cayucos—to find adventure, authentic farm-to-table cuisine, awardwinning wine, and wide-open spaces worthy of your time.

HEARST CASTLE TOUR Sign up for a guided tour through the castle and its expansive grounds, designed by its original owner William Randolph Hearst, a publishing giant who passed away in 1951, and architect Julia Morgan. The mansion was under construction for several decades, and is now preserved as a registered landmark. Guided tours last about an hour, taking guests through the grounds. See the infamous Neptune Pool and the rooms where Hearst used to entertain guests, including prominent movie stars from the 1920s and 1930s. Lady Gaga even recorded a music video at the indoor pool a few years back. After the tour, guests are invited to stay and walk around as long as they like before catching a bus back to the station. If you look closely, you may even spot a zebra roaming the rolling hills as Hearst used to house a small zoo on the property.

LUNCH & WINE

San Simeon

Spend a day in San Simeon, between Ragged Point and Cambria. Here, Hearst Castle stands out as the landmark to see, while wide-open outdoor spaces make the ideal scenery for hiking and outdoor exploration. 84

Dine at SEBASTIAN’S while visiting San Simeon. The casual eatery is housed in the same building as HEARST RANCH WINERY—and they share an address—so you’ll be able to combine two activities in one (442 Slo San Simeon Rd.). Everything on the menu is divine at this counter-serve restaurant (with an outdoor patio), but we recommend the burger above all else. Let us warn you—it’s big! So bring your appetite. After you’ve demolished your meal, step five feet to your left for a wine tasting experience unlike any other. Downto-earth wine savants pour sips of Hearst Ranch Winery’s best varietals, and if you ask, they’ll even test your palette. The wines are produced from an estate vineyard in nearby Paso Robles and served in the tasting room, a historic 1852 building. While you’re there, you can catch glimpses of Hearst Castle and the Pacific Ocean from the deck where you sip.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019

WHERE TO STAY Tuck in at the CAVALIER OCEANFRONT RESORT, just three miles from Hearst Castle (9415 Hearst Dr.). The hotel rests on a scenic bluff overlooking the ocean and many rooms offer outdoor patios where guests can sit and enjoy the sound of crashing waves. Downstairs, an outdoor pool and hot tub are available to guests, just steps from the sandy beaches of San Simeon. Finish your night roasting marshmallows over an outdoor fireplace rooted in the sand. Grab an easy breakfast at the hotel before heading out the next morning.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Walk it off by visiting two of San Simeon’s best outdoor recreational areas. Start with a hike on Boucher Trail that winds past the PIEDRAS BLANCAS LIGHTHOUSE (15950 Cabrillo Hwy.). If you’d like to explore the lighthouse, see this gem on a tour. Tours of the lighthouse are offered daily 10 AM-12 PM through August 31, except on Wednesdays and Sundays. Close by, the Piedras Blancas ELEPHANT SEAL ROOKERY is a sight to see (Highway 1). On the coast, elephant seals rest in large packs throughout the area, resembling a less-urban Pier 39 in San Francisco.

Ragged Point

above the cliffs. Take a seat outside for the best views—and around the fire pits to stay warm. The ambiance is so inviting here you won’t want to leave. Make your meal last with multiple courses of farm-fresh cuisine, much of which is grown in on-site gardens. If the deck is full, the dining room still caters to those looking to catch a sunset at dinner with floor-to-ceiling windows all around. Before leaving the next morning, take a walk down to the beach; a set of wooden steps is just to the side of the restaurant. Walk as far as is comfortable to escape into the bluffs. Then, grab a quick breakfast on your way out at the espresso bar, located around back of RAGGED POINT RESTAURANT.

This is the ideal place for an easy day on your tour, and RAGGED POINT INN is where you should stop to rest your head after a day of exploring nearby beaches and trails (19019 CA-1). The scenery echoes what is seen in Big Sur, jagged rocks and daunting cliffs layered in fog most days of the year. At Ragged Point Inn, the hotel plays up the surrounding landscapes with outdoor decks and seating and an in-room fireplace. Expert Tip: You can always backtrack here after a day in Cambria. Check in for dinner where the gourmet, on-site restaurant offers fresh cuisine

Cambria LUNCH & PIE

Ragged Point Inn

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Fuel yourself for a day in Cambria by filling your belly. The first stop once you hit Cambria’s quaint downtown is LINN’S RESTAURANT (2277 Main St.). Linn’s started as a fruit stand in Cambria but has since turned into a local staple with several locations throughout Cambria. The lunch menu is packed with filling paninis, salads, and other farm-fresh foods, but the real draw is the pie. Linn’s olallieberry pie is what most people come in for, and if you’re curious just what an olallieberry is, well, the server will hand you a sheet that thoroughly explains how these fruits come to be. Hint: It’s by expertly mixing other berries together in some sort of agricultural science experiment. Grab a slice of homemade pie, fall in love, and then purchase every olallieberry product the store offers— from candy to tea, jams to dressings. Expert tip: Our second favorite pie here is the apple served al la mode.

WINE TASTING

PIZZA & PINOT

Pair the popular Central Coast varietal with a favorite cuisine. On August 18 from 1-3 PM at Stolo Family Vineyards, guests can chow down on artisan pies from Fire & Ice Catering while sipping handcrafted pinots by Stolo (and the estate rose).

Once you’ve readied yourself with a belly full of pie, it’s time to move on to the next tasting activity of the day. THE PACIFIC COAST WINE TRAIL represents six boutique wineries along the Central Coast, and you really can’t go wrong with any. First up, stop into MOONSTONE CELLARS just down the road from lunch (812 Cornwall St., Cambria). A bar made of old wine barrels acts as the centerpiece in the dog-friendly establishment. Editor’s Choice: Sip the 2018 Pink Elephineaux, a clever play on saying “Hell if I know.” This tempranillo rosé is fresh, light, and dry—not too sweet. Move on to CUTRUZZOLA VINEYARDS in Cambria’s West Village (555 Main St.). The reds and whites here are both divine, but the winery specializes in rieslings and pinot noirs. Wines are sourced from a local, Cambria vineyard near the

water where the cool climate caters to these varietals, and are served in the tasting room along with other sips from the label. A little way down the road sits STOLO FAMILY VINEYARDS, up a winding stretch into the hillside (3776 Santa Rosa Creek Rd.). The tasting room offers a cool place to try the vineyard’s line-up, plus an outdoor area for gathering with friends. Editor’s Choice: Dive into the pinot noirs and syrahs while you’re here; there are typically a couple of each available to taste. On Saturdays in August, the tasting room welcomes live music. If you want to try a little bit of everything, stop by FERMENTATIONS, a downtown wine bar located in Cambria’s East Village on the main stretch (2306 Main St.). Inside, a long list of wines is available to taste from 10 AM-8 PM daily, with an expert wine steward behind the bar to pour.

RIDE A CLYDESDALE

Look, I knew that horseback riding was a thing in most beach towns, but riding a Clydesdale? I didn’t even know you could do that before I visited Cambria. Tara Covell, 19, started COVELL’S CLYDESDALES on her parent’s farm at just 15 years old (5694 Bridge St.). Now, she provides group trail rides across the property as a business. Each ride starts with an introduction, making the excursion possible for those who have never even mounted a horse before, as well as those who are expert equestrians. Once you’ve been briefed on how to control the horse, you set off into the hills for a leisurely stroll (with some trotting when you feel comfortable).

THE SWEETS LIFE

Next up, treat yourself to a brown butter cookie at the BROWN BUTTER COOKIE COMPANY (98 N. Ocean Ave.). These delectable sweets come in a variety of flavors—may we recommend the coconut lime?—and samples are doled out generously to patrons so you know exactly what flavors to stock up on and take home. CAYUCOS CANDY COUNTER is the other sweet shop you’ll want to visit. A glass case filled with fresh-baked goodies is all the temptation you need to break that diet, and the ice cream flavors are the perfect indulgence on a hot day (75 Cayucos Drive). Expert Tip: Grab a cone before heading out on that pier walk.

GET your GRUB ON! AT PORTERS PUB  BY NORA HESTON TARTE/ D www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Let’s set the scene. It’s a warm summer day and you’re looking for a place to cool off and have a meal—perhaps a beer, too. Whether you’re venturing out by yourself, with the family, or with a group of friends, you find yourself at Porters Pub in Lodi. Step in to see patrons high-fiving, hugging staff, and telling jokes. There’s a line-up of regulars seated at the bar, drinking local brews while they chat. You are immediately greeted with a smile, and a menu.

local dish “The reason we survive and thrive,” says Shae Porter, co-owner of the restaurant. “We have so many customers that are not just once a week... they are truly regulars.” In fact, Shae points out, some people eat at Porters just about every day. Aside from the company, and the brother-sister team behind the pub (locals who grew up in Lodi), the fresh, seasonal menu pulls guests in off of School Street. That and an impressive list of thirteen craft beers on tap. Let’s just say there is a reason people keep coming back. “Everything we bring in is fresh,” Shae says. The meat is never frozen and everything is cooked in-house. Even the dressings, except for one, are made in-house. To keep things interesting, Porters changes up its menu twice per year. It’s an undertaking Shae personally handles so the menu always echoes what is happening in the surrounding community from the local harvest to seasonal festivals. While “pub” does accurately describe the casual nature of the eatery, don’t get too caught up on the word. What many don’t realize about Porters is that it offers a family-friendly environment for people who want to come in and have a meal, and perhaps a beer, even with kids in tow. It features a kid’s menu that caters to the youngest diners, and people can feel safe eating inside. If you’re wondering what to order while you’re here—well, there’s a reason this gem was crowned Best Wings on the 2019 San Joaquin Magazine Best Of list. “People have been raving about our wings since the get,” Shae says, adding it’s the freshness of the meat that makes the difference. The science behind it is this: when the wings are frozen they retain moisture. Cook them up fresh (tossed in flour and a delicious blend of seasonings) and they fry up nice and crispy in-

94

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019

stead. And if you ask the team at Porters, well, size matters. Every wing is large. No small wings here! The other big draw is the homemade chili. The award-winning recipe is best served over nachos, a delicacy regulars love to chow down on. And, if you’re looking for something lighter, you can’t go wrong with a panini. Porters Pub celebrates its newest menu addition by serving up inventive Panini du Jour—a Panini of the Day. “We have a really diverse menu,” Shae says. “We have a little bit of something for everyone.” If you’re over 21, wash it all down with a local brew. Porters Pub has only four taps that don’t rotate (Coors Light, Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat, 805, and Deschutes Black Butte Porter). The rest are constantly changing. “There are so many fantastic breweries out there,” Shae says. “Other than Coors Light all my taps are craft beer.” Most of the offerings are fairly local with sips from Sacramento and

San Diego making up a bulk of the menu. Favorites include truly local blends, too, like Morgan Territory out of Tracy. The first thing patrons want to know is what’s new, and if it’s local. Not sure when to stop by? Anytime is a good time—the restaurant is open 11 AM-9 PM Monday through Thursday, 11 AM-10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 AM-8 PM on Sundays—but happy hour serves the best deals. Stop by Monday through Friday from 2-6 PM for discounts on bar bites and brews. During football season and other major sporting events, like when the Giants and Dodgers play each other, happy hour runs all night. “Everyone comes in different jerseys, but there aren’t any fights,” Shae says. “You can feel safe bringing everyone in.”

ACCESSIBLE VINO THOMAS ALLEN WINERY  BY

NORA HESTON TARTE

Award winning wines at an unbeatable price—that’s what Thomas Allen Winery offers its guests. A refreshing bottle of pinot grigio from the winery recently earned 91 points from Wine Enthusiast magazine and was featured in the publication as one of the best wines from California. The surprising part is that it’s not unfathomably expensive to add this bottle to your collection. At Thomas Allen, the goal is to make wine sipping both enjoyable and accessible to everyone. Stop in for a tasting flight, a customizable line-up of favorites from Thomas Allen’s extensive and growing wine list. While each guest is greeted with a menu of available wines, there are no pre-determined flights. Guests can request all reds, all whites, or a blend of the two, or they can pick and choose their favorite five to sip. Stumped? Ask the bar master to make suggestions. The staff is knowledgeable in wines from not just their own vineyard, but others, too, making it easy to find favorites on the menu. Plus, they offer quality conversation as you sip at the inviting, wooded, u-shaped bar that makes gabbing with other vino lovers easy. The tasting room is new to Lodi—opened in 2018—but Thomas Allen wines are not. For years the vineyard was creating wines for sale under a few labels and selling grapes to other wineries, but in 2018 Allen Lombardi and his family moved to Lodi fulltime—they previously split time between California and New Jersey—and opening a tasting room just made sense. “It was the perfect time for them to plant new roots and fulfill their dream,” says Lisa Brand, the tasting room and event manager at Thomas Allen Winery. “As Allen likes to say, opening the tasting room has never felt like work.”

96

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019

The timing was also perfect because Lodi itself is experiencing growth, and the two families behind the Thomas Allen brand want to be part of that growth. “We hope to bring a new and exciting energy to Lodi,” Lisa says. In addition to making wine tasting accessible to all, regardless of experience or price point, the menu at Thomas Allen brings wine diversity to the community by spotlighting uncommon varietals. One of the most popular wines on the menu is the Generations Red Blend, a mix of syrah, petite sirah, and tannat, and they have more interesting flavors primed to add in the coming years. “We are just getting started,” says Lisa. what we're sipping now Bokisch 2017 Albariño, Terra Alta Vineyard The winery’s flagship albariño hails from the Terra Alta Vineyard. A soft golden hue with aromas of green apple, pineapple, and almond blossoms, this wine is a stunner. If you are looking for something to do in August, be sure to check out the Lodi Tour of Albariño weekend in Lodi Wine Country. Taking place August 9-11, this free event runs each day 11 AM-5 PM. Albariño is produced from a wine grape variety best known in Spain for its aromatic properties and high acidity. Stop at any of the participating wineries for a self-guided tour and sample the popular Spanish varietal for yourself.

Oak Farm Vineyards 2018 Albariño Oak Farm Vineyards makes an exceptional albariño that rivals those from the Rías Baixas region of Spain. Cravings

FALL for FRUIT FLAVORS  BY FAITH LEWIS

Nothing is sweater than sinking your fork into a warm pie when the weather cools down. You can, of course, get the family together around a traditional pumpkin pie dusted with cinnamon and wafting aromas of nutmeg and cloves. Or maybe it’s the caramelized crunch of an old-fashioned pecan pie that gets your mouth watering. Even this time of year, however, seasonal fruit flavors shouldn’t be overlooked. The trouble with pies, especially as the holidays loom nearer, is that they can be time consuming to make from scratch and it can be hard to get that finicky crust to crumble just right. Sure, you could cave and take the walk of shame down the frozen food aisle for a pre-made pie shell or beg grandma to stock the dessert table for family functions. But for those holiday hosts who don’t want to leave anything to chance, there’s another option to have your pie and eat it too: order one of these spectacular seasonal pies from local San Joaquin bakeries and prepare for some tantalizing fall flavors.

Clemont’s Ridge Whoever said fruit should be reserved for summer pies has never been lucky enough to try Clemont’s Ridge’s signature pear pie. With pear season in full swing during the fall months, grandma’s recipe doesn’t shy away from big fruit flavors with five pear halves in each and every pie. With the pears nested in a vanilla custard and dusted with nutmeg, this pie is best served at room temperature. Slice strategically to ensure pear on every plate. Expert Tip: Try the seasonal pumpkin and pecan pies, too. Clemont’s Ridge, 23225 Hwy. 88, Clements, (209) 7593850, ClementsRidge.net

Sweet Mel’s At Sweet Mel’s the seasonal flavors are available year round—but that doesn’t make them any less tempting as the weather cools and we find ourselves reaching for our trusty pie platter. While Dutch apple and pumpkin pies are in high demand at the bakery this time of year, none is as popular as the Marionberry pie, a type of blackberry that only grows in Marion County in Oregon. Served à la mode or à la carte, you’re sure to make guests drool when you dish out this pie. Sweet Mel’s, 623 E. Oak St., Lodi, (209) 329-0918

Michael David Winery A winery might not be the first place you’d think to find a pie and you might just scratch your head when we tell you to try the Peach Boysenberry. “But those are summer fruits!” you protest—trust us. With peach and boysenberry season stretching into the cooler months of August and September, this pie has a unique flavor profile that will change how you look at fall foods. KNOW Your BARISTA

HOUSE OF COFFEES’ LEADING LADIES  BY

SUZANNE LEDBETTER / D SUZANNE LEDBETTER

When it comes to getting our caffeine fix, the options are limitless. But for many of us, the local coffee shop is much like the bar scene from the sitcom Cheers. At least, that’s what it is like at House of Coffees in the heart of Lodi wine country. When you walk in the door, the baristas behind the counter welcome guests by calling them out by name, making their favorite coffee without having to ask, and even whipping up a surprise for the littles that are tagging along. The bottom line, these baristas, and this coffee shop, is like its own microcommunity. A community that feels like family. Because after playdates, meetings, and little league, that is exactly what House of Coffees means to Lodi.

Q. How long have you been with HOC? I’ve owned the shop for a little over a year and a half, but I’ve been a part of the HOC family my entire life. I’m so blessed to be part of HOC’s long-storied success. Q. Favorite thing about being a barista? The ability to be artistic and creative while getting to know people. I’m passionate about coffee, but I’m more passionate about community. I get to know amazing, incredible people doing this job. The relationships you create when spending a day at HOC are irreplaceable. Q. What are you doing when you aren’t running the show? When I’m not making coffee, I’m usually doing more work for HOC! But in my free time I love to spend time sitting on the beach. My husband and I love to camp and explore new areas. In the summer, you can find us paddling the river and shopping at the farmers market.

Q. What is your favorite drink? My favorite drink is the blended Nutty Hawaiian because the macadamia nut is perfect for a hot day and reminds me of Hawaii! Q. What is your favorite part about being a barista? The people. Over the past five years I’ve probably [served] the whole town of Lodi. It’s amazing to see people connect. We’ve seen people meet here, fall in love, have babies, and watch them grow.

Q. What is your favorite drink? Without a doubt, an iced Equality. The mix of the rich, dark chocolate and sweet, white chocolate paired with our espresso is the perfect combination. Q. What is your favorite thing about being a barista? My favorite thing would have to be the relationships I’ve built over the years. Especially here at HOC, our coworkers and customers are our family. Q. When you aren’t slanging coffee, what do you like to do? Even on my days off, you can often catch me at the shop hanging out enjoying a coffee, a beer, or a glass of wine.

CRAZY for CORN Original Recipes by the Fine Foodie Philanthropist, Suzanne Ledbetter With summer in full swing, we can’t get enough of our sweet, local corn! San Joaquin County’s landscape is loaded with the beauty of fresh corn fields that sway with the Delta breeze. And the fact that it’s grown locally means we get the freshest stuff around. I mean, what isn’t to love about good, old-fashioned corn on the cob? It’s an American summertime staple that is both good for you and tastes great! A rich source of vitamins and minerals, corn is one of the most popular veggies around, and I want to share a few of my favorite recipes for the season. When you try them at home, share them on social media and hashtag #sanjoaquinmagazine.

Grilled Mexican Corn INGREDIENTS 6 ears of corn ½ cup cilantro, washed and chopped 4 tbsp. lime juice 1 tsp. lime zest ½ cup Mexican crema ½ cup cotija cheese Hot sauce (optional) DIRECTIONS Prepare a grill to medium-high heat. Pull back the husk of the corn without removing it entirely. Remove the silk and then put the husk back into place. Grill and turn occasionally until slightly charred and cooked, about 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, mix ½ cup of crema with four tablespoons lime juice, ¼ teaspoon salt, and one teaspoon grated lime zest. Transfer the corn to a large platter and spread lime crema over the top. Sprinkle with cotija cheese and fresh cilantro.

Corn & Tomato Salad INGREDIENTS 6-8 ears of corn 1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 avocado 1 cup cilantro Queso fresca Mexican crema 3 tbsp. lime juice 1 garlic clove, pressed DIRECTIONS Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Add salt. Drop the corn into the boiling water, reduce heat to medium, and cover the pot with a lid. Boil for 15 minutes. Remove from the water, drain, and let cool. Slice off corn using a sharp knife and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Chop cherry tomatoes in half and cube the avocado. Add both to the corn. Chop one cup of cilantro and add half to the mixture. In a small bowl, combine the lime juice, Mexican crema, garlic, and the remaining cilantro. Thoroughly mix and pour over the corn salad.

Grilled Sausage with Spicy Corn Salad INGREDIENTS 6 jalapeno and cheddar sausage 6 hoagie rolls or buns of your choice 6 ears of corn ½ purple onion, diced ½ cup cilantro, chopped 2 limes, quartered ½ tsp. chili powder ½ cup pickled jalapenos ½ cup Cotija cheese, crumbled DIRECTIONS Turn your grill to medium heat and add the sausages. Cook for five to seven minutes, turning until grill marks appear. Remove from heat and transfer to a plate. Boil corn for 15 minutes in salted water, then remove from heat. Place the corn on the grill for three minutes, until slightly charred. Remove and slice corn into a bowl. Arrange buns on a large platter and fill with sausages. Top with charred corn and sprinkle chili powder over each sausage. Dice a purple onion and chop cilantro. Layer purple onion, cilantro, pickled jalapeno, Cotija, and one lime quarter over each bun. Serve and enjoy with an ice-cold, local beer.

FREAKSHOW in a CAN  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER Michael David Winery’s infamous Freakshow wine is already their fastest growing brand. And those who like to take wine on the go, in a perfectly sized individual package, can now do so! Michael David began canning the wine this past summer— the perfect accompaniment to your tailgate, backyard BBQ, or trip to the beach (where glass is prohibited). Unbreakable, portable, and the perfect portion, they might be tiny, but they pack a punch. And the best part— you don’t have to haul around a corkscrew and wine glass to enoy.

The Freakshow cans are filled with the same stellar Cabernet that goes into the bottles, so you know it’s good juice.
