Dentistry Done
Differently!
What if there was a place you could go where you could get crowns done from start where industry-leading dental innovations were created; where everything from usual to complicated dentistry is routine; and where the dentist himself is sought after nationally and internationally to discuss the latest techniques and innovations in dentistry? There is—and it’s right in your own backyard. absolute cutting-edge in dentistry in order to make your visits as short, easy and painless as possible. When Dr. John A. Garza, a licensed general dentist, envisioned opening the location 13 years ago, he vowed to create a locale that was someplace he would want to go if he were the patient. He wanted to create a place that was co-diagnostic and interactive, and where the patient themselves would be able to make a decision about their dental care based on what they were shown could be done via the latest interactive technological tools.
offered are digital ones, which reduce patient doses of radiation by 98%, and computers at the side of each chair so patients can view the x-rays (and other images) along with the dentist. Some patients joke that “it’s like NASA here!” And that’s a good thing. “For example, with our smile makeovers, it takes about three hours to do an 8-tooth makeover. There are TV screens over the patient’s head playing movies, and throughout allows the patient to leave with color, shape and teeth that they want. And because we’re doing it together, they end up with a custom smile, rather than one where a remote lab technician is making the same thing for everybody and you’re hoping that what is sent back for you is what you want. With this technique, the patient is very involved, and we’re able to tweak it as we go,” Dr. Garza explains. The one-visit solutions are possible thanks to the CEREC by Sirona Dental Systems. It’s the world’s only system for the fabrication of all ceramic dental restorations in one busy schedule for dental care! Dr. Garza is also the creator of The Crane, an innovative and industry-changing tool that removes a crown and bridge without the pounding tools dentists used previously. His expertise regarding this device and his extensive knowledge in general is called upon often in a speaking capacity, and he has taught and given lectures everywhere from overseas to nationally at places like the University of Oklahoma and the Southwest Dental Convention. So whether you need a routine cleaning, a root canal, crown, or complete smile makeover, don’t you owe it to yourself to put yourself in the hands of one of the industry’s most respected dentists, at a trusted location that offers the most cutting-edge technologies and services so that you have the easiest and most advanced dental care possible?

Women’s Hair Loss
Why Does it Happen? & What can you do about it? by Angela Spoon
What used to be a “men’s condition” is now quickly becoming a female epidemic. It is scary to think that you could randomly wake up one day and begin to see more hair on the pillow case and less on your head. For women losing their hair, it is a serious blow to femininity and the ideal vision of themselves. We are constantly cutting and coloring to make sure our hair looks the best it can. But what if one day the un-thinkable happens… and it falls out and doesn’t grow back?
1
Question: What causes women’s hair loss?
Answer: Female hair loss can be caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid dis-function, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills).

for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.
quickly as possible and treat that problem. Don’t try to treat it yourself because it wastes time that could be spent growing hair back. I obviously would recommend to call us and then come in for a consultation. Worst case scenario, you can stop the progression of the loss. Best case, we can dramatically reverse your hair loss and regrow hair. We have had numerous cases where a woman was wearing a wig or extensions when they started the treatment. Then 9 months later they were able to remove their wig permanently or stop getting extensions because their hair had gained so much volume and density.
Question: What do your clinics use to help women with thinning hair?
Answer: Depending on the reason
Question: What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with this problem?
Answer: Find the source of the problem as
Female Hair Loss on the Rise In a recent study by the Dermatology Online Journal, it states that at least 10 percent of premenopausal women will experience hair loss and that a staggering 50 percent to 75 percent of women will lose hair after 64 years of age. In a recent report on NBC Online it states these numbers are low and that female hair loss is seriously on the rise.

But why are women losing hair now more than ever? And what can be done about it? After contacting numerous hair loss professionals in the valley, one seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the problem, and this is what he said:
4
Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?
Answer: There certainly is. There are so
many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.
5
Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss?
Answer: A simple patient history is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.
6
Question: Is there maintenance required?
Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

The California raspberry season is now in full swing and the harvest will continue until mid-September. These bumpy, bulbous berries grow well in California because of the coastal climate. Due to our valley’s heat, our region produces the Bababerry and Oregon 1030 varieties best, as they tolerate higher temperatures and full-on sun exposure better than the other more delicate varieties. These tangy berries can be eaten by themselves as a healthy summer snack, or can be used to punch up a rich, savory dish.
Most people know that raspberries pair particularly well with dark chocolate, a decadent flavor combination. A tart crisp or decadent sorbet is also a well known summer splurge. Because of their small size and dainty packaging, you may consider raspberries to be more of a novelty fruit. Try one of our fresh, summery recipes and see how these scrumptious berries add some welcomed pizzazz to your diet. You’ll want to keep them around all season long.

editor’s note
The Heat is On TONY ZOCCOLI PUBLISHER/EDITOR
I think I hear the rest of the country chuckling at us right now. But July in Arizona is no joke. I remember when I first moved to Arizona, it was July and I headed to a local gym in Chandler on a Saturday afternoon. I drove up to the parking lot and didn’t find a single car. “Maybe they are closed,” I thought. I assumed the gym had a power outage or an emergency of some kind causing it to shut its doors in the middle of the day. I parked, walked up the window and peered inside. To my surprise, plenty of people were working out. “Where did they park?” I wondered out loud. I walked around to the side and discovered a small patch of shade, completely crammed with parked cars. “I see how this works,” I declared. Phoenix in July is about doing whatever you can to survive the heat. Luckily, Valley Lifestyles offers up plenty of options. Check out our listing of locales allowing you and your family to beat the heat without having to always revert to the standard mall or movie theater (while we still love those). We also provide San Diego’s hidden gems, as the majority of Phoenicians head out of town this time of year for a heat reprieve.

THE BREEZY BICYCLE LIFE
BICYCLETTE CRUISES ON TO THE LIFESTYLE SCENE BY: LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO: ASHLEY BUGG
Remember back to your childhood when riding a bike meant freedom and fun? Maybe it was the wind blowing through your hair, the chime of your hand bell or the big banana seat, but one thing was for sure; you always had a great time. One creative Valley resident is bringing back the emotion and whimsy of that once carefree lifestyle, but this time, it’s aimed at adult women.

Rebecca Brookson is the entrepreneur that founded Bicyclette (pronounced in French as “bee-see-klet”) in late 2012 and she has created a way to promote a fun lifestyle through fitness by procuring an elegant and stylish assortment of apparel, accessories and décor items to match. Prior to starting Bicyclette, Brookson worked in a high-stress corporate job. She would come home after work, hop on her cruiser for fitness and to unwind from the day. “Every worry would melt away… It represented youth and freedom and was exercise, but didn’t feel like it,” says Brookson. When she considered starting a business, she wanted to do something she felt would make a difference in people’s lives. The cornerstone of Bicyclette is the fun cruiser bike itself. Brookson strongly believes in keeping all her items “stateside-made.” After searching for high-quality vendors, she found Villy Custom in Dallas that makes colorful mix-and-match style cruiser bikes. With bright yellow tires and pink rims, mint frames with pin striping or ice blue frames with classic black tires, there are currently three different limited-edition style cruisers for women available through Villy Custom. However, Bicyclette customers are also welcome to design their own bike using a variety of colors and design concepts. Now, you can custom-design a bike to suit your own special style or personality. 20
VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2013
“I wanted to bring the happiness and joy of bikes into homes and into wardrobes,” Brookson said of her desire to include lifestyle items in the Bicyclette collection. There are crew neck, swoop neck and Superlight tees available, as well as a lightweight cardigan wrap, a zip up hoodie and commuter shirt. Each piece of organic clothing is made in the USA and features the Bicyclette bike logo or the saying “Feel Free” with a winged bicycle escaping from a bird cage. Bicyclette accessories include iPad and Kindle sleeves made from recycled leather, a lightweight scarf and several handcrafted glass and needlepoint necklaces that feature wheel and bicycle motifs. There is also a buttery soft Italian leather clutch bag made of naturally dyed and recycled leather and is available in hot pink or silvery blue and emblazoned with a winged bicycle. Items available for the home include silk pillow covers with a handembroidered bicycle, original artwork bicycle posters and an assortment of different style of note cards. Feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. Her clients are staying active and getting a chance to enjoy some quality exercise and relaxation. “I think
people really like the fact that the bikes are an extension of their personality and it helps them find joy, freedom and health,” says Brookson.

CANCER SURVIVOR FOUNDS ORGANIZATION TO BRING JOY TO KIDS WITH CANCER BY: LYNETTE CARRINGTON
Cancer is a horrible scourge on anyone diagnosed with the disease. Families help their loved ones battle in every way they can. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 20, PeppedUp! CEO and Founder Ron Haberle is now a cancer survivor of nearly 20 years. He was inspired by the experiences of many others like him and wanted to give back to children fighting cancer.

PeppedUp! provides children with some of the simple joys of childhood in the form of movies, music, books and games in an effort to help alleviate some of the pain, fear, frustration and isolation that often come along with a cancer diagnosis. iPads, iPods, Kindles, and other portable devices are gifted to children through the organization and are theirs to keep. Shortly after receiving their 501 (c) status, PeppedUp! began a full-fledged relationship with Cardon Children’s Medical Center. “We also reached out to Phoenix Children’s Hospital,” says Ron Haberle. “They’re now starting to call us and their social workers are requesting iPads for patients.” Mobile devices are not just for use in the hospitals as Haberle noted, children spend many hours in transit to doctors’ appointments during their cancer treatment. It is Haberle’s hope that his organization will grow nationally so PeppedUp! can reach even more children. “Last year we raised about $43,000 and this year we’re slightly behind where I’d like to be,” Haberle said. “We’re trying to keep a nice balance between the amount of people we have contacting us versus the amount of money we have coming into the organization.” Currently, there’s a waiting list for mobile devices for cancer patients. With their newly obtained charity status, Haberle will be looking to secure additional funds through various grants.
On July 14, the Second Annual “Painting for Pep” at The Brush Bar in Scottsdale will take place. This year, participants will make support ribbons for childhood cancer or whatever cause they choose. “There are about 50 seats available and last year about 80 people showed up,” noted Hablerle. To reserve your spot, please visit peppedup.org PeppedUp! was recently honored by Channel 12 News and received the 12 Who Care Award. To find out more information, register a child who needs a device, or find out how you can help, visit peppedup.org or email info@peppedup.org.

LIGHTING UP THE SKY BY LISA MAGOCH JOHNSON
Salt River Tubing TIPS AND TRICKS FOR COOLING OFF
FIREWORKS AND FUN CLOSE TO HOME
BY LISA MAGOCH JOHNSON
It’s summertime and you’re missing those “frigid” 90-degree days. What better way to spend it than hanging out with your friends and tubing down the Salt River. Tubes & shuttle bus service is provided when you get there. You can opt for the 2, 3 or 5 hour float trips when you get there. Before heading out for a day of fun in the sun, here are a few quick reminders. DO NOT FORGET: • Your Driver’s License. You need this for every five tube rentals. • Water. It’s broiling out there. Drink 1-2 glasses per hour to keep hydrated. You need it! • Tennis Shoes. No sandals. All shoes must be closed toe. • Hat and Sunblock. Sunburns are no fun. Slather on the sunscreen. • LIFE VESTS. For those who have trouble swimming. The store has them for purchase only. If you don’t park in Salt River’s parking lot, you need to purchase a Tonto pass available at nearby gas stations. DO NOT BRING: • GLASS BOTTLES: Strictly prohibited. • CHILDREN under 8 or under 4 feet tall. • ALCOHOL. Keep your trip safe and fun. • VALUABLES. Salt River Tubing is not responsible for any lost valuables. It’s better to keep them at home.

TURN UP THE HEAT ON YOUR SUMMER WARDROBE BY: SARAH BEL GRAY, FASHION EDITOR
Just because our surroundings are bare and colorless, doesn’t mean our wardrobe needs to be the same. With the temperatures rising, you might feel like getting dressed in the summer months is more about comfort and keeping cool, and less about fashion and trends. It’s actually not that difficult to pull together a summer outfit that’s not only functional in the desert heat, but also stylish and fashion forward. One of the easiest ways to update your summer wardrobe is to add the hottest colors with simple items like jewelry, a bright clutch and even your nail polish! This season, try topping a pair of slouchy, but perfectly trendy, boyfriend jeans with a great pair of espadrilles and a colorful top—or try an embellished tribal print top with a few bright accessories for an updated look with a bit of personality. A nude pair of sunglasses, topped with a great breathable fedora is perfect for the summer months. Colorful shoes, a lightweight high-lo skirt, and other trendy accessories add the right amount of style and color to any summer outfit. Be sure to check out this season’s hottest items in colors like coral, seafoam, and banana yellow at your favorite local boutiques like LaBella in Queen Creek or Junky Trunk Boutique in Gilbert. Find these and many more great summer pieces at stores like H&M or CottonOn at Chandler Fashion Center.

START SALIVATING WITH THESE LUSCIOUS FROZEN VALLEY DESSERT VENUES BY: JENNIFER PURDIE
Backyard pools, air-conditioning, vacations to chiller places—we all take any means necessary to beat the searing heat. But none are as sweet as a frozen treat. From licking mounds of glossy gelato to love affairs with shaved ice, Valley residents brave their overheated cars to satisfy their sugar cravings in the coolest way possible. We’ve rounded up a variety of locales for family night, date night or just because the temperature gauge reads triple digits. Imagine impressing your date by becoming a “Top Chef” and creating your own flavor of ice cream using scientific methods or becoming number one mom by grabbing a novelty dessert to take home: gelato cake. Let us tempt your palate and cool it down.

FROST GELATO
In July, count on standing in a line at Frost Gelato in SanTan Village. But the reward is worth the wait. This upscale frozen treat shop features freshly made gelato with a myriad of rotating flavors. “We sell five times more sea salt caramel than any other flavor,” says Owner Doug Woelfle. “We also make sorbets; our dairy-free raspberry flavor is the most popular.” The sweet-smelling, swanky store also offers sugar-free and gluten-free options for those with more particular dietary needs. The owners are an infectious, servicedriven husband, wife and daughter team: Doug, Rowena and Kristin, respectively. They decided on a gelato business because “gelato is healthy, half the calories of ice cream and full of flavor. We believed that Frost would do well in Phoenix, specifically in Gilbert,” says Doug. The belief paid off! EDITOR’S PICK:

SUGAR BOWL PALETAS BETTY
Specializing in handmade Mexican fruit and cream pops, this paleteria procures the finest ingredients, makes everything from scratch and grounds the spices whole. “Fresa con crema (strawberry and cream) is our best seller. We use only fresh strawberries when they are in season, and it’s creamy with chunks of strawberry in it. A close second is our chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate) flavor, which is a blend of gourmet chocolate and spice. We use Mexican canela, a variety of cinnamon commonly used in Mexico,” says Betty Alatorre de Hong, president and owner. “Valley residents come for different reasons: locals come to experience unique new flavors in a fresh handmade dessert; visitors to Arizona come to get a good dose of local flavor, and many in the Hispanic community come to get the fresh fruit flavors that they miss from their hometown.”
As one of the most well-known venues in the Valley for ice cream, the Sugar Bowl turns back Father Time for its old-fashioned take on dessert. Celebrating more than 55 years of service, this pink Phoenix treasure sits right in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. The owners give a nod to nearby landmarks with the Camelback Soda, a traditional soda with scoops of vanilla ice cream and an extra pitcher of soda water, as well as the Pinnacle Peak Sundae with ice cream swimming in sauces and whipped cream. SUB ZERO
We’ve all heard cooking is a science. Sub Zero takes this science to another level. This ice cream hot spot says no to boxed products and yes to cryogenics. Although it sounds like a chemistry class, it’s certainly more fun. The staff mixes a batch of ice cream in a bowl and then blasts it with a shot of liquid nitrogen, creating a cloud explosion. Just a few moments later, your treat is a creamy bowl of chilled heaven—and you get to create your own flavor. Sub Zero offers five different bases, 34 ice cream flavors and 32 types of mix-ins. “Customers love it. They all say ‘Wow!’ They think it’s a wonderful, entertaining show. They don’t expect it, but it’s also great ice cream,” says Owner Leon Merkley. EDITOR’S PICK:

SNOSHACK
The SnoShack, currently located in front of The Home Depot on Power rd. and Rittenhouse is totally worthy of the name “shack.” Serving Hawaiian shaved ice, the young and old adore mixing the liquid flavors to create the perfect appetite pleaser. With plenty of syrupy choices, customers can certainly turn their mouth a different shade. Owner R.J. Cushing brought SnoShack to Gilbert by way of neighboring Calif. “I grew up there and would ride my skateboard to get shaved ice. I came to Ariz. and thought, ‘I bet you this state would be a great spot for a SnoShack.’” Simple words, yet a profound decision. “People just love the quality and value of shaved ice,” says Cushing. Building on the stellar reputation of the previous owner, Jenny Sisung has infused her own vision of home chic and suitably re-branded the store as Jen@Home. “While Abloom’s former name seems to represent more of a floral based boutique, we decided it was time to update our brand to reflect more of what Jen@Home has to offer,” says Sisung. Jen@Home believes strongly in extending only high quality items to their valued clients. Some of the lines they are now carrying include Hooker Furniture, Gracious Goods (GG Collection), Fortunata, Italian Pottery and Bella Notte Linens, among many other fine namebrands. In addition to offering unique furniture and accessories, Jen@Home rounds out their decor repertoire with skilled interior design services, lighting, custom draperies, bedding, and custom dried, preserved floral arrangements. Every customer is as unique as their individual living space and is treated like family.

“The current décor trends are leaning more towards clean, simple lines yet remaining elegant,” explains Sisung. “…A lighter, more neutral color palette with pops of accent colors. One of our strengths at Jen@Home is being able to incorporate a new updated look into any home without overwhelming our clients. Many think they have to start from scratch to update their current decor, but the truth is that mixing in some new styles and colors can really freshen the look of a home.” Jen@Home’s exceptional design service sets the standard in the Valley. With over 30 years of colorful, elegant and refined design expertise, they can help transform a house into a home. Whether you want to update just one particular area of a home or are looking to breathe new life into every room, the creative and insightful designers will work within any budget to help you create a place of solitude, a vibrant gathering place or a peaceful retreat. And how can anybody not become enchanted by the awe-inspiring vistas of Yosemite’s imposing rock formations, impressive waterfalls and magnificent giant sequoias. There is a serenity that immediately envelops us when arriving in Yosemite as we leave behind our sometimes stressful urban lifestyles. On previous getaways, we’ve stayed in all of the diverse lodging properties within the park that fit most anyone’s budget and we enjoyed them all. In Yosemite Valley, you can find the famous upscale and historic Ahwahnee, one of the country’s finest park lodges, and Yosemite Lodge at the Falls, which provides comfortable hotel rooms. On the other end of the lodging spectrum, Curry Village and the Housekeeping Camp provide motel type rooms, rustic cabins and canvas tents. At the southern tip of the park, near the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias, you’ll find the historic Wawona Hotel, a sprawling Victorian with the park’s only golf course. For the ultimate splurge getaway, you should make an effort to attend one of The Ahwahnee’s three famous celebratory events during the winter season: Annually since 1927, the legendary Bracebridge Dinner transforms the hotel into a 17th century English country estate for an elegant yuletide ceremony featuring a world class seven course feast of culinary magic, Renaissance entertainment and Christmas traditions of that period; Oenophiles will be enthralled by the annual Vintners’ Holidays where they’ll meet eminent winemakers in person as they showcase their special vintages and provide enlightening seminars. An extraordinary five course gala dinner prepared by the talented Ahwahnee culinary staff, complemented with rare and limited-release wines from the featured wineries, is the highlight of the event; Chefs’ Holidays, held each year in January and February, feature some of the country’s most creative and critically acclaimed chefs d’ cuisine. This is an amazing opportunity to meet these premier culinary giants as they showcase their styles and current trends with special food tastings, demonstrations, and a festive gala dinner. For complete information on these events, lodging reservations, restaurants, and all things about the park go to yosemitepark.com.

Whether you stay inside or outside the park, here’s a list of our four favorite things to do while visiting Yosemite:
1
Hike to as many waterfalls as possible and don’t miss Yosemite Falls, the fifth highest in the world with a total drop of 2,425 feet.
2
Visit the Ansel Adams Gallery to view and purchase photos by one of America’s foremost photogs.
3 4
Drive up to Glacier Point for the spectacular views of the valley below. Even if you’re not staying at the Ahwahnee, have a meal in their majestic dining room.
For those readers who’ve never been to Yosemite or just not recently, we hope we’ve piqued your interest enough to do so soon. It is one of those few places on the planet where we can almost guarantee you’ll not be disappointed.

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2013
Awhile back, we decided to experience staying at different lodging choices just outside the park; it proved to be a great idea and worth strong consideration for any of our reader’s next Yosemite visit. One of the best places to vacation is the four-star Tenaya Lodge in Fish Camp near the South Gate. This classic fullservice mountain lodge was originally opened as a Marriott. In 2001, it was purchased by Delaware North, the same top-rated hospitality organization that manages The Ahwahnee and all of Yosemite’s lodging, dining, and store facilities within the park. We stayed at Tenaya when it first opened, but it’s a far superior property today thanks to Delaware’s stunning renovations and improved services and amenities. Dining in their Sierra Restaurant has also improved dramatically; and their state of the art conference facilities deserve special attention from our San Joaquin Valley meeting planners. One of the most pleasant surprises on this sojourn was our overnight stay at the Cottages at Tenaya Lodge, across the road from the Lodge. For those readers who prefer a smaller property, this is a very smart choice; and the prices can be more moderate than the lodge. The accommodations and public areas are separate buildings, nestled among the gardens and trees, and are tastefully decorated (tenayalodge.com).
Another wonderful lodging choice outside the park is the Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal, right on the banks of the rugged Merced River. This is the closest lodging outside the park to the Arch Rock entrance to Yosemite Valley. It has a lot to offer Yosemite visitors. Room prices, when compared to similar rooms within the park, are usually more moderate and most rooms come with incredible views of the river. Their rooms and suites are well-furnished and often include kitchenettes and fireplaces. When staying at the lodge, it’s a great place to spend an extra day or so to take advantage of their wonderful pools, spas, and close by hiking trails, while most of the guests are in the park itself (stayyosemiteviewlodge.com). A great activity while in El Portal is to sign on with Zephyr Whitewater Expeditions, a highly regarded tour operator, for an exhilarating all day raft trip down the Merced. It’s sometimes wild, but always a scenic and cool adventure led by knowledgeable and entertaining guides. For the most excitement, book a trip in late spring or early summer when the rapids are more fierce and challenging from the snow melt (zrafting.com). FOR MORE INFORMATION:

WHAT’S COOKING? TRUDY MAPLES: A CULINARY EXTRAORDINAIRE BY: MELISSA WENZEL
When Trudy Maples was a little girl, she used to role play her favorite show, Mel’s Diner, pretending to cook up delicious meals and then serving them to satisfied customers. Today, Maples has made that dream a reality with her own cooking school and catering service in the East Valley.

FOOD SPOTLIGHT
“My dad was as great cook. On Sundays he would prepare his special dish which included the fresh bass he caught from various lakes in Arizona,” Maples said. “He taught me a secret way of preparing it that I now share with my students.” Maples began her business enterprise 17 years ago shortly after discovering her love of cooking extended beyond tinkering around the kitchen. “It wasn’t until I was in my 20s, when I started creating and testing recipes, that I realized I had a natural knack for cooking,” Maples said. “I was excited to share my knowledge with others.” Maples offers a variety of classes, from date night
cooking to kitchen organizing to corporate culinary team building events. “Our date night cooking class is a fun and unique thing to do other than dinner and a movie,” Maples said. “The (class) is hands on and working together as a couple is great fun in this culinary atmosphere. We have several menus to choose from and they sell out quickly.” Complementing her passion for cooking is her love for cookbooks, especially older ones. “I love the ones with dog-earned corners, food-spattered pages and flour fingerprints,” Maples said. “They have many memories of cooking between their tattered pages.” While Maples should be considered an expert cook and entrepreneur, she hasn’t always been so successful in the kitchen. Like most of us, Maples has had her share of cooking disasters.
REFRESHING CHERRY LIME MOJITOS 1 pound fresh or frozen pitted cherries 1/2 cup packed fresh mint leaves 1/3 cup fresh lime juice - about 3 limes 1 cup citrus flavored rum - use citrus soda if making non-alcoholic and don’t use simple syrup, just lime juice The soda is sweet enough - I use Sprite 1 cup lime simple syrup Lime wedges and cherries, for garnish Mix together and pour over ice or use blender if desired
LIME SIMPLE SYRUP 2 cups sugar 1 cup water 3 limes, zested
In a small sauce pan, combine sugar, water and lime zest over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and cool. Strain before using.
“I was 22 years old and my husband and I were helping out with a spaghetti dinner fundraiser,” Maples said. “I was making a ton of pasta, but didn’t know I needed to add salt and oil to the boiling water to help the pasta not stick together. Oh my goodness, you can imagine the lumps of pasta stuck together? Fortunately, another volunteer who was a more experienced cook taught me the ways of pasta making. We recovered and it turned out great!” In addition to her cooking classes, Maples is a personal chef and has a monthly cooking segment on Arizona Midday on Channel 12. She is also in the process of writing a cookbook. “When we have friends gather in our kitchen to try out my recipes and they love them, I consider those very memorable moments,” she said.

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2013
For more inFormation:

RaspbeRRy soRbet 2 cups sugar 2 cups water 2 quarts raspberries, hulled and sliced 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 1/2 cup white corn syrup DiRections
Bring the sugar and 2 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer, without stirring, until the sugar dissolves, about 3 minutes. Set aside to cool completely. Place the raspberries and lime juice in a food processor and puree. Press the raspberry puree through a strainer to remove the seeds. When the sugar syrup has cooled completely, combine with the raspberry puree. Add the corn syrup and stir well. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. Sorbet is particularly soft after churning but firms up after freezing. Recipe courtesy Paula Deen, 2008
RaspbeRRy panna cotta 1 cup whole milk 1 tablespoon unflavored powdered gelatin 3 cups whipping cream 1/3 cup honey 1 tablespoon sugar Pinch salt 2 cups assorted fresh berries DiRections:
Place the milk in a small bowl. Sprinkle the gelatin over. Let stand for 3 to 5 minutes to soften the gelatin. Pour milk mixture into a heavy saucepan and stir over medium heat just until the gelatin dissolves but the milk does not boil, about 5 minutes. Add the cream, honey, sugar, and salt. Stir until the sugar dissolves, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from the heat. Pour into 6 wine glasses so that they are 1/2 full. Cool slightly. Refrigerate until set, at least 6 hours. Spoon the berries atop the panna cotta and serve.

A truly one-of-a-kind attraction has become one of Queen Creek’s best treasures and now residents of Scottsdale and Phoenix are also getting a taste of the Valley’s best olive oil. “It was the idea of the owners Terry and Brenda Rea to create an agritourism experience based around olive trees and olive oil,” says manager Robert Holmes. Two olive tree groves currently have 2,500 trees, and they are about to plant another 5,000 trees and purchase a new processing machine this year. The first trees were planted in 1998 and in November 2005 the Queen Creek Olive Mill opened to the public. Proud of their familyowned local business roots, they also purchase olives from other Arizona growers.
With new retail locations at Biltmore Fashion Park and Kierland Commons, residents around the Valley are about to experience the Queen Creek treasure. “You can taste all of our products in our store,” says Holmes. “The Queen Creek location looks like a big, beige steel building from the outside, but on the inside we provide a farmer’s market environment.” With Terry Shea as Arizona’s only Certified Master Sommelier from the International Olive Oil Council in Italy, customers know they are in a world-class produce environment and there are a variety of products to enhance the experience. “We have compressed olive oils that have Meyer lemon, blood orange and Mexican limes that we use to make cupcakes,” says Holmes. “We
also have vanilla bean olive oil for vanilla bean waffles and cupcakes. Our passion is creating a great experience for our guests and having the best olive oil products available at our gourmet marketplace.” First-time visitors will definitely want to participate in the educational Olive Oil 101 tour. It teaches the history of the farm and mill, how signature oils are made and the importance of local products and sustainable farming. Groups of up to 60 people can be accommodated for the hourly tours and they also host corporate and private events. “As soon as you arrive to our groves nested at the base of the San Tan Mountains, you know it will be an experience to remember,” says Holmes. “We are going to continue to grow to develop products and resources for our customers and guests.” FOR MORE INFORMATION:

FOR THE LOVE OF BEER BJ’S RESTAURANT & BREWHOUSE
3155 W Chandler Blvd Chandler (480) 917-0631 Whether you’re a beer drinker or not, ‘tis the season for cold, frothy brews. From light to dark, Belgian ales to American Lagers, beer sales tend to increase during the lazy dog days of summer. With an ever growing population of new craft and hybrid beers, choosing a beer might seem a little more complicated these days. There is no better way to get an idea of the beer served then taking a tour of taste, if you will. BJ’s is unique in the fact that they have three samplers to offer, a dark, a light and a specialty; the reasoning for this is that their samples come in 5oz glasses, much larger than the usual brewery. And loving beer as much as we do, we had to try all of them! We did have some food to go with all that beer, and in true beer mode, we stuck with the appetizer menu. If you can hit happy hour, this drops the menu app prices to half off, a great deal if you can find a seat in the bar!

FINAL THOUGHTS
WHEN AMERICA SPARKLES BY: KELLY POLLARD
Independence Day is synonymous with summertime gatherings for me. Ever since I can remember, the holiday involved the scent of barbecue smoke and the sounds of adults chattering away and children giggling and playing. We gathered along the street for a parade in early light to secure ideal real estate, then regrouped later in backyards cluttered with overflowing coolers and tables spread with potato salads, watermelon slices, and burgers. Although we’ve spent some of these holidays at local festivals, camping or doing the all-American day at a baseball game, it seems we often remain in the neighborhood.
I’ve carried these traditions into adulthood. My family has always been the stay-at-home type, rather than braving the crowds for a choice spot to view professional firework shows. Or even worse, hitting the road for an extended weekend getaway with the thousands of other cars crowding the highway. Independence Day is one of those low-key holidays with low pressure and minimal preparation required to celebrate. I love these holidays. If only Christmas could learn a thing or two from the traditions set forth on the Fourth of July. The only planning required is what kind of meat to throw on the grill and what kind of beverage to consume at a local pool, block party or backyard. July 4th is the excuse to throw a big bash, even if this party happens to fall on a Thursday. Who are we to ignore celebrating our nation’s independence? Because I admit to being a homebody, I also own up to the home-based fireworks. There was the one year when a guest unleashed a barrage of illegal fireworks at a block party. We oohed and exclaimed at each satisfying pop and 74

successful launch, until the menacing boom of an M80 induced terror in my then-toddler boys. And really, I suppose, it isn’t so attractive watching 40-year-old men light off fireworks with one eye watching out for cops driving the neighborhood. Then there is the seemingly harmless sparkler phenomena. These gems were my favorite growing up on my wide, suburban street. I remember making the sparkles dance, fluttering around and pretending like I was the prettiest fairy in the land. I wanted to share that love with my own sons, who decidedly would not dance around like princesses but instead swing them at each other like swords. There they were, my two preschoolers at the time, jabbing their faux-light sabers in the air. I’m not sure why I was surprised when he earned himself a blister the size of a half dollar after the sparkler sword play. We felt the repercussions of this trauma for the next two years, enduring his manic aversion to anything that cracked, popped or sparkled.
I admit I often neglect the meaning of the holiday and why we’re stuffing hot dogs in our mouths with a chaser of beer from a frosted cup. Nothing feels freer to me than having drinks with friends while kids throw poppers on the ground or swim themselves into exhaustion. Of course I know that the holiday is about so much more. It’s about what we often take for granted in the daily roller coaster of our lives. We’ve never known oppression because we’ve always been free. And when our country has been under a threat of some sort, dedicated military work to protect us and protect this freedom our founding fathers won for us back in 1776. So when fireworks shoot high overhead to the tune of Star Spangled Banner or Proud to be an American, I will hold my family tight and embrace our independence with gratitude. I will even embrace the firework traumas and overcooked hamburgers.

You have one life to live, live it well. Jamie’s Story Jaime, age 42, came to Protea Medical Center after suffering for seven years from depression, insomnia, and anxiety. Her symptoms began after giving birth to two children over three years. Since her last pregnancy, Jaime’s menstrual cycles had been irregular. She gained 25 pounds over seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire as well as confidence, and felt that she was in a downward spiral.
Within moments of her consult, the doctor developed a preliminary assessment of Jamie’s condition. As he explained, Jamie’s name could easily be replaced with the names of thousands of other women seen
Jaime’s previous physicians made her feel that she was a high maintenance, emotionally inadequate hypochondriac.
Even when she did get a full night’s sleep, Jaime never felt rested or renewed. Jaime had sought the care of two physicians, who both told her she was “depressed with anxiety” and prescribed antidepressants and anxiety medications with sleep aids. At no point did either doctor run labs to check her hormone levels.
“I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!” A friend of hers, a patient at Protea Medical Center, introduced her to the concept of a natural alternative treatment for her healthcare issues, which could include dietary counseling, bloodwork, hormone evaluation, and nutritional supplements. Encouraged, Jaime came to us for an evaluation.
in our clinic: women between the ages of 30 and 50 from all walks of life and careers, anxious to restore their well-being. Jaime’s previous physicians made her feel that she was a high maintenance, emotionally inadequate hypochondriac. At Protea, we explained how her symptoms were common to women her age and that she was not alone. Best of all, these symptoms were easily treated. Jaime was experiencing an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body’s ability to function, leading to insomnia, depression, anxiety and fatigue. Jamie’s hormonal irregularity created a perfect storm of imbalance within her body. After her initial bloodwork returned to the clinic, the doctor set up a customized treatment plan based on her results. He prescribed bioidentical hormones and natural thyroid supplementation, as well as weekly vitamin injections to combat her fatigue.
If Jaime’s story resonates with you, give the experts at Protea Medical Center a call today to schedule a consult. You have one life to live, Live it well. 76

Our nutritionist counseled her to try foods rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins to help restore her vitality. She was put on a personalized diet plan specific to her needs. Within two months, Jaime’s depression and fatigue disappeared. She discontinued her antidepressants, lost ten pounds, and felt energized. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!”
