Dignity Health - St. Joseph's Medical Center opened its doors as St. Joseph’s Home and Hospital in December of 1899. Its founder, Father William B. O'Connor, collaborated with the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael to assist a local group of physicians in finding a suitable place to treat their medical and surgical patients with specialized care. As the population of Stockton and the surrounding towns increased, St. Joseph's grew alongside the community to meet the complexities and challenges of delivering quality health care—leading the way with firsts in cardiac, cancer, maternity, pediatrics, and emergency care services.

Celebrating 125 years, St. Joseph's Medical Center is proud to serve the Stockton community. For more information, please visit dignityhealth.org/stockton.

SJMAG.COM | MARCH 2024 15 the TRENDS | PEOPLE | CULTURE | STYLE Writing for Change LOCALS TO KNOW LAWREN PITROLA PUBLISHES DANCING FEET CHILDREN’S BOOK  BY ANGELA RUDOLPH / D BY SOPHIA ELLE

Lawren Pitrola's pinch-me moment occurred when she received an email asking if she would permit Pegasus Publishing to publish her book. For two years, she had been striving to get her whimsical children's book, Dancing Feet, inspired by her youngest daughter and the family dog, to a broader audience.

"I almost couldn't believe it," Lawren explains. "After years of trying, it finally happened. Now, you can find the book sold online worldwide—in Portugal, London, Spain, and, of course, at local bookstores in San Joaquin County. It's almost surreal, walking into certain Target or Barnes & Noble locations and seeing my book on the shelves!"

Lawren, a local mother from Woodbridge, has five children in her blended family, which she prioritizes, while also supporting local causes. Her books are printed in the United States to contribute to our nation's economy, and they are hardcover because Lawren is well aware of the wear and tear that occurs with muchloved books in little hands and wanted to ensure the book could withstand the test of time.

The story guides the reader through

her youngest daughter and has plans for two more books that incorporate aspects of her other children's personalities, too.

"Dancing Feet was not only an important project for me to accomplish my own goal of becoming an author, but it was a way for me to write with a purpose and support a cause I truly believe in—ending child trafficking," Lawren explains. "It's an issue that we often shy away from and don't discuss openly because of how horrific it is, but I've come to realize that we must start talking about it and supporting organizations that fight against it to make a true impact."

"I almost couldn't believe it... After years of trying, it finally happened,"

a day in the life of a young girl and her canine companion as they hustle and bustle about. With enchanting rhymes and beautiful photos on every page, the book is perfect for children aged five to seven. Lawren integrates small details about her family and their lives throughout the book, making it a little personal.

A quarter of the proceeds from each book sold goes to O.U.R. Rescue Organization (Operation Underground Railroad), an organization dedicated to ending human sex trafficking. Lawren is a self-described "mama wolf" and is very protective of her family, with goals of helping other families keep their children safe. She hopes to have a lasting, positive impact on this cause with the donations from the book’s sales and by spreading awareness around the issue.

"My husband proposed to me at the top of the Space Needle in Seattle, and if you look closely, you can spot the Seattle coffee mug I sip from every day in the illustrations in the book," Lawren says. "Throughout the book, there are lots of little details—pictures on the wall, bluebirds outside, physical features of some of the characters that are similar to my family members—little pieces of my life and family that make it really special for me."

Lawren has always had a knack for writing. A literary natural, she has been particularly drawn to poetry. Her dream of becoming a published author was decades in the making, and despite realizing one dream, she's not done yet. Lawren based this first book on

You can purchase Dancing Feet nationwide, available on Amazon, through select major resellers like Target and Barnes & Noble, and in local bookstores, including Willow Tree Children's Boutique in downtown Lodi. GRANT CATALYZES NONPROFIT TO MAINTAIN UNHOUSED YOUTH PROGRAM

The Children’s Home of Stockton operates a large shelter for unhoused youth in San Joaquin County called Catalyst and thanks to a $225,000 grant from the Stockton City Council, the project will continue supporting those youth.

The nonprofit provides an important service because “youth homelessness is really underestimated,” says Children’s Home of Stockton CEO Joelle Gomez. “When we do our county’s ‘point-in-time’ count to measure homelessness, it’s really focused on the adult population and not youth. However, we know that with programs like Catalyst, we can work upstream to prevent homelessness for youth.”

The Catalyst program offers 18 beds to youth ages 18 to 24 on a six-acre property but does more than give them a place to sleep. Catalyst also guides and supports youth with daily living so they can learn to become independent. Transitional Age Youth coaches help with day-to-day case management, which may include parenting classes or how to grocery shop, but the coaches also focus on the youth’s goals and dreams such as getting a GED or enrolling at a college.

Some shelter programs limit how long youth can stay but Catalyst does not because the Children’s Home of Stockton recognizes every young person has unique needs and different situations, according to Joelle. Some youths have been with the program for a year or

more. They avail themselves of beds but also other services such as mental health counseling or connecting with an LGBTQIA+ center. “We refer youth to any resource that makes them feel like they matter and are important,” Joelle adds.

One of the aspects that helps youth feel important is Catalyst’s physical space. The Children’s Home of Stockton has two houses called cottages that are warm and welcoming. “When some people tour, they say, ‘This is nicer than my house!’ and why not? Youth should have a space that’s conducive to their thriving and supports who they are,” she says.

Supporting the youth of Stockton requires more than a $225,000 grant but for now, with the funds the

Children’s Home of Stockton can keep tending to an oftenoverlooked population: unhoused youth.

St. Patrick’s Day 101

LEARN ABOUT THE MAN ST. PATRICK AND WHY WE WEAR GREEN

As with many holidays, how St. Patrick’s Day started and what it’s become are two very different things. The man who inspired the holiday supposedly died on March 17, 461 but it wasn’t until 1631 when the Church established a feast day in his honor that people celebrated his life. The Patron Saint of Ireland, Patrick was a Roman-British citizen who was enslaved and taken to Ireland where he either escaped or was released. After he became a priest, he went back to Ireland and converted many Druids to Christianity. Other than that, not much is known about Patrick because he lived so long ago and there are few records of his life other than his personal accounts.

While it’s become a secular holiday, traditionally St. Patrick’s Day was more religious and spiritual, offering Christians a day off from the prescriptions of abstinence leading up to

Easter. In fact, until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated pubs be closed on March 17. Now though, St. Patrick’s Day is a festive occasion with parades and parties. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on March 17, 1601, in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Fla. The parade was organized by the Spanish Colony’s Irish vicar Ricardo Artur.

Much later in 1772, Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched in New York City to honor St. Patrick, and from there, enthusiasm for the holiday spread, particularly when numerous Irish people immigrated to the U.S. during the Great Potato Famine in 1845. Originally ostracized and discriminated against, American Irish soon realized there was strength in numbers and they began to organize and became a voting bloc known as the “green machine.”

The color green is a nod to the Irish

Rebellion of 1798 when the Irish wore the color and sang the song “The Wearing of the Green” during the rebellion. That’s also when they started associating green with St. Patrick, and these days green is the official color of St. Patrick’s Day with everything from rivers to beer flowing green. You can find green beer yourself at Valley Brew.

Poison Prevention

AVERT AND TREAT ACCIDENTAL HOUSEHOLD POISONINGS

Under sinks, sitting on pantry shelves, and inside of bathroom vanities, poisonous items are often aplenty, and over 2 million accidental household poisonings happen each year. “Most of these accidental poisonings are avoidable by proper storage of chemicals, medications, and items such as batteries,” says John Ludlow, MD, Kaiser Permanente Central Valley emergency medicine physician.

According to Dr. Ludlow, the most common emergency room accidental poisoning cases he sees occur from splashes and spills of cleaning products, ingestions of medications both prescription and over the counter, and ingestion of foreign bodies, such as button batteries, which can cause serious damage to the esophagus or intestines.

Luckily, the taste of cleaners such as bleach or automotive products is enough to cause most children to spit the chemical out before harm is done. “Most often, accidental cleaning product or pesticide exposure simply requires rinsing/showering and/or drinking water,” Dr. Ludlow says.

Poison can reach anyone, not just kids. Taking precautions when using chemical cleaning products is important for avoiding accidental consumption such as wearing gloves and using a mask to keep these items out of the eyes and mouth. “Some poisonings have direct antidotes, but most do not, so treatment involves supporting individuals until the symptoms have passed,” Dr. Ludlow says.

For medicines, keep items clearly labeled and always follow instructions for

use to avoid incorrect dosing. “Children’s medication such as Children’s Tylenol are often flavored… so children may unintentionally overdose on over the counter medications,” Dr. Ludlow says. “It is very important to keep these out of the reach of children.” Teenagers may ingest items on purpose, especially those containing alcohol, such as mouthwash, hand sanitizer, and cough medicine. “If a product is labeled as an ‘elixir,’” Dr. Ludlow says, “be aware that it contains alcohol (liquor).”

If you or someone else in your household accidentally ingests chemicals, call Poison Control at (800) 222-1222 and keep this number posted on your refrigerator to save time when it matters most. If the person is in distress, dial 9-11 immediately.

Improve

your Tomorrow

LOCAL NONPROFIT

TRANSFORMS THE FUTURE

Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT) is dedicated to closing the college achievement gap for young men of color. The organization makes a 12year commitment to the participants in their programs, starting in 7th grade and continuing through their college journeys and beyond. IYT is there every step of the way, recognizing the importance of building community and providing mentorship as young men navigate the complex world of college and start their professional careers.

“There’s always been a special place in my heart when it comes to the issues

young men of color face including mental health and pressures related to gang violence,” says Jesús Andrade, senior director of school partnerships and policy for Central Valley, which includes Merced, Stanislaus, and San Joaquin counties. “I was a Stockton City Council member from 2017 to 2020. Whenever we saw reports on homicides, gun violence, etc., men of color were always on the wrong side of the data sets. The same was observed with mental health, physical health, and school success reports. IYT works to reverse those statistics. It offers an upstream solution. We work with the young men while they’re still receptive and open to mentorship.”

The organization was founded by two men of color: Michael Lynch and Michael Casper. IYT helps young men of color recognize their potential—to see how great, intelligent, and worthy they are. The organization builds the participants’ confidence and abilities. Right now, the organization helps over 4,000 young men of color. However, when considering the family members and friends of those 4,000 participants, the impact is exponential.

“The reason the organization is as successful as it is, is lies in the culture of the organization,” explains Jesús.

“The organization has a succinct mission: ‘get young men of color into and through college’ and create a loving and brotherly accountability that you can feel in IYT’s classroom.”

With offices already established in Sacramento, the Central Valley, and the Bay Area, IYT has now become a national organization, recently expanding into Maryland and Minnesota.

With symbolism throughout mythology, religion, folklore, art, and literature, horses are typically representations of strength, beauty, triumph, competition, and heroism. This reputation reaches beyond the fictional realm, and many who have encountered or work with horses speak extensively about the spiritual and intuitive nature of these grand animals. Some even say horses choose their riders the way a dragon may in literary fantasy.

David Cavallo, owner of Cavallo Riding Center in Tracy, recounts a time when he almost had to get rid of a horse on his property because it didn’t get along with anyone. A young girl came to his stables and started brushing the horse and the honre creature immediately responded. For some reason, this one little girl he warmed to, when advanced trainers couldn’t ride the horse or even break through its icy demeanor. David ended up selling the horse to the young girl for one dollar, saving it from a future at auction. “I don’t know what it is about them, it’s really strange,” David says. “Horses pick their people.”

“There truly is a bond that is built up between horse and rider that provides growth in a relationship,” Kathy Beattie, owner of Horse & Vine Equestrian in Lodi, agrees.

THERAPEUTIC CONNECTIONS

Horses are often used in settings with challenged kids and adults or those with special needs. For reasons unknown, horses are able to connect with people who may be nonverbal or have other disabilities or even personality quirks such as being shy. David says his team has seen a lot of great results with kids on the autism spectrum and riders with cerebral palsy. Parents often say kids’ verbal skills increase, their excitement levels rise, and their overall attitude improves after beginning riding lessons.

Some of the benefits are, of course, scientific. For example, working with

horses provides good exercise and riding helps to develop the core muscles people need. Dependent on their specific skills and abilities, lessons at Cavallo can include parents riding with their kids on the same horse or standing alongside them. In other instances, a trainer or other employee will step in for the lesson. “It depends on the child and what their situation is,” he says. “It is very therapeutic.”

“Horses force you to be outside and to exercise without thinking about it. They require attention everyday whether it be feeding, grooming, picking out their feed, mucking, hauling buckets of food

and water, and of course exercising them whether on their back or through ground work. There are no excuses ever for exercise! It’s required,” Kathy says.

There is, however, also the intangibles of horse therapy. Something about horses, perhaps similar to owning a dog, offers companionship. And kids that may not have a lot of friends or a tough home life or medical struggles can really benefit from that unspoken camaraderie.

“They really connect with the horses,” Cavallo says of kids who take lessons or engage in other horse experiences at the riding center. He sees a level of confidence in young riders, especially young girls,

adding a child can walk in barely speaking and very shy and after a few rides bossing around a big animal, they find their inner (and outer) voice. The transformations can be life changing. “After six months or a year they are large and in charge because they tell this 1500-pound animal what to do.”

There have even been instances where kids started thriving in school both socially and academically after starting riding lessons, according to David. “[It] gives them something to focus on, teaches them responsibility [and accountability].”

Kids with developmental disabilities can sometimes get their lessons paid for. “We have two or three agencies we work with state funded where the state pays for… their lessons,” David explains.

Whether it’s the exercise elements or the horse itself, David doesn’t know, but he has encountered improved health conditions, too. One woman in particular was on medication for high blood pressure when she started bringing her granddaughter out to the stables. The woman would brush the horses and watch her granddaughter ride. As a result, her blood pressure decreased and she was able to get off of the medication, noting the only recent change in her life was her trips to the stables. “The horses are very spiritual… they give a lot of calm and peace to the people,” David says.

COMPETITION & LESSONS

While learning to ride and care for a horse is one piece of the puzzle, competition brings a lot of opportunity, as well. At Horse & Vine Equestrian, there is an emphasis on dressage, a form of riding performed in exhibition and competition that uses slight, barely perceptible gestures to guide the horse. Some pursue dressage solely for mastery instead of any competitive drive.

At Cavallo, traditional horse lessons are a big part of the business, plus the stables are open for boarding. A trail system throughout the property is open only to those that board their horses at Cavallo. However, those who want to dip their toes into the competition pool can try cattle sorting.

Cattle sorting includes an arena filled with ten numbered cows. Two people on horseback must work against the clock to sort the cows into the correct order inside of the 60x60 pin. The sport is often seen at rodeo events.

“Our motto here is getting kids on horses,” David says. However, he adds that lessons are available for those of all ages and all skill levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. Mostly its western discipline, but his wife, Heidi Cavallo, also teaches some English riding.

Horse experiences include getting on a horse but not necessarily a lesson. “We’ll give them like 45 minutes of time on a horse,” he says. “Sometimes couples will come out for Valentine’s Day or dates,” he explains. But the experiences are always in the big arena, supervised.

LEGACY

For many, getting involved with horses at a young-age results in a life-long love of the animal. David, for example, is the third generation owner of his Tracy ranch, transforming old barns into modern stables with the help of his wife. “Heidi has been in the horse world for many, many years,” David shares. She’s an accomplished trainer and the lead for lessons at the ranch. Her work with horses dates back to her youth growing up in Texas followed by working at ranches in the Bay Area after relocating to California as a teenager.

At Cavallo, there are six to eight lesson horses on property including mostly quarter horses but also a pony or two. “Once they get to be good lesson horses,

they are hard to replace,” David says. However, he has sold a couple of established horses to students who bonded well with them, going back to the idea that sometimes horses and people just make good pairs.

“People love this ranch because they say it’s so peaceful,” David says, commenting on the buildings that have stood since his family first purchased the land in 1927, many of which were built by his grandfather in the 1930s. “It’s just got a lot of history here.”

Kathy grew up with horses as well and came back to the profession later in life. “Horses have been a part of my life since very young, growing up in Great Britain, participating in the local horse stables, gymkhanas, and riding throughout the countryside,” she says. In her 30s, she brought her family out to Point Reyes routinely to ride her Arabian Trail horse. “Later in life I transitioned to the Warmblood horses and dressage discipline. After importing a German Hanoverian Warmblood, I was hooked."

While those interested in dressage and competition can certainly benefit from Kathy’s knowledge and the set-up of her expansive Lodi ranch, the business is also open for recreational purposes.

After your baby is born, you may believe the physical, emotional, and mental changes will begin to decline. And while that is true for some women, others actually struggle most during the postnatal period. After giving birth, your body will continue to change and your hormones will continue to fluctuate. Postnatal care can include everything from lactation support to ensure your baby is getting the nutrition he or she needs to screenings for postpartum depression.

According to Mandana Motameni, the lead midwife at San Joaquin General Hospital, the biggest concerns are often drug treatment, mental health, and sexually transmitted infections. Basically, anything that falls under mental health or OB/ GYN care can go through the department’s OB/GYN Department. And from there, mothers can be put in touch with specialists from any discipline to get them the help they need.

“We provide prenatal and postnatal family planning counseling, depression screening, blood pressure checks upon discharge, inhouse [lactation] support, and birth control,” Mandana says. “Additionally, we check for sexually transmitted diseases, offer assistance, and put ladies in contact with

social service organizations for drug rehab programs and shelter if necessary.”

The center is available to anyone for prenatal and postnatal care. Indicators it may be time to seek help include symptoms of depression during or after pregnancy, or simply trouble getting back into your routines after having a baby. Postpartum stretches and Kegel exercises can be helpful for returning to optimal physical health. Monitoring blood pressure and keeping an eye on your changing body can also indicate the need for continued care post-birth.

Those who are having trouble at home can work with the center to get help from a social worker, while those struggling with their new identity or hormonal fluctuations that seriously impact their moods can get a

referral to mental health services.

Having a baby is a stressful time in any family. Even when the good outweighs the bad, it can be hard to adjust to your new identity and all of the changes happening at once. There is no shame is asking for help, and with entities like the Family Maternity Center, it’s easy to get help in one place even if you’re not quite sure what it is you need to heal.

Get Your Business Degree JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER

Adegree isn’t always necessary for your career, but when looking at a future in business, it can help maximize earning potential. With an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree in accounting or business administration, students can gain the necessary skills to be successful in future endeavors.

At Humphreys University, a private, nonprofit university founded in 1896, staff caters to students. Instructors are available to discuss coursework throughout the program and each student is assigned advisors to guide them. There are also additional resources to impact success, such as a library and learning center, available tutors, and a library database for research. Business pathways include accounting and business administration and those who take the accounting route are prepared to pass the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination to work as public accountants or in managerial accounting careers.

The associate’s degree specifically prepares students for entry-level positions, but many graduates continue on to the additional degree programs, increasing their specialized knowledge and future earning potential. “The Business Administration BS program is designed to give students broad exposure to the functional areas of business, including operations, marketing, finance, and accounting,” says Sandra Curiel, marketing manager for Humphreys. The program not only focuses on upperdivision management courses but also has a strong liberal arts component to enhance communication skills.

All accounting students study ethics, gain a global perspective, and learn how to examine business issues from the viewpoint of multiple disciplines.

The bachelor’s degree offers additional knowledge and tools to prepare students to contribute to financial decision making. Business administration students focus on analytical skills and receive

practical knowledge for planning, accounting, financial management, marketing, management consulting, entrepreneurship, and general management careers. The bachelor’s prepares students for a mid-level or higher executive position while the MBA program is designed to help students meet the needs of current and future business leaders at an even higher level. Many victims of online scams have no idea they’ve been targeted until it’s too late. As technology advances, the ability to “phish” information—the fraudulent practice of obtaining sensitive information through email, text message, or over the phone—has become easier. It can even occur in person. This is often done by asking for personal information including credit card numbers or passwords while pretending to be a reputable organization, or someone interested in your wellbeing.

It’s important to remember that banks will never ask for sensitive financial or personal information over email or text. To avoid phishing, do not open links inside of emails asking for personal information, do not respond to text message requests for information or with links asking you to update your account, and do not provide sensitive information over the phone if a “bank” calls you. Instead, hang up and call your bank to ensure you’re really talking to your financial institution. Other ways phishers can access your information is through unsecured WIFI connections, browsers without encryption software, and websites that don’t begin with https.

At the end of the day,

Protect Yourself AGAINST FRAUD

avoiding fraud is a partnership between customer and bank. To monitor your accounts, review your credit bureau information for suspicious activity annually by ordering a copy of your credit report and looking for accounts and applications you did not open. You can also review your Social Security Earnings and Benefits statement to ensure no one else is using your social security number for employment and enroll in online and mobile banking security alerts that will bring suspicious activity to your attention immediately.

“The tools are there to help, but without the customer’s vigilance in being very careful, things can slip through the cracks,” says Angela Brusa, vice president and director of marketing at Bank of Stockton.

“It is our hope that consumers study the tips

and continue to say on top of the latest scams to be wise.”

If something does not feel right, take a moment to be skeptical. If you think you may have been a victim of fraud or an attempted scam, call your bank. They will be able to help sort through the details and assist with protecting your account. “Don’t ever be afraid to call the bank and ask—that’s what we are here for,” Angela says.

Get Straight Teeth Without Breaking The Bank

The average cost of braces can range anywhere from $3,000-10,000 dependent on individual needs, which is no small fee for most families, especially those who have to treat more than one kid. There are some steps, however, that families can take to reduce the overall cost, and the process starts before the braces are ever put on.

Dr. Mickey Samra, who owns and practices at Samra Orthodontics in Stockton, suggests asking a few questions at the consultation, including:

1. Can the down payment or monthly payments options be reduced?

2. Can the monthly payments be extended past treatment time?

3. Are retainers and follow-up retainer visits included in the cost for braces?

4. Are there any discounts for family members that are also in treatment at the same office or payment in full?

These four questions not only open the door for conversations surrounding the financial side of braces but also help families prepare for overall costs. After all, it can be extremely disheartening

to receive multiple bills for charges you expected to be included. And because all orthodontists are different, there isn’t a cookie-cutter answer to the above.

Statistics show that the average cost of braces in San Joaquin County is about $4,000 all-in. That being said, costs can vary greatly.

When it sounds hard to manage, flexible financing can make braces more affordable. You don’t have to have the money all upfront. Typically plans are spread out over the course of the agreed upon treatment. For example, if your child is scheduled to have braces for 24 months, the bill will be calculated over that time period (and may require a down payment). “Some

offices offer flexible financing and will allow the monthly payments to be spread out over 30 months even if the treatment plan is 24 months of braces,” Dr. Samra says.

Always request a free consultation to talk specifics about both cost and care. This will help your family plan for the financial side of straighter teeth.

Buying a house is a big commitment— especially if you plan to stay in it for 30+ years. In fact, 30 years is the standard mortgage term. However, there are big benefits to paying off your home early, including less money spent on interest.

For a conventional 30-year mortgage, Lance McHan, a California real estate professional based in Stockton, suggests making additional payments toward your principal balance to achieve early payoff. You can do this by paying more than your monthly mortgage owed on a month to month basis or by making large lump sum payments to reduce the mortgage balance.

To achieve this, budgeting is crucial. “Manage your budget meticulously to allocate extra funds towards your mortgage,” he suggests. “Cutting unnecessary expenses and directing windfalls, such as tax refunds or bonuses, to your mortgage can expedite the payoff process.” You can also consider making payments more often. “Consider biweekly payments,” he says. “Splitting your monthly mortgage payment into two biweekly payments results in 26 half-payments or 13 full payments annually. This extra payment each year accelerates the overall

PAY OFF YOUR MORTGAGE in Less Than 30 Years

repayment process.”

Homeowners can choose to utilize both of these strategies concurrently to make an even larger dent in their mortgage balance. While these strategies work for most, it is important to talk to your lender to choose the best strategy for you. For starters, you’ll want to be sure that the extra payments are applied to the principal balance. A financial adviser can also help you brainstorm strategies that coincide with your overall financial profile and goals.

“You can create a more aggressive and efficient approach to paying off your mortgage ahead of schedule,” Lance says. Some people, for example, may start with

a 15-year mortgage term, which results in a higher monthly payment but lowers the overall interest owed and keeps your mortgage balance low. If you’re interested, your real estate agent or lender can offer additional tips and tricks for early payoff.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors CLOSE TO HOME

One of the most important aspects of designing a master planned community is in creating a balance between the “built environment”—homes, communityserving buildings, offices and retail—and the outdoor environment. River Islands in Lathrop, a successful master planned community in Northern California, has carefully delineated areas for active and passive outdoor enjoyment throughout its approximately 5,000 acre footprint. One of the earliest decisions in creating the first neighborhoods within River Islands was in locating man-made lakes, parks, playing fields, and a trail system proximate to the homes themselves. As a result, there are homes with docks along the first twelve lakes built—and the Boathouse Restaurant straddles two lakes for exceptional views, as well. Thirteen more lakes are planned for the future. A dozen parks are already open

or getting ready for their openings, some with lawn areas, picnic equipment, sports fields, or play equipment. Islanders Field, a baseball stadium, is a landmark already.

The Joyce and Bennie Gatto Trail, dedicated to a couple who helped shape Lathrop into a wonderful hometown, has several segments open, with more to come every year until it completes an approximately 16-mile ring around the community. The trail starts along the San Joaquin River and offers unique views of the river that change with every season. Last year, the American Heart Association held its fall heart/stroke walk on the trail and attracted almost 1,500 participants to share a sense of purpose and enjoy the river.

For the first time, homes are now being built with river views. The San Joaquin River is the longest river in Central California, starting in the High Sierra

and spilling out into the San Francisco Bay. As a watershed, San Joaquin County attracts migrating birds, which can be viewed from the new home neighborhood, aptly called The Shores. More than 3,500 homes have been sold at River Islands. The master plan includes neighborhoods for approximately 15,000 residences. More lakes, more parks, playing fields, and playgrounds, and more links to the trail system are included in future plans. The Welcome Center is open daily from noon – 5 PM, daily.

Taking a vacation doesn’t have to mean long lines through airport security and thousands of dollars spent on travel. A getaway can be as simple as exploring your own backyard, giving yourself permission to play tourists for a day—or long weekend. Enter: the staycation.

A staycation is essentially a vacation enjoyed in your own town. And when it comes to Stockton, trust us when we say there is plenty to explore. But when it comes to planning a staycation worth its price—and the potential time away from other responsibilities—there’s a few key elements to consider.

First, location. While staycation means staying close to home, it usually doesn’t mean keeping to your neighborhood. Instead, choose a locale that feels different from your everyday. Also, make sure there is plenty to do nearby. The idea of a staycation involves plenty of rest and relaxation—no long drives. A downtown locale, for that reason, is often first pick; a place where you can walk to dinner and most of your entertainment needs.

Another key piece of the puzzle is a hotel with enough amenities to keep you busy. In fact, during a staycation, you don’t have to leave your accommodations unless

Plan the Perfect STAYCATION

you want to. In Stockton, the waterfront is a big draw, with gorgeous surroundings, delicious restaurants, and quite a few events on the calendar. And if you choose a stay at University Plaza Waterfront Hotel, you can enjoy that waterfront view from the comfort of a hot tub and pool, surrounding by cozy daybeds. You can also peep those Southern California-style palm trees from the on-site restaurant, Delta Bistro, or through the windows of your stylish room. There are even parlor suites available to help you feel like a king for the night. And don’t forget the courtyard, perfect for lounging on a sunny day and playing games with family and friends.

When you’re not dining on pancake platters in the morning and lemon pesto pork chops at night, you can explore what the surroundings have to offer. The Downtown Stockton Marina hosts summer events and offers kayak and boat rentals. It’s also home to some of the area’s best restaurants, including Garlic Brothers and Bob’s on the Marina.

Nearly 3 million Americans suffer from glaucoma, a group of diseases that can cause damage to the eye’s optic nerve from increased pressure in the eye resulting in vision loss and sometimes blindness. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world after cataracts.

Glaucoma treatment usually involves medications that lower the eye pressure; however, studies have found that patient compliance is a major issue— meaning most glaucoma patients do not take their medications routinely or correctly, and therefore are suffering additional vision loss. To combat this issue of non-compliance (patients not using there eyedrops correctly), the ophthalmologists at Zeiter Eye may recommend either laser or surgery to permanently lower eye pressure.

If surgery is not an option, it’s extremely important to prioritize taking medication eyedrops as directed. Common barriers to patient compliance include medication costs, forgetting to

take medications, misunderstanding the medication prescribed, negative side effects, inconvenience, and incorrect application.

Open and honest conversations with your doctors can help mitigate non-compliance with glaucoma eye drops. For starters, generic versions of medications or even changing pharmacies can possibly lower the associated costs. Also, patients need to understand the importance of being compliant with their eyedrop medications. Because glaucoma is a progressive disease, eyesight can continue to deteriorate unless patients are compliant with medications. So, even if your vision is only slightly compromised now, it may get worse over time without medication.

To combat forgetfulness, a routine may be helpful. Take your medication at the same time every day and perhaps at the same time as your other medications. You can even set an alarm as a daily reminder.

While side effects can be inconvenient, they are minimal in comparison to disease progression. Instead of avoiding the prescribed drops, treat redness and burning with artificial tears. If you are afraid the eyedrops are not effective or if you are having side effects from the drops, consult your physician. It is possible that you are not putting the drops in correctly.

At the end of the day, glaucoma can be a blinding disease; however, taking anti-glaucoma medication as prescribed and keeping your exams every few months can keep your eyesight from deteriorating. If you have concerns, reach out to your ophthalmologist.

Finding quality employees can be difficult, especially in the current climate. Instead of wasting valuable resources on sourcing the perfect candidate, partnering with a staffing agency can help streamline the process, bringing your company superior talent for less.

Staffing agencies are focused on hiring; they use all their time and resources toward that endeavor.

Hosting recruitment events, partnering with colleges and vocational schools, and accumulating employee referrals are part of ongoing efforts to maintain a qualified workforce.

“Our goal is to place a candidate in a position where they can grow into the opportunities available or even into retirement,” says Tena Runyon-Denuit, vice president of Hedy Holmes Staffing. “We take pride in our quality matches and love to hear success stories from our clients and employees.”

In-house marketing coordinators focus on obtaining the best recruits by utilizing tools such as online job boards and other avenues of advertising. “Our team is continually establishing and maintaining relationships with industry professionals, community leaders, business partners, and candidates to generate referrals and

HIRE QUALITY EMPLOYEES Without Breaking the Bank

recommendations. Networking events, industry conferences, and professional associations provide opportunities to connect with potential candidates,” Tena says.

When your company needs additional staffing, an agency has a pool of qualified, ready-to-work people available. Not only is there a focus on fair wages that work for clients and employees, but a lot of time and money is saved when companies don’t have to focus on recruiting.

Another perk is onboarding temporary staff using a trial-and-error approach. Hiring a new employee can be expensive, but a staffing agency takes on the onboarding procedures and costs, allowing companies to try someone out before converting the employee to their internal team. In the end, this allows the company to ensure someone is a good fit before committing while also making sure the employee will be happy in the long term.

Ultimately the goal of achieving a balance

between cost and quality is very important. At Hedy Holmes, the agency invests in candidate screenings and assessments, and tailors recruitment solutions to individual client needs and budgets. The company utilizes technology to build a candidate database, negotiate contracts between parties, measure performance metrics, and to provide additional value-added services. At the end of the day, the result is a collective of ready-to-work talent at your fingertips, prepared to take on the required tasks and build a long-lasting relationship with your company.

PRIORITIZE A Healthy Pregnancy

Ahealthy pregnancy is perhaps best categorized as a pregnancy where mothers are in as little discomfort as possible, prior health conditions are under control, and risks of complications have been reduced. Having a healthy pregnancy starts before conception. “The first step a woman should perform when getting ready to conceive is to have a physical exam with their OB-GYN or primary care physician,” says Dr. Bridget Norman-Malme, assistant chief from the department of women’s health at Kaiser Permanente Central Valley. This appointment serves to ensure all chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension are in control and will not impact the pregnancy. “The next step is to start taking prenatal vitamins. Prenatal vitamins should be taken at least three months prior to trying to conceive. That way, women will have

the best chance of protecting their babies against certain birth defects, the most common being spina bifida.”

During pregnancy, maintaining a healthy weight and eating healthful foods to fuel the pregnancy, including five daily servings of fruits and vegetables, lends to optimal health for mother and baby. “Being overweight increases a woman’s chance of developing diabetes and hypertension, which can increase her and her baby’s risk of becoming ill during pregnancy,” Dr. Norman-Malme says. It’s also important to reduce or remove external stressors that can contribute to other health issues, including depression, and stay active to support that healthy weight and reduce fatigue. “During a health[y] pregnancy, a woman should be able to stay active, participate in her family and work life, and feel emotionally balanced.”

“At Kaiser Permanente, we focus on prevention to allow women to achieve the best health possible prior to becoming

pregnant. Once a woman enters prenatal care, they are paired with a highly skilled physician or nurse practitioner who partners with her to achieve her goal of having a healthy pregnancy,” Dr. Norman-Malme says. There are also additional resources available to women through the health education department that focus on weight management, breastfeeding, and chronic condition care. That attention to detail follows through to the end of the pregnancy—and beyond—with a high-quality and safe care.

DAMAR HAMLIN BRINGS THE LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION TO THE HEADLINES

The world stopped when Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field in Cincinnati, while his team, the Buffalo Bills, were playing the Bengals. What unfolded next was unprecedented, resulting in, cardiac arrest, on-field resuscitation, and eventually, a canceled game.

So, what happened to Damar Hamlin?

Doctors have been floating theories across social media, but what we do know is that #3 suffered from SCD, or sudden cardiac arrest, which refers to any event that leads to a sudden loss of heart function and consciousness. It happened after Damar took what looked like a routine a hit to the chest. SCD refers to sudden cardiac death.

Dr. Ramin Manshadi has his own theories about what happened on the field that day. Admitting he cannot say 100 percent what the cause, his professional opinion after watching the slow-motion replay is that Damar suffered a commotio Cordis, a condition

in which if one gets hit in the chest right when the ventricle is electrically relaxing, it can precipitate into a very pathologic arrhythmia, which will lead to pump dysfunction and if electrical activity is not immediately restored, it can lead to sudden cardiac death. “This is why an AED can help save lives,” he says.

As far as preventing commotio cordis, there isn’t much to be done. “Electrolyte imbalance, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, some medications, or some genetic predisposition can all cause malignant arrhythmia. One would think that this could potentiate the effect of commotio Cordis. The bottom line, stay away from [the] above, and more importantly, all schools should have AEDs in close proximity to any contact sports,” Dr. Manshadi says. If none of these underlying issues exist, it comes down to luck. “You cannot really prevent it in a contact sport. Yet, it is very, very rare.”

If you suspect someone near you

may be suffering an SCA, act quickly. Anyone who is around athletes can and should learn both CPR and AED use, skills Dr. Manshadi says his teens learned recently. “If someone goes down and is unconscious, one has to check for a pulse, and if there is no pulse, one starts CPR and uses AEDs.”

The upside is while not all SCA outcomes are positive, young athletes have a better chance of recovery. “If someone is young and they used AED… within three minutes, then full recovery is expected.”

The perfect wedding is low on stress. While worries will inevitably pop up as you plan your nuptials, the more at ease bride and groom feel, the better the whole experience will be. To take the stress out of planning, take some advice from the professionals. Afterall, they are experts in helping you get hitched without a hitch!

Perhaps most important is delegating tasks. Hand over the reins to a professional. Selecting a venue that offers day-of coordinating, set-up, and clean-up will undoubtedly help as you move responsibilities from your plate to other’s. If the venue offers packages for rehearsal dinners, as well, that can help pare down costs and tasks.

Perhaps most important is that a property is prepared for weddings. Instead of getting married somewhere off the beaten path, a wedding venue is already primed and ready to host a big day affair. “Our gorgeous property offers multiple aesthetics for your picture perfect wedding,” says Teri Lawrence, owner of Viaggio Estate and Winery “While we are spacious, there are options to host intimate weddings, like our Secret Garden surrounded by willow trees, white roses, and wildflowers.” This way, there are less items to bring in including rented furniture and decorative florals.

HAVE THE WEDDING of Your DREAMS

Teri’s best advice for planning for a wedding—pandemic or no pandemic—is focusing on the three areas most important to you. “For example, if you want a beautiful venue, great photographs, and your dream wedding dress, budget for those three and compromise other areas,” she says. Compromises may be on catering costs, the size of your guest list, or decorations.

Planning for a wedding is hectic anytime but putting pen to paper during a global pandemic comes with extra stressors. Flexibility will help get brides through, so you don’t have to put off your wedding plans if the COVID-19 situation takes a turn. At Viaggio, weddings can be rescheduled up to

one year after the original wedding date. And, there is flexibility in wedding size and space, with areas set to handle outdoor affairs of more than 500, 350-480 guests indoors, or more intimate parties throughout the property for brides who are focused on a minimony. “We can work with any special accommodations and concerns you may have,” Teri assures.

Fighting obvious signs of aging can feel like a full-time job—and one that doesn’t always have consistent results. Caring for your body both inside and out, however, can help fight the obvious signs of aging, and it you’re looking to shave off a few years fast, Aesthetic Lab in Modesto has a few suggestions.

“Each one of our appointments is catered to the patient's needs and their aesthetic goals,” says Gifty Aidoo, FNP-C, owner of Aesthetic Lab. “If someone is focused on antiaging specifically, we would recommend fillers, skin laser rejuvenation, and meeting with one of our aestheticians for a full, comprehensive skin assessment.”

It’s during this initial meeting that patients can discuss budget, timeline, concerns, and expectations. For example, if a specific event such as a wedding or reunion has you on a tight deadline for results, that will be taken into consideration. This is also the right time to discuss managing expectations. While the right combination of beauty appointments can have a drastic effect on your overall appearance, results can vary.

“Managing client expectations starts with patient education. This is done by educating the patient on the efficacy

LOOK YOUNGER in Three Appointments or Less

of the products, the duration of time they can expect for healing, and allowing for the patient to ask any questions they may have,” Gifty says.

While aesthetic treatments including fillers, Botox, microneedling, minimally invasive face lifts, hair restoration, and more can offer almost immediate results (after recovery time), continued care at home may maximize positive results. “Patients can pair their aesthetic treatments with medical grade skincare, as well as using an at home chemical peel like the multi-acid by Obagi to enhance results.”

Skincare is never a one-size-fits-all process, and that’s why working with a professional on a continuing basis is the best

way to achieve results. Depending what stage of aging you are at and your personal goals, treatments will vary. “Aging is a continuing process that occurs over the course of the life span,” Gifty says. “Because of this, providing services that are catered to the different stages of aging is vital when supporting patients during their beauty journey.”

KNOW WHEN TO VISIT THE OBED (obstetric department)triage

An obstetrics emergency department is an extension within the labor and delivery unit. It is there to provide immediate care to women who have a pregnancy and/or postpartum related issue that requires immediate attention. “The OB triage at St. Joseph’s is staffed with OB triage nurses and OB physicians who provide around-the-clock care,” says Michelle Knipper, a registered nurse at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

“Women commonly present with complaints of abdominal pain, contractions, preterm labor, elevated blood pressure, preeclampsia, vaginal bleeding, rupture of membranes, UTI symptoms, and decreased or no fetal movement,” Michelle explains. These are all conditions that require emergency services but are also best suited for OB staff to handle.

The OBED is different than visiting a regular emergency room or scheduling an appointment with your OB. For starters, it is meant to treat symptoms and conditions that cannot wait for a later appointment. It is also there specifically to treat pregnant women 16 weeks and above who present with obstetrical-related complaints. Patients will continue to go to their regular OB appointments for routine prenatal visits and non-emergency issues. The OBED is not meant to intercept routine care or provide care for anyone who isn’t pregnant or postpartum.

If you’re pregnant or currently in the postpartum stage, a visit to the OBED or OB triage may be necessary if you experience strong contractions or abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, leaking of vaginal fluid, uncontrolled blood sugars, and/or decreased or no fetal

movement. These symptoms may be indicative of underlying conditions, such as preeclampsia, uncontrolled diabetes, or incompetent cervixpreterm labor, all of which require an emergency visit.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, visit your nearest OBED or OB triage. If you think you are experiencing a potentially lifethreatening medical emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately.

INVEST IN YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE TODAY with a strong start

Children who attend a quality preschool have a great start to healthy brain development. Preschool provides a the strong, necessary foundation for the development of language, math, and social skills required for academic and socialemotional success in kindergarten and beyond. Yet the price of quality early education programs can seem out of reach for many.

Get your child started on the road to an excellent future by enrolling them in a Children Achieve Maximum Potential (CAMP) preschool with the Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) of San Joaquin County. The CAPC has been providing quality early education programs since 1978. Today, they serve more than 900 children a day through free and subsidized Head Start and statefunded programs. To enroll in one of these programs, here are the steps to take:

1. DETERMINE WHETHER YOU’RE INCOME ELIGIBLE. Families with an annual income at or below the U.S. federal poverty guidelines are eligible for the programs offered in CAMP preschools. Children in foster care, children who are experiencing homelessness, and children from families who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are eligible as well. Families are encouraged to call an enrollment specialist to determine eligibility.

2. ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN A CAMP PRESCHOOL. CAMP preschools are open to children ages 0 through 5 years old. There are multiple school sites throughout San Joaquin County, ensuring a convenient option for all families! Home-based programs are also available to support families in learning to be their child’s first teacher.

3. SET UP A COLLEGE SAVINGS ACCOUNT FOR YOUR 3-YEAR-OLD. Through a partnership with the educational nonprofit San Joaquin A+, CAMP Preschool will start a $750 savings account for each 3-year-old or 4-year-old enrolled in their program. The money will grow overtime and can be used to pay for college or vocational training when the child graduates from high school.

CAMP Preschool focuses on whole family wellness. CAMP Preschool teachers work closely with each family to identify their unique needs and ensure they are connected to the necessary programs and supports that strengthen them. Families will have direct access to the more than 20 family strengthening programs offered through CAPC anytime they need support.

Learn more by calling a staff member or visiting the CAMP Preschool website.

Hospice can be a daunting word for many—hospice is, by design, endof-life care. If you are considering hospice, there are important things to know and ask in your search. Most importantly, you have the power to say when and the power to say where. It is the patient’s right not only when to enter hospice care, but with whom. Here are other questions to ask:

• Are you non-profit or for-profit? Almost 75% of hospices today are for-profit. A recent report from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission found that while both non-profits and for-profits received the same amount of Medicare money per patient, for-profits often spend less on patient care. That means fewer visits, less pain medication, and less family support. Non-profits are often older, partially due to hospice’s beginnings as a volunteer service.

• Are you approved by Medicare? If a hospice is not approved by Medicare, Medicare won’t cover services provided. Make sure the hospice you are looking at is certified.

• What staff are available nights and weekends? Being a caregiver for a loved one is a 24/7 job. Ask if they have hospice-certified staff 24/7 and how to reach someone

Choose a HOSPICE Provider

overnight.

• Do you have a palliative care program? Palliative care is a fancy term for “pain management.” All hospice care is palliative care, but not all palliative care is hospice care. Some palliative programs allow patients to continue with curative treatments. If hospice is needed, you can transition to it with a team you know.

• Do you have an inpatient unit? Inpatient units provide respite care for patients and their families. There are many reasons someone on hospice might need inpatient facility support and it’s worth considering that added benefit.

• What support do you provide families? Ask if your provider helps train families in caring

for a loved one at the end of life. After death, does the hospice provide any sort of assistance with grief support or closing personal affairs? End-of-life care can be daunting. Knowing your rights and what to expect goes a long way in making that decision.

Paris is for Lovers

A ROMANTIC ESCAPE FOR TWO

Paris didn’t earn the nickname City of Love without first dialing up the romance. The 19th-century cityscape is France’s capital, and a global center of art, fashion, culinary delights, and more. After all, what sounds more divine than slipping away on a quixotic getaway where you can stroll hand-in-hand along the River Seine or shop the luxury stores along Boulevard Saint-Germain and sip regional wines in local caves across the city? If you’re ready to book a trip to Paris with your beau, check out our itinerary first: a collection of cultural outings across the city’s 20 arrondissements. And bonus points for visiting Paris in 2024—the summer Olympics are set to be hosted here.

TAKE IN THE SIGHTS

A trip to Paris is hardly complete without visiting the famed Eiffel Tower. The wrought iron lattice was completed in 1889 and is now the most symbolic landmark in the city. Instead of simply walking the perimeter, schedule a lunch or dinner inside the twinkling tower (which sparkles every hour on the hour for five minutes from dusk to 1 AM)

Two culinary options are available for reservations including a brasserie on the first floor and the Michelin-starred Jules Verne, which has a reputation for turning out some of the best cuisine in Paris.

You also won’t want to miss the Louvre, arguably one of the world’s most popular museums. It houses thousands of works and it’s nearly impossible to see it all in a day. Highlights include the Mona Lisa. Outside of the Louvre is Le Café Marly overlooking the iconic glass pyramid that marks the Louvre’s entrance. Here you can sip champagne and enjoy a small breakfast before embarking on a mission to fully indulge yourself in the art around you.

SAVE MONEY

If you have several landmarks on your list, take advantage if discounts using The Paris Pass from GoCity, which comes with a separate Paris Museum Pass.

Also nearby is the Les Caves du Louvre, a formerly royal-owned wine cellar that dates back to the 18th century. While wine bars in Paris are referred to as caves, this one actually houses an underground cellar complete with a guided tasting. It’s located a few blocks from the Louvre, but an easy—and scenic—walk.

The Arc de Triomphe is another landmark worth a visit. A climb up a dizzyingly narrow spiral staircase will take guests to the top for 360-degree views.

The Latin Quarter boasts a trio of landmarks walking distance to each other: Notre Dame, the Pantheon, and the Luxembourg Gardens. A tour of Notre Dame offers a walk around the perimeter, details on the restoration process, and access to the

crypt underneath. While the inside is temporarily closed to the public, a visit offers a snapshot in history worthy of experiencing. Expert Tip: Just a stone’s throw away, Bertillon Ice Cream is a local’s favorite.

Across the street, café culture is in full swing. If you’ve ever seen a movie filmed in Paris you know it’s customary to sit outside and people watch as you sip coffee or wine. Before dinner hours, seats face the street. For dinner, restaurants turn their tables inward so diners can face each other.

You’re also not far from the Shakespeare and Company Bookstore, an English-language bookstore that is also a famous tourist stop. Dating back to 1951, it is named after Sylvia Beach's bookstore of the same name,

which supposedly had famous literary visitors on Paris’ Left Bank.

The neoclassical columned Pantheon serves many purposes in Paris. The monument was once a church and its ornate statues and colorful tapestries make it a sight to behold both inside and out. Plus, there’s a crypt underneath that houses many wellknown people, including Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, and Marie Curie. The real treat, however, is walking to the top to take in the view. You’ll need a separate entrance ticket and a reserved booking for that part of the tour.

ROMANTIC EXPERIENCES FOR TWO

Many of Paris’ best attractions are made even better when you’re sharing them with the one you love. But if you’re looking to really dive into the couple culture, it’s important to focus on what you enjoy.

For foodies, the Latin Quarter is home to Les Deux Magots. Dating back to 1885, the corner café is reminiscent of many brasseries throughout Paris, but this location specifically is known for its sipping chocolate, rich and served with Chantilly cream, a decadent delight perfect for sharing. Nearby, at Chez Julian, love is bound to be in the air. The French bistro offers indoor and outdoor seating, the latter accompanied by twinkling lights in a sweet garden setting. The stylish décor inside oozes romance with dim lighting and a corner bar while you dine on escargot and other French delicacies.

Another way to dine across the city is with a food tour. Many

Disneyland Paris

neighborhoods offer their own, but if you haven’t visited Le Marais yet, now is your chance. SoMa (South Marais) is home to hip boutiques, art galleries, and plenty of restaurants. A tour through here may stop for fresh croissants, kosher bites, and French onion soup.

For those open to leaving the city for the day, a trip to the Loire Valley is perfect for castle viewing and wine tasting. Several tours take the hassle out of the planning if you don’t wish to figure out the train system on your own. Through Viator, the Loire Valley Castles & Wine Tasting Trip, includes three castle stops, two with wineries on site where tastings are available. Perhaps most noticeable is the Château de Chambord, the castle known as the inspiration behind the Beast’s abode in Beauty & The Beast. Plus, there is a small store, food options, and wine by the glass, as well as a wine cave and a casual street market.

Another area worth visiting is the Monmartre, an artist’s neighborhood since 1871. The steep hills offer a workout, but the views are worth the work. The Basilica of Sacre-Coeur de Montmartre is a domed, white church perched at the top of a hill. Inside, you can view the stained-glass windows and interior mosaics, plus there’s a crypt. Completed in 1914, it proffers some of the best views of the city. Nearby is a bridge decorated in locks where you an write your names and vow your love forever.

Don’t rush through an afternoon here. In addition to walking tours of the area, there is a petite train ride that makes exploration easier than on foot. La Mere Catherine serves a hearty lunch (a nice reprieve from the smaller portions most French eateries supply) and Au Cadet de Gascogne offers outdoor dining in the middle of the marketplace, plus champagne. Here you

can stare into each other’s eyes over macarons and cocktails while local artists paint in the square.

A well-known attraction here is the Moulin Rouge, a theatre dating back to 1889. Féerie is performed in the famous windmill theater. The high-energy and vibrant stage production is a collection of songs, colorful costumes, and wild antics. The show is performed in French, but you should have no trouble following along as dancers make their way from a lively circus to a boisterous jungle and everywhere in between. To set the mood, begin with dinner, or sip a bottle of champagne at a table meant for two. It's likely to be one of your favorite experiences in the city.

Perhaps the best way to spend a day in Paris is by walking along the River Seine. The river flows through much of Paris and offers a scenic way to stroll from Notre Dame to the Eiffel Tower. You’ll pass the Musee d’Orsay, another popular stop off for art and culture that many say rivals the Louvre. At some places, you can leave the upper sidewalk and meander the path closest to the river. Chairs sit along the asphalt stretch for lazy sipping and people watching as many walk their dogs, skateboard, and ride bikes.

For those who are still kids at heart, Disneyland Paris is another attraction just outside of the city. Located about 45 minutes by train, it’s a straight shot from the city

center to the Happiest Place on Earth. Start by snapping photos in front of the cotton-candy pink castle that marks the theme park’s entrance, and then make a point of visiting the displays unique to the Paris park. For example, the castle houses a sinister animatronic dragon beneath its depths and a playful Alice in Wonderland-themed maze, both of which don’t exist in California. Some of the rides are similar but different, such as Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain (a more intense version of Space Mountain), a faster-paced Thunder Mountain Railroad, an upside-down and thrilling Indiana Jones, and an entirely reimagined Phantom Manor (Haunted Mansion) and Pirates of the Caribbean. Expert Tip: Sometimes champagne carts are posted around the park.

Walt Disney Studios Park is Europe’s answer to California Adventure and Avenger’s Campus. Here is where you’ll find Marvelthemed rides similar to those in California but also a few standouts that don’t exist in America including Crush’s Coaster, Avenger’s Assemble: Flight Force, and Cars Road Trip.

Downtown Disney is smaller here with just a few restaurants and souvenir shops. You can take an air balloon up from here and see the parks from a new vantage point. The aerophile balloons are popular in Paris, as well as at the parks.

Wine Dine WINE SCENE

“Going green” is an honorable endeavor for a person or family to undertake, and when a business does it, that undertaking often evolves into a new normal for doing business. The passion of sustainability is remarkable at McManis Family Vineyards, and their aspirations to lessening the carbon footprint of the business is equal parts common sense, forethought, and technology.

Dirk Heuvel serves as the vice president of vineyard operations at McManis Family Vineyards. “We’re one of the big estate-grown wineries where we farm our own grapes, bring them in and process them ourselves, and make wine out of them,” Dirk says. “We basically do everything up to the distribution process.”

Dirk recently completed his 15th harvest for McManis Family Vineyards, and he enthusiastically embraces sustainability efforts on both the farming and winery sides of the business. “We started in 2011 and certified our first vineyard in Modesto, and since then... 100% of our farming operation is all certified, about 3600 acres, through a program called the Lodi Rules,” Dirk explains. Lodi Rules is the oldest sustainability program in existence for wineries.

Water conservation is one of the biggest focuses in sustainability

efforts at McManis, and 100% of all water used at the facility is reclaimed, captured, treated, and reused, including all rainwater. “To produce a gallon of wine, it could take the average winery like five to 13 gallons of water,” Dirk says. “We’re (using) under one gallon of water to produce a gallon of wine.”

That conservation comes from not using full oak barrels in the wine production process. Instead, oak is added into the stainless-steel tanks in which the wine is made. In doing this, less space is needed for barrel storage. The smallest wine fermenter in use at McManis is a 50-ton fermenter and the largest, a 200-ton fermenter.

McManis’s efforts stand out to retailers like Costco and Whole Foods, that place value on sustainability efforts by its suppliers. Then, there is growing interest from savvy consumers about the wines they drink. Dirk explains, “I would hope that the consumer, when they’re looking at buying a bottle of wine, that they’re looking for a product that is certified sustainable.”

There is not much waste by-product produced by the winery, and it is certified under the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). Dirk says, “That program specifically is a continual improvement program. Every year, you have to be showing improvements.” A recycling program is also in place and the implementation of solar at the 24/7 operation.

An additional improvement coming soon is the utilization of lightweight glass. “We’re looking at using about 30% less weight on the glass and less material, so we’re using less of our natural resources to get the product to the consumer.”

Recently McManis bought an electric autonomous tractor. “We’re working with a company out of Livermore called Monarch Tractor and they’re the ones developing this technology right now,” Dirk explains. McManis also has three electric UTVs in use at the winery. These efforts save on labor costs.

In 2016, McManis Family Vineyards won a green medal award from The Wine Institute for “Business” and in 2022 they won the medal for “Community.” The awards program was specifically created for wineries and vineyards.

“One of the things we realized as a farming operation when we certified that first vineyard—we were already doing a lot of what it took to become certified sustainable, it was just documenting everything we were doing and then having a third party come in and audit our farming operation,” Dirk finishes.

Fast Southern Cuisine

RALLY’S OPENS ITS FIRST LOCATION IN LODI

Move over McDonald’s, there’s a new fast food joint in town. The prominent, Southern-based fast-food chain is coming to Lodi Avenue, taking over the building that was once Long John Silver’s.

Founded in 1986, the menu is heavy in fast casual staples, including burgers, wings, and fries, but all with a southern edge. Started in Louisville, customers can expect smoky BBQ sauce, sweet onion flavors, and crispy fish sandwiches. Its 317 locations are mostly spread across the southern states and the Midwest, operating under the names Rally’s and Checkers, but there are 42 locations in California with the closet existing in Citrus Heights and Sacramento.

With so many menu items, ranging from blue and red slushies to a Spicy Chicken Double (fried chicken patties seasoned with a bit of a kick), what should you order first? Check out our list of five of the top must-try menu items available exclusively at Rally’s.

1. TRIPLE BACONZILLA. This triple-decker burger is sure to be a mouthful. Boasting three, large, hand-seasoned, 100% beef patties, that’s just the beginning. The sandwich is piled high with four slices of crispy bacon, two slices of melty American cheese, an additional helping of melted cheddar cheese, ketchup, and mayonnaise, all on a bakery-style bun.

2. BACON PEPPER JACK BUFORD. A Buford is typically a name for someone lacking intelligence but ordering up this doubledecker may be the smartest decision you’ve ever made. The two beef patties are just the beginning, stacked with Pepper Jack cheese, two slices of bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, Sweet & Smoky BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, and even more bacon.

3. BUFFALO FRY-SEASONED TENDERS. Would it even be a southern fast food joint if there wasn’t the promise of some heat? These all-white meat tenders are doused in Checkers & Rally’s Famous Seasoned Fry batter before they are tossed in the restaurant’s medium buffalo sauce.

4. GARLIC PARMESAN LOADED FRIES. Rally’s famous crinkle cut fries are just the beginning of this loaded dish. Fries come covered in a garlic parmesan sauce, sprinkled with smoky bacon crumbles, and then finished with a mix of melted cheddar cheese and Kraft® parmesan cheese.

5. FUNNEL CAKE FRIES. Transport yourself to the fair any time of year with this fresh take on a nostalgic treat. These fryshaped desserts taste just like the funnel cake you’re used to, dusted with powdered sugar and served in increments of ten.

Soup for the Wine Lover’s Soul

SIP AND SAVOR DURING OAK FARM VINEYARDS’ EVENT SERIES

Sitting under the stars, listening to live music from near and far, a delicious glass of wine to sip on and a warm bread bowl of soup to enjoy – does life get any better? Oak Farm Vineyards brings joy and vibrancy to Thursday nights with their event series, Oak Farm Soup Nights.

Heather Panella, co-owner of Oak Farm Vineyards, runs the family business along with her husband, Dan. If you haven’t been to the winery, a visit soon is a must. Oak Farm Vineyards is part of San Joaquin Valley’s history. Located at the historic DeVries estate, dotted with remarkable centuries-old oak trees, it was originally built in 1860 by San Joaquin Valley pioneer William Devries. The Panella family purchased the property in 2004, replanting and maximizing the estate’s potential with now 70 acres of vineyards, a beautiful and inviting tasting room, and an event space.

Oak Farm established its Thursday evening event series years ago, featuring live musicians. Now, those musicians come from all over, including both local artists and those who travel across the nation to share their gifts.

“We absolutely love sharing great wine accompanied by talented artists with our guests on Thursday nights,” shares Heather. “We already offered scrumptious, handcrafted charcuterie boards, often featuring some local ingredients, during our wine tastings and it occurred to me that there was a great opportunity to share the rich flavors of heart-warming soups on those Thursday nights.”

Heather admits that she herself loves a hearty soup served in a bread bowl, especially during cozy season, and has tremendously enjoyed tasting the creations from regional chefs Oak Farm partners with.

The soups are served in freshly made bread bowls from Genova Bakery in Stockton, and Oak Farms also has loaves from Genova available for sale during wine tastings.

Wine tastings are available seven days a week, except for Thursdays because of the event series, and walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are highly recommended on weekends as the Vineyards are a popular spot to enjoy.

Oak Farm Soup Night is just the beginning. Heather plans to expand this idea and looks forward to the series transforming with the seasons, offering other delicious and freshly made cuisine. The website, and mailing list, will keep you up to date on events and offerings.
