Early intervention boosts development and school readiness for lasting success. Early intervention is more than just support—it’s a game-changer for your child’s future. Research shows that kids who receive services between ages 2 and 4 make big strides in communication, social skills, and independence. They enter school more prepared and confident, leading to better long-term outcomes. Investing in early support now means fewer challenges later, saving your family time and resources. Isaiah says. “Either way I wanted to do something about it.” Isaiah himself was traveling to run half marathons at the time, starting with a 2019 San Francisco race. When COVID-19 hit, most in person marathons in California were canceled. So, Isaiah started running virtually with a YouTube channel to document it all. The name Stowers Does it All actually came from his indecisiveness about what

sold more than 20 spots in the first 24 hours and eventually sold out the event, achieving more than breaking even (which was his original goal). “I was getting phone calls from KCRA, KWIN, Good day Sacramento, ABC 10. Everyone wanted to know what it was and be a part of it,” he says. “After the event was done, everyone asked if we were doing it again next year.” And so, Isaiah did it again… and again… and again. The running rockstar, in fact, will host his fifth annual High Five For Teachers 5K this year. But it’s not I do think that giving his company’s only race. So, in monetizing the events, Isaiah is able to give back to the community in more ways than one. “Every event has a beneficiary that we donate a portion of the funds to,” Isaiah says. Previous recipients have included GOT Kids and Family Promise of San Joaquin. Isaiah has even started his own organization called The Midsole Project that aims to provide free race registrations to kids ages 13 and under to any Skedaddle races, as well as shoes for anyone who doesn’t have the proper attire to run. “I think the best way to be involved is to just come out,” Isaiah says, adding the post-race festivities are a big emphasis of his events. Local businesses set up booths to sell their services, food trucks sell post-race fuel, and elaborate endrace designs are constructed including a winter wonderland each December. “Stockton is a complicated place. It’s not always depicted well in the media and online. But I do believe that a lot of times the issues that are happening in Stockton are happening because there’s just not enough things going on,” Isaiah the YouTube channel would be, not explains. “I do think that giving the community wanting to pigeonhole himself. rts, performance, and community are celebrated by performers of every experience level during Open Mic Night at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts. Once a month, the historic venue opens its doors for everyone, regardless of age, proficiency, or craft style, to come and showcase their inner performer on stage. Singers, dancers, poets, rappers, jazz artists, comedians … the stage welcomes anyone “We have such incredible who wants to share their local talent and it’s skills and creativity. The event series began wonderful to welcome in 2022 and has been them to the stage to growing in popularity in share in a community of the community ever since. support and appreciation Taking place in the Grand’s for the arts.” Studio Theatre, which holds up to 70 audience members, Open Mic Night runs for about two hours and generally hosts around 18 performers, with each performer allotted five minutes of stage time. Co-presented by the Tracy Arts Commission, the events are free for attendees and performers and are focused on inclusivity. “We have such incredible local talent and it’s wonderful to welcome them to the stage to share in a community of support and appreciation for the arts,” says David Bermillo, the host of Open Mic Nights and Cultural Arts Technical Coordinator for the City of Tracy. There is no age limit for performers and Bermillo says that they’ve had performers who are in elementary school up to performers with a lot more life experience. It is important to the Grand to make sure everyone feels welcome throughout the Open Mic Night experience. While performers are encouraged to perform their craft authentically, they are also asked to keep the audience in mind and let others know about any potential content concerns before they begin. By doing so, the event organizers hope that families will always feel welcome and everyone can decide for themselves if they would like to stay in the audience or pop out for a bit if a piece of content may not be appropriate for them at that time. Open Mic Nights happen monthly with sign-ups happening at the door at 6:30 p.m. and performances starting at 7 p.m. There is a calendar of dates available on the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts website.

D

r. Jordan Giannoni, 35, recently received the 2024 ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award. The award comes after 10 years of serving youth at Delta Community College, where Jordan herself is an alum. She also is a director on several non-profit boards including Lodi House, World of Wonders Science Museum Foundation, and Leadership Stockton; an elected official for the San Joaquin County Board of Education, Area 5; and a small business owner. One of three honored ATHENA recipients last year, we sat down with Jordan to talk about the award, her Central Valley roots, and the importance of championing others. In your eyes, what does this award stand for? Women are still so incredibly marginalized in our society, so to be recognized as a leader and someone who is committed to bettering the lives of women and girls in our community means a lot to me. My parents put a lot of work into helping me strengthen my voice so that I had the agency to stand up for myself in relationships, at school, and at work; to be able to lend my voice as an advocate for other women is the greatest honor of my life.

Q&A

A CHAMPION for Stockton’s Youth

Why Stockton? My grandfather, John Giannoni Sr., had left a legacy of coaching and mentoring young people in this area, and I felt very responsible for continuing that work. Plus, Stockton is such an incredible geographic location… it has a lot to offer and has so much potential. What are your goals for the future? I want to contribute to the city's economic development and better the lives of the people who live here, especially young women. What I brought back from my years working in corporate landscapes in San Francisco was a sense of urgency and a diverse perspective. Tell us about your new nonprofit. In my ATHENA acceptance speech, I announced that I'll be launching a non-profit in 2025 dedicated to the mission of fostering vital leadership and life skills for young women. The organization will offer scholarships for young women pursuing degrees in business and STEM fields, and our programs will focus on financial literacy, female friendships, leadership skills, selfworth, and c onfidence.

FITNESS

MOVES for Mobility FOUR STRETCHES FOR LONG-TERM HEALTH  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

T

he welcome mat in the entryway to Twin Arbors Sports Club is emblazoned with the phrase, “Mobility is the key to longevity.” The notion is the basis for much of the club’s philosophies surrounding health. Jackie Hughes, the club’s personal training director, shares four moves to get you started—and continue—on the path to long-term health, targeting the whole body. “All you need is consistent, mindful practice for less than ten minutes a day,” Jackie says. “You can do these stretches when you wake up or even right before bed.”

SHOULDERS To ease stiffness in the body’s most complex joint, thread the needle. Start on all fours with your knees directly under your hips and your hands under your shoulders. Twist your torso to the right and thread your left arm under your right, placing your head and left shoulder on the ground for support. Repeat on the opposite side.

THORACIC SPINE

HIPS

LOW BACK

A strong and flexible thoracic spine supports good posture, organ health, and reduces pain in the lower back and legs. A cat and cow thoracic stretch involves a tabletop position (on all fours) like the stretch above. Start with your spine in a neutral position and then push your hands into the floor and curve your midback toward the ceiling while your head hangs low. Exhale while you complete this move. Next, return to your neutral spine on the inhale and continue to reverse the move, lifting your chin toward the sky. Repeat slowly, with breath, five to eight times.

A knee to chest hip flexor stretch can loosen tight hip flexors. Start by lying flat on your back with both knees bent and your feet firmly rooted to the floor. Bring one knee at a time to your chest and hold it close to your body using your hands behind the knee. Hold the position for 15-30 seconds before releasing and repeat on the other leg.

Increasing the strength in your lower back makes daily tasks easier. Use a child’s pose stretch where you kneel on the floor and sit back on your heels. Without removing your glutes from your heels, lean forward so your stomach is resting on your thighs. Place your forehead on the floor and extend your arms long, palms facing down. Hold the pose as long as is comfortable.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

FALL IN LOVE

in Incline Village

A SNOWY, ROMANTIC GETAWAY  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

I

f you’re dreaming of snow-capped mountains and marvelous beach landscapes, look no further than Incline Village, an upscale destination on Lake Tahoe’s north shore. It’s just a quick trip over the mountains and into Nevada but will feel like you’ve transported to a Northern European city for a cozy weekend bundled up with your beau. Want to make the most of it? Don’t miss the below.

PLAY In summer, Lake Tahoe’s extensive beachfront is its most alluring draw, and there’s no reason you can’t enjoy those same landscapes in winter with an easy stroll through the sand. This is, of course, also ski territory, and Diamond Peak Ski Resort is Incline Village’s very own ski experience, boasting 27 runs, six chairlifts, and 14 open glades over 655 acres of snowy terrain. If you prefer to hit the mountains on foot, a snowshoe tour is the way to go. Just 20 minutes outside of Incline, Tahoe Meadows and Chickadee Ridge offer plenty to see. The latter even gets its name from the parade of birds that fly in to dine on nuts and seeds presented in outstretched hands.

DINE If you leave your resort (more on that later), dinner at Rosewood Tahoe is highly coveted. Reservations are recommended at the comfortable American eatery with Italian influence, serving up everything from volcano lamb shanks and polenta cakes to luxury charcuterie boards and custom cocktails.

If you want a sip of wine pre- or post-dinner, Glasses Wine Bar is an intimate gathering space offering a vast array of vinos, and occasionally events. Located in Village Center, the space stays open until 9 or 10 PM Tuesday through Saturday.

BLISS No relaxing getaway is complete without a trip to the spa. At Stillwater Spa, a touchless trio offers a lessinvasive, full-service spa package with three combined treatments, including time in its flotation orb featuring an Epsom salt soaking experience with multi-color LED lighting for color therapy, stereo transducer speakers, and dual in-tank heaters; the Cryobuilt Everest Ridge Cryochamber; and the harmony BioAcoustic therapy mat, which uses amethyst crystal to relieve aches and pains. All three services promote both physical and mental wellbeing, assisting with anti-aging and rejuvenation

STAY The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort Spa and Casino is perhaps the most popular option in this little stretch of Lake Tahoe heaven. The lakefront resort combines the calming effects of the nearby beach with the picturesque Sierra Nevada mountain range in the distance, offering the winning combination of beach and mountain therapy, all splashing waves and mountain air. It’s easy to visit and never leave the resort, instead dining at the award-winning, on-site restaurants including Osteria Sierra and Lone Eagle Grille, indulging in luxury spa experiences, or playing a few table games at the casino. In addition to spacious rooms, there are also private lakefront cottages to rent. Every week a calendar of events offers everything from guided hikes, artistic educational classes, mountainside cocktails, paint and sips, sound baths, meditation, yoga, and more.

New Year, New

Michelada Mix

STOCKTON'S EL CEJAS EXPANDING LOCAL FAVORITE  BY ERIN MEYERING

32

JANUARY 2025

| SJMAG.COM

T

here’s nothing a good Michelada doesn’t fix. The popular Mexican drink is made with beer, lime juice, assorted sauces (often chili-based), spices, and chili peppers. Best served in a tall, chilled, and salt-rimmed glass. And someone who knows it well, the folks at El Cejas … The initial inspiration came from a, perhaps, unlikely place … Jesse’s childhood. He would often do Micheladas for his grandma, becoming familiar with the flavor of the popular drink, and he had a dream he would create this Michelada mix to go. These deep roots continued at the family restaurant for Jesse Hernandez, El Cejas CEO. He worked at his dad's place, Fiesta Mexicana located in the South of Stockton and would often be asked to do Micheladas. After starting a pop-up stand with fruit and virgin micheladas, it was clear the savory drink was going to be a big hit. “Due to high demand, the summer gig [of making micheladas] began to be a year round side job,” says Genesis Soto, El Cejjas President. “Jesse would go in every Friday to make fresh michelada mix and sell it in a bottle to go.” After several years, the duo took steps to mass produce, now available everywhere from the Fresno area up to South Lake Tahoe. The now-expanded product line sells in over 2,000+ locations including chain accounts as in SaveMarts, Rancho San Miguel, Cost Less, Grocery Outlets, Food 4 Less, out-of-state shipping, and more. “We have slowly incorporated different flavors into rimmers and michelada cups. Most recently, we included gummies and margarita mix,” says Soto. While the classic michelada is still their top seller, you may want to add chili gummy works with chamoy and the refreshing cucumber-lime michelada mix to your rotation. “Each year we gained more and more popularity,” says Genesis Soto, El Cejjas President. “Thankfully due to our determination and commitment to making this work, we are here today.”

Your Best Self: ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR HEALTH AND WEIGHT LOSS

A

common New Year’s resolution for many is to shed a few pounds and improve health. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 41 percent of U.S. adults over 20 are obese, increasing their risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issues. By making thoughtful lifestyle, diet, and exercise choices, individuals can enhance energy, mobility, and overall well-being. For those who need it, weight loss can boost energy, improve mobility, and enhance participation in daily activities. Whether playing with children, enjoying walks with friends, or achieving fitness goals like running a marathon, becoming more active can foster confidence and fulfillment.

NUTRITION

THE BASICS OF WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Caloric intake is crucial for weight management. To maintain or lose weight, it’s essential to understand your maintenance calories, influenced by factors such as age, metabolism, and activity level. Free online calculators can estimate maintenance calories and daily energy needs. After determining your daily calorie target, you can either reduce portion sizes or opt for nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods. Meals rich in fresh vegetables and high in fiber, like salads and protein bowls, can help you stay fuller longer and make healthier choices sustainable. If you enter into a caloric deficit for weight loss, ensure you get enough protein, vitamins, and micronutrients to avoid health concerns that may arise from eating less.

The principle behind weight loss is simple: burn more calories than you consume. However, putting this into practice can be challenging. Balancing calorie intake and energy expenditure requires careful attention to diet and activity levels.

MEDICATION OPTIONS

INCREASING CALORIC BURN Physical activity is vital for health and weight management. An active lifestyle not only builds strength and stability but also allows for a higher calorie intake while maintaining or losing weight. The most effective exercises depend on your schedule and current fitness level, so choose activities you enjoy and can commit to regularly. Consult with a doctor before beginning a new exercise routine. Joining a gym can provide consistency, especially when participating in fitness classes. Trainers and group settings offer motivation and accountability that help reinforce a routine.

WHEN TO SEEK SUPPORT While diet and exercise are key to weight loss and maintenance, it can be difficult to sustain these changes alone. For some, medication can support their weight loss journey by suppressing appetite or boosting metabolism.

Many medications and treatment options are available to help those who want a little help losing weight. Ozempic and semaglutide are injectable medications that help suppress appetite, and phentermine is an oral medication that helps boost metabolism and suppress appetite. Ozempic and semaglutide are available through some medical aesthetic companies to anyone who qualifies after an initial assessment of health, which includes checking BMI and getting blood work done. (Individuals who want to be on those medications must have a BMI higher than 17 and the bloodwork must indicate they are not diabetic, as that condition must be treated by a primary care physician.) Phentermine requires a pre-screening that includes an EKG to make sure the individual’s heart is healthy prior to medication. This oral medication can be prescribed for three months at a time, after which the individual must take a month-long break before continuing, if desired. With the help of medication, individuals can expect to lose about 5-8 lbs a month if they also follow a diet and exercise regimen.

EXPERT INSIGHTS One lab that offers weight loss medication is Aesthetic Lab Inc. Mandy, a Medical Assistant working directly under Dr. Nandeesh Veerappa and Gifty Aidoo, NP, encourages a healthy foundation prior to starting medication. “The best thing to do is to start a diet and exercise routine and program to get into the habit of it. Once you’re evaluated and start treatment, it's important to continue with those good habits you already established,” she said. Illa Cox, owner of Cox Medical Aesthetics, also offers weight loss solutions and agrees that it’s best not to rely solely on the medications themselves. “It’s best to come in and create a plan that includes making changes like going to the gym, running, or doing some form of exercise,” she explained. Her practice always starts with a full health assessment, including discussing what foods are your go-to choices when snacking and what times of day you may be most tempted. Once they fully understand your lifestyle and needs, they help create a plan with you that encourages exercise and healthy diet choices, and that may include medication or supplements.

THE PATH TO SUCCESS Weight management involves commitment and finding what works best for your body and lifestyle. By combining smart food choices, consistent physical activity, and, if needed, medical assistance, you can set achievable goals and feel your best.

Hot Vacation

Ford is promising a game changer in the electric car game with their 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning. The new vehicle is described as ultra-fast with a roomy interior, and a frunk (front trunk). Hot Shades

You know what’s always in? Being kind. February marks National Random Acts of Kindness Month with the week of Feb. 17 serving as National Random Acts of Kindness Week. Challenge yourself to pay it forward with small acts of service whether that’s an extra-large tip on your morning coffee or leaving a kind note on a stranger’s car.

Hot Color

Shades of yellow are on the horizon. Whether you’re redecorating your space, adding pops of color to existing rooms, or looking for vibrant clothing staples, yellow promises to be everywhere this year. Plus, some experts are even predicting it’ll be one of Pantone’s annual colors.

Hot Body

Hot Food

Korean fare is getting some serious attention as of late. Whether you’re after Korean fried chicken, are interested in exploring the intricate flavors associated with Korean BBQ, or desire the more traditional Korean hot pot experience, you can find it all at Korean restaurants like Yogi Korean BBQ, Seoul Soondubu, and K-Town Korean BBQ & Hot Pot.

Hot Smile

Want to add a bit of sparkle to your smile? Dental bling is having a moment, with tooth gems offering a little extra oomph to your pearly whites. Get yours placed by a dental professional to ensure the best quality (and no negative side effects).

Hot Mocktail Whether you’ve given up alcohol completely or are simply sober curious, mocktails seem to be here to stay. Many local restaurants have given in to the trend by not just offering cute garnishes on a glass of sparkling water, but actually creating mocktails worth ordering, using many of the same ingredients as traditional cocktails and non-alcoholic spirits. One of our favorites? An Old Fashioned made with maple syrup, black tea, angostura bitters, and an orange peel or Luxardo cherry. SJMAG.COM

Known for being sweet and creamy with nutty undertones, the purple sweet potato is used in everything from coffee to ice cream. Each spring, an ube (or ube and matcha) festival comes to Stockton. If you can’t wait until then to get your fix, pick up an ube latte from Terra Coffee.

Don Luis Mexican Restaurant BREAKFAST, LUNCH OR DINNER, WITH CUTS OF BEEF ABOVE THE REST!  STORY BY SARAH STEFFENS / D BY MIGUEL MARTINEZ

on Luis Mexican Restaurant is known for cooking, and serving food that is locally sourced, and crafted with love. Walk into this Stockton gem, and you’ll know right away that you are someplace special. Its dining room, and walls boast of a hominess, and an authenticity, that you can’t find at most restaurants. Exposed brick, and eclectic art, combined with the aromas of Mexican herbs and spices, and the sounds of customers socializing over slow-simmered, flame-grilled, and seared and sauteed entrees will cause your senses to drift to a dining experience that is both rustic, and sophisticated. Since 1994, Don Luis Mexican Restaurant has prided itself in offering some of the best Mexican food in California. Its menu is big, with an impressive list of

breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with selections that are a traditional family favorite, or prepared with a modern twist. Start the day with their Linguica & Eggs, a hearty breakfast of Portuguesestyle sausage grilled to perfection, or their Chilaquiles, a breakfast featuring fried corn tortillas in a savory sauce topped with onion, cilantro, sour cream, and cheese, and top either off with a steaming cup of locally roasted Clayton’s Coffee, and you’ll be off to a good start to your day. For lunch, try their Pozole. It’s a Mexico City-style soup that features perfectly simmered pork, the chef’s specialty. Ready for dinner? Don Luis’s menu will whisk you to specialties galore. Dishes such as their Home-Style Tamales, filled with shredded pork, and served with their famous gravy, and cheese, or their Camarones ala Diabla, a spicy dish of jumbo prawns sauteed with a secret blend of spices, and what the kitchen at Don Luis calls, “a caliente delight”, are sure to satisfy. Try

their Chimichangas, taking your pick between chicken, pork, or beef, all served with traditional rice, and beans. You can’t go wrong! If that were all we had to share, we know you and your loved ones would be in good hands, with happy bellies, ordering anything off of the Don Luis Mexican Restaurant menu. But we wanted to highlight something extra special, and that is the fact on Don Luis’ beef. You see, in traditional Mexican cooking, common cuts of beef used in recipes are arrachera (skirt steak), carne asada (grilled beef from either the flank or skirt portions of beef), and cabeza (head meat). These cuts are delicious, and tender, and make for an amazing meal. That being said, to take it up another notch, the kitchen at Don Luis offers a cut of beef that you won’t find on many Mexican restaurant menus—

ribeye. Ribeye is one of the most-prized cuts of beef, for its rich marbled flavor, and tender, and juicy textures. It’s higher fat content makes it ideal for grilling, or searing, bringing out its charred flavor beneath a juicy crust. Some call it the perfect steak, and we’re not surprised that you can find ribeye perfection on Don Luis’ menu for several items, such as their carne asada, grilled to your liking with bell pepper, onion, and tomato, and served with guacamole, and sour cream. Or, their ChickenFried Steak & Eggs, featuring a handbreaded ribeye steak, tenderized, and fried to perfection, all smothered in their gravy made from scratch. They even have a grilled ribeye Steak Sandwich served on Genova bread, and with a side of Kennebec French fries. No matter what you order, we know you will be happy, when you order from Don Luis Mexican Restaurant. How’s that for your next time out for Mexican food in San Joaquin County?

15 Years of Food and Fun

STOCKTON RESTAURANT WEEK IS BACK JAN. 17-26  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

R

eady for delicious dining deals throughout Stockton? Stockton Restaurant Week returns at participating eateries and 2025 marks the event’s 15th year. From Jan. 17-26, residents and visitors to the Port City can dine at a discount, with two- and threecourse set-priced menus from active spots. Meals include breakfast, lunch, and dinner options at price points ranging from $10-35+. Whether you’re enjoying new menu items at an old favorite or exploring somewhere new, the ten-day event encourages eating out and supporting local in the weeks following the holidays when many culinary spots

experience a lull. In short, everybody wins. “Stockton Restaurant Week is crucial to our community as it supports local businesses, boosts the local economy, and celebrates the diversity of our food scene,” says Diana Nuno from Visit Stockton. “It brings people together, fosters pride in our city, and provides opportunities for local restaurants to thrive.” Another benefit of Restaurant Week is chefs often come up with creative dishes that aren’t on the regular menu so you’re not just getting the same food at a lower price, but also have the chance to try some new menu items that may or may not ever return.

This year, the event’s gamification is back with chances to win prizes simply by participating in Restaurant Week. To enter, download the mobile app and upload photos of what you’re eating. The more you dine out, the more opportunities you have to win prizes. Angelina’s Spaghetti House has been on the list since the event’s inception, offering up a unique menu every January for 15 years. This year, the $25 dinner will include three scrumptious courses starting with a choice of minestrone soup or salad, with a main course of grilled salmon or chicken parmesan served with grilled vegetables and a side

of ravioli, lasagna, spaghetti, fettucine, or tortellini, and finishing with either chocolate ravioli and vanilla ice cream or a house-made cheesecake. While the complete line-up of participating restaurants isn’t finalized just yet, you can keep an eye on the growing list at VisitStockton.org. Joining Angelina’s as an early sign-up are Binge Vietnamese Fusion, De Vega Brothers Italian Cuisine, Fat City Brew & BBQ, FIRED PIZZA, Ohana Café, and The House of Pita.
